its about time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 9th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Madson now the closer?
June 9th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Hate to go with the negativity but why now? Why not approximately 6 weeks ago when Brad’s knee flared up. This is just like Jimmy last year where the personnel guys flat out got it wrong when they had the chance.
I’m glad to see sense got the better of pride but some of us having been saying this for weeks, Lidge needed to go to the DL to let his body catch up with his aggressive closer mentality.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Why in the sam hell did they bring up Bako?
People are speculating trade talk but who wants Bako or Coste for that matter.
The Big Dipper
June 9th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Okay Okay, get him right now. I like the idea.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
NJ, I guess I was in a state of denial in thinking Lidge’s problems on the mound had nothing to do with an earlier injury. Now, like you I’m looking at the organization and how they had handled the situation with Lidge. Questions have entered in my mind on when and what they knew about the seriousness of Lidge’s knee inhjury.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Yeah, this probably should have come a week or so ago. It’s a tough situation to gauge. Hopefully Lidge will come back with a clear head.
I know the Phillies don’t need a DH until sometime next week. Maybe at that time Bako will be sent down and Mayberry called up? Bringing up Bako frees up either Coste or Ruiz to be a pinch hitter with Bako staying on the bench as the backup catcher.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Bako? Hell, I would have preferred Hewitt haha… I guess this means Coste is our right handed PH now, with Bako serving as the backup C.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
and btw, complete sarcasm there. Please don’t jump down my throat pretending I wanted Hewitt brought up.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
No this makes NO sense. Why have a ebnch weakened with Bako on it vs the Red Sox when we could have Mayberry on it. Is Mayberry injured? Why not bring up Cervenak? Ozuna? Cairo? I assume they will place Myers on the 60 DL to make room for Bako on the 40 Man.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Are we playing the RedSox tonight, and we get to use a DH????
ohh.. no that’s right, we’re playing the Mets.. and we get to worry about who the DH is when the time comes..
Mayberry can’t hit anything but fastballs.. and they feel that Coste is the better RH bat so he’ll get to swing a little, Bako is the back-up catcher.. actually..
Coste would probably be used in a double-switch before they would just use him to hit and put Bako in the game
June 9th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
I guess they assume Mayberry won’t benefit from a PH role? The timing on this interleague play is brutal, since Lidge will be eligibale to come off the DL on the 21st, and we leave for the American League parks on the 23rd, when we’ll need a DH, (Mayberry). In the meantime, I guess they want Mayberry getting regular playing time.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
is Bako better than Cairo?
June 9th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Thank Goodness!!!
June 9th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
Well I think the Phillies think Coste/Ruiz is better than Cairo. By having Bako on the team, it frees up Coste or Ruiz to pinch hit.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
I don’t think the move for Bako can be heavily criticised yet, there’s a reason for it and it’s not going to be permanent.
There’s a trend with Lidge, he had off-season knee surgery before starting his tenure with the Phils and starting on the DL meant his body and mind were on the same page. This year he was either hurt from the get-go or picked up a knock and was given a few measly days off before being thrown into non-save situations before this period of blown saves including being sent to the mound 4 straight days before the LA series.
This isn’t Lidge’s fault to me, the hardest job in baseball for a player is to win and hold the closers job. The role means the pitcher has to be 110% aggressive both on and off-the-field with no room for doubt. Of course Lidge was going to go out there and say he was fine, sure his knee was probably better but his body was clearly not on the same level as his mind and that’s why his pitches were left up, the bite on them was gone and we all know the results.
This is the one thing I criticise above all about the Phillies front-office and coaching is they play scared, with a reliever perfectly capable of a short stint closing in Madson the Phils were scared to send Lidge to the DL, just as they were scared to with Jimmy last year which is a pattern in personnel moves from trades to draft picks, to prospect promotions.
The Phils have to get over their fear of making moves and not expect to get burnt and have nothing to come back with.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
when can Lidgey come back? the 24th? or the 22nd?
June 9th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Don- We are facing The MEts and Red Sox, but the Red Sox have an outstanding pen right now. We have a subpar bench. Cairo and Ozuna are both doing well in Leigh, why not bring them up. So is Cervenak. Why Bako? A 3rd catcher? It just doesn’t seem to help the team.
The bench will be very important when going agianst Santana and on Thursday with Moyer pitching, not to mention this weekend, it just seems a waste to use Bako up here when we could call up others who are actually capable of hitting the ball.
Coste hasn’t been good this yr. I would rather them just bring someone esle up who can also play the field. Just don’t like this move.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
I do not know Mary Jean. When can Lidge come back?
June 9th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
So, when Bako is sent down, does he through waivers? I am guessing we don’t have options on him.
I don’t understand this move.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
GNASHING OF TEETH, PANIC, FEAR !
It’ll work out, least we know it was definitely and injury and not some mental BS.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Lidge’s DLing was retroactive to Sunday.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Bako will win tonight’s game with an inside the park homerun in the 29th inning
June 9th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
The 22nd folks it is retro-active to Sunday the 7th.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
I believe Lidge is backed dated to Sunday so he would be eligible to come back on Monday June 22.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
As much as I think we all have great opinions and comments, we are not “in-the-know” on what is going on in the minds of management guys and gals. Tim has the most inside scoop, but I think he will even tell you that he doesn’t get the move either because there has to be some other reasoning for this. It does not make sense on the surface, so let’s see how it plays out and not panic.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Because how someone hits in AAA… or in AA doesn’t reflect one bit on how they will perform against the best pitching, the pitching in the MAJOR LEAGUES..
Why not bring Cairo up? …. when Cairo started the year 1-for-10 as a pinch hitter, people wanted his head… now because he’s hitting the ball (when’s he gets to play on a regular basis) he’s an option again?
The same thing will happen to any “quality bat” that doesn’t get regular playing time.. they will grow stale..
Consider the legit options.. Coste, Cairo, Ozuna.. (Mayberry should be playing everyday in AAA)
Coste is the best option of those guys..
Bako is a guy that can’t hit anyway.. so he is there as the emergency Catcher in case Coste is the pinch-hitter or a double-switch, etc..
On Friday.. if we think Mayberry can do a better job against Beckett, DiceK, and Lester.. he’ll get called-up for the series
June 9th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
the reality is that the 25th man on the roster usually doesn’t ever play.. and when he does get that rare chance, you can’t expect great things.
People will find a reason to bitch no matter who that guy is..
Taguchi last year, Cairo this year.. Bako (a great defensive catcher)
and this move would allow Coste to swing the bat.. he often catches Moyer, so maybe Ruiz becomes a pinch-hit, defensive replacement late in that game…
I think people just like to complain, but nobody on here could do a better job than our Front Office does…
June 9th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
I agree Don M. It’s not like the Phillies have to worry about Bako’s options. If they want to send him down in two days, they’ll do it and call up Mayberry. This isn’t a big deal.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
You’re right on the money Don M. The 25th man rarely comes into play.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
If they make it retroactive to before the Dodgers series can we pretend those two blown saves don’t count?
In all seriousness though, how bad is his knee? Or is it a head problem? We don’t really know for sure, and I can’t even say which scenario I’d prefer.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
so no Lidge for the Mets, Redsoxs, Blue Jays, and Orioles
should be interesting . . .
June 9th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I still think there is a deal coming down for a righthanded hitting outfielder. Just this past week, when Victorino went down with his hip and we were unable to recall Mayberry, we were stuck with Bruntlett in right against a lefthanded starter. That is unacceptable !
June 9th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
honestly…it’s about time…with the fact that he has pitched the way he has…it’s clear that it was a continued knee problem…hoepfully he will rest enough to heal, and he will get back to form a little after the all star break…and we doing well enough even with his blown saves that i think for the time being we can manage without him…madson has looked very good this year and many times i thought he should’ve stayed in the game for the 9th…
i think we can win these next set of games…
June 9th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Remember that (legendary) Mets game of August 26 2008, when Coste came in as a PH and went 4-4, including the game winning RBI to score Victorino in the 13th? Ruiz stayed in the game at 3B.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
“The Bridge to Lidge” becomes “The Bridge to Madson County”….pow!
June 9th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
Does anyone think lidge is really hurt physical. This is a trip to get his head on straight. He all of a sudden has a sprain knee, Everything I read is his stuff is still there, it’s location that is killing him. Balko is to make coste the right hand bat, that sucks, but mayberry is not the answer, I really don’t know who can fill that role and be good at it. But I don’t trust coste to be the guy. But as long as they are in first and contenting they will move along, unless a top starter is available or a la rosa type bat, for the bench.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
yes! http://mlb.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?content_id=3374429
“That’s gonna win it for the Phils! What a comeback! . . .”
June 9th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
I posted this on the other board fellers. Perhaps, just perhaps. the Phils think that Coste is their best righty bat. If so, then he might be called upon on the 6th or 7th inning when they need to get a run across. They probably wanna use him without having to take Ruiz out of the game. If Coste hits and leaves the game and Ruiz gets hurt they’ll need someone to catch the rest of the game. Hence, Bako. Ugh.
The Dipsy
June 9th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Don – Please stop it. Mayberry is what he is. He can play everyday but he’s not going to become a great hitter. He’s a strikeout/HR guy. You aren’t ruining him if he plays on the bench. Donald? Maybe he’s injured but playing everyday sure hasn’t helped. Marson, same thing. Why not bring up Marson at this point? Catchers don’t play all the time anyways.
Why not Ozuna? Why not Cervenak? But a catcher who can’t hit? It would be one thing if Coste was ripping the cover off the ball, but your pathetic excuses for trying to make this move seem brilliant is nuasiating.

You are so right, with JRoll strugging, Bruntlett hitting just as bad and Dobbs struggling, a fielder would be the LAST thing we needed to use going against our rivals. My god you are sooooo right. Good thing we have 3 catchers. I mean we could just use one every 3 innings so we don’t wear them down. Now I see the point of it all.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Bako will only be around for these 4 series, let’s enjoy him.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
From another post…
That’s a very logical explanation, Dipsy. It makes a lot of sense when you consider how well Ruiz has been hitting. They don’t really wanna take the bat out of his hands right now and they would certainly rather have him behind the plate but they still want to give Coste some opportunities (the guy has been clutch at times)… bring in a 3rd insurance catcher and Coste becomes your primary RH bat. Is he our best option? Maybe not… but it’s cheap and it affords us some flexibility until we decide what we want to do (if we want to do anything). If Feliz/Ruiz keep hitting, you don’t need to worry about double switches, do you?
June 9th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
but why Bako over Marson though? hmm cuz Bako has no future?
June 9th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
I say this in support of Brad – I am glad he is on the DL and getting that knee right. I just hope it is nothing worse than expected. In full support as Brad – as he is my favorite Phillie – we have shown we can win while he is out, and I just hope he returns strong and with no more blown saves.
June 9th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Bako is hitting .357… so why not?!
June 9th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
nobody said anything about this move being brilliant (I’ll only enter this paragraph once though)
Given the options.. THEY feel that Coste is a nice option as a RH-bat.. better than Cairo, Cervanek, Ozuna, ..and Mayberry.. who at 25 years old, and with only 3 games of experience in the Majors.. is still considered a prospect. Coste is much less likely to K, and still gives some pop from the Right side… and Given the options, I’d rather have him at the plate with the game on the line than any of the other guys you mentioned.
My posts defending moves that the team makes is not because they make the greatest moves ever.. its that i see the bigger picture and realize that it was what THEY felt was the best move.
Slightly less dramatic than, “No this makes NO sense.”
…
Lou Marson is still developing his game, and working on things.. which is why they got rid of Jason Jaramillo.. so that Marson could play everyday. because a guy gets better by playing baseball.. not by watching baseball. .. that’s the same reason why Mayberry is in AAA, instead of on our bench.. he can still get better, but that won’t happen if he’s just watching..
Cairo, Ozuna, Bruntlett, Coste, etc.. are as good as they’ll ever be.. they don’t need to worry about developing these guys
June 9th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
I wish him the best and hope he gets ready to close another last game in our next World Series victory
June 9th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
it blows my mind that people don’t understand the concept of prospects needing to play everyday..
It’s one thing to not know things and ask questions.. it’s another to complain about every move the Phillies make.. and then when someone tries to explain their logic.. you pretend to know what you’re talking about, and knock the people posting on here
why not call up Drabek to stand around in the bullpen?? .. you know, as long as we aren’t worried about our prospects getting regular playing time in the minors
June 9th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
not to mention that calling up prospects starts their arbitration clock and brings them closer to free agency.
June 9th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
Amaro’s statement about Lidge said that the decision was completely that of the Phillies organization, and not Lidge’s. So basically the pain hasn’t gotten any worse for him but Charlie, Ruben, and others obviously felt that the time off would help the knee and/or his confidence.
This is a great time to make the move. We have two huge series coming up that we would like to have a healthy, confident closer for AND we gave Lidge time to try to correct it and he didn’t so now make the move.
Let’s not all jump on the “Bridge to Madson County” too quick though. We hear all the time (specifically from Wheels haha) that pitching the 9th is a totally different animal and I really believe it is true. I have faith that Madson’s stuff will get him through it, however.
June 9th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
just heard on Daily News Live that Lidge thinks something was wrong during the pile after the strikeout that won the World Series. Something to the effect of…He felt the joy of winning the World Series then said something in his knee didn’t feel right. Hope its not serious…
June 10th, 2009 at 10:06 am
It’s about time, I think this is going to be great for him.
As far as Bako goes, whatever. The team obviously saw it as a bench upgrade, or they have something planned. Believe it or not, they know more about running a baseball team than you do.
Oh and why not call up Cervenak? Great idea, seeing as he’s “sidelined indefinitely” with broken wrist.
June 10th, 2009 at 10:28 am
I didn’t know Cervenak was injured that sucks for him. So Brown is out at least a month and Galvis out nearly 2 months.
But Bako is a lefty hitting catcher who can’t hit. Ruiz will get his ABs and if Coste is our BEST righty option than that’s a sad state of affairs for the Phillies.
People LOVE to bring up last yr with Taguchi how the 25th man doesn’t mean a thing, it took a perfect season from Lidge and nearly perfect from Madson coupled with a debacle from the Mets’ pen for us to make the playoffs. I don’t think we can count on the same thing happening twice. Everyone needs to contribute, even the 25th man.
But you are all right. The front office never makes mistakes. Eaton was a teriffic signning. Park may win the Cy Young. Duncan will sign and will play in the big leagues for us. I mean I am just amazed with how consistent our front office is in making decisions.
Yup they never made a mistake. Oh and Carrasco will be the righty answer to go along side Cole. No doubt about it.
