Javier Vazquez (2-3, 4.19 ERA) vs. Joe Blanton (1-2, 6.48 ERA)

After Cole Hamels came back with a vengeance, Joe Blanton takes the hill to prove he ain’t no fluke.

Blanton pitched very well against Saint Louis Monday night, so he’ll hope to carry that today on national television against a team that has already bloodied him in 2009. Back on April 8, Atlanta tagged Blanton for seven runs on nine hits in four innings. That night was highlighted by a monster home run by Brian McCann, who has returned from injury and carries a career 1.000 average against Blanton.

Facing Blanton that day was Javier Vazquez, and he’s back again today for this contest. The Phils got to him a little that day, tagging him for three runs on five hits in six innings. Raul Ibanez homered off him that day, part of a .375, 3 HR clip against Vazquez for his career.

Brad Lidge, who surrendered a home run last night, has already given up three more home runs this season than in all of 2008. To be fair, in just two of his appearances he’s given up runs have the Phils had an advantage of two runs or fewer. One of those two? That April 8 game against Atlanta — he got the save.

Your gameday beer: The Duvel made me do it. At happy hour last night, I spotted the local haunt carried Duvel. The barkeep poured one, then alleged that it exploded. Sure. Whatever the case, I was drinking two Duvels for one, a large price to pay for balance. Today I bring Duvel to you. This crisp, blonde strong ale. Fruity, biting, but overall smooth and refreshing, this Belgian treat is one to hold high. You’d better have a fresh serving of fries and clams with you, my friend.

Go Phillies!

About the only thing that the Belgians do right

  3. PhillyGirlinMichigan Says:

I hate Fox. I never get the Phillies games

  4. Keith Says:

    go Phillies!

  5. The Little Guy Says:

Whose are the commentators?? Their not that bad.

Blanton’s pitching well, keeping the ball low and throwing hard.

  6. Mickey Says:

Excellent choice Tim, but today Im going with “Exit 4″ from Flying Fish brewery. Local to South Jersey, its an American Trippel at about 9%. Crisp and fruity and highly recommended if you can find it.

  7. Keith Says:

    Mark Grace

  8. The Little Guy Says:

    Hes knows his stuff

  9. Keith Says:

    if u say so

  10. Tim Malcolm Says:

Came home and saw Fox would rather show Sox game here in NY. I hate the Sox.

  11. Braves fan Says:

    McCann owns Blanton

  12. The Little Guy Says:

    Can’t stand Youkilis

  13. The Little Guy Says:

Kobe isn’t from Philly? lol Lower Merion

  14. Caleb Says:

    Joe “Flyout” Blanton this inning.

  15. Keith Says:

    UTLEY!!!

    Utley: 10
    Ibanez: 8
    Howard: 6
    Werth: 6

  16. Caleb Says:

    No foot problem here!

  17. Craig Says:

McCann’s career batting average against Blaton?

    1.00

  18. Johnny Snowden Says:

that was just a pretty play by howard.

  19. Keith Says:

the pitcher just got a double though

  20. Keith Says:

    ugh

  21. Johnny Snowden Says:

make that three straight extra base hits

  22. AGH Says:

Charlie should go to a 6-man rotation. Have Hamels and Happ go every fifth day and the rest of that motley crew can split up the rest of the assignments. None of the starters can manage consecutive quality starts. That wouldn’t be so bad, if their nonquality starts weren’t so disastrous.

  23. Keith Says:

    Blanton did pitch well.

  24. ha Says:

    2nd place

  25. PhillyGameday.com Says:

They’re really making Vazquez into a better pitcher than he really is.

  26. Keith Says:

    Blanton in the 8th inning

  27. Tim Malcolm Says:

Just a random thought: Blanton should’ve never been facing McCann again. Never.

  28. Manny Says:

I knew it… Why leave Blanton against McCann when you could put in a guy like Eyre to get him out!

  29. Braves Says:

Blanton should just walk McCann every time he comes to the plate

  30. Keith Says:

Blanton had a good game though

  31. AGH Says:

Did it seem to anyone else that Charlie wasn’t particularly interested in winning this game? Letting Blanton lead off the 6th was an odd decision to me. Letting him pitch into the 8th was pretty pointless, too. Glad to see Joe get his work in–at least his ERA didn’t take too much of a hit. Pretty typical performance.

  32. Manny Says:

He threw some good pitches, but he also left plenty right on the middle of the plate… A decent start, but definitely not good.

  33. Mickey Says:

Umm keith, its 6 to 1….Please tell me how Blanton had a good game

  34. Bob Says:

I think he means a decent start for a phillies starting pitcher….. not a typical major league starting pitching

  35. Manny Says:

    RAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLL

  36. Johnny Snowden Says:

    RAAAAUUUUUUUL

  37. Keith Says:

    nice Ibanez

    Utley: 10
    Ibanez: 8
    Howard: 6
    Werth: 6

  38. Keith Says:

    9* for Ibanez

cuz he actually went 8 innings and like the announcers said pitched a lot better than what the score says

  39. Georgie Says:

What? I missed the first few innings, but didn’t Joe give up 6 runs in 8 innings? How is that even a decent start? Since when is an ERA of over 5 acceptable for a 3 or 4 starter? There’s no way they can repeat as WFC if these starters keep getting smacked around, holy cow, am I the only one freaking out about all these HRs? YIKES!!!!

  40. AGH Says:

Blanton gave up 2 home runs and 4 extra base hits (including 1 to the pitcher). There were no errors behind him. It what universe is that considered a good outing?

  41. Manny Says:

I guess the right way to put it is: he was “decent” till the 8th inning, before giving up the homer to McCann. The homer to Yunel Escobar was a actually a good pitch.

  42. Keith Says:

well at least the announcers agree with me . . .

  43. Keith Says:

our hitting has been terrible though

  44. Mickey Says:

Keith, first of all, he never should have been allowed to go 8 innings. And i dont give an F what the announcers say, the score is what it is. There were no runs scored because of errors, those were all Blanton’s ERs. 6 runs in 8 innings is NOT a good start!!!!

I think we need to go to a 6 man rotation. I cant stand this nonsense with the starting pitchers any longer.

  45. Keith Says:

    oh well, I don’t agree.

  46. Manny Says:

Did Charlie Manuel fall asleep? I really don’t understand why he let Blanton pitch the 8th when it was a close game… especially against McCann!

  47. Keith Says:

well I thought he was gonna get pinch hit in the 6th

  48. Keith Says:

but it’s nice to see one of our starters going 8 innings for a change

  49. Georgie Says:

Mickey, I agree, I’m almost afraid to turn the freakin game on now, it’s just BAM,BAM outta here almost every day. I gave them a pass for April but you can’t keep up like this, the Mets are starting to win games now.

  50. Manny Says:

    Cmon Eyreeeeee throw some strikes!!

  51. Johnny Snowden Says:

Eyre was successfull last season because he was used situationally, whereas JC was our late inning lefty. Now that manuel and dubee have kinda forced eyre into that role during jc’s absence, we’re seeing why chicago let him go. Glad to see him get out of that tho

  52. Manny Says:

Everyone needs to get on base

  53. Manny Says:

Rollins is killing us as our leadoff hitter… time to move him down the lineup

  54. kl Says:

why did they leave blanton in that long again?? he should have been out way way earlier than the 8th

  55. I'm Chutly Says:

The METS are now in FIRST place.
    Bwahhh!!!!
Too bad there are no take backs in major league baseball. If there were, the Phillies could send Blanton back to the A’s…..HE SUCKS…..Bwahhhh!!!!
    All your pitchers suck…..Bwahhh!!!!!(Except Hamels).
    Raul Ibanez can’t do it ALL…..He needs help…No help hitters suck….Bwahhh!!!!!!(especially J-Roll)
    Like I said:
The METS are now in FIRST place BWAHHHHH!!!!!!

  56. Scheity Says:

Rollins needs to move down…In the organization.

How much better would attendance be in the Lehigh Valley if he were an Iron Pig? I mean, yeah, he’d still bat .210, but the level of freshness in Allentown would be at an all-time high.

  57. Manny Says:

Howard< werth… get on base.. and leave it to RAUUUUL

  58. Scheity Says:

Maybe Jimmy should go on the radio again and whine about Philly fans. That seemed to do the trick last year.

  59. eli Says:

    chase utley is absolutely incredible.

  60. Mike Says:

    God, Mets trolls are stupid.
Of course, if they were smart, they probably wouldn’t like the Mets.

  61. Mickey Says:

Georgie I hear ya, but Im not afraid to turn on the teevee just yet. Its just ridiculous how many bombs these guys are giving up. We cant expect the offense to put up 6 to 8 runs coming from behind every day. Sooner or later the starters need to either start playing like major league pitchers or they need to sit.

Actually Georgie ya know what, I prolly wont watch Moyer’s next start. That was a turd of a contract to begin with and its only gonna get worse every time he goes out unless its against the Marlins.

I know its still early and all, but I think its high time we see what some of these young guys can do for us.

  62. Mickey Says:

And Mike, yes, Mets trolls are some of the dumbest douchebags Ive ever seen. Honestly, Im surprised they know how to get dressed by themselves in the mornings

  63. I'm Chutly Says:

Met fans are trolls? Better a troll than as your beloved Jimmy Rollins put it FRONT RUNNERS. I can’t wait to hear the GO E-A-G-L-E-S chants when September comes. At least we’re loyal to our team. We don’t root for the Jets or Giants, Rangers or Islanders, Knicks or soon to be Nets or Yankees during a METS game. Oh, and we don’t beat up Santa Clause……Classless Fans= Classless Team.
WOW that’s two teams in every major sport. WOW we New York Trollers are doing alright. Thats why OUR TEAMS HAVE ALL THE MONEY.

  64. Ghjkls Says:

    At Chutly

Your right Met fans are so loyal lolol, thats why most of you were ready to give up two weeks ago. You=Pot calling kettle black. If you wanna talk about money look at the price it costs to attend a game in your stadium vs ours, probably why you couldnt sell it out of you tried. Our $29 tickets=your $180 tickets. Go back to your own board.

  65. mikemike Says:

How can any person who talk sports. look at Blanton pitching today and say he pitched a good game. my god if you are that dumb go on the mets blog. Please stop saying these stupid remarks just because he plays for your team. You can’t be serious that you follow sports.

  66. PhilthadelphiaSucksAss Says:

Worst thing about the Phillies is where they play. Philadelphia fans simply don’t deserve a good team.
