Historical Win for Moyer
Posted by Amanda Orr, Sat, July 04, 2009 08:08 PM
Having a record of 99-99 on Independence Day, the Phillies hoped number one-hundred would be in the win column. But the bigger numbers came from Jamie Moyer who was making his 600th career start.
With the Phillies 4-1 win over the Mets, Moyer tied Carl Hubbell for 42nd on the all time wins list with 253 wins. He also moved into the top ten among left-handed pitchers.
Moyer pitched 6.1 innings allowing only one earned run on five hits and one walk.
Jimmy Rollins hit a two run double giving the Phillies a three run lead.
Paul Bako and Shane Victorino received new life after David Wright and Omir Santos misplayed fly balls in foul territory. Victorino singled giving the Phillies a 4-1 lead.
The bullpen did not allow a run and Brad Lidge got an easy 1-2-3 save to secure the win for Moyer.

Good job Jamie. I definitely support you out there! Here’s to the Mutts fans who said “Old man Moyer won’t hold up” (mets fan, 2009). OOOOOOPSY
July 4th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
I always have faith in the Mighty Moyer!
July 4th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
I understand you really do not like Met fans M.P. ,but you talk about them a lot for not liking them around. You always engage in convos.
I may not understand though because when people say why don’t you back a philly fan I say well I know many philly fans who are dumb and I dont like.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Was there today. Great game today. Trade Roll played well and looked like himself. Moyer looked like he did last year – and was good enough to get another win.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
p.s. If i could edit my punctuation I would.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
phillsmorephills – I try and give the benefit to everyone. That being said, I back intelligence. Grrrrrumpy Miner, a dedicated Mets fan, is a good guy as are a few of those fans. Why I talk about them a lot and engage them is because if we engage, the trolls think twice. By the same token, if a Phillies Phan comes on here and says something dumb, I will call them out so the trolls don’t get ammunition. My goal on here is simple: good phans, good conversation and GO PHILLIES. The perfect Phillies Nation is the Phillies Phans backing the team they have, and discussing logical improvements, not wanting to sell the team because we are slumping. Likewise, the Met fans claiming victory when 4 teams are in the race.
Hope that sums me up. I am a die hard Phillies Phan and all I want is logical conversation. I respect hard working people and tough players.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
Today’s was a very nice game. It was even nicer to be at the ballpark. Lidge looked about as strong as he’s looked all seasons, and Moyer was in good form.
One item – I’m confused as to how the Phils could be 99-99 on Independence Day.
We have not been playing baseball for 198 years. I also doubt we played doubleheaders on the 4th in 71 of our 127 seasons.
Am I missing something here?
July 4th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
andersog – excellent point, perhaps we are 63-63?
Hmmmm Baseball started in 1846 roughly and the Phillies in 1883; so no one could be 99-99 as that would be 1811…
Good catch.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
andersog, I heard the stat on the radio prior to the game.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
99-27 perhaps; Now I need to go figure this out. I am curious
July 4th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
I’ve not researched this, but there’s the possibility of doubleheaders. However, I don’t think it would account for 198 games. Nice win today, let’s keep this going.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:26 pm
I smell a sweep tomorrow against the weakened Santana, fellow Phillie fans. Tip of the cap to Moyer and a well deserved Ashburn today. Hope Joe the Pummeler can keep the ball in the yard tomorrow… I’m optimistic considering the Mets are a AAA squad right now…
GO PHILLIES!
July 4th, 2009 at 11:27 pm
Howard – another excellent possibility. I found the only way to do this is baseball-reference, but I have to go back in year by year. I may do it tomorrow and hope someone else has a lot of time on their hand LOL
July 4th, 2009 at 11:32 pm
I am working on it now, year by year by year
July 4th, 2009 at 11:35 pm
We have won every year since 2004 though; lost to the Fish in 2003. Oh hum, 120 more to go
July 4th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
Wow what an outing for Moyer….great job…ok 2 in a row….could use at least a 7 out the next 10 would be nice ……great site for Philly fans…like I’ll back….
July 4th, 2009 at 11:48 pm
Last person to beat the Mets on July 4: Steve Carlton. Moyer keeps good company
July 4th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
I hate to repeat this everytime Moyer wins a game but how many of these outing does he need to have before Geoff, Jeff, and others finally admit that Jamie still belongs in our rotation. The Moyer haters need to run and hide because he is finally pitching like a #3-4 again.
And don’t give me the “he pitched against a weak offense” s**t because we just got our asses handed to us by an Atlanta team that can’t hit at all. And that included starts by Cole and Blanton. Great win. GO PHILS BABY, let’s get the sweep.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
Miles – good point and it backs the one about the negativity I have been complaining about. I won’t claim victory, but we are far from out of the NL East – WITH Jamie.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:04 am
39-26 through 1957. LOTS of doubleheaders, so I am thinking 99-99 may be accurate. Still working on this.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:12 am
He HAS been better LATELY. I enjoyed it today, he was good. Better than I had seen him all year. Hey, if he can keep this up thats great.
The thing is with his contract he could suck you know whats and still be kept in the rotation at least all the way through this season.
July 5th, 2009 at 12:18 am
Geoff – that is nice of you to say. I know we disagree on things sometimes, but I defended you today…
July 5th, 2009 at 12:20 am
61-55 since 1931; still going
July 5th, 2009 at 12:43 am
We are indeed 100-99. Apparently it was customary to have doubleheaders until 1953, except in years of war, where July 4 was an off day. I am tired. Amanda, you heard right!
July 5th, 2009 at 12:54 am
This was a solid win. This is how the games are supposed to be played. Get out to an early lead, capitalize on the other team’s mistakes, and once you have the lead, keep it. Great game all around.
July 5th, 2009 at 1:47 am
i’m sorry….i like this blog….but i cant justify taking my time to post opinions here when the topics are written by some chick named Amanda.
Is she a ball girl?… whats the deal here….
July 5th, 2009 at 2:45 am
who is Amanda?
July 5th, 2009 at 2:56 am
Not cool, Maverick. Don’t hate on a piece just because it’s written by a girl. Amanda, keep writing and don’t listen to the haters.
Keith, I think Amanda had her own blog before coming here. The name escapes me – I had it bookmarked, but that bookmark is on the computer that won’t turn on. Then earlier this year, Amanda came over to PN. Now that Tim’s gone, there’s more room for her to post.
July 5th, 2009 at 6:34 am
@MP regarding trolls: Engaging them does not make them think twice. Engaging them makes them pee their pants with delight, because the primary objective of a troll is to get attention, and when you engage them, you give them exactly what they want. There is nothing that makes a troll happier than to disrupt an entire chat, get everybody talking about the troll instead of about whatever the purpose of the chat is.
Many years ago, I was in a perfectly nice chat and a troll came in. Everybody harassed the troll, vicious attacks, but nothing seemed to discourage the troll. Then somebody new entered the chat. “What are we talking about tonight?” the new person asked. The troll gleefully replied, “ME!!!!!” That’s what it’s all about. You’ve heard “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”? For a troll, there’s no such thing as bad attention. Doesn’t matter if you’re right; doesn’t matter if you prove that they are wrong, that they are idiots, because you’re talking about them instead of about Phillies baseball, and that’s what they want.
If everybody ignores them, they will go away. But getting everybody to do that is a challenge.
Maverick, by the way, is a troll, and there is really no point in defending Amanda, because we all know better, and he’s not coming back here to read your comments. He just smacked a hornet’s nest with a stick and ran away.
July 5th, 2009 at 7:26 am
Amanda keep up the good work. Maverick is a guy I know from school, he just hates women, In high school he got shot down a lot. I think the word people used for him would be geek.
July 5th, 2009 at 9:24 am
MP,
Tracey is absolutely right with regards to trolls – their prime (and often only) objective is attention of any kind. The only thing that eliminates them is to completely ignore them, as hard as that might be. They’ll get bored and move on.
I’ll compare it loosely to booing guys like T.O. when they come in here. I’ve never understood the point of that when all a creep like that craves is attention. You can see him light up as soon as the boos start.
When will everyone get it that just totally ignoring guys like T.O. and Deion Sanders is the perfect way to abuse them? Guys like that freaking LIVE for that kind of attention, and would be miserable if they were simply ignored.
Use boos and abuse when it helps our guys. Best ever example of that was when the fans literally melted down Burt Hooton in the 1977NLCS. The game turned out to be my all-time Phillies nightmare, but the fans sure as hell did their job.
July 5th, 2009 at 9:31 am
Wow Maverick is as bad as a mets fan.
July 5th, 2009 at 10:14 am
To author, Amandor Orr:
The Phillies have not been playing for 198 years…how can they POSSIBLY be 99-99 on Independence Day? That would mean the Phillies have been playing baseball since 1811? Weren’t we still fighting the British back then?
July 5th, 2009 at 10:20 am
Jeez, some of you guys are real a-holes, aren’t you?
July 5th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Well my boys did supposedly invent the sport, another game we ‘created’ and can’t play worth a shit…
July 5th, 2009 at 10:36 am
Tracey/mjkvol – The larger issue was what he said about me not defending phillies phans. I see what you mean about the trolls, but it is tupidity I hate more than anything. I do appreciate your comments…
Maverick has always been a troll, I know…
July 5th, 2009 at 10:38 am
CLIFF READ MY POST – I SPENT A FREAKING HOUR VERIFYING THE INFO SHE RECEIVED: SHE DID NOT MAKE IT UP SHE GOT IT FRMO THE RAIO. Yes I am yelling:
We are indeed 100-99. Apparently it was customary to have doubleheaders until 1953, except in years of war, where July 4 was an off day. I am tired. Amanda, you heard right!
July 5th, 2009 at 10:38 am
And for the record, I think Amanda is doing a hell of a good job.
July 5th, 2009 at 10:43 am
If anyone wants my spreadsheet ask, and I will SHOW you we are 100-99. Took me an hour to do that crap and I had to sit and go year by year by year on the 4th of JULY.
Also, I offered to pay for a server upgrade at PN to require logins, but no response. I had the money to donate, but if they don’t want them, then I will deal with trolls.
July 5th, 2009 at 10:44 am
Agreed, M.P., I guess we have to realize that some guys have not yet graduated from cave-dwelling.
July 5th, 2009 at 10:52 am
Georgie – yeah, sadly. I wonder how many of them are really Mets fans and how many are other fans trying to spark us up? I have to learn to ignore. I hate stupidity though, that is my only problem – I don’t mean like spelling or typos, I make tons of those, but those who say things without thinking.
July 5th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Maverick, don’t take your time to write here then. We don’t care. Your comments make you sound like an ass anyway.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:22 am
I want the spreadsheet.
Just kiddin. That’s a pretty good nugget of fact that came out of all that research though. I never knew about the tradition of July 4 double-headers or that there were no July 4 games in war years.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:23 am
Sorry haven’t been here the last 2 days, busy celebrating the Fourth of July weekend (yes even I have a life too! lol).I still am hearing the slide whistle where David Wright had the ball fall behind him,and when Omir Santos screwed that catch up,I heard “BOOOOOIIIIIIIIIING!”I just love when teams give other teams “Extra Outs”.J-Roll is waking up and Moyer did pitch a quality game yesterday as the bullpen is starting to show signs of life. Its hard for the Amazins to win a game without using fundamentals and kills you if 3 of the top 4 of your batting line-up is on the shelf.Today Cy Johan needs to pitch a quality game and shut down the Phillies,or else 4 games back. With all this,I am not giving up on my Amazins season for one reason….The Phils have shown that its never over until the last day and the bitter end.LETS GO METS!
July 5th, 2009 at 11:38 am
That is why I like you Grrrumpy – fair as always.
Papa Thompson – I was skeptical too, not of Amanda, but of the info she heard. I am ASSUMING that they didn’t do it in war years because in 1916-1917 (I think) and 1941-1943 no 4th of July games were played by the Phillies. Most other years though until 1953 were all doubleheaders. That is what I miss about baseball – doubleheaders. NOT the split doubleheaders, but the one ticket-two game ones.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:42 am

The first column is the year, second and third is the W-L column. It says 97, but there were two losses I forgot to add, so it is 100-99.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:52 am
MP I give you mad props for researching that. I should be the one double checking that. Good work. Kudos.
July 5th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Amanda, I am happy to verify any info first, will e-mail you all my contact info. You are fine though, I think you are doing a great job as I said earlier. That was more directed at the info you heard, not at you. Wherever you heard it, that is reliable!
July 5th, 2009 at 1:04 pm
Keep up the good work Amanda. You wouldn’t happen to be Amanda or from deercamponline.com would you?
July 5th, 2009 at 1:31 pm
Thanks MP. psujoe, I’m not from that website. my other site is swingandalongdrive.com
