Gameday: Phillies (50-38) vs. Marlins (46-46)

Posted by Amanda Orr, Sun, July 19, 2009 12:15 PM

Philadelphia Phillies (50-38) at Florida Marlins (46-46)

J.A Happ (6-0, 2.90 ERA) vs. Andrew Miller (3-4, 4.50 ERA)

Time: 1:10 p.m at Land Shark Stadium
Weather:
Sunny, 90
TV: MYPHL 17
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Is J.A Happ the new Cole Hamels?  While Hamels may be having an off year, Happ has made himself the most reliable and consistent starter since joining the rotation.  He has pitched at least seven innings in four consecutive starts and is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in that span.  Happ has allowed eight runs in 7.1 innings against the Marlins– all in relief.  Happ will be making his first start of the second half, the perfect time to start his Rookie of the Year campaign.

Andrew Miller has been bounced from starter to reliever to disabled list.  Since returning from the disable list (oblique strain), he is 3-3 with a 4.04 ERA.  In 11 starts in that time frame, he has allowed more than three runs twice.  Miller is 0-2 with a 4.05 ERA against the Phillies throughout his career.

The Phillies look to extend their win streak by sweeping the Fish.  Hopefully the rain will hold off after a long rain delay on Friday and a postponement on Saturday.

Woodchuck Dry and DarkYour Gameday Beer – Rain City Stout
With last night’s postponement, I’d be remiss if I didn’t suggest a beer with a corny rain reference. So here you are, Rain City Stout by the Pyramid Brewery in Washington state (you may have tried their Hefeweizen). This is not a watered down beer however: it pours a tall head, has a dark color, and offers handsome flavors of coffee, caramel, molasses and even merlot. Pick one up at the ale house next to Safeco Field during your next interleague stint and have some oysters on the half-shell.  – By Brian

  1. Keith Says:

    got Bruntlett starting today

  2. Griffin Says:

    Rollins/Vic/Utley/Ibanez/Werth/Feliz/Bruntlett/Ruiz/Happ

    Bruntlett start at 1B today.

  3. Pat Gallen Says:

Bruntlett at first? I’d rather see Coste come back and play there.

  4. j reed Says:

    crud wasted triple

  5. Geoff Says:

    Whats wrong with Howard?

  6. j reed Says:

wow we’ve had a lot of miscues and bad baserunning at third base

  7. NJ Says:

2 base-running mistakes in the 1st inning… Hopefully won’t come back to bite

  8. Keith Says:

    day off

  9. Phil Says:

When your lead off man leads the game with a lead off triple he must be driven in…

  10. Phil Says:

Werth needs to lay off those high and inside fastballs. Also, what’s up with the Marlins having cool gloves? Hanley’s is the coolest in baseball and I like Paulino’s catchers mitt.

  11. NJ Says:

Werth’s swing is worrying me a bit, his bodies falling about every-which-way at the plate.

  12. Keith Says:

    oh well

  13. j reed Says:

wow bad ab by feliz…back to back walks…i’d take at least the first two pitches, maybe get a pass ball…it’s like we suddenly drop 40 IQ points when the bases are loaded

  14. NateB Says:

Rollins pisses me off. Why is he the leadoff hitter? Of all the regular starters he has the lowest OBP… and it’s much lower than Ruiz’s!

  15. NJ Says:

Happ was being groomed into the bullpen according to the Marlins commentators… Ahem, those boys really do their research don’t they…

  16. NJ Says:

Rollins got a great hit to lead-off, really went with the ball. He made a baserunning error but he’s been getting it done in the lead-off spot the past few weeks.

  17. j reed Says:

too many mojitoes for those commentators

  18. NJ Says:

you know ones our old boy Jeffy Conine…

  19. Griffin Says:

Damn, two strikes on both of the first two hitters and Happ loses them.

  20. Keith Says:

    rain delay perhaps

  21. Griffin Says:

What a shock, rain in south Florida

  22. Tracey Says:

There is a very easy way to tell if it’s going to rain: If you look at the weather map and the map says “Florida,” it’s going to rain.

  23. NJ Says:

GREAT defensive play from Happ backing up!

  24. Tracey Says:

OK, J, just get the batter out already…

  25. Tracey Says:

    Whew!

  26. Griffin Says:

Nice job by Happ. Very impressive.

  27. Pat Gallen Says:

Happ gets out of it. Nice. Still, I’d like to see J-Roll charge those balls instead of waiting back on them. He gets by on arm strength, but one day he’s going to get caught on that play.

  28. Amanda Orr Says:

Weather.com is wrong again. Raining in Florida.

  29. Tracey Says:

It’s always raining in the summer in Florida. I lived there for four years, and it rains every day, at least for a while. You get to look forward to it, because once the rain passes, the heat and humidity goes down.

  30. Tracey Says:

WHEW! Really, the Marlins are handing us this inning. Let’s not waste their generosity!

  31. NJ Says:

Happ’s a lovely looking baserunner… Looks like a skinny kid at fat camp on the bases

  32. Tracey Says:

    Oh help… that’s one way to score a run…

  33. Tracey Says:

    RAUUUUUUUUUUUUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. Keith Says:

    RAUUUUUUUUUUUUL

  35. j reed Says:

Okay, I’ll take the run but man umps need to start calling guys who don’t attempt to get out of the way….I mean Ut turned into that.

  36. Tracey Says:

@J: He didn’t turn into it particularly, but he didn’t make any effort to get out of the way when he easily could have.

  37. Tracey Says:

Jimmy: stop taking your time on those assists!

  38. Tracey Says:

    NICE catch!

  39. Tracey Says:

    WOO HOO!!!!

  40. DJ Says:

Jimmy 1 homerun away from the cycle!!!

  41. Tracey Says:

Whoa… Rollins could definitely hit for the cycle today… he’s 3/4 of the way there, and he’s already got the hardest part (the triple)

  42. NJ Says:

It’s not just the results, Jimmy’s really waiting on the ball and driving it with authority into the gaps.

  43. Keith Says:

    Rollins going for the cycle

  44. Jeff Says:

Like I said about Amanda’s article. She gave credit to benching Jimmy. Thats not it at all. Jimmy is a great hitter and he will hit. Nothing to do with him sitting. Great hitters will find there average. He will be up to 280 soon enough.

  45. j reed Says:

Why forecasters bother to predict rain in Miami from may to october is beyond me…its the tropics and from may to october it is frickin’ monsoon season. This game is not meant to be played in the rain…I wonder how many unscheleduled doubleheaders these postponed games cause or how many times players lose their day of rest to make up games…I mean early in the season spring showers and the occasional thunderstorm have always been part of baseball but this is silly…I think places that have high rainfall or in high altitudes must have domed parks. As much as i don’t like domes, i prefer to see the game’s play not constantly comprimised by factors under no one’s control.

  46. DJ Says:

    Great play by Feliz!!

  47. Pat Gallen Says:

I have a feeling that error by Feliz will be taken away. That was not an easy play. Happ is pitching very well when he needs to, he’s not losing control. Thats what I like about him.

  48. Dave Says:

Now that it looks like Stewart Cink is going to win the British Open I guess I can turn on the Phillies. From the looks of it Jimmy is 3/4 of the way to the cycle and it’s only the 4th inning?

  49. Georgie Says:

Haha, cotton candyman, he’s definitely working it.

  50. j reed Says:

    feliz pulled a buckner

  51. CT Says:

jimmy looked a little too obvious/aggressive in trying to hit that HR for the cycle

  52. j reed Says:

Phil- i just saw paulino’s mitt…yeah, its pretty cool…first basemen’s is too..It is a similar multi-colored style one, but the its light brown and black

  53. Miles Says:

Jeff, I agree that the benching probably didn’t have a lot to do with it but I think Charlie should be given credit for sticking to his guns and not moving him down in the order for the long term. Everyone and their sister was begging him to move JRoll down in the order but he stayed the course and Jimmy came around.

  54. Miles Says:

We have gotta wait on these changeups. I think I have seen about 10 swings and misses on changeups in the last 2 innings. We need to tack on….darnit Raul.

  55. Keith Says:

    Feliz having a bad day

  56. Griffin Says:

    Nightmare game for Feliz.

  57. Miles Says:

Yeah that’s not a good one. That could really cost us. Ronny “Babe Ruth” Paulino is up too.

  58. Miles Says:

Sarge commenting on Paulino’s approach with the bases juiced: “That’s just called being not smart”

    Gary Mathews, ladies and gentlemen.

  59. cn Says:

wow…happ is seriously awesome getting those 2 outs – any other pitcher in this situation would not result in good things

  60. Miles Says:

WOOOO HOOOO! Suck it Helms! J.A. IS THE MAN!

  61. Mostone Says:

Impressive to get out of that unharmed!

  62. Griffin Says:

WOW, really great job by Happ to get out of that jam.

  63. j reed Says:

    happ-o-matic!!!!

  64. CT Says:

    Happ is my hero

  65. Tracey Says:

@Miles: I hated it when Sarge uses those technical terms.

  66. Keith Says:

Happ would’ve been on the all star game if he started the season as a starter.

  67. CT Says:

Happ may not be the second coming of Steve Carlton, but dammit, he’s campaigning pretty hard to be that guy. He’s outpitched Hamels this year so far for sure.

  68. Keith Says:

    would’ve been in*

I still think he’s a darkhorse for Cy Young and definitely in the running for Rookie of the Year.

  69. j reed Says:

also ruiz is calling a good game

  70. j reed Says:

    ROY definitely

  71. CT Says:

on a related note: if it costs Happ to get Halladay, i say no thanks.

  72. Keith Says:

    7 shutout innings for Happ

  73. Tracey Says:

    Happ is a machine!

  74. NJ Says:

I love how Happ can crank it up to 93-94 but stays on the corners in the high 80s, takes a pitcher with some gumption to do that.

  75. Joe Says:

I’m sure Haliday is the cat’s pajamas and all, but what does he offer beyond these 7 inning shutouts that Jay Happ is pitching?

  76. Miles Says:

Taking nothing away from Colby Rasmus, but J.A. Happ has gotta be the rookie of the year at this point. I mean the kid is seriously unbelievable so far.

  77. Mazinman Says:

Every time Happ pitches it gets harder and harder for Amaro to be able to trade him. I’ve been all for Halladay since the rumors first started but even I am having serious doubts now. Happ has been awesome for us so far.

  78. NJ Says:

CT- Fortunately there’s been no real indication the Jays want Happ.

  79. NJ Says:

Happ’s just like a young Andy Pettitte, he’s not going to seem like he’s dominating the hitters with great stuff but he’s going to anchor the middle of the rotation for years to come just like Pettitte did.

  80. Tracey Says:

    ick

  81. Miles Says:

Wheels is such an idiot. First he says that Jeffries played for the Phillies in the late 80s and now he calls Hideo Nomo “Hideki Nomo”. How is he still allowed on TV?

  82. Miles Says:

@Joe’s earlier comment about what Halladay could do that would top 7 scoreless by Happ….his complete game 1 run effort wasn’t so bad against the Sox today. Haha. Why don’t the Jays just give him to us for free, Canadians hate baseball anyway.

  83. Miles Says:

My faith in MadDog slips further and further every time he goes out. Everything has to be difficult.

  84. Jeff Says:

Ever since they moved Madson to the closers role he has been aweful. Very strange. Before that he was on fire. Maybe its in his head.

  85. cn Says:

seriously…can madson ever have an easy 1-2-3 inning? he’s lucky pedro caught that ball

  86. NJ Says:

Come on Miles that wasn’t a terrible two outs, would have preferred Charlie left him in there, too finicky for my liking.

  87. Tracey Says:

OK… three more outs and we can start the second half with a sweep under our belts.

  88. Miles Says:

NJ its not a great two outs either. One of them was an absolute rocket that just happened to be right at Feliz AND he put two other runners on. He just seems to be hanging his change up and doesn’t have the swings and misses at his fastball that he was getting.

I read on Jayson Stark’s ESPN blog a few weeks back that Madson didn’t have a single swing and miss at his fastball while Lidge was on the DL. It’s tough to succeed without getting people to chase your fastball. That’s why my confidence in him has been shaken.

  89. NJ Says:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/gamelog?playerId=5382

Madson had that bad spell last month closing but he hasn’t given up a hit or walk in 5 of 8 games this month (before tonight)

  90. Keith Says:

we can give them Bruntlett and Cairo

  91. Miles Says:

On TV they are saying that Lidge isn’t throwing, so he probably won’t come in for the 9th. I think this shows Charlie is still wary of using him unless he feels like he has to. After a day off yesterday and with a chance to sweep a series, it seems like the perfect spot to use your closer. Last year Lidge would have been in this game, no doubt. I think we all realize things have certainly changed with Lidge, however.

  92. Chuck Says:

It’s not a save situation. Charlie’s all about roles and this clearly isn’t Lidge’s role.

  93. Andrew Says:

Lidge has NEVER been any good in a non save situation. Most closers arent. I would NEVER ever put him in in a non save situation. I also would NEVER use him more than 1 inning. No chance id EVER use for a 1.1ip save.

  94. Chuck Says:

    loaded for Stairs!!

  95. j reed Says:

Joe-Halladay is considered to have the most deadly sinkerball (92-94 mph) in the league but unlike the majority sinkerballers who are one or two pitch ponies, Halladay features a slow curveball, (90-92) cutter and change-up. So for days his sinker isn’t breaking properly he can still kill you with 3 other pitches unlike your average sinkerballer (pelfrey) who gets lit -up for 10 runs because he’s got little else to offer but batting practice…I think the sinker is the one of the best pitches but it can sure burn you, but not for Halladay. He also 6′6 and 225-30lbs.

  96. Chuck Says:

    I’ll take it.

  97. Tracey Says:

    (snicker)

  98. Tracey Says:

OK, I want to see JRoll complete the cycle with a grand slam. :D

  99. j reed Says:

miles- And Halladay was facing Jon Lester to boot

  100. Jeff Says:

I agree Ruiz is a great catcher but lets face facts he cant hit. He showed us a little hitting but he is now down to .226 Thats bad. I dont want Halladay. I want Marson up next season. I want Happ and Hamels together. Just go out and get Bedard. He is fine for this team. Drabek will be up next season.

  101. Miles Says:

@j reed- Talk about dominating stuff. Those two, along with Beckett, have the nastiest stuff in the AL. I still think Lester’s performance against us earlier this year was the most impressive start I’ve seen against us this year. We didn’t even beat ourselves, he just beat us.

  102. Chuck Says:

I actually agree Jeff. Halladay is TOO expensive. Happ CAN’T be traded and Drabek needs to be here next year. Bedard would be a good addition, quirkyness and all,….AND…..is more affordable. It’s not as sexy but I think it’s a sound move that will preserve a lot of these top prospects and give us a strong nucleus for years.

  103. The Dipsy Says:

Well, I officially love J.A. Happ now. I think he really is kinda like Andy Pettite NJ. Its funny I was thinking that early in the game. He’s like quiet death. Kinda Glavine-ish, too in the way he just throws the ball on the outside corner and its just dies there and falls off. Kinda like Tom Watson’s putt at 18 today if anyone saw that. Hmmmm…..very interesting.

    The Dipsy

  104. mikemike Says:

I cheered more last year for charlie, but wtf is he doing brunlett at first, does he have picture on charlie or something, he stinks.

  105. DJ Says:

I just heard a really impressive stat. Happ leads the majors in road era. Its 1.57! Thats is amazing!

  106. The Dipsy Says:

Chuck, I’m starting to come around to the Bedard option. If it actually is one.

    The Dipsy

  107. Jeff Says:

Think about this…Hamels, Happ, Bedard, Drabek, Blanton. Not to shabby. I want Marson behind the plate. He has shown he can hit. He is young. You could even trade Werth to bring up Taylor. I like our young guys. Halliday might choose to be traded at the end of this season. Not risking it.

  108. Miles Says:

Well one more out and we have ourselves a rain-shortened sweep. I’m searching for an adjective here….awesome, glorious, magnificent, etc.

  109. Andrew Says:

Ruiz gets clutch hits. Remember the playoffs?
I want Ruiz long term. Marson will be dealt for this very reason. The sooner the better. Before I go furthur I am not aware of Marsons status as a defensive catcher. If he can handle a staff and be better defensively than Ruiz then I say I want Marson. But I simply dont know. I do know that Ruiz plays the most important position on the defending champions. who are now comfortably up again this year. So I like the guy.

  110. mikemike Says:

comeon eyre, strike him out, he went , he went, no mayberry stinks , runs like me, dipsy nuts, dipsy nuts. pass it on, 2 outs, bring in dipsy, charlie you are a idiot let him pitch to the guy,

  111. Chuck Says:

It WAS an option awhile ago. Then he landed on the DL and I guess all that talk died off. But, he’s back in the Mariners rotation and doing well. ERA in the mid 2’s.

  112. Miles Says:

    Wow Charlie….are you serious?

  113. Andrew Says:

    lidge?
Ok I am questioning the old man here for sure.
Its a no win here. What if lidge gets hit?

  114. mikemike Says:

amazing how anyone says ruiz is clutch cause he got one clutch hit, what is his production with runners in scoring postion, and no power, time for marson,

  115. joedad Says:

Interesting pitching change. I guess he wants to get him some work and boost his confidence in a low pressure situation

  116. Andrew Says:

Maybe all the pitchers are better with Ruiz?

The Marson shit is pretty stupid on many levels.

    Piazza straight sucked remember?

  117. Jeff Says:

Why the hell is Lidge in?? Charlie has me confused. No reason to pitch him. Before you know it he will throw 30 pitches. He is doing it because he has not thrown since Frida.

  118. Chuck Says:

On the radio Larry Anderson is saying that Lidge needs some work. So this makes sense.

  119. mikemike Says:

that was a strike, comon brad strike comeon brad, warmup dipsy.

  120. Miles Says:

mikemike….I would argue that Marson has less power than Ruiz. I know he hit a bomb in his only game last year but the guy has like minus power. He will hit for average but not for power.

    SWEEP!

  121. Tracey Says:

    WOO HOO!!! PHILS SWEEP!

  122. The Dipsy Says:

If Bedard is the best option, what do you thinks gets it done?

    The Dipsy

  123. Keith Says:

    Phillies win :D

  124. Chuck Says:

Ok all you Lidge doubters (and Charlie doubters). Got the final out.

  125. Tracey Says:

Now, the Mets need to beat the Braves so we will remain 7 games ahead of second place.

  126. mikemike Says:

I KNOW THAT but he gets on he is over 300 again, perfect guy to hit second and move vic or jimmy down to 5 hole.

  127. Miles Says:

Whoever adjusts the Ashburn Award winner every day should set a timer that automatically switches the award to Happ every 5 days, cause that is pretty much what has happned of late.

  128. Chuck Says:

Not sure Dipsy. What are the Mariners needs? I would think that some combination of 3 prospects, maybe one being a top-tier, would probably do it.

  129. Miles Says:

mikemike why exactly would you move a guy up from the minors and hit him #2 in a lineup with 5 all stars in it? That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

  130. Keith Says:

    Happ for the Ashburn

  131. Chuck Says:

    What’s Happ’s line for today?

  132. j reed Says:

miles- agreed…that’s why I’d go for it with Halladay. I was really pessimistic about the possiblity and was quite a naysayer but let’s face chances are barring injury or being out batted by the Spankees the Red Sox are the next WS opponents. I doubt our bats even when hot could sustain us through seven with that rotation and bullpen. An addition like Halladay would be the equalizer….Also, I dread the thought of some one like the Dodgers with an ace like that….with their team youth all peaking together, manny, the rest of their rotation and bull pen….Also i think Lidge should develop a split finger fastball…looks like a four seamer but bottoms out much like his slider

  133. Baseballbriefs.com Says:

Baseballbriefs.com tracking back Gameday: Phillies (50-38) vs. Marlins (46-46)…

Baseballbriefs.com tracking back Gameday: Phillies (50-38) vs. Marlins (46-46)…

  134. Griffin Says:

Nice job by the Phils. The Marlins weren’t really a threat in the division, but losing this series may have opened the door for them a bit. Very impressive outing by Happ (again). Bring on the Cubbies.

  135. j reed Says:

Dipsy- i like to know what Sam Perlozzo thinks of Bedard…words is, it’s not his pitching that’s the problem, it’s him…

  136. NJ Says:

The guy the Phils will probably make a bid for if a rental is going to be added is Washburn, type B FA having a really solid year with playoff experience.

  137. Chuck Says:

Bedard’s somewhat of a headcase, but I don’t think he’s the kind of guy that’s going to mess up the clubhouse. I’m sure Perlozzo has the inside track on that with his years in Baltimore.

Now…I actually want the Mets to win tonight to keep the Philles 7GAMES up…..and the ONLY team in the NL East over .500

  138. NJ Says:

The knock on Bedard’s always been that he doesn’t have a winning attitude. Will be interesting to see what happens if the Reds are willing to part with Harang.

  139. Chuck Says:

Problem is that Bedard’s never been on a winning team. I wonder how that might change if he’s with the Phillies.

    Harang is an interesting option.

  140. ryan Says:

now is the smart time to use JA Happ as trade bait. he’s at the height of his value. much like Kyle Kendrick, he doesn’t have the good enough stuff to continue to get guys out this way. he will come back down to earth. so trade him now at the height of his value. Anybody who doesn’t want Halladay is AFRAID of glory. AFRAID of dynasty.

  141. Brooks Says:

Bedard has been pitching for 7 years in the bigs now. Only 1 year did he start over 30 games (33) and even then he did not make it to 200 innings (OK, 196).
I think its fair to assume that what you have seen from Bedard to this point is what you are in for. He peaked at 15 wins, had double digit wins only 1 other time (he won 13 in 07, probably his best year as he struck out 221 in 182 innings) when he only started 28 games.
You have to weigh all this in to your decision. He will spend time on the IR, guarenteed!

  142. JL Says:

“now is the smart time to use JA Happ as trade bait. he’s at the height of his value. much like Kyle Kendrick, he doesn’t have the good enough stuff to continue to get guys out this way. he will come back down to earth.”

Part of me keeps thinking this is the case but Happ continues to get better. Happ is NOT Kendrick though. He has much better stuff. At what point can we say he’s not going to come back down to earth because this is really how good he is.

  143. The Dipsy Says:

If the if the asking price for Halladay is prohibitive then that’s where we’ll be looking. I mean, I guess, given what’s out there, Washburn is as good as anyone. Why not? Thank god he’s a lefty so he can balance the staff out. The good thing about head cases is that they usually like money and Bedard is pitching for a contract. I think if he came over and pulled some of that crazy crap, Pedro and Chase would give him a piledriver. Meche, anyone? Cook is now out. Anyone keen on Dannys Baez?

    The Dipsy

  144. Tony Says:

Are the Phil’s waiting until Bruntlett’s ba drops below .100 before they consider releasing him? He is brutal! I think I could have a higher ba. He must have some photos of Charlie or Ruben.

  145. Brett Says:

I like Meche. I think he’d be great in pinstripes.

  146. NJ Says:

Meche has too much left on his deal, Harang would be the best fit but he’s not salary or prospect friendly. Washburn and his type B’s might appealing.

  147. The Dipsy Says:

Meche is a nice pitcher. Salary is commesurate (sp) and not out of hand. Whats up with Washburn? Having a great year.

    The Dipsy

  148. Georgie Says:

Meche was just put on the 15 day DL with back problems that keep flaring up, according to my local paper today.

  149. The Dipsy Says:

Man, there is like NO ONE out there. Washburn, Bedard, Duke, uhhh, Davis (no), Garland (no way), Harang? That makes Halladay so, almost necessary. Gotta have a solid #2 to go into the post season and there are none. So….make Hamels our 2 and Halladay the 1. I think we’re gonna end up with him unless Boston goes completely apeshit with their offer.

    The Dipsy

  150. NJ Says:

Halladay’s not moving unless his agent raises merry-hell in the next week, Riccardi not being very trade friendly.

I appreciate the value of getting a true front-line pitcher or even meeting the demands for a guy like Harang though I suspect if the Phils post-season run is cut short it will be down to greater issues than who’s pitching behind Cole.

  151. The Dipsy Says:

I don’t understand. Are you referring to the pen? I really think Halladay gets dealt. If he’s not, then Halladay and the Jays are playing a game with each other, the rules of which I don’t grasp. I truly believe that Halladay has told the Jays he wants out.

    The Dipsy

  152. NJ Says:

Halladay has been grumbling since the Jays made no real effort to extend him at a number he thought was fair, there’s a rumour he’s been very unhappy since the Jays made it know they would field offers for him. I don’t see anyway the Phils give up all of their top tier talent plus additional major-league ready talent when no-one else seems to be willing to give up anywhere near that amount. Riccardi knows he has the off-season and next trade deadline to get a deal done but he’s not exactly playing the game well or at least isn’t articulating himself well through the baseball media.

What I meant is if the Phils get knocked out of the play-offs (or if worse they don’t make them) there will be glaring issues be it blown saves, lead-off production, hitting with RISP and not the performance from the number 2 starter.

  153. The Dipsy Says:

If I were J.P., I wouldn’t be so sure that I would be around in the offseason. I think the Phils will know come the deadline if any other team is in it with them. The Jays will say that Boston has interest. Its been said that St. Louis has actually handed over their minor league rosters and told Riccardi to start circling names. I say the Phils, if they want him, should put out their best offer, the one they could do today, without the pressure of other teams, and leave it there the whole time and let him know you’re not coming up. If Riccardi has no takers and comes to the Phils at the 11th hour, you get Drabek and you didn’t bid against yourself.

    The Dipsy

  154. NJ Says:

Figure Ruben’s offers pretty good but Riccardi looks like he’s got a vulturous attitude towards the Phils. He knows no-one else can offer as good a package since few teams have the same amount of top prospects and major league ready ones and no-ones going to give guys off their roster as well as top prospects.

There’s no reason to not look at Drabek like the Sox do at Bucholz, Brown is our Maybin and the Jays want to take them both, Knapp who’s also on everyones radar and then a major league ready catcher in Marson as well… Get real JP! No-ones offering you 3 prospects in baseball prospectus’s 100 list plus a major league back-stop…

  155. The Dipsy Says:

I agree. He just might play himself. If Halladay is forcing the trade then JP can’t wait until the deadline lest he finds himself without a chair when the music stops if he doesn’t play it right. No prospects and a very pissed off Roy Halladay.

    The Dipsy

  156. Griffin Says:

The more I think about it, the more I agree with NJ, The Dipsy and others who think that Ricciardi will have to settle for a package of “good” prospects instead of the “great” prospects he’s currently asking for.

What team right now is going to offer premium young talent and has the flexibility to add payroll?

Buster Olney had a good article today about how the Jays have to trade Halladay now or else face the possibility of getting a lot less for him after this season.

It looks like Ruben isn’t giving in and if he can land Halladay for a lesser package then originally thought, he comes out the big winner.

  157. NJ Says:

All I can think is the Twins are fare more experienced in acquiring young talent in trades and look at what they got for Johan Santana who was at that point hands down the best pitcher in baseball AND they agreed to a negotiating window. Riccardi’s asking for so much it kind of seems like he doesn’t really want to trade the guy…

  158. Geoff Says:

Yeah hes painted himself into a corner. Look around all the suitors and NOBODY wants to meet the asking price. That means NO Ja Happ, no Kyle Drabek. No Mat Gamel or Alcides Escobar from Milwaukee. No Brett Wallace from St. Louis, no Brandon Wood from the Angels, etc.

Then starting tomorrow the price will come down, which favors quantity and that favors the Phillies.

  159. NJ Says:

Trying to look at it objectively I don’t know if Riccardi is backed into a corner, he was certainly on the hot-seat but I think the collapse of the Canadian dollar and injuries coupled with some decent more recent acquisitions has given him somewhat of a reprieve.

I think he can get a deal done with a team in the Central but headed by only the one major prospect. I find it hard to believe if a deal is struck with the Phils it won’t include Drabek but it’s going to certainly take some kind of middle-ground and there’s no way the Phils give up both Drabek and Knapp.

As Gammons said today Riccardi expects things to heat-up later in the week, to me he’s posturing to go into the off-season with Halladay as Jay but I don’t know how he gets a team to give him most of what he wants with Peavy sitting there and Lackey as a free agent all the while having Halladay’s camp gnawing at him.

Am really surprised Riccardi is acting like such a cool customer, I know he’s from the school of Billy Beane but at least from a PR stand-point it doesn’t look like Riccardi’s camp has been assertive with the situation if Halladay doesn’t get traded.
