Sad Offensive Performance Means Another 0-2 Start
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, April 07, 2009 09:47 PM
Blame it on the cold, blame it on opposing pitching, blame it on the bats. Whatever the case, the Phillies offense has stunk so far.
The Braves shut out the Phils, 4-0; so far Atlanta has outscored the Phillies 8-1 to open the season. Instead of Derek Lowe mastering the Phils, it was Jair Jurrjens who wiggled out of some small jams, getting many shallow pops and warning-track pseudo-blasts. Ryan Howard and Chase Utley each collected two hits — otherwise it was a paltry showing.
Jamie Moyer surrendered a leadoff home run to Kelly Johnson. That was all Atlanta needed. Moyer gave up four runs in five innings. The bullpen did another stellar job in response, as Chan Ho Park tossed an easy sixth, Jack Taschner threw two scoreless innings and Clay Condrey put up zeroes in the ninth.

Never thought I’d see the day where the only thing that wasn’t bothering me on the Phillies team IS THE BULLPEN!!!!!!!!!!!
April 7th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Bad start to your season.Line-up and the starters need to wake up.Can’t blame the defense either because some balls hit found holes and were out of reach.Sure Ibanez made a good play throwing out Kotchman at home and Rollins in a fine play top 9th,but overall….bad start to your season.
April 7th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
I agree with Greg V 100%. very disappointing start. Starting pitching stunk and the hitting was at best second rate. Thank heavens we have 160 more games. This cannot continue.
April 7th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
It shouldn’t Brrr,Even I know the Phillies are a much more talented team than this.
April 7th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
When’s the last time the Phils won an opening series? Blanton better toss a shutout and hit a HR tomorrow.
I sure dislike it when the boys don’t hit. An L is an L, but those high scoring losses are a little more exciting.
Maybe the Phils do like it when the fans are at their throats. You’d think they would be more inspired to start better reading the comments on this blog.
April 7th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
The Phillies hitters look lost in translation at the plate and the starters still think its spring and the braves are taking advantage of the starters mistakes. He have agree with Burr that the only worry we dont have is the bull pen is beyond belief it has to get better.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Yeah, I’m with Greg. For years, my dad and I used to joke about how a Phillies game was a great lead handily squandered by the bullpen.
I am, however, glad that the bullpen is better than a lot of people expected.
I like that they’ll use the Seoul Man out of the pen. Perfect use of a fifth starter with no games coming.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
listen, the phils are gonna suck this season…we all know that. Let’s just give up watching the season, I think the marlins need some fans. Afterall, jimmy rollins was right all philly fans are bandwagoners. Lets join the marlins bandwagon, who’s with me?
April 7th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
I am the president.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
I am worried that Utley looks bad at the plate and has no “pop” when he makes contact. He also had that first inning error tonight. I’m worried about him.
Feliz and Victorino do not look comfortable and havent had a ton of spring at bats.
Howard keeps hitting into the shift.
The good news is that with the exception of the long ball the pitching has been solid. A win tomorrow and Phillies Nation can exhale.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Don’t read my last post, I didn’t post it! I’m a die hard Phillies fan and will root for them forever, forever, forever!!!
April 7th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
haha, how’s that feel Chase Mutley?
April 7th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Hey, who’s impersonating me? we all know i’m not a die hard phillies fan!! I’m a marlins fan, they’re 2-0!!!
April 7th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
you bastard! you bastard!
April 7th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

April 7th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

breaking news: Chase Mutley is a loser
April 7th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
I’m not a loser, but you are one.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
Breaking news: we already knew Chase Mutley was a loser….he’s also a fag and bandwagoner.

now what do you think of Uggla? I liked him last year.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

April 7th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Uggla is def. something special. He’s a potential MVP someday…I might have to change my username to Dan Muggla
April 7th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Chase Mutley! We shouldn’t be on a Phillies site. We aren’t Phillies fan. Where’s the best Marlins site? I will follow you.
I don’t know a Jacob
April 7th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
I don’t like baseball so I have come to complain about it. Why is it so boring?
April 7th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
WHOA! I am definitely a fan. I LOVE THE PHILLIES!!!!!!!
I also want to say the Phillies are still the best because they are the world phucking champs and I will smash you with a hammer if you think otherwise. You got that? You got that? Go Phillies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We will win tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 7th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
It’s simple..
Mets ARE the favorite to win the NL.. they finished a few games behind the phils and with this bullpen last year they would have finished ahead of the Phils… that said… i am a long time phillies fan and what i think they do best is play from behind…and play SCRAPPY….none of this HIGH HORSE were the champs shit…. scrappy fucking baseball..play the game like you want it….not like you own it… leave that game to the Yankees.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
Despite the highly intelligent conversation going on by a couple of jackasses impersonating regulars on the site, I’d like to inject a little something about the game:
The guys were hitting the ball hard tonight, just not in the right spots. Moyers gotta be a little better, but overall this is what I expect out of him…3-4 runs over 5-6 innings. If he can do that every fifth day and we can get decent production out of Park, these games can be winnable. Unfortunately, our bread and butter, our bats, have gone a bit cold. We had the runners on base to win this game, unlike Sunday, they just weren’t getting the clutch hits.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
wtf?
April 7th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
By the way, the real Jacob… i’m with you and the smashing of the hammer. Go WFC!!!
April 7th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
h
April 7th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Jason, you have a sexy name.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
you guys censored my last post?? very lame… actually really really lame…
all i said was mets are a better team and would have finished ahead of phils last year had they had this bull pen…and that phils need to play scrappy ball and get off the HIGH HORSE of were the champs ..and start playing the game like they want it… and not like they own it…and leave that shit to the yankees…
what is bad about saying this?…wtf
April 7th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
uh thanks estrada
Chase Mutley please don’t steal my site
April 7th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
Yes, yes I do… and my wife is very fond of it.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
this just seems like a conversation golem from lord of the rings would have. people need to grow up. as for the game…i was there and it was pathetic. moyer looked better than his numbers said
April 7th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Okay I’ve had enough of this site. I AM PHUCKING LEAVING IT, OKAY? PHUCK EVERYONE!
April 7th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
the offense was pathetic. the pen was fabulous especially taschner
April 7th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
I wish I could hit for the Phillies. I would have had at least a double and a triple tonight. I can hit the ball like Babe.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
that’s fascinating Phil, now what do you think of Braves?
April 7th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
looks like we have some clones…and posts being deleted… is this site run by the eagles front office?
April 7th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Phil,
It was pretty pathetic. I agree with you about Moyer, that’s kind of what I’m asking him to do.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
sorry Jason
April 7th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
Chase Mutley get a life
I can’t wait for the Phillies to win so all these fuckers are gone.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Moyer never faces us that well. He should do better next start or well that sucks for you guys.
April 7th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Whoever is posting under my name and attaching my friends site to their name as well… It doesn’t really bother me at all. I am here to talk baseball. Yes, the Phillies are 0-2. Yes, they are the defending champs. That doesn’t matter. What does matter is that there are 160 games left to play, and their best pitcher will be making his first start Fiday. We’ll see what happens. I ask you out of respect(although I don’t think that word means anything to you) that you please take this coversation elsewhere and let us talk baseball. It’s really easy to hide behind the annoyminity of a computer, but I am sure you probably get picked on a lot in the real world and I can bet my house that you have not gotten laid in a very long time. If you’re bored, I suggest finding a girlie magazine in your dads sock drawer and masturbate.
April 7th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
Tim, get these clowns in line! We want Phils talk and topics not 2nd grade school yard BS.
April 7th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
I’m going over to the Star Wars forum where the smart people hang!
April 7th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
These games are just embarrassing.
April 7th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
tried to post intelligent stuff… but deleted..or im possibly victim of internet error..anyhow.. i like this site but now that phils are o-2 and on pace for 70 wins at best…this has become the fox news of mlb blogs….and site masters have cut out things they dont like…
it worries me… im a phils phan,.,, why delete my post if i say mets are better this year and we need to step up?…
April 8th, 2009 at 12:04 am
We really do need to step it up. Can we have actually have a solid 1st inning from our starter tomorrow? Losing 2-0 before we get to bat is never fun.
April 8th, 2009 at 2:54 am
Fox News? sometimes things get caught up in the spam filter. its ashame we have to have it. But, you can thank guys like “Chase Mutley”/estrada, who will be properly banned in the morning.
if your comment goes to moderation, it usually will clear within 24 hrs.
April 8th, 2009 at 3:09 am
4 guys in the starting line-up didn’t get a whole lot of at bats this spring, Howard is not an April hitter, and they get little offense out of the catcher anyway. Not sure why a whole lot more would be expected out of Meyers and Moyer – 3-4 runs in 5-6 innings will probably be their typical game. I was happy to see they survived rough starts. While I don’t like starting 0-2, I don’t see a reason for panic yet, either. We’ll probably go 10-14 in April. The hope is that the Braves, Mets, and Marlins beat each other up, don’t get much over 500, then the bats will heat up with the weather. It would be nice to start the bottom of the 1st not in a hole, though.
April 8th, 2009 at 8:20 am
This team will be fine. Once they get their rings this afternoon, the distractions are over and they can focus on this season.
It’s 2 friggin games, everyone please relax. The bullpen has been outstanding so far, the starters have kept us in the 2 games. We all know the offense can not be this bad. It’s April….
April 8th, 2009 at 9:08 am
They need a win behind Big Joe today. Most of the other teams in baseball have their bats warmed up – the Orioles scored 10 runs on opening day. So I dont want to hear about how it takes the Phillies a few weeks to warm up..I know it does, and im sure theyll be hitting fine in a few weeks…but you have to at least go out there and look like a professional baseball team – which they really didnt look like last night at the plate.
April 8th, 2009 at 9:13 am
Well it’s safe to say it wasn’t the batting order that wasn’t scoring runs because they scored less with the lineup last night. Maybe today we should discuss Charlie batting Victorino leadoff, Utley 2nd, Rollins 3rd, Howard 4th, Ibanez, Werth, Feliz, Coste, Blanton. I just don’t see chooch playing a somewhat day game after 2 night games, even if it is the first 3 games of the year.
April 8th, 2009 at 9:26 am
I’m definitely not in panic mode but I do want to say that, looking at the schedule, we have some pretty “easy” games in April against the Rockies, Nats, Padres…. Schedule-wise, it is one of the “easiest” months of the year! Anything below .500 by the end of the month (even if it’s April) is unacceptable.
April 8th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Not sure if others have said this.. but did everyone think that Werth’s deep ball to LF in the 3rd inning was like 30-rows over the fence, or was that just me??
I thought he crushed that ball..
Howard played a VERY, VERY good game defensively last night.. so that was nice to see.
Im not worried about the offense, they’ll get it going… we’ve started 0-2 like the past four seasons, so its frsutrating, but nothing to get worked-up about..
April 8th, 2009 at 9:50 am
Yeah but you cant get shut out. Score A run at least. If you get shut out by anyone who isnt clearly in the zone that night, that means you just didnt show up at all at the plate.
Being rusty doesnt mean getting shut out. Thats just weak. ONE run in two games….they need to get the win today – even if its ugly – then get out of town and on the road where they can all refocus on baseball and start playing well.
April 8th, 2009 at 9:56 am
While I’m not ready to be jumping off of the highest point just yet, it would be so nice to have a good April. We did prove in the past 2 years that we can overcome a start like this. Imagine what would happen if Howard has a huge april and carries it through the year.
April 8th, 2009 at 9:58 am
The Phillies signed Gustavo Chacin. Left-hander with some Starting Pitching experience, couldnt make the Nats rotation so they released him…
April 8th, 2009 at 9:59 am
Yea this away trip should do them some good… hopefully its not freezing in Colorado though?? two of the games are afternoon games, so maybe get some hot bats going, get the ball jumping a little
April 8th, 2009 at 10:05 am
Manny- that’s a great point… after looking at the schedule, I initially thought that they would win 12-14 games in April. It could be a good thing to load up all of those easy games or it could spell disaster. I mean, we always start slow and if we start slow and lose to bad teams that means that it will be tougher when we pick it up (because we’ll be playing tough teams). On the other hand, it could help us weather this storm if we can pick up a few sloppy wins against bad teams. Ugly wins are still wins… ugly wins don’t typically happen against good teams.
April 8th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Did they really sign Chacin?
April 8th, 2009 at 10:08 am
Give at least a little credit to very good pitching by the Braves. As Don M mentioned, the Phillies continued their yearly habit of starting slow for whatever reason(s). It is a downer to see the team having to play catchup so early to not only the Mets but now the Braves and the Marlins. It’s only two games and plenty of time to reverse their yearly trend for April. I do think it’s important to do so since those teams mentioned are much improved and parity in competition will be evident for entire season.
April 8th, 2009 at 10:10 am
Tim, Brian and Rob. Please, please, please lets have registered users name. Pretty please? I apparently argued with “myself” for like a hour last night. A full hour!! ; )
April 8th, 2009 at 10:16 am
http://washingtontimes.com/news/2009/apr/08/chacin-signs-with-phillies-after-release/
Where does this guy go??? Not AAA…
April 8th, 2009 at 10:20 am
Extended ST in florida, maybe then to AAA when he regains his velocity?
April 8th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Depends who falters in AAA, if Chacin didn’t make the Nationals and didn’t go to AAA for them either then I don’t even know why he’d be in Lehigh’s starting rotation, unles Rodrigo Lopez or someone breaks down.
April 8th, 2009 at 10:29 am
I didn’t realize he’s only 28 years old… he hasn’t made any money yet so he has reason to keep working but we have a bunch of guys in AAA.
April 8th, 2009 at 10:31 am
I agree with Chase Mutley. That should surely keep away the trolls, well a better chance than now. Is it possible to have registered usernames on this site?
April 8th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Chase Mutley, I agree that’s an obvious solution to eliminate nonsensical shenanigans that went on in one of those threads last night. Does anyone else like that idea?
April 8th, 2009 at 10:37 am
Whatever……. I guess that it would be nice if I was the only one able to sign in as Chuck P (matching email address required to use that name). I’m not that upset about it.
April 8th, 2009 at 10:39 am
I’d agree with that, because I know there’s at least one or two other people using Justin as a call name.
April 8th, 2009 at 10:50 am
I didnt see the game, but in watching the highlights…
I’m happy that Moyer pitched a somewhat typical game for him.Thats his average game. After getting shellacked last time out,he came back to normal. Its encouraging because he is the one I worry about most because of his age.
The hitting will show up…
And these 2 losses are no different for us than every year.
Dont worry Boys, this is just business as usual.
April 8th, 2009 at 11:03 am
I know they’ve been frustrating to watch so far, but just keep reminding yourself that these guys brought a championship to Philly after a LONG, LONG drought. They played their hearts out last season, and made all of us extremely happy for many months. They won’t continue this hitting slump forever, bullpen looks fine, and starters have settled down after bad early innings. They get their WS rings today, something they and we should be very proud of, and will always remember. This is basically the same group as last year, they’ll be fine, it’s all good. I LOVE my WFC Phillies!
