McCann, Braves Power Past Lifeless Phils
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, May 09, 2009 06:16 PM
The Phillies made Javier Vazquez look like Cy Young.
The Braves beat the Phillies, 6-2, thanks to the sterling pitching of Vazquez and the un-sterling pitching of Joe Blanton. Sure, he went eight innings and looked better than usual, but giving up six runs (no matter how you do it) won’t slice it. He allowed two-run home runs to Yunel Escobar and Brian McCann, who went 3-for-4 against Blanton. Overall, Blanton gave up six runs on eight hits in eight frames.
Meanwhile, the Phils offense played like sludge. They never worked Vazquez, allowing him to throw 115 pitches in eight innings. Only Chase Utley (2-for-4, HR, 2B) and Raul Ibanez (1-for-3, HR) did anything of note against Vazquez. Among the 0-fers were Jimmy Rollins (0-for-4), Shane Victorino (0-for-4), Ryan Howard (0-for-4) and Greg Dobbs (0-for-3).
Scott Eyre pitched a scoreless ninth. At least Blanton gave the bullpen a rest.
With the loss, the Phillies now sit in second place in the NL East, behind the division-leading Mets.

LETS GO METS FIRST PLACE BABY WOOOO HOOOO LETS GO METSIES
May 9th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Get a life.
May 9th, 2009 at 7:02 pm
he would just waste it if he got one
May 9th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
I was at the game today. Sitting one row behind Werth. I asked him how his knee was and he said not good. I said are you going to play sunday and he gave me a grin. I think he will be on the 15 day. He was limping. His swing was off. Also is Charlie going to pull Blanton at some point. You give a double to the pitcher and all hell breaks lose. They are in trouble with this pitching.
May 9th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
After being at 12 regular season games last year and seeing the Phils go 1-11 (with the one win being the NL East clincher) the Phils lose again at a game in which I attend. Vazquez was filthy. Let’s win tomorrow.
May 9th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
wow, Griffin that’s terrible.
I’m going to the game tomorrow, go Phillies!
May 9th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Keep your heads up……….its a marathon,not a sprint.Its still May.
May 9th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
BUUUUUUUUUUUUT,First place does feel great.
May 9th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
I was there today too..my thoughts: well, at least I got some good sun today. Blanton was below average. He ate up 8 innings but gave up a miserable 6 runs with two bad decisions that ended up in the bleachers. The starting pitching simply cannot continue like this. Moyer needs to know theres no shame in retiring now, theres only shame in hanging on too long like he is doing. Blanton has to tighten up, and so does Myers…
Im sick of seeing this, Blanton won 16 games and was steady a few years ago and last year he had a good run. JA Happ needs a start now, and I dont care which of these struggling guys it is in place of…
Also, the lineup was really baffled todya by Vazquez, not sure why, but he was really working his stuff.
May 9th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
I honestly don’t know which is more frustrating at this point….Jimmy…or the starting pitching. I know most would jump to the starting pitching, but setting the table the way Jimmy should actually sets the tone for the lineup as well as the starting pitching. Pitching with a lead is different than pitching from behind.
May 9th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
Vazquez did toss a good game, but I’ve noticed this about the Phils: whenever they aren’t blasting balls into the bleachers, they look like the most offensively anemic team of all time. Surely, they did hit two bombs today – but with no one on base. The Mets strung together hits today to win. The Braves did the same. The Phils need to go up there with short, crisp swings geared to hitting ‘em where they ain’t – and that don’t necessarily mean the cheap seats.
Blanton struggled but did throw some good pitches. This team needs to watch its starters, however. Happ belongs in the rotation, and the brass should be unafraid of trading players to get the pitching it needs.
May 9th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Tim sucks, He can never give it to the other team. He says the Phils MADE Vasquez look like cy young. No he made the Phillies look retarded. And as for being upset at Met fans commenting on being in first, thats what happens when Philly fans comment on being in first place 10 games into the season like some were here.
May 9th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Thank you Baseballfan. I couldn’t say it any better.
Phillie fans can dish it, but heaven forbid they take it.
NOW TAKE IT GOOD!!!!
METS……FIRST PLACE…..
DEAL WITH IT!!!!
Yeah i know “I’m a troll”…….
May 9th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Congrats chutly on your first place May showing. It’s too bad you never had this feeling in October.
May 9th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
Remember last year the Mets strung together a few good wins and held first? Remember the trolls came out?
Remember how that worked out?
Yeah. I’m not sweating it.
Now go enjoy your new haircuts, Mets fans. You earned it.
May 9th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
Hey. Mets fan living in Philly here. Trust me, no Mets fan with half a brain should be bragging about being in 1st place, by half a game no less, this early in season given what’s happened to us the last two seasons.
May 9th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
wow can phillies fans stop referring to last year. yes i know you guys have the worst winning percentage of any franchise in regard to world series rings, so i can see why you cant move on, but this is a totally different mets ball club. for instance we now have the games best closer and set up men on our side. also mr. delgado is himself and louis castillo is back 2 normal… and our stud left fielder, Daniel Murphy is here for the entire seasonnnnn!!!!lets go metsies. What have the phillies added…. moyer another year older…. blanton just bad …… myers back 2 normal…. oh and ibanez is a good ball player but NOT that good shows how much your crap ball park inflates everyones numbers. Lets go Metsies!!!!!!!!!!!
May 9th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
Daniel Murphy your stud left fielder here for the whole season? Your skitz manager doesn’t even play him every day
It’s just sad how self conscious mets fans have become since “no edge” beltran took that called knee-buckling third strike in ‘06. Adam Wainwright anybody?
May 9th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
A bad performance, but they can’t win every game, right? I say put Happ in the starting rotation!
May 10th, 2009 at 12:10 am
Ya you gotta give happ a shot;the starting rotation is a real serious predicament. Can you imagine if they sent moyer down for awhile like they did with myers? Obviously they can’t because he has a lot more than 5 years of big league experience, but it would be kinda cool seeing someone his age pitching in triple a
May 10th, 2009 at 12:12 am
Seeing as it is now officially Mother’s Day, I’d like to officially extend my sympathies to any mother so cursed as to have had her womb polluted by a Phillies fan.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:24 am
Ya philthadelphia, I agree with you. Cursed is the mom whose womb was polluted by a world series ring. How do such women cope with such misery?
May 10th, 2009 at 12:26 am
funny how we are talking about first place an all. Its May, and as a Met fan i’m not saying a word until Oct, the phillies won the F-in WS. which basically means us met fans should just shut up.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:29 am
I wonder how mediocre Carrasco must be to still be pitching for the Pigs against the Crash Davis’ of the world. You would think if he had any shot of contributing he would be up here by now….ps….don’t worry about the Mets fans on here. Just like Jose Reyes and their new fat closer, they are all show and no substance. As long as Mr. Heimlich is still managing them, they pose no threat to us. Their whole team is like a fake plant. It looks good on the outside, but after awhile everybody knows its a tacky fraud that will never bear any fruit.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:30 am
the above postsaid, i will admit to listening to the radio broadcast of the phillies game today just to see if they’d loose.
Tom Mcarthy (i think thats his name) the guy whos on glee pills or something, its tough to take him for an entire 9 innings, nice guy an all but man what a
“homer”
May 10th, 2009 at 12:31 am
Doesnt help that he actually sounds excited when opposing teams hit homeruns.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:35 am
I just bought a house in Allentown.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:39 am
Mr. Met,
You guys have one of the best voices in the country in Gary Cohen on SNY. Does that guy have some pipes or what?
I subscribe to MLB Audio live radio. You’re right, McCarthy is a little weak, but Howie Rose is an above-average play by play guy.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:47 am
nyhater: About that world series ring in your mom’s womb, Jimy Rollins called and he’d like it back.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:58 am
I think your a little confused, that was your dad calling telling you to turn the computer off its past bedtime.
May 10th, 2009 at 12:58 am
Phith,
What’s the deal with Ollie? Does he now know which leg it was that he actually injuired? Gee (no pun intended to dillon), another one of Omar’s brilliant signings. Smart move not to pony up the couple more dollars it would’ve taken to sign Lowe.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:01 am
Isnt there a Mets board where sych things can be discussed? No disrespect to the rational Mets fans but this is a Phillies board.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:02 am
Ghjkls Says: You should handle that “passed bedtime” joke with lots of care. Its an antique…
May 10th, 2009 at 1:04 am
I like Cohen too. H.Rose is good too, but Cohen is in another league.
like I said Mcarthy is alright, but at times he’s a bit much.
to be honest the guy who burns me up is Larry Anderson. his comment about throwing one at Reyes neck was priceless, but he just complains non stop about the opposing team not just the mets either. whether its their players celebrating, or the stadium, the food at the stadium, the music, the view. it never stops. its comical, i find myself listening to him just to hear what he’s going to say next
What did you guys think of the Victorino elbowing Reyes. I respect him for it b/c it was a heads up play with winning the game in mind, but it seems like he’s always in the middle of a dirty play. i’m hoping the mets buzz him next time, not hit him, just a little “how u doin”
May 10th, 2009 at 1:04 am
Call it what you will, I go by what I see. You act like a 12 year old, now quick hurry and turn it off before daddy sees the light on.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:07 am
Mr Met,
I think it was a heads up play, that being said if it were the reverse I might be a little upset but baseball is a “contact” sport. Players are taught at all levels when in a run down to try to initaiate contact for an interference call, this is nothing new.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:07 am
It’s “past bedtime”. Your bedtime may have passed, but it’s now past your bedtime. Ignoramus.
Jesus. You must have gone to any one of New York’s piss-poor excuses for a school they label “PS”.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:08 am
Ghjkls: Sure… but where’s the fun in trash talking when everyone will just agree with you? Honestly, the way to get rid of the trash talking trolls is to simply agree with them.
The next time someone tells you the Phillies suck moose ass, say “Yes they do!” And when they say that Philadelphia IS a moose ass, say “Yes it is!” And when they say you must be a moose turd since you live in a moose ass, say “Yes I am.” I guarantee we’ll all go away….
May 10th, 2009 at 1:11 am
Ive tried telling people that in the past, if I dont respond them somebody else will……………………if you cant beat em join em……..plus its late and Im bored………………….watching World Series replays on MLB TV ha.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:12 am
Ghjkls: We have that in common.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:15 am
I refuse to beleive that, I have nothing in common with any Mets fan!!! =)
May 10th, 2009 at 1:22 am
Victorino’s play was a little bush league, but so is drilling the opposing pitcher in the back after he nailed your cleanup hitter where it hurts. Honestly, if Shane was my own son I’d probably be more than a tad upset at him. But he’s not. And as a phillies fan I love a hard-nosed player like that.
Not to bring this back to the mets, but Victorino is exactly what they need. In my estimation, its the reason why they failed the last two years and the reason why they’re destined to fail again this year.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:26 am
Phils Phan: Oh, good… thanks for the grammar lesson. Incidentally, since grammar (and I’d guess spelling) is at the pinnacle of your wit, “Passed” as used in the question, “Is it passed your bedtime?” is the past participle and so grammatically should be asked in the present perfect tense as, “Has it (meaning “time”, “the present moment” or the “clock”) passed your bedtime?” It would perhaps better be asked as “Has your bedtime passed?” again, using the present perfect tense. If referring to the person, you could ask, “Have you passed your bedtime?”
In other words, since I hadn’t used it in a sentence but in a reference which could be toward anything: SUCK IT!
May 10th, 2009 at 1:30 am
Ghjkls: Yeah… I don’t wanna have anything in common with a Phillies fan either, so I agree!!! Oh, wait… now we’re agreeing, too?!?!?
The paradox is making my head hurt….
May 10th, 2009 at 1:35 am
It’s at the pinnacle of my profession. Poor grammar does more injury than a poorly structured argument. A poorly structured argument centered on defensive ambiguity does little more than reflect a “I have jack shit to offer” strategic stance.
Nice try.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:36 am
nyhater Says: In my estimation, its the reason why they failed the last two years and the reason why they’re destined to fail again this year.
If they fail the same way (with some atrocious September collapse)…
I’d love to say something harsh… like I’ll become a Phillies fan or (far worse) a Yankees fan… but the reality is, even if there’s some stupi collapse this year, I’ll just add a new set of scars to the ones I got on my back from the last two years worth of whipping and I’ll root for them again next year…
They say that a characteristic of insanity is performing the same act time after time and expecting different results. I guess all REAL fans of a team have to be a little crazy then. We can’t win every year… but we all expect to.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:39 am
Phils Phan: Oh… so you’re a professional douchbag, then. That explains you. Good job.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:44 am
Bald insults are a poor substitute for a pointed, reasoned response, and a sign of being, as I stated above, an ignoramus.
Enjoy your new haircut, and have a good night.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:48 am
Philth,
You are right that eternal belief in one’s team is what makes a true fan, but in my opinion, it makes it all the more frustrating when a team collapses numerous times and fails in the offseason to address their issues.
Did the Mets address their bullpen? Yes, and a mighty fine job may I add.
Did the Mets address their need for an emotional leader, a player who would give that jersey off his back to win a ballgame? No.
May 10th, 2009 at 1:49 am
Phils Phan: Good night… douchebag. Hey, if its any help to you in your profession, where can I rate you? Because, as far as douchebags go, I would give you 5 stars. I’d like to point it out so its clear to everyone that, as far as douchebags go, you’re among the elite. You’re Senior Douche…. or would you prefer Senior Bag? Either way, you’re it.
May 10th, 2009 at 2:03 am
nyhater Says: Did the Mets address their need for an emotional leader, a player who would give that jersey off his back to win a ballgame? No.
Oh, yeah… I definitely agree with you (oh no! Another agreement!!!). Considering the quick exit from the playoffs in ‘06 and the collapses in ‘07 and ‘08, I’m not so sure that’s something anyone’s really ready to shoulder.
Winning could change that, though… in a hurry.
May 10th, 2009 at 2:16 am
OK lets clear this up.First of all Tom McCarthy was offered Gary Cohen’s radio gig for at least the 2006 season…….NOW when interviewed by Mike and the Mad Dog,McCarthy said he grew up a Mets fan.So if you want to call McCarthy a homer when it comes to the Phils, you better think again (As Howie Rose is a life-lomg Rangers fan he calls the Islanders TV).He got the job the 2nd time with the Phils so he can eventually take over the reins for Harry Kalas (In which NOBODY can take his spot and sadly sooner rather than later) Now I have heard Wheels,Sarge and Anderson via the XM and I’d say they do a good job.Cohen and Rose are life long Mets fans so you can tell their excitement when the Mets do right and sharp criticism when they lose. Now thats what fans do,but at least they give due props and call a crisp game (Not like over the top John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman on Yankees radio)
May 10th, 2009 at 2:34 am
Even Yankee fans admit that John Sterling, Suzyn Waldman, and Michael Kay are awful.
May 10th, 2009 at 5:01 am

Botomm line…… the Metsies are in first place! Let’s Go Livan!!!!! May 10th, 2009 at 9:28 am
The two guys in the line-up who seem to actually be thinking during the AB, Chase and Raul, were the only ones who did some damage yesterday. Like Raul said, Vasquez was PITCHING BACKWARDS, which means he was throwing off-speed stuff on fastball counts, e.g., 2-0 and 3-1. Let me tell ya’, I watched nearly every game for the last 4 years. STARTING PITCHERS ALWAYS PITCH BACKWARDS TO US. The braintrust charts every pitch. Don’t they know this? I don’t know what the batting average is on 2-0 and 3-1, but it seems as though we get ourselves out most of the time on off-speed stuff. This line-up loves to hit fastballs, so on these counts they either (1) swing early on something off-speed or (2) take a lot of lollipop sliders and hanging curves on those counts. Maybe it’s time to start hitting backwards!!! On 2-0 and 3-1, they need to look for something other than a fastball…CJ pulled a “Vasquez” yesterday. The Fox guys were saying how Vasquez had been having a hiccup in every start. (BTW, the best hiccup remedy is a spoonful of sugar. Works every time!) Well, it was CJ who had the hiccups. Aside from that 3-batter stretch, he pitched WELL. He was throwing a very GOOD 2-seamer at the lefties’ hips, and they froze all day while the ball was coming back over the inside corner. That pitch of his is Maddux-esque. On the other hand, the first-pitch fastball to Francouer was a bad call. He is a dead fastball hitter, and now that he has opened his stance, he can handle the inside fastball better…OK, I put WELL and GOOD in caps because I’m sick and tired of so many people in sports, including the announcers, butchering the use of these two words. Simply put, the word GOOD is an “adjective,” which is a word that describes a noun (a noun is a person, place, or thing), whereas the word “WELL” is an “adverb,” i.e., a word that describes a verb (an action word). So it’s “he threw well,” not “he threw good. It’s “he hit well,” not “he hit good.” It’s “they played defense well,” not “they played defense good.” On the other hand, “they played good defense” is correct. It’s really a very simple concept! We Americans have enough problems to worry about. The last thing we need to do is to show how stupid we’ve become as a country every time one of our public figures opens his or her mouth.
May 10th, 2009 at 9:50 am
You know what, your gonna loose a lot of games over the course of a year and when you loose games that your starter throws 8 innings and you have to be happy knowing how much difference that extra couple of innings can make in keeping the pen healthy.
Still not confident any of the starters are settled in and comfortable, but I can live with this loss and hope its the consensus feeling.
