Bring on them Dodgers! It’s a rematch of the National League Championship Series, as the Los Angeles nine head into Philadelphia to take on the Phils.

This version of the Dodgers is a slight different, thanks to the 50-game suspension of Manny Ramirez for breaking Major League Baseball’s drug policy. Instead, they’ll have Juan Pierre in the outfield, and already he’s tearing the cover off the ball as a starter. He’s hitting .426 with three steals and nine runs scored. Yes, with about a third of the at bats, Juan Pierre is completely outplaying Jimmy Rollins.

The Dodgers will pitch Clayton Kershaw, who threw just two innings against the Phillies in last season’s LCS. The Phils will counter with Chan Ho Park, who has barely threw against the current Dodgers. Of course, he spent the beginning of his American career with Los Angeles.

By the way, those records are correct: Only early in a season will you find a team opposing another that’s seven ahead in the win column but three ahead in the loss column. Odd.

Your gamenight beer: It’s been a long trail so far for the Phillies. You know where I’m going with this: Long Trail Ale. This Vermont ale is easy to find here in the Northeast. It’s a simple ale, nothing too distinguishable about it. It’s light but has a weirdly bold taste. A tad bitter, but mainly drinkable for a few. I could eat some ravioli with this.

Go Phillies!

  1. Miles Says:

This is another real test of this team’s guts. After a tough weekend and a lineup makeover we have to go out and face arguably the best team in the NL with our worst starting pitcher. Let’s see if we are up to the the challenge….

  2. Keith Says:

    let’s go Park!

  3. Mike Says:

and a double to start it off…go parks

  4. Mike Says:

and the runs begin. chan ho park is a jokeeeeeeeee

  5. Keith Says:

    hmm, long night perhaps

  6. Griffin Says:

Ugh, Park stinks. The Dodgers hit a lot of balls hard in that inning.

  7. Miles Says:

Yeah terrible start. Even though we got the out on the rundown Werth knows he has to hit the cut there. Unfortunate seeing eye RBI single but the other two balls were killed so can’t feel bad for Park. He looks like he’s not trying doesn’t he? Either his mechanics are flawed or he just doesn’t have what it takes.

  8. Keith Says:

alright Victorino, can we get a steal?

  9. Miles Says:

Taking notes Jimmy? Nice GROUND BALL single to start us off Shane

  10. kt Says:

anyone know if madson is pitching in tonights game???
he hasn’t been in any recent games..so im assuming he may be

  11. NEPA Says:

kt – Who knows. Madson is a setup guy, so it’s going to depend on how the game unfolds.

  12. Miles Says:

Stump the fans answer would be Larry Bowa I believe…its gotta be since they always tie in the opposing team

  13. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I like the batting order tonight, if we can get some sort of hitting going

  14. Keith Says:

    who is Smiley and Edie?

  15. Keith Says:

    are*

    nice bunt Park

  16. Miles Says:

We gotta turn that freaking DP…I know it would have been a tough play but those are the things that are starting to lose us games. On the bright side, nice patience by the bottom of the lineup that got us a run. Maybe the top/middle of the lineup will go to the plate with a similar strategy.

  17. Matt Says:

Park has shown signs of getting hitters in the back end of the lineup out.
    That’s about it.
Oh, and Jimmy Rollins’s AB looked half-hearted, and just a summary of his season’s AB’s so far. For how disgruntled he looks, he sure isn’t backing up his desire to be a leadoff with his first AB so far.

  18. Matt Says:

    BUNT

  19. Matt Says:

    That works also.

  20. Keith Says:

stolen bases and a Rollins hit & RBI! woo

  21. Johnny Snowden Says:

Yeah, it’s nice to see him get a single

  22. Matt Says:

    RAUUUUUUULLLLLL

  23. Keith Says:

    RAUUUUUUULLL, 4-2 Phillies

  24. Johnny Snowden Says:

woah raaauulll. and still nobody out *knocks on wood*

  25. Mike Says:

chase i love ya but your killing us tonight

  26. Johnny Snowden Says:

aparently, the dodgers dont have to beat the throw to first tonight.

  27. Miles Says:

Do they really need to tell me that its been 37 appearances since Park won a game? The answer is no.

  28. cxl72 Says:

park putting together another good start. he still scares me.

  29. Dave Says:

I’d like to point out that as of right now, Chan ho Park has the second-lowest ERA on the starting staff.

  30. Dave Says:

Which is really sad, in case anyone missed my point.

  31. cxl72 Says:

Good point Dave. Chan Ho is at 6.00 which is GREAT when you’re a Phillies starter.

In other news David Wright thrown out at the plate, top of the 8th 2-0 Braves!!

  32. cxl72 Says:

7/23/06, the last date pedro feliz had 3 walks in a game. he has done that 3 times.

he has never had 4 walks in a game.

cmon dobbs. youre better than that.

  33. Johnny Snowden Says:

yeah cx i saw that play… that was a helluva throw.

  34. Matt Says:

    Greg Dobbs, come on, really?
    A pop-up to third base?

    That’s just plain awful

  35. Miles Says:

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that it has probably been a while since Pete Happy walked three times in a game.

On a brutal note, Dobbs continues to come up small so far this year.

I know he hasn’t got a lot of at bats but we need him to come through in spots like that, especially when we pull Park (tonight) or Myers (Sunday) in close games when they were pitching well. Frustrating.

  36. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

I told ya Saturday, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Now it looks like we are back even again and tied for first essentially.

  37. Matt Says:

Yeah, but Cairo is just as bad, if not worse. I miss Jenkins.

  38. Holly Says:

    Braves just scored 3-0 braves

  39. Johnny Snowden Says:

Braves up 3 – 0 over the mets in the 8th with a McCann rbi 2B off putz.

  40. Holly Says:

    Bases loaded for the Braves.

  41. cxl72 Says:

I’m aok turning games over to the pen. Park has an ERA of 6.00 and sending him out there in the 7th is russian roulette.

I know that the pen blew the game on Sunday but that was terrible Tashner. I love Charlie but I think he is a stubborn and needs to see a guy fail over and over before he reliazes he’s terrible.

Come back soon JC, all is forgiven.

  42. Johnny Snowden Says:

i love how we just said that at the same time

  43. Johnny Snowden Says:

yeah cx … only 21 games left.

  44. cxl72 Says:

That was a hell of a Throw Johnny S, lets go Braves!

When I figure out the Phillies inconsistent offense I will then solve the Mets inconsistent offense and exploit it, go to Vegas and become a millionaire then solve the Middle East and end world hunger.

    These teams are enigma’s I tell ya….

  45. Holly Says:

haha yeah, i’m watching the mets game and relying on philliesnation.com for Phillies updates.

  46. Holly Says:

mets score 2 reyes out at 3rd being greedy

  47. Keith Says:

Marlins up 3-2 in the 4th inning

  48. Holly Says:

come on braves! i hate them both but the mets more!

  49. Johnny Snowden Says:

man, o-man does not want to pitch

  50. Geoff Says:

Another good start from Park…wonder what got into him?

  51. Geoff Says:

now its Moyer whos on the hot seat.

  52. Holly Says:

inning over – sheffield grounds out to 1st. top of 9th come on braves get some insurance

  53. Keith Says:

WERTH, stole home! 4 stolen bases wow.

  54. Johnny Snowden Says:

    Werth!!!

  55. Tracey Says:

    WHOA!!!

  56. Dave Says:

    Werth!!!

  57. Tracey Says:

Stealing home: Unnecessary (because of the bases loaded walk) but still very cool.

  58. Miles Says:

I may have just developed a serious mancrush on Jayson Werth.

  59. Hotstove Says:

wow thats the coolest thing in baseball the steal of home.

  60. shag beta sigma delta Says:

really 4 walks to pete happy in one game awesome

  61. cxl72 Says:

What a great play by Werth. A nice insurance run.

  62. Geoff Says:

WOW. please make him the leadoff hitter.

  63. Matt Says:

I didn’t see the play, was it a true steal of home, or was the ball in the dirt?

  64. shag beta sigma delta Says:

ok tell me madson is coming in to pitch two innings

  65. Geoff Says:

true steal…caught russell martin napping. right handed hitter at the plate so he was screened too

  66. Geoff Says:

he stole second third and home

  67. Matt Says:

So basically was it when Russell was returning the ball to the pitcher?

  68. Holly Says:

    thanks for the updates guys!

  69. FillyP Says:

Matt – he had a walking lead and timed it just as the catcher threw the ball back to the mound.

Great to see them playing with energy tonight. Let’s finish strong. Let’s go Fightin’ Phils!!

I’ll be at the game tomorrow night in the bleachers; can’t wait!

  70. Mike Says:

what a play by jason. great timing. we left alot of players on the pond toinight.

  71. shag beta sigma delta Says:

when is it not a true steal of home, what are you going to have, defensive indifference, if it is a passed ball or wild pitch it is an error not a stolen base

  72. Holly Says:

damn mets leadoff double bottome of 9th no outs!

  73. Mike Says:

mets had beltran steal third and tied it up on a sacrifice…

  74. shag beta sigma delta Says:

any chance we leave Lidge in the pen tonight, and let madson pitch 2

  75. Dave Says:

BTW, who thinks that Madson might be the closer of the future? The guy’s been great this year.

  76. shag beta sigma delta Says:

or since it is a save situation, bring Lidge in and see if he can finnish this off, and not just go out and throw pitches with a 5 run lead

  77. Miles Says:

HA! Perfect end to the Mets game! Tatis gets picked off…game set match.

  78. Miles Says:

    Damn they tied it.

  79. Holly Says:

    ugh, mets tie game

  80. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Yes, it could be a wetland, rivera, situation, where the set up guy becomes better then the closer he set up for, how old was Wetland anyway when the Yankees let him go

  81. Holly Says:

did you see that robbery at 3rd – beltran was out!

  82. Holly Says:

hey you called it tatis out! one batter too late!

  83. Johnny Snowden Says:

    davidson is retarded.

  84. shag beta sigma delta Says:

what is the on field delay

  85. shag beta sigma delta Says:

ok Lidge, Save situation, and we could really use a win here so focus and do your job, I know you can.
that is kinda of funny considering my last few posts

  86. Johnny Snowden Says:

    okay breathholding starts nonw

  87. Evan Says:

Man I love Jayson Werth. He’s got a cannon of an arm, can hit for power, and is fantastic on the basepaths. I swear he never gets caught stealing.

  88. shag beta sigma delta Says:

first pitch strikes and about 93 94 Iam liking this except for the single pitching ok on MLB.com

  89. Keith Says:

    come on Lidge

  90. Mike Says:

lidge does not look dominate this year.

  91. shag beta sigma delta Says:

ok I am going to shut up now two hits in a row come on Brad BARE DOWN AND GET THE DAM OUT

  92. CT Says:

it might be time to put boras’s claim about madson being the next mariano rivera to the test. i’m not sure if lidge can really hold onto this closer job anymore.

  93. Geoff Says:

dude hes so wild…what the hell…just hit the mark. hes afraid of throwing his fastball

  94. Keith Says:

    yay Phillies win :D

  95. Geoff Says:

whew…maybe this will get lidge going getting out of that jam…

  96. Diane Says:

    Thank goodness, Victorino!!!!!!!

  97. Johnny Snowden Says:

    victorino deserves that save.

  98. Matt Says:

Jeez, you guys are hammering Lidge.
He’s not what he was last year, but granted he had quite a few saves similar to the one tonight.
Let the man do his thing and stop hounding him, he’ll be fine

  99. shag beta sigma delta Says:

He did his job tonight, Like I said last week, I don’t remember too many 1 2 3 innings from him last year either, but when he bares down he is still up there with the best of them

  100. Mike Says:

Mets have baby latino showoff on second….

  101. Evan Says:

Lidge had a crapload of shaky saves last year. He’s not a 3 and done guy. He’s got nasty pitches and he can hold under pressure. The only thing that matters is that he got the save.

  102. Caleb Says:

I don’t care if it was only one run, it seems like lidge is giving up a run every relief appearance, this worries me. Did bring him back to his houston years?

  103. Mike Says:

bases loaded mets with two outs. hey another latino to the plate. carlos i dont slide and make to much money beltran…

  104. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Hey I am not bashing the guy, I think sometimes he just needs to bare down and do his job, and I think Chooch can do that for him, remind him of the job he has to do, I’ll go home and watch it on DVR and then I will have more to say

  105. shag beta sigma delta Says:

what game are you watching caleb, he gave up no runs tonight

  106. Johnny Snowden Says:

i dunno … just looking at his numbers and comparing from last year … at this point last season his era was under one. its now over 8. shaky or not, that a lot more runs

  107. Mike Says:

Mets win on a bases loaded walk.

  108. Evan Says:

What game are you watching Shag, he gave up a run with a bloop single when runners were on first and second.

  109. ali Says:

somebody find the clip of werth stealing home and post it! I walked away for ten minutes and missed it!

  110. Evan Says:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd8uF3W4l3g

Poor quality, but its the best you’ll get till the highlight is posted.

  111. Ryan S Says:

Is there a video anywhere of Werth stealing home?

  112. Dave Says:

Last year, Lidge had an ERA of under 2. This year, it’s over 9. I don’t blame everyone for panicing. He’s making Jack Taschner look like Mariano Rivera.

  113. Georgie Says:

….And Werth wins a case of shamwows for stealing home.

  114. Brian of CO Says:

Again, Rollins gets a hit, and the Phillies win when he is NOT batting first. Who cares if he “like batting first” if he cant hit the ball when batting first, but actually gets a hit when he isnt. Freakin Braves gives up a bases loaded walk. IDIOTS. Im glad to get a win, but until we can consistently beat NL East teams (besides the sweep of the Marlins) we wont win the division this year. Still lots of baseball left, hopefully this first month is our only slump.

  115. Brian of CO Says:

Last year Lidge also only gave up 2 HR’s in the entire year. This year already like 5 or 6.

  116. ali Says:

    Thanks Evan : )

  117. Phil Says:

I was thinking earlier today when reading that thread about Rollins about how Werth or Utley should bat lead off. There are 2 downfalls to either of them. If Werth batted lead off it would hurt the lefty/righty splits and if Utley batted lead off it would give him less opportunities to drive in runners. Both of them are on base machines with speed(Werth more so). They also take a lot of pitches so the rest of the team can see what the opposing pitcher has. Victorino is not the answer. His OBP is sad and he is constantly swinging at the 1st or 2nd pitch like Rollins. His OBP is like .320ish last I looked. Werth and Utley are around .400. I’m too lazy to look up the exact number. I think a line up of Utley, Werth, Ibanez, Howard, Feliz, Victorino, Rollins, Ruiz/Coste right now would be really good. It would break up the lefties pretty well and give the hot bat of Feliz more opportunities to drive in runs. I’m not saying this should be the permanent line up or anything, but why not have your 3 on base machines batting in front of Howard? What are your thoughts?

  118. Johnny Snowden Says:

that’s exactly what I was sayin dave. I mean yeah, Lidge “did his job” and job the save and I’m totally stoked we won tonight, but he is a remarkably different pitcher from last season. I mean, his ERA was 0.50 on this date last season … AND last season, gives up 2 home runs in more than 69 innings. in 13 innings thus far he’s given up 5.

  119. Caleb Says:

Oh, my bad. I heard the announcer say “and Loney will score!” and I assumed lidge gave up the run.

  120. Johnny Snowden Says:

by job the save i meant got the save hahah

  121. Phil Says:

  122. Phil Says:

Was I banned from the site?

  123. Shitarino Says:

wow you guys seem to be more worried about the mets than your own team.

“HA! Perfect end to the Mets game! Tatis gets picked off…game set match.”

Sorry buddy but the Mets won…nice try though.

I dont get why you guys continue to bash latino players on this blog. It just makes you sound arrogant as hell. All MLB teams have latin players even the philthies.

  124. Phil Says:

It won’t let me post under my old email. I was trying to say this:

I was thinking earlier today when reading that thread about Rollins about how Werth or Utley should bat lead off. There are 2 downfalls to either of them. If Werth batted lead off it would hurt the lefty/righty splits and if Utley batted lead off it would give him less opportunities to drive in runners. 125. Johnny Snowden Says:

    hi phil

  126. Phil Says:

Hi Johnny. I think my old email was banned from this site…maybe for being anti-racist.

  127. FillyP Says:

Shitarino – you’re the one that’s on OUR blog, monitoring our comments. Aren’t you contradicting yourself a bit?

But I will agree with you on one thing – the comments on Spanish/Latino players is totally unnecessary. Who cares about ethnicities? I don’t agree with it, and I don’t think it shows a lot of class/intelligence on behalf of Phils fans. So to those who have a hang up on Latino players – shut up and keep it to yourself. Thanks.

  128. Phil Says:

I agree 100% FillyP. Some of the best players in baseball are of Latin decent. Pujols IS the best player in baseball and he’s Hispanic. Pedro Martinez was probably the 2nd best pitcher of our generation and he’s latino. I could go on forever. They make the game better. Baseball wouldn’t be nearly as exciting if all of these talented players weren’t in the game.

  129. cxl72 Says:

I can get used to Rollins hitting lower in the lineup, Breaks up the lefties and gets him some nice protection. Rollins was killing the ball tonight, just to the 3b.

  130. Phil Says:

Yeah cxl…he was hitting the ball hard just at people. It’s a good sign that he’s coming around. I think he might do better batting behind the games best home run hitter and in front of one of the hottest bats in the NL.

  131. cxl72 Says:

What’s our record with anyone else but rollins batting leadoff? I have think its around 3-0. Where is my computer when I need it??

  132. cxl72 Says:

What’s our record with anyone else but rollins batting leadoff I have think its around 3-0. Where is my computer when I need it

  133. Brian of CO Says:

Well the people saying the Latino things I would say are the minority. Most of us dont care about Ethnicity, however FillyP is correct, shitarino is a hypocrit, not only because he is monitoring what Phillies Phans are saying on a STRICTLY Phillies blog, but also because he had problems with “Latino Baby” comment, and has a screen name of Shitarino, obviously derived from Victorino. DUH Hypocrit.

  134. Brian of CO Says:

cxl72, I believe it is 3-0, but if not I am sure it is close to that, and undefeated.

  135. FillyP Says:

Um, Brian – I’m pretty sure Shane is Hawaiian ….
