Gameday: Blue Jays (36-31) At Phillies (36-27)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, June 18, 2009 11:49 AM
Toronto Blue Jays (36-31) at Philadelphia Phillies (36-27)
Brad Mills vs. Joe Blanton (4-3, 5.17 ERA)
Time: 1:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Cloudy, 67
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Joe Blanton and the Phillies will face off with Brad Mills and the Blue Jays for a Business Person’s Special today at the Bank.
Mills is making his major league debut against the Phillies. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2007 draft, ascending the Jays’ system quickly thanks to some high strikeout numbers. Mills went 3-2 with a 1.10 ERA for triple-A New Hampshire this season, getting the call to Toronto because Casey Janssen hit the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. The lefty has a weird delivery, throwing a lot of curveballs and changeups with his fastball to get his strikeouts.
The Phils will be without its best lefty hitter, as Raul Ibanez hit the disabled list today. In his place comes John Mayberry Jr., who will start in right field today. Jayson Werth goes to left field; meanwhile, Jimmy Rollins will lead off and Mayberry will hit seventh.
Your gameday beer: We’re feeling pretty crummy lately, so we need something hard and strong. I suggest Bigfoot by Sierra Nevada. This Barleywine is loaded with flavor and alcohol content, coming in at more than 9 percent. It’ll hit you like a ton of bricks. Get ready for the Gs. We sure need them today.
Go Phillies!

Ok guys, we got a game with the Blue Jays today. And that only means one thing. Bad news for the Blue Jays!
June 18th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
With these at-home numbers, I wonder if I should pull for the AL at the all-star game this year.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
I can’t have a gameday beer for a !:00 game.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
Morris, no, it’s bad news for the Phillies..
You do say that same line everyday don’t you? lol
June 18th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
hey tim – nice call on the big foot barleywine! a great, great beer. i’ve got a few in the fridge that i might tap into tonight.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Just a quick comment on the Toronto’s patchwork rotation and yet another rookie pitcher starting today. It’s amazing to see the Blue Jays hanging tough in their division when they lost ALL FIVE of their starters to injuries. It’s an indication of how talented their position players are and the depth for replacements (pitchers).
June 18th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Hey Tim, New Hampshire is the Blue Jays Double A affiliate, not Triple A. I saw them 3 weeks ago against the Reading Phillies.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Oh, right, sorry. He’s a double-A callup.
June 18th, 2009 at 12:36 pm
A crappy day and the Phillies crappy play have put us all in a crappy mood.
Only 10 more games and then it’s intraleague time!!
June 18th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
The rain has been steady here in Central NJ. The same in Philly?
June 18th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Why don’t they just post-pone the game until like 7:05? When the weather is supposed to clear up? No point in starting the game since it’s going to be a steady rain. They have a home game tomorrow anyway.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
1st and 2nd no out and we don’t even get a guy to 3rd base.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
Depressing. I don’t know what to make of this team, but I am loving Joey B. these days. Hopefully, I don’t have to eat these words in the near future.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
OK: No sweeps allowed. Let’s take these birds down.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
ugh.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:39 pm
Raul freaking Chavez hits a home run. The backup freaking catcher.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
I give up. Just awful…
June 18th, 2009 at 1:41 pm
50 pitches through 2 innings for Blanton. Looks like the pen will get abused again.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
This pitching staff has COMPLETELY melted down and burned out and tanked. EVERY one of these guys has looked like garbage at some point this season. IF YOURE GOING TO BUILD A SMALL BALLPARK YOU NEED CRAZY GOOD PITCHING! Yes, Happ and Hamels are still going well, Blanton is ok. But TOO MANY home runs, too LITTLE innings pitched leads to a tired burned out and injured bullpen.
Amaro and Charlie get it, they know they need at least one SP and oone RP, and a bat. but theyre trying to get away with buying time until the deadline. GUESS WHAT GUYS? YOU DONT HAVE THAT TIME. You have to start making moves THIS WEEK.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
I am watching the play by play and I can already see the Werth at bat play out… look at strikes and swing at balls, missing badly.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Thank you Jayson Werth.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Ah… that’s more like it…
June 18th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Forget the bullpen…we need 10 starting pitchers, so each one can pitch a half game.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Sweet… the re-jinx is on!
June 18th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
I am sick of the gloom here
June 18th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
AJ – sorry, I was trying to be funny.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Can anyone who is watching the game on TV give me an update on the weather? All I am getting through Gamecast is a light rain.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Look, theyre still in first, but we know what it takes to win and we ALL know they need a few more good arms if theyre going to repeat this time. Thats TOTALLY feasible to get which is why I still think theyre going to repeat.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
JeffS – not you. Just everyone implying the season is over. We’ll be fine, maybe not in June, but we’ll be fine.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
way to hold the runner there, Joe.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:57 pm
Guarnateed Charlie gets thrown out of this game…
June 18th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
These American league clubs are just flat out better than we are. The Blkue jays would probably anyt division other than the AL East
June 18th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
NOBODY is saying the season is over..NOBODY. They CLEARLY need help though, and they cant afford to wait to go and get that help.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Why? What is Charlie doing? I hate weekday afternoon games…we should put a TV in our office.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
No theyre not. THe Phillies are one of the top 2/3 teams in abseball talentwise. theyre just not PLAYING like we know they can…its called a slump offensively.
Pitching wise the Phillies need help.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Geoff – read the other board. They are, they are.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
Theyre playing so bad that if I was the manager id get thrown out to try and fire them up and because i cant even watch them scuffle like this without blowing up.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
No – we are a better team. They are PLAYING better.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
The Phillies starting pitching is getting beat down by the worst offense in the AL East.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
70 pitches through 3
June 18th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
You all are doomed. LET’S GO METS. They are playing the Os, which you all could not even beet in 1983
June 18th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
This is the worst series of the season. Charlie needs to get tossed or something.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
My bad, didn’t notice that had already been discussed.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Look, this is happening because the club is taking too long to bring in help..so the universe is basically beating Amaro over the head saying ” YOU CANT WAIT THAT LONG, YOU HAVE TO MOVE NOW” Its making it really obvious that they need TWO starting pitchers not just one. Moyer…SEYA PAL, Bastardo..BULLPEN. bring in cliff lee & a RH 4th starter. bring in bullpen help, bring in bench help.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Have the Phils been swept in a 3 game series this year? I know they lost both games of a 2 game series against the Mets, but have they been swept in a 3 game series?
June 18th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Yes Griffin, they did LOOSE to the METS. LETS GO METS
June 18th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
IM SICK of arguing about Moyer…its over, get it over with, hes gone. GONE. THey need to beef up their rotation now, screw him. He can only beat bad teams now.
they have a DEEP farm system and theyre going to need that depth once theyre finished dealing prospects.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
the phillies should petition to play all their games on the road
June 18th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
Moyer is not done. he is fine. We also do NOT need to blow up the farm system or we will be the Washington Nationals in 2012 until 2018
June 18th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
I wish we were playing the Nationals this weekend
June 18th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
You all are no fun
June 18th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Listening to this game on my iPhone. The commentators suck and the one guy sounds like Rocky. HAHA
June 18th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
I didnt say blow it up…I said WE HAVE THE DEPTH TO GO OUT AND GET HELP AND STILL HAVE A GOOD FARM SYSTEM LEFT.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Yes, whenever we’ve hit the doldrums thus far the Nationals were there to spare us. There was a nice Utley for MVP on Baseball Tonight. Big hit here would be nice. Someone needs to put this limping team on their shoulders.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
rivlez – Yes, LET’S GO METS, friend. We will be in first this weekend and it will be glorius to stick it to these boo birds. HAHAHAHHA
June 18th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
what a double play ball right now….
June 18th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
This weather blows.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Some of you guys are absolutely ridiculous. YOU ARE 36-27 FOR CHRIST SAKE!!! Just by reading what most of you write, I would swear you guys are last place in the NL. Just calm down. Every team goes through bad stretches.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
This pitcher reminds me of Zito..anyone else?
June 18th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
That was ball four but I’ll take the sac fly. His at bats are emotional roller coasters….he looks terrible on almost every pitch but there is always a chance he’s going to rip one in the gap. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like it.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
pick pick pick. Blow the gates open, Feliz.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:20 pm
Yeah, i agree with rivlez, (who i assume is a Mets Fan). This bitching and whining about the team is ridiculous. Who cares if they don’t play well against the AL it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. They play well against all the NL competition, and thats what they do every year in the 2nd half, so calm the hell down.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
at least J wreth got the run in, this guy onlly throw junk they should crush him
June 18th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Joe: Please keep this game where it is at. Please.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Yeah…all you guys need to freakin calm down. I think we win this game today.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
The Little Guy, I am a Mets fan that reads lots of blogs and have been on this site for a few years. Mets fans and Phillies fans are the same shit. They lose a game and the world is over. All I read lately is get this guy and that guy. If it was only that easy. I think the biggest culprit this year has been the bullpen this year for the Phillies. The offense had the same outages as this year but the bullpen was ridiculous. We’ll see what happens.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Have the strikes been hard to come by this homestand? The pitch counts and walks have been ridiculous.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
geoff needs to take a break, Moyer is your fifth starter he is going to have outing like that he will be in the rotation all year, the offense needs to score like 10 runs against this AAA pitcher who is affraid to thow a fast ball to anyone
June 18th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
geoff, I have to agree on Moyer. He’s just painful to watch. All a team has to do is be somewhat patient and it’s game over. We have to get pitching and now or the pen is going to be destroyed.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Rivlez, completely agree. As long as the Mets lose when the Phillies lose….who cares? Its the AL, these games don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. The Phils went 3-11 last year in interleague, won the NL East, Won the Pennant, Won the World Series. I guess everyone would of been much happier had they took 2 of 3 from the Angels last year, and swept the A’s.
Its 3-2 bot 4, put the razor blades down.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
The Blue Jays are a good team and the Phillies might have been due for a let down. It’s just frustating to keep losing @ home
June 18th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
good quick inning for JB actually home from work today, did not realize they were on this afternoon, bad fan bad fan, so I will check in during breaks buy I can actually watch it live instead of dvr today.
Missed the runs how did the Jays score was it a three run hr by the catcher
June 18th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
I just wish a Phillies pitcher could go 7. Blanton has 81 pitches in only the 4th inning. Hopefully he can streth out 6 innings. This bullpen is dying.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
2 run HR by the catcher and RBI double by Wells
June 18th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
shag, 2 run homer by the backup catcher, and rbi double by Wells.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Jeff, i disagree, i think they should make Blanton go 7, i really dont care what his pitch count is, as long as he keeps the score the same, keep him in the game, let him throw 120 pitches or so, he has 4 off days coming anyway.
Pitch counts are the death of baseball. For a starter to pitch 6 innings and give up 3 runs, they praise him, thats a joke.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Sweep Sweep Sweep
June 18th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Btw…I brought this up a couple weeks ago but imagine if Eaton was still on the Orioles and was on the mound this weekend. I promise you the walk-up ticket sales would have set a record. And it would have gotten our offense back on track. Damn.
YES JIMMMMYYYYY
June 18th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLINS!
June 18th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Rollins 2 for 2. single, 2 run homer, and bb.
Wheres the Jason Donald slurpers?
June 18th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Nice
June 18th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
There you go
June 18th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
nice JRoll, walks will kill you way to walk the pitcher, is that two hits for JRoll today, still need to take him out of leadoff now or will he be a god if they win this game today
June 18th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Yes Blanton has got 140 pitches in him today.
Would LOVE to see JRoll really heat up. That alone would fix our wagon.
I suppose the starters need to start going deeper into games.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Little guy relax. Nobody is yelling for Jason Donald. Jimmy has a long way to go before we can start jumping up and down. He has been so bad this year. I hope he starts to get back to his all star status…
June 18th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
Well with all of the damage we have been allowing the visiting pitchers to do to us, that walk by Blanton returned some of the damage by getting us two runs. I’m going to count that as a second bomb by Blanton since I know he will never hit another.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Jeff, he has been hitting the ball hard for about 3 weeks now, now their finding holes, and the stands.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
J-Rollin…
June 18th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Well Jimmy seems to be doing ok leading off today huh,
And as much as this is going to kill me to say, cause LIttle guy is usually full of sht I have to agree with him there
June 18th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
shag you know just I do that everytime he has a bad game all of the managers will come on here and say MOVE HIM DOWN! But as I’ve said before, Jimmy is an all-star caliber player and he needs to perform wherever he is in the lineup. Charlie should not have to keep moving him around. You only lead off the first.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Haha Sarge is the man. When he joins the booth it seems like all the praising of the Phillies and what not stops. He tells it like it is and doesnt make excuses like Wheels and TMac.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
What’s with Werth lately? Seems like every other hit he’s gotten these last couple days has gone long.
Oh, and good job Jimmy. Haha, shouldn’t have walked the pitcher
June 18th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
shag? Full of shit? What are you talking about?
June 18th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
I’ve said it before but the strike zone that is called against Howard is one of the biggest that I’ve ever seen. Pitchers still get the low pitches but also get pitches that are way up. It contributes to him being behind in the count a lot more than he should. No excuses though, still gotta find a way to knock one through there.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Miles, it’s because he’s a big man.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Another quick inning by JB would be nice here, 140 is a bit high but between 110 125, and how was that 2-1 pitch to howard a strike it was below his knees
June 18th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Little guy I realize that but the strike zone needs to be more consistent. Just because a guy is huge shouldn’t change the zone as much as umps generally change it.
Oh boy here we go again.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
damn it, Blanton.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Boy Blanton is going to give it right back.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Well the strike zone is from the knees to the letters, so…People like Howard, Randy Johnson have huge strikezones. Than you have Eckstein, Pedroia and Victorino with smaller strikezones..
June 18th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
even if people were calling for Jason Donald the kid’s on the DL with torn meniscus so he’s out up til mid July. just throwing that out there to Little Guy.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Justin, i know. I was being sarcastic.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Little Guy, when ESPN or MLB.com or whoever use their KZone technologies it doesn’t all of a sudden get bigger when Howard walks up or smaller when Vic does. My point is not that the zone shouldn’t change, but that it is too drastic. Otherwise you could just throw 5 foot nothing guys up there all game and hope for walks.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Way to fight back Joe!
June 18th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
Nice escape job by Joe B.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
way to bare down JB and thanks J’s for first pitch swinging, that is the JB i know and love, never rattled just get the job done, now is time for the O to get some insurance runs
June 18th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
98 pitches through 5 for Blanton.
June 18th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
shag: was watching post-game show one night and Batalico and Mitch made an interesting point…Most lead off guys only lead off once a game which is the first inning, after that, chances are you won’t be batting first….I think batting behind the pitcher which happens more often than not, means you’ll not get alot to look at strike wise….how ever batting between Ibanez and the resurgent Feliz means pitchers can’t paint or afford to throw to many balls…
June 18th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
What an escape by Blanton btw
June 18th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
I agree with you, Miles… he’s a big guy to begin with so his strike zone is bigger than most to begin with but he doesn’t do himself any favors, either. I mean, he stands so far off of the plate and he’s so tall that most pitchers know that he can’t reach balls low and outside. A lot of umps will call those strikes because they’re tailing across the plate and it’s tougher to judge height… most of those pitches that are strikes for everyone else (normal sized guys) probably should not be for Howard.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
SEEEEYAAA
June 18th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Okay John
June 18th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
John MAYBERRY
June 18th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
it will be nice to see what the kid can do playing everyday
June 18th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
good point about the stance Chuck….although I think you would probably agree that if he did move closer to the plate people would just jam him all the time. I’m not sure he would be helping himself out that way either.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
What did I tell you??? When Ibanez gets back, Mayberry deserves a legitimate chance to be our RH bench bat… he is an opportunistic kid. Every time he gets a moment to shine, he takes it. Isn’t that what you want from a pinch hitter? I don’t think that he has to play every day to be successful… he’s not going to forget how to shag fly balls. I think that he’ll gain confidence by spending time in the bigs and getting his moments.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
And Chooch turns the lineup over. I bet Wheels is wetting himself with excitement.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
You’re probably right, Miles… he’s not a great inside hitter, either. I guess that he’s doing what’s best for him.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
Way to go Mayberry!!!!!!!!
Werth….3 homers in the last 3 games and 4 in the past 5 days or so. Just what we need from him at this time
J-Roll!!!!!!!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
I agree, I like JRoll at the lead off spot, and you are right you only lead off once a game usually, maybe two, I was just saying so many people were saying where he was hitting was making him a worse hitter
June 18th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
I agree. Chuck P…..Mayberry for the RH pinch hitter/4th outfielder/spot starter. Get the kid 200 ABs and he’ll do ok.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Adam Lind is some kind of hitter…
June 18th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
well that’s great
June 18th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
We were doing so good.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
ok, that’s enough of Blanton. I understand that Chollie wanted Blanton to pitch one more inning, but he’s done.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Chan HO!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Mayberry just seems to shine when you tell him, “Alright, you’re going to get a chance… it will probably be a few at bats… make the most of it.” He loves that kind of pressure…
Blanton not getting it done…
June 18th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
C’mon, Ho…
June 18th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
The Jays have been relentless in this series
June 18th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
miles – strike zone’s height is a function of player’s height…the revised parameters are supposed to be under the arm pits to bottom of the knees….that’s why Pete Rose and Bowa had hunched over batting stances…it shrunk the strike zone but compromised there power which didn’t matter as they hit for contact
June 18th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Parks 2 seamer is coming in nice lately.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Right on j reed, right on..
June 18th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
He has been nasty lately. I’m digging it.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
WHEW!!! OK, so Blanton still has a chance of picking up a W. Park always makes me nervous…
June 18th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Chan Ho is a pimp
June 18th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
this Toronto lineup is pretty good… everyone except Vernon Wells is batting over .275.
Great job, Ho.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
never easy but Chan Ho did the job,
June 18th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Money out of the pen baby! No more starts for you Chan Ho!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
After his recent run of success I’m going to place him above So, but still behind Tad. He will need to be effective for a couple months yet to pass Tad.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Phils traded Donald, Escalona and Cash Considerations to Milwaukee for Dave Bush!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
yeah, little guy i think when he uses it with the slider he does well…sometimes he tries to pitch a more asian style game as and he gets to, well for lack of a better word …”pitcherly” for his own good
June 18th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
mark – where’d you hear that?
June 18th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Yeah i second j reed. I just went on mlb trade rumors, nothing on there..
June 18th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Joke
June 18th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Cool! Mark
June 18th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
I can see whjy lh batters would have a hard time with that Jays reliever
June 18th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Chan Ho – keep it stupid- two pitches: two seamer and slider.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
That was a cannon by Mayberry, but didn’t he kind of take his time after he picked the ball up there?
June 18th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Yea, Mayberry made a mistake taking his time and now it has cost them. Tie game
June 18th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
i wish chan ho was still pitching….ugh..romero cant find the strike zone!!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
This is a nightmarish outing by JC
June 18th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Romero looking awful
June 18th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
Also, this team has trouble keeping one run leads. I am not a fan of Romero b/c he is too wild. Bases Loaded.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
That was so close at first. What in the world is Chavez doing turning around?!
June 18th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
romero has been REALLY wild lately…
June 18th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
That did not just happen? I need to pick me up some of that 9% beer.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
jeez romero has a lot of luck
June 18th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Well he sure has the flair for the dramatic. Just can’t make it any easier on yourself can you JC…..
June 18th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
well mr. ump
finally calling the corners?
June 18th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Let’s get some freaking runs
June 18th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Miles. You’re back. You got a little angry yesterday. Someone post under your name?
The Dipsy
“Always striving to make the Phillies a better team”
June 18th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Romero hasnt been the same since coming back and being “clean.” Romero has imploded completely and has been largely useless. Their needs grow by the day.
They need help now. Starting, Relief…now. Like this weekend.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
@Dipsy: Yeah it wasn’t that that really bothered me though. Just general disrespect of everyone on here and just player bashing. I come on here to talk about the Phillies not fight with other posters and make ridiculous comments.
June 18th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Last 5 batters have struck out…Where is the discipline?
June 18th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Is that 5 KOs swinging a row by our top 5 hitters?
June 18th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
That was a quick inning
June 18th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Do you think player bashing is ever warranted?
The Dipsy
June 18th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
Jayson Werth’s strikeouts look like Howard’s but just from the right side
June 18th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Geoff you have been saying Romero was going to be ineffective since before he came back so I think you are a little biased. Let’s move on from the suspension please. His ERA is almost right at 1.00 so I don’t think that’s a problem. He’s always been wild so that’s nothing new.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Romero has not been the same since the first year with the team. I do not like him in our bullpen. Very hittable. God this is Toronto. Not the yankees or boston. They are average at best and will be out of the race soon enough…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Dipsy…Honestly, what does me or you bitching going to solve? What we say has NO relevance to what Charlie, Ruben, the players will do. Thats why im with Miles. Bashing players over and over is worthless because it solves NOTHING
June 18th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Clay needs a good outing… been on a downward trend lately.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
@Dipsy: I just think there is a difference between being critical of someone and saying that they are totally and completely useless. I also think player bashing should be put on hold for a year after someone wins a WS. You can’t be successful everyday in baseball.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
It’s because Romero is being used more against RH batters than the usual LH on LH situation.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
so much for that idea…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Ouch Pedro.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
Wow, Feliz.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
The whole team seems to be out of it. The Youkilis play where he stole 3rd on the drop by howard. The Scutaro play earlier, then the Rolen base running play. Rollins and Feliz errors.
The Phillies NEVER give those plays up, and for some reason are lately..
June 18th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Well this sucks.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Crappy starting pitching, disappointing offense, disastrous bullpen and now shoddy defense. Yup, all the ingredients for a sweep are now in place.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
BURNED-OUT. RED ALERT! The Pitching staff is in need of help…NOW.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Condrey sucks?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
take condrey out!!!!!!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Geoff, thanks for stating the obvious….over and over again..
June 18th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Scott Rolen reminds Philadelphia that they still haven’t replaced him.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Rolen is loving playing the Phillies LOL
June 18th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Yes, the WHOLE team is totally scuffling right now. Total meltdown this week.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
I don’t know what is happening with the Phils. They are just not playing good basesball. Ugh, what a bad series for them. Everything has been fallen apart lately.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
this game is over.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Wow Clay you are just awesome, 2 games you’ve now killed us in this series how bout you tell MLB Network all about it, bum.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
Do you need me to say it again just in case?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
This team needs pitching like the Eagles needed recievers! Better get it before its too late! Oh and Ive been reading everyones comments since i got back from Iraq and I have to agree with Dipsy Moyer is done he is no Randy Johnson or Nolan Ryan pitching at this age! My 5 year old son even says Moyer looks older then his grandad!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
The Little Guy, remember what I said before? Get ready for a ton of that right now!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Alright, lets go Orioles..
June 18th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
the 8th inning always seems to be a disaster every game lately…bases loaded and 0 outs – phils aint winning
June 18th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Our bullpen goes BOOOOMMMM…..This team is not going anywhere this year.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
We can all hold hands and pretend that everything is great since we won the World Series last year!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Fair enough. What should one say if they think that Jamie Moyer is not performing well or Jimmy Rollins has not hit all season, or blah blah? We’re Philadelphians. We boo. We rag. Its in our DNA. But I agree with you for the most part. I can’t critcize Moyer. He’s trying. I can criticize the management for keeping him in the rotation. I’m very unhappy with Moyer, Rollins, and Howard’s incessant wild swinging. I mean….you oughta be able to bitch sometimes if you want to…..ought’n you? Personally, I think your rag comment to constructive comment ratio should be about 1:6. I think that’s about right. I’m tellin ya, math explains everything.
The Dipsy
June 18th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
after watching these Jays, I can say their amazing start was no mere fluke…they’ll be in it with the Yanks and Sox, so no more delusions about Hallady in red pinstripes…not gonna happen
June 18th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
The seasons not over…come on man thats stupid!
Meanwhile, they need to release Jamie Moyer.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Where is the team that always played hard at home in 2008? Where are those guys that felt like it was their job to not let us down?
This team has a major focus problem at home this year…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Haha rivlez, good call.
I know their struggling, im not going to dwell on it, at all.
They need pitching, every team needs pitching except the 6 man rotation Red Sox.
So saying the Phillies need pitching isn’t some kind of new trend here.
The thing that gets me is their is no one that would be a perfect with here that is attainable.
Nice throw Mayberry.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
NICE THROW!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Even though he hasn’t given up all the runs, a lot of the fall for this one rest’s on Blanton’s shoulders. He has given us longer innings recently but in a game where we needed him to pitch deep into the game he does not and it results in the whole bullpen rotation starting at least one inning early. It smelled of bad news.
On a bright note, Mayberry makes up for his earlier mental mistake. Nice toss.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:13 pm
Mayberry is going to be the truth! I really like this kid
June 18th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
If there is anyone who should be upset right now it’s me. The Mets are a mess at this time. They are playing with half AAA team. Bullpen has been the strongest for them so far this season. The injuries just keep on piling on. Oh well.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
The Jays were swept by FLORIDA, but yet the Phillies can’t even win one game against them.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Big John Stud…
Terri, the Blue Jays are 5 games above .500 in the AL East… have a clue before you post something like that. They’re a very good baseball team.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Terri, all teams match up differently. Didn’t the Phillies get swept against Kansas City last year?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
phillies did have many chances to score a lot more runs though…especially in the 1st inning
June 18th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
rivelz, in 2007 the Royals took 2 of 3.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Mayberry leads off the 8th… would be nice to see him get on base and show off that speed.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Phil-bos always hit this rough patch. Not only will they NEVER release Moyer they won’t even bench him. Charlie went on record saying he never could. Moyer should do the class thing and void the last year of his contract and go chill in Souderton.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
So far Blue jays 22 runs to Phillies 9! Their not scoring and their pitching is just plain horrific
June 18th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Would you people stop crying and whining! We are on the verge of being swept by a worthy opponent we havent seen in quite awhile (not to mention we are slumping regardless of who we are playing). Its insane that most people say trade everyone and can the season after a rough stretch. What would some of you do in a relationship/job if things started to get bumpy? Divorce? Quit? I know what some will say too, “Im just passionate.” And when they turn it around and win say 7 out of 8, “I knew they would turn it around!” Grow up and learn how not to be such BANGWAGONS and balance your pride and loyalty! Lets PHUCKIN GO PHILS!! TURN IT AROUND NOW!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Your wrong Jacky poo. We are the world champs. You dont get swept in your ballpark by and average team with no pitching. We are not facing there best pitcher. You dont get swept by a bunch of nobodys. Like Rolen who looks like Mickey Mantle in this series. When its over he will become the bum he is.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
for the record, I’d like to say I never have said the season is over, or that we need to release anyone. all I’ve said is this GAME is over…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Explain to me why we are taking out Ruiz (.270) to put in Dobbs (.172)?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Or a strikeout…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Oh, OK, I understand.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
clay condrey needs serious rest…his last couple of outings werent too good..i know they didnt have many other options but condrey needs to sit out a couple games
June 18th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Greg Dobb HR!!!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Damn Dobbs must have heard what was being said…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Jeff…. Im not making excuses for losing to this team but I can just imagine where people like you were when they got swept by the Mets this time last year. “its over, were done, Screw Charlie!” Im just as mad as the next guy about these past 2 series but grow up and stop bad mouthing the whole team and saying its over and shit. Baby…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Tracey….thats why
June 18th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
Dobbs to Terri: That’s why b*tch… oh and because Ruiz bats RH and Dobbs bats LH…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Jack that was well said
June 18th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Hehe… kidding, no panties in bunches, please.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Jimmy has had a good game!!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
OK… Shane, do me proud…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
3 for 4 single, double 2 run homer, bb for Rollins.
The Angels came in here last year and ABSOLUTELY MANHANDLED the Phillies, anddddd whats happened the rest of last year?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:29 pm
When you make the money these boys do you go out there and play as hard as you can. they are not doing that. jack
June 18th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
The Angels finished with the best record in the MLB completely different
June 18th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Jeff, so your saying the Phillies haven’t played hard and didn’t want to win any games in this series?
Do me a favor..who do you get your pot from?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Dennis, swap the blue jays and the angels in their divisions. How much money you wanna bet they could put up a record simliar to the Angels???
The Jays play against.. the Yankees, Sox, Rays, and Os. doesn’t get much tougher..
June 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
your mom little guy. last night.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Jeff you’re retarded. Not even like a funny retarded just plain old retarded. You act like this is the Yankees payroll.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
THAT’S MY BOY!!!!! GO SHANE!!!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Shane!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
never use that word rivlez. you will burn for it….go back to taco bell
June 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
see I told you this game wasn’t over hahahahaha
June 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Shane!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Come on Chase!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Jeff…. If they would have come out and won this game 3-0 with no questions asked, would you still be questioning their “hard work”? Or would it be Happy Day? Just stop before you get all worked up and make bad decisions.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
last thing we need is another extra innings game so lets go offense!!!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
what does taco bell have to do with anything?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Yea this year! The Blue Jays always start off hot and then fade! You cant say the Blue Jays have a better team then the Angels who choked against Boston again last year! They by far were a better team then this years Blue Jays
June 18th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
(sigh!)
June 18th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Jeff, really? You said “your mom”.
How old are you? 10? Dude shut your mouth.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
IA tk, BP needs a rest. There is still the 9th inning with Chase and Ryan.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
WHY WOULD YOU STEAL WITH THE HEART OF YOUR ORDER UP TO BAT???
June 18th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
J-Roll to this site: Damn front runners… I told you I’d be back.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Nice Hit to tie the game, but Shane Victorino is one of the dumbest baseball players ive ever seen. you dont steal there.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
2nd time this year Victorino did that.
Remember 2 years ago in the opening series against the Braves he did that, but he was trying to steal 3rd?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Well then!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
whoa
June 18th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Yes, the radio put it best: “No way.”
June 18th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
AHAHAHAHAH
June 18th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
ohhhh yeah i forgot. our bullpen…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Our BP is killing us.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
Fitting way to finish off the sweep. Rod freaking Barajas.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
I cannot stand barajas. He couldn’t do this when he was in Philly?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
one bad pitch by madson…ugh
June 18th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
Rod F*ing Barajas…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
Barajas couldn’t do anything when he was in Philly. Now he’s 8 for 16 the last two years against the Phils.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
I almost miss lidge.,…almost.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Good job Madson….Yes, you are the closer that we have been waiting for..NOT
Stay in your 8th inning hole, YOU BUM
June 18th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
with the exception of the HR, that was an easy inning for madson…why did he have to throw that pitch?!?
June 18th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
we still have Utley, Howard, Werth.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
Phils will tie it this inning.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
OK, boys: here’s your chance to be a hero.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Phils will win this inning! Come on now, you three can totally redeem yourselves!!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
justin – and with 2 outs…could understand if there was 1 out to avoid the dp…hard not to like Shane but sometimes his baseball IQ is….well, raises a eyebrow or two
June 18th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
He may be the most irritating of all Phillie killers. He certainly did not do this as a Phillie and does not do it as a Jay – except against the Phils. It is as if he settles for mediocrity to save himself for confrontations with his former team and thereby to tantalize them.
Of course, it would be silly to assert that this is really true, but it does at least seem that way. Madson should have thrown off-speed to Barajas; that change-up would have had him shaking his head all the way back to the dugout. The bullpen really is showing its wear and tear; at least Madson limited the damage to a single run.
Now that they are behind by just one, they need to remind themselves not to try slugging their way back into the game. The previous inning saw good production: an opposite field (see what going the other way can do?) double by Rollins and a nice single up the middle by Victorino. That’s what they need – no clueless swinging at junk or letting cookies pass by.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
I hate this guy… effectively wild. Gotta be patient but you don’t know when it’s gonna go over for a strike… he’s got some fire.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
it was a bad choice by madson to throw that pitch on a 0-2 count but what can you do now…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
mg52..the most irritating Phillie killer is Jeff Conine.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
We’re in this position because Shane decided to run instead of allow Chase Utley the chance to bring him around.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
ryan swings at ball 3 and 4!! good job
June 18th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
griffin – wes helms, barajas, rolen..i hope this isn’t a pattern of ex- Phillies punishing us.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
I don’t have a problem with Vic trying to steal. A single from Chase wouldn’t have scored him from 1st, so he was trying to get into scoring position.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
yeah, I forgot about Helms.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Griffs right, if he didn’t steal it would of taken 2 hits to score, rather than 1 if he was safe.
If he steals, its a great play, Vics the smartest man alive.
If he’s out, Victorino is an idiot, stupid player, etc.
Agressive baserunning, i dig it.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
i understand vic in wanting to get in scoring position..not the smartest move though
June 18th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Swinging at the first pitch
June 18th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
First pitch swinging…out…boo.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Jayson Werth never swings at the first pitch….until now. Good AB.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Their it is, Wheels said it, “no doubles defense.”
June 18th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Smart baseball there J Werth,
June 18th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
you guys are hilarious when this team is losing
June 18th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
C’mon Feliz!!!! He is due…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Geoff…agreed. Total stupidity. You have 3-4-5 coming up and you get thrown out to end the inning? Again? Really? What a dope.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
FELIZ!!!!
OK Mayberry: Welcome to the big leagues. Show this Philly crowd what you’ve got…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Comeon Big John…you can come through.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
WOOHOO PETE HAPPY. JMJ BRINGS DOWN THE HOUSE!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
oof… That’s a painful end to a painful series.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Well, we were swept!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
SWEEP BABY..MY BLUE JAYS SWEPT YOUR SORRY TEAM. WATCH OUT RYAN IS UP. OH HE STRIKES OUT ALWAYS. MOYER SCARES ME MOMMMY
June 18th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
ugh
June 18th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Damn iT. That was feeble and weak. Crap.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Why anyone throws Howard anything other than low and away sliders is beyond me…..but, hope springs eternal, come through Mayberry!
June 18th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
What a crappy, crappy series. Swept by the mediocre Jays without Halladay.
Let’s go Orioles.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Are you guys still talking about Vic trying to steal with 2 outs? Gimme a break!
C’mon Big John Stud…
June 18th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
I dont know why yu guys give up to early on your team whne they won the WS just last year.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
Tough, better bounce back for the Os.
I’m pulling for the Orioesss tonight against the Metrapolitans.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
F.
June 18th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
I know we can’t win them all, but what a frustrating series for the Phils! I hope they play better against Baltimore
June 18th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
And if I’m in the mood for more torture, I can actually watch the game being replayed on CSN @ 7:00 which is exactly when I get home for work. With my gameday beer.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Phillies are a mediocore team this year, better luck when Halladay comes to play in the next series.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Can the Phils please go on the road now? Oh, and interleague can end anytime too…
June 18th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Little Guy, you’re right: Conine was up there. So were/are Vladimir Guerrero, Mike Lowell, Tim Redding, David Wright, Carlos Delgado, many others. But at least none of those guys had been on the Phils as so-so players and then came back to trouble them.
I don’t like the swing that Mayberry took there. I appreciate the effort he has put in and think that he has potential, but they called up a power bat when they probably should be aiming for a contact hitter. There are many lessons to learn from this subpar series, and while we have seen them emerge from many slumps and likely will see them emerge from this, it might be time to shake some things up. So far, it seems that all parts of their game are struggling.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
well said Blue jays fan
June 18th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
TMac’s upbeat attitude is getting on my nerves.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Savery should pitch in Reading this weekend? I know he pitched Monday this week.
June 18th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Little guy – although, throwing out shane is another Barajas moment arghhh!
June 18th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
