This will have bastardo pitching on his regular rest, I think he was the best option out of the lehigh valley rotation, this is a good move and he will have no excuses if he has a bad outing because the padres lineup is one of the worst in baseball, and will benefit from the large petco park out in San Diego. Hopefully he can atleast give the phils a quality start
May 30th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
forgot to mention he will be facing peavy as well
May 30th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
not a fan of this move and i will not be popular here for this but kyle kendrick should have gotten the start he has earned a second chance to prove himself for atleast 1-2 starts before anyone else gets the call up besides it also would help protect our trade chips for any future moves if bastardo gets rocked in san diego his value will drop
May 30th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
i like the pick. Peavy?! yikes
May 30th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
yes!
May 30th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
i understand the part about the bastardo’s stock drop, but how has kendrick earned another shot, after getting rocked last year he got killed in spring training and has had a decent at best season at triple A so far, Im not confident he would be able to get out major league hitters right now
May 30th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
its time for someone else to get a shot
May 30th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
it was plain to see that kendrick head was not right much the same as it was with myers who is to say another shot at the ml level will not work out for him the way it did for bret ? what harm could it do to find out the guy is only 24 and please if moyer can be given repeated 2nd 3rd 4th…. chances why not 1 more for kyle?
May 30th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
If you wanted to protect Bastardo from his stock dropping, their are other options who have earned more of a shot then Kendrick. Carpenter has had a better year than Kendrick just to name one pitcher.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
One reason they keep giving Moyer multiple shots is he led the team in wins last yer.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
carpenter was lucky it started to rain !!!! please
May 30th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Carpenter has better numbers than KK in AAA.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Exactly how is Bastardo’s stock dropping? He moved from AA to AAA and kicked butt.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
He’s saying it would drop if he got hit around by the Padres.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
last year was last year thats the problem yes what he did was amazing but does anyone really believe it is going to happen again we won the world series last year but this is a new season keeping kendrick down now without at least giving him a shot to prove himself could just set him back mentally if he fails then he and the organization will not have any questions about what could have been
May 30th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
i am not saying the rest of the season just a couple of starts here then if it does not work go with bastardo or carpenter
May 30th, 2009 at 11:31 pm
myers and moyer got another chance because moyer is a veteran and has proven himself, myers has way better stuff than kendrick, kendrick has one pitch that fastball and a slider that screams hit me, bastardo is a much better option, once hitters figured out how to hit kendrick he never came back, why should kendrick get the same treatment as the likes of myers and moyer, the team just lost their #2 pitcher they need to find the best pitcher at lehigh and not worry about giving kendrick another chance
May 30th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
I would agree with you William if KK had actually earned the right to get called up. But, hes not pitching all that great in AAA, there are a few pitchers that have outperformed him so far. Nothing about his numbers in AAA say he should be pitching in MLB. Hes got 32K/22BB and their hitting .275 off him. He hasn’t earned a shot, its that simple.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
hey you don’t know what you got till it’s gone is all i’m saying
May 30th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
dubee really wanted kendrick in the rotation in spring training but he looked that bad that they gave it to someone else and could not develop any secondary pitches and thats why i dont think he will get back to the majors, unless he can develop a changeup
May 30th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
Where is Kendrick going? Hes still in the Phillies organization, if he deserves a shot, he’ll get one.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
none of the starters we have now are anything to write home about so far i’m sur cole and joe will turn around and happ will settle in and find a home here but till then why not try what we have with ml experience till we can trade for a real #2
May 30th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
because that experience is why he shouldnt be called up, he has very marginal stuff and hitters have figured him out, plain and simple,
May 30th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
basically kendricks numbers this year dont give the phillies any reason to call him up
May 30th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
moyers stuff isn’t marginal is numbers are not reason enough to bench him come on !! i’d take kendrick over moyer any day
May 30th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
I think the Phillies are having Kendrick and Carpenter lining up and on standby call just in case Bastardo falls flat on his face.
As Tim indicated, Bastardo is on temporary assignment.
May 30th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
moyer should probably be gone, but he knows how to pitch and has experience but what reason do the phillies have for calling up kendrick, bastardo’s dominance has been hard to ignore this year just look at his numbers this year, so they called him up, kendrick had so many chances to prove himself but he failed every time
May 30th, 2009 at 11:59 pm
Im not saying bastardo is going to come in and dominate but hes been dominating minor league hitters this year so he deserves a chance, 51 ks in 47 innings and hitters have a .194 avg. against him this year
May 31st, 2009 at 12:02 am
Kendrick is a waste. He cannot get big leauge hitters out anymore. Carpenter has not shown anything. Just keeps putting batters on base. This is a great move. Jr knows what he is doing. I heard him on the pregame show. The idiot fans are calling up asking for him to get Sheets. His answer NO. To many injuries. Thats why he is running the team and we just talk about it. Go Antonio and rock it baby. Phillies all the way…
May 31st, 2009 at 12:04 am
Bastard! o
May 31st, 2009 at 12:06 am
never said bastardo was not a good choice just said to explore an option before you start using possible trading chips thats all
May 31st, 2009 at 12:08 am
yes he is a possible trade chip, but he could also greatly improve his stock by having a string of good starts in the MLB
May 31st, 2009 at 12:08 am
and i still say kendrick deserves a shot before bastardo does
May 31st, 2009 at 12:08 am
but we still need to make that big trade, like a # 1-2 pitcher.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:19 am
its not about who deserves a shot its about who earned the shot to pitch, i just want to know how much harder kendrick can get hit before you change your mind
May 31st, 2009 at 12:20 am
No-hitter. Throw it.
May 31st, 2009 at 12:35 am
like i said 1 to 2 starts to see what he has or doesn’t have he can’t get hit any harder than the rest of the starting rotation i said a chance no more no less
May 31st, 2009 at 12:42 am
i think everyone knows what kendrick brings to the table, no more chances, the rest of the phils rotation is another story
May 31st, 2009 at 1:03 am
I’m a bit iffy about having 4 our of 5 pitchers in our rotation being lefties, but Bastardo is the best arm we have in the farm system. I saw him throw in Reading earlier this season and he was lights out. Very much look forward to watching him throw in the bigs!
May 31st, 2009 at 1:31 am
i say give him a shot.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:36 am
Just as I predicted. I look forward to seeing this kid pitch.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:43 am
I may be reading too much into this, but I thought I saw Marson taking BP at the Cit this afternoon (yesterday now, long drive back). Think they bring him up for that game, too, since he has worked with Bastardo and the other potential pitching call-ups?
May 31st, 2009 at 2:22 am
Hey Jeff, Ruby is an idoit, he lucked into the GM gig because he washed Monty’s boat better then Mike Arbuckle, why do you think they have Chuck la Mar and Scott Proefrock as Assisstants , cause they know how to scout talent, all Ruby did with Wade and Pat was work contracts and that is documented, it is ashame the real man who built the team is now in KC, but as far as Sheets being injury prone, so is Cole Hamels, any pitcher is injury prone, cause the human body is not designed for over hand throwing at repeative motions. That is why in Little League level pitchers don’t throw curves and sliders or the change-up because it kills the growing process of the human body..
May 31st, 2009 at 2:28 am
4 lefties…. It’s never worked before, but then no one has ever tried. What the hell let’s do it.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:33 am
Havoc,
I’m okay with 4 lefties as long as there is a righty long reliever around to change the look in a crisis. Besides, I think young lefties might be better trade bait, not that I want to see Bastardo traded.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:06 am
I agree there. We need a trade, but I really like our pitching prospects gonna be hard to let go of any of them. And no team is gonna part with good pitching if we don’t.
May 31st, 2009 at 9:14 am
We definitely need a trade for the rest of the season. Bastardo is as good as anyone else from the farm right now for the near future. I actually like having another lefty to throw at SD because of Gonzales.
I can’t believe that someone would bury Amaro this fast. The guy signed Ibanez and that looks like a pretty good move.
May 31st, 2009 at 9:24 am
I didn’t read this entire thread yet to see if anyone else posted this but 4 lefties? That’s a lot for one rotation.
May 31st, 2009 at 9:24 am
Where did you get that Kendrick or Carpenter derserved the start over Bastardo. Bastardo only knock is that he is small in stature and loses velocity after 5 or 6 innings,But he has outpitched every prospect in this organization this year, Remember drabek is at high A. and had to go 5 starts after starting 3-0 to get his 4th victory, Worley has only pitched 57 innings after skipping a level not as advanced as bastardo. Kendrick continues to struggle at triple a . Carpenter had been up and down for almost two years, after a very good year at triple a.
May 31st, 2009 at 10:32 am
Mike,
Why is Drabek still in A? 4 lefties would be a problem for the long run but I actually think it works with SD and Gonzales. Also, the Dodgers have some tough lh hitters and with Manny out, I think it is fine to go heavy on LH SP’s. Would Bastardo start next Sunday? I guess he would have to have a solid start this Tuesday to earn that start.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:07 pm
I repeat..”As Tim indicated, Bastardo is on temporary assignment.”
Having 4 lefties in rotation is temporary.
Kendrick is on standby and next in line should Bastardo falters.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:01 pm
MDefl actually Pat Gillick signed Raul not Ruby, he is just the figure head, much like a former President of the US, everybody behind the scenes are the ones making the choices.
June 1st, 2009 at 10:48 am
I am not a fan of Bastardo, BUT he deserves the promotion, plain and simple. Carpenter of god awful and Kendrick is just blah.
I think it would be a nice fir for Kendrick in the big park at San Diego, but Bastardo has been too good this year.
