Gameday: Phillies (37-34) At Blue Jays (41-34)

Philadelphia Phillies (37-34) at Toronto Blue Jays (41-34)

J.A Happ (4-0, 3.47 ERA) vs. Brad Mills (0-0, 9.82 ERA)
Time: 1:07 p.m at Rogers Centre
Weather: Dome
TV: MY PHL17
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The Phillies had a 20 minute closed door meeting after Friday’s game and hopefully that can put some fire under their belts after a month long struggle.

An offensive explosion would be perfect for the Phillies to redeem themselves after being quieted by Ricky Romero last night. They are facing Brad Mills, who they knocked around in the series in Philadelphia.  Mills took the no decision in the Blue Jays’ 8-7 win.  In his Major League debut, Mills threw 94 pitches in 3.2 innings.  The Phillies scored four runs off Mills including home runs by Jayson Werth and Jimmy Rollins.  Also, the Phillies need to take advantage of Mills eight day layoff.

Offense helps, but the Phillies also need good pitching from starter J.A Happ and from the bullpen.

Fat Tire Amber AleYour Gameday Beer: In the summer, cold amber brews are always refreshing thanks to their light body and smooth flavors. New Belgium Fat Tire Amber Ale is no exception. The first time I had a Fat Tire was across the street from Coors Field at Pat’s Cheesesteak, a Phillies bar. Inspired by Belgium (both the brewing style and the country) this delicious beer has a toasty and inviting aroma. Although it’s not yet available east of the Mississippi, for those of you in the distribution area, have some fresh ravioli stuffed with cheese or seasonal veggies.  - By Brian

  1. Greg V. Says:

I had my first Fat Tire in AZ last year after hearing rave reviews! We need that stuff on the East Coast!

  2. Keith Says:

    WERTH!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Miles Says:

This streak has been very tough on me so I have made a rule that if we don’t score in the first I’m not going to watch the game….until further notice.

OHHHHH YEAHHHHH! Looks like I’m watching today!!!

  4. Drew P Says:

    HOMERUN!!!
Fat Tire is a delicious beer, I was just in Colorado and went into the Liquor store and just asked a regular customer what a good local beer was. He suggested this beer and he was right.

  5. Keith Says:

    FELIZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Miles Says:

Ok, can we please hold a 4 run lead today? The last time we scored 4 in the first, disaster was right around the corner.

  7. CT Says:

    excellent catch by Jr. there!

  8. lm Says:

a pitcher who can actually hold a 4 run lead!! finally…

  9. Tracey Says:

Oops… forgot that today was a 1PM game! But … am I the only one who finds that 4-run first nerve-wrackingly familiar?

  10. Tracey Says:

Oh, nice catch! Fortunately, Canadians don’t interfere with players.

  11. BJSally Says:

Were gonna lose if we don’t score atleast 10 runs we stink this year really STINK….sorry but its reality

  12. Keith Says:

nah we won’t need 10 runs today

  13. Tracey Says:

hee hee! I’ll take that hit!

  14. BJSally Says:

    I hope not….need a win ….big time …hoping I’m wrong…lately I can’t even watch….

  15. Miles Says:

Did anyone hear a measurement for JWerth’s bomb? It had to be 500 feet

  16. nm Says:

mills is def. hittable – a 9.82 ERA?? is that even serious? they need to crush him

  17. Miles Says:

BJSally….correction, we really stink in the last three weeks. Before that we were one of the top 3 teams in baseball. All we need is three weeks in the opposite direction and we will climb out of our stinky stinkiness.

  18. Miles Says:

nm that is only in 1 or 2 starts though so while it’s a high ERA its not over the course of a few months or anything. We hit him well in Philly but our pitchers blew it.

  19. Tracey Says:

The Phillies always stink in Interleague play.

  20. Miles Says:

Probably the biggest thing we have going for us today is that Rolen and Barajas aren’t playing. If we can just keep the formal Phils out of the lineup we should be in good shape.

    Nice DP!

  21. Tracey Says:

    Bea-u-ti-ful!

  22. Miles Says:

    former Phils not formal Phils

  23. Miles Says:

Happ looks wild and pretty hittable so far today. He has already dodged a couple bullets. Hopefully we can tack a few on in case he runs into trouble.

  24. UguethUrbina Says:

has anyone heard more about this? from zlecki’s ttwitter…

A Phillies player was involved in an incident with a Rays fan Thursday night. Police were involved: http://tinyurl.com/la8dl

  25. Keith Says:

benching Rollins is pointless, Bruntlett can’t hit

    but woo Ruiz :D

  26. Kevin the Canadian Says:

Hello my name is Kevin. I’m from Canada and lets go Jays!!!!

  27. Miles Says:

See if anyone else is with me here….as bad as JRoll has been, does it really make sense to sit him and have Bruntlett in the lineup? Might as well just hit JRoll 7 or 8 and the lineup looks so much better. I understand that Chollie wanted to give him time to chill out and get things together, but the Beard cannot do anything positive on the offensive end.

  28. Kevin the Canadian Says:

lets go Jays we can win this one.

  29. Keith Says:

    Werth for the cycle?

  30. Miles Says:

    JWerth needs a triple….

  31. DJ Says:

Good Job Werth! One triple away from the cycle and 3-3 today!

  32. Tracey Says:

Yeah, but the triple is the hardest part of the cycle to get

  33. Tracey Says:

    Oh yes!!! RYAN!

  34. Keith Says:

    woo more runs

  35. Tracey Says:

I don’t know what Chollie said to these guys, but I wish he’d said it a week ago!

  36. Trent Holvick Says:

yea im curious to see which phillies player got in an altercation with a rays fan……if anyone knows more about the situation keep us updated

  37. Kevin the Canadian Says:

    Mets are boring

  38. Trent Holvick Says:

    phillies offense on fire baby!!!!!!!!WHOOO!!!!!!!!!!

  39. Keith Says:

    bases loaded :)

  40. Keith Says:

    hmm

  41. Keith Says:

    nice Coste!

    oo Bruntlett with bases loaded?

  42. ll Says:

seriously, charlie needs to have a “talk” with these guys more often if this is the way they play after it!!

  43. Tracey Says:

    WHEE!!!

  44. Tracey Says:

Hey, BJ! They’ve almost got those 10 runs for you!

  45. Tracey Says:

A Florida newspaper has the story in the incident between a Phillies player and a Rays fan. The paper reports it was Romero, who refused to give the fan an autograph. The fan responded with some smart-a$$ remarks about steroids, to the player who just got back from a 50-day suspension for a technical drug policy violation. See it here:
    http://www.tampabay.com/sports/baseball/ml/article1013913.ece

  46. Tracey Says:

And of course, the Rays fan, who is so seriously injured that he has time to give newspaper interviews, has hired a lawyer. (rolls eyes)

  47. A.J. Says:

Guess the Jays fans won’t be chanting “Phillies Suck”

  48. Tracey Says:

@AJ: Not unless they already have a lawyer lined up. :D

  49. DJ Says:

That guy is full of sh1t! And if he was heckling him after not getting autographs from Phillies players he deserved it! These players are still human beings

  50. Tracey Says:

It sounds like, even according to the “victim”, Romero didn’t do much more than shove him.

  51. Tracey Says:

Yeah, let’s keep in mind that the newspaper is only reporting the Rays fan’s side of the story; nobody on the Phillies side has said anything.

  52. Manny Says:

    WOW JAYSON WERTH!!!!!!!!

Told ya June would be a good month for him!

  53. Keith Says:

    WERTH!!!!!!!! again

  54. Tracey Says:

Woo hoo! But Jayson, you’ll never hit for the cycle if you keep hitting those HRs!

    And BJ: You’ve got your 10! :D

  55. Keith Says:

    he loves playing against Toronto

  56. DJ Says:

What is up with Werth? He is deinitely on a roll

  57. beta sigma shag Says:

So I just got home and no phillies game on tv in vermont, so all I got is the nation and mlb.com,
Someone said earlier that Happ was wild and hittable. 3 hits and 50 some pitches through 5 how is that either of those things. Bruntlet got a sac fly that is something positive offensivly. Lets just keep scoring runs and belive we can win today

  58. A.J. Says:

I guess Romero doesn’t like to give autographs

  59. Tracey Says:

Actually, it looks like nobody was giving out autographs at the time. The article says that “players” brushed the Rays fan off. This idiot just happens to have chosen to vent on Romero. Might as well rub a little salt in the fresh wound and see what happens.

  60. beta sigma shag Says:

so J Werth ;m;ust like hitting in the two hole, maybe we move Vic down to six or five to break up the lefties lol

  61. Tracey Says:

    Howard’s hot today too!

  62. A.J. Says:

beta sigma shag – yeah blacked out in SC too. I have XM on. These announcers hate the Phillies. You’d have thought we beat them in 1993.

  63. Tracey Says:

oof. Well, even the Phils would have a hard time blowing a 10 run lead in the 6th, right? RIGHT???

  64. beta sigma shag Says:

It is nice to score all these runs but like I asked the other night can’t we give some back and save them for another day,

  65. Tracey Says:

@AJ and Beta: I’m telling you, you need to plunk down the $15 for Gameday Audio. No blackouts, and you get the Phillies radio audio, which is better than the TV commentary anyway.

  66. beta sigma shag Says:

yea extra innings is a joke on saturday, which sucks cause it is my one real day off, and would like to see a game live instead on dvr, but they are winning and hitting so I am all good with that

  67. Tracey Says:

@Beta: hehehe. Yeah, we need some “rollover runs”

  68. Mazinman Says:

I think the guy asking for the autograph showed no consideration. I mean, the Phillies are going through the most frustrating period of the year and just finished a very annoying loss. I think its asking a bit much for the guy to expect J.C. to be all happy and willing to give autographs. If J.C. really did show the guy down then thats wrong but so is insulting him.

Good job again by Werth. Triples man, triples!

  69. Trent Holvick Says:

FIGHTIN PHILLS ARE BACK BABY!!! WERTH IS A BEAST!!!!!! im blacked out in Colorado too….its bull man…the one game where the phillies are dominating I have to miss it…well at least I have the PHILLIES Nation!

  70. beta sigma shag Says:

64 pitches into the 6th how wild could happ be today four hits how hittable is he, I am not sure I get that earlier coment, thanks tracey but I usually can not sit in front of computer during the games at work and should be playing golf right now, oh wait I am going to go now, good luck all talk to you after the game

  71. Manny Says:

The game isn’t on Extra Innings… BUT it is on CSN+ (Phillies Comcast feed)…. I have RCN Cable and it’s channel 371 … The description is “Off Air” ha

  72. beta sigma shag Says:

what woke up the bats today not that I am complaining, but it is either all or nothing with these guys, I will take all today, just hope for more than nothing tomorrow,

  73. Tracey Says:

I have the Gameday Audio mostly so I can listen to the day games at work. I’m on the computer most of my work day anyway. My bosses don’t mind me listening on the job, as long as I keep them up to date with the score and the big plays! :D

  74. beta sigma shag Says:

can happ go nine today will they let him if he has a shutout with only 6 hits

  75. Tracey Says:

He only has 75 pitches so far. He could get through 9…

  76. Manny Says:

I wouldn’t let him go 9 at this pace… he’s still a rookie and every inning counts… we’re gonna need him late this year too.

  77. beta sigma shag Says:

75 pitches should he go at least 8 what do you all think I like his line so far 5 hits 3 K’s and the best is 0 walks, but how can they leave 7 on base with onlly five hits and no walks

  78. Tracey Says:

He just finished 7 with only 88 pitches. I think he can certainly do 8.

  79. beta sigma shag Says:

88 pitches thru 7 pretty good, I still want to know how you get wild and hittable out of the line he has put up, two more K’s, seems like he is pretty strong in that inning, if he stays under 100 pitches does he go nine Manny

  80. Tracey Says:

Maybe let him do 8 and have Lidge pick up the 9th? I know it’s not a save situation, but he could use a major league outing that he can’t blow.

  81. Manny Says:

I’d like to see him pitch the 8th… then bring someone else for the 9th

  82. beta sigma shag Says:

did not want him to get his triple so they walked him hope they bat around and he does it in the niinth

  83. Tracey Says:

Uh… you know, if that was supposed to be an Amber Alert, it wasn’t very informative…

  84. Tracey Says:

OK, let’s see Mayberry get his first Major League Grand Slam! :D

  85. beta sigma shag Says:

just for shits and giggles Howard should rock one out just for the fun of it

  86. beta sigma shag Says:

so I am a little slow I would like to see a nice double by the kid here

  87. beta sigma shag Says:

dam the kid has got to take the bat off his shoulder especially up 10 -0 should be swinging at almost anything 0-2

  88. Tracey Says:

Tsk, that’s a shame, leave the bases loaded. Not that we need the runs, but it’s not a good habit to get into.

  89. beta sigma shag Says:

ok I Know it is a route, but is this not when we should be having some fun where did everyone go

  90. Tracey Says:

What, are they playing musical chairs?

  91. Tracey Says:

Well, at least we don’t have to worry about being harassed by any Mets fans today! hee hee.

  92. Manny Says:

8 innings of shutout baseball for Happ against the Blue Jay is pretty freaking impressive!!!!

  93. beta sigma shag Says:

peter happy playing second dobbs at third and brunlet at SS interesting, any reason to chase out there

  94. Tracey Says:

Happ finished the 8th; not sure what the pitch count was, because it’s not showing up on Gameday!

  95. Trent Holvick Says:

Happ is mowing these sorry a$$ blue jays down fast……good job happ keep up the good work

  96. Tracey Says:

Here we go: 93 pitches. He could do a CG, but why not let somebody else join the fun?

  97. ll Says:

i hope happ goes 9 – pitch count is low 90s i think

  98. beta sigma shag Says:

wow what did he pitch 5 pitches that inning, JA should definatly come out for the 9th give a a complete game shut out against a team that has crushed phillies pitching would be great for his head

  99. Manny Says:

93 pitches.. hmm… now I’m rethinking what I previously said… and say: let the guy get his first career shutout in the big leagues!!

  100. Tracey Says:

Yup, Happ is on in the 9th

  101. Tracey Says:

    One pitch, one out.

  102. Keith Says:

well that’s a quick first out

  103. Trent Holvick Says:

CMON HAPP ITS YOUR TIME BABY!!!!! COMPLETE GAME SHUTOUT!!!!!

  104. Tracey Says:

He hasn’t had a single inning with 15 or more pitches. Amazing.

  105. Mazinman Says:

    *Hands Ruden Amaro a Pencil.*

Ok, see where you see Bastardo’s name under “Untradable”? Go ahead and erase that. Yes, thats it, good job. Now where that was I want you to write “J.A. Happ”.

  106. Tracey Says:

    98 pitches, 9.2 innings.

  107. Keith Says:

    HAPP, Complete Game Shutout!

  108. Tracey Says:

    CG Shutout, 100 pitches.

  109. CT Says:

Ashburn should go to Happ and Werth

  110. Mazinman Says:

Woo! Best day in three weeks! Way to go Happ!

  111. beta sigma shag Says:

I think he should come out to the mound and K the side would be a nice finnish

  112. Trent Holvick Says:

WHOO WHOO…….This better boost the boys spirits! HELL YEA!!!

  113. beta sigma shag Says:

exactley 100 pitches shut out nine innings 5 hits 6?K?’s and no walks Happ for Ashburn, But Werth should get some consideration, but defintly Happ first complete game and shut out, those of you that could see it was he really pitching that well,

  114. Tracey Says:

@CT: Agreed, but if they can only have one person for the Ashburn, I’d go with Happ. That was the best starting pitching performance we’ve had this year, bar none. Werth definitely pulled up the batting end of the game, but we’ve had great batting games before; we haven’t had pitching like this.

  115. DJ Says:

Happ and Werth for the Ashburn! They both deserve it!

  116. Tracey Says:

Werth definitely had a great day.

  117. Tracey Says:

Happ is 5-0? I didn’t think his record was that good. But maybe his rough games he got a no-decision where others blew it later.

  118. beta sigma shag Says:

yea I never got how JA was tradable but Bastardo was not, JA has shown he has the make up to pitch in the big leagues, he will be a solid #3 pitcher for a long time hopfully, and has the posibilities to become a #2 if he keeps improving at this rate, it is only his first complete season, and went to the pen for the team, now is 5-0 with a compete game shut out under his belt.

  119. CT Says:

@Tracey: don’t forget about about Cole’s CG Shutout against the Dodgers. That was a 5-hitter too, I believe

  120. beta sigma shag Says:

it is Moyer tomorrow right, hope he has a good outing and we can take 2 out of 3 from these Jays, then onto Atlanta right and we owe them a beat down this time around. Would like at least 6 runs tomorrow and I think that will be enough

  121. Al in Seattle Says:

I nominate Werth and Happ for the Ashburn. Even though only one player gets it most of the time, Werth and Happ should get their own half of it.

  122. beta sigma shag Says:

I think after Cole’s blow up last night, he is going to come out and be great for the rest of the year, I am glad to see Charlie closed the doors and reamed them out last night, because it was almost embarassing to watch them play with no heart or heads for that matter, tomorrow’s game will be a good gauge if they got it go Moyer you are the man

  123. Manny Says:

It HAS to be both Happ and Werth!!

    Brilliant!!

  124. Griffin Says:

Props to Happ, maybe he’s better than I thought. He’s the 2nd best starter on the team right now and trading him now doesn’t make much sense.

The Phillies need a few more of these to get me excited, but at least they didn’t get swept. Go Yankees tonight.

  125. Manny Says:

I’ll say this: THANK GOD WE DIDNT TRADE HAPP FOR MARQUIS!!!!

  126. Georgie Says:

    No kiddin’, Manny!
