Gameday: Phillies (39-35) At Braves (36-40)

Posted by Amanda Orr, Wed, July 01, 2009 05:45 PM

Philadelphia Phillies (39-35) at Atlanta Braves (36-40)

Cole Hamels (4-4, 4.44 ERA) vs Jair Jurrjens (5-6, 2.93 ERA)

Time: 7:00 p.m at Turner Field
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 93
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Cole Hamels looks to rebound from a rough outing against the Blue Jays.  He hasn’t been consistent and right now would be the perfect time for him to get on a roll.  In 12 career starts against the Atlanta Braves, Hamels is 7-3 with a 3.42 ERA.

The 23 year old, Jair Jurrjens has avoided the sophomore slump.  His win-loss record is deceiving as he hasn’t always received run support from his teammates.  In April, Jurrjens earned the win in 5.2 innings against the Phillies.

After an 0-for-5 night, Charlie Manuel says not to worry about Rollins.  He said his timing was off and that “he’ll be OK.”  Rollins needs to turn around his struggles, along with Ryan Madson. In his last six appearances he is 0-2 with a 9.53 ERA (six earned runs in 5.2 innings). He has also blown three games in that span.

The lineup will look a little different with Greg Dobbs starting his second straight game in left field and Paul Bako getting the start.

Your Gameday Beer:The Miller-owned Leinenkugel Brewing Company from Wisconsin serves up today’s beer, Classic Amber Lager. This thick and creamy beer reminds you of Killians Red or even Guinness but has a much maltier taste. The overall taste is average, not too strong so you can pound a few. It is also available in a Light variety so you can pound even more. Have some Latin American food like roasted pork and fried plantains with this one. -By Brian

what the hell is this infatuation with this Paul Bako, I truly hope he rips the cover off the ball tonight and goes 5-5 with a HR,
But I would still say the same thing, I get Ruiz needs to take some games off, but he IS the STARTING CATCHER on this team, he is going to have a week off soon enough, let the guy play. I really just do not get it. While I am on the subject Charlie, who I like as a manager, pinch hits for Ruiz too often too early, I concede the 9th inning maybe even the 8th once in a while. Sometimes it just makes me soooo mad,
On the other had I do like Dobbs over Mayberry in left, sacrifice a little D and speed, but Dobbs has put together a few good at bats of late, I like to see him get more chances until Raul gets back.
JRoll will get a hit tonight and maybe two.
You heard it from the shagmaster first don’t you forget it

  2. Keith Says:

    let’s go Phils!

  3. Mike Says:

Its like my friend says this division is pathetic. He is a Mets fan. The Phillies are not winning it all this year. I wish it was different but it wont be. Ibanez is hurt. Howard is a complete over paid waste. When is the last homer. Rollins has gone down the toliet. I know everyone gets mad but I think steroids has something to do with it. 30 homers…Ruiz and Feliz have come back down to earth. Lidge and Madson are horrible. Werth is streaky at best. Our pitching staff is horrible. They bring up guys like kendrick and lopez. please. it will get worse. I feel sorry for Utely. To bad we cant clone him.

  4. Bruce Says:

Shag, during recent interleague play, Coste was DH and Ruiz caught several games without a break. Plus Manuel is playing lefty-righty percentages with Bako inserted as LH hitter vs righthander Jurrjens.

  5. shag beta sigma delta Says:

yea I get the lefty righty thing, but sometimes I think Charlie over thinks that, I am just venting,
But Mike does need to pass what ever he is smoking this way,
Howard had a two run double the other night, and actually hit a single to right field the other night, I think he is working on that to maybe get them out of that dam shift which by the sucks.
And didn’t Pete Happy have 2 or three hits last night one a home run.
I am not saying that the phillies are going to win it all again, but they are still the best team in a bad division, which will get them into the playoffs and maybe they can get on a roll.

  6. Bruce Says:

Mike…so much negativity from you. In reading your gloom and doom posts, one might think the Phillies are in last place. Geez!

  7. Keith Says:

can we trade Mike and Cairo?

  8. shag beta sigma delta Says:

At least Geoff, and Dipsy, have some idea what they are talking about most of the team with some logic, I may disagree most of the time with their logic, but Mike is a closeted Mets fan sad that they will come in 4th this year in a bad division

  9. shag beta sigma delta Says:

So I think needs to dominate tonight, I think he will, but tonight if we can only score one run then he needs to shut these guys out.
Hopefully his blow up in the last game lite a fire under the guy, and moving him around in the rotation to get more starts will give him that confidence he needs.
did both the mets and marlins win today I believe they did so we do need this game bad.

  10. shag beta sigma delta Says:

pretty sparce in here tonight, hump day blues or what. Some one anyone chime in fell free

  11. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Mike you are going to say the stupid crap and bale, where are my friends at tonight, bored at work again, and that dam extra innings kept me up later than usual even with watching on DVR was close to 1 am and I had to play golf at 8:50 am this morning.
    I know I lead a rough life

  12. shag beta sigma delta Says:

man this sucks no one to talk to even in the nation this is getting to be like my life, boo hoo poor me

  13. Keith Says:

hey shag I’m here if u want to discuss the game.

  14. j reed Says:

ugh, Jurgens on the mound…I hope our low batting IQ doesn’t kill us

  15. shag beta sigma delta Says:

    Ok I will try this
I heard that they are going to trade Rollins and JA Happ for the guy from pittsburgh and move Utley to short and Play Coste at second base, and bring up Donald after the all star break

  16. Keith Says:

    poor Rollins

  17. Tracey Says:

Hey! Jimmy took four pitches before he got out! Let’s hope he can keep that up.

  18. shag beta sigma delta Says:

at least the game started on MLB.com

  19. Keith Says:

    no trading Rollins shag

  20. shag beta sigma delta Says:

yea some is here Hi tracey

  21. Tracey Says:

@Shag: I thought they already traded away Donald?

  22. Keith Says:

Coste playing second base would suck lol

  23. shag beta sigma delta Says:

yea but I got you to say something

  24. j reed Says:

    get out the defrilibulator…a bunt

  25. Tracey Says:

Since Buttermaker hasn’t been here lately, I’ll use his line: Phillies v. Braves tonight, and you know what that means… BAD NEWS for the Braves!

  26. shag beta sigma delta Says:

you are just kidding me right Tracey

  27. Keith Says:

I said something before u said that though ;)

  28. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I concur with the Leinenkugel Classic Amber, I picked up a case for $14. It was qite a deal. Looks like I am going to need a few tonight.

  29. shag beta sigma delta Says:

dam blue dot in play out(s) I hate that, lol

  30. Tracey Says:

I thought Coste was our backup catcher. What’s the deal with Bako all of the sudden?

  31. Bear Says:

I’m hungry for some Phillies runs.

  32. Bear Says:

I must be fed with some Phillies runs. Feed me with homeruns by Howard and Bako.

  33. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Thanks tracey, I have not been able to get on early recently.

  34. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Yea I asked that earlier, I guess charlie is going all lefty tonight against the right handed pitcher, giving Ruiz a break,

  35. Mike Says:

    yea what is howard batting???exactly

  36. Keith Says:

that wasn’t a fun first inning, oh well

  37. Tracey Says:

We’ve missed you, Buttermaker. If I knew you were about to arrive, I wouldn’t have stolen your thunder!

  38. Morris Buttermaker Says:

A few weeks ago, I was home sick from work and watched the original Bad News Bears. It had me so fired up. The Phillies need to get that attitude back. And tell the Yankees to shove their trophies up their asses.

  39. Keith Says:

    but we’re playing the Braves

  40. shag beta sigma delta Says:

.260 to answer you question Mike the downer, but what 22 or 21 HR and 50 something rbi. What he has done every year for the past two years,
40-50 HR 130-150 RBI and strike out 200 times, you are an idiot MIke

  41. Baseball Says:

Remember everyone you must have three outs to end an inning of baseball.

  42. shag beta sigma delta Says:

    Cole needs to throw strikes

  43. Tracey Says:

    @Mike: Howard is batting .259

  44. shag beta sigma delta Says:

baseball what are you trying to say

  45. Bear Says:

Now can Howard feed me with a homerun blast because I am hungry for Phillies runs.

  46. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Nice 14 pitch first, now lets get some run support for our friend hollywood Cole

  47. Tracey Says:

    Please feed the Bear!

  48. Brooks Says:

Last year Howard ate up the Braves pitching staff – oops, another strike out

  49. Ed R. Says:

Except the Phillies are the ones with the trophies.

  50. shag beta sigma delta Says:

one out rally started by Jayson

  51. Keith Says:

    nice walk Werth

  52. DJ Says:

I like what Werth has been doing last 16 at bats 7 walks and 5 hits!

  53. Tracey Says:

    (sigh) Bear goes hungry.

  54. Baseball Says:

Remember everyone you must use two hands to catch a pop-up to avoid the possibility that you may drop it. May I remind you of someone named Luis Castillo.

  55. Brooks Says:

It’s nice to see McCann do the o’fers – long time Philly killer

  56. j reed Says:

i guess jurgens gets the high strike but hamels doesn’t

  57. Brooks Says:

Is there a little zip tonight on Cole’s fastball? I think the radar gun displayed a 93 mph 4seam fastball -

  58. Tracey Says:

    another quick inning

  59. Bear Says:

Now Bako has the chance to feed me with a blast. Let the Phillies score like never before

  60. Tracey Says:

@Brooks: Yup, the one that the walked batter fouled off was a 93mph pitch.

  61. Tracey Says:

I have a friend who thinks Hamels looks like he belongs in a boy band, and he was definitely looking like it in that first shot of him at the plate. :D

  62. Tracey Says:

Hey! JRoll’s on base! And he got there by waiting out a pitcher!!!

  63. DJ Says:

    YEAAA Jimmy got on base!!!

  64. shag beta sigma delta Says:

It must be a holiday, Jimmy walks, now take second on the second pitch

  65. shag beta sigma delta Says:

jimmy has him worried alot of moves to first base here

  66. Tracey Says:

Whee! Jimmy steals! But really, he got lucky.

  67. shag beta sigma delta Says:

    cmon two out rally here

  68. Tracey Says:

OK, HR time for Utley. :)

  69. shag beta sigma delta Says:

lets go CHASE you are the man

  70. Tracey Says:

    Argh.

  71. shag beta sigma delta Says:

why lucky Tracey I am at work again

  72. Tracey Says:

Sorry to get your hopes up, Shag. He didn’t actually hit one, I was just hoping he would.

  73. shag beta sigma delta Says:

dam in play outs i hate that blue dot, it is suppose to say in play runs when the phillies are up to the plate

  74. Tracey Says:

    Phils left two on.

  75. Bear Says:

I was not fed by Bako

  76. shag beta sigma delta Says:

well I guess I should do some work, will not be chatting for a while just watching dots pass by the computer screen

  77. j reed Says:

come on hamels -throw em the yakker

  78. Keith Says:

    eww

  79. Tracey Says:

In the immortal words of Scooby Doo: Rut roh.

  80. shag beta sigma delta Says:

how come pitchers hit so well against the phillies

  81. Scooby Doo Says:

    Rut roh.

  82. j reed Says:

    oh cmon ump

  83. Tracey Says:

    Yikes

  84. Keith Says:

    ugh we suck lately

  85. shag beta sigma delta Says:

what the hell the blue dot when the Braves are up is suppose to say in play outs why can they not get that straight, how hard is that, Phillies blue dot No out braves blue dot in play out s

  86. Tracey Says:

Nice relay there. Shame it didn’t do any good.

  87. shag beta sigma delta Says:

god damit Cole, walk the pitcher then give up two hits to these no bodies, these guys should not be able to hit your stuff, let’s go Hollywood get this fools out

  88. Tracey Says:

I thought the blue dot just meant ball in play?

  89. Keith Says:

    ugh again

  90. Terri Says:

This team is struggling and I just don’t understand it. And Cole is having another bad game.

  91. Tracey Says:

    yuck

  92. Mike Says:

Hollywood Hamels you ARE NOT THE MAN. Keep giving up hits to the pitchers you bum. This game is OVER philly fans.

  93. shag beta sigma delta Says:

it says in play out(s) or in play no out(s) or in play runs

  94. j reed Says:

needs that curveball…the league has caught up to Hamels….two pitches will not cut it anymore

  95. Tracey Says:

Yeah, that last hit was a red ball.

  96. shag beta sigma delta Says:

    this is getting sad

  97. Keith Says:

    poor Hamels

  98. Johnny Fire Says:

Man, we suck. Time to face the music: Hamels is having an off-year. Going to be some struggles this time around.

  99. Keith Says:

    this inning sucks

  100. Keith Says:

Hames will go what five innings?

  101. shag beta sigma delta Says:

    yea an out

  102. Terri Says:

yea we will probably have to go to our BP early

  103. DJ Says:

Maybe Hamels is a #2 and we need someone like Lee as a #1! He got his money this year that always changes alot!

  104. Tracey Says:

    FINALLY!

  105. shag beta sigma delta Says:

can even get these bad hitters out with a 0-2 count, I think it is
balko, Cole can not be this bad

  106. Tracey Says:

Re the Coors Light commercial: Seriously, are there people out there who want a mood beer?

  107. Keith Says:

    can we score now?

  108. Tracey Says:

OK, now it’s time for the bats to bail Hamels out.

  109. shag beta sigma delta Says:

ok positive thoughts one bad inning, we need to score now, AND I MEAN NOW, and let come out and settle down and let the alien that took over his body leave for a while

  110. Tracey Says:

    Ryan, you’re killing me…

  111. DJ Says:

Please put Ruiz in to call this game!

  112. shag beta sigma delta Says:

can we please get a hit, stop making all these want to be pitchers out to be Cy Young or a roided up Roger Clemons,
we are better hitters than that

  113. Tracey Says:

Werth, I think I love you.

  114. Keith Says:

Werth with a walk again, what about a hit now?

  115. shag beta sigma delta Says:

i like the walks but we need a dam hit

  116. Tracey Says:

    Whee! Werth to 3rd!!!

  117. nm Says:

cole struggling could in part have something to do with bako since ruiz almost always catches hamels..wish he was catching

  118. Keith Says:

    hooray for the error

  119. Keith Says:

we gotta trade Cairo, Bako, and Mike for some nice cash.

  120. Tracey Says:

@Keith: I’m not picky; I’ll take 3rd any way I can get it!!!

  121. Keith Says:

    woo we scored

  122. Tracey Says:

Whee! Phils get a run! Courtesy of more bad Braves throwing.

  123. Tracey Says:

(sigh) Pedro used to be so good with two outs…

  124. Keith Says:

maybe next inning we can get some hits

  125. shag beta sigma delta Says:

well I guess I have to take that score a run with out a hit and Dobbs did his job and got the run in lets score more and get a dam hit

  126. shag beta sigma delta Says:

how can this want to be pitcher be no hitting this line up, it is terrible how bad these guys can look against mediocre pitchers, and look great against good ones, not one single hit. come on Offense, please play to your potential,

  127. DJ Says:

No hit through 4 but we got a run!

  128. shag beta sigma delta Says:

come on Cole will you please dominate this lousy lineup you are so much better than you have been pitching latley please show up

  129. Tracey Says:

    Oh, AWESOME DP?

  130. shag beta sigma delta Says:

that is much better is it because I said Please

  131. Keith Says:

    hooray a DP & K

  132. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Is that really his first K, he should be K’ing most of these guys at least once in three at bats, they do not have a real hitter on this team outside Larry Jones, reallly they do not, Please Cole start dominating like we all know you can, Please

  133. Tracey Says:

I hate that McCafé commercial. It is so gé

  134. Keith Says:

    Bako-Hamels-Rollins, ut oh ;)

  135. Keith Says:

Bako needs to go when Eyre comes back

  136. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Please offense for all your loyal fans Please get a hit, and maybe a run or two, I really do love all of you guys, no matter what, you all will have a special place in my heart ,please just this one time

See I am saying please hopefully that will help

  137. Keith Says:

    not with those two batters

  138. Tracey Says:

Argh. But you did your best, Shag.

  139. shag beta sigma delta Says:

I am putting money on that JRoll gets a first or second pitch hit right now

  140. Terri Says:

    5 innings and no hits.

  141. shag beta sigma delta Says:

sorry i lied I meant he would swing at the first or second pitch

  142. Georgie Says:

Oh, c’mon, I just came in and I see they are hitless, BUT they scored a run!

  143. Tracey Says:

I’m wearing my Ryan Howard t-shirt; what more do you want from me???

  144. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Yea this guy on the mound must be the second coming of Bob Gibson, how can this offense look so good, and then not even show up, is this guy really that good, I mean he is 5-6 so someone must be able to hit him,
Man I love these guys but some times it is so frustrating

  145. shag beta sigma delta Says:

good job walk a guy who is hitting 230

  146. Greg V. Says:

Jurrjens has the stuff of a great pitcher. I project him to be an ace. Needless to say, you’d think the Phillies could get A HIT off of him!

  147. Keith Says:

    ugh this inning sucks already

  148. Keith Says:

    Hamels sucks tonight

  149. shag beta sigma delta Says:

man Cole what is the matter I already told you how much I like you, and know you are good, real good as a matter of fact, can you please pitch like it just for me just get out of this inning with out any runs please

  150. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Hamels is giving up a lot of hits

  151. Terri Says:

ugh what is going on with Cole. He is suppose to be our ace. He has not pitch good since that L.A game.

  152. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Sorry Cole time for you to go please get right before you next start, where have you gone

  153. Terri Says:

    This team is falling apart.

  154. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Charlie please I know the bull pen is tired but you can not leave him out there,
he is stinking up the joint,

  155. Keith Says:

    good lord Cole sucks lately

  156. Georgie Says:

My God, what has happened to our pitchers, I can’t stand to watch anymore…

  157. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Please say pitching change when i go back to MLB.com, Cole just does not have it tonight

  158. nm Says:

so much for the braves offense supposedly “sucking”…now the bullpen is going to be overused again..great

  159. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I would go as far as to say that Hamels is not our ace

  160. shag beta sigma delta Says:

thank you, about two batters too late, but thank you

  161. Georgie Says:

It’s depressing to see the WFC play like this, I really don’t understand.

  162. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

4 innings 6 runs that is pathetic

  163. David, the Mets fan from Queens Says:

As a rival NL East fan, which team do you root against? The NL East race is so tight that it’s deleterious to root for any other divisional rival! It most certainly is going to be a very interesting second half of 2009.

  164. shag beta sigma delta Says:

the braves offense does suck, just Cole suck worse tonight, both those run scoring innings started with work

  165. Terri Says:

and it keeps getting ugly. Seriously this team suck. And now I think it is time for panic. They have been playing HORRIBLE baseball for about a month. They would be in 3 place if the NL east did not suck.

  166. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

7 runs in 4 innings for Hamels wow get your head out of your ass Cole

  167. Braves Team Says:

Hey where did Cole go. We want him back. We love hitting against him. Ace, he is not even a number three on our team. He is so so scary to hit against. He did better today then his last start. LOL

  168. David, the Mets fan from Queens Says:

    Terri,

I wonder if that’s a belief held by baseball fans everywhere – “the National League East is terrible.”

    Do you think so?

  169. shag beta sigma delta Says:

this really is totally depressing, i never thought that this team could play this bad, anyone want tickets to sunday games, I mean I have to drive 7 hours on saturday and seven hours on monday, if they are not going to care, I am not sure it is worth the drive and money, good seats

  170. Winks Tiddley Says:

They stink right now. Let’s pray for some redemption. Pitching and hitting are really weak. I hope we can get out of this soon.

  171. nm Says:

it’s seriously embarrassing that the defending world champions are playing like this…charlie – another team meeting please??

  172. Greg V. Says:

When Hamels got the hook, I gave this game the hook. What a poor excuse for baseball. I can’t watch anymore. I may not watch tomorrow.

  173. Winks Tiddley Says:

I just farted while throwing up. They are making me sick.

  174. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Oh God I am acting like one of them, hopefully they will make me eat my words and come back like they did in philly,

  175. DJ Says:

Man I can’t take this! It is horrible!

  176. Brian of CO Says:

Someone said yesterday Happ was looking like our best pitcher, followed by “are you an idiot, Cole Hamels is our ace”. Well he HAD a great year last year, and had a GREAT start against the Dodgers, other than that he has been ok. NOT Ace like. Happ has been better this year. Hamels apparently cant handle the stardom. He did great last year and playoff pretty much flying under the radar. NOW, he is completely out there touted as the “World Champions Ace”, and he cant handle it. Most people were pissed about Blanton giving up 3 runs in 5 innings. I hope people are even more peeved about Hamels giving up 6 runs in 5 innings (only credited with 4 IP because of outs. So honestly, knock of acting like Hamels is a lord and savior. He is NOT right. clearly. Its REALLY pathetic and sad when our lead off hitter gets a walk and that counts as a good day for him. Its not tonight that Cole and J-Roll havent had it. Cole was completely un hittable against the Dodgers in LA, other than that he has been OK. So can we play every game that Cole is scheduled to start in LA regardless of who we play?

  177. Charlie Manuel Says:

I know know know Jimmmmmy is going to get it right. Maybe this winter.

  178. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Kochman is the only brave with a hit,

  179. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Kochman is the only brave with a hit, i mean with out

  180. Smith Says:

You know, the Mets went 9-18 in June, and somehow they are sitting only 2 games behind us once we lose this stinker tonight. 9-18, and we didn’t bury them. Unbelievable. We should be ahead by 10 games at least right now.

I fear this is going to bite us in the ass in the end.

  181. Terri Says:

With the team playing like this and our home record I am not looking forward to the Mets coming to town.

  182. Joey from NJ Says:

Both Phillies and Mets are suck. Marlins will be on the top of NL east soon.
Phillies need a decent starting pichter. Lets go get chien- Ming Wang from Yankees. His trading price is low and will pitch well in second half.

  183. nm Says:

it’s kind of weird though for tyler walker to give up those runs because he’s pitched pretty well his last couple of innings in previous games

  184. mikeB Says:

This team is in big trouble.

  185. Brian of CO Says:

When Cole got the hook you gave the game the hook? How about when Cole gave up 6 runs by the time he way yanked in the 5th give the game the hook. This team completely lost its identity. It had the identity that if they are leading after the 7th inning, its a win, and dont count them out because they never say die and never roll over. They lost both. They all need to do some soul searching prior to sinking to .500.

  186. j reed Says:

Look there’s no mystery behind Hamels problems and I say it again, he needs more than 2 pitches. Do you think major league hitters wouldn’t adjust. And with two pitches your really limited when something goes wrong or batters won’t take. Just more evidence that this is was one poorly prepared pitching staff. DUBEE your staff is hemorrhaging.

  187. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Why are you worring about the mets the braves and marlins will be ahead of them and the phillies soon if they keep playing like this,
    Something has to give.

  188. Marc H Says:

Too many guys are looking too comfortable up there againast Phillies pitching. Time to back a few of em’ off of the plate

  189. Smith Says:

If we don’t win 2 out of 3, at least, from that depleted Mets lineup… I mean, that would just be inexcusable. The Mets are running the AA out there every day.

  190. DJ Says:

The Braves just started teeing off on Hamels after their first go around! Could it be Bako might be giving away signs and paying attention to them! You never know

  191. Brian of CO Says:

Joey from NJ, please tell me you are joking. NEVER say decent starting pitcher and Chien Ming Wang in the same sentence. SERIOUSLY in MLB he has the HIGHEST era of starting pitchers with more than 2 starts. ONLY ONCE has he given up less than 8 runs in a game, and that was against the Mutts who went 9-18 in that stretch. Can we PLEASE stop talking about Wang. He make Adam Eaton look like a cy young winner. he SUCK. 1 win. Not to mention every other start he has given up about 8 runs prior to the 4th innings.

  192. Smith Says:

Marlins and Braves are going nowhere. The Mets are going nowhere either if they don’t get healthy soon, but they are the only threat if they can actually get healthy.

The fact that we are not in first place by 10 games at least right now is a damn disgrace.

  193. shag beta sigma delta Says:

yes the phillies Cole pitched like Adam Eaton tonight, but getting no hit by this guy is much worse in my; opinion, the offense has to play way better, the starting pitching has be OK last few weeks, and the pen and no offense lost alot of those games.

  194. shag beta sigma delta Says:

this is a nine pitch at bat for ryan

  195. shag beta sigma delta Says:

I think I am going to go home and just cry, I can not believe I am going to drive all night, friday to get to phila for a 4th of July game against the mets with my guys playing with no heart or fire it is sad, I am not sick I am crying,

  196. j reed Says:

DJ: no. When your ace features two pitches you have a 50/50 chance of guessing what his pitches are. Backo is considered to be a good defensive catcher…he would be on to sign stealing.

  197. Dave M. Says:

wtf Hamels… seriously?? don’t we have a pitching coach to help out with problems like these? sheesh

  198. DJ Says:

J Reed, True But Iv’e never seen a team tag Hamels like that that quick and then as soon as Walker comes in 2 guys who never hit home runs get 1. I guess I’m just trying to figure out where it all went wrong

  199. Joey from NJ Says:

mets don”t have power lineup like before , but they have better starting pitchers and releif pitchers than Phillies. I think they will take 2 of 3 this weekend.

  200. Terri Says:

    finally a hit.

  201. Jeff Says:

Does Ryan Howard scare anybody. I realize the man can hit some long balls at times, He really does nothing 25 of 30 days a month.

  202. Andrew Says:

    this is very embarrasing tonight

    one hit?????????? ONE????????????

ok now something has to be done.

  203. ATOPTHENLEAST Says:

While the Muts suck now, I’m worried that our team is really actually healthy. Minus Raul, who are we really missing. The Muts are going to get Reyes, Beltran, Delgado back. We need to kick it into gear because they will play better when they get healthy

  204. Griffin Says:

I will just say this: the ‘08 Phillies > the ‘09 Phillies

Both teams struggled in June, but the ‘08 Phillies had a shutdown bullpen and an ace. The ‘09 Phillies have neither.

  205. Andrew Says:

Just thought I would share my current facebook status with everyone.

The Phillies have one hit in the 8th inning. ONE! Truly pathetic and embarrassing tonight. Their “ace” gave up a bunch of runs also. Maybe this will be embarrassing enough for them to resemble a major league team sometime in the near future.

  206. Keystone Says:

So does this mean that rookie JA Happ is the Phils ace now?

  207. psujoe Says:

Wou Houston Do Rollins forTejafa straight up since Tejada’s contract expires?

  208. Griffin Says:

Tejada is a crappy fielder and Ed Wade admitted that he wants to move Tejada to 1B.

Rollins heated up last July and the Phillies have to hope he does again this season.

  209. Andrew Says:

    2 hits now
    I am proud

  210. Trent (from jersey) Says:

this is rediculous man! jesus phillies….how bout u put some damn heart and passion into the game…..if we dont turn ourselves around soon were gonna be sellers rather then buyers……does anyone know of any possible trades the phillies are intrested in…cause im sure after this game the front office will wanna work quick and get something done before its to late..

  211. j reed Says:

psujoe-rumor is Houston are not sellers…they do this every year, have a couple of streaks and suddenly feel as though they’re contenders and delay the rebuilding that they need.

  212. mets fan from Flushing Says:

Phillies lost and mets won today. I am so happy . Phillies are choking now . We will sweep Phillies this weekend even with our triple A lineup

  213. Terri Says:

this game just need to end

  214. Phil Says:

This game is pathetic. I can’t watch this crap anymore. This is no longer a slump. I am worried that what we are seeing is the true face of this team. Its one thing to lose but another to not even be competitive. The whole team appears to lack drive and an overall willingness to win. Since the beginning of June we have been one of the worst teams in baseball. The mets are less then 3 games back and they are under 500. The phillies should be running away with the NL East but instead are gradually drifting out of first place in the worst division in baseball. They need to turn things around quick because I am scared thinking about what their record will be at the all star break.

  215. Andrew Says:

Heres the good news. I have Javier Vazquez in fantasy. Id say he is about 80% to throw a no hitter vs the phils tomorrow.

  216. Griffin Says:

Flushing sucks. It’s surrounded by places that are all better than it: Whitestone, Bayside, Forest Hills….

  217. David, the Mets fan from Queens Says:

I highly doubt that, Mets fan from Flushing. How many runs have the Mets mustered up against their opponents within the last three series? The numbers are discouraging, to say the least. This weekend will be a period of redemption for the Phillies. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves now!

  218. Ed R. Says:

Pretty sure giving up a three game lead in June is called baseball. Giving up a 7 game lead in September is called choking…see the difference? Now go away.

  219. shag beta sigma delta Says:

Charlie giving up, not that he shouldn’t this team showed no heart tonight, Utley went out, Howard out, what is the scoop on that, anybody know why

  220. Stuart Says:

the same thing happened last june David. and where did that get you? oh yeah forgot, no where. its amazing how pathetic mets fans are. they dont say a word when they lose every game. they win one game and are still not in first and they all come out of the wood works. cant wait for them to lose again and have them run away with their mutt tails between their legs.

  221. mikeB Says:

Maybe Hamels thinks he needs a couple of weeks stint on the DL like a few of the other Phillies got.

  222. Cheeses Priced Says:

When Diory Hernandez get a homer off your team, you know the Thillies stink. Go Braves!

  223. j reed Says:

you know fellow Phillies fans I am always hearing about heart, but heart isn’t always the issue in these dark stretches we should be familiar with by now. There are 162 games, and you can pour as much heart into every game as you want but, it won’t always save you from the Law of Averages….you can get nth well hit balls to the opposition and put your heart into every swing. That’s why they play 162 games. You beat the Law of Averages during the rough patches by playing heads-up small ball and crafty coaching.

  224. Andrew Says:

    dis·grace

    Date: 1580
    1. to humiliate by a superior showing
2: to be a source of shame to
3: to cause to lose favor or standing

  225. Trout Boy Says:

As Apollo Creed said on the beach in Rocky III …

    “It’s over. It’s all over”

  226. Andy Says:

Biggest Fluke Championship in Baseball History Your 2008 Phillies

  227. Caleb Says:

Wow, that was one of the most douchebaggish comments I’ve ever seen

  228. Badaabing Says:

Hamels knows Happ is gonna be their MAN….the jealousy is setting in.. the front office loves Happ…I must agree totally with Andy the FLUKE has been caught ….their folding like Walmart patio furniture hope Charlie doesn’t lose his job…the human gum chewing bobble head coach….I don’t care who you are thats funny….with that I”m OUTTTTTTA HEREEEEE.

  229. j reed Says:

mikeB-nope. I say it again until i am blue in the face…he’s not the type of pitcher who can still get away with 2 pitches. Actually, most mlb SP pitchers need a minium of 3. If he doesn’t get that yakker down it might be a rough year for him. It looked a better in that Orioles game, but that could also have been the cold…the air’s denser and that gives the ball more break. I think this should have been addressed in spring training but then again I’m not not suprised with Dubee at the staff helm. If he goes on the DL it should be to work on his curveball…actually Halladay was sent down to the minors at one point in his career to develop a change-up to complement his devastating sinker.

  230. j reed Says:

mike b. – sorry i think that was a toronto game, whatever game it was, it was unseasonably cold and wet.

  231. Brooks Says:

Jimmy Rollins – 0 for his last 27 at bats with 3 walks, 1 sb (tonight).

Wow, this was a barfo special tonight
