Gamenight: Red Sox (37-24) At Phillies (35-24)

Boston Red Sox (37-24) at Philadelphia Phillies (35-24)
Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-4, 7.33 ERA) vs. Antonio Bastardo (2-0, 2.45 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Cloudy, 71
TV: MyPhl 17
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The thrills continued last night in a heavyweight bout between possibly baseball’s best two teams. The Red Sox came away the victors thanks to a game of pinball off Kyle Kendrick. He was just demoted again.
Now the Phils counter with Antonio Bastardo, the cagey lefty with a plus fastball and supposedly plus-plus changeup. He might have to use that more often tonight with the big-hitting Sox lineup ready to take him down. Bastardo last kept the Dodgers at bay Sunday night, going five innings and giving up two runs on seven hits.
Boston has Daisuke Matsuzaka on the hill. He’s had many short outings thanks to his high-pitch tendencies and an injury earlier in the season. In fact, he hasn’t ever finished six. And he’s very hittable: Lefties are hitting .333 against him; righties are striking at .418.
Boston hitters are .266 against left-handed pitchers.
Your gamenight beer: Here’s a beer I just purchased: Three Philosophers, by Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown. Baseball’s first town has some pretty good beers, and this is no exception. It’ll be the first time I try this one tonight, so I’ll deliver some thoughts on Three Philosophers via Twitter. I’ll be eating some pasta with olives and peppers, maybe grilling some pork to keep the carbs low. Here’s to good beer.
Go Phillies!

i’m about to check the starting lineup and if jimmy is leading off i’m not even going to watch… alright i am gonna watch but i’m not happy about it
June 13th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Big test for Bastardo tonight. With Beckett going tomorrow, this is the Phils best chance at a win. Let’s go Bastardo!
June 13th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Rollins
Victorino
Utley
Howard
Ibanez
Werth
Feliz
Ruiz
Bastardo

WHY!!! This is starting to really get me angry, the whole jroll leading off. And I don’t want to hear the whole “he only leads off once” talk. The whole job of the leadoff guy is to see as many pitches as he can so the rest of the line-up knows what kind of stuff the guy is tossing, not just to get on base. Rollins just does not do that. He better explode tonight and prove me wrong.
June 13th, 2009 at 6:44 pm
“The whole job of the leadoff guy is to see as many pitches as he can so the rest of the line-up knows what kind of stuff the guy is tossing, not just to get on base. Rollins just does not do that. He better explode tonight and prove me wrong.”
Who should lead off then? Werth? He sees the most pitches per AB.
June 13th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
EDGE, go ask the ‘93 team what helped get to the WS the most. I’ve heard most of them talk about it, and they all say that Dykstra’s ability to take pitches and foul off so many pitches helped the rest of the line-up when they stepped up later. So Werth is out since he just watches two pitches and then misses. Now if Rollins was had a .400 OBP, then seeing pitches wouldn’t matter as much. But he’s not doing either of those things.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Adam, I’m not disputing that JRoll doesn’t see a lot pitches or is the prototypical leadoff guy. But, I don’t think there’s anyone in this roster that fits that mold. Vic probably takes less pitches than Rollins, his OBP is higher but not all that great. I wouldn’t mind Vic leading off because hes hitting better than Rollins right now.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Wow this is borderline laughable…
June 13th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
wow. not used to seeing this kinda stuff from the team
June 13th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
so are they trying to lose or what??
June 13th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Jeez this isn’t the way i was hoping for this to start.. jeez
June 13th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Why do the Phillies play so poorly at home? I just don’t get it.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
uhhhhh….ummmmm….what?
June 13th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
thats what happens when u only have one pitch
June 13th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
Keep throwing that fastball 95% of the time, Antonio, and it’ll be 10-0 Bosox before you know it.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
its supposed to rain the whole night…dont know if they will even get far into this game
June 13th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
Pray for a rainout before the 5th inning!
June 13th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Damn, I was worried the AL East would expose Bastardo. I think it’s obvious that we need to trade for another starter.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
i thought we sent kendrick down? and since when did he become a lefty?
June 13th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
what a disaster!
June 13th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
Wow it has been awhile since i last seen the Phils play this sloppy before.. oh man
June 13th, 2009 at 7:25 pm
its like we turned in to a bunch of castillos out in the field that inning. that was brutal
June 13th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
PLEASE RAIN OUT>>
June 13th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
glad I looked forward all day to the game…guess I’ll just watch something else.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Unable to tune in PHL-17 tonight over the air. (Yes, I am using a digital tuner). Is anyone else having difficulty?
It may be censorship for my own good, though, from the way MLB GameDay is describing the events of this game.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
uhh… what just happened? have the phils even had a 3 error GAME this year?
…3 error inning?? seriously??
June 13th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
I forgot how little I enjoyed the Interleague month last year.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Sorry this is “almost laughable” This is by far the most embarrassing game I have ever watched. Are you serious? 3 walks, 3 errors and 1 HR, in ONE count that agin 1 inning. The headline at the end of the game, “The game was over when…The Red Sox woke up”. 3 up 3 down against Daisuke? WOW.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
I hope it rains all night!
June 13th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
The Phillies are telling us to spend some time with friends and family tonight. Nothing to see here tonight.
Now we have to face Beckett tomorrow.
Thank goodness we play in the weaker league or this would happen more often.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
i didnt even think they would have started the game considering the weather but i hope it gets rained out..the phillies need a day off anyway
June 13th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
the bullpen is going to be dead after this weekend
June 13th, 2009 at 7:38 pm
There is a god! Rain Delay. Boston is only .500 on the Road too. Well thanks to us, because they were 1 game under .500 on the road until yesterday, and if they continuing playing today it will more than likely be 1 game over .500.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Has any of our pitchers given up 3 walks and 5 runs in the 1st inning this year?
June 13th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
mother nature loves the phillies.
Except for the WS
June 13th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Should they have even started the game if it was bad in the first place, and already a delay after the first inning? BS. Be prepared for the trolls coming in any second now.
June 13th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
it aint over yet!
June 13th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
I just got in…was listening to the carnage on the radio…was it raining like this when the game started?
June 13th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Thats what Im afraid of PGD. LOL.
June 13th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
missed the top of the first, can someone please summarise what the f*ck just happened…?
June 13th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Well I wonder who starts when the game resumes? Maybe move Happ up a day and then call someone up to start tomorrow? Unless Park wants to pitch two days in a row. I bet he would if they let him. Somehow Park coming in is sort of a good thing….WOW
June 13th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
to pass the time, if you have comcast in philly, you can watch the lehigh valley iron pigs play the charlotte knights on channel 272
June 13th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Phillies had three errors, Bastardo walked a couple guys…I think 3. Bastardo threw 95% fastballs, one of which Bay hit out for a 3-0 homer, there were a few more hits and then the Phillies went 1,2,3 in the bottom half.
June 13th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
embarrassing
June 13th, 2009 at 8:23 pm
ed r.- I was on the road listening to radio so i didn’t see Bastardo
pitch…of the 5% that were not fastballs what did he throw? How about his slider….was it breaking well?
June 13th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
The 5% that weren’t fastballs were generally taken for balls. There a little break, not enough that you could consider it an out pitch or anything.
June 13th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Just trying to pass the time during the rain delay. I want alll you guys to relax. I’ll come out and only throw 90% FB for the rest of the game.
Hey if any of you guys are going to be in the Lehigh Valley area tomorrow, look me up, I’ll be down there tomorrow morning.
June 13th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
anyone know if/when play might resume? i dont know why i want to subject myself to the pain that will be the last EIGHT innings, but oh well.
June 13th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
Come on Phillies!
June 13th, 2009 at 9:01 pm
the game will resume at 9:10 according to Scott Lauber and Todd Zolecki, via Twitter
June 13th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
chad durbin is the pitchers
June 13th, 2009 at 9:09 pm
the Phillies bullpen is going to be decimated by the all star break if this keeps up
June 13th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
Are you kidding me CT. Why re start the game id they only got in 1 inning? Neither starting pitcher can come back in I wouldnt think, and the tell a BP to pitch 8 innings is stupidity. Oh wait drunk man Selig is the commissioner.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
the game is resuming right now. durbin just got pedroia to ground out
June 13th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
Ok so If Durbis is on his stuff tonight, he can hold them scoreless, if he off at all, the Phils will give up 15. Durbin is like a box of chocolates. LOL
June 13th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
Kinda sucks that there was a delay, I felt better about facing Dice-K than any of the Sox relievers.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
is it still raining?
June 13th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
no it is not raining. Quick inning for Durbin.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
wow, great 1-2-3 inning by durbin there. i wonder how many innings will he stay out for.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Question is, will the offense wake up today? I can almost guarantee, they will hit the bottom of the 5th, and call it just to make it official.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
so they send bastardo down and bring in an arm for the pen tomorrow?
June 13th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
wow, Daisuke is still in the game
June 13th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
I spoke too soon. Looks like Dice-K is back out there.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Dice K is pitching.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
thanks ed r.
crap hoped the game would be cancelled
June 13th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Yea avoid any more embarrassment for the team.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
haha, Howard just tried to steal 2nd! Charlie had a good laugh off that.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
oh crap. 2 outs in a second im afraid. Hopefully im wrong.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
well heck at least he made contact.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
hope j-roll was taking notes during that feliz ab
June 13th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
I really just have no idea what is up with J-Roll and Werth. J-Roll was an MVP because he is a vacuum in the field, and was a good hitter, I believe around .300 I think, now, he is at .220, and only because of the time he was hitting lower in the lineup. Its not like werth was a .350 hitter or anything, but this slump is disturbing. I am also not sure if Daisuke has ever pitcher 2 shut out innings this season.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
I was hoping the rain would bail Bastardo out of that nasty 1st inning. I guess the bats will have to do that for him. But not like that.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Well At least it took him 6 pitches to get out this time rather than the normal 3-4 pitches.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
not sure if its good or bad that Dice-k is already over 50 pitches. LOL.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
@Brian: base stealing was another thing J Roll was known for. He was the fastest Phil until Victorino came along. NICE HIT!
June 13th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
I don’t think there’s anybody else on the team who could have gotten a double out of that well-fielded hit.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Come on Utley, show the world why you are a consistent All Star.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
Phillies don’t hit japanese pitchers. Honestly wasn’t looking for much production from the offense as long as Dice K is pitching, but Bastardo and th defense? Wow. Bad first inning
June 13th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Utley taking first pitch is nice actually. Drive upthe pitch count a bit.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
I get Charlie wanting to be loyal to his players but when the guy with the worst average of your starting 8 is the lead off hitter then something needs to be done. It’s about winning ball games not feelings. This crap has to end. Rollins needs to go back in the 6 hole.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
I missed the first inning — it was raining so hard here in the ‘burbs, it never occurred to me that they were playing!
June 13th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
Bad? 1 error 3 runs is a bad first inning. 5 runs 3 errors and 3 walks is a HORRIBLE first inning.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
@Ed: Yeah, we seemed to get more production with JRoll in the 6 spot and Victorino up front. I know JRoll doesn’t likie it, but you can’t argue with what works.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
WOOOO on the board!
June 13th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Good Job Utley!!
June 13th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Whee! As soon as I saw that thing come off the bat, I know Victorino was coming home.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
That would be why Utley is an All Star. Is this his 4th in a row? or 3rd?
June 13th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
The good thing about that rain: apparently, it’s past the trolls’ bed time.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Well at least we werent shut out. Howard already at 0-2.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
true dat Tracey!
June 13th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Stop it with Rollins, he is hitting the ball hard consistently, just not getting the hits. Ortiz is hitting .200 and is batting 4th for the Red Sox.
Does it really matter where he is batting after the first inning? He’s hitting the ball hard but right at people and not being able to get the 2/3 hit games to help his average.
Here’s a better question who you gonna put lead off instead of Rollins? Victorino? He is just at bad, swinging at bad pitches, first pitch pop-ups.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
argh… Howard got gyped…
June 13th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
Is anyone back in the stands, or is it empty?
June 13th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
damn, that was a good snag by Lowell, you have to admit
June 13th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
Son of a b*tch…great catch by Lowell. Can’t catch a break tonight.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
wow…if the shift was on..it was a hit..
June 13th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
@Little Guy: No offense to Rollins; I don’t know why it works, but we did seem to get better run production when he was in the 6th position.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Looks surprisingly full on TV. I would have been, as Harry would say, “Outta here.”
June 13th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
It seems like Rollins is pressing too much to get his average up in one swing…. he needs to just hit it into the hole.. that year he hit all those homeruns killed him
June 13th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Oof.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Tracey he went 3for4 ONE game in the 6th hole.
June 13th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Tracey has a point, defend him all you wants, facts are facts, he hits better this year when he isnt leading off. Even Victorino was more patient when he was leading off. Also kind of funny you saying how Victorino isnt good at lead off when his average is 60 points higher than Rollins, and he just hit a double. LOL.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
yea and 2-4 in another and 1 for 4 in a few others. When he is leading off, I dont think he has more than 2 hits in a game.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
The Little Guy, you are acting like everyone wants J-Roll top be benched. People are saying mix it up. No one is saying pull him, people are saying mix it up for a while.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Little Guy he also went 2-4 for the night before when he was also in the 6th hole. Then when he went back to lead off…0-5. Since going back to leadoff he is 1-17…yep, thats exactly what I want out of my lead off hitter. It would be one thing if he took a lot of pitches, let the other guys see what the pitcher has that night, jack up the pitch count but he doesn’t even do that.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
@Little Guy: Well, he only played two gamesin the 6 slot, right? And I’m not just thinking about his batting average; I’m thinking about the team’s overall run production, which seemed to be better when he was in that slot. The overall strategy changes when people are in different slots.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Hmn… sounds like a lot of the remaining fans are Red Sox fans. There was a lot of cheering on that walk.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Definitely looks like he’s doing the pee pee dance.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Tracey, he played a few more in the 6th, and also I think hit 5th a few games with Raul hitting 6th or something.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Brian, im not saying Rollins isn’t off this year or anything.
Early in the year is what brought him in the hole he is in now, lately he has been hitting the ball hard for the most part, just right at people.
How many times have you seen Victorino come up with men on base and swing and pop the ball up, he is a dinky little slap hitter. When he swings like your supposed too he drives the ball, he gets caught a lot by dropping his elbow and hands and getting under the ball, much like what Rollins has been doing for most of the year, except lately he has kind of fixed that problem.
Stop looking at all the numbers, and look at at-bats. I realize Rollins is struggling, but half the people wake up in the morning, look at his average and box score from the night before and see he is 0-3. and .220, but they don’t see how he is hitting the ball, he basically has absolutley no luck either, which isn’t helping him.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
(the pee pee dance, for those who don’t get the reference, is the dance you do when there is a long line for the toilet and you’ve *REALLY* got to go…)
June 13th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
People i think he is playing better in the 6th hole, but your reading into where they bat too much. It doesn’t bring in a different mentality no matter where thye hit, they still do all the same things.
To me it seems that you think Ruiz and Utley have completely different approaches at the plate. No, they go about their business the same way, honestly, you could make a case for Ruiz being in a tougher situtation because he doesn’t get much to hit AT ALL with the pitcher on deck, and who is behind Utley? Haha Howard.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
RAUUUUUULLLLLLL!!!!!!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
RRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
RAUL!!!!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Enough about Rollins playing like spit, lets get this joke Dice K out of the game, and score some runs.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
What scores run not getting luck and hitting right at people but really hard, or hitting the gap once a game. But honestly Little Guy, I suggest you do the same, and look at his averages from where he is in the line-up. He has hit other than lead off quite a few times, and his average is over .300 when he isnt. So what is the harm in switching up the line -up. Thank god for Raul.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
Agreed, especially since the game is getting interesting!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:11 pm
Nice Werth with a hit. Its about time buddy.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
PPPEEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDDDDDRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
YES YES YES!!!!!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
WOO HOO!!!! IT’S A 5-4 BALLGAME!!!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Sometimes it looks so easy…..
June 13th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Fe-LIZ!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
VOTE FOR PEDRO!!!!!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Wow only if we didnt give up 3 walks and 3 errors in the first. Dice-K is making this game bearable. LOL
June 13th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
This is exactly why I was praying Dice K would come back out after the rain delay. Amen
June 13th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
we usually win the games after a long rain delay
June 13th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
All we needed was Howard to walk last inning, and we would be tied. LOL. Hopefully we can get a few more.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Brian, im all for moving him back in the line up, basically cause it make him concentrate more on putting good at-bats together, instead of trying to hit a double to get in scoring position.
But i know, you know, Jesus knows, Manuel isn’t going to drop him for a long period of time, he loves him at Leadoff, and is going to stick with him. It’s going to either make him look like a genius if he starts hitting or a moron, we shall see, more than half the season to go…
June 13th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
I guess Durbin is out already huh? Maybe Coste can at least move the runner up.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
Wow, dice K got squeezed on that pitch, thats a strike.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
When Coste walks up to the plate anymore, i just chalk up an out.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Just curious…why would we use Coste to face Dice-K…we do have lefties on the bench…3 of them in fact.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
@The Little Guy, you are confusing me, first you say “your reading into where they bat too much. It doesn’t bring in a different mentality no matter where thye hit, they still do all the same things.” than just said “cause it make him concentrate more on putting good at-bats together, instead of trying to hit a double to get in scoring position. “
June 13th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
@ The Little Guy, I do the same, but I also do the same for Werth and J-Roll, and look at what Werth did!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
at least he did not hit into a DP!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
WTF Shane?!?
June 13th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Is he swinging for the fence again? What is this first pitch swing crap.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
F*** Coste and Rollins.
I’m happy we narrowed it to 1. But rollins and vic need to do more with their AB’s, mainly Rollins. And for God’s Sake Chris Coste can you look like a professional batter just once.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
I know Brian, that was awful, im confusing myself. Forget what i said in the beginning, because while i do believe that, for Rollins, your right, he does have a different mentality, when i said it doesn’t matter where people bat, i was thinking of Ibanez, Utley, and Werth.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Taschner scare me a little, but not as much as Kendrick.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
I honestly can’t remember a Philadelphia athlete cashing in on the merits of a few good months from two years ago like Coste has the last two years.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
See what i mean about Vic, the only people in the lineup who consistenly put together good at-bats are Utley, Ibanez and Ruiz.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:23 pm
LOL. You are definately correct about Ibanez and Utley, not sure about Werth. I even think Victorino has a different mentality.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Feliz as well. Hell he is hitting .314!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Why do you bring in Taschner who gets mauled by righties when 3 straight righties are due up? WTF is Charlie doing tonight?
June 13th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Sometimes Victorino reminds me of a slap hitter in womens softball.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
god i hate this reliever
June 13th, 2009 at 10:25 pm
Oh crap. Please dont make me eat my words Tashner. At least Kendrick has a 1-2-3 inning.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
so we could have kept durbin (who was looking pretty good) and used him to move a runner along…but instead bring in “K-man” Coste and then have to go with taschner? Some of chucks moves the last two nights have me going “huh”
June 13th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
Taschner defintley doesn’t get “mauled” by righties.
Righties are batting .232
While lefties are batting .304
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/splits?playerId=6314
June 13th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
F*** YOU JACK, F*** YOU
YOUVE DONE NOTHING PRODUCTIVE FOR THIS TEAM
WORTHLESS
June 13th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
Did Tom McCarthy just say “helluva play?”
June 13th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
I guess Charlie would rather play from 5 down…way to go fat Charlie…way to misuse your bullpen…again.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
durbin couldn’t have stayed in longer. he threw 56 pitches which is the most he’s thrown all year. you need to preserve his arm somewhat, and after going 3 innings strong he needed to come out.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
great taschner just proving why he never comes into the game
June 13th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Charlie has been doing wierd stuff all season. It makes me wonder who was really in charge last year, him or the Bench coach. LOL.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
goodness, can we please keep this a close game
June 13th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
Taschner should not be on this team.
The Dipsy
June 13th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
Seriously, Chris Coste to provide needed offense?
Jack Taschner to get out righties?
Jack Taschner and Kyle Kendrick do not deeserve to be in the major leagues.
Period.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
Yo matt, calm down dude.
He came in and his throwing strikes and they are putting some hits up against him. What more can he do?
It’s the 5th inning, as long as he doesn’t come in walking people, the other team does it too, oh yeah..their pretty good too that Red Sox team..
June 13th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Hmm, I cant believe I am wondering if we can bring Kendrick back to get rid of Tashner.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
case in point
June 13th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
yup, should have left durbin in the game. Taschner sucks
June 13th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
Matt, genuius i mean.
Lefites are batting .304, while righties only .232.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
I dunno, CT. The whole pen’s been taxed with all these extra inning games, and this is one of those nights you just gotta squeeze a little more out. Oh, and can we just start bringing up ALL the prospects who can get a ball 60 ft 6 in. and just see if any work.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
genius*
June 13th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
this is so damn frustrating after getting within 1 run, just release this guy already he has no value to the phillies or anyone else
June 13th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
Hmm, I was bashing Kendrick for giving up 3 runs in 2 innings against the top of the lineup, and Tashner comes in and gives up 2 in 1 innings from clean-up on, with only 1 out
June 13th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
I just don’t understand why you bring Taschner in a close game. Escalona has shown glimpses of steady pitching, why not use him. Chawlie brought him up. In a game like this, where a relief pitcher shows his true colors, Jack “Unproven” Taschner should not be brought into the game.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
wow a strikeout
June 13th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Wow, Talk about a slump. Ortiz.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Matt I think Taschner is proven. Just not the proven we were looking for. LOL
June 13th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Jack Tascher WOULDN’T be in this game if the starter didn’t get knocked out after the first inning and if the bullpen wasn’t already taxed with so many innings.
Your all right, he’s not the guy i want in this situation, but their in a tought situation with Bastardo getting knocked out, and thats all they got for now. Only the top of the 5th tho.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
OMG, Taschner has got to go! All that work for nothing!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
ahhhhhhh! take him out already
June 13th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
thanks alot taschner for completely wasting feliz and ibanez homers
June 13th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
“Jack Taschner was released by the Phillies this morning.” I want to see that in print tomorrow
June 13th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
The worst part is, we are stuck with this sad excuse for a pitcher at least until Eyre comes back. And even then, unless Escalona pitches lights out, we are still suck with him.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Jack Taschner must like getting mollywopped by professional batters, and killing every ounce oh Phillie momentum. Congratulations, you Jack continue to prove why you are not worth pitching.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
This inning will never end.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Great idea…let’s walk a guy to load the bases for Youk…he is only hitting 341 but go ahead, that whole pitching around Ellsbury thing will work out I am sure.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
He hasnt given up enough runs. Charlie doesnt want to take him out because it might ruin his confidence. As if giving up 3 runs in the first innintg he pitched, and walking the bases loaded with 2 outs wont ruin his confidence. What happened to Charlie?
June 13th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
I hate TMac, he’s such a tool.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Nothing happened to Charlie…Jimy Williams left, thats what happened to the team.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
yea tashner is not pitching the best , and I usually never say anything about the umpires, and I know the phillies put themselves in this position. But this home plate ump really sucks, he calls the same pitch a ball and then a strike, they are getting more inconsistant then NBA refs, something really has to be done about that. I am not saying it would make a big difference in this game but this guys sucks
June 13th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
THANK YOU SHANE!!! THANK THANK THANK YOU! and that my friends is the end of the Taschner experiment.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
I wonder why they decided to go with Trashner. I mean really? The game was 5-4, now it is 8-4. Good Catch Shane.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
I would say Jack Taschner was saved by being buried alive from Victorino, but unfortunately, good ole jack already dug his grave
June 13th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
we can’t blame charlie on this. blame all of the extra innings games we’ve had lately. you can’t keep taxing the bullpen by pulling guys and putting in more relief whenever a pitcher gets in trouble. after 3 long games in a row, you have to try and get as many pitches as you can get from someone like taschner since he’s thrown the least over the past couple of games.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Taschner MLB Pitcher
Kendrick MLB Pitcher
GM should know better than that.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Youkilis-i think he is the most hated player in the league for opposing fans.
I do not like him one.bit.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
That was my point from earlier Ed R. I just honestly forgot Jimmy Williams name. Appreciate putting the name in there!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
but the sox can’t have much left in the pen, here comes another 4 run inning
June 13th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
The good news is, when the pitching is horrible, the bats usually come alive.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
wow, taschner just proved that he is not even qualified for mop up duty anymore, complete and utter waste
June 13th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Youkilis has got to have the most annoying stance in baseball.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
At least Kendrick went 1-2-3 his first inning in. Wasnt that also against the top of the lineup?
June 13th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
Should read:
Taschner not a “” MLB Pitcher
Kendrick not a “” MLB Pitcher
GM should know better than that.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Pedroia is the whiniest little 2nd baseman in the league
June 13th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
So which is the more annoying stance, Youkilis or knoblochs(sp?) awkward straight back bat thing he had going on. That always looked like it just hurt his elbows
June 13th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Welcome back Chase Utley, we missed you yesterday. LOL.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Brian of CO
I always say it takes skill to hit a baseball but some luck for it to be a base hit. As long as someone is taking good swings at good pitches, makes contact and shows stituational awareness i.e plate discipline, the Law of Averages will eventually reward them…that’s why there’s 162 games…J-Roll’s fly ball that Ellsberry case in point, pretty text book but what he did in LA when Torre walked Stairs to get to him with men on 2nd and 3rd with two outs was anything but….I am not worried about him just impatient…as for Werth (that last AB was good) when he is slumping he looks lost as evident by the strike-outs on bad pitches. I think he loses the rotation on the ball which maybe from fatigue esp. IQ since he’s gone from platooning to everyday play…He has too much raw athletic ability, like his speed and agility which is god given, to give up on…however his baseball IQ is a little low…this is teachable. If lack of rest isn’t the culprit, then Milt Thompson needs to teach him how know pitches by their rotation because on some of those swings (ace pitching aside) he looks complete fooled. Now Ut, he’s the full package….
June 13th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Red Sox do have some nasty pitchers coming out of the Pen
June 13th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Good Job Howard!
June 13th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Annoying or not it seems to work for him sadly. I recall kruk had an odd stance as well.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
No prob Brian. I actually have been saying all season, actually since the day Jimy Williams left that Charlie was in serious trouble. Notice how often you would see Charlie talking to Jimy Williams last year. It seemed like before every pinch hitter, or pitching change Charlie was there with Jimy to his side…now…nothing. Charlie sits there by himself with his stop watch and pen and makes head scratching move after head scratching move.
As for Youk…why is he hated? I actually think he is an excellent ball player and a true gamer.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Wow 2 hits for howard. Come on Raul, pad those stats buddy.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
Thats exactly why he is hated by opposing teams and fans. Because he is a gamer.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
Oh darn. Cant say much about that from Raul seeing how he already hit one out, and his average is still above .320 honestly. Would have like to see a sac fly though.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
Say the phils do make an amazing comeback and take the lead. Anybody have any idea who would close because madsons pitched 3 days in a row now.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Werth, finally… pulling through this game.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Brian, i beg to differ on that about Youkilis. His own teammates don’t even like him.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
Nick, I say let stairs close. I’m sure that wiley vet has a few pitches up his sleeve
June 13th, 2009 at 10:53 pm
Wow, Werth with 2 hits today. First time in awhile. Nice work Werth! Homer ties it up.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Madson will close. This is a big game, Beckett is pitching tomorrow.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Youkilis is a gamer but his ass shaking is not the most flattering stance a baseball player can have.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Well that might be true, but Im not the one wondering why he is hated by the opposing teams. LOL. I just know that alot of teams dont like him because he can hit the ball.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
No, i don’t dislike anyplayer because their good, Youkilis is just annoying, stance, always complaining, stupid ass beard haha
June 13th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Raul…Utley…are both gamers and I am pretty sure they are not hated by the other players and fans.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Cant say much about Feliz either, already hit a homer today and hitting over .300. Again though, would have rather seen a fly ball to the outfield at least to try to move Howard to 3rd at the very least.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Ill take Youkilis 8 times over Howard
June 13th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Well def in the long run
June 13th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Utley is hated by the entire city of New York. LOL. Im pretty sure New York also hate Ibanez right about now also. LOL.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
Eli, why is that?
June 13th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
New York hates Ibanez ,but New Yorkers respect Utley. He is just too good of a player at second.
June 13th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
I don’t think so Brian. They hate Hamels and Rollins. I don’t think Utley or Ibanez very much..
June 13th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
How didHoward not score on that play?
June 13th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
ok chooch, keep it rolling. Anyone else get REALLY excited to see Howard just blow up a catcher?
June 13th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
Was that a hard hit and fast, or was Howard really doggin in?
June 13th, 2009 at 10:59 pm
oh man, i’d rather see Stairs here, but it’s probably too early to use him
June 13th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Let’s go Dobbs, lets prove how much of an ass that ump is
June 13th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Hard hit right at Baldelli.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Don;t forget in New York last year for the All Star game the “Boo, F$%^ YOU!” LOL. Not to mention, They are probably hated because Both Utley and Ibanex beat the mets in extra innings last week. LOL.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Why Dobbs? Why?
June 13th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Hopefully Dobbs takes the same shot as yesterday just 40 feet to the left. LOL.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Wonder who would win: Varitek or Howard if Howard kept coming and Varitek blocked the plate?
June 13th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
How did Sarge get his job?
June 13th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
Dobbs, just not the same as last year.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
Youkilis is so good on defense. He will have some gold-gloves. His average is so much higher. He is good for 30 home-runs. I also don’t think Ryan Howard is gonna last that long. He is a big dude and their careers are generally shorter. Youkilis could be a firstbasemen for the next 10 years.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
Way to go Greg Dobbs…rally killer.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
Howard is a man child
June 13th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
I don’t think there’s a single catcher who would win against RyHo on a play at the plate.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
But Ill take Howard for this 3 year deal.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
Basesloaded 2 outs, do you want to put a.) Dobbs in hitting .192, no power. or b.) Stairs in hitting over.300 with power. Tough call I guess. I think they need to go to Jimy Williams again. I know they begged once, but please, try one more time. Throw the damn back at him.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
Youk won a gold glove in 2007.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:06 pm
no stairs, WHY??
June 13th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
What’s the point of “saving” Stairs for later when there might not be a later!!? These managerial decisions have been frustrating at the least.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
Who cares about how good Youkilis his. He still has an annoying stance.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
and Howard won MVP in 2007.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
Thats charlie being a big fat pig that he is…I keep saying it. He is horrible. TRASHNER AND ROLLINS IN THE TOP SPOT. Dobbs could not hit my mommy with his fist. Come on Charlie lets put in lidge you big fat old man. Hairy ballls….
June 13th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
SDO: makes him that much more plunkable
June 13th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
yea saving him for later you are down 3 and the bases are loaded, have to use stairs in that situation
June 13th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
SDO has a point. Had Stairs gone in and hit a homer, we are up 9-8. if he hits a single, probably 8-7.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:09 pm
Touche Eli. Youk is actually older than Howard, hes 30, Ryan 29.
I’ll take the production minus the average. Howard is playing gold glove defense this season so far, the defensive issue is moot.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
what a play
June 13th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Mike C is obviously a 12 year old.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
Sometimes I wonder if Charlie wants to lose. LOL. Way to go Escalona!
June 13th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
At the very least the Phightin Phils made a game out if it, despite hairbrained first inning, and decisions since then.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
jeez rollins
June 13th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
So, I’m going to ask this question again. Who chose Sarge to be the color commentator? I can’t make out what he’s saying half the time.
http://www.the700level.com/2007/03/sarge_matthews_.html
June 13th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
Tmac loves talking about anything but the game.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:16 pm
“sounds like the creepy old guy from Family Guy” LOL..
June 13th, 2009 at 11:17 pm
Utley dude, you are NOT supposed to take advice from J-Roll and Victorino.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:20 pm
Little Guy: agreed with his defense so improved and the AVG better (though some bad habits are coming back) gotta stay with him. Though don’t you think that if his defense has improved so much he could, with some direction (Milt), learn how lay off that off speed junk
June 13th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
nice pitch!
June 13th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
Wheels- Mark Wolover really likes Kelly Dugan a lot.
Well no sh*t wheels, he drafted him
June 13th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Come on Escolona, calm down dude.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
If only we could have gotten out of the first inning with no runs. We would be up 5-4 right now.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
Well Have fun guys, Im getting off of work, hopefully this doesnt get much worse, and at least it was a game for an inning or two. 3 games I guess.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
Unfortunately for us, it was apparent Bastardo isn’t ready for prime time yet.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
Ed R.
You do realize that it’s the reverse of what you said about Coste. He’s had a few bad months in the majors including august and september of last year and April of this year. Check the stats. “A few good months two years ago?” He was good in all of 2006 and 2007 and was white hot for half of 2008. Again, that three month hiccup wasn’t good but he’s been playing pretty well lately. Why such a short memory?
June 13th, 2009 at 11:38 pm
Sadly it looks like we will get swept, and Mets will win tomorrow since Santana is pitching tomorrow. DAMN 2 game lead. UGH
June 13th, 2009 at 11:41 pm
Jayson!
June 13th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
Wow same dude caught that HR.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
guess he’s unslumped
June 13th, 2009 at 11:43 pm
WTF Werth! Holy Crap dude. Are you serious? 1-32 coming into today (exageration a little) and 3-4. HUH? Damn Bartardo. All you had to do was get out of 1 stinkin inning.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
Beckett isn’t unbeatable.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
Why couldnt he do that last night. We could have at least avoided the sweep.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:45 pm
damn near in the last few starts SDO, especially when we are playing at home.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Now im leaving. I swear. Thanks for making it a game at least. Later guys.
June 13th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
I hate the announcers on NESN.
June 14th, 2009 at 12:07 am
I must be the only one still watching, but I slept through the rain delay so I’d be good for another couple of innings now.
June 14th, 2009 at 12:23 am
eveyone says its early….but without a solid number 2 anywhere on the horizon, I am sweating. I have little confidence in Dubee to polish a prospect…I mean look at Bastardo whose has decent mound presence and a god-given 95 mph fastball and yet for what, the 3 weeks he’s been here, his secondary pitches haven’t improved one iota….what gives
June 14th, 2009 at 1:27 am
Tough loss today… stayed to the bitter end. I think at least 3/4th of the fans at the end were Red Sox fans.
Once Taschner gave up the 3 runs I think it was over. Tough to have to fight back from another 4-run deficit.
I think Cholly needs to put J-roll back to the 6th spot. This pop-up or strikeout business every at-bat is absolutely killing us at the leadoff spot.
June 14th, 2009 at 1:55 am
yes we have a guy with a .250 OBP in the leadoff, that sounds really productive to me
June 14th, 2009 at 2:30 am
J-Roll should bat 9th!
I was there from the first pitch until the last one and it sucked! And of course, when we catch up, who do we throw in? Jack Taschner! Next time, just say “is Greg V. in the house?” and I’ll come in and throw with my left arm (even though I’m a righty) and I’ll give you better results! Why is this guy even on the team, let alone in the game in a do or die situation? He should have been gone when Romero came back! But instead we put him in when the game is on the line, AND HE BLEW IT!
June 14th, 2009 at 4:15 am
Awaiting moderation? Um..okay..
June 14th, 2009 at 8:01 am
Jreed that is why Bastardo should be in the minors, where he can throw his secondary pitches, this is the wfc you can’t come up and try to develop these pitches at this level. A year in the minors and he could be really good, but now he is a one pitch pitcher, its a shame they could ruin this kid.
