All Stars + Blanton = Victory
Posted by Amanda Orr, Fri, July 10, 2009 10:05 PM
The All Star syndrome is contagious. First it was Raul Ibanez and Chase Utley. Then, Ryan Howard. Next, Shane Victorino was voted in. Now, Jayson Werth is added. Several of those All Stars played a key role in today’s win and Joe Blanton pitched an All Star-type performance.
In 7.1 innings, Blanton allowed one earned run; a Garrett Jones moonshot over the centerfield bricks. He allowed four hits and one walk. He struck out six.
In the third, Utley’s single scored Victorino. The play at the plate was close, but Victorino’s textbook slide tied the game at one. The Phillies took a 3-1 lead on Werth’s two-run double that scored Utley and Howard.
Like Blanton, Zach Duke was also dealing. In eight innings, he allowed three runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out six. However, the Pirates weren’t able to support him.
Despite giving up a solo home run to Brandon Moss and allowing the tying run to reach base, Brad Lidge converted the save by striking out Delwyn Young after falling behind in the count, 3-0. With the 3-2 win over the Pirates, the Phillies have won seven of eight.

Does anybody have any doubt that the Phillies are going to sweep the Pirates, move to 10 games over .500, and have at least a 4 game lead in the East as of the All-Star Break?
We think not.
July 10th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
Nice job, Blanton. Pirates are bad, but still an impressive performance by Joe.
July 10th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
Where’s tim been lately?
July 10th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
Tim resigned from blogging to concentrate on enjoying life.
July 10th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
oh look the D-Backs are up 7-0 again, can they win this time? Haren pitching helps.
July 10th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
Keith, seeing how their Bullpen gave up 10 runs in 7th inning was it? I am not so confident of that one.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Good for tim!!, Hopefully he’s enjoying the Phillies even more!!
July 10th, 2009 at 11:05 pm
Is marson on the way can’t go with bako and ruiz. too catcher who can’t hit there weight.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
4daysrest.com – I am feeling a bit sweepish. Is there anyone in Bucs rotation who you think could work for us and do you think Pirates would sell them without fear of causing a riot among the remaining Pirates faithful?
July 10th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
I am guessing here that Blanton did indeed get the Ashburn tonight.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:08 pm
Where oh where has Eli gone? Oh where oh where can he be? Come on Eli, 6.5 games back, those Met’s are right on our tail, here come the Mets, knock knock! here they come! Right?
July 10th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Yeah what ever happened to all those pesky mets fans that were telling us we were going to be knocked out of first.
great win tonight
July 10th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
Wow even the Nationals are tied in the 9th. Also Heres to hoping the D-Backs can hold on to their 7-0 lead.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
Nats just lost on a walk off by the Astros.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:13 pm
Trolls are in their caves right now. Oops spoke wow the Nats suck.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
You guys are too funny. Let me tell you something that might shock you. I am a bad Mets fan. I just like to poke fun at you guys because I am not worthy of being a Phillies fan. Why can’t I be a Phillies fan? Because I live in the NY area. Do you think I’m stupid? I am very disappointed in you all.
I am now excited to see if we can beat out the Washington Nationals. It should be a close race if you get what I mean. Mets suck and I am sad. Everyone happy? I’m sorry for being a Mets fan.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
you can put it on the booooooarddddd, yes!
July 10th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
Things do look bad and getting worse for my Amazins. As a Jets fan and Islander fan I expect heartbreaks, curses and jinxes,so this is no different.Someday in the year 2145 one of these teams will win as I at 175 years old will celebrate! lol….Now as for the tools like Eli (Yes Eli……I am calling you OUT.Come in here and defend yourself if you can) haven’t got the cajones to show in here.To be fair When it comes to the Mets in 4th,I remember Dennis Green and his famous “You are what your record says you are” speech and look at as “It is what it is”.Mets have to do something to redeem themselves whether it is as a spoiler or in the hot stove season December 2009.And yes Georgie the Mets lost, thank god for the Nats.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
Six bucks and my Right Eye says that wasn’t Eli.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:34 pm
D-Backs still winning 7-0, only 6 more outs and we’ll be 3 games up
July 10th, 2009 at 11:42 pm
Im sure that the Eli post above is not th real Eli. As for closers. look at the Dodgers, even Broxton is having issues tonight. He went into the bottom of the 10th with a 6 run lead, and now its 12-8 with 1 out, man on 1st and 3rd. Grrrumpy Miner, I dont think I have even seen a Mets and a Jets fan. Most the Mets fans I know are Giants fans. NL to AFC? Hmmm.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
Sometimes looks can be decieving Brian! lol. I was born in Brooklyn raised 5 Miles away from Shea so Teams from Queens are in my blood. As for the Islanders,I grew up during the Dynasty years and hooked up with them. One playoff round win in 16 years for the Islanders is painful enough but the heartaches with the Mets and Jets kill me.Yes now everyone knows I am a glutton of punishment, sorry I root for the underdog.Better days ahead brother…..better days ahead.
July 10th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
Also my hatred runs deep with the Marlins (Recent history puts a stamp on that) AND the Miami Dolphins so needless to say why I hate teams from the greater Miami Area,Nice city and beaches but hate the sports teams with a passion.
July 11th, 2009 at 12:06 am
Actually I’ve noticed that Yankees usually go with Giants and Mets go with Jets. It’s either because the Yankees and Giants were the first to exist and/or Mets and Jets just sound right together.
Oh and D-Backs won, we’re 3 games up!
July 11th, 2009 at 12:07 am
Ah, the wonderful game of baseball .. just 8 days ago and everyone was losing their sh*t as the Fightin’ Phils came crashing into a weekend series against the Mets. I don’t know who’s memory is shorter; the players or the fans.
We got to love the way the boys are playing now – but we’ve really got to distance ourselves now from the pack and take advantage of the situation. However, hope Ruben doesn’t rest on his laurels and not aggressively pursue a solid arm. An aging Pedro just isn’t good enough. As others have said – we’ve got plenty of other options for the #5 that are better.
Speaking of trades – what’d everyone think of the Francoeur/Church swap? Kind of a blah move IMO; and it’s going to be really weird seeing Frenchy in a non-Braves uni!
I’m anxiously awaiting our next move. Let’s go Phils!!
July 11th, 2009 at 12:44 am
no hitter for the Giants’ Jonathan Sanchez
July 11th, 2009 at 12:55 am
geez its been a while since i’ve worried about facing the giants…at least, hopefully, they can knock the dodgers down a peg
July 11th, 2009 at 1:17 am
fillyp-i think they liked Frenchy for his fielding, esp. he’s got a canon for an arm. one of the few RFs who can gun you down at 3rd. Certainly not for his batting, Chruch and Frenchy power numbers pretty close but Chruch’s AVG=.280 and Frenchy’s a paltry .250
July 11th, 2009 at 7:54 am
This has been a fun streak and a different pace than right before the AS break last year.
BTW – did anyone catch the no-hitter that was thrown in SF? With 1 out in the 9th, Rowand made another spectacular catch in center field to preserve the no-hitter for this kid who replaced the Unit a fella named Jonathan Sanchez.
Still love to watch Rowand.
Question for the group – is what we are seeing the true face of the following Phillies? For instance, first time AS Shane Victorino. Has he developed into a .300 hitter or is this the apex of a decent career for him?
Is Jason Werth (another first time AS) really a power threat or is this a streaky surge we have been enjoying for the month of July?
Is Jimmy done with the schnide (hitting over .350 for the month of July)?
Will Chase remain consistent for the remainder of the year?
Has anybody really noticed how badly Ryan Howard is hitting? His July is awful – aside from the power outage, he is hitting .188 for the month of July and amidst all these runs being scored, he has 3 rbi in 10 games!
Have we seen the best of Jamie? How many more times will Chahlie let him give up 6 runs in 5 innings –
I have no idea the answers to any of these questions but I sure am enjoying the ride! Go Phils!
July 11th, 2009 at 8:20 am
It seems like Shane might be having a career year, but it could be because he hasn’t had any injuries or anything to really bring him down yet. Werth’s always had power, a lot of the homers he hits aren’t just in to the first row, they’re waaaay out of here. I was at the game he hit that shot in to Big Mac Land in St. Louis in May, it was a big one. I certainly hope Jimmy is done with his slump. Maybe that time off helped him clear his head after all. Chase seems to still be pretty healthy, at least as far as the hip goes. If he stays that way, which may be difficult as hard as he plays, I think he’ll finish with something along the lines of .315-.320 with nearly 40 homers. Thankfully, Howard is a second half guy so hopefully he goes out and has a nice break in his hometown for the All Star game, then comes back and starts raising that average. I think we may have seen the “best” of Jamie Moyer when I was about 7 or 8…
July 11th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Howard’s hitting???????….at last count 101 STRIKE OUTS… say hello to 200 by the end of the year….
July 11th, 2009 at 10:14 am
Why have we not traded for Halladay yet? This is so unbelievable.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:05 am
And that’s just an idiotic comment, why haven’t the Angels traded for him yet? Trades don’t happen like turning the tap on just because YOU want it to happen. Have you missed the comments from reputable insiders like Peter Gammons putting the chances of Halladay actually being traded by the deadline at 20%?
Another excellent pitching performance from Blanton, he’s following a month with an ERA of 3.62 with 0.61. Seems he’s really hit his stride.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:16 am
fillyp, what are those options for a #5?
July 11th, 2009 at 11:18 am
As much as I want Halladay it will take time. Quick deals is how you get taken. Everyone thinks the Jays have all the leverage, but they have to be careful here. if they don’t trade Halladay he could screw them next year and avoid voiding his no trade. if he does he’s a yankee or a redsox in 2011 were he’ll get a 4 year deal for $100 million.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:22 am
We need to be patient because the more I look at it, Drabek,Donald and Marson is a heck of start to a 5 prospect deal. I think the Jays would be nuts to turn down Drabek, Marson, Donald, Savory and Carpenter/Kendrick, but that’s just me.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:28 am
I don’t even know if a package of Drabek, Taylor, Donald, Marson and Carpenter gets it done.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:33 am
Whats been rumoured is that the Jays are looking for two near major league ready and two good prospects, it’s going to be hard to believe the Jays will be able to prize both Donald and a one of our 3 top prospects and still be able to get much more in the deal. Amaro’s not stupid and he’s not going to offer the world past what a team like the Angels will be offering. Remember the Jays don’t have to trade Halladay their just fielding offers and their not going to get the kind of offers being spoken of here because no-ones going to be offering that many established prospects into a deal and take on all that salary.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:37 am
If the Jays won’t budge for Drabek, Taylor, Donald, Marson and Carpenter I’d walk away and look for another #2 or #3. We’re in a perfect position right now. 3 games up with 4 games in hand allows us to be patient and see what other teams become sellers.
Not that I’d do it, but wouldn’t the Indians take Drabek, Taylor, Donald, Marson for Lee?
July 11th, 2009 at 11:40 am
If the Phils were offering two major league ready prospects plus two elite prospects plus further prospects Halladay would have been traded here a week ago, no-ones going to be offering that much in a package. It’ll either be headed by major league ready prospects or elite prospects or one of both but not the whole gang, it’s miles more than anyone has paid for a pitcher with Halladays contract situation.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:41 am
psujoe, I have to think the Indians would take that package for Lee.
Keith Law (who used to work for Ricciardi in Toronto) said in a chat on Thursday that Drabek, Brown or Taylor, Donald and Marson wouldn’t be enough. I was surprised, but I think we’ve all been jaded by the Johan Santana fleecing of the Twins trade.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:43 am
NJ, would Drabek, Donald, Marson and Carpenter fit that mdoel?
July 11th, 2009 at 11:45 am
In the Dan Haren trade, the D-backs gave up Carlos Gonzalez (who was a TOP prospect), Brett Anderson (a TOP pitching prospect) two solid prospects in Aaron Cunningham and Chris Carter and two major league ready pitchers in Dana Eveland and Greg Smith.
Haren was under contract for longer than Halladay, but at the time was nowhere near as proven as Halladay is now.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:53 am
Griffin looking at the Haren deal the D-Backs also got a pitching prospect going there way in the deal, of course that might something that happens here but I can’t see the Phils offering a tremendous amount past what the Mets offered for Johan (remember those prospects were thought of highly at the time) and I think comments like Keith Law and Peter Gammon’s reaffirms the idea he’s not going to get traded.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:53 am
Also, when the Mariners traded for Erik Bedard, they gave up a top prospect in Adam Jones, a major league ready power arm in George Sherril and a bunch of good, not great, prospects. One of them turned out to be Chris Tillman and now that trade is an easy win for the Orioles.
Peter Gammons reported yesterday that he thinks there is a 20% chance that Halladay will get traded. So if the Phils offer an underwhelming package, the Jays will just keep Halladay.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:57 am
Yeah, I’d love to get him, but if a package of Drabek, Brown or Taylor, Donald and Marson doesn’t get it done, then it’s starting to become silly.
Also, I’d like the Phillies to keep Marson (who is hot of late) because I think he’ll be the Phillies starting catcher next season.
July 11th, 2009 at 11:58 am
Personally I think Riccardi’s playing a clever game knowing he doesn’t need to trade Halladay and has two more conventional windows of opportunity to get a deal done. I think he’s being floated to swell his value so that the Jays can get what they want when a deal is revisited down the road.
I can see a deal with a much as say Donald, Carrasco and Taylor plus minor prospects but I think any more an a deal fizzles until talks resume in the off-season. Just my personal opinion.
July 11th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
I have to agree….the chances of landing Halladay are much less than 50%…not sure if the 20% Peter Gammons threw out there is accurate….but the point is that it has more of a chance of NOT happening than happening. Amaro has to stay in control of this and not give up the farm. I’m confident that he will take the right approach.. Also, I ve said this repeatedly…..we can’t trade Happ AND Drabek….one or the other, Drabek being my preference for going. (Happ is too proven at the major league level to be traded now.) That’s just me….maybe I’m completely wrong with my thinking.
July 11th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Yeah Griffin….the O’s completely got the best of that deal. Sherrill is a stud in the 9th inning and Adam Jones is going to be an incredible long-term player.
July 11th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
Griffin…I hear you on the Marson thing….but I’m not sure if he’s not expendable at this point in a trade. Wouldn’t Chooch be the catcher for the next 2 years?
July 11th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
After the initial frenzy as passed I think everyone now is much calmer and realizes the folly in trading away 2 or 3 of those top 3 prospects we have. I mean, 2 of those guys will be on the Phillies in 2 years. One of them may still be blocked. You can afford to deal one (Brown) and thats about it – along with the lesser prosects like Carrasco/Donald, and the filler.
July 11th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Chuck, I think Marson will be a little better than Ruiz. The reluctance to trade Marson shouldn’t preclude getting Halladay. I’d rather put someone else in the deal as the 5th prospect. If the Jays demand Marson or no deal, then I’d part with Marson.
July 11th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
In the long run Marson MAY be better….but…..I think Ruiz is a very good catcher and has proven to be offensively good as well (although he has struggled as of late). I just think that if the Jays were to say no deal unless Marson was included then I think you have to part with him. But you already said that. Also, putting Marson in the deal depends on who else is in it as well. It’s that “not wanting to give up the entire farm” thing again.
July 11th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
I’d see the attitude as the Jays can have guys that can help them now in bulk or guys that have a higher upside down the road, by all means work on a deal in the middle-ground which is where I’m sure both parties are at but not both. I want to know what teams like the Angels are willing to offer because bidding against ourselves were going to loose every time.
July 11th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
If the Angels include Jered Weaver (doubtful) then I don’t think we’ll be able to match that.
Drabek is not without health questions and some prospect analysts think his future may be as a closer.Taylor is tearing it up in AA, there are still questions about his power once he reaches the major leagues.Roy Halladay is proven.
I just think that getting Halladay is worth it, especially since Halladay is arguably more valuable to the Phillies than any of the other contenders.
