Philadelphia Phillies (37-33) at Toronto Blue Jays (40-34)

The Phillies seek revenge on the Toronto Blue Jays after last week’s three game sweep.  The Phillies hope to stay in first place as their lead in the National League East was cut to a half game.

The match-up, Cole Hamels and Ricky Romero, is an exact rematch of game one at Citizens Bank Park, a ten inning Blue Jays victory.

In his start against the Blue Jays, Hamels allowed two runs over six innings.  He did not pitch as deep as he would have liked as his pitch count exceeded 110 pitches.  Against the Phillies, Ricky Romero pitched seven innings and gave up three runs in the no decision.  He struck out nine Phillies, a career high for Romero.

Alex Rios and Vernon Wells are probably the two most feared hitters in the Jays’ lineup.  However, former Phillies Rod Barajas and Scott Rolen destroyed Phillies pitching last week.  Barajas was 4-for-9 with 2 home runs and 4 RBI. Rolen was 6-for-14 with 4 RBI and a home run.

Jimmy Rollins will find himself on the bench once again even though he is batting .500 against Romero.

Your Gameday Beer: It’s Friday, so we’re breaking out the good beer. Canadian Breakfast Stout is a product of the Founders Brewing Company, located just below the border in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The name refers to the sweet maple syrup, chocolate, caramel, and molasses flavors contained within this 9.8% heavyweight. This beer gets high reviews from almost everyone who drinks it; unfortunately it is a rare find in most of America, so try some if you get the opportunity. 1. John Russo Says:

Let’s get this win train rolling. I’m tired of the losing and the offense’s inconsistency.

They scored 15 runs in the Rays series and the innings looked like this:
    Tues: 6, 4
    Wed: 1
    Thurs: 4

  2. Alex Says:

    CF Victorino
    2B Utley
    RF Werth
    1B Howard
    LF Mayberry
    3B Feliz
    DH Coste
    SS Bruntlett
    C Ruiz

  3. Nick Says:

God wheeler is terrible. Romero throws a 84 mph changeup to strikeout mayberry and goes on to say “he just threw that fastball right by him, and he couldn’t catch up” terrible.

  4. Greg V. Says:

Wheels is as lame as they get!

  5. Bill Says:

Wheeler has me more and more listening to the games on the radio. I wish they would put Franske and Andersen on the radio for at least 3 innings to give us a break!

  6. The Dipsy Says:

Wheeler is a monument to horrible journalism and broadcasting.

    The Dipsy

  7. Tracey Says:

(sigh) Well, at least it’s a quick game.

  8. Mark Says:

Leave Wheels alone. Why would you put the guy down. My god. Put down Charlie if anyone. Keeps Rollins out. All you are doing is hurting the team. Stick him in the 6th hole and be done with it. Better then Bruntlett. The bottom of the order is pathetic. The only people that thinks he should be batting one is you and rollins. He is not patient and does not walk. This team needs to be displined and grow some balls.

  9. Mark Says:

good victoriono. keep swinging at that 2-2 outside pitch. he is horrible…

  10. Geoff Says:

Rollins is useless as a leadoff hitter if he cant get on base.

  11. Tracey Says:

OK, let’s make that baserunner pay off…

  12. Tracey Says:

    Rats.

  13. Mark Says:

come on…we are making baby taco bell look like john smoltz..

  14. Tracey Says:

    argh

  15. Tracey Says:

No, you don’t have to keep an eye on the guy on first, you just have to get the batter OUT!

  16. Tracey Says:

OK, now let’s slam them back with two runs of our own…

  17. Keith Says:

ugh, can we get a hit now? that’d be fun.

  18. Tracey Says:

@Keith: Oh, is that the objective of the game? I thought the idea was to flail at the ball futilely.

  19. Manny Says:

Ok, so if we can’t get Halladay, can we try to get Romero??

  20. Tracey Says:

    (sigh!)

  21. joedad Says:

Cy Rubio is kicking some butt tonite

  22. Keith Says:

at least the Mets are making errors galore

  23. joedad Says:

    Sorry Cy Romero

  24. A.J. Says:

    Mets = 3 errors in 2nd inning NYY 4 MYM 0

  25. Mazinman Says:

I really don’t feel like I am much in a position to enjoy the Mets fielding woes when our team hasn’t even gotten a hit yet.

  26. Keith Says:

    blah

  27. Manny Says:

Yup, right now we need to worry about our team… this offense is looking pathetic today and the Jays could have a big inning here…

  28. Keith Says:

    Phillies suck at interleague

  29. A.J. Says:

I do not care at this point. I am sick of the Mets trolls here. As long as they lose I am giving up on what we do. We have time to come back. Damn the Karma, I am rooting all Yankees and Phillies tonight LOL

  30. Terri Says:

ugh what is going on with the Phils.

  31. nm Says:

cole’s rising pitch count = not good

can the offense show up at some point? that would be much appreciated

  32. Manny Says:

What’s up with Cole’s fastball? It’s in the high 80s! Can’t recall seeing it above 90! (nervous)

  33. A.J. Says:

At this point, if we are down, I hope the Marlins take it for a bit then we can compete with them. The trolls on this site have ruined this game for me. Now that Tim is going I question my own relationship at PN

  34. Terri Says:

Chan Ho is warming up. Not a good sign. Might be Cole’s last inning.

  35. Jeff Says:

GAME OVER. Hamels looks horrilbe. We cant hit. After Howard our lineup is like watching the Trenton Thunder. This team is aweful now. No heart this year no displine and Charlie is still a horrible manager.

  36. Terri Says:

Wow, this team just can’t catch a break.

  37. Sam D Says:

I hope we get no hit, might knock some sense into these people we call baseball players. NO ENERGY, NO LEADERSHIP, maybe getting NO HIT will do the trick. Extreme maybe, effective? Hell yes

  38. j reed Says:

j reed- was listening on the radio till this inning…has Hamels been throwing his curve…wow an NL team getting small balled by an AL East team.

  39. Manny Says:

Can we PLEASE have a hit? This is unbearable… It’s a no-hitter and Cole isn’t looking sharp anymore.

  40. Mazinman Says:

Just ignore the trolls A.J. Honestly, nothing they say bothers me nearly as much as how the Phils are playing right now.

  41. Terri Says:

If losing eight games at HOME do not wake you up, I don’t know what will.

  42. Sam D Says:

heres an idea, send the whole team down to lehigh valley and bring that team up here and see if we can’t do better haha

  43. Keith Says:

umps are babies, I’m fed up with them. can we please eliminate them with robots?

  44. A.J. Says:

True, but you cannot reason with them at all.

  45. Jeff Says:

dont be mad hollywood you got your stinking money,,,,you waste.

  46. Manny Says:

Sam D, you definitely have a good point… It’s building up right now, we just need something bad/embarrassing to happen to shock this team and start from scratch.

  47. Sam D Says:

see valley iron pigs are winning again wow, maybe that would be cruel to the mlb players, but we are desperate right now haha

  48. A.J. Says:

Ron Darling just said the Phillies are destined to get swept in Toronto. I was mad, but his reason makes sense… It is in our heads at this point. He is not saying his Mets will win though… LOL

  49. Keith Says:

Jeff, u’re kidding with that post. so I’ll ignore that.

  50. Sam D Says:

Manny -it would be extremely painful for the players and the fans, but once they get no hit and see their pitiful performances on the field on ESPN highlight reels, somethings gotta snap into place

  51. Terri Says:

    OMG Chan Ho!

  52. Keith Says:

Park is injured, DL for him

The Pen is a curse, cancel that show

  53. Manny Says:

You can tell the guys are frustrated… Utley arguing with the ump yesterday (or a couple of days ago?) and now Hamels arguing with this ump and getting toseed….

AND HOLY CRAP, Park, our only good pitcher right now, got FREAKING INJURED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AH!! This is a nightmare.

  54. Sam D Says:

    Keith- LMFAO

  55. nm Says:

im glad cole yelled at that frickin ump, even sarge said he was calling that pitch a strike the whole night

great, now chan ho! hey if the ump had called that pitch a damn strike this would have never happened!

  56. A.J. Says:

Chan Ho is a hero for this, especially if he goes on the DL.

    I hope he is OK

  57. Terri Says:

Chan Ho has been our best pitcher. Definitely not good.

  58. Sam D Says:

it says eric bruntlett got a hit, what the hell, even gameday is performing like the phils

  59. Greg V. Says:

Wow! Our only available long man just got injured! Jesus christ!

  60. Manny Says:

I can definitely sense that the tipping point is near… injuries, horrible plays, frustration, no offense…. one of these days (likely when Interleague’s over) this whole thing will have to snap back into place…

  61. A.J. Says:

Cole is one too; that is the same umpire that Zambrabo ran in with

  62. Sam D Says:

Cole got tossed? Ok, i need comcast

  63. Dan Says:

I can’t watch this team anymore. They are getting smashed again by the Rays and don’t have a hit through 5. They are playing like a last place team. What is wrong with them? They suck.

  64. Manny Says:

He got tossed, but when he was on his way out, Sam.

  65. A.J. Says:

I am going out on a limb and saying we are in trouble. I was an advocate of waiting until June 30. We NOW know what we need on this club. Gents, expect to lose first for a time, but I have NO DOUBT we will get it back by September. We are going through the summer blues now.

  66. Greg V. Says:

The Phils are about to hit rock bottom

  67. Keith Says:

    this game sucks lol

  68. Sam D Says:

lets have open tryouts for the phils? Who’s in?

  69. Keith Says:

who will get the first hit tonight for the Phillies?

  70. Terri Says:

A no hitter through six innings. Wow.

  71. Greg B Says:

    how did Park get out?

  72. Manny Says:

    No-hitter through 6.

  73. Greg B Says:

    how did Park get injured?

  74. Sam D Says:

Keith- I say matt stairs pinch hits and gets a hit

  75. Keith Says:

I want umps to be replaced with robots, it’s time. umps are babies with no patience.

  76. Keith Says:

at least we have that Utley walk so no perfect game

  77. Greg V. Says:

This no hitter will be broken up. I just have this crazy feeling they are about to go on a tear. Things can’t get much worse.

  78. A.J. Says:

I would love to be an MLB Umpire, and I would be a god one…

  79. Sam D Says:

Keith- open tryouts for umps? Who’s in haha

  80. Jeff Says:

good job victoriono. Three staight at bats he has gotten out on the low and outside pitch. Charlie needs to be fired. Thats it. Keeps Rollins out is a ashame. Nobody can hit. We will be a .500 team which is horrible.

  81. Dan Says:

The team can’t hit, pitch or field. When was the last time they were this bad? I mean, I know we went 4-12 against the AL last year, but I can’t remember it being this bad. I keep throwing stuff against the wall. Why is this team sucking so bad? Someone needs to step up and lead this team Where are our leaders? The Mets have over half their lineup on the DL, and they could take over first this weekend. This is awful. I can’t take it anymore (while jumping off the Walt Whitman Bridge)

  82. Greg V. Says:

Tell us when the replay is T-Mac!

  83. nm Says:

    yeah, thankfully utley got walked…

why couldnt taschner get injured?? why does something like that have to happen to our best reliever!! this sucks…

  84. Sam D Says:

HAHA you know what i realized, Tyler Walker is one of those guys who gives up about ten runs in three games, but wait ….. they belong to the other guys in the pen haha, that would get on my nerves

  85. Keith Says:

    Charlie should not be fired

  86. Manny Says:

Dan, it was just as bad in 2008… but with less or no injuries.

I think we’ve now joined the Mets with half our team in the DL too. Myers, Ibañez, Condrey, Lidge (till yesterday), Eyre, now Park

  87. Sam D Says:

Keith- nope he should be castrated, lit on fire, then fired, jk jk jk

  88. Keith Says:

can’t wait until this series is over, interleague will be done! :D

  89. Shitarino Says:

Welcome to the life of a Mets fan right now…our f’n Triple A team just made 3 errors in one inning…our lineup makes me angry when I look at it

  90. Sam D Says:

Do you guys remember a game where we were being shutout by dontrelle willis, then scored ten runs in the 9th to win? Hey anything can happen

  91. A.J. Says:

Charlie is not the problem. We don’t have personnel problems. We have funks everyone is in. I do not know the answer. I now say we need a starter or two and about 2 pen people. The offense will come out of this, and we’ll be fine. WHEN we’ll be fine is the question. When we break out, we will break out hard.

  92. Manny Says:

Yup the Phillies can STILL comeback anytime… but we need to get a hit first! Lately, the only thing they’re capable of is score in bunches.

  93. Shitarino Says:

and Manny no you are not up to the Mets yet….Delgado, Reyes, Beltran, Maine, Putz, Perez is not equal to Meyers Condrey Ibanez, and Park…Mets players have been on the DL for a while

  94. A.J. Says:

Here is another Mets fan coming on here. I am so sick of this.

  95. Terri Says:

    We Got a HIT!!

  96. A.J. Says:

    Chase Utley is the man

  97. Sam D Says:

HALLLELUHIAAAAAAAAAA WE GOT A …… HITTTTTT

  98. Dan Says:

Utley just broke the no hitter. Thank goodness

  99. Keith Says:

no hitter goodbye, Utley gets it done

  100. Sam D Says:

now watch a double play haha, sorry guys, but you know its coming

  101. nm Says:

    dont ruin it jayson!!

  102. Sam D Says:

Load em for a mayberry slam, sounds like something you can get at Dennys or Ihop

  103. Keith Says:

    oo two hits

  104. A.J. Says:

    Sam D – almost, but no…

  105. Sam D Says:

    yes back to back!!!!!!!!!

  106. nm Says:

i cant wait for raul to come back! just thought i’d throw that out there

  107. A.J. Says:

    C’mon HOWARD

  108. Sam D Says:

AJ- hahaha yeah i know but who can blame me for trying

  109. A.J. Says:

    Darn you Sam D

  110. Keith Says:

oh well, at least we got 2 hits

  111. Sam D Says:

    UGH

  112. j reed Says:

wow get out the defibrillator, two hits….dp, flat-line….

  113. Terri Says:

That ball was hit hard. We just can’t catch a break.

  114. A.J. Says:

    LOL

  115. Sam D Says:

I’m sorry guys, but someone was gonna do it

  116. nm Says:

the phillies seriously have the worst luck – they can never get a break!!!

  117. Greg B Says:

    Cmon Mayberry.

  118. Greg B Says:

    you bum.

  119. Keith Says:

    well those hits were fun

  120. Sam D Says:

    WTF

  121. Sam D Says:

Ok, i’m going to watch the lehigh valley iron pigs game, wake me up when we get another win

  122. A.J. Says:

    Yankees 4 Mets 0
    Marlins 2 Tampa 3

Some good news, but not long lived good news

  123. Dan Says:

Gee..another double play at a crucial time in the game. Story of the 2009 Phils.

  124. A.J. Says:

I am watching the Mets lose, which give me a greater joy right now. Sad on many ends. I am becoming bitter.

  125. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

This team is so difficult to watch these days

  126. A.J. Says:

Sheffield just hit a HR. Bad night could get worse

  127. Georgie Says:

I just came in because I was getting bitten by all kinds of bugs outside, turned the game on, and, OMG, they’re getting shut out! I am shocked!

    What happened with Cole?

  128. Greg V. Says:

Pending a breakout inning (LOL) I propose the entire team for the Jeltz!

  129. j reed Says:

the one saving grace about astro turf, it can take an average fielder and turn him into a gold glover.

  130. Greg V. Says:

Cole let up 4 in 4.2. When he got taken out, he yelled at the ump and got tossed.

  131. Greg V. Says:

Nevermind. Tyler Walker and Chan Ho-Park had perfect outings!

  132. A.J. Says:

    Good to see Brad back

  133. Terri Says:

    Brad Lidge

  134. Greg V. Says:

    Lidge returns!

  135. Dan Says:

Prediction: Lidge gives up three runs

  136. Terri Says:

    He gives up a hit.

  137. Dan Says:

I can’t watch this team anymore. They could fall out of first tonight. I am going to break a window in my house.

  138. Georgie Says:

Oh, good Lord, how much more can we take?

  139. Dan Says:

Prediction: Lidge gives up more than three runs. He was a one year wonder. We need a new closer.

  140. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Can somebody let the Phillies know they have a game tonight?

  141. Georgie Says:

Dan, you can’t go breaking windows this early in the season, save that for post-season.

  142. j reed Says:

    give’em the high cheez

  143. Terri Says:

Yea, I am not feeling confident about Lidge. 2 on no outs Runner a 3rd.

  144. nm Says:

i just hope that lidge is truly healthy and is not just saying that he is to get back in the bullpen…

  145. cxl72 Says:

At least we dont have to watch Rollins go 0-5 with 4 pop ups.

  146. j reed Says:

    wow, sloppy ruiz…

  147. Dan Says:

Lidge sucks. He still can’t get anybody out. He’ll never be the same. Get us a new closer.

  148. Greg Says:

FYI… Phils haven’t scored in 16 straight innings (thanks in part to Feliz’s slick base running last night)

  149. Jeff Says:

Good job charlie, fatso putting lidge in a wastless spot. We actually might need him tom. As you can see Lidge is still lidge. this team is horrible. Amost as bad as the METS.

  150. Dan Says:

he’ll load the bases with a walk here. he is so predictable

  151. Manny Says:

This team started to go downhill when BRETT MYERS got injured.

Oh and can you hear the “PHILLIES SUCK” chants… this is embarrasing… (but hopefully will make us snap out of this faster)

  152. Keith Says:

    Blue Jays fans getting cocky

  153. Terri Says:

goodness, the phils know how to keep it interesting. Bases Loaded No Out. Lidge is just not the same.

  154. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Like it even matters. The Phillies can’t score anyway.

  155. Dan Says:

what did I tell you! He is so predictable

  156. Dan Says:

I said he will give up three runs. He just gave up one. I want Lidge off this team. He officially sucks. He will never be the same. Go out and trade for a closer.

  157. j reed Says:

I’m telling you Lidge is tippin’ pitches or he’s allowing batters to see the sliders’ rotation to early…then they lay-off

  158. Georgie Says:

Lidge has a whole different demeanor this year, the look on his face, body language, not showing any confidence, I really wonder if it’s a mental thing.

  159. lovehandles Says:

Breaking news… entire Phillies staff on DL. Rich Dubee to start Saturday.

  160. Terri Says:

It could get worse with J.C coming in.

  161. Philsphan Says:

    Dan,

Give me a break. Seriously shut up with this talk. Every pitcher goes through a rough patch. Lidge just needs to get back to his mental state of last year. Once he gets back that confidence he’ll be lights out again.

  162. joedad Says:

I can tell when Lidge is going to throw a fastball or a slider so the major league hitters should be able to also.

  163. Greg Says:

WTF… let Lidge clean up his own mess. If he hurts himself again we’re better off anyway.

  164. j reed Says:

dan – like who…the quality starter’s market is dwindling to nothing and well there has never been one for closers.

  165. Mazinman Says:

I think that for the rest of June I am just going to close my eyes, cover my ears, and keep yelling “La la la Can’t hear you!”…

  166. nm Says:

lidge is still not the same…looks the same before he went on DL…im getting worried

imagine if we were winning and that would have been him in the 9th..yikes

  167. Dan Says:

Oh boy..here is Romero. Another one who has been pitching like crap. He’ll walk two runs in. This bullpen lost its confidence and touch. I can’t take it anymore. They play with no fire. AGGGGHHHH I think I need therapy. I love the Phils too much to see them lose like this.

  168. Greg V. Says:

    Final score prediction. 10-0

  169. Georgie Says:

    Why am I still watching?

  170. Jeff Says:

Romereo please go to another gnc store becuase your terrible.

  171. Greg V. Says:

FANTASTIC DOUBLE PLAY says T-Mac! LOL!

  172. Jeff Says:

It really is amazing when you think about how fast this team has fallen. They are not even average anymore.

  173. Greg V. Says:

You are watching Georgie because Bruntlett and Ruiz are going to start a rally!

  174. Greg V. Says:

Yeah no kidding. They went from mediocre to good to mediocre to sucking to awful! I haven’t seen this lot every play so bad.

  175. Georgie Says:

Yes, Greg, Dirk Hayhurst is going to give up 6 runs, that’s why, no doubt!

  176. Mazinman Says:

They should just start a benches clearing brawl. Give us some entertainment at least.

  177. j reed Says:

joedad- the HOFer joe morgan said the same thing but when Lidge was tossing for the Stros….Also, Dave Duncan saw that Kyle Loshe was tipping his pitches, i.e. closing his glove for certain pitches, leaving it open for others…How could Dubee have missed this. Check out this article
    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/nl/cardinals/2009-05-04-duncan-cardinals_N.htm
with Floyd performing well for Ozzie “the tantrum” Guien, Loshe and Frankilin as Cardinal stand-outs makes me wonder. OMG we have a run, get out the defibrillator….

  178. cxl72 Says:

What a terrible 2 weeks. Howard hit that game tying homer against the Red Sox and its been 2 weeks of pure torture.

  179. Greg V. Says:

The Phils are on the board! Yay!

  180. ll Says:

way to swing the bat in the 9th when we’re down by 6! that’s the way to do it

    any news on chan ho??

  181. Mazinman Says:

What happened to Chan Ho? I missed that.

  182. Manny Says:

    “Good” night all.

  183. j reed Says:

post game with Batalico or Mitch? Batalico seems to get more and more angry with each of these loses…espcially with some of these the call -up pitcher that these teams keep throwing our way…

  184. j reed Says:

Mazinman- 2 outs, men on 2nd and 3rd, hard hit grounder back to the mound…knee contusion…he walked off the field though

  185. CT Says:

the Jeltz award should go to “the 2009 Phillies” because this was a complete team loss here.

  186. j reed Says:

this is why HAMELS needs that 3rd pitch…his curve is still under construction

  187. j reed Says:

    CT- i agree.
Hamels didn’t have his best stuff but people need to remember that he is a power left-hander with a killer change-up like Santanta and Liriano who many of the Jays have seen over the years…but unlike Santana who has that hard slider of death, Hamels is primarily a two pitch pitcher whose curve is coming along. He should avoid it in 3-2 counts until he has mastered it.

  188. Keith Says:

well at least the Mets and Marlins are gonna lose too, the NL East sucks right now.

  189. shag beta sigma delta Says:

You all can bitch about the bad pitching in the last two weeks all you want but the true fault mostly lies with the offense, yea the scored last night in the first inning, but come on three hits against this guy tonight, 3 or 4 hits against the rays the other night, I am not saying they should score 10 runs a game, but is 5 or 6 hits a night too much to ask, I would take that over how they played recently, even if they did not score a bunch of runs, but these guys just are not hitting.
How many more days til Raul is back, and does anyone think the 2 or 3 day benching of JRoll, whom I like as a player, will bring him back with some kind of heart, and bat.
I know it is only June but these guys need to get some fire in their eyes, and start playing better

  190. A.J. Says:

Look, Lidge has been through a lot and even last year he never did well in games we were tied or ahead. Give the man a chance.

We need at least one starter and a pen guy.

How quickly you all forget we had a horrible June. The record is 9-14. Worst case scenario is 9-17, best case 12-14. Last June we were 12-14. So we may do a little worse, but we are still, by the grace of God, in first. Soon we will have Raul back, and hopefully others.

Am I worried – heck yes. I am more peeved though about the Mets fans than I am worried about the Phillies keeping first. We have to come back tot he NL East teams and bury them. We must, non-negotiable.

    Will we? No clue.
