Gameday: Phillies (37-32) At Rays (38-35)

Posted by Amanda Orr, Thu, June 25, 2009 06:00 PM

Philadelphia Phillies (37-32) at Tampa Bay Rays (38-35)

Antonio Bastardo (2-2, 5.21 ERA) vs. Andy Sonnanstine (5-7, 6.60 ERA)
Time: 7:08 p.m at Tropicana Field
Weather: Dome
TV: Comcast Sportsnet, MLB Network
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The Phillies will send Antonio Bastardo on the mound for the rubber-match against the Rays. Like the World Series, the Phillies took game one, and the Rays took game two. The only difference is that the series is still in Tampa, which may not be a bad thing with most of the Phillies success coming away from Citizens Bank Park.

In his outing against the Baltimore Orioles, Bastardo was roughed up in the second inning, but he settled down. He was effective throwing 73 of 108 pitches for strikes. The rookie pitched a career high seven innings in his effort against the Orioles.

In the World Series, Sonnanstine earned the loss in game four. In four innings, he allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks. Ryan Howard homered off him.

Sonnanstine’s numbers may not be impressive, but he has pitched better in his last two starts. He was effective against the Mets in last start, however a three run home run hurt him. It also notable that he is 12-9 with a 5.01 ERA at Tropicana Field.

Charlie Manuel has benched Jimmy Rollins for tonight’s and Friday’s game. Manuel says Rollins will return to the leadoff spot when he returns, however he’ll ride the pine for the next two days.

Tonights Lineup: Victorino (CF)/ Dobbs (1B)/ Utley (2B)/ Howard (DH)/ Werth (RF)/ Stairs (LF)/ Feliz (3B)/ Bruntlett (SS)/ Ruiz (C).

Your Gameday Beer:The Phils are still in Florida so we’ll go with another local beer. Landshark is brewed by Anheuser Busch and the new king of Florida, Jimmy Buffet. It seems to be a direct competitor to Corona – the beers look similar in appearance and are really only palatable when they’re ice cold and you’re burning in the sun. So if you’re lucky enough to be in that climate, have some spicy Thai food tonight. -By Brian

  1. Miles Says:

It really pains me that Bruntlett has to step in to take the place of a slumping Rollins and his batting average is almost 60 points lower than Rollins. Unbelievable. I guess the only other option is Donald and he’s on the DL. It’s just frustrating.

  2. cm Says:

    why isn’t mayberry playing tonight??

  3. I Care To Much Says:

This team has no direction. First off I agree with benching Rollins. Bruntlett is just bad. Bring one of the kids up. Now you have Bruntlett, Feliz, Ruiz.. all outs at the bottom. Stairs is pathetic starting. Get Mayberry in there. This kid can hit. I hope Charlie loses his job..

  4. Miles Says:

cm I don’t think they like Mayberry playing against righties. I can’t really blame them considering that he hasn’t had the best swings off of them so far, but obviously they are going to have to let him get a few swings off of them. Sonnanstine isn’t that tough of a righty, though. Either way I like having him off the bench to pinch run or come in for defense.

  5. Nick S Says:

I know it is not related to baseball, but still Michael Jackson dies at 50 in LA Hospital

  6. Manny Says:

Thank you, Charlie Manuel. Benching J-out was the best choice.

  7. Nick S Says:

Mets won 3-2 today, so they are currently 1 game back of Phillies.

Yes howard!! 2-0 Phillies on Howards double

  8. Miles Says:

@ “I care to(o) much”….i assume you are gonna take over as manager? We don’t have anyone to bring up to play short with Donald hurt and Mayberry has crushed lefties but that’s it. He doesn’t exactly have a lot to work with right now.

  9. cm Says:

    woah stairs!!

  10. Miles Says:

Nice Stairs! It’s a good thing that Charlie didn’t lose his job “I care to much”. I guess he just got lucky since Stairs is “pathetic as a starter”.

  11. Nick S Says:

    Stairs double!!! 3-0 Phillies

  12. Chase Says:

    All right Feliz!

  13. Nick S Says:

    Feliz delivers!!!! 4-0 Phillies.

I guess Feliz isn’t an automatic out hey “I Care Too Much”

  14. Nick S Says:

4 run lead for Bastardo heading to bottom of first

  15. Manny Says:

This is good. This is good.

    Go Bastardo!!

  16. I Care To Much Says:

miles baby,,stairs is pathetic as a starter. luckkkky..i guess its good he benched rollins for bruntlett too. charlie couldnt manage turkey at a farm. last year. great hitting, pitching and daffey..

  17. Miles Says:

By everyone’s Moyer logic from the other night Bastardo should be unhittable since he can attack the strike zone with the early runs on the board. Oh wait, he just walked Upton.

  18. Miles Says:

Whatever you say “Care to much”….you are just making yourself sound like an idiot by trashing the defending WFC manager….for no apparent reason. And as you can see earlier, I also echoed the frustration of only having Bruntlett as an option to fill in, but we really do have no other options unless you want to bring Cairo back up. And I don’t think everyone is real pumped about that.

  19. Manny Says:

Nice job by Bruntlett!! See… he’s good defensively too!

  20. Nick S Says:

Burrell batting 3rd today after solid game yesterday

  21. Miles Says:

I thought we got away with one there but it looks like Beard either made the tag or at least got him when he came off the base.

  22. Miles Says:

Hahaha Smoltz getting rocked by the Nads in his first start for the BoSox…gotta love it

  23. Manny Says:

Yup, Upton looked out on the replay.

  24. Nick S Says:

4-1 now. Burrell scores the run.

  25. Miles Says:

Ahh Antonio….JWerth has gotta make a better play on that though. Burrell scoring from first? Cmon.

  26. Manny Says:

Cmon Bastardo I wanna see that nasty changeup you’re supposed to have

  27. Miles Says:

    Good lord….

  28. cm Says:

    f-ing bastardo!!!!!!!! wtf??????????

  29. I Care To Much Says:

good bastardo only 26 pitches so far..IN THE FIRST. GO BACK TO AAA

  30. Ed R. Says:

And this is why successful MLB pitchers need more than one friggin pitch.

  31. Manny Says:

    Uh oh

  32. Jeff Says:

    Gives the lead right back

  33. Manny Says:

Really small strike zone by the ump

  34. cm Says:

bastardo cannot get away with throwing fastball after fastball especially to this team!! but the only good thing is that usually he has only 1 bad inning and then most of the time gets under control after that, so hopefully this was his bad inning!

  35. Miles Says:

He looks unbelievably uncomfortable out there…I have no idea what he’s doing.

By the way, I just wanted to point out to Geoff and others who were trying to discredit Moyer’s work the other night because he had a big lead to work with that you can still give runs back right away, as Bastardo is showing us.

  36. Jeff Says:

can they take him out. he is aweful. 4-4

  37. Nick S Says:

Since Bastardo has been called up, you can see he throws alot of pitches in one inning and he throws lots of balls. To be honest, in the future I think Bastardo will be a reliever. See Zobrist homers 4-0 Phillies lead is now 4-3. 2B Ben Zobrist having career year. 16HRS and 44RBI. Utley = 16HRS and 49RBI. Not comparing but just telling Zobrist having great year. We should honestly trade Bastardo in upcoming trade deadline. 4-3 Phillies after 1.

  38. Jason B Says:

Bastardo does not belong in the starting rotation. That’s all.

  39. Miles Says:

Cmon Chooch that was a hanger.

  40. Ed R. Says:

Maybe its not just Rollins, maybe our lead off hitters are instructed to swing on the 2nd pitch?

  41. jeff Says:

who would take bistardo’s spot in rotation?

  42. Miles Says:

Nick we can’t overreact to bad starts by saying we need to trade him. I think he would be great to hang onto. Just remember that he is not supposed to major league ready yet so really this isn’t that surprising. We just had a need and he was pitching the best at the time.

  43. Nick S Says:

Vic not faring well YET in leadoff postion.

  44. Griffin Says:

Antonio Bastardo is not a major league pitcher. He has a 30% groundball rate (the ML average is around 40%) and he does not have control over his secondary pitches.

Keeping him in the rotation at this point is just giving away games.

  45. Nick S Says:

1-2-3 Phillies go down. 2 called 3rd strikes.

  46. cm Says:

i really hope bastardo either starts throwing his other pitches or gets better location on his fastball because this team can hit pretty well

  47. Miles Says:

Haha we have to get someone else in there fast, that was almost laughable there

  48. Ed R. Says:

the worst part is we have no one to bring up. No one.

  49. Nick S Says:

Wow, first pitch homer. 4-0 lead has officialy evaporated

  50. cm Says:

    mayberry would have caught that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  51. Ed R. Says:

CM it has nothing to do with location and everything to do with the fact that he has one pitch.

  52. Jeff Says:

this kid is aweful. needs more time. you are not winning with him in your rotation.

  53. jeff Says:

you would think a 4 run lead would last a little longer

  54. Paul Says:

I guess Bastard doesn’t like playing with a nice lead. I think it’s becoming obvious that he isn’t ready for the big time yet.

  55. Andrew Says:

OK how many runs given up is enough? 7 ? 10?

    Go get him already

We scored 4. so try to keep it close

  56. Park Fan Says:

Let’s give Park another try… he has been great lately!

  57. Manny Says:

Go talk to the guy Chooch!

  58. ll Says:

i hope park is available because we are def. going to need him soon… man bastardo couldn’t have at least waited a couple innings to give those runs back – gotta do it in the first

  59. Myers' Liars Says:

0 movement on the fastball, combined with a mediocre breaking pitch means happy hitters.

This kid is not cut out for the majors yet. he could be a solid reliever, or future starter, but is nowhere near a successful starting pitcher in the big leagues.

I like Oswalt, Lee, or Halladay, in no particular order.

  60. Miles Says:

I didn’t even have time to enjoy our lead….I’m depressed.

  61. ll Says:

i think 2 innings is enough for bastardo – they need to get him out before the lead starts to get too much

  62. Jeff Says:

great job charlie leaving him in. GAME OVER.

  63. Andrew Says:

The mess won again today too. the only team that every year thier big “name” players get hurt and the team surges. Beltran is a cancer if he hit .600 I would not want him on my team. The mets are with him hurt.

  64. Jason B Says:

Rays take the lead. Get this Bastard out of the game. This sucks.

  65. Myers' Liars Says:

I cant bear to see Bastardo start another game.
Ruben needs to make some moves now if he wants to both develop Bastardo in the minors, and still have potential to do damage in the latter half of the season.
6 runs in 2 innings is unacceptable.

  66. Jeff Says:

50 pitches so far in two innings. get drabek up. he cant do worst.

  67. Tracey Says:

FINALLY! OK, now we need some bat action…

  68. Miles Says:

So at this point you have to assume they can’t throw Bastardo out there again. That basically means that we spot start someone else (Carrasco, Chacin?) or make a trade before his next start. This is the worst that one of our guys has gotten shelled this year. Even when Park was bad in games it was mostly just walks and singles, not doubles and bombs like Bastardo is serving up.

  69. ll Says:

bastardo better not be in the 3rd. there’s no way he will hold the game at 6 runs if he goes back out there. i

  70. Nick S Says:

Bottom of 2nd Inning: Homer, Double, Single, Pop Out, Double, Ground Out, Strikeout

Phillies scored 4 in the first, 0 in the second
Rays scored 3 in the first, 3 in the second

After 2 innings, Rays lead 6-3. Bastardo no clean inning yet

  71. Manny Says:

It’s fine… you pretty much HAD to keep him at least to finish the 2nd inning… especially since he’s shown that he can have a really bad inning, and then settle down.

I wonder why he doesn’t throw his secondary stuff… I thought his changeup was good.

We’re only down by 2… and we can hit their pitcher too.

  72. Miles Says:

Jeff the game is not over. It’s the third inning. And Sonnanstine has been anything but effective this year. Bastardo is hopefully done for the day and whoever else is coming in will surely do a better job. We will hang around in this one. Again, its the third inning. Ahhhh nice rip big poppa, damn.

  73. Manny Says:

Ugh I thought that was a dinger by the big man

  74. Tracey Says:

Yeah, I thought that was out. We needed it to be out.

  75. Tracey Says:

    Bleh.

  76. ll Says:

he’s back! wow. this will be great

  77. Nick S Says:

    Sonnanstine on his game now

Gonna go watch NBA draft. can’t watch Phillies for time being.

  78. Manny Says:

    Nice K by Bastardo

  79. Miles Says:

Nick…Sonnanstine does not have a “game” to be on. Howard ripped the crap out of that ball and he walked Werth on some brutal pitches. We could explode for four more at any time against this guy.

  80. Manny Says:

… And this is why you leave Bastardo in the game!

  81. ll Says:

at least the phillies are showing they can hit off of sonnastine, so that’s encouraging…

  82. Manny Says:

I like having Bruntlett starting this game and the next, even if he doesn’t do much at the plate… at least he’ll get some at-bats and perhaps that’ll lead to better pinch-hitting.

  83. Paul Says:

I think it’s time to part ways with Bruntlett, what is he bringing to the team?!

  84. Manny Says:

Chooch’s avg is dropping way too fast :(

  85. ll Says:

i know its early in the game still, but im just hoping bastardo’s bad innings won’t cost us the game because in his last start it did

  86. Miles Says:

    Whew….thought that was 8-4

  87. Miles Says:

I’m almost surprised when he gets people out with the fastball.

  88. Miles Says:

Did anyone else just see that Elvis Burrell has a world series ring collar? I don’t know if I find that funny or upsetting….

  89. Manny Says:

    Damn it… ANOTHER injury?

  90. Jeff Says:

WHO GOT HURT?????They need to revamp this staff. Hamels, Moyer, Blanton are fine. Get Happ and Bastardo out.

  91. Miles Says:

I hope it’s not an injury because that would make us look even more desperate for a starter AND he wouldn’t be as valuable in a trade if another team had wanted him. He very easily could have just wanted to get out of there though. His body language was just very poor tonight so he either had something bugging him or he just was not focused for tonight’s start.

  92. cxl72 Says:

Drabek was dealing thru 5 innings but got roughed up in the 6th. Bastardo will be fading into obscurity soon.

  93. Miles Says:

What’s wrong with Happ, Jeff? He is certainly better than the best alternative….

  94. Tracey Says:

@Miles: Yes, World Series collar tag for Elvis.

Well, maybe now we can put this ugliness behind us and score some runs…

  95. Miles Says:

Shane works the count and hits a ball hard with nothing to show for it. That sort of shows how its goin for us huh?

  96. DJ Says:

This team effin strikes out too much! its sickening!

  97. Miles Says:

Ok I’m officially frustrated now. There is no reason we shouldn’t be able to score at least 2-3 runs more against this guy.

  98. Manny Says:

What’s the deal with those space man masks and the cowbell? A little over the top eh.

  99. Miles Says:

    This ump is clueless btw.

  100. ToniBastard Says:

    sorry I sucked guys

  101. Miles Says:

What an absolute JOKE of a stadium. People say crap about our stadium being too small….well at least its a legitimate field and MLB ballpark. You won’t see a bounce like that in CBP. It will probably cost us two or three runs….

  102. cxl72 Says:

Cmon Durbin. Navarro is barely a viable MLB player.

  103. Andrew Says:

Just fall behind by 10 so I can watch Geraldos special on Michael Jackson and not flip back to this torture.

  104. Runshouse Says:

    WAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!

  105. Tracey Says:

WHEW! But really, I could do with less of these exciting innings….

  106. DJ Says:

    Good Job Durbin!

  107. Miles Says:

Way to get out of it Durbs…..can we please respond. I’m begging.

  108. Georgie Says:

Miles, that’s got to be the ugliest stadium I’ve ever seen, no wonder no one shows up.

  109. cxl72 Says:

That at bat was so bad he looked like he was a Phillie LOL. Cmon Phils, let gets a few hits!!

  110. Dave Says:

Isn’t it about time for Werth’s solo shot of the day?

  111. cxl72 Says:

At least the 2009 Phils don’t strand a ton of guys on base offensively.

  112. DJ Says:

    Whew werth jus got lucky

  113. Tracey Says:

YES!!! I’ll take some offense however I can get it!

  114. cxl72 Says:

What a break. What a break. Have to do something here.

  115. Tracey Says:

They counted that as a hit? That’s generous. Looked like an easy double-play to me.

  116. Tracey Says:

    Oh good freaking grief.

  117. Manny Says:

    WTF WAS FELIZ DOING THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  118. Keith Says:

    oops Feliz

  119. Miles Says:

    Did that really just happen

  120. Mets Says:

    haha double playyyyyyyyyyyyy

  121. Tracey Says:

OK, am I the only one who is bothered by this awful commercial where a guy steals pennies from everyone, including little kids, to get a burrito?

  122. Griffin Says:

You’ve got to be kidding me

  123. cxl72 Says:

If Stairs was like Mark Teixera (and a robot) he would have run top speed there. Oooooooooooooooh Pedro, I will choose to remember your game winning RBI against the Rays in the WS.

  124. Tracey Says:

Mets: Let us harass our own team. We’re much better at it; we have more experience.

  125. Miles Says:

    Well that was Churchesque….

  126. Eli Says:

AHHAHAHAHHAA We take first. Goodbye Phillies. Hello Mets 2009 World Champs and Florida marlins Wildcard

  127. Tracey Says:

@cxl: Yeah, that’s a Matt Stairs running error too.

  128. Mark Says:

this team is so not displined. you dont know how many outs, and yes maybe stairs could hustle a little,.

  129. Corinne Says:

    Seriously?!

Did Pedro lose the ball in the dome?

  130. Tracey Says:

Eli: You count about as well as Feliz does. Even if we lose, we’re still half a game ahead of you. And there are three more innings in this game.

  131. Andrew Says:

    I just vomited.
does it have to be something every game?
Updating Jermaine Jackson just did a press conference about MJ.

  132. Eli Says:

    HAHAHHAHAHHA THIS IS PRICELESS

  133. Tracey Says:

@Corinne: Pedro apparently thought there were two outs, and didn’t think he had to tag up. Either it would be caught (third out) or it would be dropped (no need to tag).

  134. Manny Says:

I remember a very similar play with Pedro last season…

  135. phan1 Says:

Eli–just in case you forgot: it’s June, not September.

  136. Eli Says:

Carma, this is carma for stealing 2007 and 2008 from us

  137. Tracey Says:

No wonder you think the Mets are going to win, Eli. You are so ignorant of baseball that you can’t tell the difference between a whole game and a half game.

  138. DJ Says:

Eli you little B1tch it is June! Priceless is your f@cking team blowing leads 2 years in a row and US yea US winning the WFC!

  139. Tracey Says:

Hear, hear, DJ. Wait until Choketember.

  140. Andrew Says:

Put a little C on utleys chest and let him get on these guys asses. Obviously the coaching staff isnt doing it.

  141. Eli Says:

We can beat anyone right now. We beat the Cardinals and plan to beat the Yankees. This is so great. We have Santana and K-Roid. Our team is AAA level and beating everyone.

  142. DJ Says:

Its Karma you ignorant @sshole! Learn how to spell!

  143. ll Says:

wtf is the umpire? damn he must have something against the phillies.

i love how sonnastine got all those strike 3 called and both off durbin’s last pitches were strikes

  144. phan1 Says:

and what’s carma? Last time I checked, it was karma. You spell like a 12 year old. Oh wait, you probably are one.

  145. Dan Says:

Leave Eli alone, he is defending our honor. We are trolling all the Phillies sites as you did with us when Castillo dropped the ball.

  146. Manny Says:

I’m pretty impressed with Stairs’ arm…

  147. Myers' Liars Says:

    Eli,
Your maturity level that you display leads me to believe that you are under the age of 21. That being said, maybe you should do something productive with your time, perhaps de-virginizing yourself. You seem to spend aimless days and hours waiting to scold the Phillies fans here who actually have something productive to say.
    Congratulations,
You, like the Mets, are destined for failure.

  148. Eli Says:

Phan1 you are a big schmuck

  149. Tracey Says:

“As you did”? Sir, I never once in my life trolled a Mets site. I barely pay any attention to the score in the Mets games, let alone who drops what. And the fact that there are a couple of @ssholes out there who claim to be Phillies fans doesn’t give you the right to be an @sshole to people who never did anything to you.

  150. Eli Says:

    Let’s go Mets!

  151. A.J. Says:

    I see Eli is back.

  152. Miles Says:

I don’t like this move….I would have let Durbin fight out of it.

  153. DJ Says:

Why do the Rays innings last so long and ours are so quick! Patience maybe

  154. cxl72 Says:

aaargh, at least the cow bell volume is down from last night.

  155. DJ Says:

Well its looking like 8 out of 9 and 10 out of 12! Somethings gotta give Seriously!

  156. Tracey Says:

@DJ: Yeah, we keep swinging for the rafters on the first pitch. Makes for short ABs.

  157. Manny Says:

    Damn….

  158. DJ Says:

Man at least Vic made a good stop and great throw! Damn this is frustrating

  159. Tracey Says:

(sigh) Well, the Phils managed to get 6 runs from this team in one inning a couple of nights ago. They’ll just have to do it again.

  160. A.J. Says:

No one can blame Jimmy tonight. Not sure what the heck is going on now

  161. cxl72 Says:

    things im not proud of:

    1) the 2009 phillies
    2) my absolute hatred of the mets and their fans
    3) my love of patrick swayze movies

  162. Andrew Says:

The mets arent even a threat. They arent even players at the trade deadline. The issue is we suck. Everyone be happy the NL least sucks. Because we will still be in first for awhile. The mental mistakes are highly pissing me off.

  163. Mets Says:

Can I get a score on your game?

  164. Terri Says:

We are going to be in second place by the weekend, maybe that will wake this team up. They have been playing bad baseball for about 2 week now.

  165. Tracey Says:

Good point, AJ. So who gets the Jeltz tonight? Pedro’s certainly a contender for that rally-ending base-running error.

  166. DJ Says:

Next time the ump squeezes a pitcher Ol Cholly needs to get tossed, a Lou Pinella toss! They need some fire

  167. lm Says:

those 3 runs should have never happened because durbin threw TWO perfect pitches right down the middle of the plate to burrell which were called ball 3 and 4. wow, incosistent umps are seriously the story of the phillies.

  168. Tracey Says:

Charlie had a “talk” with Jimmy? What was that about?

  169. Miles Says:

@Tracey….Bastardo Bastardo Bastardo. This game was looking great until he threw a pitch.

  170. Shitarino Says:

Hahahahaha Andrew….how are the mets not a threat? They have three starters playing right now and are a 1/2 game behind you.

You guys are hysterical when you are losing! Priceless

  171. DJ Says:

Can they just call the game! They look like they don’t even want to play! Their demeanor is just bad and I think this whole outage started and ends with the pitching! It’s horrible and needs to be addressed ASAP!

  172. Miles Says:

If the game wouldn’t have been so close I guarantee Utley gets tossed back in the bottom of the 6th. He wanted to keep himself in the game to help the team but he wanted to absolutely bite the umps head off. Terrible home plate ump tonight but you make your own breaks, people. Stairs had a ball that he easily could have caught that helped pad the Rays lead and Feliz made a horrible horrible play on the basepaths. And Bastardo….well he threw a lot of fastballs.

  173. Georgie Says:

I’m feeling a bit front-runnerish about this one, not going to watch anymore.

  174. A.J. Says:

    cxl72

I second all of that! Well, not a fan of movies, but #1 and #2 anyway

  175. lm Says:

bastardo pretty much ruined the game from the 1st inning. i mean pedro made a huge mistake but if you have horrible pitching how do you expect to win a game?

  176. Miles Says:

@Arino….I personally think its hysterical that you never show your face on here except for when the Mets win and the Phillies lose. We try to use our WS championship as a comeback but you don’t seem to accept that.

  177. Tracey Says:

@Miles: Yeah, Bastardo didn’t have a good night. I liked him in his first start, but he just hasn’t been able to sustain it.

  178. cxl72 Says:

Thanks A.J. We may be proud of the Phils again. They just cant beat AL teams consistently.

  179. Dan Says:

Miles…why do you think its hysterical? Phillies fans troll just as much as mets boards….and you would think they wouldntt have to now that you are champions.

  180. Miles Says:

I’m outta here for the night….I’m gonna watch the rest of the game to embrace the pain of this moment but I have to do it on my own. The group negativity is not helping my emotional state.

  181. Shitarino Says:

Yeah you are correct, i do not accept that…One championship for all of your sport teams in 25 years does not impress me.

  182. Tracey Says:

I’ve got an OK Go song running thorugh my head…
Here it goes, here it goes, here it goes again… aw, here it goes again…
and not in a good way.

  183. DJ Says:

Is anyone watching this on MLB network? Mitch Williams is talking crap Im still mad at him! And its time to cut Traschner!

  184. Manny Says:

Georgie… I’m about to do the same… but I gotta stay for the 8th inning with Utley, Howard and co due up

  185. Miles Says:

Dan I totally agree with you. But you have to realize that most of the fans who do this just like to piss you off and care more about making Mets fans mad then they do about the Phillies winning. Don’t get me wrong, I love moments like when Castillo made that error, but I don’t have to go rub it in anyone’s faces to make it any better for myself. I am just against trolling of any kind unless you are going to show your face during the down times as well.

  186. DJ Says:

Shitarino- How can u claim Yankees championships if ur a Mets fan let me guess you bounce between yankees, mets, giants and Jets? Yea true New Yorker riding whoever you think is good!

  187. Andrew Says:

The mets are losers. when they have 9 game leads with 12 to play they lose. When they need to win on the last day the last game at shea ever. With every player from the past there. They lose.
Tom glavine has the worst game of his career in the last game of the season so the losers are not in the playoffs. Do I need to bring up yadier Molina and So Tagucchi homers for the cardinals?
The mets are not a factor. If they were up 9 games I would discount them. Do somethng. Dont be the biggest chokers in sports. then we will discuss considering the losers. How long ago was Castilla dropping that ball in the big game vs your cross town rivals? Losers are losers. You dont factor losers. At least I dont. I am worried about the Braves and Marlins.

  188. Tracey Says:

@Dan: So if somebody hits you, that gives you the right to hit somebody who never did anything to you? Is that they way it works in New York?

  189. Manny Says:

Did anyone else just see Charlie try to spit his gum out (and fail)?! hahaha Hilarious

  190. lm Says:

can someone tell me why if the phillies never feel they’re out of a game even by 5 runs, why are they using TRASHner??

why is he even on the team??

  191. Tracey Says:

You’re a troll, Dan. You’re an @sshole. And you’re trying to defend your right to be an @sshole by pointing out that people have been @ssholes to you. Well, I’m sorry to hear that, but I never did anything to you, and I’m tired of you taking out your emotional problems on us.

  192. DJ Says:

The worst thing about the way they are playing is my 5 year old son who is upset that they can’t win! And not to mention his favorite player who waved and signed his ball is benched!

  193. Tracey Says:

@DJ: You mean JRoll? Yeah, what’s up with that? I mean, I know he’s been slumping very badly, but he’s not exactly the only one.

  194. Andrew Says:

J roll is benched for his stupid play last night. So pedro Feliz should be benched tomorrow. Should stairs be?
Soon enough they will all be benched for stupid play.
Bruntlet is not a legitimate replacement at SS though. Dobbs can be at third.

  195. DJ Says:

@ Tracey Why even bother Dan, Eli, MR immature Shitarino are here everytime the Phils lose and Muts win regardless! Thats just the way they are more worried about our team then their own! If the Phils win tomorrow and the Muts lose then they wont say anything!

  196. Tracey Says:

Ah, here’s a detailed article about the JRoll situation:
    http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090625&content_id=5530736&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi

  197. Runshouse Says:

Did the Phils start stumbling once the Castillo picture went up at the top of the page?

  198. lm Says:

to me, using trashner is basically saying the phillies dont even care and give up….he’s totally useless and cant even go ONE inning without giving up a run

  199. Mark Says:

this is so badddd. we are playing like the mets. god we are aweful. 4 runs in the first and thats it. Feliz is stupid. Stairs does not hustle. Bruntlett playing short, give me a break. Our pitching is scary aweful..We will be behind florida and the mets soon.

  200. Tracey Says:

Oh, good grief, just finish the game

  201. DJ Says:

@ Tracey yea its JRoll but maybe this benching will be like Mcnabbs! Bring him back to earth and get him focused cus him and Hamels have to start walking the walk now

  202. Tracey Says:

This is why I didn’t want the replay rule. Bleh.

  203. Mark Says:

I love Eli. We are the two Jews. Thats all thats good about him.

  204. Tracey Says:

@DJ: Yeah, I hope this clears out JRoll’s head. He’s better than he’s playing, he’s just psyched himself out, but I’ve never been clear on what’s the best way to get past that.

  205. DJ Says:

@ Tracey, I think the best thing to do is bat him 5th since Raul isn’t in right now to help his confidence! Move him like they did Big Papi and when Raul comes back make him sixth!

  206. Shitarino Says:

    Hey Andrew whos Castilla hahaha

  207. Mark Says:

THE YANKEES WILL SWEEP THE MUTS. The Mets are so bad.

  208. Tracey Says:

@DJ: He seems to do better later in the order, but he doesn’t like being there, and Charlie likes to keep his players happy.

  209. DJ Says:

Anyone think Howard shoulda played first, Dobbs at short since he is a third baseman and DH’d Mayberry? Mayberry is good

  210. j reed Says:

Im: well with the injury to Eyre and a shakey JC, they need a left hander even if it means shakey followed by more shakey. Odds typically favor lefty pitchers vs. lefty batters. just a guess

  211. j reed Says:

    I’m getting coffee, ugh!

  212. Tracey Says:

@DJ: I think Howard may still be recovering from his illness, so they’re taking it easy on him. But I would definitely like to see Mayberry in here. Honestly, I like him better than Stairs.

  213. DJ Says:

@ Tracey, Well he needs to take one for the team then! He opened his mouth about the Phillies beating the Mets again so now he needs to help his team anyway he can! He is one of the leaders time to act like one

  214. Tracey Says:

@J Reed: too long and slow for you? I hear you.

  215. j reed Says:

well at least we’ve seen wheeler….I think he was with the Stros….

  216. DJ Says:

@ Tracey, I agree I mean you let Werth bat against righties and he has been horrible lately! You have to give a kid like that more shots. I think I like Coste playing first and hitting then instead of the beard!

  217. Tracey Says:

    Ugh.

  218. Tracey Says:

Somebody heard me! Mayberry is in for Stairs! :D

  219. j reed Says:

tracey: need to stay awake for 2 hours post game self punishment: listening to sports radio, pouring over stats., checking trade rumors, head scratching, arm chair GMing….

  220. DJ Says:

The Phils have 4 scoring innings out of 27 in this series granted if they don’t score next inning! The whole stairs and dobbs line up isnt working! Coste and Mayberry have to be in the lineup tomorrow

  221. RiVLez Says:

The saddest thing of all is the Mets have so many injuries and still are right there. You can’t say anything about the Mets this year because they are using a hybrid AAA team.

  222. Tracey Says:

    @J Reed: I don’t think I could take that much torture! :)

  223. DJ Says:

@ Rivlez once their catchers go cold the Mets are done! They have won them alot of games but that can only last for so long

  224. Tracey Says:

Re Lidge: Um… yeah, not exactly a save situation at the moment

  225. Tracey Says:

    That was a pretty flip.l

  226. Tracey Says:

    Oh, NICE catch, Carlos!

  227. RiVLez Says:

It only has to last for a tad longer. They have lost 2 starters and 3 of the top 4 hitters on the team. They just need to keep doing what they are doing now and they will be fine, especially if the Phillies play like they have been. They are an absolutely MESS right now. Why do you guys think so?

  228. DJ Says:

Yea that was nice! He was all over that!

  229. Tracey Says:

THAT’S what I’m talking about! Why didn’t he start this game, Charlie???

  230. RiVLez Says:

I want to see the Phillies lose Howard, Utley and Ibanez. And then lose their 3 & 4 pitchers. I seriously doubt they would even be remotely decent.

  231. Tracey Says:

Aw, crap. Feliz is another guy who really needs to get his head together.

  232. Louis Says:

remember when we used to win series? those days were fun.

  233. ned Says:

    phillies suck

  234. DJ Says:

We lost our #2 pitcher our closer, Ibanez basically Rollins (an actual MVP) and Howard the last week as long as Beltran so don’t give me those excuses! you lost more games with all of them then with them!

  235. Tracey Says:

(sigh) Feliz for the Jeltz. His baserunning error killed one potential rally, and he GIDP in the top of the 9th to kill our come-back at the end of the game.

  236. Tracey Says:

I mean, I’m glad he broke out of his hitless streak, but really, he blew this game bad.

  237. DJ Says:

Yea Last series we won was at the Mets! 3 more Interleague games and its back against the NL

  238. Tracey Says:

Honestly, this is the same record we had in 15 games of Interleague play last year. Didn’t keep us from winning the WS then.

  239. ned Says:

howard for 2 games rollins is playin never got hurt

  240. BILL Says:

Triple Mets are half game behind the Phillies…. PATHETIC.

  241. Tracey Says:

Here’s an interesting blog entry from one year ago today that I hope puts things into perspective:
    http://www3.allaroundphilly.com/blogs/intercounty/ontheedge/2008/06/interleague-shows-where-phils-stand.html

  242. RiVLez Says:

Lets be serious for a sec. Brett Myers is terrible he’s nothing better than Oliver Perez and as a matter of fact, he’s never had a year as good as Perez has had. You lost Howard for what 2 games?!?! C’mon get real DJ. You didn’t lose Rollins, he is just playing how he should be playing. Ibanez is the only one you can say anything about. DJ you are a delirious person and see only what you want to see. I am being serious and talking as a baseball fan, not a Met fan.

  243. DJ Says:

When ur not playing the field you get out of rhythm! my point is stop making excuses stay on your boards and stay out of ours!

  244. RiVLez Says:

Don’t be a sore loser. Facts is facts.

  245. Tracey Says:

RiVLez, you might want to take a look at that blog entry I just linked. One year ago today, the Phils were coming off *exactly* the same kind of slumping losing streak, just barely in first place after a dominating lead, and people were making *exactly* the same kind of comments I’m hearing here tonight… and yet, we won it all.

  246. BILL Says:

The more Phillies fans show how miserable “trolls” make you….and the more you pay attention….the more the trolls will come….it clearly drives you insane.

  247. Tracey Says:

    That’s not delusion; that’s reality.

  248. BILL Says:

Keep reflecting on the past Tracey that will do your team a lot of good….your pitching staff is absolute shit.

  249. DJ Says:

You can’t compare Myers to Perez! Cora is playing better than Reyes was, Delgado is old and Beltran well nothing I can say about him! John Maine is alright unlike you I played against him in High School which he went to North Stafford and I went to Brooke Point so A baseball fan no a player yes!

  250. Tracey Says:

Good point, Bill. Interesting to note that many of them disappeared around 10 PM, though there was plenty of game left. Maybe phan1 was right: they’re 12 year olds, and 10 PM is their bed time.

  251. BILL Says:

DJ = douche . . . I played high school baseball with John Maine. WOW can i have your autograph

  252. ToniBastard Says:

I’m sorry I sucked today guys, my shoulder hurt all day.

  253. Tracey Says:

Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it, Bill. Yes, we’ve got problems, but to suggest that the season is over because we’re only half a game ahead and play… that’s ridiculous, and we know it’s ridiculous, because we’ve pulled out of situations every bit as bad.

  254. Tracey Says:

Shitarino (aka ToniBastard), you’re up past your bedtime aren’t you?

  255. DJ Says:

Bill U immature @sshole go back to your hole! He challenged me as a fan, ur probably one of those 40 yr old B1tches that sit around n try to call people names and talk sh1t cus u have no life and sit around and jerk off all day! Stick to softball u fat b1tch!

  256. ShameLooserino Says:

even the Mets have more heart than this team, I’m the only playing hard.

  257. Shitarino Says:

hahah looks like they are fighting eachother now….this is great

  258. ShameLooserino Says:

I don’t like hypocrites like Looserino

  259. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Like I said this week…you put the best 9 out there and hope one or two have a great game. The thing with the Amazins is,people are stepping up while some of the healthy Phils (J-Roll in particular) is showing no heart. Both teams have serious injuries to players who are sparkplugs to their teams Reyes and Beltran for us,Myers and Ibanez for you.Now its a slender 1/2 game that separates us,Someone on your team REALLY needs to stand up because once Reyes and Beltran return…..WATCH OUT! PS How bout that Nieve kid.

  260. david Says:

@DJ, rivelz has a point. the injuries that the mets have sustained this year have been incredible. you really cant compare the phillies injuries at all. losing 3 out of your 4 best hitter, 2 of them for considerable stretches, plus 2 starters, your setup man, your backup ss [which wouldnt matter normally, except the starter was already out], your starting catcher [he may not be joe mauer, but he has experience working with the staff that you lose with a guy like santos] its ridiculous. howard for two days, lidge for 2 weeks, myers and ibanez isnt the same. Ibanez is really the only injury that has been detrimental to the phils since myers was doing much worse than happ, and lidge had already blown something like 6 saves. the mets are the most injured team in baseball by a long shot. the phils should be up 8 games in the standings

  261. MurrayH Says:

LOL ShameLooserino!! Thats hysterical. This thread was a great read.

  262. Tracey Says:

A little light reading for Shame Looserino and his ilk:
    http://loseloose.com/

  263. Tracey Says:

Or to sum that page up as the title does:
    Only losers spell it “looser”
