Gameday: Phillies (39-36) At Braves (37-40)

Posted by Amanda Orr, Thu, July 02, 2009 05:45 PM

Philadelphia Phillies (39-36) at Atlanta Braves (37-40)

J.A Happ (5-0, 3.33 ERA) vs. Javier Vazquez (5-7, 3.04 ERA)

Time: 7:00 p.m at Turner Field
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 90
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation

“I think today’s a good indication of what he can do and what his capabilities are,” Charlie Manuel said on Saturday after J.A Happ threw his first Major League complete game shutout.  There are now expectations from the rookie and he needs to live up to them tonight, halting the Phillies two game skid.

Happ will be opposed by Javier Vazquez who has been on a hot streak.  In his last six starts, he is 1-3, but his ERA is a minuscule 1.90.  Like Jair Jurrjens, Vazquez hasn’t received much run support.  Vazquez beat the Phillies earlier this season and the Phillies are collectively batting .184 against him in 13.2 innings this year.

Your Gameday Beer:Today’s beer is Piraat. This Belgian beer is an Amber Triple IPA – and yes, it’s all that and more. It has a full complex flavor: citrus and spices to start with a sweet finish. Don’t let the pretty orange pour fool you, this dangerously delicious brew weighs in at a hefty 10.5% alcohol. Eat a light dinner with some Dutch cheese, like Edam or Gouda, a baguette and grapes. - By Brian

Go Phillies!

  1. Miles Says:

I haven’t had this bad of a vibe about a Phils game since last season. It just looks like another game that could turn into a long night, especially with the way Vasquez is pitching. I’m gonna sit this one out.

  2. mets fan from NY Says:

Mets won today – a big come back this year. Now mets is only one games behind if Phillies lose tonight. Lets go mets this weekend.

  3. Manny Says:

This will be a tough one with Vazquez on the mound… Let’s go Phils!!!

  4. The Little Guy Says:

Calm down Mets fan, The Mets still have 3 more losses than the Phils while playing 3 more games than the Phils.

Dont get your rocks off yet..

    Lets go Phils.

  5. Tracey Says:

One pitch out. Back to our old ways, Jimmy?

  6. Tracey Says:

Wondering what he’s laughing about in the dugout…

  7. therookie300 Says:

It was a hard hit ball, it was just in the range of somebody.

  8. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Ok guys, we got a game with the Braves tonight. And that only means one thing. Bad News for the Braves!

  9. Tracey Says:

Ah… good to see you, Buttermaker!

  10. Tracey Says:

The last two games, I was wearing my Ryan Howard t-shirt, but it didn’t do us any good, so I’m wearing the NL East Champions t-shirt tonight. Let’s see if that inspires them…

  11. Morris Buttermaker Says:

NL east is just plain old pathetic.

  12. DJ Says:

    That was quick!

  13. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Hopefully the bees can attack the Phillies game tonight, and we won’t have to watch it.

  14. DJ Says:

I just wonder why everyone is scared of Vasquez, he has 5 great innings but he always has that 1 inning where a team destroys him! He doesn’t stay focused and the Phils have to jump on him when he does!

  15. Morris Buttermaker Says:

It’s not all bad, there is a pretty good Simpsons on right now.

  16. Tracey Says:

(yeah, that is a good Simpsons episode…)

  17. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Well being that the Phillies have almost been no-hit three times in the past two weeks, waiting for a pitcher to make a mistake has not been their strongpoint recently.

  18. Tracey Says:

OK, that’s a good start for Happ.

  19. Dave Says:

I move that we start referring to one pitch outs as the “Jimmy Rollins Special.”

  20. Tracey Says:

Phillies batters haven’t been very patient for a while now. Rollins’ little first pitch grounder straight to the 2nd baseman is typical.

  21. Tracey Says:

    @Dave: I like it!

  22. Dave Says:

Also, where’s mikemike? I want to know who we should trade for prospects.

  23. Phan in TN Says:

i have a nice big cup of bitterness tonight

this is the first phils braves game that is not fricken blacked out

my fricken phils better win this game

  24. DJ Says:

True. I don’t want the Phillies to have an offensive explosion just score about 5 runs. Save it for the Mets since they had 9 runs on 15 hits so they might slump now

  25. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I’ve been thinking about the variety of ways Jimmy gets out. He does not seem to foul out very much. Lots of pop-ups, ground outs, fly-outs and strike outs. But not too many foul outs. I guess that is a positive.

  26. Tracey Says:

He does manage to get out in quite a variety of ways…

  27. Tracey Says:

He also doesn’t get caught stealing much. But of course, that requires you to be on base.

  28. Morris Buttermaker Says:

If you really feel like getting yourself depressed. Look up Jimmy’s stats for this year. It is amazing how bad they really are.

  29. Tracey Says:

YAY!! Phillies get a hit before the 5th inning!!!

  30. Tracey Says:

    (too sarcastic?)

  31. Tracey Says:

(sigh) but hey, they got a hit, it’s an improvement.

  32. Morris Buttermaker Says:

The Phillies are not even comically bad. Like the Nats are comically bad. You will see absolutely incredibly bad plays when they are playing. The Nats seem to make mistakes from giving too much effort and not thinking. But the Phils just seem to play bad from a lack of effort.

  33. Tracey Says:

@Morris: Yes, at times it looks like you’re watching batting practice.

  34. Terri Says:

    oh boy

  35. Dave Says:

Jimmy Rollins sees those first-pitch hits, says to himself “That’s what I’m going to do my next at bat!”
    Sure, Jimmy, sure.

  36. David, the Mets fan from Queens Says:

I’m considering driving down to Citizen’s Bank Park tomorrow to watch my Mets battle your Phillies. The tickets available on stubhub.com are relatively inexpensive – it’s only a matter of will now. Do I have the energy to drive two and a half hours down the I-95 to watch my team play in a hostile environment?

    What do you guys suggest?

  37. Tracey Says:

    Yuck.

  38. Andrew Says:

This isnt fun. I pay for the package to watch the phillies so i somehow feel obligated here. But I wish the game wasnt on.
It was never this bad last year. Like someone said last year he had a lights out closer and ace #1 pitcher and a good leadoff hitter.

We dont have any of those now.

  39. Terri Says:

    come on Happ

  40. Tracey Says:

@Dave: I’m not sure how hostile the environment would be. I’ve always seen a lot of Mets fans at these Phillies-Mets games.

  41. Tracey Says:

WHEW!!! I didn’t think they’d get out of that without giving up a run!

  42. Tracey Says:

    Lame. Lamé!

    (I hate that commercial)

  43. Manny Says:

    Woooo Happ!

  44. Dave Says:

Good job getting out of that, Happ.

  45. Tracey Says:

    WOO HOO!!!!!

  46. Terri Says:

    Jimmy has a hit!!

  47. Manny Says:

    JIMMY HITS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  48. Tracey Says:

I’m listening to the radio, and you could hear a guy in the booth clapping!

  49. Tracey Says:

OK Shane, you have to get him home. It’s the least you can do.

  50. Tracey Says:

    Ew.

  51. uguethurbina Says:

    wtg jimmy…. awesome… woo.. yipee…. yaaawwnn…

  52. Geoff Says:

Im going to the game On Sat. I hope its not too bad. I actually have an extra ticket in case anyone is looking…

  53. Tracey Says:

Oh man… the radio just said: the Mets had trouble sleeping in their hotel room last night, because they were in the same hotel as Anthrocon!

  54. Tracey Says:

Whew! You realize, Happ has now completed 12 straight scoreless innings.

  55. Jeff Says:

vic and rollins are 7 for 72 against the braves this season. any guess what prado and blanco are???

  56. Tracey Says:

(I probably just jinxed it, but it deserves mention)

  57. Tracey Says:

(actually, at least 18 straight… he pitched 6 scoreless in his previous game…)

  58. Tracey Says:

    Whee! Howard Hits!

  59. Tracey Says:

(oops… nope, Happ gave up two runs in that game where he had 6 scoreless innings)

  60. Geoff Says:

need to keep the inning alive here if only to harrass and run Vazquezs count up

  61. Tracey Says:

(SIGH) Seriously, it’s not enough to get hits, we need to get RUNS!

  62. Tracey Says:

    Oh, that was almost bad…

  63. Andrew Says:

will we ever get Babe Diaz out?
anyone else got that feeling of impending doom?

  64. Tracey Says:

    Uh oh…

  65. Andrew Says:

I hit send right before that pitch to kotchman i swear

  66. Terri Says:

ugh, I hope our offense comes alive

  67. Tracey Says:

Hey! We got the pitcher out!

  68. Tracey Says:

So you’re saying it’s your fault, Andrew? :D

  69. Tracey Says:

OK… two runs isn’t so bad if we can get some offense going…

  70. Andrew Says:

No but I honestly cant see this team winning another game all year at this point. Happ is pitching ok but we have 0% chance to score at this point.

  71. Jeff Says:

Like I say every night. GAME OVER…Turn the station off. This team plays with no heart.

  72. Geoff Says:

whatever man…then you go turn it off…they need Raul back an they need to make a couple moves then theyll be fine again

  73. Tracey Says:

    hee hee! HAPP hits!

  74. ll Says:

HAPP!!!…agreed that once raul comes back i think the offense will start to be better

  75. Tracey Says:

    JRoll got his groove back?

  76. ll Says:

    jimmy!! jeez….this is a miracle

  77. DJ Says:

Jimmy Finally! Ok Shane lets go

  78. Terri Says:

Jimmy is hitting but now we can’t score.

  79. Tracey Says:

    (SIGH!!!)

  80. Georgie Says:

They’re going to win tonight, really, they will.

  81. Andrew Says:

well 5 hits tongiht is better than the amazing 2 hits last night

but they did score a run last night. none so far tongiht

I will only make positive comments or none at all from now on

  82. DJ Says:

I dont want to be negative but why dont they play small ball! why not bunt or steal or try some way to manufacture runs

  83. Tracey Says:

    OW!

  84. Dave Says:

well, they did manage to get his pitch count up at least.

  85. Andrew Says:

    2 runners on 1 out……
remember last year when dobbs was good?

  86. Tracey Says:

    YES!!!

  87. Andrew Says:

I hit send before dobbs hit there! i have the mojo!!!

  88. DJ Says:

Yea Dobbs! Ok foot in my mouth

  89. Tracey Says:

Their pitcher is well over 100, clearly losing it. Time to close in for the kill! Aw rats, pitching change…

  90. Manny Says:

Regardless of the outcome of the game, what a great approach by the Phils against Vazquez, being patient and making him throw lots of pitches, getting him out of the game early!

  91. Tracey Says:

    TIE GAME!!!!

  92. Dave Says:

    Steal home, Jayson.

  93. DJ Says:

    Tied! Lets go Chooch!

  94. Dave Says:

d@#$, I’m well behind the curve.

  95. j reed Says:

    no way

  96. Tracey Says:

(SIGH) Well, at least we tied it up.

  97. j reed Says:

    that was ball 4

  98. j reed Says:

that was ball 4, bad call

  99. Tracey Says:

Yeah, he chased a couple of bad pitches

  100. j reed Says:

    don’t throw a fastball

  101. mikeB Says:

Can anyone remember when Ruiz got his last hit? .240 BA and sinking.

  102. j reed Says:

tracey-yeah, but then worked the count to 3-1….the 3-2 pitch was in the same spot that the ump was calling balls and so i think Chooch had to swing to be on the safe side. I thought it was a good AB, infact the team has taken many good ABs. It refreshing to see them play smart

  103. Tracey Says:

Whew! Another scoreless inning. So Happ has given up 4 runs in his last 21 innings.

  104. Manny Says:

Leave Happ in! He’s dealing now and only has 86 pitches!

  105. DJ Says:

Sunday Ruiz went 1 for 3, Tuesday 0 for 4 and yesterday he didnt play

  106. Tracey Says:

Well, he’s batting, so they’d better keep him in!

  107. Georgie Says:

Happ is showing alot of poise out there, impressive…

  108. j reed Says:

mikeB-at least he looks a mlb hitter this year…last year, until the WS, he not only couldn’t hit, but he had one of the worst looking swings I had seen in ages. It was embarassing to watch.

  109. Tracey Says:

Rats. Well, can’t complain too much when he’s broken his dry spell.

  110. j reed Says:

    shane’s due

  111. j reed Says:

    told ya

  112. Tracey Says:

    OH YES!!! SHANE!!!

  113. DJ Says:

Good call J Reed! I was thinking it but never posted it

  114. JeffS Says:

    David,
I suggest you go to hell, or stay in NY. Same thing either way.

  115. Andrew Says:

Ruiz is fine. His hits tend to be timely and he is the catcher on the defending world series winner. Catcher is by far the most important position. Id take Ruiz over Piazza every day of the week and 2 times on sunday. I also would like to see marson in any trade for a pitcher. I believe in Ruiz.

  116. Tracey Says:

SIGH! That was a long inning for nothing

  117. Andrew Says:

this is a huge game. cmon on guys
lets get it going for the mets series

Happ is clearly our ace now

  118. j reed Says:

    nice play by ryan

  119. Terri Says:

    That was close.

  120. j reed Says:

    walk him

  121. j reed Says:

wow, this guys been killing us, Happ better not give him anything to hit

  122. Terri Says:

    happ is getting tired

  123. DJ Says:

Im watching on Gamecast and just about every Happ pitch that is called a ball is showing a strike and then when the phillies hit strikes are balls. How bad is this ump?

  124. Andrew Says:

    Lawrence cant do it. :)

  125. Manny Says:

    Another great outing by Happ!!!!

  126. DJ Says:

I think its time to pass the torch!

  127. Dave Says:

J.A. has been pitching so well as of late, it just sucks that we can’t hit. Hopefully when Ibanez returns he will be the catalyst that makes this team go on a winning streak. Here is my gripe: why does Casey Kotchman only hit homers against us? It’s ridiculous.

  128. Geoff Says:

NICE. Excellent performance from JA Happ. Hes becoming a very reliable option in the rotation. 7 IP 2 ER is very solid.

  129. Dave Says:

This ump is pretty terrible. There have been so many different strike zones recently. The umps should have a meeting and try to have a general consensus on what pitches are balls and strikes. Let’s hope the Phils can score some runs off of Gonzalez, I can’t stand his windup. I’m trying to start a blog about Philadelphia sports. It’s called Broad Street Heroes.

  130. j reed Says:

DJ- mind if i ask how much gamecast costs and do you think its worth it.

  131. Terri Says:

    Damn, Howard hit that good.

  132. j reed Says:

Dave-agreed with his wind-up and I add kevin youklis’s batting stance

  133. Dave Says:

I’ll one up you and throw in Craig Counsell’s batting stance, it has always annoyed me. Why can’t this game be in Philly?

  134. DJ Says:

J Reed its free on Espn. I live in VA so I dont ever see the games unless their playing the nationals or on National TV and it sux so everynight I follow on Gamecast

  135. j reed Says:

Dave-Good one…Let’s see how bout Nomar’s “glove ritual” before he gets into the batters box

  136. Dave Says:

I like Mayberry. Hopefully he doesn’t get sent down when Ibanez comes back next week. If you visit Broad Street Heroes please let me know what you think. Starting a blog is tough and I commend whoever started Phillies Nation. It’s really awesome.

  137. j reed Says:

DJ- thanks…i hear your pain.. I used to live in Fairfax and had to endure much of the same before I moved back to philly

  138. Dave Says:

Sorry my computer is loading really slow and I didn’t see the Nomar response. I wanna fall asleep waiting for him to come up to bat. HOLY CRAP DAMNIT I THOUGHT HE WAS SAFE!

  139. Geoff Says:

    Damn it Werth.

  140. Terri Says:

Now who told him to do that.

  141. Dave Says:

Unfortunately it was a good tag, ugh. Oh, and remember Jeff Bagwell’s stance? It looked like he was basically sitting down and relaxing in a chair when he came to the plate.

  142. DJ Says:

J Reed your welcome! I live in Woodbridge! Hey why did Werth go home?

  143. j reed Says:

bad slide-he shouldn’t have gone in head first and gone to the outside of the plate esp. with those long ass arms of his.

  144. Jeff Says:

You have to be kidding me. Thats when you know things are bad. God we could be up by so many games. The mets are just horrible.

  145. j reed Says:

oh, wild pitch. I used to work for a welder out there.

  146. ll Says:

it was pretty close though – he didnt get werth out by much

    madson, don’t disappoint!!!

  147. Geoff Says:

    BAD…..

  148. Terri Says:

    Ryan Madson sucks.

  149. boxage Says:

    really madson? really?

  150. Dave Says:

Why the hell does Matt Diaz have a three hit game?

  151. ll Says:

MADSON – WTF?? does he go through this slump every year??

  152. Jeff Says:

God Ryan Madson is aweful. What happen to him. This braves offense is much better then ours.

  153. Manny Says:

Ugh Madson….whats the deal lately??? Still a solid ERA but he’s been blowing too many games lately

  154. j reed Says:

Madson…the league has caught up with you, please a little variety in your pitch selection…

  155. Stuart Says:

Why would you take out JA and put in madson when hes been pitching this awful recently. JA did not have that high of a pitch count and was pitching solid.

  156. DJ Says:

Im officially done with Madson! You give him the shot n he crumbles! This is pathetic should have put Chan Ho in!

  157. River Says:

madson = the bridge to nowhere right now.

  158. Terri Says:

Madson was suppose to be one of our best, don’t know what happen.

  159. mets fan from NY Says:

braves always win a tie game at home . go braves

  160. Geoff Says:

They better come back to life this weekend or else its going to be red alert emergency time…

  161. ll Says:

    RYAN F-ING MADSON

  162. Dave Says:

I think Madson’s let up more homers in the last month than he did all of last season. This is ridiculous.

  163. Terri Says:

MADSON SUCK!!!!!!! We got swept by the braves, that is pretty embarrassing.

  164. DJ Says:

GD thats it! Im not watching them anymore til they start playing like WFC’s

  165. Manny Says:

Madson was amazing up until we bumped him into the closer role. He’s been horrible since then.

  166. Doug Says:

I wonder if MLB Network is really regretting making The Pen about the Phillies. Really should have just gone with Boston.

  167. Geoff Says:

freaking ridiculous…they need the all star break to be like now…they also need to stop SCREWING AROUND and start making trades

  168. DJ Says:

If its not a starter messing up the game its a reliever! I can’t blame the offense at all cus you cant score alot everyday but the pitching especially relievers who are paid millions to pitch 1 effin inning a night sometimes a week and u stink it up

  169. bm Says:

just wondering if madson goes through this kind of slump every year?? anyone know??

  170. j reed Says:

Plus his fastball doesn’t have the same movement..argh! DUBEE take a look at the Madsen’s pitch fx data because every one who plays us obvious does cause they knows what’s coming.

  171. Dave Says:

Well they do have a dramatic show seeing as how messed up ours is right now. With Boston everyone would be happy, no drama.

  172. keeg Says:

    these phils disgust me.

  173. Marc H Says:

Do you think that Madson is smart enough to realize that there is a connection between throwing fastballs in the middle of the plate and the results he’s getting?? He has to be one of the dumbest individuals to have ever worn a major league uniform

  174. Georgie Says:

yeah, DJ, I’m thinking the same thing, this is torture.

  175. MadDingers Says:

Manny thanks for the wealth of info… none of us could figure that out. Boras should of compared him to Flash Gordan not Rivera

  176. Terri Says:

This team needs a major shakeup. No reason they should have been swept by the braves. Ths phils have been making me mad for the past month. They should be 10 games up in first place. It seems like they don’t want this division.

  177. DJ Says:

Geoff- your right get rid of Moyer ( sorry guys but he is too old) trade Bako since we dont need him and Escalona! All we need is pitching and a true Ace!

  178. Andrew Says:

Babe Diaz. what a time to be facing the mets.
The good news? Marlins are idle today.
so the fightin phils are stil in first place!

  179. Stuart Says:

Charlie is driving me insane with his coaching moves. Jimmy staying at lead off, he insists on using madson all the time. Cant he just understand that if he does what he did last year it might not work. this only proves Charlie is a terrible manager. He figured something out last year cause every played amazing and now he thinks he can just leave it at that and not change anything. hes pathetic and needs to be fired. we need a manager who knows how to coach baseball.

  180. Andrew Says:

Trade Bako for a used kleenex?
Come on lets be real. Moyer and Bako have 0 value to any team at this point.

  181. Greg Says:

This is bad… a month ago for the first time in my many years of being a phils fan i said i liked the team. then this happens. these guys are a complete train wreck. getting one starting pitcher won’t fix this mess.

  182. Terri Says:

The good news is that the phils come home a play the mets, the bad news is that the have the worst home record.

  183. MadDingers Says:

Bako aint gonna get us anything

  184. Dave Says:

The Phillies really need to get some depth on the bench in addition to another starter. I agree get rid of Bako. There was no point to his signing, same with Cairo.

  185. mets fan from NY Says:

phillies will get swept by mets also

  186. Geoff Says:

The Phillies have THE worst bench Ive ever seen. Dobbs/Stairs are ok, but Coste/Bako/Bruntlett is just BRUTAL

  187. Andrew Says:

He is not a terrible manager.
The crap he pulled last year won us a title. Our second in what 120 years?
Hes a players coach. He just benched J rol for 4 games.
Something must be done. But calling Charlie a terrible manager is really un called for.
Charlie isnt making J rol not get any hits and Madsen get lit up.
Shake up please. If it meant trading an established player. so be it.

  188. bm Says:

why isnt anyone working with madson?

like someone else said, he gets ahead in the count usually 0-2 or 1-2 and then throws a fastball down the middle of the plate AND THE SAME THING OCCURS EVERY SINGLE TIME — HOMERUNS. HAS HE NOT LEARNED?????!!!!

  189. DJ Says:

Hey Im just saying get rid of them! If u have ever been close to Moyer he looks 60 not 46 or 47 he is hurting the team not helping and right now they need help! Raul will help the offense especially Howard! All they need is pitching kind of like the Mets last year

  190. MadDingers Says:

andrews right on. moyer you couldnt trade even if you did it would be for nothing and we’d eat all of his salery. Bako trade value? as much as kendrick

  191. keeg Says:

It’s a good thing the Phils went down fighting in the top of the ninth, otherwise it might have been humiliating or embarassing or something like that…

swept in Atlanta? we really really really need to have something happen to this team to get them to pick the frig up NOW.

  192. ATOPTHENLEAST Says:

Even if we play the Mets ( who stink right now) look at the pitching match ups. Livan, who has been awesome for the Mets this year, against a minor league call up. Fernando Nieve (3-1) against Moyer, who is like batting practice. Then we get to face Johan Santana, who we can never beat. Hate to say this but the Mets have the upper hand in the pitching. They could take 2/3 from this sad Phillies team.

  193. j reed Says:

Perhaps the show is making him more self-conscious but i doubt it. Look what he did in the WS. Pitching is in part about adjustments which your pitching coach needs to address when your pitcher can’t. I could go on about Dubee but I don’t have the time.

  194. Dave Says:

I still don’t understand why we use bruntlett. Replacing Jimmy with him is retarded because even though Jimmy is barely above the mendoza line, Bruntlett hasn’t been above .160 this season.

  195. Greg Says:

mets fan… you are a complete douche, are you really that much of a loser that you need to sit on a message board for another team?

  196. mikeB Says:

Well one thing is for sure, Madsen is no longer dependable pitching the eigth or ninth inning; closer, holder, whatever. Needs to go back to long relief to find himself and get it back together again.

  197. Alex Says:

why does Coste keep calling for pitches right out over the plate in crucial parts of the game?!

…oh…wait that was Ruiz back there wasn’t it?

  198. Dave Says:

considering he is a mets fan, yes he is that big of a loser

  199. DJ Says:

Andrew your right Charlie isn’t bad but if you know Madson is all shaken up dont put him in when the game is on the line! CHan Ho should have gained alot of respect with the way he has been pitching and should have made a 1 inning appearance in this one

  200. Dan Says:

This team has some serious problems. Madson can’t pitch anymore, and the team isn’t hitting. Great performance by Happ, but no offense to support him. Are we out of first place now? If we drop three to the Mets, we can forget about the postseason. The Mets have a Triple AAA lineup. Its become quite clear that this team is not the one we saw in 2008.

  201. mg52 Says:

The leading offensive player is injured; the remaining hitters have been one-dimensional; and no one in the bullpen is consistent. Not a pretty picture. I don’t know why Happ was removed. Maybe someone here has a better idea as to why, but I thought that he was pitching well, and, knowing how weak the ‘pen has been lately, could have kept pitching.
This team will get back into the swing – no pun intended – of things, but not much more time should have to pass before that occurs. The front office has to pursue actively some leads.

  202. Stuart Says:

Andrew, he should learn not to put in madson in a close game. maybe he should read some stats and realize madson is not ready to pitch right now because he is horrific. and then maybe he should put j roll in a spot where he knows how to hit. why does he insist on doing the same thing over and over again when its clearly not working. thats called bad managing. yeah the players arnt doing what they are supposed to, so then dont play them. we had brunlett in for 4 games and we won 2, j roll is back adn we get swept. maybe hes not ready to lead off for us. madson has blown multiple games for us recently, so maybe you dont put him in a tight game that we need to win.
and dont say what he pulled last year got us our world series title, because i ask you this, what did he do? have the same lineup pretty much every single game, and do the same bullpen moves every single game. he didnt do anything but let the players play well. now the players arnt doing so well so he needs to take his head out of his you know what and do something about it to get us some wins.

  203. bm Says:

the real question is where is rich dubee? madson obviously has been struggling and needs some help with pitch choices/location

  204. Stuart Says:

bm he is no where to be found along with the rest of our pitching staff. can someone work with rollins? can someone work with madson and hamels? they need to stop watching and do something about this team.

  205. DJ Says:

Fire Dubee and shake things up! They need something like that!

  206. joedad Says:

Too much talent on this team to be this bad. I expect a shakeup some time soon

  207. Dan Says:

The Phillies have allowed both the Braves and Marlins back into the Division race. We could be up by so many games because the Mets have been rotting. The entire team is playing like crap. And our bullpen? Oh man do they stink. I think we need to go out and get a new closer and maybe even a new setup man. Lidge and Madson have lost their confidence, and they may never find it again. You can guarantee walks, hits and homers when they come into pitch. They are not feared, hitters are thrilled when they are in the game.

  208. Stuart Says:

    edit
    coaching staff*

  209. bm Says:

exactly – switching up the lineup might do them some good because obviously whatever this is isnt working. i hate how charlie is just so stubborn and keeps things the same when its clearly not working

  210. Stuart Says:

I agree with you Dan. It is not only our hitting, that can be fixed easier than our pitching staff. Both of those guys are done, Lidge was never that great, just had one good year last year. He was run out of Houston the year before.

  211. Manny Says:

Wow. Some serious overreaction here. I know it’s a tough loss, but there were several things to highlight from this game: pitching by Happ was a huge positive, the offense got plenty of hits, Jimmy got TWO… A completely different loss than yesterday’s, where EVERYTHING sucked.

It felt really bad to lose this one because we ended up getting swept, but I seriously doubt that this team will keep losing all these games in the near future.

And I can’t believe all the Madson hate… He was horrible out there and he’s been inconsistent lately, but putting him in the 8th was definitely the right call. With a 2.84 ERA before this game and STILL a very respectable 3.46 after it, I can’t see how we can say that “he sucks” when he’s been probably the best bullpen piece this season.

  212. Andrew Says:

I would put rollins in the 8 hole and tell him its for the season. Regardless of if he hits or not. But is shane a bonafide major league lead off hitter?
Id demote madson AFTER tonight. It is pretty hard to say you knew before tonght 100%. Although when he came in I was skeptical. Is chan ho the new 8th inning guy? Is it romero? Oh and by the way the 9th inning guy is pretty bad lately. Is it wrong to use lidege if we are leading in the ninth tomorrow? With them winning the championship 5 months ago I feel like its tough to want to fire the old man at this point.
Now why did Werth jsut give himself up at home? Come in spkies hihg or plow the guy over. It was a pitcher for gods sake. Of all the phillies Werth frustrates me the most. Going back to that mets game where he inexplicably just held onto the ball while the winning run scored.

  213. The Dipsy Says:

Wow Dan…what a rosey forecast you have. You must be a big Chicken Little. The Phils are playing as bad as they can and they’re still in first. The Marlins don’t have what it takes. We know that. The Mets are gonna be real injured for awhile and their starting piyching is poor. Now the Braves worry. Its not just Lowe, Jurrjens, and Vasquez, Soriano and Gonzalez but you just know that they’te gonna trade for one and maybe two offensive players before the deadline. Jones, McClouth, McCann and maybe.. Halliday? Then I think they might be there with the Phils. The Braves make these trades every year. Go Phils.

    The Dipsy

  214. j reed Says:

bm: agreed. Dubee blows, when pitchers have problems he sends them to the minors….did anyone even see an ioata of improvement in Bastardo’s secondary pitches? I didn’t think he should have mastered them, but his slider hardly has any break….well okay it looks slurvery at times but even then with that kid’s arm velocity he should be throwing a hard slider…

  215. Manny Says:

I’m sure demoting a guy with a 3.XX ERA would be the best call ever, Andrew

  216. bm Says:

i like madson and generally he is a good pitcher but his problem is pitch selection. everyone knows his changeup is his best pitch and he can get strike outs with it yet he is rarely throwing it and is constantly throwing fastballs for strike 3 which is not working.

  217. Stuart Says:

Andrew we won the world series 5 months ago? had no idea the world series was in Feb. And the minute madson came in i looked up and said the game is over. he has not pitched well in weeks so yes, i was 100 percent sure before tonight that he should not have been in there.

  218. Andrew Says:

ha ha math isnt so good its 9 isnt it?

I also know everyone here wanted Madsen to take over for Lidge.
    How did that workd out?
So you want chan ho now as the set up man? I can get that in writing so when he comes in in the 8th one night we can blame you? what do you want the old man to do? Parks been good but didnt he bomb out of the rotation like 2 months ago? Romero is a lefty specialist.
So you want chan ho park to set up? Lidge has been alot worse than Madsen this year. Chan ho to close?

  219. Andrew Says:

demoating out of the set up role. not the minors
    manny

  220. Andrew Says:

Its a big mess. I do not envy the old man.
that I think everyone can agree to. Its a mess.
Even the fielding has been bad lately. Ill be back tomorrow night to discuss.

  221. Stuart Says:

Yeah i think 9, ugh so long ago right. but I think chan ho should just come in when its a tie game. my personal thought is that charlie shouldve left happ in for one more inning and then pinch hit for him in the 9th. he was pitching fine and his pitch count wasnt that high. Chan ho did bomb out of the rotation but hes been a bullpen guy and thats what hes best at this year. hes be fine coming out of the bullpen this year.

  222. j reed Says:

Bm: yeah, well that’s part Ruiz…catcher calls the game. Like I said, other teams have done there homework and it shows. Its up to us to adjust to them….one of the difficulties with repeating is re-using a previous year’s formula when everyone else has had a chance to study it, find its tendencies and a weak points to exploit.

  223. beta sigma shag Says:

I had half written manny post and lost it. I have to To say that they did look a lot better at the plate tonigt, vic got robbed once and hit the pitcher once, if they had not played bad for a month this would not be a bad loss, Happ pitched great even after the HR he did not get flustered and pitched well enough to win.
i can not believe jimmy goes 2-4 with solid contact in all at bats, hits the ball one the ground hard and people are still hating.
    Madson I have 2 things
1: I really think blowing those saves when Lidge was on the DL went to his head and he has lost all his confidence and maybe he needs to get into a game not in the 8th or when it is not high pressure, Last year he did not flinch in the playoffs or WS but he was never behind,
2: sometimes I think Ruiz and Madson over think it, Fastball inside 0-2 cause they think he going to throw the change instead of throwing the change up off the plate, The HR was not where Ruiz wanted it inside off the plate, it was dead center.
All we need is a good home stand against 3 good pitchers Even though they lost they did not play that bad tonight
One more thing is it just me or is Dobbs hitting better now that he has had more time playing,
Sorry one more thing I would agree things are not all rosey, and there needs to be some trades, but none of the starting 8 should be traded they do need pitching a starter and a pen guy

  224. j reed Says:

shag: i’m not sure about Garret Anderson’s strengths and weaknesses as a hitter but asking for a pitch inside off the plate to left handed batter a catcher better sure that their pitcher can put it under the hands or can throw a good knee buckler in the dirt otherwise its typically right where most left handers want it. The problem is esp. concerning the curve, it doesn’t really work from a right hander cause the left handed batter sees it coming across the pitchers body.. that cutter should only be thrown to a right hander cause it’ll taper away from them. Truly a bad pitch choice and I say that’s on Ruiz. Still every pitcher on this staff with the exception of Happ, Condrey has had problems or is struggling. When a staff struggles like this across the board, it seems improbable that this many players can put such crooked numbers in 3 month span. I really think something’s rotten in Denmark and it starts with the pitching coach.
