Lopez To Start Friday

Posted by Amanda Orr, Wed, July 01, 2009 03:48 PM

For a few days it looked like Carlos Carrasco would make his Major League debut.  However, that is not the case.  Rodrigo Lopez will start on Friday against the New York Mets.

Lopez is 65-65 with a 4.80 ERA and 1.40 WHIP in his Major League career.  In 2007, he had Tommy John Surgery and spent most of the 2008 season recovering.  The Phillies signed Lopez to a minor league deal after spring training.  In 13 starts with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, Lopez is 5-4 with a 3.91 ERA and opponents are batting .292 against him.

  1. Michael Stubel Says:

Really disappointed it’s not Carrasco. This team needs a win tonight.

  2. Michael N. Says:

jeez i would have prefer Kendrick…

  3. Miles Says:

Lopez is probably the better choice, honestly. He has made a couple nice starts in a row if I’m not mistaken. Throwing Carrasco out there against our rivals at CBP, where we have had an almost impossible lack of success, is probably not the start to break this guy in. We are gonna need a win on Friday, however, so Lopez will have to keep us in it.

  4. TBT Says:

Makes sense inasmuch as the Metropolitans are fielding a Triple A line-up.

  5. Ed R. Says:

Well this is the boring move, not the sexy move we thought it would be but I guess this makes sense. I guess maybe the Phillies don’t want to rush Carassco or don’t think he is ready yet. I guess they could have done worse.

  6. Miles Says:

    Jun 28 NOR 1 0 1.29 7.0 7 1 0 3

Lopez’s last 3 starts, btw. They are definitely just riding the hot hand considering that he had little success this season before his recent stretch.

  7. Miles Says:

Well that got kind of messed up but the point is he’s gone 7 innings in 3 straight starts and hasn’t given up more than a run. And the Mets offense is basically AAA right now so hopefully he should feel right at home.

  8. Eb Says:

I think the phils feel Carassco is increddibly overated, and they do not want to deminish his trade value.

I agree with them, we have heard for years how great this kid is, then suddenly people agree that he is a #3/4 pitcher.

  9. Maverick Says:

I think its pretty clear whats happening…

Considering this is the AAA Mets we are playing…..This would be a perfect opportunity to give Kendrick another shot or bring Corrasco up.

The only reason for them not doing so has to be a trade…

My instincts are telling me these guys are currently part of a deal thats being worked….

Having either of them start while chips are on the table could potentially jeopordize the trade….

  10. Smokey Says:

First, let me just say how disappointed I am by this move. To me, this is almost as bad as the year that we signed a kid out of the stands (Adam Bernero) and allowed him to get blown up for 2 innings. Meanwhile, we had guys such as Gio Gonzalez down in the minors.

Maverick, I desperately hope that your trade scenario proves to be correct because Kendrick needs to go and Carrasco might bring a good return. However, if no trade occurs in the near future I believe there is no excuse for debuting El Bastardo and then using Rodrigo Lopez before debuting Carrasco. He may not be ready to jump into the rotation for good, but let him get his feet wet for god’s sake. He has been our “top pitching prospect” for several years now (until Drabek that is).

Regardless of the trade theory, I still find it hard to believe that Rodrigo Lopez’s recent “hot hand” is going to serve us better than say, Andrew Carpenter would.

  11. Sean A Says:

I kinda hoped they would bring Carrasco up finally.. but i can understand why they don’t wanna throw him to the wolves against the Mets even if right now they are pretty much a AAA team right now.. I haven’t heard too much of this guy they called up but hopefully he can be a decent fill in .. Hopefully Carrasco gets his chance eventually

  12. The Little Guy Says:

They probably don’t wanna risk ruining his trade value, especially if he comes up and gets rocked by the limping Mets team.

Lopez is a Major League vet, it isn’t THAT bad of a move, if they stand pat Carrasco, Drabek could be in the rotation next year, maybe they don’t want to ruin the confidence, especially if their not ready.

    We’ll see..

  13. MP Says:

Maverick I completely agree. Lopez has not even been on the radar for the start, and was never mentioned by ANYONE. There is def something brewing – and I would guess it involves those guys.

  14. Miles Says:

In response to those that are disappointed or upset at this move, I would just say that I believe we should trust the organization to know who is best for the team. Just because Carrasco has been a top prospect for a while doesn’t mean that he would be the better option. Either way we are certainly scraping when you consider we already used Carpenter and Bastardo this year, two guys who I thought we wouldn’t see at all this year, unless it was in September during call-ups.

  15. Richie Says:

I don’t mind the move personally. Of course I wanted to see Carrasco pitch for selfish reasons, but let him continue to progress. Lopez has always been serviceable and coming off of TJ and doing well in AAA, maybe he can step up and give us some good outings. He is a two time 15 game winner for crying out loud. He can do some things!!@

  16. The Little Guy Says:

This is why i think its a good and strong move…

If Carrasco comes up and gets rocked, and has a bad outing…now your talking about no trade value, hurt confidence, all that kind of talk.

If Lopez comes up and gets rocked….its not going to phase him much, he has 45 wins in the MLB, in the AL, his confindence will be okay, and he isn’t a trade chip, and isn’t valuable to the organization.

Now if he comes in with some good starts, maybe he could help stablize the rotation, and the team for a bit..

  17. Jackson Says:

YOU WIN THATS ALL. JIMMY I GOT JUICE.

  18. Miles Says:

Richie that’s all well and good but he also has 5 less career wins than Adam Eaton. Being a 15 game winner in 2005 or whenever doesn’t mean much at this point. That being said, I still think its the move is fine. Either way the Phils are set up to look like complete morons or geniuses with how this plays out.

  19. Smokey Says:

You guys have some valid points. You can call me a pessimist for this but I just don’t see Lopez coming up and being any kind of solution to our rotation problems. I would love for him to prove me wrong. Now I understand what everyone is saying about let Carrasco continue to develop, but it is hard to argue against the fact that we are in desperate need of some legitimate help for our starting rotation and Carrasco has already done quite a bit of developing at every possible minor league level. If anyone is interested in another discussion, who do you all think is the most likely candidate for us to acquire if a big trade really is in the works?

  20. Miles Says:

Jackson cut it out with the Jimmy on juice business. We all know he’s the streakiest player of all time. Unless steroids can help you mentally, which is where he is failing, then he hasn’t ever been using them. Don’t even give him that crutch to fall on. It has nothing to do with steroids. He just sucks this year, and we are going to have to live with it until he decides to man up and start hitting the ball.

  21. The Little Guy Says:

    Hes not the solution

  22. Miles Says:

Smokey you don’t have to consider yourself a pessimist. Lopez is not a long term answer. I guarantee the Phils have him slated for 2 starts, which gets you to the break. After that they will hopefully have another arm via trade, and we won’t be worrying about it. I miss Brett, even the homer happy Brett.

  23. Bruce Says:

    Yahoo Sports News item:

“Lopez, 33, was a two-time 15-game winner with the Orioles, but he has neither the blazing fastball that he once did nor the flexible contract that would allow him to be returned to the minors without first clearing waivers.”

  24. CZ Says:

It was actually pretty easy to see this coming and people were definitely talking about it as a possibility. Once they moved Happ up to Thursday you had to figure that Carrasco was out being that he starts tonight at LV. Lopez was already lined up with the Friday start. Also, they traded for Mazone so they will have a starter in LV once they lose Lopez. He has no options left so if and when the Phils don’t need him he will likely get picked up by another team.

  25. joedad Says:

After seeing his stats in his last 3 games, it makes sense to see him up here. 3-0 with 3ER in 21 innings. 15 SO, 2 walks. They are hoping he turned the corner and is back from surgery.

  26. Manny Says:

I don’t think this is about the Phillies not having faith in Carrasco… it’s just that they probably want him to stick in the rotation for good once he makes his debut. Also, imagine if he gets shelled on Friday, he’d lose a lot of trade value and, possibly, no longer be officially considered as our top pitching prospect.

  27. Manny Says:

Plus –I hope this comment doesn’t come back and bite us–: Lopez will still get to start against a Triple A team on Friday.

  28. Bruce Says:

Any “Triple A team” that have a David Wright (NL’s BA leader) in its’ lineup will be dangerous. ;-)

  29. Kennedy Says:

This is dumb, Savery’s on fire right now, Kendrick deserves it more, Carrasco’s got the highest ceiling, Carpenter’s having the best season. Lopez’s best season was back in 2002. All 4 of the guys I named had better be getting shipped for Halladay, or this is dumb.

  30. Jeff of NoVa. Says:

I think the lack of experience in the GM spot is really starting to show. Gillick had a good idea of the minors, and who to move and who to bring up. I think Ruben has been hesitant and does not have the ability to make a major trade for a high quality starter or the experience to get one started. Good GM’s solve problems, not stand still buying time.

Bringing up Lopez is another stand still moment for this pitching staff. He is at no point an answer to any of the Phillies Pitching problems at the major League level.

This is a perfect moment to bring up one of the young future arms to see if we have an answer within the system. Carrasco, Savery, Drabek are all possibilities where Drabek would be the long shot dince he is recovering from TJ surgery. Even Carpenter is a better option.

Lopez is pitching well and is having a nice season in LV but he is not an answer. He is a bandaid for a gun shot wound.

This organization is on the cusp of wasting one of the best hitting lineups in the history of the organization.

I just so frustrated with the decisions made by upper management, and my trust in them is fading daily.

  31. From Section 113 Says:

Carpenter got shelled against the Nationals, or did we all forget that?
Carrasco, has pitched better, but really that’s about the nicest thing you can say about his season so far.

Drabek should not be a possibility. Too Young, too soon.
Kendrick was practically booed out of PA during the Red Sox series.

Savery walks too many batters. And for someone who has struggled mightily with his command, it be a horrible move to double jump him.

Lopez is no going to be our savior. At best he provides some innings for a team hurting right now. With our current options, why not go with the hottest arm on his regular day of rest. IF he implodes he’s out of the organization.

Plus we don’t know whether the other pitchers are being considered in trades. I mean, one has to wonder how long they leave Taylor in AA or if he just never makes it to Leigh because of a trade.

I wonder what it would take to pry Meche away. He didn’t look bad yesterday, but he wasn’t exactly great.
