Gameday: Nationals (13-35) At Phillies (27-20)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, May 31, 2009 12:00 PM
Washington Nationals (13-35) at Philadelphia Phillies (27-20)
John Lannan (2-4, 4.11 ERA) vs. Jamie Moyer (3-5, 7.42 ERA)
Time: 1:35 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Mostly sunny, 76
TV: MyPhl 17
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Thanks to Ryan Howard’s mammoth home runs, the Phillies will win a home series. The big man led the way in a 9-6 win over the Nationals. The Phillies are now 9-2 against the Nationals this season.
Jamie Moyer still seeks win No. 250, and he’ll try to do it against a team he faced early this season and had some success against. He beat Washington April 13, going six innings and giving up four runs. If he repeats that outing and the offense can do what it’s done the last two nights, Moyer should get that elusive victory.
And the offense has seen John Lannan plenty of times; in two outings this season, the Phillies have hit him (10. 2 IP, 15 H), but they weren’t getting them all home (6 ER). Maybe Chase Utley can help that out — he’s 3-for-5 with two homers against Lannan this season.
The bullpen has done a great job lately, holding the last two very tense contests against Washington. Part of that is not letting the longball beat them — they have only allowed one home run in the last 52.2 innings (Alex Rodriguez).
The Phillies are 16-11 for May as we reach its final day.
Your gameday beer: Jamie Moyer, born in 1809, used to tend to sheep and dogs on his parents’ prairie house in eastern West Virginia. In his honor, drink a beer that signifies his birth year: 1809, from Brauerei Weihenstephan. This German “Berlin Style” Weissbeer is half pilsner and half wheat. It’s the perfect light and refreshing summer beer. Have a burger and an 1809.
Go Phillies!

It’s seriously about time we win one of Jamie’s starts. Good lord. I can’t even remember the last time we did. The offense HAS to step up today. Last time out Jamie kept us in the game and the offense went flat against the fish.
Also, a special thanks to Jerry Manuel for benching Wright, Sheffield, and Castillo yesterday with Reyes and Delgado already out of the lineup. People don’t honestly still think he’s a good manager do they?
May 31st, 2009 at 1:21 pm
Hmm..m, Jerry Manuel must be doing something right for his team to be 27-21 what with all the issues and injuries that occurred with the club. I don’t think he is carrying a magic wand to plug all those holes with with a makeshift lineup. I think their success has more to do with pitching..both the rotation and that bullpen.
The Phillies must duplicate the series sweep by the Mets over the Nats earlier in the week.
Let’s go Jamie Moyer and the Phillies!
May 31st, 2009 at 1:47 pm
I think the mets have solved there bullpen problems. which makes them a lot stronger, there top of the rotation guy Santana is better thans ours and showing it, after them, they have better starters than us , but that is because we have nothing relieable to send out there.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Would have liked to see Mayberry get a start unless he’s on his way back down to Lehigh.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:50 pm
But the Mets are missing heart, which makes a bigger difference over the course of the season. You can have a bunch of prima donna all-stars, but it doesn’t mean you’re going to win. Take a look at the Yankees over the past decade.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:50 pm
woo, close call by the umps there. glad it went the right way.
May 31st, 2009 at 1:51 pm
What, you mean that’s not an out? Tag him with an empty glove, then pick up the ball?
May 31st, 2009 at 1:55 pm
mikemike, its only May 31st. There is still a little more than 4 months to ago. We can’t make presumptions already but I do agree that the Mets are better than last year and the Mets currently have a 1-0 lead on the Marlins after 3 innings. CHASE UTLEY DELIVERS!! after rollins grounds, vic walks and utley hits his 8th double of the year to bring in vic. Utley’s 33rd rbi. Utley now 4 for 6 with 2 homers vs Lannan this year. As good as Adam Dunn is at hitting homers the more woeful he is at playing defense. Next year he should play in the AL as DH so he can only focus on his hitting. Full count on Howard and he is called out on strikes. Ibanez up now. He’s struggling lately. His BA has now dropped to .333 and he is now second in NL in hrs and rbi. Lannan gets ahead 0-2. Ibanez’s struggles continues as he strikes out swinging. So after Utley doubles in Vic Howard and Raul both strike out.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:02 pm
The Mets are not only missing heart, but they are selfish. Their biggest issue though is injuries. 4 of their starting 9 have spent time or are on the DL. Their rotation is not better than the Phillies but they are currently pitching better than ours. Our bullpens are pretty even, and I think would be in our favor if Lidge got his stuff under control and got back to even close to what he was last year. They have Putz, Feliciano and Parnell, we have Madson, Condrey and Eyre…with Romero on his way back. I think at the end of the day, all things being equal, the Phils are clearly better.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:03 pm
How about Jayson Werth having a day today? The lefty is out there for him. It looks like Raul is starting to have a little trouble seeing the ball so we need Jayson to step it up and knock a few out of the park.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Really the whole Mets vs. Phillies argument is so hard to even discuss at this point because both teams look great the Nats and look to be about .500 against everyone else. Aside from us each taking 2 out of 3 from the beasts of the AL East I don’t think either team has been very impressive.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:05 pm
great against* the Nats, sorry
May 31st, 2009 at 2:06 pm
WOO HOO!!!
May 31st, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Nice to see the bottom of the order bringing the bats!
May 31st, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Unbelievable Costey! Are you kidding me?! I was just about to comment how I feel bad for the guy because he was starting to hit and then Ruiz got hot so he hasn’t been playing, but it obviously hasn’t bothered him. Turning the lineup over, too! YES!
May 31st, 2009 at 2:08 pm
I don’t want to hear anyone now say Coste should be traded or released for 30 days LOL
May 31st, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Prototype Werth at bat. Take 2 strikes and then swing and miss at a ball. Why can’t anyone tell him to swing before he takes 2 strikes.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Jeff I find it funny that fans like us watch game after game and continue to say that and no adjustment has been made. It is most definitely his biggest problem. Most of those pitches that he is taking are fastballs too which is an even bigger problem. So frustrating.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Wow Jamie looked like an 80 year old right there.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Is it just me or does Moyer look sickly? He looks really really skinny to me. I know he has never ever been a big guy but something just seems a bit off. Maybe its just me.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:13 pm
OK Jamie: I want to see that 250th win, so let’s leave the fielding to Howard!
May 31st, 2009 at 2:14 pm
@Ed: agreed. They seem to be out for themselves…at least some of them.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:14 pm
He looks fine to me.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:15 pm
Ed I think it might have something to do with his haircut he got….he looks a lot different.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:16 pm
He’s given up one hit and no walks in 3 innings. If that’s the work of a sickly 80 year old man, then we could use a few more of them.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Might be it Miles.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:19 pm
I totally agree Tracey, i was just referring to him tripping over himself at first. Wasn’t exactly graceful…haha.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Yes, it is the haircut, I noticed that. We are used to him having a lot of “side-hair”.
@ Tracey – agreed. This is a great outing and I hope we can see at least 3 more innings from him with the same results.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Rats. Well, one run in 4 innings isn’t so bad…
May 31st, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Ahhhhh brutal pitch
May 31st, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Cmon you gotta give him that curveball….
May 31st, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Oof… settle down, Jamie…
May 31st, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Oh well, only one…
May 31st, 2009 at 2:37 pm
(looking at Jamie’s hair during this long at-bat…) Yeah, that’s a bit short, and it is making him look old, but it will probably be a good thing in the hot, humid Philly summer.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:40 pm
I think the haircut makes him look younger… he’s definitely feeling younger today with a good performance so far.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:43 pm
RAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL triples!!
May 31st, 2009 at 2:43 pm
BEAUTIFUL!!!
RAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL!
May 31st, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Rauuuuuul
May 31st, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Cmon Werth you gotta get Raul in!
May 31st, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Does any1 remember the stump the phan question…. Was it the 3 phillies pitchers to throw a 9 hit shutout in the last 30 years or for the whole history of the team?
May 31st, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Nice comeback by Werth
May 31st, 2009 at 2:46 pm
God bless you John Lannan….I was so close to cursing Werth’s name for blowing it again but that walk bailed him out
May 31st, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Werth needs a fly ball right here.
On a separate note, John Maine just left the game due to injury for the Metsies.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Unfortunately, I am on Extra Innings and on the DC feed. I have the XM on with Larry and Acott, but they don’t ask it there….
May 31st, 2009 at 2:47 pm
HEYO Nationals defense!
May 31st, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Woo hoo!
May 31st, 2009 at 2:48 pm
I meant Scott^
Nice defense
May 31st, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Hernandez comes up huge again for the Nats.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Yeah I don’t think the Maine injury will hurt the Mets today at least. The offense for the fish is nowhere to be found. They will most likely shut it down with Putz and KRod.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Yeah, the Mets offense has done nothing all day as well. They got a walk, sac bunt and a double inside the bag to score their one run. The Marlins hit a double off the top of the wall and another double a few innings later and had 1st and 3rd one out and hit into a line drive double play. I’m watching both games.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:55 pm
perhaps that great Mets pen will help the fish get 2…
May 31st, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Putz has not been as solid as the numbers indicate. K-Rod yes, but he becomes less so as the season moves on. It will be interesting if Wagner comes back.
May 31st, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Really nice performance by Jamie today. He deserves this #250.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Let’s hope the defense and offense allow him to get #250. That hopefully should get him into the HoF and retire #50 one day…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Well, the Mets just scored 2 more, so it’s 3-0 now, that one is pretty much over.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Griffin, I agree, but the Fish do surprise you once in a while, so we can only hope…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:05 pm
True, and after the Mets scored their two runs, it was still 1st and 3rd no one out, but they didn’t score any more. So it’s 3-0 heading to the 8th, Putz coming in.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Pitch #106 was a nasty one from Lannan.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:08 pm
As I said, Putz is not as solid as the numbers indicate. He pulls a lot of load ‘em up, get ‘em out stuff. he already has complained he wants to close somewhere, so I am thinking his morale is not 100%. He DOES work though, so he gets the job done in the end. It is just one of those things. We can also hope for some great Mets defense LOL. Again, I want to get a lead on them, it is tough always watching both games to make sure we an stay in first!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:10 pm
Nice gentle throw by Howard this time
May 31st, 2009 at 3:12 pm
If the Nats were smart, they would build around Lannan, Zimmerman and Johnson. They would be scary if they actually got their pitching down!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Nice catch by Jamie too. He wants this win!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:14 pm
M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC #54, it looks like you’re spot on about Putz. He’s given up 1 run already and there are runners on 1st and 2nd with one out and they are replacing Putz with Parnell.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:16 pm
3-2 now in the Mets game, fish have runners at the corners with one out.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:19 pm
6IP 8H 6ER 7SO 1BB
6IP 3H 1ER 4SO 0BB
Against the same lineup. Which one looks more like your ace?
So Hamels had a bad game and everyone says he had an off day give him a break. When Moyer has an off day it’s we need to take him outback and get rid of him, he stinks, he is washed up, he needs to retire.
All you Moyer haters look at today’s game and his last two starts and its obvious that he still has it. So get off his case.
The Big Dipper
May 31st, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Damn, Mets got out of the inning. 3-2 going to the 9th.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Griffin looking at Gameday it looks like Hermida flew out to the track with two outs. Brutal.
So are we gonna actually score some insurance runs tonight? I seriously do not want to go through another close game. Plus we need to give Madson and Lidge a little bit of a rest.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:23 pm
The difference is that Hamels is a superstar. Moyer has never reach his level. Look what Hamels did the in the post season you dip.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Yeah, Hermida hit the ball to the track. Oh well.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:26 pm
argh
May 31st, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Dam we are making an AWEFUL WILLINGHAM look like Ruth.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:32 pm
@Big Dipper: Yeah, Moyer has had some rough games, but he’s had some poor run support and some poor relief pitching.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:32 pm
In the last 30 years, shutout with 9 hits — Myers, Schilling, Koosman
May 31st, 2009 at 3:33 pm
(that’s the stump the fans q, for those who missed it)
May 31st, 2009 at 3:34 pm
And Moyer has had some HORRIBLE CONSECUTIVE starts this year… Hamels only had a couple at the beginning of the season… and we ALSO gave him a hard time…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:35 pm
We’re gonna need a couple more runs to make sure Jamie gets his 250th.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Phanatic is looking impatient.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Yeah, Jamie could definitely use a bit of a comfort zone…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Utley’s been good today… getting on base, getting nice hits…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:40 pm
OK Ryan: we could definitely use one of those 3rd deckers… but I’ll settle for a first decker…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:41 pm
YES!!!!!!!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:41 pm
That’ll do!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Not a happy pitcher.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:43 pm
It’s amazing, the offense always seems primed for a gun fight but when the starting pitchings good then some of the key components just disappear… I’ve never understood this teams inability to play a little small-ball when necessary, seems the more pressure to play fundemental baseball the more bad outs and mistakes.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:43 pm
OK, let’s wrap this one up quick and put Jamie’s 250 in the books…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:44 pm
… And then Ryan hits a bomb!
Who says fundamental baseball works!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:45 pm
KRod has certainly been dominating….so the Mets did do one thing we apparently cannot. Take 2 out of 3 from the Marlins at home.
I can’t believe we are throwing Madson again. I would rather save him and hope someone else can get the Nats out. I just have nightmares of him getting hurt because he is overworked.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:48 pm
The Mets win is final, so we need this one to keep 1st place.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I was thinking the same about Madson, Miles… lets hope he can finish this inning quickly…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Beautiful K!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:51 pm
go-ahead run at the plate… don’t you *DARE* take this away from Jamie…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:52 pm
This is dangerous…. Dunn with 2 on base against a righty… ahhhh!!!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:53 pm
WHEW!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Nevermind.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Very, very nice. Oh, Fish did score two, but Mets also did and won… If you all discussed, my apologies
May 31st, 2009 at 3:57 pm
TMac just mixed up Werth with Howard. Is that even possible?
May 31st, 2009 at 3:57 pm
@Miles: Yeah, I noticed that, but hey, they look so much alike…
May 31st, 2009 at 3:58 pm
STAIRS!!
May 31st, 2009 at 3:58 pm
We should bring in Ruiz to catch for Lidge. Something about Coste when Lidge is in there isn’t right. Something is off in that battery.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:59 pm
Nevermind. Good switch on the basepaths.
May 31st, 2009 at 3:59 pm
@Rookie: Stairs is pinching for Coste, so it looks like that’s what they’re planning.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Oops… nope, I’ve lost track. Ruiz is running for Coste; Stairs is PH for Madson.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Yuk. good pitches
May 31st, 2009 at 4:01 pm
OK, JROLL: Let’s not waste those two men on base…
May 31st, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Cmon Matt…that bounced like 5 feet in front of the plate. We should really be better at tacking runs on then we have been. You gotta put teams like the Nats away when you can because they will give up.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:02 pm
*SIGH*
May 31st, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Ok, Brad, make it three in a row!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Do it for Jamie, BRAD!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:03 pm
0-5 for Jimmy….and he continues to slowly descend back towards the Mendoza line.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:05 pm
If Lidge loses this one Jamie will personally kick Lidge’s rear end today behind the flagpole.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Lets go Lidge!!!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Ok, this strike zone tightened
May 31st, 2009 at 4:07 pm
I take that back
May 31st, 2009 at 4:09 pm
That got his attention
May 31st, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Rauuul
May 31st, 2009 at 4:10 pm
I bet 30% of the fans at the game don’t even know that Jamie is about to get his 250th career win…
May 31st, 2009 at 4:11 pm
OK, so far less tension than usual for Lidge this year, but still more tension than I’d like from our perfect closer…
May 31st, 2009 at 4:11 pm
YES!!!!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:12 pm
WHAT AN OUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!! NICE CHASEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CONGRATS JAMIE MOYER!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Congrats Jamie for #250….
Good job Brad Lidge
May 31st, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Finally #250 is in the books! I was very tired of hearing about it but I’m also very happy for Jamie that he finally reached his milestone. Jamie Moyer for the Ashburn Award!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:12 pm
YAY JAMIE!!!
OLD GUYS RULE!!!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:12 pm
ANd excellent for Chase and Howard – WOW
May 31st, 2009 at 4:13 pm
It’s always hard to achieve those benchmarks, and once they’re passed it gets much easier.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:13 pm
They’re playing Harry’s “High Hopes” on Phan-o-Vision
May 31st, 2009 at 4:14 pm
I don’t want to hear a word for 30 days that Jamie or Costey need to go. We need to see how Bastardo does, then decide about what or whom we need. Good job Phillies.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Lidge and Ruiz get it done. That’s the combo that works.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:16 pm
CHASE UTELY YOU ARE THE MAN!!!!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:17 pm
I think that scruffy look is part of what makes him look old. The gray stubble makes him look like an alcoholic bum on a street corner.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Tracey, #250 says he can keep it though and look like a bum if he can get 251-260 this season LOL
May 31st, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Oh, if he keeps pitching like today, he can look any way he wants!
May 31st, 2009 at 4:24 pm
You know what I hear from LA and Scott – One more win ties Jamie Moyer with Bob Gibson. Puts it in perspective.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:42 pm
He is 46 years old when did Gibson get his. are you kidding. How many games did gibson pitch compared to moyer. I don’t understand people how could you ever compare moyer to gibson.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Gibson has 55 less starts, and 16 less losses.
May 31st, 2009 at 4:55 pm
So is it Moyer’s fault that Gibson could not pitch into his 40s like he can?
Moyer has done something very special especially in this era of baseball, pitching into your 40s and continuing to be successful so don’t try to tear down his 250 wins.
The Big Dipper
May 31st, 2009 at 9:00 pm
I can’t even answer that its too weird a statement, You can’t compare the era. there were no water down talent when gibson pitched, Right now there are so many teams who don’t have a number one. if you watch the game today sarge touch on it .There are how many more teams now then when gibson pitch. They have expansion and water down the talent.
June 1st, 2009 at 1:11 am
And tons of steroids, more Homers more RBI’s. Keep trying mikemike. The man has an OUTSTANDING outing, and you still hate him. Got find the Muts website or be a phan.
June 1st, 2009 at 5:01 am
Gibson – Retired at 39 /// record 251-174 /// 2.91 ERA /// SO 3117
Moyer – Age 46 /// record 250-190 /// 4.73 ERA /// 2274 SO
No doubt Gibson was a strikeout and much more rounded pitcher; so yes, we cannot capmare apples and oranges. But remember in Gibson’s day ball parks were much larger and all of the things Brian said are true today. Expansion had not much to do with it.
