Gameday: Phillies (19-16) At Nationals (11-24)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sun, May 17, 2009 12:38 PM
Philadelphia Phillies (19-16) at Washington Nationals (11-24)
Chan Ho Park (1-1, 6.00 ERA) vs. Jordan Zimmermann (2-1, 5.90 ERA)
Time: 1:35 p.m. at Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.
Weather: Cloudy, 61
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
We did scream “Rauuuuuul!” enough last night. Today, the Phillies hope they scream past the Nationals and earn a four-game road sweep.
Chan Ho Park — coming off some good starts — gets the ball today. The aggressive Park will face the Nationals for the first time this season.
Meanwhile Jordan Zimmermann faces the Phils for the first time in his career. The rookie has had a tough May, notching an ERA of over 8.00 in three starts against Saint Louis, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Your gameday beer: Here’s Magic Hat’s Lucky Kat, an American pale that’s pretty basic by design. Light feel but bitter at the end, it’s perfect with an Italian hoagie on this rainy Sunday.
Go Phillies!

Rollins/Utley/Ibanez/Howard/Werth/Victorino/Feliz/Ruiz/Park
May 17th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
I’m wearing my RAUUUUUUL t-shirt today and going to the Nats ballpark! Section 405 up to the 5th inning… then working my way behind the Phillies dugout! hehe
GO PHILS!
May 17th, 2009 at 1:27 pm
Ibanez batting 3rd again, I like it.
May 17th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Rollins with a 7 game hitting streak
May 17th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
And… they’re OFF!
May 17th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Oops… and speaking of off…
May 17th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
wtf Rollins
May 17th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
I’m glad Jimmy is getting on base and running right away.
May 17th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
wow raul actually flied out. hes been slumping lately and needs to pick up his game
May 17th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
the sarcasm
May 17th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
guilty
May 17th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
1-0 Phillies
May 17th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
alright, small ball this inning, nothing but singles, i love it
May 17th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Ruiz been killing it what are his all star chances if he keep his #’s up because in the NL besides Martin who else is an allstar.
May 17th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
seriously though, shane needs to pick up his game, sure he started great and thats nice but obp is below 300 now
May 17th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Mike.. Soto and McCann come to mind
May 17th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
make that 3-0 Phillies
May 17th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
@Michael N: probably still an outside chance he makes it. but hes definatley not a surefire thing. for one thing, people recognize martin because hes in los angeles and hell get a ton of vote just for that. plus ruiz was also injured for a few weeks and hasnt gotten the same playing time. he still might make it but hell probably get in through manager/player selection
May 17th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
sarcasm again cuz Ruiz isn’t gonna make it lol
May 17th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
@Jim: How’s that base-clearing double as a pick-me-up?
May 17th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
christian guzman is simply an animal this year.
May 17th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
Keith: no sacrasm , perhaps some outright homerism, yes, but no sarcam
May 17th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Hmn… I see Park is off to his usual blazing start… :\
May 17th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
4-6-3 would be nice here
May 17th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Park needs to stop fooling around lol
May 17th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Yeah, that’s the spirit, Jim! We’re just setting them up for a fall!
May 17th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
interesting, the nats actually have an offense this year, or atleast a respectable lineup. normally 2 men on and no out is no problem becuase the next three guys have averages around 240. not this year.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Ibanez can get the triple crown this year
May 17th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
And the Nats managed to get their Ws into the double-digits before the All-Star Break.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Park is getting smacked around
May 17th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
rittenhouse square shall be renamed chan ho park
May 17th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
I am better than JA Happ I paid Charlie for the job I a smart man
May 17th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
oh good grief…
May 17th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
come on Park
May 17th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
how much longer do we have to watch this disgrace for a starting pitcher go out there every 5 days? The guy has always been a bum and because he pitched well in spring training they decided to screw over Happ and make Park a starter when he is probably not as good as anyone in the Iron Pigs rotation.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
the quality start is gonna disappear in the first inning, never fun
May 17th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Where did I put that Pepto Bismol?
May 17th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
That was not a wild pitch IMO.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Park is certainly back to his old ways. Werth probably should have had one of those two balls btw. We gotta get out of this thing with at least a tie. Brutal Chan Ho!
May 17th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
OH COME ON! REALLY!?
May 17th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Wow, this is embarrassing.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
need a DP
and pinch hit for Park in the 2nd
May 17th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
WILD THING! YOU MAKE MY HEART SING!
May 17th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Ed, the problem is with how two-faced Park is. He went pitch for pitch with Santana and then had another great start last time out. He does just well enough to keep himself in the rotation and then he goes out and pitches like crap again.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
the Phillies are the World Champions
May 17th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
“This just isn’t good.” No, LA, it isn’t.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Taschner up and throwing! Looks like this one could be an old-fashioned bloodbath!
May 17th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
@Keith: Obviously Park misheard that one, and thought he was supposed to be the World F-Up Champion.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
That second out took awhile
May 17th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
hey we’re still tied
May 17th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I agree Miles, Chan Ho has had his good moments but not enough in my opinion. If we didn’t have a guy like Happ who has pitched so well this season then it wouldn’t be such an issue to me. But because we have a suitable replacement just waiting for the chance then I think its time we make the move.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
WHOOSH! OK, now a pinch hitter for Park…
May 17th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I really wish he would at least attempt to throw more strikes. At least half of the time Carlos is set up a foot outside and he throws it out there and low.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Park is sorry that he sucked today but u gotta think he’ll do better in the 2nd
May 17th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
cuz we’re not pinch hitting for him, ut oh
May 17th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
what a horrible AB
May 17th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Guzman can flat out rake. That was a damn good pitch.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:25 pm
Chan Ho Park, Moyer, and Blanton are just a waste. You are not going to get alot of wins with them. You are up 3 against Washington that should be enough. He gives it right back. Amazing…..
May 17th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
well Jeff who should join Hamels and Myers then?
May 17th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Park to be traded after the game for cottage cheese?
May 17th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
the answer Keith is Happ and then no one. There is no one else in our farm system right now that is ready to be a starter at the big league level. I know everyone is ready to throw kids like Carrasco and Stutes into the fire but THEY ARE NOT READY. It’s a fact.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
okay we’ll go with 3 starters then
May 17th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
We got problems.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:30 pm
OK, this is ridiculous, and it looks like Charlie knows it.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
GET HIM OUT OF THE GAME. MAN…
May 17th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Serious, Charlie should put in Happ as the reliever here, to show Park what’s at stake.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Anyone ready to sign Pedro?
May 17th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Park is still in and he is ready to give us a DP
May 17th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Well, there goes the mulligans Park built up. This start was so bad that he burned two mulligans with this one. You cant get out of the second inning? Come on man.
Ladies and Gentlemen, your new 5th starter: JA Happ.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
At this point, id be willing to let Kendrick try it again with the way the triumvirate of Moyer, Park and Blanton are doing. Throw Kendrick out there with Happ and I guess keep Moyer in there…not that I think he deserves to be but what else do you do with him? Can’t send him to the minors and I doubt they would just release him.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Oh, BRILLIANT Chan Ho. Let’s walk the go-ahead run home.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
I’m gonna have to turn the game off for now. It is one thing to see a guy get hit around but another to see a guy who looks like he doesn’t even give a s**t.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
why would we sign Pedro? he’s not good anymore.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
this is nuts. walking guys. 65 pitches in the second. park stinks
May 17th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Charlie was inching around the dugout step this whole inning.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
that was pathetic. i hate to say it, but i think i’d rather have Eaton than Park… yikes i can’t believe i said that
May 17th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Here is what I don’t get…we are only down one…it’s still a game and we bring in Jack Taschner, arguably the worst reliever we have?
May 17th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
we could send Moyer to the minors if he accepts
May 17th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
actually i take that back. Eaton’s numbers are even worse right now.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Haha I agree Keith I was just trying to make everyone realize that we are about at that point right now.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Moyer should be next to go with his 8+ ERA
May 17th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Park will be traded after the game for a good amount of cottage cheese
May 17th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
I would not be surprised to see Dukes knock one out right here.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Forget it….Harris is back in.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Here we go…
May 17th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
I will be, he isn’t playing anymore
May 17th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Atta boy Jack! Doin work already!
May 17th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
what the….
May 17th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
(grumble grumble grumble)
May 17th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Charlie is laughing at how great the cottage cheese trade will be
May 17th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Can someone throw a strike and get a ground ball?
May 17th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
wow…this is almost to the point of hilarious but not. I hope when J.C Romero makes his return, and hopefully it is at home he gets a 5 minute standing ovation. I hope Taschner has his golf clubs readily available.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
That works too
May 17th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Taschner just got a DP, everybody dance
May 17th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Thank GOD for Pedro.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
glad we got out of that..but cmon seriously..jack taschner??!!? bring in someone good for once!!
May 17th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
hahahahahah
May 17th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Five runs. They should have none. All those walks. How do you walk in two runs.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
HEY GUYS I’M A MET FAN
May 17th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
and taschner plunks someone. charlie is so mad right now. taschner should be sent down after today. escalona should get a chance. im not counting on anything from jc romero – he could be great but he also hasnt played and was caught using an illegal supplement and might not be the same. Maybe now we know why he suddenly turned himself around miraculously upon his arrival here.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Mets fan, go to Mets Blog dot com – we don’t like immature Mets fans
May 17th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
and now we have Mets trolls
May 17th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Geoff, it was an energy supplement, not roids. Give the man a chance, and if he sucks, we will find someone…
May 17th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Has it been an hour since Ibañez’s last at bat?
May 17th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Utley walks and Ibanez homers?
May 17th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Romero will be fine and Hamels-Myers are having fun
May 17th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
I wear training bras with my friends and have slumber parties where we play with stuffed unicorns
May 17th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Apparently the Phillies are going to wear these during their July 4th game…http://shop.mlb.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3605382&cp=3603145
Just thought I’d share.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
I agree, Park has now officially pitched his way out of the rotation in my opinion. By no means do I think he’s gonna come in here and be Carlton, but it’s time to see what Happ can do.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
This is going well…
May 17th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
well at least we start with 2 walks
May 17th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Ed, I like them
May 17th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Now if we can keep Ryan from hitting into a DP
May 17th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
Better than a DP if we look at a bright side
May 17th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Geoff, everytime one of our players sucks you can’t just pick out someone from the minors who you think would do better. Most of them do better in the minors because, well, they are playing against other guys who aren’t ready for the big leagues.
I know we tend to think that our FO doesn’t know what they are doing but I give them the benefit of the doubt that they know whether someone is ready for the big club or not.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Ugh
May 17th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
come on Victorino
May 17th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
boo
May 17th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
I agree, I like them a lot. I think they will look pretty awesome.
Boy did the Nationals get lucky on that one.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Miles, Geoff always does it. yesterday he was ready to dump Lidge. I was waiting for him to want to dump Madson for bnlowing a save. He is a phan, so I like him, but he always does it.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
This bullpen is going to be shot, especially after Moyer goes. thank goodness they have tomorrow off.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
I didnt say Dump Lidge! I said if hes hurt he should hit the DL.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:52 pm
Miles is cranky
May 17th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Ugh.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
My bad, thought you did. You do always want to dump people though LOL
May 17th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
can’t wait until Taschner is out of this game
May 17th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
I think OK-GO wrote the song “Here it Goes Again” after they saw a game that Chan Ho started and Taschner came in to relieve him.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
Well at least sit them down. You cant keep sending guys out there that look that bad. Hitters are different and they come around, but it looks disgraceful until they do. But pitching is different.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
that cannot be funny
May 17th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Geoff be funny laugh a little smile a bit
May 17th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Geoff, we agree there.
I am not sure if Tascher sucks though YET, I think he is finding his groove. he is doing better than Park now…
May 17th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
well we’ll be pinch hitting for him next inning I hope
May 17th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Aw Geoff I’m not cranky. A little perturbed, that’s all. I’m not trying to call you out individually I’m just saying that too often we think there is a quick fix for people not playing well. Now sure we obviously have players that can come up and fill in for guys like Cairo and Bruntlett, but that’s different than a pitcher IMO.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Manuel needs to sit his fat, old butt down with Dubie and JR. get this mess fixed. Get Tashner out of town. Get rid of Park. Get Happ in there. Moyer your stuck with. Leave Blanton alone for now. You need to get this thing figured out. With this offense we should be fine
May 17th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Geoff stop talking about prospects who you know nothing about. the reason he was called up is he has option, he is another 88-89 throwing no chance to stay organization filler. He will go down and mayberry will be called up tomorrrow, its just with park pitching they knew they need another arm. And where is terry I really am worried about him.maybe he has a hangover from the mets parade.
May 17th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
Here is something to remember, Tacshner has to just keep us in the game. Remember their pen is HORRIBLE

May 17th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Is that Jack Tashner in the game?? Is he is the WORST. Thank god he’ll be gone soon. Well, at the start of the season I thought four things had to go right with this pitching staff:
1) Good Brett show up, not Bad Brett;
2) Jamie Moyer 4/5 of what he was last year;
3) Joe Blanton be just average;
4) The fifth starter not open up his veins every start.
None of them have. Soooooooooooooo. Here is my plan:
1) Happ in for Park. Not sayin he’s better but……well, yeah I am.
2) Trade prospects for a solid #2. When I say #2, I mean a 15-8 guy. A legit 2. Examples of legit #2’s: Haren, Harden, Chris Young. These types of guys.
3) Moyer becomes the 5.
4) Nothin you can do about Brett.
Prospects to trade you say? Donald is blocked. So is Marson. If you’re gonna move Donald to third….fine. Keep him. If not?…….uh, trade him.
Marson, Donald, and, lets say Savery can get you a real good pitcher.
Starters:
Hamels
Guy we trade for
Myers
Blanton
Happ
relievers:
Moyer
Park
Eyre
Condrey
Romero
Madson
Lidge

oh so miles was writing that. thank you for telling me LOL
May 17th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
well I’m hoping Park is traded after the game for a good amount of cottage cheese. I can’t see the Phillies getting a solid #2 starter though.
Taschner has done well since the HBP
May 17th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
Well I gotta give it to Jack. That was some good work he put in to keep us in the game. You have officially earned yourself one mulligan, which is one more than Park has.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
I like unicorns oh wait i am using my name I meant to use terry’s
May 17th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
It’s mikemike’s fault the troll is back, he invoked his name, and now he has reappeared, that’s your bad, mikemike, you must let sleeping trolls lie…..
May 17th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
and we start the inning with a man on base
May 17th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
I am stupid i can’t copy terry’s name.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Chan Ho Park needs to be reliever now. He’s had the most success there. Happ looks great so far. Bring him in the rotation. Park can be used when one of our guys is having a bad game park can pitch lots of Ip’s. Let him be a reliever. Joe Savery will come up later in the year or next year. Jack Taschner great job by him after park only goes 1.1IP. Taschner so far: 2.2IP 1H 0R 2BB 2K has lowered his era from 4.50 to 3.86. Howard Werth and Victorino for Phillies in 6th. J Zimmerman starts the 6th with 91 pitches. 5-5 entering the 6th

People, don’t feed the trolls. What trolls want is attention, and the more attention you give them, the less sexually inadequate they feel. Just ignore them and let them take their Viagra to feel adequate.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
The Phillies are the worst team of professional sports. they have the most losses
May 17th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Terry it wasn’t me dude I was just speaking for everyone. But if you and everyone else want to keep acting like children than that’s your choice.

Howard gets hit by the first pitch he see in the sixth. Around the NL East: Dbacks at Braves postponed today. Dodgers leading 6-0 at FLA top 8th. Mets at Giants is the sunday night game on espn. full count on werth and werth flies out to right. Vic is up. this is j zimmerman’s last inning. he’s at 102 pitches. Full count on Vic and Shane Victorino is called out on strikes! 2outs. Feliz is up with howard on first and one out. Phillies enter 1 and half games back of mets today. mets have played 1 game more. Phils win and mets loss today puts phils half a game back. Inning is over as Feliz flies out to right. 5-5 going to bottom of 5th inning. 10-0 dodgers top 8th now.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion

May 17th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Look it up in webster’s dictionary
May 17th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
I was just posting the def.
now back to the game, let’s go Durbin!
May 17th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Why were warnings given there? Because of the Victorino thing? That doesn’t make any sense…
May 17th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
you are a troll there are plenty of caves in PA
May 17th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
I’m guessing that the ump assumed the HBP was intentional retaliation for the previous inning. He fails to notice an important fact: our pitching sucks.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Oh, NICE play Feliz!
May 17th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
If Durbin hit him on purpose there I am gonna be pissed off because we cannot be putting baserunners on in a tie game just to hit the other team cause someone on our team was hit.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Gary Matthews fact time
May 17th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Tracey, both benches got it.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Great job by JTasch. Chad Durbin pitching now. Pitcher’s spot is up next in phillies next inning. Willingham is up for the DC Nationals. And willingham is hit by pitch on the second pitch. Retaliation for Howard maybe? Anderson Hernandez up for Nats now. I think this is how Phillies rotation will look in September: Hamels
Myers
Blanton
Happ
Carrasco/Kendrick/Savery
Park will be either released/in the minors or a reliever with Phillies
Moyer will a be a player-coach
May 17th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
nice inning Durbin
May 17th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
Was it both benches? I thought it was the pitcher and the bench.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
I wonder what will happen in that Dodgers game? Kershaw has a no-no but he has 108 pitches through 7. Maybe one more from him and then Broxton?
May 17th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Travis…..now is that a winning rotation?
The Dipsy
May 17th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Tracey, no he gave both bences. We just happened to be on defense when it happened.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Forget it….Cody Ross just doubled.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
OK: Time for the Phils to break it wide open. We haven’t got all night, people!
May 17th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Travis I would be willing to bet large sums of money that Savery, Kendrick, and Carrasco will not see the field this year unless it’s a spot start.
First of all Savery isn’t even on the radar.
Second of all, Kendrick was scheduled to pitch for Lehigh Valley last night and we still used Carpenter, which shows how much faith they have in him.
And Carrasco is too raw. Maybe if he had an insane couple of months, but I just don’t see those guys near the field. Jamie will still be in the rotation, IMO. His ERA will level out around 5 or 5.5 and he will be a .500 pitcher.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
… or maybe in the next inning… yeah, the 7th would be a good time to break it open…
May 17th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Anderson hernandez pops out to feliz who made a nice play. will nieves strikes out. alex cintron pinch hits for jordan zimmerman. cintron grounds into a force out. a 1-2-3 by durbin after hitting willingham. Ron Villone will now pitch for the Nats. Ruiz, Durbin and Rollins up for Phillies in the 6th. villone 1-0 with a 0.00 era. Ruiz flies out to center. Chad Durbin is batting. In 2AB this year, durbin hitting .500 with 0hr and 0rbi. So durbin start the 6th for phils. Even if the phillies win all 4 games against the nats their bullpen has been used alot in this series and the whole year. Gary Majewski and Mike Koplove will be in bullpen by Mid-June. Gary has pitched well at triple a so far. Durbin flies out to right. Rollins up. HE flies out ot centre. 1-2-3 phils go in 6th.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Abe wins everytime?
May 17th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
Not always Abe, but Teddy loses every time. That’s a running gag, and the Phils announcers don’t quite seem to get it.
May 17th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Ah, Phils pitching… we put the “ugh” in “ugly.”
May 17th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Chad Durbin is pitching for Phillies in the 6th. Guzman up for the Nationals first. Does anyone know whatever happened to J.D Durbin? Guzman singles to leadoff the 6th. nick johnson up next. 3-1 on him. Full count now and Johnson singles. 1st and 3rd with no outs for Ryan Zimmerman. Nats threatning. Cmon Durbin. Dunn is up next for Nationals. The homerun hitters are up for the nationals and one’s at the dish in zimmerman. 2-2 count. Full count. Please Durbin don’t load em up with 0 outs for Dunn. He’s killed us this year. Nats take the lead. Zimmerman hits a very deep sac fly. So nick johnson on first 1 out Dunn batting for Nats now who lead 6-5. Dunn strikes out swinging. willie harris now for the nats. harris pops out to durbin on the first pitch. Nationals lead 6-5 after 6.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
a goofy start
May 17th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Escalona gonna come in
May 17th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Travis why are you giving play by play….
May 17th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
good question
May 17th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
If the Phillies want to do some damage this is their inning. Utley, Ibanez and Howard up for Phillies in the 7th. It’s a new hour now. Villone continues pitching for Nats. Chase up first. Full count on Chase. Utley grounds out. RAAAUUUULLL ibanez up next. And he flies out to left. Howard now for phils
May 17th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
we’ll get them next inning
May 17th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Yuck. Terrible inning. I really want to win this game, we gotta find a way.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
At least moyer can make it past the second inning before giving up 2 runs, unlike Park. WOW. 5 runs in 2 innings?
May 17th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Park tried
May 17th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Here’s your boy Geoff. Hopefully he does you proud.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
still gave up 5 runs int he first two innings. When was he yanked. What im confuse about is why when Moyer pitches it “retire you old geezer” and “you suck” after going scoreless for 4 innings and giving up 3-4 in the 5th, but park gives up 3 in the 1st and 2 in the second inning, and people say “he tried”. Not to attack you Keith, but it seems alot of people do that. Why is there a difference?
May 17th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
I feel like the umpires zones in this series have been either really inconsistent or consistently bad. I never know what is a strike anymore.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
lol I think Park should be traded for cottage cheese after the game, but he did try he just sucks
May 17th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Brian i never say any of those things about Jamie. Maybe some do but I think a lot of us don’t respond that way. The only “difference” between the two is that Moyer has earned his spot in this rotation over his work the last few years and Park has not. Which means that it will be taken away from him very soon.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
I like this Escalona guy
May 17th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
True Miles you and Keith were 2 of only 4 people on here respond that. I would say sadly that most are not willing to give Moyer the chance.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
I think Moyer will be fine, he’ll get back on track. Park needs to be traded for cottage cheese though, a good amount of it. oh and Cairo sucks.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Someone should tell Belliard that he is hitting .200 because he swings like he is Albert Pujols every time he is up.
Good stuff by the kid there. Also good job by Charlie throwing him against the bottom of the lineup to get his feet wet. Let’s get some runs.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
I’m back
May 17th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
the troll is here !!!!
May 17th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Hey, don’t hate on Jamie — Old Guys Rule! He’s earned a bit of patience; Park hasn’t.
Runner on with none out! Woo hoo!
May 17th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
JWerth gettin it done. Get him over Shane.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

May 17th, 2009 at 4:26 pm

May 17th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Yes lets keep it going! Btw if anyone hasn’t heard the story about Tavares signing with the Nats this offseason you have to hear it. Try googling him or something.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
I’ll just ignore that constipated fake me comment.
come on Feliz!
May 17th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
If there was ever a time for Ruiz of Feliz to hit a homer, now would be it.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
happy cavemen bowling
May 17th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

May 17th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
OK, we can definitely use that insurance run from Feliz…
May 17th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
The Nationals hit so well, and field so poorly. I’ve got to think they could fix that by hiring the right coach.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
that wasn’t me Tracey lol
May 17th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Well not a Homer, but I think I can deal
May 17th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

May 17th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

May 17th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Yeah, I figured, Keith. Our resident troll has gotten really desperate.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
they need to get at least one more run out of this inning..
May 17th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
or Brunlett will bat
May 17th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Im sure this will be an out
May 17th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
YES!!! And I don’t usually like Bruntlett
May 17th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
nice Bruntlett*
8-6 Phillies
May 17th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Ahhhhhh why did we just waste Stairs again.
BEARD POWER! Finally some good stuff from Beardlett.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Umm, Why did we just pull Stairs for Bruntlett????
May 17th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
WTF? Who is this guy and what did he do to Eric Bruntlett!
May 17th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
well Bruntlett did get a RBI double
May 17th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
Oh well, I guss when you’re facing the Nat’s pen anything goes, Moyer could probably hit them
May 17th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Cairo would’ve popped up to the catcher on the first pitch
May 17th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
OK: six more outs.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
I don’t think this is the right spot for Eyre. Hopefully I don’t know what I’m talking about.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
kinda surprised to see Eyre in there
May 17th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
good inning. Still got Ibanez, Howard and Werth next inning. Speaking of someone earning a right to have an off day Ibanez. He was hitting like .576 in Nats park before today, with at least 1 hit every game. Hopefully he continues that streak, but the guy has been a beat, he earned the right to only get a walk.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
Just a side note here but if we hold this lead then 3 of our wins in this series will be from J.A. Happ, Andrew Carpenter, and Sergio Escalona. That would be something.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Kennedy the reason we pulled Stairs in favor of Bruntlett was for match ups. Granted Stairs is now done for the game but originally the Nationals brought in a righty so Charlie went with a lefty in Stairs, then the Nats pulled the righty in favor a lefty and so Charlie in kind pulled Stairs for a righty in Bruntlett. Baseball is very much a chess match some times. Fortunately it worked out this time.
Not sure why Eyre is in there when its normally Madson’s spot in the 8th. Either Madson is unavailable or Eyre just does well against the three guys due up.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
I wonder if they’re saving Madson for the 9th inning?
May 17th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Eyre did the job, go Phils
May 17th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Brian…they mentioned yesterday that Ibanez played every game last season, too. Apparently he doesn’t sit down very often. Generally Charlie sits everyone at some point but if he keeps swinging than maybe not.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
I just realized you meant off-day as in bad day at the plate, not day off. Hopefully you enjoyed the tangent though.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
3 up 3 down. Very nice! Also thanks for bringing up that Carpenter got the win yesterday. That was a debate when I signed off yesterday. Saw it on ESPN late last night.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Good stat Miles…says something about the Phillies future…not that I was overly impressed with Carpenter but honestly, if a guy making his first career start doesn’t get rocked, I consider it a positive. I can’t imagine the nerves he had last night.
When did Dunn learn how to play defense?
May 17th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Ibanez is a freak of nature. He may be getting older, for an outfielder, but with his fitness routines and using Hyperbolic chambers and stuff like that. WOW. He can hit, and makes some real nice plays. True he gives up some errors, but so far if he gives up a run, he comes back the same game, and scores them right back (knock on wood I hope I didnt jinx him)
May 17th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
gee at least Howard didnt strike out again. LOL Has he played in a game this year without at least one strike out?
May 17th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Ah Ed, I understand Lefty Righty matchups fine, I also understand that Stairs is a better hitter than Bruntlett by far, no matter who’s pitching.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Lidge time
May 17th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Still looking for consistency from the start rotation. I think you go through the rotation once more and if you are not putting up solid numbers then its time to make a move like in Moyer, Blanton, and Parks situation. We have Happ, Kendrick (Iknow he was pain last year but he still found a way to win 20 some games in 2 years) Justin Lehr, give Stutes a look if need be.
I will guarentee that we will not win the east, wild card or pennant with all 3 of those in the rotation.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Damn it Ibanez!!!! 0-4….what kind of crap is that? Bring back Burrell!!!!!
Just kidding…even after going 0-4 today Ibanez still hit .500 this series!!!!
The guy is amazing. Everyone on the bandwagon yet?
May 17th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
@Brian: He’s getting a lot less strikeouts this year than last year, and his batting average is a whole lot better too.
May 17th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
wow, charlie must not have much faith in lidge anymore…
May 17th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
oo Eyre
May 17th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Ed, screw .500 this series, he is like .550 this YEAR at Nats park. LOL. Tracy, wasnt sure of that stuff. I know his defense is FAR better then it used to be, he doesnt seem as strong at the plate.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
true, maybe they are going to place lidge on the DL or something. I heard rumor of ailing Knee.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Ahh Kennedy clearly you don’t understand matchups. If you did, you know would know that Bruntlett is a 270 hitter in his career vs Lefties and Stairs is a 250 hitter vs Lefties…that 20 points is a big difference. In the last 3 years Stairs has 900 AB’s vs Righties and 125 vs Lefties…clearly he can’t hit lefties.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
1 down 2 to go!
May 17th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
I like the move of keeping Eyre in and you bring in Lidge maybe for the last batter to get an easy save….. builds confience and you play the odds with the lefty lefty match up. Manual finally made a good move:)
May 17th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
I think Lidge is fine, health wise…Charlie again went with matchups…two lefties to start the inning. I bet Lidge comes in when Willingham comes up.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Tracey is probably referring to his stats at this point in the season so far, which are much better from a batting average stand point.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
k let’s end it right here with a DP
May 17th, 2009 at 5:04 pm
I totally agree Jeff. Even though Eyre walked Harris, Chollie made the right move there.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
good call Ed.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Barf… Barfay!
May 17th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Ed brings up a good point, who would be the first to day Rauuuuuuul should go for his 0 for 4? LOL
May 17th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
Ed,
Yeah I agree, he has always been a headcase you solve that by putting him in situations where he is in the absolute best chance of winning, problem is Charlie doesn’t always make moves based on his players psyche
May 17th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
I am quite nervous about this game now
May 17th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
Thanks Brian. Wasn’t any great prognosticating on my part…just figured with Lidge still warming up that he was going to be used. Let’s hope he builds off of yesterday’s scoreless save.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
If Lidge’s slider is on it is deadly to righties.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
I got my DP
May 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
WOO HOOO!!!!!!
May 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
Thank you PHL17 for the reverse jinx! Double play baby! WOOOOHOOOOO!!!
May 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
I love when they show the 0-12 double play opportunity graph and he gets a double play. Love it!!
May 17th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
Yeah, they need to bring Happ into the starting rotation. We’ve got one starting pitcher with an ERA in the high 6’s, one with an ERA in the 7s and one with an ERA of over 8.
Hell, bring Kendrick back. Even during the second half of the 2008 season, he kept his era under 8.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
DP great finish, Lidge does what he does best
May 17th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
I got a fever and the only prescription is more 4 game sets with the Nationals!!!
WAY GO TO BOYS!!!
May 17th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
WAY TO LIGHTS OUT LIDGE. That should help his confidence.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
WHEW, Go #54
May 17th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Will Chan Ho be allowed to take Amtrak back or will he have to walk home??
May 17th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
oops I meant way to GO
May 17th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
I think Chan Ho will use a Rickshaw.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
For the most part Kendrick found ways to win, frustrating but found ways, We are on the verge of loading our rotation some great young talent, The FO want the old heads like Park, Moyer to hold on, til they are ready. And I know some think Happ is this or that, but I don’t think the FO thinks Happ is going to be much more than a 5th spot, or they would make sure he is in there over this mess
May 17th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
7 – 2 vs Nationals
13 – 14 vs everyone else
more Nationals games please, LOL
May 17th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
20 wins. 1 game back, could be 1.5 of .5 games by the end of the night. (to bad the Giants bullpen is about as good as the Nats bullpen.)
May 17th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
KK found ways to win in 2007 and the 1st half of 2008. 2nd half of 2008 and he was eaton or chan ho. kk can stay in AAA forever.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Inconsistency KILLS. Not sure how we can beat the Cards the way we did, then lose some of the other games the way we have.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
right ed, chan ho definetly wont be on the acela home. maybe they go right to cinci and he can walk to ohio.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
cottage cheese trade!
May 17th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Even bad KK wasn’t much worse than what they have right now. And I’m half convinced that the only reason Happ isn’t in the rotation right now is because they can’t figure out who to replace first- Park, Blanton or Moyer.
May 17th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Jeff- I agree that Happ may not end up being more than a serviceable 4th or 5th starter….but at this point, thats better than anything Park is giving us!
May 17th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
How sweep it is.
May 17th, 2009 at 8:33 pm
moyer and blanton i have faith in, blanton more than moyer…cause blanton pitched very well in the postseason. if he needs to work some kinks out i understand. but moyer was pretty shady during the postseason, and even his wins this year haven’t been great stuff for him…but again, i have faith in him. but park flat out NEEDS TO GO. happ or kendrick to replace, i’m thinking happ like most of you just because his stuff has been proven so far this year.
happ to replace park, in a perfect world. but manuel’s said he will still have lidge as a closer cause he believes in him, that was before friday when he blew the two run lead in the ninth, so who knows whats gonna happen.
May 18th, 2009 at 1:13 am
Let’s start with Happ replacing Park and not firing anyone yet. See how that works…
May 18th, 2009 at 7:15 am
There is no way that the phillies send Park out to start again. Charlie is a players manager, but comeon this guy is terrible, use him in long relief in blow out games.
