Phils Bomb Bronx For 7-3 Win

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, May 22, 2009 09:55 PM

PhilsYanksThe balls flew out of Yankee Stadium, alright, but the Phils hit more of them, and with more men on base. They defeated the Yankees, 7-3, in the first game of a three-game set, snapping New York’s nine-game win streak.

Moreover, the Phillies had better pitching. Brett Myers pitched an assured, sparkling eight innings, giving up three runs (all solo home runs) on eight hits, walking none and striking out five. The Yankees never got into a groove as Myers located the fastball, threw in his superb curveball and had hitters guessing. Myers turned to 4-2 on the season.

Jimmy Rollins set the tone early with a leadoff home run, launching the home run derby with a gimme shot to right. Carlos Ruiz followed with a gimme to left in the second inning. With a 3-0 lead, Jayson Werth catapulted a left-field upper-deck two-run shot. And of course, Raul Ibanez threw one in for good measure.

Chase Utley also drove in a run. Ruiz was the hitting star, going 3-for-4. Ryan Madson cleaned up with a 1-2-3 ninth.

We won game one against the Sox last year but then dropped the next two. The Phils gotta win atleast one more in this series. Dont loose focus, end this road trip well

  2. Geoff Says:

Brett Myers was rock solid tonight. And Raul hit another RAUUUUUUUUL tonight. Its been decided, Im going to go pick up his Red Jersey Tee sometime this week. If he keeps this up, hes going to make the All Star Team and win the MVP. Hes right up there with Pujols in the key categories.

Also, is AJ burnett worth all that money? HECK NO, that was a huge mistake. Sabathia is one thing, but they gave this guy MAD money and I dont know why…Glad its not the Phillies’ problem….

Glad to hear Mayberry get called up to DH Sat and Sun. Wonders whats happening with those Phantom Jake Peavy talks…

  3. nate Says:

game 6 from the 93 series is on espn classic. i wonder how it ends. probably with me crying.

  4. Evan Says:

I never saw game 6, what happened?

  5. Stuart Says:

    No lidge to close?

  6. me Says:

How can you be encouraged by Myer’s start when he allowed 3 solo shots? That’s his problem, we can hit bombs off of him. He got kinda lucky – a baserunner here and there when the shots were hit and this could have been a close call.

  7. Keith Says:

    Myers was great tonight

  8. Dave Says:

How can we be encouraged by Myer’s start? Because he went 8 innings and only gave up 3 runs. It doesn’t matter if he gives up the longball or not as long as he keeps the overall score low. You don’t get extra style points for hitting a home run. How did he get lucky that there were no baserunners? There were no baserunners because he didn’t let them on base. You can also say that he was unlucky because they left him in too long, or that he’s playing in a bandbox of a stadium.

  9. Stu Says:

That was the best I’ve seen Brett pitch this year by far. He was in control of all his pitches with good velocity. If he keeps this up we’ve got two solid pitchers. Good luck to J Happ tomorrow!

  10. willy Says:

why did burnett bean utley? what did rollins do?

  11. Evan Says:

Rollins hit a first pitch HR. Its a dick thing to do, but pitchers do it sometimes. Throw at the next guy cause your pissed or something.

  12. Phillies Phan SC Says:

Evan, Joe Carter knocked a HR off of Mitch Williams #99. Don’t get us reliving that. We are WFC’s

me – He kept people off base so they were solo shots. 3 ER in 8 innings is nothing to complain about. Yankee Stadium is a cigar box, we have to expect it there.

  13. SJ Mike Says:

Kind of irrelevant, but Leno just had a good Mets joke. He referenced the woman who got her hand stuck int he toilet fishing out the gold tooth at Citi Field. And Leno said that it’s the first time in history that the fans are going down the toilet faster then the Mets.

  14. Phillies Phan SC Says:

Willy, I think Utley was an accident. I think Myers and even The ump acted right by taking care of business (both parts). Notice, ump gave warnings and we had a real game. Meyers pitched so well afterwards. None of the crap if the game went on – WITHOUT ejections (as it should be). Excellent handling by ALL.

  15. Phillies Phan SC Says:

    SJ Mike, that is hilarious!

  16. beta sigma shag Says:

didn’t see the game on vacation, but to being lucky no one was on base, maybe he would not have thrown those pitches. and with the lead I would rather see a solo hr then to walk the guy and let the next guy hit one. Nice to see Brett coming around. and the bats still hot good luck to happ tomorrow go phillies

  17. Miles Says:

This was such an awesome game. I’m so giddy about it I can barely sleep. Myers was filthy, although I’m wondering where all the Myers haters went that I was fighting off on here during his last start. Our win tonight shows the baseball world that we arent ready to roll over and settle for just one good year. Let’s go get em again tomorrow.

  18. mikeB Says:

Manuel allowed Myers to pitch an inning too long. Was probably ready to come out after seven innings but I am sure Manuel will take the two Yankee home runs in that eighth inning in exchange for his bullpen getting that extra inning off with Madsen just needing to pitch the ninth.

  19. Doug D. Says:

I’m glad Myers pitched the 8th. He was under 100 pitches at the start of the inning. Every inning that the bullpen doesn’t have to pitch now is another inning they can pitch in August and September. Sure, he gave up to solo dingers, but that was because he had a big lead and was challenging Jeter and Texiera…The situation w/Brett throwing behind Jeter was handled great by the umps. Everyone knew what was going on. That’s just one of those unwritten rules of baseball. There will be no repercussions a la Jenks because Brett didn’t throw at Jeter’s head. Also, the game was not between 2 AL teams. The vast majority of bench-clearing brawls occur between AL teams because the pitchers don’t have to face unfriendly fire in the batter’s box.

  20. Mike W. Says:

“Ibanez threw one on for good measure”??? That was only the longest HR hit by any player in all of baseball this season. A little props for that, perhaps.

  21. Evan Says:

Phan I was just kidding, of course I know the horrible horrible ending to game 6. Not only have I seen it a million times, especially last year during the WS run, but its one of my most vivid childhood memories.

  22. dug Says:

i think they made that right field wall a little too shallow and short for the Phils lineup.

Burnett is a scumbag, he belongs in NY. It cracks me up how chase doesnt even flinch when the ball is gonna hit him. kinda reminds me of happy gilmore in the batting cage.

Myers pitched awesome. when he gave up the homeruns they had a big enough lead, he was just trying to put the ball in play.

i think im gonna bring a sign to sundays game. “I came to NY to see the World Champions play. GO PHILS!”

  23. Phillies Phan SC Says:

Evan – no problem LOL I was 16 too and I was destroyed from baseball for about 10 years after that LOL

  24. christopher Says:

hell of a win to start he series last night, one of the most exciting games of the season.
