Gameday: Orioles (31-37) At Phillies (36-30)

Posted by Amanda Orr, Sun, June 21, 2009 12:37 PM

Tim is on vacation this weekend, so Amanda’s doing the gameday post and Brian is making the beer selection.

Baltimore Orioles (31-37) at Philadelphia Phillies (36-30)

Jeremy Guthrie (4-7, 5.42 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (4-2, 4.48 ERA)
Time: 1:35 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Cloudy, 71
TV:MyPHL 17
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The Phillies look to get back on track and avoid the sweep. They have the right guy on the mound to do that. Many times this season, Cole Hamels has had high pitch counts. He’ll have to work ahead in the count, and keep the pitch count down to work late into the game.

Jermey Guthrie is coming off a tough outing against the New York Mets. He allowed five runs (3 earned) in 6.1 innings, including a three run first inning.

Shane Victorino is batting .429 with a home run in seven at bats against Guthrie. Brian Roberts, the hero for the Orioles last night, is 2-2 with a home run off Cole Hamels.

The Phillies are once again without Ryan Howard, who still has a high fever. Greg Dobbs will get the start.

Your Gameday Beer: This afternoon we need something strong, so we’re going with Innis & Gunn from Scotland. This beer is aged in oak barrels previously used to mature bourbon – a novel concept. Think vanilla, toffee and orange aromas, with a malty, lightly oaked palate; soothing and warm in the finish. Have some pepperjack cheese fries with bacon with dad today.

Happy Father’s Day and Go Phillies!

  1. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Ok guys, we got a game with the Orioles today. And that only means one thing. Bad news for the Orioles!

  2. Morris Buttermaker Says:

That being said, with what has transpired this week, I think we can all agree, today’s drink is whisky straight up.

  3. Randall Says:

Baltimore fans, get the brooms out cuz there is going to be a sweep in philly, great game last night!!

  4. The Little Guy Says:

    8-3 Phils today, watch.

  5. PGD Says:

    good call on the whisky

  6. Georgie Says:

Little Guy, if you get that right again it’s going to creep me out a little.

  7. The Little Guy Says:

Haha seriously. If i do, im going to Atlantic City.

  8. The Little Guy Says:

After 1 inning, that was an abnormal amount of Curve Balls thrown by Colbert.

  9. Joshua Says:

Where did Hamels get this velocity

  10. The Little Guy Says:

    His mother.

  11. j reed Says:

little guy – i like seeing the curveball, i think he needs that third pitch, however i don’t like seeing our staff learning new pitches in the game…this is what spring training is for or if in your in the minors that’s when the work should be done….I was listening on the radio and didn’t see him pitch. How did the curve look?

  12. Joshua Says:

seems like everyone is trying to hit homeruns

  13. j reed Says:

    and his father

joshua- last few times out, Hamels was pitching in colder temps. – air denser, more drag, decelerates ball

  14. j reed Says:

joshua – this is the Phillies -we live and die by the long ball

  15. j reed Says:

    good boy chase

  16. Mike D. Says:

Morris, are you taking to my drinking games?

Can Jim Moyer replace Wheels? His commentary was better.

  17. Mike D. Says:

Cole seems to be using his breaking ball a lot more. Should be a good compliment to his fastball and changeup.

  18. Brian Michael Says:

Have no fear, your beer is here.

    Happy Father’s Day, dads!

  19. Tracey Says:

OK, guys, I know we’re winning, but we need more of a cushion the way the relief has been playing lately…

  20. Mike D. Says:

Agreed, Tracey. Anyone else notice the empty comment section after last night?

  21. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I think 2 shots of whiskey is more like it

  22. Tracey Says:

    Oh, that’s awful.

  23. Tracey Says:

Re comments last night: what I needed last night was some of that whiskey. I had a bit of whiskey-tango-foxtrot last night.

  24. Tracey Says:

Dobbs almost had a close-encounter with the camera there.

  25. Tracey Says:

Hamels is really having a good day. And he’s only at 77 pitches. Think we could get a CG out of him?

  26. Tracey Says:

    (sigh) I spoke too soon.

  27. Mike D. Says:

We might go into extras with our JV lineup out there.

  28. Tracey Says:

OK, we haven’t given up the lead yet, it’s time to get serious about hitting!

  29. Tracey Says:

Hey Shane! Thanks for taking my advice!

  30. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Its time for Charlie to get Rollins out of the lead off spot.

  31. Tracey Says:

    (sigh!) Better luck next inning…

  32. jeff Says:

do we ever think about stealing. shane has speed. i fear when baby ahole from the mets gets on. why cant we make things happen. watching stairs hit is like watching the guy at wawa make me my sub.

  33. Tracey Says:

We used to get a lot more stealing action. Rollins and Abreu used to get about 30 steals a year each.

  34. jeff Says:

mets are losing again. they suck. got we could be up by ten games. they are horrible.

  35. Tracey Says:

YES!!! NICE PLAY!!! That’s what you get for being greedy!

  36. Tracey Says:

@Jeff: The only reason I pay attention to the Mets games is because I want to know if their loser fans are going to be here harassing us. Not much chance of that when they’re getting whipped.

  37. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Mets are losing again where are the Philly haters today

  38. Tracey Says:

Wow. I didn’t think there was any way of getting that DP the way Utley fumbled it.

  39. Brian of CO Says:

Sadly, they are losing to a team with a winning record, and if we dont start hitting alot, we may get swept by a team with a losing record. Why is it whenever Cole Hamels pitches, the Offense looks horrible. The last week of baseball has been very depressing.

  40. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    Brian
Our offense has looked like crap for over a week

  41. Tracey Says:

Yes, that blonde fan at last night’s game in the World Series hoodie summed it all up

  42. Brian of CO Says:

I know, but I was trying to not get overly pissed off with how bad this team has looked lately. Thanks for the reminder Jeff of NoVa. LOL

  43. Tracey Says:

When the best hit of the week is a guy who took a few hours away from the hospital to PH, you know you’ve got an offense problem.

  44. joedad Says:

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  45. Brian of CO Says:

Dobbs who was hitting close to .180 a few weeks ago, not had a better batting average the Rollins.

  46. Brian of CO Says:

Now has a better average then rollins it should have said.

  47. Mike D. Says:

Ugh that commercial just depressed me even more. Come to think of it, I think I started seeing it when the Phillies started this awful homestand. So that’s a double whammy.

Three hits in seven innings against Jeremy Guthrie? Amazing.

With our JV offense out there, this will go to extras. With our bullpen and how they’ve been pitching, that’s if we’re lucky.

  48. Tracey Says:

You think we could roll Howard’s hospital bed out to the park for another big hit? :)

  49. Brian of CO Says:

Nevemind, it dropped again from .219 to .215 after his last at bat.

  50. Mike D. Says:

And after I said that, a leadoff double. Jee-ZUS!

  51. Tracey Says:

    Hamels is over 100 now.

  52. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Mets 5-4 on Rays in 6th

  53. Brian of CO Says:

Sorry to depress you even more Mike D, but seeing how this team witha lising record has 8 hits against our ACE, this wont be going to extra innings. We might be tied in the 9th, Manuel will put Madson in and they will end up beating us byt 3 in the 9th. :( Damn its not even 5 and I need a drink already.

  54. Tracey Says:

(sigh) and they take the lead.

  55. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    crap

  56. Mike D. Says:

Or they could just win it right now. F****!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  57. Brian of CO Says:

we cant even win a game at him, much less a series. We are going to get swept again.

  58. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

This freaking team better score some flipping runs in the bottom half of the inning

  59. Mike D. Says:

No. We will NOT get SWEPT BY THE ORIOLES! I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT WILL HAPPEN AND I REFUSE TO BELIEVE OUR BOYS WILL EVER LET THAT HAPPEN!

    NO! NO! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

  60. Brian of CO Says:

well looks like only 1 game up now. Thanks Madson for giving up 2 freaking homers and a single in the 9th yesterday.

  61. Tracey Says:

WHEW! OK, not too much damage, but we really need to get hitting.

  62. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Lets call up Howard and get his butt out here to help us LOL

  63. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    6-5 Rays

  64. Brian of CO Says:

I will gladly buy everyone on here a beer next time Im in Philly if somehow this supposed first place defending WS champs decide to beat this last place losing record team.

  65. Brian of CO Says:

Thank you for the slight “ray” of hope Jeff of NoVa. Ok bad joke, but at least the mets are also losing.

  66. Brian of CO Says:

Wonder if Victorino can get another hit with 2 outs?

  67. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

bad call unless he is out of the basepath

  68. Mike D. Says:

Go Charlie! At least someone cares!

  69. Andrew Says:

Its about time the old man sroked out.
    Now win some games.

  70. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    it should be tied now

  71. Ed R. Says:

Second time in a week that this team could potentially lose two games because of blow calls. WTF? It’s one thing to play poorly and lose, that I can stomach. But having a chance to win taken from you…garbage.

  72. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I hate the umps they have been just as bad as the Phils have been in this homestand

  73. j reed Says:

wow that blown call…that ump needs to be suspended for a few games like NFL offcials are when they blow calls

  74. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    well not looking good

  75. boxage Says:

that was a grown man move by jimmy and he got robbed

  76. Phan in TN Says:

still shaking my head on that blown call

  77. Ed R. Says:

The problem is baseball umps are not held accountable like NFL refs. Mostly because they ump 162 games so the MLB sees it as, mistakes will be made with that amount of games and calls being made but with the NFL, each bad call can have a drastic effect on a teams record. But I agree, something should be done about this crap. Especially the home run call that was not reviewed when replay is in the stadium. This one though, I just don’t understand how you can blow that call…he was 5 feet away and had a perfect view, the play was coming towards him and not away from him. No one was in his way, nothing and he still blew it.

  78. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

yeah well when you are playing this poorly you are not going to get calls like that go your way

  79. j reed Says:

oh I forgot Budd Selig is comissioner…he’s to busy whining about how NFL gets a few pass while MLB doesn’t…well maybe if he grew a pair like actually reprimanding umpires for a start

  80. Tracey Says:

    oof…

  81. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Well at least the Mets are getting beat

  82. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

bases loaded 2 outs Burrell is pinch hitting

  83. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

and they have a rain delay LOL

  84. Tracey Says:

    argh. Stairs got robbed.

  85. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I bet if they had a keg at the end of the first base line Stairs would have beaten that out

  86. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    my god Werthless

  87. Tracey Says:

OK Mayberry: Your chance to be a hero

  88. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

so impatient swinging at ball 4

  89. Tracey Says:

    Ugh. What an awful loss.

  90. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    nope so sad

  91. j reed Says:

Ed R. – yeah with 162 games things play out in the wash, but I think that playing everyday and the subsquent short memory allows mounting problems to go unaddressed. Ultimately it is what keeps the game from evolving …. (not that I think they play to many games), but …oh crap! Time to tear up the clubhouse

  92. Tracey Says:

One of the strongest hitting teams in baseball, and they get only one solo homer in 9 innings against the Orioles??? Awful…

  93. Kimmy Says:

well thank you to Cole for lasting a good 8 for us! our ‘pen is all too grateful for the rest, I’m sure. too bad our O couldn’t do their jobs today……. I live in the DC area and I’m embarassed that I have to face fans of “Birdland” tomorrow. ugh…..LET’S GET IT TOGETHER PHILLIES!! YOU ARE WFC!!!!

  94. Greg V. Says:

I’m done trying to search for words with these game. Every game has made me more angry and more upset. What in the hell is going on here?

  95. Rich Says:

This team is a disgrace. The fans have been too kind. 10 blown saves and a leadoff hitter who should be playing in the special olympics.

  96. justin Says:

    one word….PATHETIC

  97. j reed Says:

protest the game and make sure the ump is suspended…After the crap Selig pulled during the WS its the least he could do. Supposedly there’s a command center where every game is viewed…yeah by chimps cause nothing ever is done.

  98. Tracey Says:

(I really hate that commercial… stealing pennies from children to buy a burrito?)

  99. jeff Says:

well i give up on this season like this team has. they are going nowhere. utley looks pathetic. werth swings at pitches inside on a 3-1 count. how can you not score more then 1 run against a pathetic pitching staff.

  100. Rich Says:

The umpires are not to blame…WE SUCK!

  101. Rich Says:

We just made Guthrie look like Greg Maddux

  102. Tracey Says:

They just don’t seem to take these Interleague games seriously. They had the same problem last year. That’s why I thought they were in trouble for the WS.

  103. j reed Says:

yeah, i thought this team wide batting slump might have been an anomaly last year but, to see it again, well it’s a pattern and not a matter of things not going our way…”that’s baseball” attitude is simply not an adequate way to describe the cumulative effects of poor, undiscilplined play….and enough of this pop psychology by media commentators

  104. Amazin Mets Says:

Alright yes the Mets are losing. But even if we lose we still are only 2 games back of you guys. Wow, the Phillies are pathetic!!! You guys go 1-8 on your 9 game homestead. You lost two out of three to the Red Sox and then you get swept by the BLUE JAYS AND ORIOLES!!!!!!!!! wow, even the nationals are doing better than you. They atleast won once against the O’s and won two against the Jays. now you guys go on a road trip to TB, Toronto and Atlanta. Expect your road record to melt down as well. Wow bad luck for you. The Dobbs foul in opener vs boston. then the 5 runs bastardo allows in first inning before rain delay and then 11-6 loss. Then you came back vs the sox to win. Then blue jays game. Your closer madson blows a 3-2 lead by walking in tying run and then you allow 5 runs in extras. Then get mowed down by Scott Richmond. and then wow ROD BARAGAS HOMERS OFF MADSON IN NINTH to win. Then O’s kill you 7-2. then yesterday. 5-3 lead to ninth after classic howard homer. but zaun homers and roberts on final strike homers. Then today hamels pitches great but you guys O stinks it up. Phillies now 36-31. 23-9 on road and 13-22 at home. 2-8 in past 10. 6 game losing streak. 1-8 on the 9 game homestead. Not to mention your so closer madson is now 2-3 with a 3.06 era and only 4 saves with 3 blown saves. PATHETIC THE PHILLIES ARE. NOW the braves and marlins and we the amazin mets have caught up. myers, lidge, eyre, ibanez on dl with howard sick. good luck in WS rematch in tb. Get swept by O’s and now for Rays turn. PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

  105. PGD Says:

you keep saying how pathetic the phils are, what does that mean for your mets who actually have to win to take over first, and have only made up 2 games in the east while the phillies have gone 1-8

  106. Greg V. Says:

dude don’t you Mets fans have anything better to do than rant on a Phillies blog? Which one of you morons lost your helmet?

  107. j reed Says:

baseball is filled with crap psychology which sabrmetrics has done well to weed out…unfortuanately our line-up buys into superstition like “hitting is contagious”. Sometime but always, you have to play with your and not rely on your talent

  108. j reed Says:

baseball is filled with crap psychology which sabrmetrics has done well to weed out…unfortuanately our line-up buys into superstition like “hitting is contagious”. Sometime but always, you have to play with your head and not rely on your talent to take you through the rough patches

  109. Az Mike Says:

THIS TEAM WILL NOT MAKE THE PLAYOFFS! The team that was never out of it earlier in the year, no matter how far behind they were HAS LOST IT’S SWAGGER. Cole did his best, but it now takes a shutout for this team to win. WFC now changed to BFD.

  110. Amazin Mets Says:

Who cares. atleast we’ve made up some games. you guys got swept by the orioles. Let me tell you this! The 2009 Phillies are the 2008 Mets. Early division lead, lots of blown saves, bullpen sucks, certain players suck, leadoff sucks, injuries. In the end we missed the playoffs. That’ll be you guys while the 2009 celebrate the 2009 WS

  111. Amazin Mets Says:

That’ll be you guys while the 2009 mets celebrate the 2009 WS

  112. PGD Says:

ahhahaha you think the mets are going to win it this year, please you should get on a mets blog and worry about your own team since they cant win, you would like to think the phillies will choke like the mets are so good at but they still have to do it and in the meantime the phils are still the world champs until dethroned

  113. Runshouse Says:

10 Blown saves? Bleh, talk when they blow 27.

  114. Trout Boy Says:

Odds Phils make the playoffs: 35% right now
Odds Phils are a .500 ballclub: 80% right now

They are just a bad team this year. Finding ways to lose. No bench. No bullpen. Hope this homestand brought some of the wild-eyed optimist back to this planet. Heard one of the tools on WIP say a couple of weeks ago, how the Phils would win the division by 10-12 games. I’ve read some similar comments by posters on here. I hope this trainwreck (how the eff do you go 1-8 on a 9 game HOMESTAND???) has knocked some of the cockiness out of the fans. Now, if only it would have the same effect on the team! Pathetic state of affairs.
New game I saw online this morning called “Where’s Rueben”? It’s about a little squirrely guy who has disappeared and is not doing anything to help his club. No one can find him.
And one more thing while I’m at it: it is virtually impossible to watch a game on TV with Wheels and TMac. Their cheery outlook on things just reeks of “company shill”, which they both are. God, I was screaming for them to STFU about 10 different times today. They are both brutal. God, do I miss HK.

  115. mg52 Says:

These hitting slumps are just not okay. They have gone through it in the past, yes, especially against the American League. That does not mean that they will be clutch again for the rest of the year. I certainly hope for it, but we cannot know that this year will be like the last two. It is one thing to have a spell of offensive inconsistency. It is another to be swept at home by one decent team and one weak one – with two losses against a strong opponent thrown in. Manuel does not have to rip apart furniture or shove players into lockers, but he does have to have a civil but firm discussion with the players about how frazzled pitching and moribund offense don’t always fix themselves, but instead need hands-on repair.
A contending team will have its bad times, but will almost never be swept by a last-place team at home. That is just hard to imagine. The fundamentals are so important: singles, doubles, sac bunts, hit-and-runs, stolen bases…in short, smart, basic play. If a pitcher is in good shape, then he should probably remain on the mound; pitch counts don’t even have to dictate decisions all the time. If the current complement cannot adjust to this style of play, then it might be time to import players – from other clubs or from the farm – who can.

  116. mg52 Says:

Despite all this, I love the Phillies and always will.

  117. The Dipsy Says:

A few points I’d like to put out there:

    1) In the post season last year the Phils did something that hadn’t all last season. Take pitches and work pitchers. Teams like the Red Sox understand that the sooner you get into into the other teams bullpen, which will probably be full of shitty pitchers, the better off you’ll be. Please Phillies….start to do this.

    2) Kyle Drabek is killing it in Reading. In 1982 or 83, the Mets brought up a promising pitcher from single A. His name was Dwight Gooden. Drabek is no Gooden but if his stuff is that wicked then think about bringing him up. Why not? Cuz you’ll ruin him? It’ll hurt his feeling he’ll get hit around sometimes? He’s not a race horse. Then, move Bastardo to the pen and you’ve got a serious upgrade there.

Just blueskying it a little here.

    The Dipsy

  118. The Dipsy Says:

My dream pitching staff for Aug 1 2009

    SP – Hamels
SP- Lee (or a reasonable facsimile)
    SP- Blanton
    SP- Happ
    SP- Drabek

    RP- Condrey
    RP- Durbin
    RP- Park
    RP- Bastardo
    RP- Madson
    RP- Romero
    RP- Lidge

Taschner will have been given his unconditional release. Moyer will be traded to a contender who thinks he can turn it on for them down the stretch. The Phils will get a midlevel prospect. Someone like our Joe Savery or Jason Donald.

    The Dipsy

  119. The Dipsy Says:

Whoops. Forgot Scott Eyre. Which isn’t hard to do by the way.

    The Dispy

  120. Go O's Says:

Get your brooms out O’s fans for the sweep of the phillies, we swept philly and give them ur brooms so they can clean up filthadelpia. Nice stadium, went there sat. If the o’s were in the NL east, we’d be in first place right now after winning all the series vs. ur division.

  121. JeffS Says:

I am so with Dipsy, except Drabek (maybe not until next year) will be ahead of Happ (who I love and is a great person).
