Carrasco Expected To Be Promoted

Posted by Amanda Orr, Sun, June 28, 2009 11:53 AM

Antonio Bastardo will be unable to make his next start on Wednesday due to a strained shoulder.

Cole Hamels will start  Wednesday against the Atlanta Braves.  The Phillies are expected to call up Carlos Carrasco from Triple-A Lehigh Valley and he will make his Major League debut on Thursday.

This could be the start of the Cole-Carlos era. Or it could be the next Brandon Duckworth-style fizzle.

    Anybody wanna make a prediction?

I’m going for the optimism: By season’s end, Carrasco, Happ and even Bastardo (possibly out of the pen), along with Cole will give us the most dominant group of young pitchers in the league. A trade-deadline move for a starter won’t even be necessary. (My nose grew longer as I typed that, but one can dream.)

  2. Kennedy Says:

I wonder, what does a .271 average against in AAA equate to in the majors. If hes going to go deeper than the first couple innings, he’s gonna need to throw a lot of first pitch strikes. I just hope he doesn’t fall off the deep end if he gets hit around a little.

  3. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    I want Drabek

  4. Chuck P Says:

Wow… this is a big deal, eh? I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t worried. He seems to take a little while to adjust at each level. I think that he’s a good pitcher but he has confidence issues… he has done what he has needed to do to show the big league club that he’s ready (cutting down on strikes) but this is the big test.

  5. NJ Says:

why would any sane fan want Drabek to be promoted right now?

  6. Tortured Phanatic Says:

Who said anything about sane? We’re all nuts.

  7. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Because of all the pitchers in our system from top to bottom including the major league level he is the only one that has domininated at every level he has been at!!!

Carrasco has not dominated this year, he has pitched better recently but not dominated.

We need to see if we have the goods in our own system to cover our holes in the staff, before trading away the farm for an above major league pitcher

  8. NJ Says:

Yeah but your not going to take a thansgiving day turkey out of the oven after just an hour when you’re expecting it to come out perfect after 5 hours, principle applies with Drabek.

Dominating in the minor leagues can be overrated, the BoSox won’t be expecting Bucholz to come up and dominate from the get go when he comes back up, yet too many Phils fans here seem to expect Carrasco to come up and fail to dominate so they can be proved right.

Just trying to get him some Major League EXP. to make the deal for Cliff Lee……

  10. Michael N. Says:

i guess Kendrick is stuck in AAA forever until he gets traded.

  11. 4daysrest.com Says:

    Nobody wants Kendrick. He’s garbage.

  12. mike s. Says:

i honestly think carassco has gotten bored at AAA…he’s been there a while and his stuff is excellent.

but when he saw Kendrick and Haap and Bastardo called up, he kinda got bored..

on the other hand, I’d like to see Drabek moved up to AAA to replace CC….
I mean they guy has been superb in AA…i want to see him at AAA see how he is.

  13. 4daysrest.com Says:

Mike S. – Expect Drabek to be promoted to AAA sometime in late July if he continues to be dominant at the Double-A level. They are really protecting this kid like a fine gem and they don’t want to rush him too much. A two-level jump in 3 months would be absurd. He deserves the promotion, sure, but they need to be extra careful with how fast they bump him up.

  14. A.J. Says:

I am going to the game Thursday at Turner Field, this should be interesting. Go Phillies…

  15. Miles Says:

@4daysrest.com….Remember that Cole jumped from AA to the majors in the course of about 1 month. So technically using that precedent you could promote Drabek from A to AAA in a similar time period. I agree, though. I think they will wait a little bit longer. It wouldn’t be wise for him to get any farther along than AAA this year, though.
