Sixteen years later: Revenge!

Okay, so Interleague play means some really hackneyed matchups, but the Phillies and Blue Jays are both good teams with high-powered offenses. They begin a three-game series tonight at the Bank.

The Blue Jays walked into Philly last year and took two of three in a series where Jayson Werth clubbed three home runs in a game and Roy Halladay pitched relief in a rain-delayed game that went to Toronto. This year the Jays are 34-31, but were much more potent earlier in the season, when their powerful offense bashed teams en route to baseball’s best record. Their pitching is scuffling now that Halladay will miss his start (which was supposed to be this week), so this set provides the Phils a chance to get some necessary home victories.

Cole Hamels brings his sub-5.00 ERA back home after having a tough outing against the Mets. Wednesday he only pitched five innings, giving up 11 hits but earning a no-decision. This will be his first start ever against Toronto, and he’s had very little experience against their hitters. Toronto starter Ricky Romero has never faced any of the hitters lining up against him tonight.

Your gamenight beer: “An honest beer makes its own friends” is the old slogan for Molson Canadian. I don’t know about you, but there’s a bar near my home, and sometimes I go in just wanting an honest lager. Seriously. And sometimes I’m jonesing for a Molson. Absolutely. So grab a Molson, partner, and drink it with ham and baked potato, a decent northern dish.

Go Phillies!

  1. Griffin Says:

Phils really should take 2 of 3 against the Jays since they’re not facing Halladay.

  2. Alex Says:

Matt Stairs approves of your beer selection.

  3. shag beta sigma delta Says:

2 of 3 would be nice, especially with out Halladay. Isn’t it to his advantage that Cole has never pitched to these guys. Would love to see him in control and going at least 7 with 1ER on 5 hits. Anyone know the lineup tonight

  4. Matt Says:

Joe Citgo isn’t on this team is he?

  5. The Dipsy Says:

Ken Rosenthal mentioned Jon Garland’s name again today. Why don’t they just stop talking to him? I have more inside knowledge about baseball in my whole body that he does in his little pinky. Let them talk to ME for Chrissakes. I can stand in front of a camera and make shit up just as well as he can. Further, mikemike, NJ, and the other usual suspects…whats up with Joe Savery? Velocity between 87 and 91 is merely pedestrian. Does he have an out pitch we don’t know about. Please advise. Thanks.

  6. Griffin Says:

Savery was drafted 19th overall in the hopes that he would regain the velocity he had before his injury in college. That hasn’t happened, so now Savery’s ceiling is that of a 4th or 5th starter. He’s a “crafty” lefty. Don’t rule out a future in the pen. He is NOT a big-time prospect.

  7. The Dipsy Says:

Thank you sir. I remember when they drafted him. I wasn’t that impressed with him then and then he got “dead arm”. At one point I thought they were gonna try to put him in the outfield. Hey, if you’re a lefty and can throw 90, just grab yourself a change up and you have a 23 year major league career. What a country.

    The Dipsy

“Always striving to make the Phillies a better team”

  8. Steve-o Says:

Dipsy apparently he’s working on adding “bite” to his slider, and has a 2 seamer that he’s also working on. Most think he’ll be a bullpen guy, but because he’s lefthanded, it’s possible he could make the rotation as a back-end starter. His control isn’t yet there either, so he’ll really need to cut down on the walks per nine. I’d imagine he’ll possibly debut with the Phillies in 2010 as a call-up in the bullpen and then fight for a rotation spot in 2011. Could be hard for him though, as I hope to see Drabek in the rotation in 2011 as well.

  9. Bski Says:

Not only will we miss Halladay in this series, but there’s a decent chance that we could end up missing him when we play the Jays in Toronto next weekend (26th, 27th, 28th). Gotta take advantage.

  10. Travis Says:

    Blue Jays Lineup Tonight:

    8. C Barajas
    9. Romero P

Bench: Jose Bautista, Raul Chavez, Joe Inglett, John McDonald, Lyle Overbay

  11. Bski Says:

I don’t think Drabek will stay in the minors that long, Steve-o. I’m betting the Phils have big league plans for him next year, as long as he continues on his current path that is.

  12. Travis Says:

    Phillies Lineup Tonight:

    1. SS Rollins
    2. 2B Utley

LF Raul Ibanez: .322, 22 homers, 59 rbi

  14. Travis Says:

    Martis (5-1, 5.04) vs Sabathia (5-4, 3.68)

    Blue Jays at Phillies 7:05pm

  15. uguethurbina Says:

ugh.. I hate rod barajas…. he always seems to actual be a halfway decent player against us…and only us…

  16. John Fire Says:

Um… did anyone see those two pitches Hamels threw? Went about 40 feet. The first one was funny, the second started making me nervous about his grip…

  17. Jeff Says:

11 pitches. Nice job Cole. Keep it going the rest of the game. Lets get our 6 or 7 runs and shut down this American League team. Lets get the chant started boys…

    LETS GO PHILLIES…Come on

  18. Jeff Says:

    JROOOOOOOLLLLLLL OH BABY

  19. Jeff Says:

    OHHHHHHHHHHHH BABBBBY UTLEY

  20. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Ok guys, we got a game with the Blue Jays tonight. And that only means one thing. Bad news for the Blue Jays.

  21. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Sammy Sosa was on PED’s? No way, I never would have suspected that.

  22. Jeff Says:

Yes Buttermaker he really was. We are so lucky they caught him. We would of never have know. God I feel bad for Sosa. He must be so upset.

  23. Jeff Says:

Jimmy scoring. Do you know what that means….WE WIN

  24. Jeff Says:

Come on Raul and Howard. You are our big boys. You strand a duck at third, NOT GOOD.

  25. Morris Buttermaker Says:

First A-Rod, then Sosa, who next? Brady Anderson?

  26. Adam Says:

    The Howard special…excellent

  27. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I’ll be the first to admit it. I have no problem with Scott Rolen

  28. Morris Buttermaker Says:

What is the deal with the defense? The offense has come alive at home, and now the defense is falling apart.

  29. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I truly believe that Barajas is the only player to ever get booed while walking from the dugout to the bullpen.

  30. Adam Says:

I’m better with Rolen than even last year. Being WFC changes a lot of things

  31. Jeff Says:

Brady never did steroids. Are you crazy. He only hit 50 homers that one season. Next your going to say Brett Boone. LOL

  32. Jeff Says:

Where are all you fruitcakes tonight…COME ON BOYS

  33. Matt Says:

    Romero’s wife isn’t too shabby….

  34. pb Says:

How about Gil Meche? The Royals aren’t goning to win this year and probably not next year either. After this season he has 2yrs 24mil owed to him.

Think they would take 2 of Marson, Donald, Mayberry plus 2 pitchers Carassaco, and somebody not named Drabek, Knapp, Bostardo, Savery?

For Meche, and mediocre player (bench bat or reliever)

  35. Jeff Says:

So far so good Cole. Get that pitch count down. Lets get some runs and end this boys. We are the fightins.

  36. Tracey Says:

Ugh. Well, hard to complain about a pitcher giving up only one run in 4 innings…

  37. Tracey Says:

*SIGH* OK, time to wrap this inning up, guys…

  38. Jeff Says:

Come Cole live up to that big contract you Hollywood Pu_ _ _…

  39. Tracey Says:

Uh… you need four balls for a walk, bozo.

  40. lm Says:

    so many foul balls…not good

  41. Tracey Says:

Pitch count getting way too high. And we really need to wrap up this inning… still just one out.

  42. lm Says:

cole needs to get his stuff together..lets go! guess that home run really got to him

  43. j reed Says:

Too bad Hamels hasn’t developed that curve…he needs that third pitch

  44. Tracey Says:

OIC, this is the pitcher. I was wondering why he was bunting with a runner at 3rd.

  45. Tracey Says:

Whoosh! OK, now time to score some runs.

  46. Morris Buttermaker Says:

We need a nice Chooch double here.

  47. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Or a real pathetic strike out.

  48. CT Says:

    DAMMIT JIMMY!

  49. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Why is Jimmy playing goaltender instead of SS?

  50. lm Says:

there should be 2 outs right now but there’s none thanks to jimmy.. way to go jimmy

  51. j reed Says:

thank you Barjas… just a dp anyway

  52. j reed Says:

    .556 AVG with bases loaded

  53. j reed Says:

    genuflect

  54. Tracey Says:

YES!!! OK: it’s great that he’s getting out of these jams, but seriously, he needs to *STOP* getting *INTO* these jams!

  55. The Little Guy Says:

That dude in the stands yelling at Barajas is THE man haha.

  56. shag beta sigma delta Says:

ok finally slowed down at work, what is up with this sht Cole has to go one more inning with no hits to make my perdiction come true, any way we can discount that run, cause I said 1 run on 7 hits, guess we need to score some runs now

  57. Tracey Says:

YES!!! YES!!!! That’ll do it!! GO PHILS!!!

  58. Manny Says:

WERTH!!!!! I told you guys this is gonna be his month!!

  59. Mazinman Says:

What a turn around! Near disaster avoided at the top of the inning and we get the lead back in the bottom.

  60. Keith Says:

    WERTH!!

  61. shag beta sigma delta Says:

way to jayson, sorry I had to run upstairs, think his slump is offically over

  62. shag beta sigma delta Says:

i do have a man crush on your Raul, but three strike outs tonight, does he look bad at the plate or should we never give him a day off again

  63. shag beta sigma delta Says:

How many pitches did cole have he is batting 3rd next inning right, why not trot him out there see if he can come back for one more

  64. shag beta sigma delta Says:

ok I see 110 pitches, I guess he should sit, not a bad line for the guy 110 pitches 73 for strikes 37 balls, 6 innings 7 hits 2ER I will take that now it is time for the pen to shut this game down

  65. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Wow pretty quite tonight in the nation is it because it is the Jays or what

  66. shag beta sigma delta Says:

    anybody home tonight or what

  67. Tracey Says:

I’m catching up on some emails while watching the game; not much time for typing unless something exciting happens.

  68. nate Says:

nice bunt single. i’ve been calling for him to try that for weeks

  69. pb Says:

would’ve brought Madson in here with 3 RH hitters coming up, then went with Romero in the 9th if we didn’t score runs in the bottom of the inning

  70. Ed R. Says:

Why didn’t fat Charlie go with Condrey in the 8th? You know, to face the righties?

  71. The Little Guy Says:

    Fat Charlie?

  72. The Little Guy Says:

Ed R. are you 12 years old?

  73. Ed R. Says:

Yeah in case you didn’t notice he isn’t the most fit guy ever. Physically and mentally apparently.

  74. Terri Says:

Romero can’t find the dame strike zone!

  75. CT Says:

    dammit romero, this stinks

  76. Tracey Says:

Another bases loaded with one out? (shudder!)

  77. tk Says:

    romero…what happened?!?!

  78. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

problem has nothing to do with what side of the plate they are if you throw 14 balls and only 6 strikes

  79. Ed R. Says:

Do me a favor little guy, shut your mouth and don’t act like you know me or try and be funny, because in both cases you fail.

  80. tk Says:

cant believe they’re leaving romero in…ugh

  81. shag beta sigma delta Says:

come on JC three f in walks throw strikes

  82. The Little Guy Says:

Just because you disagree with his decision to bring in Romero, who is their 8th inning guy now, you call him names like some upset school boy?

  83. j reed Says:

    shag beta sigma delta:
although the bull pen’s beat up…Condrey complaining of back problems, Park has forearm tenderness, Eyre + Lidge on DL, plus the epic series with the Mets and Bsox. I’d of brought him out for the 7th and if hitters were working counts on him or fouling off alot of pitches, then I’d pull him. Could have been a quick 1-2-3.

  84. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    lets get a DP

  85. Mazinman Says:

Alex Rios is awesome! Thank you very much sir!

  86. Ed R. Says:

What ever you say bud, you have your opinions and I have mine. Leave it at that.

  87. Terri Says:

    YES!! Great catch Raul!

  88. Tracey Says:

This is really more excitement than I can take!!!

  89. tk Says:

    madson time soon!

  90. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    nice work Romero

  91. Ed R. Says:

And for the record, no one has said that JC is the 8th inning guy. Charlie said, repeatedly that Madson was the closer and the rest of the set up would come based on match ups. Putting a lefty in to face a a slew of righties makes no sense. Especially when Condrey is fresh.

  92. j reed Says:

    praise to thee, baseball gods

  93. Ed R. Says:

Thank you for the present Rios.

  94. Manny Says:

    Woah JC got lucky there!

  95. The Little Guy Says:

Did Charlie think Romero was going to walk the bases loaded? He is the 8th inning guy now with Madson as the closer.

So its Charlie’s fault that Romero couldn’t find the strike zone? Now that is just plain dumb. So you would rather have Condrey in the 8th over Romero? Thats just not smart baseball. Romero has proved he can pitch in high leverage situations, and has succeeded in it.

Calling Charlie fat is laughable, do you know over the last 3-4 months he has lost over 40 lbs!?

  96. pb Says:

    Alex Rios “Do’h!!!!”

After a play like that your telling me the Blue Jays shouldn’t be seller???? Come on Jays trade Doc Halladay!!!!

  97. shag beta sigma delta Says:

wow nice come back JC nothing like making it interesting was the fly ball real shallow how did they not score on that

  98. j reed Says:

    glad were gonna miss Hallady

  99. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Madson is the closer, so no he won’t come in in the 8th, JC is not a bad call if he throws strikes and plus he got out of it so it is cool, How bad is Condrey is he next to the DL

  100. The Little Guy Says:

Shag… Rios went half way on the line drive, why? I have no idea, you have to tag up as a runner on 3b, even if it splits the gap, Rios strolls home, and they take the lead.

Also the 3B coach started waving him home, bad baseball.

  101. shag beta sigma delta Says:

just like to say good timing on that JRoll article today, two for four not so bad, from 6 down not so good tonight but it is ok, those guys have been clutch all year lets get a few here to close the dooor

  102. shag beta sigma delta Says:

OK I am back to blue dot no out so good hit by Ryan now it is Raulllllllllllllllll time, I give those a little crap now they are going to come through

  103. j reed Says:

shag beta: don’t know the extent of his Condrey’s pain but it’s something you don’t want to push too much….

  104. Ed R. Says:

Did you know that Rosie O’Donnell has lost weight too, doesn’t make her anything than what she is. I call it like it is. You don’t like it, thats fine. Never asked your opinion.

For the second time, JC Romero is not the 8th inning guy. JC Romero is not the set up man, the 8th inning man or whatever you want to call him. This is according to Charlie, not me. Again, he and Condrey are both to be used in the 7th or 8th depending on match ups.

If you have ever seen my posts on here you would know that I absolutely hold players responsible for their performance but at the same time, it is the managers job to put them in a situation to succeed. Putting Romero in when he would have to face, at minimum, not including the pinch hitter, 7 straight right handed batters before facing a lefty makes no sense. Especially when in the last three years righties are hitting 120 points higher off Romero than lefties are. That is the definition of not smart baseball as you put it.

  105. Adam Says:

when did Howard start filling his mouth with Raul-like chaw?

  106. j reed Says:

pb – if Halladay’s going anywhere it’s on the Yankee express….

  107. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Ok Mad Dog it is closing time can we make it simple please my heart can not take much more of this baseloaded one out up by one tonight

  108. The Little Guy Says:

I understand the matchup thing, but Romero has been in tough situations since he go to the Phillies. But the argument is moot since he handed the Blue Jays bases loaded, they didn’t hit him hard at all. This is the first year Condrey has pitched good in big situations, i would go with the player you know you can count on.

  109. Ed R. Says:

I can’t say I entirely disagree with your logic Little Guy but I myself prefer the matchup route. You are correct that Romero is more proven and fortunately for him Rios handed him a hold with a bow on it.

  110. shag beta sigma delta Says:

hey ed to read anything but your own sht on here Condrey is not 100% think that might have something to do with it. now it is mad dog to do what he do

  111. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Maybe i should just go home and watch the ninth on dvr.

  112. Terri Says:

    Seriously, it it never easy!

  113. shag beta sigma delta Says:

it is funny MLB has madson with 5 pitches on his pitch count but only three pitches on the screen

  114. shag beta sigma delta Says:

dam in play no out, come on Mad Dog I am getting to old for this double play or strike out next would be nice

  115. Terri Says:

    Well, another bases loaded.

  116. Mazinman Says:

Gha… another game made to kill my heart….

  117. shag beta sigma delta Says:

    this is begining to suck

  118. Morris Buttermaker Says:

    Phew!

  119. shag beta sigma delta Says:

are they playing for 2 and giving up the run or playing in

  120. Mazinman Says:

    Once again, Rios is awesome!

  121. shag beta sigma delta Says:

    nice K mad dog

  122. j reed Says:

    overbay…crap where’d he come from

  123. Ed R. Says:

This ump might have the tightest zone I have seen in a long while.

  124. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Maybe I am glad I am not watching this sometimes less stress full with all the delays on MLB.com

  125. j reed Says:

    are you kidding me!!!

  126. j reed Says:

how many strike calls did this ump blow

  127. Terri Says:

    UGH UGH UGH!

  128. shag beta sigma delta Says:

dam 3-2 do not walk the run in Ryan

  129. Ed R. Says:

    God I miss last year.

  130. Morris Buttermaker Says:

When you walk in the tying run in the bottom of the 9th, all of the tickets should be refunded.

  131. shag beta sigma delta Says:

dont know if i like the curve 2-2 there

  132. tk Says:

phillies do not need another extra innings game! cmon!!!!

that intentional walk turned out to be not so good…

  133. Mazinman Says:

    Game tied… ugh….

  134. shag beta sigma delta Says:

that is a joke i would rather see him hit something than walk the guy with bases loaded, lets go Ryan focus

  135. shag beta sigma delta Says:

in play outs no runs so it is a double play right

  136. Kimmy Says:

    wtf is going on!!!!! AAAAAHHHH!!!!

  137. Manny Says:

This umpire’s strike zone is just weird

  138. shag beta sigma delta Says:

dam hoping for the DP ther ok Ryan on more out and the Ofense will save this one I believe

  139. Terri Says:

This is really bad four our bullpen. All these extra inning games.

  140. tk Says:

basically whats happening is madson is throwing strikes and pitching well…the ump is just not calling them

  141. shag beta sigma delta Says:

not extra innings yet Terri, the offense will pull us through you gotta to believe lets get one more out here

  142. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Anybody know anything about the Jays bullpen?

  143. Ed R. Says:

I agree with TK. The ump has really not called anything on the corners. Not granted he has been like that pretty much all night but still, the corner’s is still part of the strike zone.

Let’s hope(and pray) that our offense scores a run in the bottom of the 9th.

  144. Tracey Says:

If we go into extra innings again, I may have to do a little primal screaming.

  145. Kimmy Says:

this is painful, i’m watching on gamecast! thanks for the info TK, atleast i can know madson is getting screwed, not letting us down. LET’S GO O!

  146. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I’m starting to get sick of extra innings.

  147. shag beta sigma delta Says:

OK at least he did not give them the lead, and after all three bases loaded situation in the last three innings with 1 or no outs and only giving up one run, is a nice consilation. I am going home to watch the bottom of the ninth talk to you all tomorrow.
    GO Phils
Ruiz STairs? JRoll will get the run in I know it

  148. Mike C. Says:

Good Job FATSO CHARLIE FOR PLAYING THE LINE. YOU DONT IN THAT SPOT. DOUBLE PLAY YOU STUPID PEACE OF NOBODY. GO TO THE MINORS. COME BACK LIDGE WE NEED YOU. MADSON SUCKS.

  149. j reed Says:

    ed r. -
yeah…and considering the strike zone height was supposed return to
what was originally, arm pits to the tops of the knees…

  150. Kimmy Says:

why is extra innings a topic yet? we still have the bottom of the 9th to get a run….

  151. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

man our bullpen went from the best to suspect at best

  152. j reed Says:

Morris Buttermaker – so is the bull pen

  153. tk Says:

    madson doesnt suck!!!

  154. Ed R. Says:

I am really tired of our bench minus Stairs. Not ready to give up on Dobbs yet but Coste, Bako and Bruntlett are all not even good enough to start in Reading let alone the bench of the Phillies.

  155. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Kimmy the reason we are talking extras is that the best right handed option of the bench is Chris Coste

  156. Tracey Says:

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    HHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  157. Mike C. Says:

Hurry and get Howard up so he can k again.

  158. Morris Buttermaker Says:

When was the last time the Phillies had a walk-off win? Was it the Sunday game against the Padres?

  159. Kimmy Says:

    here we go again….

  160. The Little Guy Says:

    I think so morris..

  161. Morris Buttermaker Says:

This whole playing like crap at home thing– it really needs to end. I am sick of it.

  162. j reed Says:

don’t sweat it…the Jays don’t know about our right handed .236 secret weapon on the bench….PAUL fricking BACKO! How pissed are you guys when you see Jaramillo in the MLB highlights…2 older catchers from the minors…Bull Durham Effect

  163. Morris Buttermaker Says:

And I have been to maybe 8 or 9 home games this year, and the crowd has seem pretty subdued each time.

  164. Morris Buttermaker Says:

in regards to Jaramillo, it is hard to say how he would be playing here as opposed to playing in Pittsburgh. The Pirates are basically a AAA team, and there is no pressure on them.

  165. Ed R. Says:

I just dont understand why Bako is even here? He is another lefty and it’s not like he even gets a chance to catch. Who carries three catchers? There has to be someone out there better than Bako, heck I’d even take Jenkins over Bako.

  166. j reed Says:

Just pray Wells doesn’t pick tonight to get hot

  167. j reed Says:

ed r. – is he a lefty? if so then i’m really pissed

  168. Terri Says:

Just please do not load the bases again.

  169. A.J. Says:

I notice the Lidge haters are now silent

  170. Ed R. Says:

    Yes Bako is a lefty.

Why would Lidge haters say anything? Lidge is on the DL. No need to even discuss him. And no one hates Lidge. They are all just tired of his poor performance, which I guess we can attribute to injury.

  171. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I think it is a stupid reason, but the reason we have Bako is so that the Phillies can feel free to use Coste as a pinch hitter. It would make sense if either Bako or Coste could hit.

  172. Griffin Says:

    F-ing Scott Rolen.

  173. j reed Says:

morris b. – pirates are only 4.5 games behind the brewers…

  174. A.J. Says:

Ed R. I saw a lot of people saying we should trade him a week ago. No support for him I have noted this week at all. A guy named Goeff always talks about how bad Lidge is and we need to trade him and J-Roll. I assume he is a writer because he has a lot of info on players.

  175. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Maybe this game will make the Phillies realize that runs scored in innings 1-5 count the same as runs scored in 6-9. Maybe they will come out of the gate with a little more fire.

  176. Griffin Says:

The Phillies got infield singled to death tonight

  177. Ed R. Says:

I don’t know what Geoff does but he is very critical of the Phillies and their players on a fairly constant basis.

  178. j reed Says:

morris b. – yeah, about Backo, that sounds reasonable albeit, as you said, stupid

  179. A.J. Says:

He must be a Mutts fan then

  180. Terri Says:

All these bases loaded?! This has to be some sort of record. Why can’t we find the strike zone. Most importantly, why can’t we win at home.

  181. tk Says:

i really thought we were going to win this one..not so much now

  182. Ed R. Says:

The Jays will break through with the bases loaded at some point…they have to.

  183. A.J. Says:

We have a nice road trip next week after playing the Os

  184. CT Says:

    this game sucks

  185. j reed Says:

Man, I hope they’re not letting Condrey take one for the team …poor dude just looks looks like there is no gas in tank

  186. A.J. Says:

Just trow a strike at the knees and end this inning. Walker had a real issue last year. He was great on the road, and awful at home. He’ll fit in just fine.

  187. Terri Says:

This is a bad lost for the Phils. They should have won this one.

  188. SDO Says:

    unbelievable

  189. SDO Says:

why do we play like scrubs at home?

  190. j reed Says:

ed r. – agreed, so says the Law of Averages

  191. mg52 Says:

I don’t know why these pitchers keep running deep counts against the hitters. They need to be more efficient. Come to think of it, we might know: the bullpen has been overused. The entire staff has to be more attuned to the benefits of good command. That way, the starters can go deeper into games and the relievers need not be exhausted.
The offense has been weak again tonight and often a bit unlucky. The home plate umpire has also been very questionable at times. We’ll see how the end of this plays out and keep rooting on the guys.

  192. Mike C. Says:

Phillies pitching sucks tonight. There starters cant go 7 and it puts pressure every night. The only good team we beat are the yankees. Take away the Nationals and we suck.

  193. Sam D Says:

not over yet, but need to get out of this bases loaded jam

  194. Dan Says:

This is the most unlucky game for the phillies I have ever seen, and the most inconsistent strike zone i’ve ever seen

  195. tk Says:

i cant stand to watch the phillies lose like this…it should have been their win though

  196. Sam D Says:

    ok now its over

  197. Terri Says:

If they were going to lose the game, I wish they didn’t do it in extra innings.

  198. Terri Says:

    This is just getting bad.

  199. j reed Says:

SDO: only thing I can think is “hitter-park-itsis”…we get a little lax in the manufacturing runs department cause we believe the long ball will save us

  200. Sam D Says:

    what the ffffffff

  201. tk Says:

im blaming this on the ump! didnt call any of madson’s strikes

  202. Greg B Says:

way to go Phils. I would have rather seen Madson just take the L in the 9th. Someone needs to get these bats going at home.

  203. JeffS Says:

At least they realized not to exhaust the bullpen. Crap!

  204. Tracey Says:

    I’ll second that, Sam

  205. Mike D Says:

In part, I’m blaming this one on TMac. As soon as he said “you can’t say enough about the job Clay Condrey has done,” I knew we were cooked. But I can’t blame him alone. Sitting in the booth with him is Wheels, who undoubtedly encourages T-Mac to be a brown-noser. TMac wasn’t this bad on the radio. Harry just called the game without any of this f***ing commentary. But Wheels couldn’t have that, so thank you very much Wheels, this is YOUR fault too. Give the Jeltz to the both of them and Clay Condrey.

I missed seeing Cole pitch and only heard innings four through six on the radio until I got home. Was his stuff not there?

  206. Metsies Says:

    Haha

  207. Tracey Says:

@Mike: hehehe. Actually, my main complaint about the commentary since the loss of Harry is I find it hard to follow the game. It was always clear with Harry when there was an out; with these guys, I sometimes lose track of it, and the next thing I know, three guys are out and there’s a new inning, and I’m thinking, “wha ha pah?”

  208. A.J. Says:

We can do 6 runs, not over until the 30th out.

  209. Tracey Says:

    That’s the spirit, AJ!

  210. A.J. Says:

Wow, the TOp is productive now; weird

  211. j reed Says:

in defense of the offensive though not an excuse: first time we saw this left hander and the advantage usually goes to the pitcher in those stituations….now i am really glad to not see Halladay

  212. A.J. Says:

Let’s hope Carlson is not fully warmed up

  213. A.J. Says:

    There we go

  214. A.J. Says:

Howard hits a HR and we are within 3

  215. A.J. Says:

Crap forgot about Werth, Ok, he gets on, Howard hits one and we are within 2

  216. A.J. Says:

    Or not…

  217. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I went and finished some work and saw that Condrey blew up, man our bullpen has sucked. Should have won this is regular game time

  218. Mike D Says:

@Tracey: it’s like the two of them forget that their job is to CALL THE GAME. They banter like two fans in the ballpark. Which would be fine if their jobs weren’t to let us know what the f*** is going on. Harry knew baseball. What he didn’t know, he let his color guy fill us in. TMac admits his ignorance to Wheels, which always takes up an out, then they banter about Sarge, which takes up another out. It’s like they think the fans are more interested in what they have to say than the game. My God it’s like watching FSN in Pittsburgh but worse, because unlike in Pittsburgh, the fans do care to watch the game.

  219. Mike C. Says:

this team is a joke with there pitching. the blue jays suck.

  220. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

So ex Phillies killed us tonight Rolen and Barajas, figures

  221. Greg V. Says:

This game is horrible! Plain and simple!

  222. tk Says:

bullpen sucks because they are overused and exhausted and this game certainly will not help…

  223. Greg V. Says:

Why don’t the B-Jays sign Jenkins while they’re at it!

  224. A.J. Says:

    I like Frenske and LA

  225. j reed Says:

mike D.- Hamels stuff was okay but it is becoming more and more evident that he needs that third pitch..He’ still working on his curve but threw a 3-2 beauty that got him out of an inning. Shows confidence in it which is a good sign. Didn’t go pass the 6th, had 113 pitches though I think he should of pressed and gone deeper to give the bull pen a rest. The bull pen is on fumes and even more so after tonight. I think he left them out to dry

  226. Tracey Says:

It was going OK until they pissed it away in the top of the 10th. And it’s over. That’s grizzly.

  227. Metsies Says:

Hahahahahahahaha; we will now take the division. We will sweep and you will be swept. Shwoosh Shwoosh

  228. Mike D Says:

How the hell have teams been fouling off Cole’s stuff? Is he missing? Were those three straight ground balls to Rollins in the 6th really that close? LA said they were. I was driving at the time.

  229. Tracey Says:

Remind me again: How many runs did the Mets give up on Sunday night?

  230. A.J. Says:

Oh well, at leat we have the Os this weekend and a road trip. Kind of stinks when they cannot win at home.

  231. A.J. Says:

Tracey – and how did the game end Friday?

  232. Tracey Says:

Were they shut out 11-0 or 13-0? Oh yea, that’s right, it was 15-0.

  233. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

good night sick of looking at this team have issues and the front office do nothing.

GET SOME HELP FOR THE BENCH!!!

GET a STARTER OR BRING ONE UP THAT YOU THINK WILL WORK!

  234. Greg V. Says:

Wow, this is definately a candidate for worst game of the year.

  235. Tracey Says:

Oh, didn’t they win on Friday, AJ? Surely they were ahead in the 9th. Did they choke?

  236. A.J. Says:

    Pop fly – easy – oh wait, nope… K-Rod celebrate – nope…

First time I ever was happy for A-Roid.

  237. Greg V. Says:

Amaro better be ready to burn the midnight lamp tonight. He’s got LOTS of calls to make!

  238. A.J. Says:

    LOL @ Tracey

    They are artists, remember?

  239. Tracey Says:

Well, I’m sure Metsies is gone by now. Mets fans are really good at hitting and running away when they’re winning. Funny how none of them were in here to harass us on Sunday.

  240. A.J. Says:

I am thinking it is not a starter we need, but some pen relief. They are seriously exhausted

  241. j reed Says:

mike d.- he’s a high ball pitcher and with only 2 pitches, they know the change-up is coming so they hold off…so when the fastball comes they might swing a little later than normal thinking its a change-up

  242. A.J. Says:

No, they were sulking on MLB dot com. You should read it. The Yakees, Phillies and Braves fans (for some reason) piled on. Nice to see Phillies and Braves fans putting the rivalry aside for a time. I am beginning to like Braves fans now LOL

  243. Lets go Mets. Says:

Now you guys know how painful it is not to have a bullpen….

  244. Tracey Says:

And Metsies probably doesn’t want to explain how they gave up 4 runs to the worst team in the AL, a team whose motto is, “Thank God for the Washington Nationals.”

  245. A.J. Says:

I feel horrible for the Nats, seriously. Now the last Mets’ fan cannot be one for real. That was too funny.

  246. Mike D Says:

But if Lidge is healthy, Madson doesn’t need to close. If Romero hadn’t been suspended fifty games, he and Madson can combine for the setup. Eyre and Condrey don’t need to be blown out if Romero isn’t suspended. Anyone wanna bet Eyre blew out his calf from overuse? And if Hamels doesn’t have those s***-luck starts in late April against the Nats, again, bullpen overuse isn’t an issue. Many of our pen woes are man-made…but in some cases, we’ve just had God-awful luck this year. Sometimes I wonder if Adam Eaton was our good luck charm.

And has Charlie always played no doubles in the 9th inning? Or have I just noticed it more because I just catch more games now that I don’t work every night?

  247. A.J. Says:

I am not going to rag on the Os, we have to play them. With our luck they’ll blow us up and we are recorded knocking them LOL

  248. j reed Says:

AJ – Were in deep s***t. Expect more shelling

  249. A.J. Says:

Mike D – that was as funny as the Mets fan’s pen pain.

maybe they should hire Eaton as the mascot. HEY is he pitching against us this weekend? I have to check now

  250. Tracey Says:

I have a friend who is a Nats fan. She had a pool early in the season: bet on when the Nats will get into double-digits. They got into double-digits, but I don’t think they’ll be over 20 by the All-Star Break. You don’t tease those fans; it’s like kicking a puppy.

  251. A.J. Says:

j reed – I hope you are wrong. Just remember this – last June 13 we lost it for a month and the Mutts took first. We came back, but it too 2 months. We are WFCs and we can do it again. Why do I feel a repeat though

  252. Tracey Says:

Anyway… I’ll be at the game tomorrow night, so I won’t be here. Maybe see y’all Thursday.

  253. A.J. Says:

The fans are good people, Tracey. I remember when the Phillies stunk, and I do not mean tonight, I mean last place stunk. I posted a nice note to nats fans, if they fix their pitching, all of us better watch out, they CAN hit.

  254. Mike D Says:

Eaton was released by the Os, methinks. I’m sure Eaton would somehow make the Phillie Phanatic suck if he were hired as the fanatic.

  255. A.J. Says:

I did not mean make him the Phanatic, I meant make him Adam Eaton the mascot. Like the Phantic’s toy or choffer (sp?) or even bell-boy.

  256. A.J. Says:

Ohhhhh, Eaton WAS released. He is in the minors for the Rockies.

  257. Mike D Says:

Eaton would probably suck as the Phanatic’s chauffeur. Yet the Phanatic would win the Mascot World Series, because he knows, no matter what, he can’t suck as much as Eaton, so there’s less pressure there.

  258. Vic Says:

Tim, do you really drink beer every single night watching the Phillies game? And is it a different beer as indicated in the previews every single time?
