Gameday: Pirates (38-48) At Phillies (46-38)

Pittsburgh Pirates (38-48) at Philadelphia Phillies (46-38)

Ross Ohlendorf (7-7, 4.63 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (5-5, 4.70 ERA)

Time: 7:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Cloudy, 81
TV: MY PHL 17
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The Phillies turned it around during this homestand, winning seven of eight.  Tonight, Cole Hamels and Ross Ohlendorf matchup.  Both have been inconsistent his season.

Hamels hopes he can get half of the run support he received in his last start; 22 runs.  That game he kept his pitch count low with 92 in seven innings.  He did not walk a batter and gave up one run on three hits.  Back-to-back great outings is important for Hamels.  He  faced the Pirates once in his career – in five innings, he allowed three runs.

Ohlendorf has also been inconsistent.  He has fared well at times, only to follow it up with a subpar performance.  He allowed five runs in his last start, which followed a seven inning shutout and a career high eight strikeouts.  If the pattern continues, Ohlendorf should be good tonight.  The Phillies don’t want that.

  1. Keith Says:

    Rauuuuuuuul returns!

Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Ibanez, Werth, Dobbs, Bako, Hamels

  2. Ed 2 Says:

$10.99 30 packs got me through college

  3. Keith Says:

perhaps Hamels should bat 8th and Bako 9th ;)

  4. cn Says:

    bako…ugh

  5. Keith Says:

    Jones HR again? hmm

  6. Terri Says:

    you got to be kidding.

  7. The Big Dipper Says:

We gotta trade Hamels; he blows and is the weakest link in the rotations (Sarcasm)

But really, whats going on with him, is he injured?

    The Big Dipper

  8. Keith Says:

    poor Hamels

  9. cn Says:

im blaming it on bako even if it’s not his fault…

oh well..at least raul is back

  10. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Why do the Phillies always end up with Head case pitchers? Is it that they are truely head cases or does being in the Phillies system and their pitching staff and maybe playing Philly make them head cases?

Just a something I had been wondering. Hamels has been the most inconsistent of his young career this year, with very little signs of getting out of this funk. I mean this is the Pirates, you shouldn’t be giving up to homers in the first inning!!!

  11. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I meant in Philly and 2 homers, my bad on the errors

  12. Keith Says:

    VP is in the stands

  13. cn Says:

seriously what is up with hamels – he got 2 easy outs then gives up a HR, double, then another HR

  14. Terri Says:

they have to get jimmy home

  15. DJ Says:

Ok they put up 3, We should have done small ball with Vic bunting over Rollins! That atleast would have been 1 run!

  16. DJ Says:

You know what is killing me, Every other team knows they will win when their ace is on the mound but we don’t know wich Hamels is showing up. This rollercoaster has to end

  17. Jeff Says:

I love you Cole baby but you are not a number 1 stopper. Bring in Roy and make Cole number 2. Give up Drabek, Marson, Taylor and bring him in. Drabek is great to AA hitters but years away. We win with Roy. Come on

  18. Tracey Says:

Joe Biden in the front row, not paying the slightest freaking bit of attention to the game…

  19. The Little Guy Says:

Bako is calling wayyyyyyyyyyyy too many fastballs.

  20. NJ Says:

Cole’s as much of a number 1 as a guy like Verlander. Problem this year is with all that tread on his tires he admitted his preparation for the season was poor and he’s paying for it now.

  21. Keith Says:

the chances of Roy getting traded are very slim, it’s just silly talk. oh well.

  22. Tracey Says:

OK Cole, seriously, you need to get your head in the game.

  23. The Little Guy Says:

    Fastball again.

  24. Tracey Says:

OK, now all you Phillies batters: You have to get Cole out of this hole.

  25. Terri Says:

Something is wrong with Halmes. This makes no sense.

  26. The Little Guy Says:

He is getting killed throwing his fastball, damn.

  27. Keith Says:

Tracey, the VP was clapping when Rollins hit a double

  28. Keeg Says:

He’s….reeeeally bad right now. 5-0 in the 2nd against the freaking PIRATES.

  29. The Little Guy Says:

Nothing is wrong with him at all.

  30. nm Says:

cole does realize he’s facing the pittsburgh pirates right??

because their offense isn’t really anything special and that’s seriously embarrassing that they’re up 5 right now. im not saying that this was going to be an definite win but i don’t think it should be this hard

  31. The Big Dipper Says:

Stop blaming Bako, if Cole doesn’t want to throw a fastball he will shake him off. Its location, he isn’t spotting the fastball and they are making him pay, this is on Cole.

    The Big Dipper

  32. Georgie Says:

    Man, this just plain sucks!

  33. The Little Guy Says:

He was getting up to 94 on his FB, theirs nothing wrong with him physically, he isn’t getting his pitches in the right locations at all.

  34. Keeg Says:

And our offense is really doing what they can to back him up too…this is gonna be bad i can tell…still 7 more innings though?

  35. Tracey Says:

    oof

  36. DJ Says:

McCutchen? Are u serious? No thats it sorry but if Cole can’t pitch unless he has a 10 run lead then the Phils are in Bigger trouble then we thought. You can’t send this Cole, Moyer and whoever the #5 is and expect to go anywhere in the playoffs

  37. Keith Says:

    Bako sucks

  38. The Little Guy Says:

Some of you guys are ridiculous, he is getting hit around sure, but i guess you have forgot what he did in the post-season last year.

  39. Tracey Says:

It’s still very early in the game, and very early in the season.

  40. DC Says:

The team isn’t happy that Coste is gone. They are a little down today. Boy, Hamels is just plain awful tonight.

  41. The Little Guy Says:

He is throwing way too many fastballs, he needs to mix it up a lot more, and hopefully the offense can help him out some…

  42. Keith Says:

Hamels doesn’t suck, he just sucks today

  43. The Little Guy Says:

Dude, their down about Coste? Really?

    Riiiighttt….

  44. DC Says:

Time to pull Hamels for Chan Ho Park. Hamels sucks big time tonight. His head is elsewhere

  45. Tracey Says:

And season-wise, we’re really in much better shape than we were last year at this time.

  46. DC Says:

    They all liked Coste…didn’t they?

  47. I hate Cole the Nancy Boy Says:

My wife who loves Werth says Cole is a one hit wonder. I think I am starting to agree with her. This is the Pirates. He is a nancy boy and to give up a two run homer to baby KFC. WOW

  48. Keith Says:

maybe Hamels will hit a dinger next inning, hey he has a better chance than Bako ;)

  49. DJ Says:

I didn’t say he sucked but he has been very inconsistent all year and thats not a #1 Im sorry! When you look at other teams #1 u basically have the feeling that team will win. Man Even the Nationals Lannan is doing better than Cole.

  50. The Little Guy Says:

DC, have you said anything that makes sense tonight?

Stop being the typical over-reactive Philly fan, whom Rollins refers to you as a “front-runner”

  51. Georgie Says:

Well, heidi’s expecting, maybe it’s affecting his concentration.

  52. Tracey Says:

OK, no runs for the Pirates this time; now it’s time to play catchup.

  53. The Big Dipper Says:

Did someone just say it was early in the season? The All Star break starts Monday… half the season is over…. stop saying it is early.

Someone followed that up by saying that the team misses Coste? They looked fine yesterday and he hasn’t caught a game in a month… some people believe the pitching staff asked for a different back-up because they didn’t like Coste behind the plate. Makes sense, why else would we go and get Bako, and their record with Coste behind the plate is horrible.

I get it, he was a fan favorite, but that doesn’t make him a clubhouse favorite and we will not miss him. His bat wasn’t good and he wasn’t a good defensive catcher. At least Bako has the defense on his side.

    The Big Dipper

  54. The Little Guy Says:

I’m sure they all liked Coste, but when he doesn’t play and is regulated to pinch hitting, they will get over it.

They had to option him to make room for Ibanez, who do you think the team would rather have? Coste or Ibanez?

Coste was decent, and a good story, but he is now like 35-36 years old, and obviously fell out of the graces for playing time. What is Coste good at? He is a mediocre catcher at best, and is struggling big time at the dish. While i liked him and thought it was cool, it’s not that big of a loss, considering they almost traded him before the season.

  55. DC Says:

Little Guy..take a chill dude. We’re all frustrated the Phils are gettin creamed. You wish I was a front runner. I’m still rooting for this team to win. I’m just shedding some light on why this team has come out so poorly tonight. Chill out man. Were allowed to be frustrated when they are losing, and excited when they are winning. Its not like I’m going to start rooting for another team. Dude…chill out.

  56. Tracey Says:

I liked Coste. I was a little surprised that they dumped Coste and kept Bako, because I haven’t been impressed by Bako. I just hope Bako justifies their faith in him.

  57. Tracey Says:

Dipper: More than half of the season is left. Yes, that’s very early. A lot can change in 85 games. Not that I want the current standings to change. :D

  58. The Little Guy Says:

They don’t need a good-offensive catcher, Bako is far and away a better defensive catcher than Coste, thats why they got rid of Coste over Bako. Honestly, has anyone ever seen Coste even try to throw out a base-stealer? He just throws from his knees like he doesn’t even care, lol, im sorry but that irks at me, especially how Ruiz goes all out to gun a base-stealer down.

  59. Rodrigo's Amigo Says:

Not knocking Bako, but why has he been starting so much over Chooch?

  60. Tracey Says:

@Little Guy: The better point, as Amigo points out, is that Ruiz is better than either of them, so why isn’t he starting more than he is?

  61. Keith Says:

    Ruiz’s neck is bothering him

  62. Tracey Says:

    Ah, thanks Keith.

  63. Tracey Says:

Nice steal, JRoll! Now we need to make that good for something other than your stats…

  64. The Little Guy Says:

My fault DC, but every good #1 pitcher gets hit around from time to time, Johan gave up 9 ER to the Yankees in 3 IP, and no one was calling for his head.

It’s baseball these type of outings happen, and while i agree that it is happening far too often this year with Cole, but look at what Beckett did last year after dominating the year before when the Red Sox beat the Rockies in the WS, he struggled mightily both pitching and injury-wise, and this year he is back to his normal self.

Cole pitched the most innings in his career last year, and it’s possible that it is affecting him this year, but he will never admit that.

  65. The Little Guy Says:

Tracey, Ruiz neck is bothering him, so Charlie gave him off last night and tonight.

  66. Keith Says:

Little Guy, Mets fans were kinda calling for Santana’s head after that game lol

  67. Rodrigo's Amigo Says:

I wasn’t aware of the neck pain. That does make a lot of sense, because it otherwise wouldn’t if Ruiz was fine. Jroll is doing his part for sure.

  68. Sandy Says:

“or stealing a few from the fridge for your underage buddies (or is that just me?)”…..Finally you admit to it! It only took you 11 years.

  69. The Little Guy Says:

Keith, we’ll thats Mets fans for you.

I for one, would love to have Johan pitching for the Fightins’

  70. The Little Guy Says:

    Keystone Light is awful, haha.

I’m much more of a Natural Light guy, coming from a 20 year old, who often goes the cheap route on beer.

  71. j reed Says:

Dipper – no, i don’t think he’s injured…I’ve said this time and time again…Hamels needs another pitch. He really throws two pitches, a 4 seamer and a wicked change-up to which the league, armed with advanced scouting and pitch f/x data has adjusted. Two pitches are fine when you have heat like Josh Johnson or Madson or a good sinker but with a 92-93 4 seamer there’s little movement and its a velocity most batters can match. So with a 50% chance of guessing fastball or change-up, batters will foul off a ton of pitches and work up his pitch counts or if his location is off and they guess right which at 50% they eventually will, this stuff happens . With another pitch at least the batters chances have gone from 50% to 33%. With a low 90’s 4 -seamer your location has to be next to perfect for a change-up to be effective. With his curveball looking better, why not use it . I don’t know if a curveball is the pitch that will work best but it still another option until you can re-establish the fastball.

  72. The Little Guy Says:

Haha, anyone see the line-up due?

Howard with a BB and SB…don’t see that very often, got a chuckle out of that one.. lol

  73. Pitcher Says:

if I was a pitcher I’d have like 6 pitches

  74. Tracey Says:

    RYAN!!!

  75. Keith Says:

    alright Howard

  76. Tracey Says:

    Ew. (Sigh) We’ll give Raul a post-DL grace period…

  77. Keith Says:

    eww

  78. Keith Says:

how long do post-DL grace periods last?

  79. The Little Guy Says:

    A week, haha.

Ibanez is such a hard-worker, im sure he’ll get things going a lot faster than most.

  80. The Big Dipper Says:

Is it me or does the amount of chew Raul has in his mouth amaze and disgust you at the same time?

Its like the size of a baseball.

    The Big Dipper

  81. Keith Says:

Broxton might miss the all star game

  82. Keith Says:

baseball players spit way too much lol

  83. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I hate when our offense makes bushleaguer pitchers look like Cy Young candidates by swinging at shit!

    We do it A LOT!!!!!

I mean NO OTHER team does what the Phillies do at the plate, and NO OTHER team is as hot/cold as the Phillies at the plate. We score 22 one day and then 3 the next. Then they make this Pirates pitcher look like he is ready to be vying for the Cy Young out there.

They are so FREAKING frustrating to watch and follow!! But of course I watch and follow them daily :)

Come on Cole get your head out of your arse and pitch like you have shown before!!

  84. Tracey Says:

damn, I thought that was out…

  85. The Little Guy Says:

Dipper, i always thought the same, but watch if he opens his mouth, its just a wad of gum, its not chew..

  86. Tracey Says:

@Jeff: it’s the unpredictability that makes it exciting! ;)

  87. The Big Dipper Says:

WTF, 7 extra base hits through 4+????? Who is out there Eaton or Hamels?

He needs to locate some f’n pitches, if we get either of the H’s he is a #2 immediately.

    The Big Dipper

  88. DJ Says:

Every hit Cole has given up has been an xtra-base hit! 4 doubles n 3 homers

  89. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Well doesn’t look like Cole’s “tweeking of his mechanics helped him too much

  90. Tracey Says:

Whether it’s chew or just gum, Dipper is right, it’s gross. But am I the only one to be amused that the Big Dipper is disgusted by somebody taking a big dip?

  91. The Big Dipper Says:

Thanks for the info Little Guy, I like Raul but I was always disgusted by the chew, its flat out nasty. Now that I know it’s gum thats cool but still how much gum is that? Its like 8 pieces of double bubble.

    The Big Dipper

  92. The Little Guy Says:

I’m watching Josh Hamilton in last years Home Run Derby on ESPN, he is unbelievable.

  93. The Little Guy Says:

    Keith, whats up with Broxton?

  94. Keith Says:

we can connect with facebook now?

  95. The Big Dipper Says:

Wow Tracey that was a great catch. I did say that it amazes me too haha.

I find it truly sad that when Sarge comes into the booth he makes the rest of the TV broadcast looks horrible. Next season can we get Franske in there for play-by-play he his head and shoulders better than Timmy Mac.

    The Big Dipper

  96. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I agree we need to go out and get a Halladay, but I know there are many out there that want to give whatever it takes, I am not interested in giving up Drabek and Taylor. After that make a combination that works for the Jays and make it happen. I think we will be sorry to give up2 of the best prospects in baseball for Halladay.

The other thought I am not too sure that Toronto would want Drabek because, even though he is lights out right now and he is looking like he will be a 1 or 2, he is still recovering from TJ surgery and may not be interested in someone with that kind of medical history

  97. Keith Says:

    Broxton’s toe is an issue

  98. Keith Says:

Bako got out again, what a surprise ;)

  99. The Little Guy Says:

i guess Keith, but what does it mean? lol

  100. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Okay I understand the dumping of Coste but I would rather have Marson than Bako. .167 hitter, he is a good defensive catcher but with that average you better be freaking Gary Carter.

  101. DJ Says:

Arturo Gatti was found dead in Brazil!

  102. Keith Says:

“MILWAUKEE (AP)—Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton(notes) likely will have to skip the All-Star game Tuesday because of an ailing big toe on his right foot.

Dodgers manager Joe Torre said the team noticed Broxton limping after giving up two runs in Friday night’s 12-8 extra innings win over the Brewers and “interrogated” him afterward.

“His mentality is, ‘I’m not going to be a wimp, I’m going to go out and gut it out,”’ Torre said. “We had a talk today about that, too. You have to be able to help your team when you do that. Even more important than that, you’ve got to make sure you don’t hurt something else adjusting to doing something a little bit different.”

Broxton is out for Saturday and Sunday’s games in Milwaukee and will be seen by a doctor. The manager said Broxton is feeling pain on the side of the foot when he plants to throw, but hopes he’ll return after the break.

Torre also told NL manager Charlie Manuel of the Phillies to be ready to line up a replacement for Broxton. Torre expects Broxton to travel to St. Louis and participate in everything but the game.

Broxton, a first-time All-Star who is 6-0 with 20 saves in 22 chances and a 3.10 ERA in 38 games, has given up five runs in his past two outings.”

  103. The Little Guy Says:

    DJ, thats a boxer right?

    Thanks Keith.

  104. Tracey Says:

Hee hee. Cole on base. Can we do something with that?

  105. Brian Michael Says:

We’re working on adding Facebook Connect to make it easier to comment. Bear with us in case anything funky happens.

  106. Keith Says:

    Hamels > Bako

  107. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    @ Keith…. that’s the truth

  108. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

well at least Jrol took 6 pitches to strike out LOL

  109. Keeg Says:

i’m not seeing any real saving grace for this game…perhaps if ohlendorf comes out? i’m not sure…but only 2 hits into the 7th…

  110. Keith Says:

Marlins are losing 3-0, at least that’s good

I have a little feeling that we’re gonna get shutout tonight.

  111. The Big Dipper Says:

Marson is not that great defensively and they do not want him to ride the bench when Ruiz is starting. He needs to develop and play everygame.

    The Big Dipper

  112. Georgie Says:

So should we click on it or not, lol?

  113. The Little Guy Says:

Nasty pitch Rollins struck out on

  114. Tracey Says:

Yeah, that’s definitely chewing gum. :)

  115. The Little Guy Says:

What you guys think about the Braves/Mets trade? Francoer for Church?

  116. Greg V. Says:

Uh yeah. Amaro? Whenever you want to get Halladay would be great!

  117. Keith Says:

hmm Hamels is starting to pitch well

  118. Brian Michael Says:

Sure, click on it…let me know what happens.

  119. Tracey Says:

Well, Hamels is looking better as the game goes along. Perhaps he should be left in a while longer?

  120. DJ Says:

Yeah the boxer and they think his wife did it! The death toll is now getting insane! Who is next?

  121. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    I’ll take a 9 pitch inning

now our heart of the order needs to be patient and make this guy pitch and tire him out.

  122. Keith Says:

    that facebook button looks nice

  123. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Mets/Braves trade they are just trying to get a new environment for each of them. Francour is definitely an upgrade as a fielder. I think its average neither are difference makers and are going to change each team dramatically

  124. Keith Says:

has anybody played MLB 2K9? is it any good?

  125. The Little Guy Says:

The Facebook thing says it’s under construction?

  126. Tracey Says:

    OH BABY!!!

  127. The Little Guy Says:

Keith, i have it, i dig it, i whoop my brothers ass in it all the time.

  128. Tracey Says:

    RAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL!!!

  129. DJ Says:

Keith- 2k9 sux! The show is so much better and more realistic

  130. Georgie Says:

Brian, it opens a window that says this site is under construction (Phillies Nation Facebook page).

  131. DJ Says:

    YO RAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  132. Keith Says:

    RAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL

  133. Keith Says:

    nice walk Werth

    woo Utley-Howard-Ibanez-Werth :D

    come on Dobbs!

  134. DJ Says:

Ok bases loaded and Dobbs please we need this!!!

  135. The Little Guy Says:

Bout time they got something stirring.

  136. Tracey Says:

Am I the only one cringing and remembering all times we left bases loaded recently?

  137. The Little Guy Says:

Be patient, just walked Werth on 4 pitches…

  138. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

can we pinch hit for Bako now before he even steps into the on deck circle

  139. Keith Says:

    k sac fly is fun

    now Bako? eww

  140. The Little Guy Says:

    Just missed that onee

  141. Tracey Says:

Whew, at least we didn’t strand them. Would have preferred a couple more runs. but…

NO! DON’T REPLACE THE PITCHER! WE JUST GOT TO KNOW HIM!

  142. DJ Says:

Should be 5-3 hahaha if they played small ball in the first!

  143. Keith Says:

    can Bako make us happy?

  144. DJ Says:

I want Bako to hit or walk to atleast turn the line up over

  145. Keith Says:

    Bako do something crazy

  146. Tracey Says:

    OH YES!!!!

OK, maybe this Bako guy isn’t hopeless… he did have a lot of hustle the other night…

  147. Keith Says:

hehe woo Bako got a hit :D

  148. DJ Says:

    Good Job Bako!

  149. DJ Says:

Lets see if Mayberry can do something!

  150. The Little Guy Says:

    Don’t doubt big Paul Bako!

    Haha.

  151. Tracey Says:

(SIGH!) Well, another inning like that gives us the lead…

  152. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

well I think Mayberry should probably go down to Lehigh he is not ready for this type of role, he needs to play daily

  153. The Little Guy Says:

    This might sound weird…

But do any of you ever think the NL will adopt a DH, like the American League?

  154. Tracey Says:

FYI: The Wilmington minor league team is doing a Joe Biden bobblehead night on 7/30.

  155. Tracey Says:

    Biden bobble:
    http://wilmington.bluerocks.milb.com/popups/promotions.jsp?sid=t426&gid=252643&year=2009

  156. Tracey Says:

Aw… I thought they were going to get that DP.

  157. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    Should of kept Hamels in,

  158. The Little Guy Says:

    I didn’t McCutchen runs like a deer.

  159. j reed Says:

did you guys think that was a strike?

  160. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

    great control Durbin

  161. The Little Guy Says:

    Come on Eyre

  162. Tracey Says:

Yeah, Hamels was really pulling things together well, and he could have gotten out just as well as Mayberry did.

  163. Keith Says:

    bye Durbin

  164. DJ Says:

Durbin threw Sanchez all balls by gamecast none of the pitches were even close

  165. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

anything on the ground needs to go home

  166. The Little Guy Says:

Umpire gave that 3-0 pitch to him

  167. Tracey Says:

(SIGH!) seriously, we should have left Hamels in. This is painful.

  168. The Little Guy Says:

    Walks kill them

  169. I hate Cole the Nancy Boy Says:

Good Job Scott. Get hurt again you bum. Just like you hollywood. Horrible pitcher you are. This team cant beat the pirates. lol. Get lives you people and leave your house.

  170. Tracey Says:

    FINALLY!!!

    OK, now it’s catch-up time.

  171. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

okay its time to stop watching this shit bad pitching and predictable calls by Manuel,

They should have kept Hamels in and let him continue his improvement.

  172. Keith Says:

We beat the Pirates yesterday . . .

  173. Tracey Says:

Um… can somebody explain to the Bud Light ad guys that “drinkability” is a real word, and doesn’t need to be explained as if it were a made-up word like farfergnugen?

  174. The Little Guy Says:

Nancy Boy is hilarious i might add.

  175. j reed Says:

little guy- did you happen to catch the highlights of McCutchen’s 3 triple night…I think it was three….at any rate I think it was his first game or week but he was all over the basepaths … he’s more cheetah than deer. I thought Crawford has fast but this guy, whoa if he learns how to hit…

  176. Tracey Says:

WOO HOO! Off to a good start, and when Jimmy starts good, that is, as Buttermaker would say, bad news for the Pirates!

  177. Tracey Says:

    ow.

  178. Keith Says:

    how unlucky

  179. The Little Guy Says:

    Damn.

    Nice play

  180. Tracey Says:

even the guy who did it didn’t believe it!

  181. Keith Says:

oo we could’ve had bases loaded

  182. Terri Says:

Shane is not having a good game.

  183. The Little Guy Says:

reed, na i didn’t catch it, but i really like this kid, remins me of Deion Sanders haha.

  184. Tracey Says:

OK, Chase needs some kind of award for most HBPs.

  185. j reed Says:

i think by the end of his career Jack Wilson will have the most web gems of any player

  186. Keith Says:

Jack Wilson will also not be a Pirate for much longer

  187. Tracey Says:

oh boy… OK, bring ‘em home, Raul!

  188. Keith Says:

    boo

  189. Tracey Says:

    argh

  190. Jack Wilson Says:

    take that Phillies fans

  191. Tracey Says:

There is a point in some versions of that Comcast commercial where Ben and Shaq are walking down the street, and they flipped the film because the words “Drug Store” are backwards on a sign!

  192. Greg V. Says:

I feel like shutting this one off. Don’t know why I haven’t yet. Now would be a perfect time for me to do just about anything else.

  193. Tracey Says:

    Go Phillies

  194. The Little Guy Says:

People that make up their name and post things on here are truly immature and aren’t too funny at all.

    Jack Wilson.

  195. Simple Jack Wilson Says:

YAAAAAAAAAY! I MADE A GREAT PLAY! YAAAAAAAAAAY!

  196. Tracey Says:

Wow, it must be one of those rare nights when the Mets are winning, because the trolls have crawled out from under their bridges. Pathetic.

  197. Ruben Amaro Jr. Says:

    I totally agree Little Guy!

  198. Keith Says:

    ugh this game sucks

  199. Tracey Says:

Be aware: one of our trolls is faking other people’s names, because I didn’t write that “Go Phillies” comment.

  200. Keith Says:

well we can still win this game, we just need like

    Werth: single
    Dobbs: double
    Bako: HBP
    Stairs: GS
    Rollins: triple
    Victorino: double
    etc

  201. Greg V. Says:

Oh my god Wheels! Can you just marry Jack Wilson and be done with it? Why is it every team we play, there’s a player Muffin is in love with?

  202. DJ Says:

Its better to Ignore Ignorance! They always leave

  203. The Little Guy Says:

Wheels is the worst, him and his fake hair.

  204. j reed Says:

by “any player” I meant since they started web gems… I think the Pirates are shoping Wilson but are apparently asking too much. And Sanchez as well as but then again who isn’t on the Pirates. Andy LaRouche looks like he could be David Wright’s brother…I think its safe to say Eyre is rusty…isn’t he retiring after this year?

  205. Greg V. Says:

It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it. Good inning Mr. Eyre!

  206. Keith Says:

Little Guy, does MLB 2K9 have a franchise mode?

  207. Tracey Says:

@Keith: Yeah, this is still salvageable. We got three runs in one inning; we can get 5 in 2.

  208. Greg V. Says:

Yeah Eyre has said this is his last year.

  209. The Little Guy Says:

    Keith…

Yeahhh, it’s pretty good i guess.

  210. The Big Dipper Says:

Do the Phillies go after Duke? We could give up less than we would have to in a Doc trade and he has been great this year.

    The Big Dipper

  211. The Little Guy Says:

    Dukes LH, I dunno..

Hamels Duke Happ Moyer all LH?

  212. The Little Guy Says:

Feliz is theeeee most frustrating hitter on the team, Jesus.

Act like your trying at the plate sometimes.

  213. Greg V. Says:

I’ve been saying that half the season Big D! Especially seeing as the Pirates seem to be having a fire sale! I think Zach Duke would come cheaper and be a good arm. And we could quit the chat about Pedro Martinez! Hamels-Duke-Blanton-Happ-Moyer is a nice rotation!

  214. Tracey Says:

(sigh!) OK, picking up 5 runs in the bottom of the 9th at the bottom of our order is going to be tough…

  215. Keith Says:

    well maybe we’ll have a fun 9th

  216. The Big Dipper Says:

The 9th will be pitchers spot then top of the order there champ.

And Bastardo was a LH and we were fine with that. Duke would be easier to get and much younger.

    The Big Dipper

  217. The Little Guy Says:

I still think the rotation needs another RH pitcher

  218. Hollywood Hamels Says:

Relax dudes. Stop getting nuts. I had a bad game. Oh man atleast I married a that girl that gets naked for peanut butter. Hey I got my money dudes. Chill.

  219. The Big Dipper Says:

Some rotations have 4 RHs and we would have 4 LHs its not a disadvantage, it could benefit us really.

    The Big Dipper

  220. Tracey Says:

    Um… yeah, actually a grand slam would tie the game … 3 + 4 = 7.

  221. Keith Says:

    u know we could’ve used Stairs instead of Mayberry . . .

  222. j reed Says:

little guy- Agreed – too many lefties…maybe I’d bend for Cliff Lee but I still think in a 5 or 7 game playoff series 4 lefties could prove problematic if not disasterous unless we were playing ourselves. How about Haren, he’s a righty? I’d like that as much as Halladay and maybe we wouldn’t have to give up as much for him as we might for Halladay

  223. Greg V. Says:

T-Mac and Wheels need to stop spanking it to Jack Wilson’s DP! Last I checked, he wasn’t a Phillie!

  224. The Big Dipper Says:

Haren would cost more than Halladay, he is literally their only good player and they do not want to lose him.

    My wish list goes
    Haren
    Halladay
    Duke
    Lee

    The Big Dipper

  225. Keith Says:

    Stairs bomb

  226. Greg V. Says:

    STAIRS 3:16!!!!!!!!!!!

  227. The Big Dipper Says:

God Damn I love Matt Stairs swing

    The Big Dipper

  228. Tracey Says:

WOO HOO!!! And that turns over the order… there’s still a chance…

  229. Keith Says:

    Haren, Halladay, Hamels, Happ, Blanton
    ^sick?

  230. j reed Says:

    thank you canada

  231. The Little Guy Says:

4 LH starters vs the Cardinals, or Dodgers in the Post season…they would have a field day, unless the Phillies plan on playing themselves, 4 LH in a 5 Man wouldn’t be beneficial, unless the other LH is a stud.

  232. Tracey Says:

    owie

  233. Terri Says:

    so close.

  234. Keith Says:

    ugh poor Victorino

  235. The Big Dipper Says:

Seriously the only good thing Canada has ever produced Matt Stairs!

Im just praying for a HHH rotation at August 1st.
Haren or Halladay, Hamels, Happ, Blanton, Moyer

    The Big Dipper

  236. The Big Dipper Says:

Duke is a stud and it would be 3 LH and a RH in the Postseason.

If teams can play and succeed with 4 RH they can do it with 4 LH.

    The Big Dipper

  237. Tracey Says:

    CHASE!!!!

  238. Keith Says:

    alright Utley!

  239. Greg V. Says:

Don’t get this far and not do it!

  240. The Big Dipper Says:

A rotation of Hamels, Duke, Blanton and Happ in the postseason or regular season would be in the top 3 in the NL.

Hamels handled the Dodgers fine last year.

    The Big Dipper

  241. Greg V. Says:

    HOWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  242. Keith Says:

    HOWARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  243. Tracey Says:

    YEE HAH!!!!! TIED GAME!!!!

  244. Terri Says:

    OMG!!!!!!!!!

  245. Tracey Says:

    RAUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL!

  246. Keith Says:

    RAUUUUUUUUUUUUL

  247. The Big Dipper Says:

    HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Who was saying he was shit before? Go F yourself.

God Damn I Love this Game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The Big Dipper

  248. j reed Says:

dipper – good point about Haren. Curious why Duke over Lee? Age or match-up issue, i.e. better to have an NL pitcher against an AL WS opponent than an AL pitcher who said opponent is familiar with…

  249. Keith Says:

    alright Feliz!

  250. Georgie Says:

    Amazing!!!!!

  251. Tracey Says:

    ohboyohboyohboyohboyohboy….

  252. Greg V. Says:

    Come on Bako!

  253. Keith Says:

    Bako can win this!

  254. Tracey Says:

Bako, if you drive the win home, I’ll never say another bad word about you…. not this year, at least… I promise!

  255. The Big Dipper Says:

    Reed –

I would prefer Duke over Lee because he will cost less and he is younger and seems to have more upside. I like Duke but can’t put him above Haren, Doc.

    The Big Dipper

  256. Tracey Says:

I want to see him walk it home. hee hee.

  257. j reed Says:

dipper- also cost, I think Duke would come a we bit cheaper than Lee

  258. DJ Says:

OMG I was on the phone away from the comp! Wow!!!! What a comeback

  259. Phils Phan Says:

    HA!!!!!!!!!

  260. Tracey Says:

YES!!! PHILS WIN!!! PHILS WIN!!! OMG, PHILS WIN!!!

  261. Keith Says:

    PHILLIES WIN! :D

    BAKO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  262. DJ Says:

    WHOOOAOAA!!!! WHAT A EFFIN COMEBACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  263. Keith Says:

okay, so I must now say Bako doesn’t suck.

  264. Terri Says:

    Seriously, best game!!!!

  265. Georgie Says:

Ok, you Bako haters, what do you have to say now?

  266. Tracey Says:

Bako for the Ashburn. He got two critical hits in this game.

  267. Greg V. Says:

    HAHA! What a comeback!

  268. Tracey Says:

Ryan Howard is a close second, but I think Bako really earned it tonight.

  269. Keith Says:

well we got the fun 9th :D

  270. j reed Says:

yabbadabbado! Hey Dipper- We posted simultaneously, I answered my own question? great win!

  271. The Big Dipper Says:

I got moderated but all you bako haters shut the F up.

OMG, I miss Coste great story, shut up. This is about winning, Bako wins it for us. Give that ugly bastard the Ashburn.

    The Big Dipper

  272. The Little Guy Says:

Are the Phils still down about the loss of Coste? Hahahahaha.

  273. Keith Says:

Bako for the Ashburn I agree

  274. The Little Guy Says:

    Howard should get the Ashburn.

3 for 3, 3 run homer to tie it, 2 singles, 2 BB, SB

  275. Keith Says:

Cain might miss the all star game too (got hit in the arm)

  276. Tracey Says:

(on a completely unrelated note… can somebody please tell those protestors that Jim Crow *DOESN’T* swim at that swim club, and that’s the problem…)

  277. DJ Says:

Where is the person that bet their Dad a 12 pack that the phillies wouldn’t score 22 runs the next 6 games after the 22 to 1 beat down! Thats 24 or 25 in 5! Sorry you owe him now

  278. Keith Says:

yea nvm Howard should get it

  279. Greg V. Says:

    BAKO FOR PRESIDENT!

  280. Tracey Says:

FYI: Manuel is being interviewed on Comcast Sportsnet.

  281. Greg V. Says:

Bako for Ashburn! Howard’s homer was great but Bako got it done!

  282. DJ Says:

Littlg Guy had a point and especially since Bako wouldn’t have had the chance without Howards heroics! And Now that I think about it Howard deserves it cus Madson robbed him from the Orioles series!

  283. Tracey Says:

Bako got it done twice: he also had an important RBI in the 6th.

  284. DJ Says:

    *has not had

  285. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

Bako had a good game, but even a blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then. Bako still sux overall

Good comeback win, we needed it.

  286. The Little Guy Says:

Howard hit a 470 Foot bomb to tie the game, he gets it

  287. Grrumpy Miner Says:

Well georgie girl…that was an impressive comeback for youse guys,as for Bako….I enjoy my crow with 4 day old Alfredo sauce at room temperture.DAMN IT! When will youse guys lose? lol

  288. DJ Says:

Howard since he was robbed a couple of weeks ago! That Home run is a momentum swinger Bako was just in the right place at the right time! A 3 run dinger to tie is more impressive then a walk off single with the bases loaded

  289. Keith Says:

    Marlins still losing?

  290. DJ Says:

    Yea 5 to 1

  291. The Little Guy Says:

Marlins are about to fall 6 losses behind the 1st place Phils.

  292. Griffin Says:

Awesome, awesome win. As someone on this blog (sorry, I forget who) said “good teams lose a game like this, great teams win”

Let’s get them tomorrow and go into the break 10 above .500

  293. j reed Says:

I’m pretty new to this discussion board so I was wondering, can the Ashburn be shared, and if so, why not Bako and Howard for the Ashburn?

  294. DJ Says:

I have never seen it shared but I just started this year! Been out the country!

  295. j reed Says:

Good, the further away the Fish and their rotation are the better I feel.

  296. joedad Says:

Fantastic win. I’m glad I paused the movie and flipped it back on. Big time cheering at the dad household!

  297. Tracey Says:

Marlins just lost. Phils are now 4 games up.

  298. Tracey Says:

We’ve got a 4-game series against the Marlins right after the All-Star Break.

  299. Tracey Says:

Wow… we got really lucky tonight: the rain hit HARD after the game ended. A little earlier, and the Pirates would have won in a rain-out.

  300. Keith Says:

    Phillies :)

  301. phillyjoe Says:

we can really jump out in the division if we can beat up on the marlins next week

  302. Keith Says:

VP should go to every game ;)

  303. Psujoe Says:

4 games up with 4 games in hand. We can turn the Marlins from buyers into sellers if we win that series! First things first, let’s complete the sweep!

  304. Psujoe Says:

Sounds like if Pedro passes the physical this week he’s a Philly. Rosenthal says the number is shockingly low and Pedro would be ready by 8/1/09.

  305. Pirates » Current News Trends Says:
