Report: Phillies Talking Spillborghs

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Tue, June 09, 2009 12:28 PM

Ken Rosenthal reports the Phillies have inquired about Rockies outfielder Ryan Spillborghs.

Spillborghs, 29, is hitting .259 with 5 HR and 26 RBI this season for the Rockies in a starting role. Normally he’s been used as a platoon player. The right-hander would fit nicely on the Phillies bench, though his statistics closely resemble those of Jayson Werth.

What the hell do they want with that dude?

  2. Mike Says:

do you know how many times ken reports on what the phillies are going to do. yes they need a bat, i agree but pitcing is more important. we need a number 2 starter or we wont win this year.

  3. mikemike Says:

This kid has been rumored to the braves, red sox , marlins, and others, so he is just linking the phillies off the rumors,

  4. Travis Says:

How about this trade? Jason Marquis (8-4, 3.98) and Ryan Spilborghs (.259, 5HRS, 26RBI) for Carlos Carrasco, Lou Marson and Jason Donald/John Mayberry Jr./Kyle Kendrick?

Steve Phillips pointed no matter how well Antonio Bastardo pitches, when gets around 150+ IP, you will start seeing effects on Bastardo who will then struggle because he’s never pitched this many innings before. Marquis has been solid this year and leads the NL in wins. With Marquis you get a pitcher who can pitch 150+ Innings and be solid. Bastardo then can go into the rotation and eat some innings from the bullpen like Chan Ho Park is doing right now (3IP In LA). Spilborghs can be a solid bench player for us and the field dimensions are smaller than of Coors Field, so some more homers might be hit by Spilborghs.

  5. Travis Says:

Jason Marquis has won 11 or more games for five straight years through 2008 and he’s already got 8 this year, and started 29 or more games in each of those years. His 65 wins from the start of the 2004 season through the 2008 season ranked 7th among N.L. pitchers. Through 2008, in games that were late and close Marquis held batters to a .215 batting average. He has also excelled with the bat, earning the Silver Slugger Award in 2005.

    Career stats
    Win-Loss 88-74
    Earned run average 4.52
    Strikeouts 791

  6. Geoff Says:

I dont know what Jason Marquis is really that much better than what we have now. I think that if theyre going to end up with a guy like that in the rotation then just wait until the deadline when youve come close to maximizing starting innings from Bastardo and can then use Bastardo out of the pen in the playoffs a la Happ last year.

Im all for getting Spilborghs though. That would be a solid move to bolster the bench. The Rockies dont need a catcher (Chris Ianetta is good), so Kendrick & Mayberry or maybe even less than that could work…

  7. Geoff Says:

And they also need BENCH DEPTH. Thats what this guy will provide. I could care less what order we fill our needs in. Bastardo can hold the fort down until they can come up with a big name for the playoff rotation. Until then, why not add to the bench?

  8. Travis Says:

Through June 8, pitching for the last-place Rockies,Marquis is leading the NL in wins (8) and ground outs induced (133), tied for the lead in double plays induced (11), 3rd in ground ball/fly ball ratio (2.03; of all NL pitchers with 60 or more innings pitched), and 4th in innings pitched (81.1) and complete games (1). He had a career-low 14.47 pitches per inning, and is holding opposing batters to a career-low .318 OBP and .373 slugging percentage.

All of this while pitching in Coors Field, a homer-friendly park.

Marquis is also a good hitter hitting around .215 in his career with 26 doubles, 2 triples, 5 homers, 53 runs scored, 43RBI’s, and a slugging PCT% of like .290

  9. Travis Says:

To be honest wait until the trade deadline and then acquire Marquis- if the Phillies want him.

  10. ryan Says:

i’m always wary about any player from Colorado. They tend to leave that thin mile high air and never have any success elsewhere.

  11. Don M Says:

Why will that happen to Bastardo definitely? .. Hamels never pitched as many innings before, as he did once it got late into last season, and the postseason…

Steve Phillips doesn’t know jack sh!t about baseball.. which is why he now works for a TV station, not a baseball team anymore

  12. M.P. aka Philles Phan SC #54 Says:

    Stay away from Spillborghs

  13. psujoe Says:

The only thing about Spilborghs is that he’s batting .133 on the road against lefties, .435 at home. small sampe though. No doubt we need a right handed OF off the bench. I just wouldn’t give up chips we’ll need to get a top tier pitcher at the deadline.

  14. The Little Guy Says:

Yeah Don M, i completely agree, i don’t get how people can say someone is defintetly going to falter is awfully stupid.

He throws majority fastballs, and when he starts working on his off-speed stuff. If he keeps pitching like this and shutting down his opponents, i don’t want them to trade for some bum like Marquis, Duke, and of those 3rd or 4th tier guys, when you have a home grown talent that can do EXACTLY what they would do in the rotation.

Now if they go and get a Peavy, Oswalt, Bedard or Lee….i’m all for it. But IMO, it wouldn’t make sense to get a lesser tier guy, when your still going to give up some prospects, might as well get somebody you can slot behind Hamels and raise another trophy.

  15. Bruce Says:

Don M, considering that Bastardo came up on a “fast track” and originally groomed as reliever, it’s obvious to me that he is being monitored for innings pitched as well as the obligatory pitch count. At age 23, it’s makes sense to nurture him along the same way they approached Hamels early in his career.

  16. Travis Says:

List of Pitchers linked to Phillies this year:

    Clay Buchholz
    Brad Penny
    Roy Halladay
    Jeremy Guthrie
    Erik Bedard
    Jarrod Washburn
    Matt Cain
    Jake Peavy
    Javier Vasquez
    Roy Oswalt
    Cliff Lee
    Jason Marquis
    Vicente Padilla
    Tom Glavine
    Aaron Harang
    Bronson Arroyo
    Brandon Webb
    Noah Lowry
    Chris Young

If I forgot someone, feel free to add

    * Name 5 pitchers you think that have ALL OR MOST of these qualities:

    – the Phillies have the most realistic chance of getting
    – will produce at CBP
    – won’t feel pressure in Philly
    – you think are good
    – starting near top of rotation

To be honest I think all of these pitchers will feel pressure in Philadelphia because none of them have ever pitched for the Phillies except for Vicente Padilla who stunk it up.

  17. Don M Says:

I agree that Bastardo will have some growing pains.. he came from nowhere.. and he’s winning games on his fastball-alone right now

he NEEDS to get those other pitchers going to continue to be effective.

I just don’t like Steve Phillips.. he was a terrible GM, he knows nothing about the game, but thinks he knows everything.

    ….
I’d like to know where Clay Bucholz and Javier Vazquez came from.. they aren’t going anywhere

  18. Don M Says:

They need to decide is Michael Taylor is a better prospect than John Mayberry Jr.

if he is.. then we can afford to keep Mayberry on the bench up here in the majors.. if he isn’t (and they think he might be an MLB regular-everday player soon) then we need to get a RH-bat somewhere..

  19. Geoff Says:

I would change that to: Will be able to handle the Pressure (aka, stone cold focused).

Thats really tough to name 5 that meet that. NONE of them meet all 5 criteria.

A lot of the good righties are also flyball pitchers: Cain, Young, Oswalt come to mind. Theyd suck if they came here. Brad Penny would suck. Guthrie – eh would be ok. The guys from the Reds wont be traded. Bedard is done after 100 pitches everytime.

Thats rough, itd have to be someone who could ADAPT their style to this ballpark (maybe someone like Cain learns to throw more sinking fastballs. Maybe VIcente Padilla learns how to not suck (yeah right).

  20. Bruce Says:

Travis, you should rephrase your line as..”linked by RUMORS..to Phillies. ;-)

While it may be fun for those who speculate and daydream, I’ll stay with the facts and the identified source (usually within the team’s organization).

In the meantime, have fun with the “rumors”.

  21. Chuck Says:

Steve Phillips sucks at just about everything. His commentary on ESPN is more ridiculous than his GM skills…or lack thereof.

And I completely agree about Bastardo…good live fastball…but he has to have those other pitches to be successful.

I like Mayberry and think he has a future…but if he is just going to languish on the bench then, yes, he should be moved for another effective RH bat off the bench. Not sure if Spilborgs is the right answer though…

  22. Bruce Says:

I haven’t read here what it may cost to obtain someone like Spillborghs who is a regular in the Rockies’ lineup. That can be a stumbling block to any possible trade talk.

  23. I know Sal.. Says:

Lidge to the 15 day DL boys and girls!

  24. Justin Says:

YEP! JUST REPORTED ON CSN AND HIGH CHEESE by David Murphy

  25. Justin Says:

They called up Paul Bako to take his place on the 25 man roster! YESSSS!!!! No more Chris Coste behind the plate for the Phils!!!

  26. Bruce Says:

    That news floored me.

    from Phila. Inquirer:

“Righthander Brad Lidge was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right knee, retroactive to June 7, the Phillies said today.

To take his spot on the 25-man roster, the Phillies selected the contract of catcher Paul Bako from double-A Reading.”

  27. Bruce Says:

You’re being presumptious Justin, on Coste. While it may be unusual to carry 3 catchers, teams in the past have resorted to that kind of roster.

  28. The Dispy Says:

So. The other shoe has dropped. I guess that means:

    9th – Madson
    8th – Romero
    7th – Condrey, Eyre, Durbin
    6th – Park

Hmmmm. I find it odd that the Phils will now carry 6 bullpen guys and while adding a third catcher. Why Bako and not Escalona????? I smell a trade in the works.

    The Dipsy
    The Dipsy

  29. The Dispy Says:

And why Bako and not Mayberry????? This is silly.

    The Dipsy

  30. ChaseUtleyMVP Says:

the key part now is Durbin and Condrey
JC has command issues with righties, so those 2 guys will be called on to get outs in the 8th.

Im fine with Maddog closing. his stuff is great

  31. Justin Says:

It’s not presumptious Bruce, why would they call Bako up instead of Mayberry or Cairo or Ozuna, because they rather have Coste’s bat as the RH bat off the bench then behind the plate, David Murphy who’s a beat writer for the Daily News said as much in his post.

  32. Bruce Says:

I’m anxious to read more on Lidge’s injury. Losing your closer is never good news. Obviously, the wheels are turning within the organization in an attempt to find a temporary solution. All eyes on Madson. Is he the answer?

  33. The Dispy Says:

Romero has problems with control against righties? Uuuuuh. Ummmm. He does? I think he gets the 8th all to himself.

    The Dipsy

  34. ChaseUtleyMVP Says:

    Are you kidding Dipsy?

yes. he struggles with his command against righties.

  35. The Dispy Says:

I don’t see it. But I think he gets the 8th. Durbin is not going to pitch in there. Nor Condrey. They’re just not good enough.

    The Dipsy

  36. Justin Says:

Dominic Brown, the Phils top position prospect and basically top prospect, is going to be out 3-4 weeks after “slightly” fracturing his fifth finger on his right hand yesterday after being hit with a pitch.

  37. Jason N Says:

Can we please all agree, right now, never to call him “Spilly”?

  38. ChaseUtleyMVP Says:

of the 5 righties hes faced this year.
2 have gotten hits, 1 has walked.
an average of .400 an OBP of .500
    no strikeouts.

while lefties are hitting .200 with 1 hit 1 walk and 2 K’s

and if that doesnt do it…

    in 2009
righties hit .282 with 27 walks.
lefites hit .102 with 11 walks.

    again,
    struggles with command to righties

  39. ChaseUtleyMVP Says:

  40. Bruce Says:

Justin, you may very well be right about that. However, it’s odd that the team would call up another lefthanded bat who has not hit higher than .217 the past 3 years as a part time player. I suspect it’s Bako who will come off the bench to spell Ruiz and Coste occasionally. Or as one poster suggested, a possible trade brewing involving Bako?

    Ahh..h, the wheels are turning.

  41. Richie Says:

Guys I posted this as a comment on the other thread earlier and it said it is awaiting moderation? Why do you think it said that?

The really true advantage that no one seems to talk about with the Phillies over the Mets is the fact that most of the core Phillie’s players came from the farm and were not just signed as FA. When you are a big name free agent like Delgado, Beltran, Santana, K-Rod, etc. You have to try to fit in and live up to the pressures of a FA contract and I just don’t think the chemistry is the same as when you kind of grow up together like the Phillies have.

  42. Chuck Says:

Madson should get the shot now. The closer role is his and his to lose in my opinion.

    Coste off the bench……..yeah, I don’t know……I smell a trade too.

  43. The Big Dipper Says:

Who in their right minds would trade for Bako?

We picked him up on May 18 and obviously no one else was looking for him then so why would they now?

    The Big Dipper

  44. metsblow4show Says:

Maybe they brought up Bako because Coste might be in the deal for Spillborghs. Just a thought.

  45. Chuck P Says:

Wow… a lot of interesting developments here.

I guess that Lidge’s knee is worse than we thought. Either that or they want to give him some time to exercise his demons…

I like Spillborghs… not Marquis and not for Donald/Kendrick and Carrasco.

This all smells really fishy to me… Bako?? According to B/R, he bats lefthanded… why not Marson or Mayberry? Why not an extra bullpen guy?

  46. ChaseUtleyMVP Says:

    something is off…
i don’t know but calling up a 3rd catcher, and leaving the pen a guy short now…and calling up another lefthanded bat for the bench?

    hmmmm…
something is gonna go soon i think

  47. The Dispy Says:

Cmon Dipper….lol….Coste would be betting traded, not Bako. I’ll give in to ya Chase. Romero does have some problems with righties. Well then the eighth could look like this: Romero, Condrey, Eyre if you have to go L/R/L. Yuk. Or let Mad Dog come in and take the last hitter in the eighth if he’s a righty. Or even last two hiiters. Imagine: a 1 2/3 inning save from the closer. Nah…thats too absurd. They did stuff like that in the old days, though.

    The Dipsy

  48. Chuck P Says:

Another interesting development… off-topic but with far more national implications…

NBC and the NHL has apparently blocked “Joe-Vision” for tonight’s Stanley Cup game. Joe Vision is the remote viewing at Joe Frazier Arena in Detroit where fans gather inside the arena to watch the game. A source says that it is because the event results in a negative impact on NBC’s ratings. Can you imagine if this catches on? It’s really senseless, to me.

  49. The Big Dipper Says:

Fair enough Dipsy but who wants Coste? He is an average backup at best.

    The Big Dipper

  50. Geoff Says:

Yeah something funny is going on here…calling up Bako doesnt make sense…

  51. metsblow4show Says:

Hey Big Dipper, an average backup who can swing the bat a little are hard to come by.

  52. The Dispy Says:

Well, for some unknown reason, the Marlins were reported to have some interest in Coste. Hey, the guy can hit and he plays the position of catcher. The only reason I can POSSIBLY think of fpr making this move is that they might wanna use Coste earlier in the game as a righty pinch hitter without having to put him in the game defensively. By way of illustration, Coste comes in to try and knock in a big run in the six or seventh and then he leaves the game. Ruiz gets hurt the next inning. Who catches. I guess they feel that Coste is their best righty bat off the bench. Which is a sad statement in itself

    The Dipsy

  53. Chuck P Says:

You’re right… that’s a very logical explanation, Dipsy. It makes a lot of sense when you consider how well Ruiz has been hitting. They don’t really wanna take the bat out of his hands right now and they would certainly rather have him behind the plate but they still want to give Coste some opportunities… bring in a 3rd insurance catcher and Coste becomes your primary RH bat.

  54. CT Phillies Fan Says:

Anybody think maybe they knew Lidge would need put on DL, but had him “pitch through it” until Romero was back and ready to contribute? Plus, with Park going 3 innings the other night and doing a great job, provides flexibility and allows them to go with one less guy in the bullpen

  55. hrhittr7273 Says:

Travis has a good point about the trade. I think Spilborghs would be good here, he’s a great pinch hitter, and Marquis has been outstanding this year and would fit in great in the rotation. They need to hold on to Carrasco though. I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved Bastardo, because I don’t think he’s going to keep up this success.
