Phillies Player Involved in Incident with Fan
Posted by Amanda Orr, Sat, June 27, 2009 02:00 PM
Following Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, an unidentified Phillies player was involved in an incident with a Rays fan.
“We are disappointed to learn about the alleged incident with a Rays fan and one of our players following Thursday night’s game at Tropicana Field,” the Phillies said Saturday in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering all of the details surrounding the situation. Until such information is provided, it would be inappropriate for us to comment at this time.”
The St. Petersburg Times reported that a police dispatcher confirmed a report for a battery call at 11 PM at Tropicana Field.
UPDATE (2:44 PM): David Murphy reports (via Twitter) that J.C Romero is the player that has now been identified. Rays fan claims Romero grabbed him by the throat and pushed him after the fan made a steroid comment.

i did see romero talking to someone in the stands behind him near the bullpens but it didnt seem like it was an altercation
June 27th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
I’m betting Romero
I was watching the third game on TV and the cameras caught someone yelling really distinctly (as in it could be heard really clearly) about Romero being a jackass.

Rays fans, like Nats fans, are often times way too immature for the stands. It’s one thing for a Phils fan and Mets fan to go at it, but the folks with no history of baseball or fan traditions need to chill out sometimes. I feel like they try way to hard to be aggressive based on what they see other fans doing. The vitriol needs to be organic.

ST. PETERSBURG – A New Port Richey man says he was assaulted by a Philadelphia Phillies player following Thursday’s game against the Rays.
Robert Eaton, a 25-year-old father of two, said Phillies pitcher J.C. Romero grabbed him by the neck and pushed him after he made a comment about steroids.
Officials for both teams confirmed they knew of an incident, but neither identified the player Saturday afternoon. A St. Petersburg Police dispatcher confirmed that a report for a battery call was taken at the stadium at about 11 p.m. Thursday.
“We’re disappointed to learn about the alleged incident with a Rays fan and one of our players following Thursday night’s game at Tropicana Field,” the Philadelphia Phillies said in a statement.

Way to go jc, you fired up the team. The guy should keep his mouth shut.
June 27th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
There’s nothing better to change your image of “steroid user” by engaging in a little roid rage.
June 27th, 2009 at 6:43 pm
How long’s the suspension going to be this time?
June 27th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
This Robert Eaton dude is a scumbag. No wonder, considering his last name.
June 27th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
And Philly fans are meant to be bad… Tampa fans don’t know how to taunt the other teams players, you don’t confront them, you throw batteries from the stands…
June 27th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
That’s what you get for being a good guy and stopping to sign autographs for fans. A freeloader named Eaton trying to get a free ride and steal money. I’ve heard this song before.
June 28th, 2009 at 12:25 am
Trying to be a good guy? Romero is a TOTAL A-HOLE, looooooong before this…
June 28th, 2009 at 12:33 am
Geoff can you list the members of the Phillies organisation you actually like?
June 28th, 2009 at 12:45 am
Almost all of them…
June 28th, 2009 at 3:05 am
NJ – Geoff said “Almost all of them” – but needs to add “…who played and are no longer with the team or have retired.”
June 28th, 2009 at 3:10 am
You just know Geoff loved every player years back, got a Scotty Rolen tattoo and the bitterness has stained the memory of almost every player since…
June 28th, 2009 at 9:51 am
Remember the good old days when if you got drunk and embarrassed yourself, you took a long shower and called up people to apologize. Now you get a lawyer and try to get on ESPN.
June 28th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Romero is a d-bag. I think this team would be better off with someone who isnt a d-bag in that slot.
July 6th, 2009 at 1:59 am
I went to high school with this guy. Total POS! And this is exactly the thing he would do. He’ll spend more effort on this than actually working. I don’t like Manny, but I like Robert (”Bert”) Eaton even less. O ya , and Bert did steroids a few years back. He didn’t work out while on em and got Fat. His two kids are baggage from his wife who is a retired stripper.
