Romero Could Be Charged With Battery
Posted by Amanda Orr, Tue, June 30, 2009 12:26 PM
The St. Petersburg Police Department filed a complaint against J.C Romero to the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney’s office and he may be charged with battery.
“Remember, this is a simple battery,” George Kajtsa said. “No weapon was used. There were no injuries to the victim whatsoever, except as he says in the report he was embarrassed because it happened in front of other fans and his family. This is a very minor incident so the state’s attorney will probably concentrate on more serious matters, but it will be up to the state’s attorney to make the determination.”
Robert Eaton asked for an autograph, but Romero ignored him. Eaton made a comment about steroids and got into screaming match with Romero. Romero allegedly hit Eaton.

I think that Robert Eaton hurts their case because he is not a sympathetic figure in that he provoked whatever happened with his insults. There could always be someone in the State Attorney’s office looking for some fame but I don’t think J.C. is famous enough to achieve that. I agree that, overall, its just not worth the effort for them.
I’m guessing they will simply let the case drop or come up with a plea bargain giving J.C. some community service time.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:45 pm
There should be an instigator penalty for real life too.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
Phillies fans, pull your Free J.C. shirts out of the closet.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
If J.C hit the guy then he deserves what he gets. Regardless of what that “fan” may say, that doesn’t give anyone the right to touch someone else.
I am actually friends with a pro atheete and has told me repeatedly that he has no problem what so ever signing autographs for kids but when it comes to adults he and other athletes are very gaurded because adults aren’t asking for an autograph for an autographs sake, they are asking for an autograph so they can turn around and make money of it. Whenever I have gone to pro sporting events I always see athletes signing stuff for kids and then being a little leary when its an adult. Can you blame them? People are making money off their name. Doesn’t seem fair to me.
I hope this all just goes away but I have a feeling it won’t.
This Robert Eaton guy is clearly a scum bag, he said that he is embarrassed because he was assaulted infront of family and other fans but clearly not embarrassed that he is a horrible role model for his kids by yelling obscenities and baiting other people. I guess that is ok for his kids to see as long as the person he is going after backs down and doesn’t say or do anything back.
And they say Philadelphia fans are bad.

Simple Battery is punishable by a 1 year max jail term sentence in the Sunshine State … just FYI, doubt the case will even be considered. Look for the accuser (Eaton) to follow up with a civil suit for “Damages” and his late night infomercial lawyer to cite Romero’s “Previous Unsavory Activity,” with an expert witness from GNC.
June 30th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
This is ridiculous…
June 30th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
It’s obvious that this Eaton dude is a duche, but if J.C. hit him, then he’s in the wrong.
June 30th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
JC is a big guy, right, and it says there were no injuries. I think “hit” and “battery” are not the same here. Remember, battery is any physical contact, not just slugging someone. Probably JC just pushed him back a bit, like pushing his chest with his hands. If he hit him, I am sure there would at least be a bruise or some sort of injury. Well, maybe he punched him in the stomach.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Im hoping he gets suspended just til October. Save us twenty runs that he would give up. Steriods are draining him. Why do you think he was so good the world series year. CHEATER. I dont care if you got them over gnc, im sure there was more.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Jeff, you suck, i kinda hope JC would romp on you a little, seems like you need a good beating to stop running your mouth at every little thing.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Allegedly… look, if an athlete batters someone, they should be punished… professional athletes should understand that they posess abnormal strength and that should not be used to harm someone… HOWEVER if this was a shove or something benign, then we shouldn’t be talking about this.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Does the Nation still have any of those “Free J.C.” T-shirts? This Eaton guy is a gold-digger and a moron, and I’m behind J.C. 100 percent here.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
What should kill this case is that Eaton said that his neck was injured in an article the other day, and now this one says that there were no injuries.
“Remember, this is a simple battery,” George Kajtsa said. “No weapon was used. There were no injuries to the victim whatsoever, except as he says in the report he was embarrassed because it happened in front of other fans and his family.”
June 30th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
He was on WIP this morning and Angelo asked if he was hurt. He said his neck is injured and doesn’t know the severity of the injury. I could hear the laughter from the WIP side for a brief second and then they turned the microphones off of whoever was laughing. I found it funny.
Bottom line, like my father taught me, don’t talk smack if you can’t protect yourself.
June 30th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
If your drunk and you run your mouth than you deserve what you get. He just ran his mouth b/c he thought he would have no recourse since they were in the stadium (if you can call it that) and all those fans (which were mostly philly fans anyway.) F**K TAMPA!
June 30th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
I think Romero has been smart not talking about it. It prevents the situation from getting any worse. Something tells me hes got a smart lawyer behind him.
June 30th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
A smart and happy lawyer…. I’m sure that he did what he could to look into whether anything could be done about that 50 game suspension…
June 30th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
FIRST OF ALL I BELIEVE THAT J.C. IS INNOCENT OF THE STEROID CHARGES. SECONDLY EATON HAD NO RIGHT TO INSULT J.C. ABOUT THE ISSUE. I CLASSIFY EATON IN THE SAME CATAGORY AS ADAM EATON WHO “STOLE $24,000,000 FROM THE PHILLIES FOR NOT PITCHING FOR TWO YEARS. THE TWO EATONS ARE LOSERS!!!
I HAVE BEEN A PHILLIES FAN FOR 49 YEARS!
June 30th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
JC is my boy. he grew up in the same town as my dad, so i know that honor means it all to him. to have some ball-less wonder like eaton insulting his honor by calling him a cheater, which he ISN’T, he provoked a response. JC has his pride, and this eaton guy should be locked up for making false allegations of injury.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:09 am
“no injuries” Hmm, did Romero “hit”him or push him out of the way. If Romero “hit” him I would be surprised there is no injury at all considering a bruise is an injury. To me it sounds like Romer pushed him out of the way.
July 1st, 2009 at 7:10 am
as for “false allegations” JC Romero has every right to pursue a civil suit against this idiot.
July 1st, 2009 at 9:23 am
I’ll never have anything to do with anyone named Eaton again…Wait! I said that last year!
July 1st, 2009 at 2:02 pm
One time an alien told me to punch a fan… so I did.
July 1st, 2009 at 2:04 pm
How do Philly fans have the right to criticize other fans for their behavior? You guys breed obnoxious, drunk fans who do nothing but provide bad examples for kids.
July 1st, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Role Model, this type of behavior is not exclusive to Philadelphia fans. Come down off of your high horse.
