All Star Game: Three Phillies Headed to St. Louis
Posted by Amanda Orr, Sun, July 05, 2009 06:11 PM
The fans voted for Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez to start the 2009 All Star Game in St. Louis. Ryan Howard made the team as a reserve.
Utley is headed to his fourth consecutive All Star Game. The last second baseman to start in four straight was Craig Biggio and the last Phillies player to do it was Mike Schmidt. Utley is batting .301 with 18 home runs.
Ibanez, who remains on the disabled list, will make his first All Star appearance.
Ryan Howard will be making his second All Star appearance and first since 2006. Howard is batting .252 and is third in the league with 60 runs batted in.
There is one empty roster spot. The Phillies could have one more player headed to the mid-summer classic. Vote Shane Victorino for the final vote!

It’s interesting to note that on the NL roster there are FOUR players listed for 1st base. Also just TWO catchers for each league. I point out the last field position because of a recent All Star game that went to extra innings.
July 5th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
Well our bullpen REALLY needs that rest theyll get by not working in the AS game.
July 5th, 2009 at 7:03 pm
I am shocked and disturbed that my high school buddy, Jamie Moyer, is not an All-Star. After all, he leads the team in victories and has one of the highest ERAs in the league. What else can he do?
July 5th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
does anybody knw where you can rewatch the games online?
July 5th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Chutley, no clue here. Sorry.
July 5th, 2009 at 8:54 pm
@Chutley if you pay for the mlb premium package on mlb.com you can rewatch any game I’m pretty sure. I also think you can pay for just a day/month at a time instead of paying for the rest of the season as it can get pricey.
Anyone know what players Charlie handpicked as reserves? I know he got to pick 5 pitchers and 3 position players … so just curious if Ryan was one of them or not.
Glad none of our pitching staff has to worry about this game. Rest is much needed.
Odds Ibanez plays anyone?
July 5th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Is there a way we can team up with an AL team trying to get their Final Vote player in and we vote for theirs they vote for Shane?
July 5th, 2009 at 9:00 pm
i think chase has 18 home runs
July 5th, 2009 at 9:01 pm
just checked he does
July 5th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Sorry about that, the stats were prior to today’s game. I updated them though. Thanks Jordan.
July 6th, 2009 at 8:05 am
I was under the impression Charlie picked Howard. I was kinda surprised he didn’t take Feliz too.
July 6th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Papa Thompson…why would he pick Feliz? The best 3B this year isn’t even going to the ASG…Pablo Sandoval.
July 6th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Pablo Sandoval looks like an oompa loompa that grew up somehow. paleaaaase he may have had the best first half of anyone but he’s far from best 3b in the league
July 6th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I thought he’d take Feliz because he could, because Feliz is having one of his better seasons and because veterans like Feliz, who are generally underrated but have good first halves, often are rewarded with All-Star selections.
Who cares about Sandoval? Charlie’s under no obligation to him. Let the fans pick him if he’s so great. Feliz, on the other hand, is Charlie’s guy. Seemed like an easy choice to me.
July 6th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Too bad they couldn’t find room to add at least one pitcher from the Phillies. Jamie Moyer would be a logical choice for the All Star Roster. He has been one of Phillies most consistent starters with quality starts and lead the team in wins (7). It would also be a tribute to Moyer’s long career and his accomplishments including 253 wins and counting.
July 6th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Well its the fans who choose this final spot so vote Shane!
July 6th, 2009 at 8:37 pm
Wow, you guys are all huge homers…Moyer sucks this year and Feliz is a slightly below average bat at a premium offensive position. Who cares if Charlie can take players, he shouldn’t take players that aren’t that good. If he wanted to take any of his own guys he shouldn’t have even taken Howard…he should have taken Werth.
July 7th, 2009 at 12:10 am
Hee, hee..Phil, you’re so funny. Your contrariness is so evident in many of your posts. By the way, I’m still holding off in joining your fan club for Werth (chuckles).
July 7th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Why Bruce, because he doesn’t have that great of a BA? Werth has been better than Howard this year. He has a solid slg% and obp leading to a good OPS+. He also plays a more premium defensive position and plays it incredible. He also has tons of speed and swipes bags. Howard has been a good defensive 1B this year and a mediocre offensive 1B. He should not have been in the ASG. I have no idea why he is. He’s not even the 4th best 1B in the NL.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Werth? How can we justify Werth going over Howard?
Anybody notice the payroll list on the right? Myers @ $12 mill? Thievery!!…. whether he’s hurt or 100%…. it’s absolute thievery. He’s worth about $5 mill, MAX.
I disagree with Pujols doing the HR derby on Monday night. Not that I’m a St. Louis fan of course, but Albert has a legit shot at the Triple Crown. Doing the HR Derby may put a kink in is MVP shot and triple cornw chances. It’s be cool to see someone who is CLEAN and legit actually accomplish that feat in my lifetime.
