The Phillies have sent Andrew Carpenter to AAA Lehigh Valley and have brought up reliever Sergio Escalona from AA Reading.

Escalona, a 24-year-old left-hander, was 0-0 with a 2.12 ERA, 16 K and 8 BB this season as Reading’s closer. He notched 10 saves.

    Why not Koplove or Majewski???

  2. mikemike Says:

Because this guy if he does anything will mean the end of taschner, Then when he is let go they will bring in either donald or mayberry, donald has been playing three position lately, and if donald shows something it is the end ofbrunlett, so what this is the first of three allstar moves, we subtract, Cairo, brunlett, Taschner, replace with escalona, donald mayberry

Here’s a good rundown of the current bullpen prospects – http://phuturephillies.com/2009/05/14/daily-discussion-4/#more-2690

  4. mikemike Says:

Swimmer is the stud of the group. The first five on that list aren’t anything but retreads. De Fraus is getting a lot of attention too. but both him and swimmer are in a so it will be a year away.

  5. Justin Says:

Schwimer is really good, and should move through the system rather quickly having pitched in college. I’m a little surprised by Escalona’s addition to the bullpen but more than likely it’s just a guy to send down once Romero returns. I doubt it’s to send Taschner down or DFA him because if they were to do that then a bat would have been added or Koplove/Majewski would have been added.

  6. Andrew R. Says:

Yes, Escalona is just there for some bullpen support. 4 games in 48 hours can certainly put stress on a bullpen. It also gives us a little look at Escalona. If he gets in and performs, maybe he stays for a while. Having an extra arm for a week or so certainly doesn’t hurt. We definately won’t be missing miguel cairo and his 2 hits.

  7. Havoc Says:

Don’t think we need this guy to worry about the end of Taschner. It’s almost time to Free J.C! As soon as he comes back Taschner has no spot on the team.

  8. Justin Says:

Plus Zagurski’s on the comeback trail.

  9. Keystone Says:

Cairo is gone and no i guess we won’t be missing his 2 hits but what about Bruntlett and his 3 hits and that in 11 more AB’s than Cairo. Only the pitchers have worse batting averages than Bruntlett’s .107 mark. And we cant use the argument that its nice for Charlie to have him for his defense on the bench because we already have J Roll’s underperforming bat and great defense. We cant afford to load the bench with guys for their defense abilities and “hope” they turn it around.
P.S. Dobbs is hitting.125 with 4 hits and no extra base hits!

Why is Durbin still the Jeltz? Need an update! :)

  11. JeffR Says:

Our bench is a joke this year with the exception of Stairs and we need a 13th pitcher? Going into interleague play no less. So Bruntlett is our big righthanded DH against AL lefties like Sabathia? I’d love to get rid of him altogether as mike said. But get a righthand bat someone, anyone. We went most of the last 2 years with one lefty reliever and now we need 4. Agree with Justin that they’re taking the easy way out for when JC returns and will just send back Escalona. They didn’t even want to decide between Taschner and Eyre.

  12. Howard Says:

Anyone know what’s going on with Kendrick?

  13. joedad Says:

Bruntlett is an experienced utility player who can play all infield positions and some outfield. You can’t cut him and hope that Donald will be any more reliable. If Donald sucks, there is nothing to fall back on.

  14. Michael N. Says:

Just dump Taschner for Romero when he comes back. Dump Bruntlett for Donald. and then we goood!!

  15. Jim Says:

    who?

  16. Phillies Phan SC Says:

Who the heck who knows ANYTHING about baseball want to dump Bruntlett? He is the only true utility player. I mean, at this point we don’t need to be dumping anyone now… What if Donald doesn’t perform, then what? If he does, dump one of the pitchers…

  17. Havoc Says:

Bruntlett’s job isn’t to hit off the bench. He’s our super utility guy. If anyone is hurt or needs a day to rest Bruntlett can play pretty much every position on the field. I do agree though it would be nice to have a right handed Matt Stairs, but not at the expense of Bruntlett he’s way more valuable than most people seem to understand.
