Report: Sheffield Had Interest In Phillies

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, April 06, 2009 05:04 PM

The Associated Press confirms Gary Sheffield had mutual interest in the Phillies, especially with friend Jimmy Rollins persuading him. But it was, according to the article, David Wright who got the better of the exchange, bringing Sheffield to the Mets.

The Mets won their opener today, 2-1, behind Daniel Murphy and a sterling bullpen effort.

  1. Robbi P Says:

I wish I can take credit for this but like my buddy Dan said to me yesterday we are going to have the mets right where we want them, in front of us to start the season haha.

Did anyone see Moyer’s ERA against the Braves last year. Hopefully he forgets how to pitch against them like last year when his ERA was in the 5-6 range

  2. TODDFROMFAIRMOUNT Says:

Well, they already have their lead to blow again this year.

  3. Richie Says:

I wonder what Wright said that Jimmy didn’t? Probably something like “Hey Sheff, you’ll have a much easier time getting playing time in our corner outfield positions, both of our starters are average at best and they just won the World Series, plus you batted .178 last year and are a major headcase year in and year out, you would fit perfectly as a New York Mutt.” Followed by Sheff saying, Where do I sign?

  4. estrada Says:

I believe sheff signed with the mets because, as per the article you sited,

“I know I have a chance to win a championship here,” Sheffield said.

    enough said.

  5. Keith Says:

Wouldn’t he have a chance to win a championship with the team who just won a championship?

  6. estrada Says:

apparently he knows the mets are better.

  7. phillyhater Says:

you philly fans sure are very arrogant after a world series win…good job the other night against the braves…way to start the season off right…haha…if any of you philly fans think the mets are going to do what they did last year…you people are crazy

  8. mike Says:

As a long time phillies fans, I truly believe the mets will be vastly improved with there bullpen, and the addition of sheffield. We have been beating them, but they now have solved one of there biggest weakness. there starters are as good as ours. they lack the lineup we have. I still don’t like the ibanez signing. I would rather have tried for manny. He would have been a difference maker to me. But they seem to know what they are doing so maybe it will work out. The problem with manny is a extra 12 million don’t know how they could have made that up it would have them at 145

  9. Matt Says:

phillyhater, you mean what they’ve done the last two years??? hahaha, enjoy sheffield. hopefully he’s cpr certified, because a lot of choking goes on in that club house.

  10. mike Says:

how can phillyhater come on this blog. after the choking mets have shown nothing to prove they can win it, only logical thing is that these guy is a young kid or a nut?

  11. mike Says:

The phillyhater must know that the mets broke our record in blowing a lead late in the season. Phillyhater keep it coming you have to be a wacho

  12. chitown phillyfan Says:

Phillyhater you are hilarious….seriously you are going to talk trash after 1 game to defending world champions (god I love typing that). Its a marathon not a sprint. I will say the Mets are improved and it will be tight race again this year, but it is still waaaay too early for trash talk as far as I am concerned.

  13. Ed Says:

Philly fans are a little arrogant, their team won the world series…Met’s fans are arrogant because…well I really don’t know why. I guess because they haven’t realized their team was embarrassed the last two years. The best thing about haters is that they only hate when they are jealous. Period.

  14. Keith Says:

    go Phils!

  15. estrada Says:

Ed…says a lot about philly fans doesn’t it?

  16. phillyhater Says:

what you people are nuts…you are all the ones talking about what sheffield and wright were saying for him to come to the mets…and i simply said good job the other night against the braves…i wasnt trying to trash talk…and you guys won the world series…i dont see how you can still talk about winning last year when this year has started…we beat you guys head to head last year…sure you won the world series…god job…we might as well have just given you the division since we lost it ourselves…even after winning the world series no one other than the fans of philly think you have a chance to win..

  17. phillyhater Says:

writing jose reyes underneath a shane victorino picture?…rollins bringing up the mets at the parade?…who is jealous of who?

  18. phillyhater Says:

you guys are worse than yankee fans…at least they have 26 world championship rings to show for..both of our teams have two

  19. Havoc Says:

Dude three posts in four minutes? Take a deep breath, a shot of ritalin, and make one post. You look like you’re fighting with yourself…moron.

  20. phillyhater Says:

moron?…man you dont even know me

  21. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

PhillyHater,2008 the Amazins “owned” the Phils…in the regular season now thats great and wonderful.Bottom line,Phils…looking won it all last season end of story. Now Ed,you come in here complaining about the fans being arrogant,Phillies fans have earned that wright to beat their chests for they won when it mattered.

  22. The Dipsy Says:

    Dear phillyhater:

I am heartened to see that you stopped coating your nut sack with Jiffy extra chunky peanut butter while gazing longingly at nude Erik Estrada pictures long enough to chime in to our fair site. I always get a chuckle when I read your posts because I can only think of all the things you must do in life and all the people you must see…..all from the comforts of your parents basement. And btw, no matter what anybody says, 42 is NOT too old to get your GED so crack those books! As for who thinks the Phils might win this year, I’m sure everyone in Queens likes the Mets. Rest assured that the civilized world would probably all bet on the Phils. Thanks for your contribution and keep those cards and letters coming.

    Lovingly,

    The Dipsy

  23. Havoc Says:

True, but I have some evidence I’ve based it on. First, you’ve brought up a meaningless stat that the Mets had 11 wins against the Phils last year, which counts for absolutley nothing. Second, you use “…” in place of punctuation wherever you can, it’s like your an addict man i’m worried about you. Finally, you said that we’re worse than yankees fans. I hate the Mets, but there is no one that is worse than the Yankees and their fans, period.

  24. Mets Fan In Filly Says:

As a Mets fan, I can only say to all the Philly fans here, please disregard what Phillyhater says. He is a moron, obviously and does not speak for all Mets fans.

If he had any sense and WASNT a bandwagon Mets fan, he would know that the Phillies have lost their last two opening day games—-and look at the result: a world series ring and two division titles. The Mets just have bad memories. So we can relish in our “best opening day record” bs stat all we want. Fact is, Phillies have spanked the Mets the past two seasons. No two ways about it. That being said, I do hate the Phillies for that.

  25. Marps Says:

    Havoc,

False, Sox fans are worse. They come out of the woodwork, and say words like “wicked”.

  26. Havoc Says:

Hmm good point. You know what it is though, you see Yankees fans everywhere.

  27. phillyhater Says:

    I apologize.

  28. Jeff Says:

Sheffield, Mets…. all I have to say is who cares. Lets focus on the Phillies and what they need to do.

The Phillies need to score runs regardless of who is pitching, even though Myers gave up 4, our bats did not wake up till it was too late. If they would have come back in the ninth we would not be complaingin so much. If Myers only gave up a 2 run homer we still would have lost:(

Lets stop worry about how good or not good the mets are. Thats what they want us to do. They have won nothing since 86, I was in the 6th grade! They need to earn the concern, not just go out and buy it… Look at the Yankees….Kaboom!

  29. Keith Says:

    exactly, just ignore the trolls

  30. frand Says:

did you guys know your in last place?

  31. SJ Mike Says:

Didn’t know that the standings really meant that much to you 1 game into the season. Premature, don’t you think?

  32. frand Says:

i think you guys are lookin solid this year and now that the mets have a compitent bullpen it should be a piece of cake

  33. SJ Mike Says:

Just like how 7 up with 17 to go was a piece case, or 3.5 up with 17 to go would be a piece of cake. And how the champagne would taste that much sweeter?

It’s one game in. There’s a lot of season left.

  34. frand Says:

sj mike are u stupid? did you see what i said about now having 2 top closers in the game? dummy

  35. frand Says:

face it, the phillies played like poopy last night and the mets looked real sexy today. ill talk to ya later buddddy mike i gotta go now do my italian homework. you see, were doing something for earth day, and my job is to find the top 10 most endangered monkeys in the world and then write them in italian. ok bye mike have a good season phucker

  36. mikey Says:

    ha

  37. SJ Mike Says:

So I guess we don’t need to play the other 161 games. I mean, just hand the division over, right? Because 1 game means the world. I mean, we all know that there are absolutely no questions in regards to Mike Pelfrey, Oliver Perez, John Maine, or whoever the 5th starter would be, right?

Man you Mets fans make me laugh when you get overconfident so quickly. Served you guys very well the past two seasons, why not three times?

  38. Ed Says:

Excuse me? How was I complaining about the fans being arrogant? As someone who has attended the home opener 9 years in a row and goes to atleast a dozen games a year while living 2.5 hours away I was simply pointing out that Phillies fans have a reason, and a right to be arrogant, at least for this year. The whole point of my post was to say that we have a reason to be arrogant when the Mets fans do not. Not sure how that fact escaped you but next time try reading a little more carefully before you try and call me out.

  39. frand Says:

I can’t finish my italian homework, can someone help me?

  40. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

First game of the season,we haven’t seen anything yet.Yet its so fun to see everyone beat their chest and show their machismo and bravado and yet nobody has one anything yet in this young season.

  41. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

First game of the season,we haven’t seen anything yet.Yet its so fun to see everyone beat their chest and show their machismo and bravado and yet nobody has one anything yet in this young season.
P.S. – Sorry, forgot to tell you great post!

  42. Jeff Says:

Mike, rest of those taking the bait hook line and sinker, read my above post!

  43. Chuck P Says:

Grrrumpy Miner… well said. We can play well with guys like you… we know you’re a Mets fan and that’s fine but you don’t come on here with your chest puffed out like most of these North Jersey guidos… the ones who call themselves Mets fans until the Yankees are in the World Series. I don’t think anyone is walking away with the division and I don’t see how anyone could think that’s going to happen after one game. Our ace hasn’t started yet. Your pen looked good… against the Reds. I still think that those two additions are overrated (when you think about what you lost)… if it was my team, I would have rather seen them add three or four solid relievers rather than two studs.

    Frand, I have an Italian phrase for you;

    “E tu sei un fesso.”

Phillyhater… at least we know what we’re getting with you.

  44. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Well, the pen we have now, they say this Sean Green guy looks pretty good,Feliciano and Stokes (From last seasons Poison Pen) is pick your poison,Darren O’Day and Bobby Parnell who is home grown are unknowns to me,along with Putz and K-Rod for the 8th and 9th….I’ll take this pen we have over that DREK of Heilman,Ayala,Smith,Schowenweis etc any day of the week;twice on Sunday.ALSO I am not 100% if true but outside chance Billy Wagner comes back in August.Imagine a 3 Headed monster of Wagner,Putz and K-Rod from the 7th to the 9th?I’m salivating!
