Orioles Sweep Phillies Ending Homestand
Posted by Amanda Orr, Sun, June 21, 2009 04:23 PM
The Baltimore Orioles beat the Phillies 2-1 to complete the three game sweep.
Cole Hamels was outstanding. In eight innings, he allowed two earned runs on nine hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out ten. However, he was tacked with the loss as the Phillies could not provide run support.
Greg Dobbs put the Phillies on the board in the second inning with a solo shot, but that was all the Phillies managed to get off of Jeremy Guthrie. In seven innings, Guthrie limited the Phillies to only three hits including Dobbs’ home run.
The Orioles scored their only two runs on a bloop single by Adam Jones and an eighth inning RBI double off the bat of Brian Roberts.
In the bottom of the eighth, Charlie Manuel was ejected after arguing a call. Jimmy Rollins avoided a tag, however was called out. It proved to hurt the Phillies because Shane Victorino followed with a double that Rollins would have scored on. However, the Phillies had other opportunities to score throughout the entire game.
The Phillies finished their homestand a pathetic 1-8, finding a different way to lose each game. After an off-day Monday, the Phillies will look to redeem themselves on the road, where they are a Major League best 23-9.

It’s sad to think I’m looking forward to Monday. I need a break.

this is what we all need to start doing
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Phillies are at Rays, Blue Jays and Braves before hosting Mets for 3 games.
Mets host Cardinals, Yankees and are at Brewers before going to Philly.
When we meet on July 3rd trust Mets will be in first place. We’ll sweep you guys in Philly on independance weekend.
GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FUTURE 2009 WAC – WORLD AMAZIN CHAMPS UNLIKE YOU WHO USE SWEAR WORDS WITH CHAMPIONS.
June 21st, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Whats worse? Swearing that your team is the World F’n Champs or being such a punk that your players saying that they will “kill” someone on the opposing team. If threats are classy than I am glad to be a fan of a classless team.
June 21st, 2009 at 4:45 pm
Mazin…we aren’t looking too good either. You are dismissing the Cards as a scrub team.Cards led by Pujols is a pretty good team.Phils as well as the Mets have serious injuries to key players and spark plugs in our respected line-ups.Don’t be too shocked if Atlanta takes advantage of the Mets and Phils maladies.
June 21st, 2009 at 4:47 pm
the entire nl east blows
whats it say about the mets that after the phils lose 6 in a row and 8 of 10…THE METS ARE STILL 2 GAMES BACK
June 21st, 2009 at 5:02 pm
I love how Mets fans come out of the woodwork when they’re within (2) games, but are silent when it’s 3 or above.
Ride that bandwagon, you fools. Your team is a joke as is that cesspool you call Queens.
June 21st, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Yeah, an argument between the Mets and the Phils right now is like arguing about who’s the tallest midget. But we’ll recover. And we’ll need the Muts to recover, as well, so we can enjoy another fantastic implosion. Winning’s not the same without one.
June 21st, 2009 at 5:03 pm
This is so funny to see Mets fans talk smack. They’re about to drop to 34-33 and 6-12 in June. Once the Phils get back to playing NL clubs again they will get right on track.
June 21st, 2009 at 5:06 pm
LOL, Scotty and Phils Phan were equally amused. All of Philadelphia is scratching its collected heads thinking how the hell are we so bad against these AL teams at home. We lose in every possible way. One more week of this left.
You know what, I’ll trade a lousy interleague regular season if we can go 4-1 in the World Series again.
June 21st, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Regardless of the Phillies latest woes.THE METS STILL SUCK
June 21st, 2009 at 5:09 pm
Not that I am going, but I’ll be interested to see how this weak homestand affects attitudes at the Phestival tomorrow. I can’t imagine players are going to be feeling too good about themselves, and I’m sure there will be some idiot who starts barking at the players during the event.
June 21st, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Fortunately for the Phillies, the Mets have been equally inept, both having identical 3-8 record (assuming Mets lose their game today) in last eleven games.
In search of good news, the Phillies will soon have Lidge return as the rightful closer; Howard recovering from flu-like symptoms and Ibanez will be eligible to come off the DL on July 3rd to play against Mets.
If one can call this as good news, the Phillies will be back on the road where they are a Major League best 23-9. Tampa Bay and Pat Burrell will be awaiting the Phillies on Tuesday.
June 21st, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Mets lose to Rays, 10-6. You’ll never be WFC, you LOSERS.
June 21st, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Met’s fans have no place to come here and talk trash. Both the Mets and Phillies are losing ground quickly to the Marlins. At this rate we’ll both be taking a back seat to the 1st place Marlins before too long.

June 21st, 2009 at 6:16 pm
I think the Phillies went through this same exact scenario at the same exact time last season. This is part of the normal ebb and flow of a six month season. They just had a horrific homestand and nobody in the division has taken advantage of it. Relax…
June 21st, 2009 at 6:24 pm
This just in. The Phillies suck. But so does the entire NL east
70 wins gets the division?
June 21st, 2009 at 6:32 pm
still in first?
June 21st, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Not sure the NL East is as weak as it is weird. The Nats, of all teams, just got through winning series against NY and Toronto.
June 21st, 2009 at 6:57 pm
The ump that called out JRoll made a horrible call and we would have had the game tied up in the 9th if it weren’t for him
June 21st, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Speaking for This Mets fan:
The Phillies= Suck-ass
The Mets= Suck-ass
Both these teams suck soooooo bad right now. They were going to go into September both with the division in grasp……It was going to be another entertaining September filled with excitement and disappointment for both teams…..One was going to be division winner and the other maybe a wild card. It WAS going to be a great late August, September, for Mets and Phiilie fans……Well…..THAT’S NOT GIONG TO HAPPEN NOW!!!! The Phillies and the Mets allowed both the Marlins and the Braves back into the division race. They were both buried in early June. Now it’s late June and because of CRAPPY baseball playing both these teams are in the thick of it. Both the Phillies and the Mets do not deserve to win this division. Gees, they suck sooooo bad! It is Official:
THE NL EAST IS THE WORST DIVISION IN BASEBALL
81 wins will actually win this division. Heck guess what, the Nationals are even back in the game. In the last 10 games they gained 3 games.
If you are a Phillies fan, I wouldn’t be so proud of still being in first place…..you won’t be there for long.
If your a Mets fan, I wouldn’t be thankful were still only 2 games out because your about to plummet like a stone.
Dare I say:
Here come the Marlins and the Braves.
SOMEBODY SHOOT ME!!!!!!
June 21st, 2009 at 7:04 pm
Geez, I’ll always be just as proud of being in first place as I am. It’s first place, dude.
June 21st, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Yea but,
Does any one realize that the Phillies should be at least 12 games up on the Mets right now?…
Or, the Mets should be at least 8 games above the Phillies right now?
No instead, I guess every Phillie and Mets fan is just counting their respective blessings. It could be worse…..THATS LOOSER THINKING.
The Braves and Marlins are licking their chops right now. In games to come your going to see the Braves and Marlins crush both the Phillies and Mets. Then you’ll realize these teams are in trouble.
June 21st, 2009 at 7:38 pm
I am not sure the Marlins or Braves can do it either. I won’t be bold say we’ll be in first; not sure we will be in second though either.
I am sick of the smack talking on here though for sure. Cardinals, Yankees and are at Brewers are good teams, so I don’t expect the Mets to do well. I also have NO CLUE what to expect out of the Rays, Blue Jays and Braves now.
Mets may win because we’re at home though. Sad, but true.
Stop with the smack talking, Mets didn’t exactly win.
June 21st, 2009 at 7:42 pm
Amazin Mets – right on. We will sweep the Cardinals, Yankees and are at Brewers. they stink worse than us. Yankees dropped two against the Nats, Cardinals dropped out of first and the Brewers are hanging on in the nasty Central. We MUST sweep and we will be WACs! F-Phiily and LET’S GO METS
June 21st, 2009 at 7:59 pm
They said the same thing about the NL East last year, and if I’m not mistaken the World Champions came out of that division. You can look at small segments of a season all you want, but the only thing that matters is the standings on the last day of the season. Only a week ago, this team was coming off a great roadtrip. Relax and enjoy the season…the Phillies will win this division again.
June 21st, 2009 at 8:27 pm
WAC = World A –Hole Champions. Mets will win this title, but not the division!
June 21st, 2009 at 8:55 pm
is that mets fan an ahole or is it me. are they playing that great of baseball. the difference is we have talent to snap out. they are a horrible team. AAA players except for a few and the one guy is hurt. I hope the xrays on beltran are bad and he is gone for a while. they will go down the tubes even worse without him. the mets stink. we have just lost 8 of 9 games and still in first. imagine if we won last nights and today. we would be up 4. Its like my best friend says and he is a die hard mets fan. METS STAND FOR MY ENTIRE TEAM SUCKS….
June 21st, 2009 at 8:56 pm
OH AND the mets will lose two out of three to the cards, yanks, and brews..COUNT ON IT….Your team has done zippo since 86 you punks…
June 21st, 2009 at 9:07 pm
Good job Jeff! You really stuck it to those Mets fans.
Let hault all of the trash talk until either team can win a series.
How can a Phillies fan (like myself) or a Mets fan, talk trash on ANY OTHER team right now? The Nationals have won their last 2 series damn.
Lets just hope this team can put together some good at bats and score 5-6-7 runs like we know they can, until then, come down on the trash talking.
June 21st, 2009 at 9:08 pm
calm* down, my fault.
June 21st, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Unless pitching help arrives — either through the minors or through trades — Phillies Fans will have a very frustrating year. The house of cards is starting to crumble. Power hitting fills the seats, pitching prowess wins games. Let’s hope we get help.
June 21st, 2009 at 9:56 pm
2 words
Dis graceful
as for the mets the are pathetic
Can the braves win? Phils are lucky to be in the NL least
June 21st, 2009 at 10:15 pm
How is it New Yuckers are so stoopid that the even talk trash when they are loosing?
June 21st, 2009 at 10:20 pm
Oh, it’s that they don’t go to real schools – P.S. Pick A Number.
June 21st, 2009 at 10:21 pm
i agree with you one hundred percent Jeff. Only trash talk if your team has something to back it up on… in the phillies case we have a world series championship to back it up on. what do the mets have???
June 21st, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Don, I actually think it’s just to try to get hit to their pathetic blogs about teams that nobody cares about.
June 21st, 2009 at 10:50 pm

June 21st, 2009 at 11:11 pm
Why did Werth get the Jeltz? Everyone looked pretty fail to me tonight.
-Phillies fan Dan
June 21st, 2009 at 11:20 pm
I must have missed the reason. Driving back from Reading, listening on the radio, I don’t know why Jason got the Jeltz, either.
June 21st, 2009 at 11:32 pm
now everyone on here knows i love to talk about how much the phillies mean nothing to me…however NOW its getting tp the point where neither one of our teams can talk…both of our teams are sucking to a point where when we play each other we might as well boo both teams equally..lol…however when the mets and phillies meet up it always seems like both teams start to hit and pitch and field so it will be interesting to see during the stretch where we dont see each other what happens..in the meantime…mets fans really cant come on here and talk crap and philly fans cant talk crap…yet they still can because 1. they are world champs and 2. they are two games ahead still…
June 21st, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Werth, 0 for 4 with 3 runners left on base on Sunday and 0 for 4 on Saturday with 4 runners left on base. Is not coming through in clutch situations but Utley and Feliz are right there with Werth helping to hold up the Jeltz. It is hard to understand what is Utley’s problem not coming through and driving in runs when he gets so much praise for being such a great player. Cannot be expected to get it done every time he comes up in clutch situations but during this home stand he was anemic as were many of them in the lineup.
June 21st, 2009 at 11:58 pm
Mike B…not for nothing, but Werth is leading the team with BA with RISP…so your little idea of Werth not being clutch is flawed…
I’m not trying to say the Phillies aren’t playing god awful baseball right now because they are, but they’re also getting incredibly unlucky. How many hits did the O’s and Jays have against the Phillies that were slow hit rollers that found holes or little broken bat bloop singles. Furthermore, how many times did they hit the ball hard right at someone. The umps all seemed to have a squeezed strike zone too, and that call against Rollins today was awful. The Phillies have gotten bad luck to go along with their terrible play.
June 22nd, 2009 at 12:01 am
Confession: I BOO-ed the Phils on Saturday night for the first time in decades. It seems to me that they have no team leader. No one to call someone out for the countless bad at bats. They have gone from World F’n Champs to World We Don’t Give An F Champs.
GO PHILLIES!!!!
June 22nd, 2009 at 1:34 am
While the Umps certainly didn’t help the cause this afternoon, the main culprit is not getting more than 1 run up to that point off of a very and I mean VERY -VEEEEEEEEEEEEERY- beatable pitcher in Guthrie. For god sake the guy had an over 8 ERA in road games. Not lighting this guy up is a level of pathetic that is way off the chart. 1 run, and 3 hits up to the point in the game where the call was blown. Absolutely disgraceful against such a bad, hittable pitcher. Maybe if the Phillies did like the chineese guy in major league 2 said they might have won. THEY HAVE NO MARBLES! THIS TEAM HAD NO MARBLES!
-Phillies fan Dan
June 22nd, 2009 at 2:30 am
True, Phil but regardless of all that other bad baseball karma and bad umpiring, you still have to knock them in when they are on base if you want to win. I am not refuting what you say about Werth but it still remains that regardless of prior games, these last two games are what I am referring to and he did not get the job done at the plate. What is Werth’s BA with RISP? His OBP is .343 which ranks him just a bit above Feliz and Howard. Has a good slugging percentage but I have watched him play most of the year and it would be hard to convince me that he is a clutch hitter. Has had some big hits but to me, is far from being consistent in coming through in the clutch. If he leads this team in BA with RISP then it must be relatively low in comparison with some of the top hitters in MLB and the rest of the Phillies hitters. must really have low BAs with RISP. Werth has a long way to go before he can be considered a clutch hitter. Has trouble hitting against the good right handers and strikes out quite a bit. Has trouble with that outside heater. Will be interesting to see how long Werth sticks around if the current problems continue with the Phillies and Mayberry continues to develop as a hitter and cuts down on his strikeouts.
June 22nd, 2009 at 4:16 am
Anyone seen Chase Utley lately? We lost Ibanez, Howard, Feliz and Ruiz have come back to earth and Rollins – why is this man leading off anything?? Chase Utley, remember the prediction – “the third MVP coming from Philadelphia..”
Where is Chase? We certainly could use a clutch bat right now.
By the way, the Orioles will go on now to lose their next 13 out of 15 to continue their plight. They outright stink!
June 22nd, 2009 at 7:36 am
[...] Sunday’s game by clicking here. Phillies Nation’s Amanda Orr offers a fine recap on another in a string of ugly Phillies offense underachieving losses: Cole Hamels was outstanding. In eight innings, he allowed two earned runs on nine hits. He did not [...]
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:19 am
Maybe we should all stay home tonight instead of attending the phestival!!
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:23 am
I take that back, we will be the World Champs. Lets go mets, I slept on it and I have decided we will sweep the struggling Cardinals and take all the games from the AL. Johan will pitch on 4 days rest at 160 pitches per game and K-Rod will be sharp. We can do it and I know we will be WACs 2009! Phillies mean nothing to me, which is why I even concern my time on YOUR site. Again, Let’s go mets.
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:23 am
didnt see the game. but i know the opposing pitcher was 4-7 with over a 5 ERA. so question, why couldn’t the phillies hit? were they just swinging at bad balls out of the zone or striking out alot??
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:25 am
Its amazing how bad our offense is with Raull out of the line up
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:33 am
“Why I even concern my time on YOUR site ..”
what does that even mean?
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:42 am
Hard to understand how a team that looked so good during a 3-week stretch, winning 16 of 20, could then lose 8 out of 9. Obviously injuries are part of the story.
I just hope the Phils have hit what turns out to be their rock-bottom, and it’s onward and upward from here.
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:50 am
I just read the article by Paul Hagen in the Daily News, “As Rollins slumps, so slump the Phillies”.. and two things stood out, both kinda pissed me off..
first, the notion that Rollins’ slumping is new news, or relates directly to these losses, is just wrong. While he did have a bad series vs. the Orioles (No hits, 3 walks, No runs scored).. just days before that he was hot vs. the Blue Jays, (5 hits in 3 games) .. and we managed to lose those games too.. so there is more to this team slumping than what Rollins does at the top ..
…
the second thing that got me mad was this about the booing, “Rollins went 0-for-4 and with each succeeding out, the boos seemed just a little louder. And while that backlash would seem to be behavior that defines the term “front-runners” …- ”
it bothers me that people were angry that he said what he said last year.. AND.. that people are booing the players that helped us win before.. and that are out there everyday trying ..
Boo Jack Taschner.. Boo Bastardo for giving up 2 out, 0-2 count RBI hits to the opposing pitcher.. Boo Ryan Madson for giving up game-winning HRs .. but don’t boo the regulars, the guys who day-in, day-out give us something to be proud of, and who brought winning baseball back to Philadelphia!
June 22nd, 2009 at 9:54 am
Its Philadelphia, they know theyre going to get bood if they play poorly no matter who they are. Thats what makes Phialdelphia unique as a sports town and why a lot of players LOVE to play here. Because they appreciate the passion and dedication of their fans. They know that we want to win here more than any other sports city and almost everyone of them will tell you they love being a part of it.
Maybe there are a few guys who are d-bags (Scott Rolen, maybe Rollins, Maybe Utley if you really pressed him) who complain but most of the guys like being in a city where it MATTERS what you do on the field.
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:09 am
Honestly.. I’m pretty sure most of them would rather play in St. Louis or something where as long as you don’t slap their mother’s .. the fans love you..
I boo Rolen just for kicks, but I don’t hold anything against him or Schilling.. the team didn’t have any commitment to win.. and they wanted to go somewhere that gave them a chance to win.
I’m reading Jayson Stark’s book WORTH THE WAIT right now.. and lots of quotes about how Rollins and Burrell took it upon themselves to try to give this city a winning team.. to try to put Philadelphia baseball back on the map.
Funny how a new stadium and record payrolls translate to winning baseball.. but can you really blame Rolen for not wanting to hit behind Doug Glanville and Desi Relaford ?? or Schilling for having a staff of Bruce Chen, Robert Person.. Jeff Brantley and Wayne Gomes for the late-innings pitchers.. etc..
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:09 am
If the Phillies would have gone 5-4, or even 4-5 on this past home stand, it would not have been as bad of a disaster as going 1-8 and the main reason they did not was because of a lack of run support for the starters. Except for maybe two or three of the games, the starters pitched well enough to win had the offense did their job like they have done, for the most part, in the past.
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:12 am
as bad as the phils are playing they are still up 2 in the division and they were not really out of any of the games that they lost…a call here a seeing eye hit there and they easily could be 4-2 in their last 6…
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:19 am
In my opinion, The Bullpen gets more blame than the offense..
we averaged over 4 runs per game in the 9 game homestand..
including:
a 6-11 Loss to Boston..
a 7-8 Loss to Toronto..
a 5-6 Loss to Baltimore..
(2-5 loss with Kyle Kendrick in the game for some reason.. and Dobbs’ “HR” not even reviewed in extra innings)..
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:21 am
the bullpen is overworked…this takes me back to my arguement that charlie can not manage a game…our starters need to suck it up and go back out another inning…a 100 pitch outing here and there is not going to hurt them…plus it puts us in a bind with our bench…
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:24 am
episode 2 of the pen is on now, anybody catch the guys eating Del Taco out of the back of some ladies pickup truck?
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:28 am
Many are saying that the AL Eastern Division is superior to the NL Eastern Division and that the AL is better than the NL. This is the second year in a row that we have seen the Phillies flounder against the American League. Last year it was a series against Boston and the remainder of the games against the AL Western Division. On the other hand, it makes me wonder sometimes if the Phillies as a team do not care for inter-league play and have trouble getting motivated for it. Will be interesting to see how the Phillies fare two or three years down the road and longer against AL teams; whether similar losing trends continue.
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:39 am
in order for the bullpen to improve, starting pitching must improve!! you can’t blame the bullpen for being overworked – that’s the situation they were put in as a result of the bad pitching.
but, cole hamels did exactly what he needed to do yesterday – went deep into the game, gave the bullpen a rest, and only gave up 2 runs. its sad to see that he had to get a loss because he certainly did not deserve it.
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:47 am
Here is what I am having a problem with. I am a huge Phillies fan. I love this team. Last year everything came together. When you look at our pitching from last season you are shocked we won it all. Moyer had a nice season but there were plenty of games were he got rocked. We should of shook his hand and let him go. He might be good from time to time but you cant rely on him. Happ and Bastardo are our future but you are not winning it all with them. The bullpen is been so over used this year. I dont know if they will make it to the end. Last year Lidge was perfect and we just barley won the division…I have many issues with Manuel. First Rollins who I never have loved on this team. Yes he is a great defense of player. I hope steroids were not involved because his power went away. He has a big mouth. I understand when he scores we win. Charlie moved him to the 6th hole and guess what he started hitting the ball. Then he moves him back. WHY? He is just slumpping in the number one hole. Howard is a very very streaky player. I would of never given him that big contract. Go year to year and then trade him at the end. He makes alot of big outs and swings at almost every bad slider. Drives us nuts. Utley is struggling but he is so good you cant yell. Werth is streaky as well. To up and down and that hurts this team. Ruiz and Feliz are finally coming back down to earth. They are not .300 hitters. Ibanez will also come back down. He is solid and will be for the rest of the season. Our bench is pathetic. Stairs is good but Bako, Bruntlett, Coste, and Dobbs. Please. We play yo you with our AAA guys. Leave Mayberry alone. I understand why Stairs was in there but Mayberry is a better ball player. Charlie out thinks himself. We need to make a couple trades. Fast. Not at the deadline. Soon. We all can thank the Mets for allowing us to stay in first. Just think we would be 6 up if not for this bad slump but they could say the same thing. You cant get swept by these bad teams. Finally I think we can all put Madson as a closer to rest. Lidge is the man and I hope he returns to form. We have a tough series coming up and Moyer leads off. We need to hold our breathe because you dont know which Moyer will show…
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:52 am
Back to baseball.
OK, we know we need another starter, but some small moves can help. Minor tweaks.
Lead off Victorino for a spell. Put Rollins two and make him bunt if Vic gets on. Maybe he’ll learn something about discipline at the plate. He doesn’t go back to leadoff until he does. Traschner is not a multiple innings pitcher so stop using him that way. Bruntlett as a bat off the bench. Are you kidding me.
June 22nd, 2009 at 12:05 pm
When the sun comes out on a consistent basis Rollins will knock the cover off the baseball regardless of where he bats in the order. It was tough watching the Phillies lose 3 in a row to the Orioles however, my nephew Nolan Reimold was just brought up by the Oriole he is doing well and we all know “Blood’s thicker than water”.
June 22nd, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Great post by jeff. At this point with the way the team is playing and with the team staying with the same personnel that it has, it is hard to see how this team can win it all this year. In a game against the Orioles, Manuel had Chan Ho pitching the eighth inning with the Phillies in the lead and Chan did a great job getting the Orioles out. In comes Madsen in the ninth and we all know what happened. Why not let Park in to pitch the ninth if he is getting people out? Manuel over manages and over thinks himself too much. Is it gospel that the closer has to always be brought in in the final inning? Charlie needs to think outside the box once in a while.
