Gamenight: Braves (13-15) At Phillies (14-12)

Atlanta Braves (13-15) at Philadelphia Phillies (14-12)
Jo-Jo Reyes (0-1, 5.00 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (0-2, 7.27 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Cloudy, 74
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Hopefully there’s no lightning, or black cats, or ladders in tonight’s forecast. Cole Hamels takes the hill once again, trying to come back from ridiculous injury spurred on by some in-game happenstance. This time he’ll take on the Braves, a team he hasn’t faced yet this season.
Hamels has ruled the Braves. The only hitter with real success is, of course, Chipper Jones (.333, 2 HR). Okay, Casey Kotchman, too (.444, 3 HR). Hamels, who is coming off an ankle injury, is still searching for that first win.
The Braves counter with Jo-Jo Reyes, who the Phillies have bashed (18 R in 23 IP) throughout his career. Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Chris Coste and Carlos Ruiz all have listed Reyes in their books.
Your gamenight beer: Yeah man. Here’s Dogfish 90 Minute IPA. I’m getting the Dogfish beers out of the way early, mainly cause I want you to appreciate them in as much time as possible. The 90 Minute is a sterling beer, flavorful and not overly strong in taste. But it hits you, and it hits you hard. It’s 9 percent, so it gets you good after a few. Drink with caution. And eat some mussels with it.
Go Phillies!

May 8th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
hopefully tonight will be a good night for hamels…no freak accidents!
May 8th, 2009 at 6:30 pm
Good thing Lannan’s not playing in this one
May 8th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
They call it 90 minutes cuz that’s how long it takes to finish one…that stuff is serious.
May 8th, 2009 at 6:50 pm
Go Phillies!
May 8th, 2009 at 7:07 pm
Why the F is Coste catching?!?!?!? The starters do much better with Ruiz behind the plate!
May 8th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
good start Cole.
May 8th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Hamels just hit 94….
May 8th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
I like how he’s pitching.. getting ahead in the count and then some relatively easy outs
May 8th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
Hamels is hitting 93 consistently with his fastball. Four straight fastballs to Franceour, all at 93. Good sign.
May 8th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
An interesting link on Jeff Francoeur, who is allergic to taking a pitch: http://www.faniq.com/blog/Jeff-Francoeur-Doesnt-Know-Anything-About-On-Base-Percentage-Blog-23440
May 8th, 2009 at 7:35 pm

Cole was running FAST
May 8th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Keep it rolling let Cole have a gigantic lead so he can relax and have a great night!!!
May 8th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
I read an article the other day about the most impatient hitters in baseball over the last few years and the top five were all starting pitchers. Carlos Zambrano was #1, but #2 was our boy Cole and he proved it by swinging at that 2-0 pitch!
May 8th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Welcome back, Jimmy.
May 8th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
So far, so good-Cole is looking good and J-Roll with a big hit.
May 8th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
Hamels is on fireeeee
May 8th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
so if we include Hamel’s last start, he’s on a nice little roll: 7.1 IP / 4 H / 0 ER / 9 K
May 8th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Nice double by Howard
May 8th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
WERTH IS ON FIRE TOO!!!!!!!!!

May 8th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Hamels is pissed
May 8th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
thankfully good ol’ Francoeur pops up the first pitch
May 8th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
That is the one thing that has got to be frustrating he pitches lights out for several innings at a time them gives up dip and dunk innings like this.
May 8th, 2009 at 8:08 pm

May 8th, 2009 at 8:30 pm

Utley: 9
Ibanez: 8

Werth: 6
May 8th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
I hate how we never get to see the idiots who run onto the field.
May 8th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Top of 5th: Omar Infante grounds out, Yunel Escobar walks, C Jones with a full count and he walks. Two straight walks by Hamels his first 2 of the games. Braves threatening. 1st and 2nd 1out. G Anderson up.
May 8th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
Hamels will get a DP
May 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
ooooohhhhh Almost
May 8th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
almost Manny, almost
May 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Yes Cole!
May 8th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Hamels is back! great game.
May 8th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
Hamels was the stopper tonight. Great game by cole. They stretched him out at 90 plus pitches. Offense did there job. Mets are tied now. Going to tomorrows game.
May 8th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
I agree Mike!! Id love to see that too. Last year I was at a game during a rain delay and this dude ran out on to the field and started sliding on the tarp like it was a splish-n-splash, and then he dove into the tarp tube and hid when the fuzz came after him. It was funny as hell. Anyways, I wish they would show those idiots!
May 8th, 2009 at 8:48 pm
if cole can get himself pitching like this and stay healty. i think the rest will follow..
May 8th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
7 Ks for Hamels…not bad, not bad….
May 8th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Hamels stepped up and pitched like an ace! Great outing!
May 8th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
This is so much better without all the trolls from the last 2 nights…. aaaahhhh
May 8th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
lol much better
May 8th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
I agree with Mike and Mickey! I know they never show the peeps that run out on the field, as they try and deter other people from doing it, but sometimes it’s just funny! You could see the players cracking up! I want to see what they are laughing at!!
May 8th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
I read a good article in the Daily News. Dave Murphy wrote, Our Staters have been bad, games were the offense hasnt shown up, lost two to the mets this week, lost cole a few times, but still in first.
May 8th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
is this the end of Vic’s hitting streaK?
May 8th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
Manny, yes. Much better.
And Diane and Mickey, I was at Jim Thome’s 400th homerun. And if anybody remembers that game, there was close to 3 or 4 hours of rain delays. And lots of people ran onto the field during that. But I remember there was a young couple who ran into the bush patch or whatever in center field and the guy got down on one knee and proposed. Then they were arrested. Don’t know if it was fake, but the crowd booed for arresting them since he proposed and she said yes.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
SJ Mike, thats awesome!!!!
May 8th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
pirates 2-2 with men on first and second. beat the mets…
May 8th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
alright Feliz!
May 8th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Feliz!
May 8th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
I hope they walk Coste and let Stairs bat with bases loaded!
May 8th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
When werth got hit all I could think of is mt is coming up.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Dobbs? But I want Matt Stairs
May 8th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
Lets hope Dobbs can get his swing back
May 8th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
Watching this game I Just keep thinking, either peavy or halladay and we would be as good as anyone in baseball. we would match up with redsoxs and any other team. The cubs got freel for nothing, a good addition. That’s a team that scares me. them and boston
May 8th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
Good job Dobbs! Good to see him get an RBI
May 8th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
nice Dobbs.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
dobbs is back? I hope so
May 8th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
SJ Mike, that’s an awesome story! I think the arrest is worth it, if you can tell the story that you got engaged on the field of the Philadelphia Phillies! I mean, how long would you be in jail, anyway?? Heehee!
May 8th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
That is a cool story, SJ Mike.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Oh cmon Lidge!!
May 8th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
I mean, those two could’ve been just acting and faking it for all I know. I was standing near the first base dugout and it was on the opposite side of the stadium. But it was funny.
There also was a full blown naked man who started doing belly slides on the tarp before he got wrapped up and arrested also. A lot of people ran onto the field during that rain delay. Kind of amusing seeing the ballpark staffers chase after a naked man in pouring rain on slippery tarp.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Wow Lidge you blow….
Get him out of there.. and put Madson in.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
come on Lidge.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
What the heck is up with Brad Lidge???
May 8th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
Lidge never pitches well in these non-save situations.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
i know lidge was great last year but madson is the man. i hate putting your closer in these blow outs..
May 8th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
SJ Mike…it’s always funny, watching ballpark staffers chase after naked people! Of course, they don’t really want to have to tackle naked people, cause it’s just gross…so it’s quite entertaining
May 8th, 2009 at 9:33 pm
Just when you think this was gonna be a really nice game, with nothing to worry about, Lidge comes in and reminds us how bad he has been this season.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
yeah he has to find is groove. He hasnt been close to “lights out” lidge we saw last year
May 8th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Well, at least he has this inning to find his groove, Fran… Lets just hope he doesn’t let anyone else on base.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
He has been Light Up Lidge. I am sure he will eventually get his stuff together but if not he is under contract for two more years.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
Unfortunately, Lidge is wayyyy far from “Lights Out” this year!
May 8th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
He pitched A LOT better after that HR
May 8th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
Good to see Cole get his first W… 19 more to go!
May 8th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
show boating spicccccccccc on first …
May 8th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Mike you are a fn retard…you sound arrogant just like that moron last night…
May 8th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Man, why does Lidge have to mess up my fantasy era even more?
Oh well, at least the Phillies exit with the win here.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Mike, I dislike Reyes as much as the next, but please refrain from the derogatory comments like that. Show some class. Don’t be like a Mets fan.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
I’m on the edge of the ledge with Lidge this year. I hope he is healthy or getting healthy. He is too important to this team.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
3-2 mets…. 0 outs …..runners on 1B and 2B
May 8th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Lidge did the same kind of stuff last year. He’d come in non save situations just to get work and give up a slew of runs. Happened a couple times I remember, so I’m not as worried.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
I would just like to know since I have not watched this game yet it is on DVR for when I get out of work, Why not bring Hammels back out for the 7th, only 95 pitches, is it because he skipped a couple of starts, why not give the guys in the pen a rest, and let him get into the 8 or maybe God forbid pitch a complete game
May 8th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Shag, Hamels hasn’t gotten enough chances to really get stretched out yet. He’s behind the curve in terms of preparation for everyone. So going into the 7th might have been too much for him at this point.
May 8th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
6-2
May 8th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
I’m just worried that he’s still shaken up from that first BS. I’m sure he realizes everyone blows saves, but I think it might have deterred his drive and confidence a little.
May 8th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Good win tonight, Lidge poor showing does not bother me like some stated earlier, he had outings like this in non save situations last year, and I really do not remember how many 1 2 3 9th innings he had either, if my memory serves me right, I thought he made a lot of saves interesting.
But I regress, good win for the Phils, lets do it again tomorrow, and start another winning streak
May 8th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Great game, except for Lidge at the end. I hope his knee isn’t bothering him. I’m going to my first game of the year tomorrow, come on Blanton!
May 8th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Can lidge come back and pitch tomorrow?
May 8th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
Lidge….not too sharp….maybe still hurtin or just not that good…..and whats with Tmac the guy hits a homer off the Lidgeman and he says ….wow that would have been an out in other stadiums….and what he said about Citifield its too big no homers in this place….Howard made it look kinda small with the BLAST last night….the guy has an excuse for everything ….I wonder if he’s dating Andy Reid …as for Moyer he throws nothing but slop…and want s the calls…..not this year everyone knows the line has been drawn for him by even the best of umpires…he’s gonna have to put it over the plate….not the lines outside the batters box…he looks tired anyway…Happ it Charlie…soon….good to see Mighty Mouse get a win hope he doesn’t fall in the shower. Cole. …Cole speak to me Cole………..
