Phillies Not Giving Up In Trade Market
Posted by Amanda Orr, Fri, July 03, 2009 10:52 PM
The Phillies continue to pursue different players before the July 31 trade deadline. Here are the latest rumors of who are on the Phillies’ radar:
- Jayson Stark reports that the Phillies were looking at Juan Cruz of the Royals. The Royals will only trade the reliever for a Major League ready prospect.
- Stark also reports that the Phillies haven’t given up on Roy Oswalt, Erik Bedard and Cliff Lee.
- Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies remain interested in Chien-Ming Wang, but the Texas Rangers have also jumped into the discussion.
- Heyman also reports the Phillies have discussed Pedro Martinez.

Juan Cruz for a A fringe prospect with one good leg if they are lucky. Come on Royals or Stark, get real
July 3rd, 2009 at 11:16 pm
Stark’s second point is, of course, the interesting one. Sooner or later the Indians will feel pressure to trade Lee since they are completely out of it right now and its going to be hard for them to suddenly turn their fortunes around from one year to another. The Phillies have to be first on the list when they finally start accepting reasonable offers.
Pedro Martinez to the Phillies…. not the answer I would be looking for our pitching issues but definately would be a hell of a side story.
July 3rd, 2009 at 11:57 pm
pedro martinez would sabotage the phils
July 4th, 2009 at 12:51 am
I only want to see the names Oswalt, Bedard, or Lee from this point forward. Those other players would be terrible moves for the Phillies to make. We don’t need Juan Cruz for one of our major league ready talents.
July 4th, 2009 at 3:48 am
lee – cleveland wants too much for lee who will be a f/a after 2010 season
bedard – too prone to injury & bad in locker room
oswalt – yes!!
martinez – too old..
July 4th, 2009 at 4:16 am
lets get Wang – he is pitching better each outing n he might win 10 games in second half.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:27 am
I think we can get wang for drabek, taylor, donald and worley and pay some money to the yankees.
July 4th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Didn’t you say yesterday you had a source claiming the Phils have made an offer of Taylor, Worley and D’Arnaud for Wang…?
July 4th, 2009 at 10:38 am
Jon Heyman now says the Phillies offered “a prospect apparently not to Yankees’ liking” for Wang.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:19 am
Wang is aweful. Drabek better not go anywhere. He is our future. The only player in baseball I would even consider putting his name in for is Roy Halliday.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:23 am
Cliff Lee would require them to give up Taylor, which they should do under no circumstances.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:27 am
Honestly, i’d rather chance our prospects than go after guys like Bedard, Pedro and even Oswalt. Oswalt’s ERA has gone up every year since 2005. His K’s have gone down 4 of the last 5 years, his Innings pitched has also decreased every year since 2005. Clearly the guy is on the back end of his career. Is that worth 2 or 3 solid prospects? Not to me. I’d throw everyone in the farm at Holliday or Haren but I don’t see either of them as being traded. Maybe Haren but probably to a west coast team, he prefers it out there. I also don’t see Holliday going anywhere, the Blue Jays have a legit team they are just in a brutal division. To me, Lee is the best option out there. I might take a chance on Wang but the Yankees will probably want way to much for him. That is why the Yankees never trade for big name guys,(Nady and Swisher are not big name guys) teams laugh at their offers but rather the Yankees throw all their money at free agents. Worked out well for them…not.
July 4th, 2009 at 11:29 am
I would go hard after Lee. And then pray to God that you can get him to agree to a new contract that keeps him here for 3-4 more years. If you can put him and Hamels out there with a solid righty, you have a dangerous rotation. Even with Blanton and Carrasco/Drabek at the back end, even though they are both probably top 3 spot rotation guys.
July 4th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Ok, looks like the Indians need a 2b and catcher. How about Marson, Donald and Carrasco and maybe a single A kid for Lee?
July 4th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Phillies should get Wang because his trading value is low now. His sinker can keep ball in the ballpark and keep team in the game. He still can help team win some games in second half even if he dosen’t pitch like old wang. He will get same win as cliff lee if he pitch well. It’s worthy to trade if phillies can get wang at a low price – just Give yankees some prospects we dont need .
July 4th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
I would not mind Wang as a 3/4. As long as no one finds out he’s jewish. And the Yankees throw in some funny hats and some naked lady tees in the deal. NJ – ONE prospect for Wang? Hmmmmm. Must have been one helluva prospect. I’m guessing Savery or Marson.

July 4th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Personally, I rather see the front office continue to find solutions within the organization such as their latest call ups in Rodrigo Lopez and Sergio Escalona. In an emergency, they also have an experienced starter in the bullpen in Chan Ho Park.
I dread the thought of the front office’s temptation to mortage their farm’s future by offering their best prospects for a HALF season rental pitcher.
It’s not like the Phillies are in a free fall and staring at possible elimination from contention. The NL East is a division that features four contenders that have been struggling at one time or another for the entire first half of the season. Preseason expectations were that it be a tight race to the finish. The team that can stay away from further injuries and be consistent on offense and pitching obviously will have the edge. It will be exciting to see this race in the second half of the season that may best be described as the survival of the fittest.
July 4th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Bruce, I don’t know that the Yankees are asking a lot for Wang. I gotta say I would not feel real comfortable with Happ as our #3 starter in the playoffs, which is how it stands right now, and even less comfortable with Moyer as #4 if we go with a 4 man rotation as we did last year. If we could get Wang for Donald or Marson or Savery, I’d do it. I don’t think that either one of those guys are considered the crown jewels of the farm system.
The Dipsy
July 4th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
make that “neither one of those guys”. Thanks.

July 4th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Dipsy why don’t you go to lehigh Valley and see that Marson is hitting almost 280 he is a really good prospect, who had a slump after the phillies screwed him, by sending him down and keeping balko and coste. After the disappointment of being sent down he is on fire. Wang isn’t worth a catcher who gets on base like this kid. he is a near 300 hitter as a catcher.
July 4th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
^not offended just sounds like something funny i missed
July 4th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
Well, I like Marson. I likes the fact that he gets on base. Is he good defensively? I heard he’s average. And he’s got no power. That said, I would take a good defensive catcher who can bat .270 with an OBP for .360 anytime. But Wang is no bum either.
The Dipsy
July 4th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
As I have said before, I think that Wang would be an interesting project. I think he could do well in Philly but he needs to finish overcoming his issues first and thats the big question at the moment. Is the middle of a penant chase really the best time for that? It would make my Taiwanese friends who are also Phillies fan VERY happy though.
If and only if he continues improving he should be an ok pickup. I mean, I would still much rather have the likes of Lee or Halliday but if their teams are asking a ridiculous amount for them then its not worth it.
July 4th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Personal issue? Does he have Social Anxiety Disorder?
The Dipsy
July 4th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Wang still have two year contract left – not a rental pitcher. He got a good sinker and will be good fit in phllies small ballpark. With phillies defense and offense, Wang can win a lot of games for Phillies. Just give Yankees some good prospects we can afford it if Yankees really want to trade him. Or Rangers got a lot of good prospects in their farm system and will get him
July 4th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
lets give up the farm for this guy? dumb
July 4th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
mikemike. Nobody’s giving up the farm for Wang. Especially cause he’s jewish.

No Wang, No Wang, No Wang He can’t bunt, he can’t run and you sure has hell can’t even the ball out of the infield, I no he is a pitcher but he rounded third last year and hurt his poor little ankle, I saw him at Clearwater this year, with the Yanks and stood there like a friggin’ statue as the ball past him three times for an out, he sucks, he is a classic AL pitcher, can’t hit can’t run and sure has hell can’t even bunt No Wang, No Wang, No Wang
Cliff Lee: Yes ,he is tired of Cleveland already, not getting Halladay from Tronoto, Oswalt McClaine ain’t parting with him, and won’t be able to pull the wool over Astros’ eyes again.
July 4th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
wang just was pulled from game hurt his shoulder
July 4th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Guys stop with trading for Wang. He hasn’t made it out of the 6th inning this year and that’s with the DH. We need a lot more help than than. He may have value down the lin, but we need help now. realiztically we’re looking at Meche, Penny(ship may have sailed) and Washburn with a small gimmer for Lee.
July 4th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Mikemike, sorry to hear that about Wang, but that’s good news for Phillies fans.
July 4th, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Hey phellow phans, where were you all to say we need to dismantle the team? HUH? Nice win today, and a great day on PN because only one met fan and NO phillies phans saying we need to sell Ibanez, madson, etc. Nice day. Come back when you are more optimistic. Sheesh

Mazinman- there is no pressure to trade Lee. He is relatively cheap to keep and the Indians probably feel like next year they will be a contender. The Rays have proven you can be a pretender one year and be a contender the next. I predict Lee is traded next year if the Indians aren’t contending or if someone comes along with a very nice offer.
July 6th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
What about Davis form the D’Backs? He is a lefty and 33 yrs old. He’s not a #1 or #2 but he’s having a real good yr. More innings than hits. Walks a tad high but he avgs 7 innings. He’s in his walk yr so no money to worry about next yr. He’d be a rental.
