Kenshin Kawakami (1-4, 6.41 ERA) vs. Brett Myers (2-2, 5.35 ERA)

Joe Blanton got bombed by a couple home runs. Today the Phillies other home run magnet (the other other is Jamie Moyer) will take the hill against the Braves in a 12:30 special.

Myers last faced the Braves on opening night and got pseudo-shelled: Three home runs en route to a six-inning, four-run performance. Meanwhile, Derek Lowe completely outpitched the offense. It was the classic Phillies loss, circa 2009.

The Phils will face Kenshin Kawakami, who has had trouble adjusting to the majors. The Japanese righty would actually fit with the Phils: He’s given up five home runs this season, and in Cincinnati, he lasted just 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits.

The lineup is in, and Jayson Werth — who might be ailing a bit — is sitting out for Matt Stairs. Carlos Ruiz is back behind the plate, and Pedro Feliz is at third.

Your gameday beer: As it’s Mother’s Day, we’re going with your mom’s favorite beer: Michelob Ultra. Seriously, what woman doesn’t order MU at a bar? (Okay, women with taste don’t.) Because this beer is tasteless, heavily carbonated and plain bad. Women love it because it doesn’t give off the idea of beer. Horrible. But crack one open for Mom, then I won’t blame you if you go fishing for a Dead Guy Ale or something. Eat ham. Ham it up.

And Happy Mother’s Day.

Go Phillies!

  1. Jamie Says:

    What’s Werth ailing from?

  2. Fran Says:

Today is Werth blanket day to women 15+. I heard on the radio that they messed it up and his lips came out bright pink, so now they are giving out coupons instead to claim your blanket at a later date. Maybe he is embarrassed from that.

If anyone is down there can you confirm this?

  3. Jamie Says:

are you phu*cking kidding me? that didn’t even come close to hitting him – it hit the damn bat!

  4. Mickey Says:

Yeah Fran, my wife is at the game and they did indeed screw up the blankets somehow, though shes not sure how. They gave out coupons to get them later

  5. Manny Says:

    Bad start by Brett…

  6. Steve Says:

We need a reliever to pitch the first two innings of every Myers start before we bring him in.

  7. Manny Says:

Wow.. that half inning had the two Bretts pitching. The bad one first and the ace later.

  8. Tim Malcolm Says:

Werth has a little limp. Might not mean anything.

Yeah, shame that ball didn’t actually hit Escobar. Cost the Phils a run.

  9. Jamie Says:

i’m still mad about the HBP call…you’d think the umpire could recognize the difference between the ball hitting a body and it hitting the bat. very different sounds.

  10. Jamie Says:

    wow…that was interesting.

  11. Jamie Says:

okay, we got our money’s worth on that one. i’m a bit concerned with his drop in velocity too…i wonder what’s up with that.

  12. Manny Says:

4 lefties in a row today

  13. SJ Mike Says:

I’m really impressed with Howard’s overall improvement. His defense, his baserunning, and of course hitting.

  14. Manny Says:

AH! Brett gave us another good at bat.. close call

  15. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Livan not starting off on the right foot.I hope thats not a sign of things to come 1-0 Buckos bot 1st

  16. Mike Says:

I was at the game yesterday sitting right behind werth. I asked him how his knee was and he shook his head. I said DL and he said maybe. He will be out for a while. Boy this pitching staff is so bad…Time to change it Charlie.

  17. Manny Says:

Releasing Jenkins will increasingly look like a bad move.

  18. Caleb Says:

Werth stayed down for a while after his clash with the wall yesterday. I’m surprised Stairs can field at all. :o

  19. Mike Says:

Werth told us between innings it started with getting hit on the knee the other night.

  20. Mike Says:

When will the time come and pull Jimmy from the lead off spot.

Victorino, Werth, Utley, Howard, Rollins, Ibanez…etc

  21. Manny Says:

I’d even do Victorino, Utley, Ibanez, Howard, Werth, Rollins…

  22. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

    End 1 Pirates-1/amazins -0

  23. Mike Says:

amazins what?????????????they havent won anything since 86….thats not so amazing

  24. Mike Says:

g-d myers throws alot of pitches and walks batters. jordan is terrible. 40 ks this year and he walks him

  25. Johnny Snowden Says:

Howard is definitely making a case for the gold glove this season

  26. Georgie Says:

Ryan is becoming a STUD at 1st! Unbelievable improvement.

  27. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

no one cares what the score of the Mets game is this is a Phillies blog, Grumpy miner go create your own site for the Mets

  28. mg52 Says:

The guys seem quiet again at the plate. One thing that this team needs to learn is to hit good pitching. They need to go with pitches and put them in play, not wait for cookies to hit out of the yard. Level swings – no uppercuts.
Howard’s defense has been strong. He deserves at least some Gold Glove consideration even now.

  29. Matt Says:

shout out to sarge for staying behind Ruiz’s back
I know he’s not the best of hitting catchers in the league, but he knows Phillies pitchers better than anyone and can apparently settle them down. Secondly, heis is our best defensive catcher, as shown in the latter half of last season
Also, he manages the plate as a hitter much better than Chris Coste, and Lou Marson do.
Ruiz will get going offensively, just needs time

  30. Geoff Says:

That was a solid quality outing from Brett Myers. Meanwhile, Carlos Ruiz and Chris Coste are so bad at the plate that there is no reason Lou Marson shouldnt be playing right now. I mean this is a dog dirt terrible catching platoon right now at the plate.

Also, Greg Dobbs is nowhere near useful right now as a pinch hitter. The Phillies need to replace Cairo with a good RH bench bat to diversify their bench. Replace Coste with Marson, who I predict will be the starting catcher by the end of the season.

But at least Myers kept it pretty clean today.

  31. Dave Says:

Charlie out-thought himself there. Myers isn’t that bad of a hitter compared to a slumping Dobbs and now we have to hope and pray Taschner doesn’t f#$% up.

  32. Geoff Says:

Taschner, you better get out of this inning unscathed…

  33. Matt Says:

Lou Marson does deserve the spot over Coste, because of batting capability. But, with the way phillies pitchers show inability to control their pitches, and remain confident in their pitches, Ruiz should stay in. Our offense is potent enough to put up runs with him in a slump, but he is more useful defensively now than Marson is.

And why is Taschner in, he has showed 0 productivity as of late. I hate him and he should not be there. Durbin and Condrey should be in there.

  34. Geoff Says:

    wow…thats poor. 4 pitch walk.

  35. Geoff Says:

damn it. release this guy. Taschner has been useless of late, and I think thats enough of him. He has a minor league option if they want to put him in Lehigh.

  36. Dave Says:

Should have switched to Durbin or Madson when Taschner loaded the bases.

  37. Mazinman Says:

I totally agree. I can’t believe he was left there after loading the bases.

22 more games until J.C. comes back and Trashner becomes a distant memory.

    Ugh…. that is so depressing.

  38. Mike Says:

But of course charlie who i have hated since his days with the indians didnt do that. he leaves pitchers in to long. yesterday with i cant pitch blanton. time to make some changes to this team before the mets run away. get happ up and get rid of moyer. get rid of trashner.

  39. mg52 Says:

I’m seriously growing concerned about Rollins. He just took two hittable fastballs and then whiffed at a difficult change-up. Many of these hitters seem to be lost at the plate at certain times. They need to have more confidence in themselves, especially early in the count, and drive the pitches that they end up getting.

  40. Georgie Says:

Crap, have to leave for dinner, taking my aunt out for Mom’s day, recording the rest of the game….

  41. Geoff Says:

I think Rollins needs a change of scenery. However, if youve been following Jason Donald in AAA, theyve been starting him all over the infield this season. Hes played Short, Second, and Third that I know of this season, and I think they are trying to turn Donald into a Super Utility Player (Someone who plays 4/7 times a week merely because he can play so many positions well). Now they need to start using him in the outfield to round out his skillset.

  42. Geoff Says:

So I mean it really makes a difference when a guy like Rollins is playing this poorly because you know what he can do when hes playing well.

  43. Geoff Says:

    Jeez…this is so weak..

  44. mikemike Says:

There is no reason the taschner should pitch again. why do the phillies use this guy. I rather see some one from the minors like koplove or majewski, this guy isn’t a major league pitcher. Comeon Geoff be serious how can you say rollins needs a change of scenery.

  45. Geoff Says:

Wow…Pedro Feliz really has had some bad at bats in recent memory. Him, Ruiz and Coste, and ROllins dont even look like professional ballplayers at the plate.

  46. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Last I checked NoVa….this is America jack.We do have something called Free Speech.I can say what I want, when I want and YOU can’t stop me or tell me what to do.Also if you don’t like what I say,TOUGH.

  47. Mike Says:

does anyone have dishnetwork???? I have comcast in south jersey. I get CSN. PHL 17…If I switch to dish I cant watch any game because there blacked out in my area. I just dont care anymore. I just hate comcast.

  48. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

    Oh and NoVa,Top 7th Mets-3/Pirates -2

  49. Mike Says:

thats greay grrrrummmmmmmmmmphhhhy.. congrats on your wonderful mets. they are so amazing to choke every year.

  50. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

I choose Dish Network over Cable and DirecTV.Better programming and more babg for the buck,PLUS i get ABC/NBC/CBS east/west coast feed from NY and San Fran,so I get the S.F. Giants and an extra NFL game from the west coast.

  51. Mike Says:

i cant watch phillie games correct? i live in bordentown nj

  52. Mike Says:

    brad lidge succkkkkssss this year

  53. Geoff Says:

Man Rollins looks like a real lame duck stink dog out there man.

  54. Dave Says:

Still not worried about Lidge, everyone?

  55. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

I offer no excuses from the last 3 years Mike.I know my Amazins spit the bit and we all know what happened last year.Like I say,I don’t look for or offer excuses,I just want results..Thats all.

  56. The Little Guy Says:

Its May 10th everyone, calm down

  57. The Little Guy Says:

Wheels loves saying they’re in a no doubles defense

  58. Caleb Says:

Is today swing at first pitch day?

  59. Johnny Snowden Says:

one of these days we’re going to a good start AND some offense.

  60. Mike Says:

the problem is the mets have not won since 86……thats a long time. im a huge ny giants fan. i dont know how i became a phillies fan. maybe because the mets were doing drugs at the time. maybe because there ownership is just plain horrible. maybe becuase there coaches all stink. maybe because they bring in latin showoffs. who knows, they are not a classy team.

  61. Dave Says:

Mike, correct, they don’t have comcast sportsnet philly on any of the dish network plans. Its kinda crappy, nj automatically gets the nyc sports channels…

Almost enough to get me back on comcast, almost.

  62. Tim Malcolm Says:

Dave: No. They were down a run. He should’ve never been in the game.

  63. Bob Says:

Mike….the Phillies are all class – like your starting pitcher today…..Wife Beaters are super classy.

  64. Mike Says:

    what do you have dave?

  65. AC Says:

It’s really amazing how you phillies fans, who now have the pleasure of having just enjoyed a World Series title, are still obsessed with the Mets – both the fans and the players. Get over it.

  66. Geoff Says:

feeble way to end the game there. I dont see how you can send J-Hole out there anymore.

  67. Bob Says:

BUTTTTTTT HES BETTER THEN JOSE REYES…..RIGHTTTT

  68. Mike Says:

im not saying there all classy. i go to one game a year becasue its so pricey. i dont watch sports like i used to. NBA I cant watch but one second. NFL I still love even with the thugs. Baseball is getting harder with steroids, 10 40 year old pitchers. teams that stink. its not the same growing up

  69. David, the Mets fan from Queens Says:

    Mike,

I can understand why the Mets’ flamboyant and demonstrative attitude would frustrate you, but their ethnic backgrounds are irrelevant to your spiff – unless you’re a naive bigot or racist.

Please, try your best to NOT sound ignorant.

    David

  70. AGH Says:

AC, the fans on this site are not obsessed with the Mets. This whole back and forth started because a Mets fan is constantly peppering the board with updates on the Mets score. It would seem that the obsession is on the other end, which I don’t understand. Why not just root for the Y

  71. Mike Says:

I wont just dont like the latins in baseball. sorry dave. i wont be ignorant because i am…..reyes is a punk….

  72. AGH Says:

AC, the fans on this site are not obsessed with the Mets. This whole back and forth started because a Mets fan is constantly peppering the board with updates on the Mets score. It would seem that the obsession is on the other end, which I don’t understand. Why not just root for the Yankees?

  73. The Little Guy Says:

Maybe were obsessed with the Mets because it’s a rivalry, both good teams, and both don’t like each other.

They Yankees and Red Sox fans are the same way. Stop acting like we shouldn’t want to rub it in the faces of the Mets just because we won the Series.

IMO, that gives us more of a reason to rub it in, well, because the Mets are a bunch of losers, who, for some reason act like they have won multiple championships with all the arrogance on their team.

  74. Vicky 08 Says:

    The sky is falling

  75. TwoTonsOfIrony Says:

Can anyone explain to me how Taschner is a better 7th inning option than either Condrey or Durbin, or even Happ the way he’s been pitching lately. Is it just me or has Taschner been getting more rope than he deserves? It seems like they are trying to get as many innings out of him before they dump him when Romero comes back. He is seemingly our worst pitcher in the pen, what makes Charlie/Dubee think that he could complete a hold against righties.

  76. AC Says:

    Little Guy:

Fair enough. But IMO, Mets fans think about the Phillies and their fans way less than the Phillies dwell on the Mets and their fans.

  77. metsies Says:

    :)

  78. The Little Guy Says:

    AC, fair enough.

  79. Bravo22 Says:

Go Braves. Its only getting worse yankees – our farm is strong. But, you folks have to know that the best ball players come from the south and the west.

  80. Dave Says:

Tim, first it’s “oh, he’s in a no-pressure situation,” then it’s “oh, they were DOWN one run instead of up one run.”
Look, I understand that the pressure’s off and he’ll probably pitch worse, but at the same time, he’s supposed to be the best relief pitcher that we have. That fact alone should keep his ERA under 6, at the very least.

  81. Matt M Says:

Honestly, the worst part about the Phillies losing is that Geoff will come on here and spew his bullshit and trash every Phillie who had a bad game. This game is on Manuel and the offense outside of Howard and Stairs. There is no way anybody can convince me that Taschner was the best option to pitch the 7th inning with the relievers Tim mentioned. And where do Mutts fans get the balls to start talking? What happened to that hole you’ve been in all season until Monday? If being in first on May 10th is the high point of your season then I honestly feel bad for you.
Yes the Phillies have problems, but so do the Mutts, Marlins and Braves. There are still 133 games left and the Phils are only one loss back. When you pop the corks in Septmeber and October, you can come back and run your tootheless little mouths. Until then enjoy being behind the Yankees, Giants, Jets, Rangers, Nicks, and Islanders in terms of importance in your own city.

  82. Caleb Says:

Don’t forget the New York Epic, the NY Professional dodge ball team.

  83. Georgie Says:

Well, it was hardly worth watching the replay of the last three innings, but of course I did anyway. I think they walked Ruiz intentionally in the 6th to force Charlie’s hand and pinch hit for Myers, didn’t want to face him anymore. And it worked.

haha, my uncle was talking about a new beer he bought, said it tastes like water, guess what it was? Michelob Ultra!!!!
