Opinion: Taschner Used In Wrong Situations
Posted by Amanda Orr, Sat, June 20, 2009 01:27 PM
The three earned runs Jack Taschner allowed on Friday were just a small sampling of his season long struggles. The Phillies need as much bullpen help as they can get with the absence of Brad Lidge and Scott Eyre, however Taschner has not been the answer.
Taschner is 1-1 with a 5.26 ERA and 1.87 WHIP in 25.2 innings pitched. In games that he has pitched, the Phillies are only 6-13.
Taschner hasn’t served as a situational left-hander, especially since left handed batters are batting .296 against him.
Most of his troubles occur when he pitches more than one inning. There are 12 games that Taschner has pitched less one inning or less. In 8 of those 12 games, he has not allowed an earned run. The problem is that in most situations Taschner pitches, he is brought in with inherited runners on base, which he allows to score.
Taschner is not going to get the tough lefty out or eat up innings for a weary bullpen. If the Phillies are going to keep him in the bullpen, he should not be coming in with runners on base or in a key situation in the seventh inning or later.

Tasch is the kind of guy you march out there when your down or leading by ten runs.
June 20th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Exactly, The one thing i actually learned from “The Pen” was in the meeting during spring training Dubee says “Taschner is not a 2 inning guy, he may not even be a one inning guy.” And there have been countless times that Chuckles has put him in during key situations. Here is my trade scenario, i know he isn’t “on the block” but i think this could happen.
D-Backs Get:
Carrasco
Marson
Donald
Bastardo
Prospect X
Phils get:
Dan Haren
Chad Qualls
June 20th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
Translation: You don’t want the bat boy coming in with with runners on base or in a key situation in the seventh inning or later.
Why is he up here then? Bring up Zagurski or someone that CAN get lefites out at a better clip than .300.
Hell, I can pitch the mop-up innings when were down 5. If that is Taschner’s “specialty” then run him on out of here.
June 20th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
Amanda did her homework on Taschner. If you guys read more closely her statement ..”There are 12 games that Taschner has pitched less one inning or less. In 8 of those 12 games, he has not allowed an earned run” and paused for thought, it would clearly suggest to you he is effective if handled correctly.
June 20th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
As an aspiring world series team is it acceptable to have someone like that on the roster? I say no
June 20th, 2009 at 2:33 pm
Winning teams always have guys like this on their rosters. There’s nothing wrong with the guy, as has been said he’s beng mis-used.
Mike was that an honest trade suggestion or tongue in cheeck? Here’s mine
Giants get:
Carrasco, Kendrick, Berry, D’Arnaud, Prospect XY (plus Amaro dresses up as a pilgrim for Sabean’s thanksgiving dinner)
Phillies get:
Lincecum, Rowand, Poppeye and Daffy Duck…
Haren’s not going anywhere… Period
June 20th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Taschner is garbage, and last night’s loss stung. BUT at least the pen got some a day off. I mean, Taschner doesn’t really pitch in innings where they need him to hold down the fort, but at least he got 2 innings, even though he stinks.
June 20th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
I don’t get the anger towards guys like Taschner and Park or Condrey and Seanez before. Not every guy can go out and give you quality innings like Madson (mostly) does. Most guys in the pen are there to keep the offense in reach and their success is mostly down to how their used.
If everyone was a set-up guy who’d be there to throw the rest of the innings? Taschner serves a purpose
June 20th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I’m still puzzled why they even traded for Taschner. Majewski was throwing good enough in spring training to be kept with the big league club instead. I understand that they probably wanted another lefty in the pen, but if he’s not getting out lefty’s what’s the point.
June 20th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
NJ. Park and Condrey and Seanez are/were all better than Taschner. I’m not sore at him for being a AAA pitcher. I just don’t understand why he still has a roster spot. Amanda: Yes, Taschner is being used in the wrong situations. They’re called baseball games.
The Dispy
June 20th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
The explanation of the anger is simple, the guy is not doing his job. Trashner’s purpose last game was to keep the game close so the offence could try and tie things up or even get a lead. In that respect he failed spectacularly. You can blame Charlie for leaving him in the game more than one inning (heck, I blame him from brining him in the game period) but the player still failed… again. Even looking at Amanda’s stats when he only starts one inning that means that he is still giving up runs about 1/3 of the time.
If you are being brought into a game then you need to do your job. If you can’t then its time for a replacement.
June 20th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Haren? The D-Backs traded about 6 player/prospects for him 2 off-season ago, and then gave him an extension.
He is their ACE, why would they trade him?
Do some people think that just because a team isn’t going to make the playoffs they trade every player that actually is good and that attracts fans?
My point is, say the Phillies were 15 out of first, would Amaro all of a sudden take offers for Howard, Utley, Hamels, Madson, Vic, Werth???
Lol doesn’t make any sense to me.
June 20th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Little Guy – and according to mlbtraderumors.com it looks like Webb has had a setback and might not play at all this year….if its true then Haren’s definitely not going anywhere esp. if the D-Backs are bringin’ up prospects…they’ll need him to anchor the rotation. When it comes to purchasing or trading for pitching, I tend to lower my expectations as I think pitchers have some the highest failure rates among pro team sports and are to risky to sell the farm on…my plan is to kidnap Josh Johnson from the Fish..
June 20th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
reed, yeah your right. The good thing about that is, they might not pick his 2010 option up, so he could become a free agent, and if he is healthy? Why not take a run at him in the off season if your Amaro and the Phils FO??
Hamels, Webb, Blanton, Happ..Drabek??? Bastardo?? Not a bad rotation for the future..
June 20th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
if he’s a free agent then sure…not a lot of miles on his arm…What do you think about Ben Sheets, (i don’t worry too much about tommy john surgeries, they seem to have a high success rate) or do the Rangers have him locked up? Haven’t had much time to look him over, If you know, what’s the skinny on him?
June 20th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Ben “winter” Sheets? Haven’t heard much about him, but i would take a flyer on him, can he be any worse than Moyer, Blanton have been?
He throws a mid 90’s fastball with a nasty hook? Sounds like Myers of old, before he lost the velocity, sure see whats up with him, bring him in for a workout, than make your decision.
June 20th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
The little guy the Phillies aren’t the Diamondbacks. Diamonbacks owe major league baseball millions , they had to borrow to pay johnson and schilling, when they won, they can’t afford the kind of money the phillies can. We wouldn’t have a fire sale of the starters you mention, because we can afford them and more with our market. The diamondbacks can’t generate the revenue. If we came at them hard for haren with a lot of players they would listen, but also one other thing if we were fifteen games outs, who would care if werth went anyway. or a madson for a couple of good prospects but Hamels Howard and Utely are untouchable.
June 20th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Cool beans…so of what’s potenially available by the trade deadline who do you predict will be joining our rotation….you not only called the game but the score as well the other day, so impress me if you will notradamus…

Has anyone heard if the game is cancelled yet?
June 20th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
First place here we come! LEt’S GO METS. They will wipe out the rays too. Delgado and Beltran will crush the Phillies
June 20th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Johan is pitching a no-hitter too. let’s make baseball history
June 20th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
you two you should go walk into a fridge door… And then go on a Mets blog where your views are shared (and or a pig trough)
June 20th, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Phillies drinking game rules: Sip for every pop up, groud out, or fly out. Chug for strike outs and double plays. Probably be out of beer by the 7th inning stretch but it sounds fun.
June 20th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
