Opinion: Keep Rollins At The 6-Hole
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Wed, June 10, 2009 01:50 PM
Nothing seems to energize Jimmy Rollins more than the necessity to prove himself.
We saw it throughout the 2007 season, as the shortstop took the reins of the team after declaring they were “The Team to Beat.” Then in 2008, after wronging Philadelphia fans through some crude comments on “The Best Damn Sports Show,” Rollins stepped up his game and led the Phillies to the World Series and subsequent championship. “Can’t be no punk” indeed.
Rollins has been a major weight offensively for the Phillies this season. Though he has remained a top defensive player, his bat stands out in a line of men who are hitting near or at .300 with solid production. Recently, though, Charlie Manuel switched his role, determined to light a fire under his vocal leader. Rollins has responded in his new six-hole role: 5-for-8, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R.
But now is not the time to take him from that spot.
The old adage is “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” And that’s certainly the case here. Rollins – for everything we know – is not a leadoff hitter. And now he’s showing it, taking his hacks and making solid contact, even launching one into the Citi Field seats. If Shane Victorino were to slump terribly, maybe I would think about bringing Rollins back to the top. But for now? Don’t fix it.

The only problem is him accepting it. Even though the rest of us don’t see him as a lead-off hitter, he sees himself as that.

i say keep him there for at least a few more games and if he continues to do well then maybe move him up again…but i like him batting 6th for now

He oughta stay at 6th for the rest of the season. It’s a good spot for a hitter with his skillset, and even better, he seems to be able to hit there.

If he could have increased his OBP he would be a nice leadoff hitter. He has great speed and is a high percentage base stealer which is nice at the top of the order. But his lack of quality OBP lead him to the six hole. The one former Phillie that I thought would be a great leadoff hitter was Abreu. To my knowledge he was never used in that role.

i bet he leads off tonight

I believe Abreau did leadoff a few times, and did a decent job, but didn’t like it…..

Agreed. Keep him there. If he keeps hitting like this, he’ll probably learn to the like the 6-hole.

Its a tough call whether to keep him at 6 or move him back to 1. We won a WS with him as our number 1 down the stretch not as number 6. It is extremely hard to get a leadoff guy who hits 20 something homers, doubles and triples while having a superior OBS. Very rare, and without looking anything up, I would almost guess that those who did now reside in Cooperstown. In my opinion, we should let him get his confidence back and get back to ‘07 and ‘08 Jimmy and then move him back to #1.
If Lidge were to come back a month from now (completely healthy and fully confident) are we to move him to Setup man? No, let them each get the championship minsdet back and put them back in their respective positions and get another title!

screw that story.. the more important thing is the Raul Ibanez > Pat Burrell.. and he’s a lock for the All-Star game this year!

I’ll drink to that!!

Yeah Tim have you heard anything further about the Raul story? They are talking about it on Outside the Lines currently on ESPN and Rosenthal and Gonzalez look a little pissed off at this dude who is on there trying to defend himself.
I’m actually a little annoyed that the Inquirer made such a big deal about it and brought it to Raul’s attention, because then he had no choice but to fight it head on. I just hope it is not a distraction for him.

And about Rollins, I really think Chollie will move him back up to the leadoff spot by the weekend if he has another couple good games. I disagree with that idea, but it’s what I think he will decide. If Rollins goes 0-9 in the next two games then maybe not.

Was this already discussed?
Raul: “I’ll come after people who defame or slander me. It’s pathetic and disgusting. There should be some accountability for people who put that out there. You can have my urine, my hair, my blood, my stool — anything you can test. I’ll give you back every dime I’ve ever made” if the test is positive, he added.
“I’ll put that up against the jobs of anyone who writes this stuff. “Make them accountable. There should be more credibility than some 42-year-old blogger typing in his mother’s basement. It demeans everything you’ve done with one stroke of the pen.”
That is hilarious. And on point.

Tim, I usually agree with your opinions, but I couldn’t disagree more here. The 6th spot was just a temporary switch for Jimmy. He is a leadoff man. He needs to hit leadoff. He’s what makes this team go. On top of that, I really don’t like Chase Utley in the 2 hole. I think that will really hurt his average in the long run. Plus Werth in the 3 hole is even worse. It’s gotta go back to Jimmy, Shane, Chase, Ryan, Raul, Werth, Pedro, Chooch.
June 10th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
plus, i don’t think the switch to the 6 hole really has anything to do with why Jimmy has improved. It’s more a function is improving his mechanics and not collapsing his back side and popping everything up.

That guy saying that is no different than me saying that Zach Greinke might be using PED’s … he’s having a great year..
It’s a joke the kinda stuff they try to make stories about anymore..
I understand its the instant-media era, and they need to fill columns, and radio/TV slots, etc.. but some of this stuff is ridiculous.. the drama and off-field stuff with sports is more important than the games themselves on ESPN and stuff. .
The Phillies highlights of our 7-2 victory vs. the Dodgers the other night consisted of the video with Howard hitting a meaningless HR .. and that was all..
and then it was right back to Brett Favre riding a bike on Sunday, so he must be working-out for the NFL… T.O. showed up at minicamp.. lets have 17 different reporters cover this story over and over and over..

yeah, kinda irresponsible for ESPN and The Inquirer to take info. from a blog and break a story.
Blogs can be fun and certainly Tim does a great job with this one. the reality however, is blogs don’t have little or no quality control and – to my knowledge – no credentials. that’s not a knock, but rather a perspective check. an Inquirer writer (despite this bamboozle) probably has what, 12 editors review their material? to publish in an academic journal article, you need educational credentials and have to submit your work, and be super-prepared for criticism and often rejection.
Go Phils! Drabek – won last night. Carrasco got shelled (again).
