Phillies Philet Fish for Sweep

Posted by Amanda Orr, Sun, July 19, 2009 05:26 PM

The Phillies are cruising.  Their eighth straight win marked their longest winning streak since April 30-May 9, 2006, when they won nine consecutive games.  Also, they extended their lead in the division by seven games, their largest margin since June, 2001.

J.A Happ is making a case for the Rookie of Year Award. Happ has been the ace since joining the rotation. In 11 starts (72.1 IP), Happ is 5-0 with a 2.74 ERA and opponents are hitting .233 against him.

Today, Happ wiggled out of jams.  He allowed only five hits and one walk, but a few Pedro Feliz miscues put Happ in a tough spot.  Happ made his best Harry Houdini impression in the sixth by escaping a bases-loaded, no out jam. He ended the inning by striking out Wes Helms.  Happ has pitched 7+ innings in five straight starts.  In that span his ERA is 1.46.

The offense provided five runs, plenty for Happ and the bullpen.  The offense had a chance to score in the first inning after Jimmy Rollins led off with a triple.  However, Rollins made a baserunning mistake and was nailed at  home on a fielders choice.  The bases were loaded that inning, but the Phillies were unable to capitalize.  Luckily, the Marlins found themselves in a similar situation in the bottom half of the inning and weren’t able to take advantage.

The Phillies got on the board in the second after Chase Utley was plunked with the bases loaded.  Raul Ibanez doubled to extend the lead by three.  In the next inning, Rollins’ RBI double made it 4-0.  Rollins finished 3-for-5, a home run shy of the cycle.

Utley scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth, making it 5-0.  Ryan Madson, J.C Romero, Scott Eyre, and Brad Lidge finished the game to secure the seventh victory for Happ and yet another sweep.

do you think someone slipped some acid in felizs water bottle ? the guy was really in a funk the whole game, cholly should have put dobbs in there early on.

  2. rob5000 Says:

I’ll take a Pedro Feliz tripping on acid any day of the week over Greg Dobbs’ defense. Everybody has a bad day.

  3. Jason Bintliff Says:

If you want to find out about a ballplayer tripping on acid during a game, google the name Doc Ellis and acid trip no hitter. Amazing story.

Just a fun win to watch today. This is the baseball the Phils are capable of playing and we’ve come to expect from them.

Nothing like a non-threatening, care-free win on a Sunday. The most annoying part was when Charlie Manuel went to Brad Lidge with 2 outs and a 5-0 lead in the 9th. Over-managing.

  5. mikemike Says:

over managing thank you why doesn’t anyone else see that. why use him in that situation,

  6. NJ Says:

Putting Romero in seemed so but putting Lidge in seemed to be just to get the guy an easy out to build on.

  7. Manny Says:

I just saw on MLB Network that Happ has the 4th best ERA in the NL among starters… The other guys? Matt Cain, Josh Johnson…

    SICK!

  8. Brian of CO Says:

Who else is in the running for Rookie of the Year? Happ has been AWESOME!

  9. Mazinman Says:

If anyone wonders why we love Utley so much I think that the second innings gives you all you need to know. The team needs to drive in a run so he takes one for the team. Because he did that not only did it drive in a run but it then allowed Ibanez to drive in another two.

And Happ, well he has been really good. I think you have to give a lot of credit to both Happ and Park. Happ lost the 5th spot and has come back to be, arguably, our best pitcher. Park lost his spot on the rotation and came back to be one of our best arms in the bullpen. Both have rebounded very well from disappointment.

  10. Brian of CO Says:

My question is regarding the Ashburn. I have been VERY impressed with Happ, and I am on of the Phans on the site who have been saying he has been our best pitcher lately, however I am curious why Ibanez (major case still for MVP screw Pujols LOL) got the Ashburn when Moyer pitched a 1 hit shutout, while today Happ (I understand he deserves it) got the Ashburn for a 5 hit shutout, but I didnt see much talk for Ibanez 2 out double, or Rollins finishing a homer short of the cycle, Happ has been outstanding since coming back from the bullpen. Mazinman has it right, not only Happ, but give Park credit as well, after blowing his chance at the 5th starter spot, he was sent to the bullpen, and has shut alot of us up with his stellar bullpen performance.

    Where are the Muts fans?

  12. Amazinsux Says:

Muts fans must have all crawled back under their rocks. Can’t talk smack 9 games back (and fading fast)!!! Great weekend!

  13. Doug D. Says:

Another beautiful start from Call Me Jay. Right now, he’s been the ace of the rotation, although Cole was really dealing on Thursday. Too bad for him the rains came. Anyway, I think he’s poised for a stellar 2nd half…Utley is the man taking one for the team in the 2nd…Rauuuul did it again. With the bases loaded, he just stroked a high-outside pitch the other way, knowing that J-Roll and Shane would easily score. I wish that Rhyno would do that from time to time instead of always swinging for the downs…Cholly brought in Lidge to get some more of the rust off. Once he warms up in the pen, Cholly will usually bring him in.

  14. beta sigma shag Says:

I don’t mind Charlie putting Lidge in with two outs, he has only pitched like once in the last 5 or 6 days so he wanted him out on the mound, but would have liked to see him leave Ryan in to get last out in the 8th, would have been nice, but all in all a good game. Now it is time to bring on the Cubs, let’s keep this roll going boys.
