Gameday: Phillies (39-34) At Braves (35-40)
Posted by Amanda Orr, Tue, June 30, 2009 05:45 PM
Philadelphia Phillies (39-34) at Atlanta Braves (35-40)
Joe Blanton (4-4, 5.06 ERA) vs. Derek Lowe (7-6, 4.53 ERA)
Time: 7:00 p.m at Turner Field
Weather: Sunny, 90
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The Phillies are happy interleague play is over after posting a 6-12 record against the American League. They head to Turner Field, where they were a perfect 9-0 last season. They’ll have to extend their win streak against Derek Lowe, who shutout the Phillies in eight innings back in April.
Joe Blanton was roughed up by the Braves earlier this year. In 12 innings, his ERA is 9.75 and Braves hitters are batting .321 against him this season.
Jimmy Rollins is back in the starting lineup, and out of all the Phillies hitters, Rollins has the most success against Lowe. He is batting .304 against Lowe in his career. On the other hand, Brian McCann is 6-for-7 with 2 home runs and six RBI against Blanton.
With Rollins back in the lead-off spot, the rest of the lineup looks like this: Rollins (SS)/ Victorino (CF)/ Utley (2B)/ Howard (1B)/ Werth (RF)/ Dobbs (LF)/ Feliz (3B)/ Ruiz (C)/ Blanton (P).
Your Gameday Beer- Today’s beer is Red Rocket Ale. Careful, this Amber/Red Ale is on fire. Its deep cinnamon color makes for a beautiful pour so be sure to release it from the bottle. Its hoppy, caramel malt flavor comes from a complex recipe of five different grains. If you can, roast a chicken with all the fix-ins. -By Brian
Go Phillies!

Plain and simple, J Roll needs a hit in his first AB. He needs to start off quickly. It’s do or die.
June 30th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
I know he has more power than Vic, but Werth has been on fire out of the two hole, why not leave him there, isn’t Vic enough protection for Howard.
I mean I get Werth in the five spot, but why not leave him in two, he sees alot of pitches, and has good speed, and can move runners along as well as Vic right?
I feel JB will be fine against the Braves tonight, their O has been struggling of late, I posted earlier I think 4 runs wins it for the Phillies.
GO PHILLIES
Not sure if I am going to get through the entire night at work waiting to get home to watch the game on DVR, but I am going to try, so have a good game and be positive please, no JB haters allowed tonight just positive vibes, and let us not dam JRoll if he does not get a hit in his first ab, let the game play out before all your Rollins haters chime in,
June 30th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
JB has only given up more than 2 ER once in his last 6starts that i pretty good, seeing his record of 2-1 in those six starts means the phillies need to score the good ole boy some runs
June 30th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
agreed that i’d like to see werth bat 2 – he seems to like it there. also, just hoping that jimmy hits anything but a popup…even a ground ball would be better!
June 30th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
It’s going to be a HOT time tonight (literally and figuratively) in Atlanta as balls may be flying out of the park.
Gallen… “Its do or die” (for Rollins). That’s funny…(laughing)
Let’s go Phillies!
June 30th, 2009 at 6:36 pm
@Shag: I was at the WS game when JB hit the home run. I have nothing but love for Joe the Lumber.
June 30th, 2009 at 6:39 pm
Bruce: didnt mean that figuratively. But is it not? I feel like he needs to get hot early to shut the detractors up.
June 30th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
I’m pretty optimistic with Fat Joe on the mound today, he’s been very solid lately. Lowe is very good against our lineup but he’s having a rough stretch, so maybe we can capitalize on that.
June 30th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
We beat Lowe once, only that was Pat the Bat, so we can hope…
June 30th, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Blanton has a 5.06 ERA
June 30th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Hey! Jimmy didn’t swing at the first pitch! (OK, it was a strike, but still…)
June 30th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Glad Jimmy took those first pitches. He listened.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Not going to lie, wish we had Derek Lowe.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
I’m feeling pretty good about tonight. Lowe has been a bit of a disappointment this year and Blanton is pitching much better of late.
Werth is on fire, but with a tough righty on the mound, I’m ok with him hitting 5th instead of 2nd.
Go Phils.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
ok so I am already bored at work raining windy and thunder storms so no one is coming out to eat, Fat Joe’s ERA is high cause his first few outing were rough, his last six he has been on fire only once gave up 4 runs, then i believe it was 2 1 0 2 2 so that is pretty dam good.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
Tch, still chasing the balls.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
well he did not pop out, but he will have 3 more at bats to redeam himself
June 30th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
I stuck with MLB until i can re watch the game on DVR tonight.
lets go CHASE
June 30th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
@Shag: Yeah, JB’s recent losses were due to lack of Phils hitting, not bad pitching.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Quick inning.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
It would be nice to see Lowe throw alot of pitches early
June 30th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Great start J-Roll, if youre trying to get traded
June 30th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
The Phils are chasing a lot of bad pitches tonight. The Gameday Pitch-by-Pitch is showing that a lot of these swings were at balls that were low or outside.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
OK Joe it is your turn 1 2 3 please, can everyone tell I am truly bored to death at work tonight. I am ready for some shag beta sigma delta bashing where is Geoff, and Dipsy when I need them
June 30th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
@Shag: Sh!
June 30th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
they showed the graphic on blanton vs. the braves
2gs
12ip
13er
wheels said blanton has pitched “okay” vs. atlanta. what would he consider terrible??
June 30th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
THere is the JRoll hater I was looking for hi Geoff, nice to see mr negativity on here again.
JB throw 5 straight fastballs to start
June 30th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Oh, BEAUTIFUL catch, Werth!
June 30th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Both of those pitches were outside. We’ve really got to stop chasing the balls.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
THAT’S what I’m talking about. Patience…
June 30th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Whee!
June 30th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
had to go nice to see big Joe 1 2 3 like I asked him to do
June 30th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
aw…
June 30th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
that sucked
June 30th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
dam wasted opportunity with base loaded Oh well we will get to him
June 30th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
can I ask why Werth did not score on the double from first did he have to hold up or what
June 30th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
That sucked and now Blanton has to lead off next inning.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
*WOW*
June 30th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
game day is so dam slow, maybe i should just suck it up and go find something to do and just watch the game when i get home
June 30th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
wow what tracey
June 30th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
I think big joe brought his hitting stick tonight watch out
June 30th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
nice yakker blanton
June 30th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
i will wait till the end of the second inning then find something to do
June 30th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Hmn… yeah, considering there’s only been one hit, it’s taking a long time to get through 2.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
francouer-watch the low strikes blanton
June 30th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
@Shag: the “wow” was a running catch by Victorino.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
there goes Joes no hitter
laughing
June 30th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
ok can thanks I will look forward to watching it in two hours smiling
June 30th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
Ugh. Awful play by Werth.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
@Shag: Also look forward to a great catch by Werth in the 1st, but a lousy play in the field in the 2nd.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
dam big Joe settle down and get these guys out please
June 30th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
I dont know about that, IBB the guys is hitting 130 you can not get this guy out and let the pitcher lead off next inning it is way to early for this move with two outs what is up with that
June 30th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
That’s the inning. Shag: when you watch it on DVR, you should pull up the blog comments and read along with the plays.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
Why the hell did he walk Diory Hernandez? He’s got a lower average than Lowe?
June 30th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
they did not score so that was good, but any disagree with me
June 30th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
Blanton is wearing out their pitcher.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
still a good ab from mighty joe
June 30th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
poor Rollins
June 30th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Seriously Jimmy?
June 30th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
SHANE!
June 30th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
keith-yeah, an ex-AL pitcher has a better AB then JRoll.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
Jeez Jimmy
June 30th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
The plate is the other way, Derek. Let’s move ahead.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Whoosh! I didn’t think Utley was going to get a hit. OK, now it’s time for RYAN!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
alright Howard!
June 30th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
Woo hoo! Phillies get first blood!
June 30th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
Good Job Howard!
June 30th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Ah well. Phils are winning. I have to run an errand, but I’ll be back.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
At least we got one.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
61 pitches through 3 for Lowe.
June 30th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
ugh a triple.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
right on scheledule… seems like Chipper gets injured around this time every year
June 30th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
that’s how to hit a sinkerballer -good hitting Feliz
June 30th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
glad to see feliz remembered how many outs there were
June 30th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
Sheesh, can’t I leave the Phils unwatched for a MINUTE without them giving up a run???
June 30th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
poor Rollins lol, better AB though
June 30th, 2009 at 8:27 pm
Boy Rollins is on fire…Please put him down to the 6th spot uncle charlie or just bench him again. LOL…Doesnt work.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:29 pm
Who’s injured?
June 30th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
UTLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
Chase!!
June 30th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
YES!!!! CHASE!!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 8:32 pm
Dave, Lowe had an injury delay but he’s fine.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
aww it’s tied again
June 30th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
WTF?? We can’t keep a lead.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:35 pm
This game is killing me.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
Cant you hold a dam lead
June 30th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
(hangs head in shame) I left the room again.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
ut oh
June 30th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
oh boy, bases loaded
June 30th, 2009 at 8:40 pm
(sigh)
June 30th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
That’ it! I’ve had it with Rollins! He’s hopeless! He’s done! Trade him, waive him, cut him, etc….I don’t care!
June 30th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
as Keith said, ut oh.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
J-Roll is not hopeless. if we traded every player who has problems we’d be the Pirates
June 30th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
that might be it for Blanton
June 30th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Whew. OK, now we have to score a few runs and get a real lead that sticks…
June 30th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
ugh…rollins looks horrible, blanton is overpitching but getting out of jams and chase utley continues his great hitting.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
(ew… I wish they wouldn’t play that Geico commercial with the Michael Jackson music in it…)
June 30th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Bench J-Roll until the all-star break though. Hate to say it… I almost don’t care if we lose first right now. Even if we win, we won’t win it all playing like this. As long as it isn’t the Mets.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
@ Dave- i was joking about Chipper Jones…during an earlier AB he looked like he tweaked something…took a slow walk back to dug out after striking out. He just always seems to get hurt around this time…Obviously he wasn’t that hurt to score that 3rd run but i wouldn’t be suprised if he was put on the DL or sat tomorrow.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Blanton has 93 pitches already. He may be due for a trip to the showers.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
The song in the commercial is a remix by Mysto & Pizzi, but the original is by Rockwell
June 30th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
well hes pretty much useless now so who ever ponies it up can grab him. change of scenery would help
June 30th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
1st ab this 1/2 inning….Kotchman — picks it clean
1st ab last 1/2 inning….Rollins —- picks his a$$
if you hit .209 you have to field it clean jroll
June 30th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
FELIZ!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Mets 2; Brew Crew 0
June 30th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
@MP: Rockwell wrote the song and sang the verses, but the “somebody’s watching me” refrain was sung by Michael Jackson.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
no trading Rollins
June 30th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Ah, they play it at CBP all the time on the Phanta Vision phan camera
June 30th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Blanton night is done.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
bye Blanton, his ERA goes up 2 points: 5.08 now
June 30th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
I’m hungry for some Phillies runs
June 30th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Keith – Geoff and Greg V. would trade their own family if they did not perform
June 30th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Coste PHing? Really?
June 30th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
I know the bullpen is tired but pinch hit charlie, you old geezer. two men on and blanton is worst then my uncle teddy
June 30th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Mets 2 Brew Crew 1
June 30th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
and Rollins still won’t admit anything is wrong… steroids must have made him crazy.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
I’m hungry for another Wild Pitch
June 30th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
Coste likes the ball low, so this may work… The wild pitch helps.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
argy
June 30th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
now we have to pray that durbin holds the score.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
timb – perhaps steroids would make you a better writer
June 30th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
I didn’t get fed this is upsetting
June 30th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
M.P.- yeah the pirates were at it again:
according to MLB.com “The Nationals traded reliever Joel Hanrahan and outfielder Lastings Milledge to the Pirates for reliever Sean Burnett and outfielder Nyjer Morgan on Tuesday afternoon.” However, I don’t think they will give up any of those SPs without starting a riot among Pirates faithfull and esp. with only 5 behind the NLC leaders.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
j reed – I listened to XM the whole way home. Theor GM is saying they want to rebuild with a championship team. So they took two of the Nats problems and traded some veterans.
June 30th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, Cris Coste is an awful major league player.
I don’t want to come across as purely pessimistic, but why on G-d’s green Earth would you trust Cris Coste to knock in the game-tying run. He looks awful with his stance, has 0 balance, and looks like he has no clue what the next pitch is.
I hate Chris Coste
June 30th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
well we got Rollins to start the next inning
June 30th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
Keith – at least he won’t be up at a critical point. I’ll take my chances with Coste there
June 30th, 2009 at 9:01 pm
Santana is struggling, but keeping at 2-1
June 30th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
web gem by Feliz!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
whoa feliz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
Pedro!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
NICE PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
I do not feel like going to the game on Thursday now
June 30th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
why M.P?
June 30th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
But nice play by Feliz, doesn’t help though with the 3-2 deficit
June 30th, 2009 at 9:05 pm
I am just disgusted with the way they are [not] playing
June 30th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
ugh another 1 pitch Rollins AB, poor guy
June 30th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
M.P. – yep…rebuilding for the last 17 yrs.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
Plus I am forced to watch the Braves feed because I live down here. And now this… At least it was the top of the inning.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
brand new pitcher, could be tight, brain dead jroll swings at the first pitch and pops up
June 30th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
ugh Jimmy. He is horrible. We might have to start looking for another SS
June 30th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Oh, well done for Jimmy. Another 1-pitch out!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
j reed – Yup, started in 1993. Sad for the Pirates fans, not the Pittsburgh sports fan, but the PIRATE’s fans
June 30th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
well this inning sucks
June 30th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
We don’t need a SS, you all have me defending Jimmy and I am not even a Jimmy fan!
We need Dan Haren
June 30th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Jimmy obviously learned nothing in his time off.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
two 1 pitch outs . . .
June 30th, 2009 at 9:09 pm
Mets still 2; Brew crew still 1
June 30th, 2009 at 9:09 pm
bad inning.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
did it occur to the 2 fastest guys on the team to maybe, i dunno …lay down a bunt seeing we have a one run lead
June 30th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
j reed – didn’t we discuss this the other night? I am all for Howard laying one down the third base line with that shift. I watched Carlos Pena do it the other night, and he got on. Guess what, they stopped shifting on him after that. SMALL BALL right now
June 30th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
Well, I am off to bed. I shall see you all Friday. I may be at the game Thursday, if I still care…
June 30th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
hmm
June 30th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
i meant, “…seeing the Braves only have a 1 run lead”
June 30th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
Feliz is having a great night in the field!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Why are the swinging at first pitch.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
lets get mayberry in the mix.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
MAYBERRRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:22 pm
YES YES YES!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
who called a little mayberry in the mix? he kills lefties. should start against them, sorry vic.
yeah!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
PEDRO!!!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
BACK TO BACK JACKS
June 30th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Pedro!!!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
FELIZ!!!!!!!
so much for that Braves stat
June 30th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
LA sounds hammertime.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
that stat was bad luck. how long until t-mac mentions the fans in bala cynwood movie theatre??
June 30th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
brew crew bases loaded one out, 2-1 mets
June 30th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
NICE NICE NICE
I love mayberry and feliz is so under rated.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
haha nice Braun
June 30th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
5-2 brew crew
June 30th, 2009 at 9:29 pm
Brewers 5-2
June 30th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
did the mets make like 4 errors that inning? three on one play?
June 30th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
nice back to back bombs
June 30th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
M.P.- Yep, I saw the same play and it was the AL HR leader at that. I liked it. I won’t harp too much on jroll over the the outs to Lowe but that last AB was dumb…he needs to realize that pitchers have adjusted to him and that their is no shame in becoming a contact hitter who hits what he is given. I think that Charlie and Milt’s hitting philosphy is not what the doctor ordered….He needs to become more of thinking small ball player as there is power aplenty in the line-up.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
marlins go ahead 6-5
June 30th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
oh crud
June 30th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
OMG!!! I can’t believe this is happening.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
We can’t we hold a lead??
June 30th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Hell.
Although that walk was BS.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
talk about errors…ugly baseball
June 30th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
You know, I was about to go to bed, and I was happy we went up 4-3. I am the biggest phan of all, but who the hell on this site said Madson was a closer?
June 30th, 2009 at 9:38 pm
All Rollins had to do was walk in either the 3 or 5th inning, and we would have 5 runs. Way to go J-Roll another 0-4 outing for the leadoff hitter.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
I am not blaming J-Roll now. This is all #46
June 30th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
um Florida is second place at this point.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
Grrr, Madson!!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
blah blah
June 30th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
j reed – we will get it right. luckily the Mutts are playing worse. This is disgusting for the World Champs though.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Well blaming Madson for some, however if J-Roll would have gotten a walk, a single ANYTHING in either the 3 or 5th inning we would still be winning. If this goes to extras like this, this is on Rollins.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
J.C Romero??
June 30th, 2009 at 9:40 pm
Is that a Bako sighting?
June 30th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
maybe Rollins will get a hit next inning
June 30th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
The Braves announcers want a wild pitch or error on us. Sounds like they are a bt bitter about 9-0 last year.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
this always happens – the pitcher gets 2 outs so easily and then it all goes wrong after that…
June 30th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
So glad to see J-Roll used those 4 days off to right himself…
June 30th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
What in the world is wrong with Werth tonight that he cannot seem to cleanly field the balls hit down in the right field corner?
June 30th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Bako HBP, Rollins HBP, Victorino triple?
June 30th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
aaah the shift works for us for a change.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Brian – we agree 99% of the time – but if this goes into extras it is on Madson. He is the setup man.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
yeah..werth went a little crazy trying to get that ball
June 30th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
wow. apparently the mets only have 1 error.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Bako needs to get hit by a pitch
June 30th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
If movies and TV have taught us anything, Rollins comes up with the big hit this inning.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Nate – A costly Santana error; bases were loaded, Braun hit it hard and Santana threw it into left field on his slide to third… Bases clearing triple and error 4-run hit.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
maybe rollins will actually do something this at bat
June 30th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Morris – for Jimmy’s sake I hope he smacks it out of here and Lidge closes.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
come on Bako
June 30th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Well, after having an absolutely miserable day, I’d hoped to settle in for a great game and a brand new, refreshed Jimmy. Oh well….
June 30th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Is it just me or does it seem like the Phillies don’t care? Like last year, no matter what we, or atleast I always felt the Phillies were never out of it. This year, no matter what I feel like the Phillies are never in it, or I am just waiting for the other shoe to drop. It seems like they have no fire. That lazy pick off attempt by Madson and Howard is a prime example of what I am talking about.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Bako gave it a ride
June 30th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
oh well, close enough Bako
June 30th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Jimmy can redeem himself by hitting a HR.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
the rain is INSANE in florda right now. if that storm was there 30 minutes earlier maybe the nats get the win
June 30th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Rollins took a pitch!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Ed – they care, they are just all struggling and trying TOO hard. This man here (Jimmy) is the key.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
mikeB-there are no lights along the back of the Turner Stadium Acording to Wheels, many visiting outfielders have complained about how its darker than usual all the warning track.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Jimmy has a nice variety of outs tonight, K, fly out, 2 ground outs.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
j reed – I will report back on that after Thursday
June 30th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Regardless of the outcome, this is Jimmy’s best at bat in some time
June 30th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
mike b.- that’s “….darker than usual along the warning track.”
June 30th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Since Johan Santana made the error, does that mean he has to get a mirror so that he can give himself the stink eye when he comes off the field?
June 30th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
poor Rollins
June 30th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
He swings at ball 4!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Rollins needs to bat 6th or 7th.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
0-5 jimmy, go back to the bench for 4 more games.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
That still was the best at bat, as ugly as strike 3 was. He fought off close pitches and took a few. I can live with that one. Swinging on first pitch – no
June 30th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Rollins – what a joke. Nothing but a drain on this club right now.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Morris, he like to oogle in the mirror so perhaps…
June 30th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
well that inning sucked, I blame it on Cairo
June 30th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
I say trade Rollins while you still can get a decent player or too foe him. He is stinking up the lineup
June 30th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
David Murphy tweeted this: With Rollins at the plate, Braves fans chanting “2-0-8!, 2-0-8!” in reference to his average, which has dropped with an 0/4 night
June 30th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
I say trade Rollins while you still can get a decent player or too for him. He is stinking up the lineup
June 30th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
You are right MP, I am sure they care, it just doesn’t seem like it. I think people underestimate what Burrell brought to the team from a club house stand point. Now I am not saying that they should have resigned Burrell isntead of Ibanez but what Burrell did in the club house was pretty important. He was not a very vocal guy but when he did speak up the team listened and he was known to do it from time to time. I almost feel like the Phillies don’t have any leaders, or at least not guys who have a right to say anything. Take J-Roll and Moyer, two supposed leaders in the club house are both having miserable seasons. Clearly J-Roll really can’t call anyone out or say anything when he is hitting a ridiculous 212 or whatever it is. Anyone else see this or am I just nuts?
June 30th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Mets committed another error. Santana way over 100 pitches and in the 6th
June 30th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
bat rollins 8th. for the love of everything holy.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
you are correct M.P we agree 99% of the time, however if Rollins did his job just once today we would still be winning. I am done with J-Roll honestly. Completely done with a leadoff hitter who has a BA of .207.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
If movies and Tv have taught us anything, Jimmy makes a big play in the field and then comes up with a big hit in the 11th.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
And an OBS of about .250.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
Don’t bat Rollins at all he is terrible.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Brian and Ed,
I am NOT a Jimmy fan, I like Lidge. I would not normally defend Jimmy except I cannot go along with him being the drag. I am peeved about the way the whole team is playing right now. I am not ready to blame Jimmy alone yet. That is not to say I won’t – just not yet. When everyone else improves and he drags them down, I will agree. Look, we should be about 10 games up. Regardless if MY guy blew 6 saves, which we lost 4, we still should have about 6 more games than that.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Nice play, prediction is 50% complete.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Well, Jimmy makes a good play!!
June 30th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Thats the type of play that a .207 hitting SS needs to make.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Rollins is still my fav player
June 30th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
No way in hell should a leadoff hitter have that kind of average. Trade him or send him down he is washed up.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Okay – he can still play defense.
June 30th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
That is why I defend Jimmy. For that reason alone.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
I am so sick of the negativity on this. I give up
June 30th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Thats fine Keith. Paul Molitor is still my favorite player and at 50 i bet he could still hit better than .207
June 30th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Don’t get me wrong, this is clearly not just a Jimmy issue, or a Lidge issue though they are two of the bigger disappointments this year. And don’t get me wrong, I didn’t expect Lidge to be perfect again, or close to it. I figured a blown save here or there, ERA in the 3-4 range, maybe 6 blown saves all year. But it’s not just him. The time has been mis managed a ton, they don’t run anymore, their bench wouldn’t be good enough to start for the Threshers, their rotation hasn’t put together more than two turns in the rotation of solid pitching, their pen is depleted with injuries, all that and they are still 2.5 up. I think we have gotten mighty lucky but luck runs out eventually. We need to fix or patch our problems now while the rest of the division is playing like garbage and pray we turn it on sooner rather than later.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Morris, nice call, half way there!
June 30th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
Defense means nothing if you can’t hit the ball. Hey I have an idea let the Mets have him they have a bunch of want a be’s playing for them.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
I hate the toahawk song. This would be the time Frenchy decides to smack one
June 30th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Ed, I will go along with you there. No argument. I do think rtbamam is full of horse**** to use an Ozzie Guillen term
June 30th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Chan Ho might be the best most hated man in Philadelphia we have ever had.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
This guy’s ERA is 13.50, looks good
June 30th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Morris, no way. No ****** way.
Scott Rolen
JD Drew
Joe Carter
Billy Wagner
The ex-catcher we have on Toronto
June 30th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
well he just made his ML debut
June 30th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
And the entire New York met team dating back to 1965; we liked the 62-64 Mets
June 30th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
Here comes a bold statement- Albert Pujols is a heck of a baseball player. 30 HR’s 31 SO’s. That is rediculous.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
well my fav player before Rollins was Burrell, but he left so I had to replace him with Rollins
June 30th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
There we go; shame he is slow
June 30th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
I’d love Puljos if he were a Phillie. I can’t forgive him for hitting Lidge’s pitch into Canada
June 30th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
M.P. again we agree 99% of the time, I also like Lidge, but realisitically, with those blown saves for Lidge, I can recall 3 that were completely BS. one was an error which lead to a run and a blown save, the other was a homer to right field in Yankees stadium. the error is a fact of baseball, and when we commit errors they come in bunches, just like today, but had that error not been committed by Feliz, that was a win, another was an error on Utley throwing home, again win, the other was a homer that BARELY made it out at Yankees stadium to right field. A homer to right field in Yankees stadium is BS. Those were 3 I do not place on Lidge, however the other thing about Lidge, he should have been placed on the DL long before he was. He was VERY noticeably off after he hurt his knee and looks much better now.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
im sorry keith but you picked a bad time to elevate jimmy’s status to your favorite player. i love the guy but bat him 6th, 7th or 8th and let him bat with some people on base.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Yea, but Chan Ho actually helps out the Phillies and all people do is complain about him.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
oh no, werth and mayberry against righties. damn, they found their weakness
June 30th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
I also re-watched that game when Pujols hit the homer against Lidge in that game. He catches all sorts of hell for that game when we was with the Astros, but watch it again. there were 2 outs, and a ground ball which by MOST SS’s, especially our horrible offensensive but great defensive SS would have been the third out. Had he had a good SS for that game, he would have had the save.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Brian – we agree there. I accept criticism for his BS, and I remember the errors and all that led to a few. I blame him for trying to ‘play through it’ when it cost us games, but I admire his duration. The worst part is I should be worrie about the Fish, but I care more about the Mets losing than the Phillies winning.
That sucked.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
oh well
June 30th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
guarding the line.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
At least Werth walked today which is far more than J-Roll did. Again, had J-Roll walked in the 3rd or 5th inning, we would be commenting on a much needed win since the Marlins are playing the Nats. Instead we have to wonder if we can pull it off, which I think we lost that never say die attitude honestly.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Brian – Albert hit his HANGING slider. Felt bad for Lidge then; I wanted Houston to win that series – even though they did, I felt bad.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
I 100% agree with that, If I had to choose between the fish winning, or the Mets, I would choose the fish. I HATE the Mets.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Morris – I won’t criticize him now. Last year, I gave up on Myers, and I vowed I would never give up on anyone again until it was over. Ever since then I am cautious about being too critical.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
True, but he gave up a homer against arguably the best all around hitter in MLB in the last decade, yet he NEVER would have been pitching to Pujols if Lidge had a good SS to get that ball.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
meanwhile, i feel sorry for the pirates again, they traded guys that were decent but making no money for guys that SUCK and are making no money.
hanrahan/milledge for morgan/burnett – WOW, what a crappy trade for the pirates
June 30th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Brian, I said this before and I will stay on record. If we DESERVE to lose, and the Fish take it, I will sadly pull for them. If the Mets take it, I will root for A-Roid and the yankees before I’d ever root for a Met. Heck, I will pull for Canseco and McGuire being in the HOF before I would root for any Met(s) to win anything.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Geoff – Pirates shut out the Cubblies
June 30th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
thankfully rollins is still a great defensive shortstop
June 30th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
Ok, just don’t attempt to pick him off.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
terrible job mayberry, have to get to that ball quicker
June 30th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Johan gabe up another HR to Fielder
June 30th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
two OUTSTANDING points by M.P and Geoff. I will never root for the Mets, and J-Roll no matter how HORRIBLE he is offensively, he is still the best defensive SS. I just really wish he could have at least walked in the 3rd or 5th inning.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
I know they did…but still. how many times can they do this? freddy sanchez is next to go…they really need to pick a group and stick with it.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Game Over
June 30th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Did someone on this website complement Chan Ho Park?
June 30th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Nice team loss there.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Oh well, one for the Braves. We have two more to try and take. As long as we win 2… We played badly anyway.
Mets are down, Fish are down, so let’s hope.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Awful loss.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Another tough loss. We should have won this one.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
That’s the freakin’ Trifecta of my day.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
bad loss. jimmy shutout at the plate. 4 runs was enough to win that game if the late relievers hadnt failed yet again
June 30th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Chan Ho has been their best arm from the bullpen for two months now.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
I did – Other than this he did OK. These things happen. Brian is right, if others did more it never would have gotten this far. Team loss… Chan Ho was just the one who gave it up
June 30th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
thats like being the tallest midget morris. sorry to any midgets posting on the site. its just a phrase.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
I don’t think I’d pin this one on Chan Ho, it was a team effort.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
ed- i agree, the team seems a little rudderless…Charles Barkely said the Phils are too passive and I agree, its the downside of allowing players to police themselves. I used to laugh @ Varitek’s “C”, but the Red Sox have a more discplined and a heady approach to the game than we do, and I can’t help not think he a plays a part in it . What the Red Sox realize is that in 162 games talent alone is not enough to overcome the Law of Averages. Smart play and small ball (not to mention their rotation) is how you do this. I get weary of all the psychology I here ad nauseum through out baseball … “we need to relax…their pressing…” yadda yadda. It gets a little Oprah for me. Play hard and play smart.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
That loss hurts a lot. For some reason I thought the Phillies would win it once it went into extra innings. Silly me.
I know Madson will probably get the Jeltz, but 5 innings and 3ER and 2 blown leads from Blanton is not good enough. Blanton for the Jeltz.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
0 for the 24 is JRoll! I mean I love Jimmy but Vic should be leading off and all the trade Victorino people he hit .400 against the AL during Interleague and he still has the scrappyness to want to win it all!
June 30th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Terri – Well, yes and no. We should have because it was a blown save, but we barely showed up. So yes and no. I am disgusted the way this is going right now. I want us to be the 09 WFCs so bad, but just like last year… Worst part is on June 30 of last year we were doing worse.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
At least Eli and friends aren’t showing
June 30th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
This team just does not seem to play with any fire. Everybody seems to have a “ehh, somebody else will take care of it” attitude. They are starting to look like the Mets.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
The phils really need to do something about Jimmy Rollins. If it weren’t for his defense he would not be playing in the majors. He is hitting .207 Horrible and unacceptable. They have been struggling the whole month of June. If the NL East did not suck so much the Phils would probably be in 3rd place. Maybe July will be a better month.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Truly a team loss. Not a great effort tonight.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
I agree almost – I think the opposite – they expected it to be easier this year and now they find themselves the targets and trying to hard to prove their ‘worth’
My take. I could be wrong.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Morris – no where close to the Mets, our Fielding percentage is honorable. We just have no fire. We are the Limpin Phillies not the Phightin Phillies.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
When this funk breaks – watch out
June 30th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Chan Ho got the loss, but he has been solid for the last month or so. Everyone gets hit sometime.
This was a team loss. Jimmy and Co need to wake up.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
MP, I would have agreed, but the Phils had 3 lazy errors tonight.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Martin Prado should pull down Jimmy Rollins’ pants, then point and laugh at him. Go Braves!
June 30th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Morris, no where close tot he Mets though. They have 3 per inning at times LOL
June 30th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
no way, blanton for the Jeltz…Madson gets it for trying to pick someone off with 2 outs and what was it an 0-2 or 1-2 count. Dumb baseball.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Cheeses – now we don’t bother you, go laugh at the Mets or something. That should make you feel better.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Does anyone really know what to do about Jimmy? What is the answer? I dont know what to say or think about it! Anyone got the answer?
June 30th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
j reed – agreed. Let them run at that point and throw the damn change up
June 30th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
In regards to what to do about Jimmy, I agree with the idea of pulling his pants down and spanking him.
June 30th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Met down by 4 top of the 9th; so no Eli later tonight either
June 30th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Have the Phillies won any game in which Mayberry hit a homer? They lost the Yankees game, the Blue Jays game and tonight’s game. When was the other homer?
June 30th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Ooops, Mets down by 3 now
June 30th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Morris, I will leave the spanking alone… That is your department. The Brew Crew cannot get that third out.
No clue if they won or not…
June 30th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
The rookie pitcher beat Santana, Mets losing makes up for the Phillies any day. Wow… Ok, I am off to bed now
June 30th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
Via Jayson Stark’s twitter:
Ryan Madson since June 16: 9.52 ERA, 3 blown saves, 1 loss that wasn’t a blown save, 16 baserunners in 5 2/3 IP
Suffice to say Madson been struggling abit
June 30th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Sean – you don’t say?
June 30th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Goats of tonight’s game: Rollins and Madson.
Madson in the 8th, you have two outs and a 1-2 count on the batter, why are you weird about the runner on first? If you get prado the inning is over instead you throw over and the next pitch would have been a ground out if he didn’t throw over becuase howard would be playing right next to the bag.
Rollins 0-5 at the plate, 0-24 Two times he made outs on first pitch swinging, he cost the phils the braves third run booting chipper’s grounder. I hate to say but looking at his stats it would not surprise me one bit to find out he was juicing from the middle of the 05 season until halfway through the 07 season.
If i were Amaro I would see what the market is like for Rollins and give the shortstop position to Harman or Donald.
June 30th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
M.P. – Madson was a starter at one time and has to have another pitch that with a little work he could use. The league has caught up to the new Madson, a little more variety might help…i think that’s been Hamels problem as well. Fastball/change-up pitchers have there pitch counts worked with foul balls … a good yakker would help. Hamels has been working on it and has had some success, but needs to go with more. Plain fact is the change-up is to this era of baseball as the “low and away” two seamer was to the 90’s. Batters are more ready for it esp. when you only really have two pitches. Don’t get me wrong, keeping it simple works but when it doesn’t or the oppostion has adjusted their game, you need another variable to swing the odds in your favor.
June 30th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
I agree that Madson was bad, but don’t forget the short and crappy performance by Blanton tonight.
June 30th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
sweet j-roll. i agree with the comment about the variety of different ways to get out that he pursued.
June 30th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
Also, we need more quality starts. seriously. wtf
June 30th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
Hey is anyone watching the O’s comeback from 10 to 1 in the bot of the 7th to take a 11 to 10 lead in the bot of the 8th
July 1st, 2009 at 12:02 am
Chooch Ruiz is really struggling at the plate recently too. BA is .243 and was 0 for 4 with 6 runners left on base. Does not appear that he has that confidence that he had earlier in the season. Werth also 0 for 4 with 3 men left on base. Along with Rollins tonight, these 3 Phils did not get the job done offensively.

mikeB, true, HOWEVER, at least Werth walked once, which is more than J-Roll did, and while Ruiz was also atrocious at the plate, his average is still .243, J-Roll’s average is .207, and will more than likely be under .200 by the end of the week. There is a reason people always say the “Heart of the lineup is the top of the lineup” The top of the lineup are the ones who are supposed to win it for you. Ruiz struggling is piddly junk since he is NOT supposed to in the top of the lineup. J-Roll always talks and wants people to think he is a lead off hitter, and shouldnt be anywhere else, but really of all the starters on the Phillies he is ranked 8th in batting average. Thats not counting the bench players some worse, some better. So what that means is the ever LOUD J-Roll has the WORST batting average of starters on the Phillies, and one of the worst averages in MLB for starters and lead off hitters. I never had a problem with J-Roll opening his trap because he backed it up on the field. Now, he is full of hot air. ALL talk, no action.

Doug- keep in mind that JRoll was 27 or 28 years old when he won the MVP. This is the age that many players put up their best numbers. And the pattern of his past numbers show, for a player of his caliber, a resonable progression to his MVP performance. While the relative power outage of the following year hints to steroid use, the league adjusting to him easily explains the decrepancies. Think about it: most MVPs are power hitters who are not lead off guys, JRoll is an exception to the rule. And, where do these prototypical MVP’s bat, in the middle of the line-up where they get protection. Once he put up those numbers why would anyone give him anything to hit….would you? If he started drawing walks, they would, but so long as he doesn’t., no one will give him his pitch. Jimmy’s woes come from the fact that when he’s not leading off (which by the way usually is once or twice a game) he’s batting after the pitcher’s spot and in front of the two hole and this not the spot in the line-up to take a power hitters approach. JRolls problem as with many talented athletes, is he’s overly intuitve, relying on god given abilities and not the more calculated, strategic aspects of the game. Bottom line is he needs to hit what he is given or be dropped in the line-up where once protected by other hitters he can look for his pitch. Unfortuanately, JRoll as a lead-off hitter is better suited for AL play where there is less slack in the line-up. It’s time for the coaches to turn him into a contant hitter because no one in the line-up except for Feliz too slow is truly suited for the job. Shane could if he wasn’t so impulsive. Otherwise, if things continue as is I think it will ruin our chances in the post season. Donald is unavailable. Injuried.

no way even though he went 0-4 JRoll had nothing to do with the loss, it is on Madson, how do you walk a guy in the 8th, and where was Stairs tonight you can pinch him instead of Balko and Balko can still go in and catch. Walks, then throwing over to first for no reason. But Blanton did ok some rough innings,
Cole will get them tomorrow I believe it

I would say its about time our Ace starts acting like ours ace, besides of course when he pitches in LA. Cole seems to LOVE LA, but no where else this season.

FYI beta, J-Roll was 0-5, Werth went 0-4 with a walk. However, had J-Roll walked in either the 3 or 5th inning, what would the score have been going into the bottom of the 8th?

Does anyone else have that little voice in their head questioning J-Roll’s conditioning “regiment” back in 07? Unfortunately, his performance is reminding me of a player who was taking “supplements” and stopped. Brady Anderson, anyone? I am truly at a loss for any explanation for his pathetic performance.
Go easy on Madson…Howard should have stopped the pickoff throw and then the next guy hits a check swing bleeder down the line. Nothing you can do about that.

Trout Boy – Roids do NOT make you a better player, they help people work out and get bigger faster. Hence, Jimmy does NOT fit that mold. He got no bigger or smaller, he lost it altogether. Had he been at 30 home runs, then lost his power and kept his average it would have been suspicious, but he cannot hit a tee right now. Compounded by his bad breaks when he does hit the ball hard, it is all between his ears right now.
