Victorino Wins Final Vote!

Posted by Amanda Orr, Thu, July 09, 2009 05:23 PM

UPDATE (5:25 PM): Shane Victorino wins the 2009 Final Vote!  Good job, Phillies fans!
***

Shane Victorino found the secret for getting more votes: a walk-off single.  Coming into Thursday morning, Victorino took the lead for the Final Vote balloting.  Victorino has a very slim margin over Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants.

Assuming Victorino wins, Pennsylvania would like to tally more votes than Hawaii.  Governors Ed Rendell and Linda Lingle teamed up so that if Hawaii wins, they will send pineapples to PA.  If Pennsylvania wins, they will send cheesesteaks to Hawaii. There has been no conformation that Rendell will do a hula dance if Hawaii wins.

Even if Victorino does not win the Final Vote, he could still make the team because Carlos Beltran will be unable to play.

The Phillies and Tigers partnered up, so vote Bran Torino!  Voting ends today at 4:00 p.m.

UPDATE (3:00 PM): Victorino has maintained his lead through 2:00 p.m.

  1. Keith Says:

go Victorino! we’ll get one last update at 2PM.

  2. Kevin Says:

Anxious to see the 2pm update. Hopefully Phillies fans are still pushing in these final hours and can hold off the Giants fans. I am somewhat concerned as we are in the typical lunch hours on the east coast while Giants fans are plugging away.

Enough commenting from me, back to voting!!!

    #votevictorino on Twitter!

  3. Phil Says:

Baseball America’s top 25 prospects came out and Dominic Brown is 17, Michael Taylor and Kyle Drabek are 23 and 24 respectively. Jason Knapp is in the top 50 somewhere too. This all looks promising for the Phillies future.

  4. Winks Tiddley Says:

Pineapples travel nicely. Cheesesteaks travel badly. This means that Shane will win. It is all very logical.

  5. Dave Says:

What Rendell needs to do is lock himself in a room with the rest of the PA legislature and get a budget figured out and stop fucking around with Pineapples and Cheesesteaks. Go Victorino!

  6. John Says:

I just voted exactly 1,000 times, and my boss doesn’t care! He voted 50 times himself! Doing what I can to help.

  7. ryan Says:

ewwwww. i would not want to be eating those 6000 mile away cheesteaks. but I have been to Hawaii, and those pineapples are the best and sweetest thing you will ever taste in your life!

  8. Mazinman Says:

That “Vote Again” button is now engraved in my mind. I really hope that Shame wins after all that.

  9. Keith Says:

hmm is the 2PM update up yet?

  10. Jay Says:

Its still Bran-Torino in the lead according to @Philaphillies on Twitter. Barely, apparently, so keep voting! Thank god its my day off, voting at least once every minute.

  11. Mike D. Says:

Voting as fast as my browser will let me. Come on Shane, come ON!

Does voting end at 4 PM Eastern, or Pacific (as some deadlines end on Pacific Time)?

  12. Jenn Says:

Voting ends at 4pm Eastern time. I’m not moving from this chair until then. My eyes are crossing, but who cares…GO SHANE!

  13. Jay Says:

Sorry, it was the @philliesnation twitter re-tweeting @MLB twitter

  14. Brian Says:

I have emailed everyone I can think of to vote. I even got one chick that wrote me back. A Darlene from a flooring store. Sounds like a hot Phillies fan…YUMMY

  15. Billy Says:

You should send me her email.

  16. Jeff Says:

    Go shane

  17. Brett Says:

Has anyone seen the comments on mlb.com about how Charlie has to decide how long to play Pujols for and who will be Beltran’s replacement? The commenter is saying that best case scenario: Victorino wins final vote, Charlie selects Jayson Werth as Beltran’s replacement, and in the sixth, Charlie pulls out he outfielders that aren’t Ibanez, and we have an all Phillies outfield. Fingers crossed, haha.

  18. Darlene Says:

go Phillies. I loved the Phila. parade, keep up the good work!

  19. Keith Says:

I’m thinking Victorino might start if he gets in.

  20. CZ Says:

I don’t see that happening. Werth will not get selected. If Shane wins the vote I would put my money on Sandoval to get the nod…if not him then it would be Kemp (an actual CF).

  21. CZ Says:

    FWIW – Halladay: 6.1 IP, 9H, 3ER, 8K @ Tampa. Still pitching in the 7th over 100 pitches.

  22. DJ Says:

Ol Cholly said if he has to pick a outfielder to replace Beltran it is going to be Kemp because he was voted so high by the players and the pressure from the MLB. SO WE HAVE TO KEEP VOTING VIC!

  23. jgqergn Says:

    Ha,
Werth is not getting in. Also Vic will not start. One of the Outfielders already in the all-star game will start.

  24. Keith Says:

Halladay not pitching that great today?

  25. Travis Mount Says:

Sandoval can’t get picked to replace Beltran. The only outcomes are Victorino and Kemp or Sandoval and Victorino (Unless Charlie goes nuts and says FU MLB and takes Werth-The-Price-Of-Admission

  26. Matt Stairs Says:

maybe Charlie will pick me because I can hit moonshots, way outta of here

  27. Chuck P Says:

Click (type validation key) tab, space, tab, scroll, click (Vote Now), scroll, click (Vote Again), repeat…

    Halladay went 6 innings, 3 ER, 8 K…

  28. jgqergn Says:

are you serious Keith, You do realize that Line says that he is pitching in the 7th inning. He has only let up 3 runs. and has 8 k’s. I believe he is pitching just fine. hes not superman for god sakes.

  29. jgqergn Says:

kemp plays centerfield also, so Travis Mount, that theory does not make sense. Basically they need at least one centerfielder. So it can be Kemp and Sandoval

  30. Keith Says:

I didn’t say he didn’t pitch well. I asked if he’s not pitching that great today.

  31. Keith Says:

I’m all for getting Halladay, if we don’t get rid of Drabek, Taylor, and Happ

  32. Brian Says:

Hey Darlene. Whats your number hottie.

  33. DJ Says:

Buster Olney just said the Phillies should without a doubt get Halladay if they put a package around Drabek or a package around Donald! He said if the GM gets on the phone and is motivated to get it done it will happen.

  34. Travis Says:

I guess that makes sense but … w/e VOTE VICTORINO for 7 more mins.

Who here misses Pat Gillick yet?

  35. CZ Says:

Voting must be over early, no validation code coming up anymore…drats…

  36. Keith Says:

we should know any minute now . . .

  37. King Says:

DJ what you said is true and we can put a package around just donald that would be amazing!

Are you sure you didn’t hear Drabek AND Donald?

  38. Ryan J Says:

    MLB.com is saying we’ll know between 5 and 5:30

  39. Mazinman Says:

If Ruben can get Halladay for a package around Donald which does not include Drabek, Happ, or Taylor then you have your executive of the year right there. No further consideration is necessary.

  40. Geoff Says:

Yeha if he says “package build around Donald” and thats a legit fact then its a done deal…

  41. DJ Says:

Buster was on Scott Van Pelt and Van Pelt just kept going on about how the Phillies would and need Halladay and would be the favorites to win it all without a doubt and he asked Buster what the Phils would have to do and he said a package around Drabek or a package around Donald but not both! That was just on 20 mins ago

  42. Geoff Says:

Then its a done deal…Ruben Will do it…

  43. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Too late now, but when the validation codes do not appear, hear the visually impaired button, and it plays the code. That was happening to me all day.

  44. Chuck P Says:

Travis… I miss Gillick right now… I have a feeling that he would be able to get this deal done. Not because I don’t like Ruben but because with a deal like this, Gillick’s experience of working with Toronto’s GM might help.

  45. Brian of CO Says:

That was 4pm EST correct? Any word?

  46. Brian of CO Says:

DJ I HIGHLY doubt Ruben will get it done. I think he has the Andy Reid Syndrome. Andy Reid ALWAYS thinks the Eagles recievers are good enough (far from it, except maybe this year) and Im think Ruben will take the We did it last year with this guys and we will do it again stance. Personally I dont think we stand a chance at a repeat without some help.

  47. DJ Says:

Andy Reid I think said that cus Arizona and other teams really didn’t want to trade a receiver to the Eagles. But you might be right and this is going to tell us fans a lot about Ruben! Good or Bad

  48. Alex Says:

    phillies r gay

  49. Philly Geoff Says:

Well said Alex… you dope. Now beat it!

  50. Alex Says:

why the phillies so gay?why cant dey be like the mets?

  51. Travis Says:

Phillies signed Pedro Martinez and Shane Victorino won the final vote. Via Sal Pal on 950 ESPN Radio

  52. philliessuck Says:

i agreee alex phillies are gay.

  53. Sean A Says:

    Good to see Vic win!!

  54. Mazinman Says:

    Woo! Congrats Shane!

  55. Brian of CO Says:

Please tell me thats a joke Travis? We didnt sign one of the main reason why the mets choked in the last few seasons. No class Pedro a Philly? There goes our chance of making it to the playoffs. Mediocrity here we come. We will look like the Mets soon, and that is NOT a good thing.

  56. Ed R. Says:

I wish he was kidding but according to CSN there are reports out of the Dominican Republic that the Phillies signed Pedro to a 1 year and 4 mil deal.

  57. Brian of CO Says:

new idea from the GM’s desk. The phans want a new pitcher, so we will go out and get a washed up no class ignorrant overpriced idiot instead of signing a younger cy young winner.

  58. Keith Says:

    congrats Victorino! boo Pedro

  59. Tools of Ignorance Says:

Zo Zone has a little blurb that the D.R. reported that the Phllies signed pedro for 4 mil., but not other info on the deal, it has not been confirmed yet or denied by amarao last I checked.

    Way to go Shane!!

  60. Brian of CO Says:

Well there goes the playoffs boys. If it comes down to the last week of the season again we will NOT win the NL east with a pitcher like Pedro on the staff. Our Team ERA just doubled, but hey I guess its better to have him than to have Wang from the Yankmees.

  61. Brian of CO Says:

Wow, it went from a GREAT day for the Phillies to see Shane in the All Star game to a HORRIBLE day as a Phan to hear No class Pedro will be in red pinstripes. Well there you go Alex, the Phillies are becoming more like the mets by signing the no class idiot, who loves to choke at the end.

  62. CZ Says:

I think the Pedro signing is perfectly viable. Its not like he has any leverage. He has to come in and do whatever the Phils want him to. If he sucks we cut him and its only 2mil down the drain – would you rather waste 9 mil per season on Adam Eaton or something…oh…ooops.

The guy knows how to pitch and if he’s healthy he can help out. I’d take him over Rodrigo Lopez. He could even pitch out of the bullpen. I like it.

  63. DJ Says:

Did shane really win? Thats would be awesome!

  64. CZ Says:

Everyone applauded the Red Sox in the offseason for signing cheap veteran guys coming off of injuries with lots of upside – Brad Penny & John Smoltz. If they work, they work…if they don’t, no harm no foul. This is the same deal.

  65. Brian of CO Says:

CZ, would you rather him than go after Halladay? I would rather have Halladay, but there goes that pipe dream. Pedro will NOT help us win the division much less repeat.

  66. Brian of CO Says:

One major problem with that view. They did it in the OFF season meaning, if it didnt work the first half of the season, no harm no foul, now we are at the All Star break, if it doesnt work NOW we lose the division.

  67. Ed R. Says:

Anyone thing that maybe they signed Pedro because they know they have to lose Happ if they trade Halladay? This move could very much be a precursor to a trade with Toronto.

  68. CZ Says:

The Pedro signing and the Halladay trade are completely separate issues. 2mil with no commitment means nothing. It’s such a low risk move. This does not mean we are out of money. If they want Halladay they will get him with or without Pedro.

All it might do, in my mind, is make it slightly more likely that they can include Happ in a deal for Doc as they have more depth of veteran pitchers…but that would probably depend on how Pedro perfoms in his first appearances.

  69. DJ Says:

Pedro isn’t a bad ideal considering we have a 82 mph 46 yr old pitcher. Yea give him a chance. It’s better than bringing a young guy up and him getting crushed or the scene be too big for him. Think about it they might not be bringing up one of their prospects because they want to trade them for Halladay. You never know!

  70. Brian of CO Says:

Sorry Ed R, I think exactly the Opposite. I think they signed Pedro AS the starting Pitcher. It was one or the other.

  71. Ed R. Says:

Brian why does signing Pedro mean we lose the division? I will take the track record of Pedro over the track record of Rodrigo Lopez. Clearly the Phillies do not want to rush anyone up from the farm and I am fine with that. With or without Pedro the Phillies are still the best team in the division. Best team in the NL? With or without Pedro the answer is no. If the Phillies don’t trade for Halladay the Cardinals will, that I am almost sure of.

  72. CZ Says:

Pedro can only make us better. The Phillies are not relying on him…they are not stupid enough to let him continuously go out there and get lit up. He will not make us worse.

  73. Brian of CO Says:

so you you would rather pay Pedro 2-40 Mil to get the same results as a prospect paying them 400K?

  74. Ed R. Says:

And you base that on what? The fact that the 5th spot which has been a game of musical chairs for the last month is suddenly now finalized because they have Pedro. Very doubtful. Everyone ripped Amaro for signing Ibanez and now it looks like the best deal of the off season. Might not hurt to give him some benefit of the doubt until he shows that he doesn’t deserve it. So far he has not done that.

  75. Ed R. Says:

You don’t know what the prospect will give you, that is part of what makes them a prospect and not a major leaguer. It’s a risk like everything else, but again, I will chance a guy with a track record of success over someone with no track record at all. If it doesn’t work it doesn’t work and we are just where we are at now. If the Phillies signed Pedro and are now not going to pursue Halladay, which no one has said was the case then why is this bad?

  76. CZ Says:

I love Happ…I think he’s solid and I’d rather the Phils could get Halladay without giving him up. But hear me out. This would be perfect scenario and maybe the Phils are thinking this way. Get Pedro and let him audition for the next few weeks > If he pitches well you can trade for Halladay w/o giving up Drabek by including Happ > Next season Drabek takes Pedro’s spot in the rotation and he’s the future of the staff along with Hamels.

Who knows but there is nothing bad that can come from taking a low-risk flyer on a guy who has won Cy Young awards.

  77. Nationals#1 Says:

not everyone ripped amaro for signing ibanez, i didnt…

  78. Brian of CO Says:

You are correct that everyone ripped Amaro for signing Ibanez, but Ibanez at least wasnt known as being greedy, joking, and had numbers. Pedro’s numbers have been declining in the last few years, so much so that the Mets are laughing that we signed one of there has beens. As I say ALL THE TIME, I love crow, and, and will gladly eat crow if he actually works. However the current #’s are against him. Pedro of 5 years ago would have been nice, Pedro of current is in decline, didnt WOW anyone in the WBC, and wasnt re-signed because he choked at the end. I hope I am wrong.

  79. CZ Says:

I bet if the Mets hadn’t been burned countless times by Pedro in the past they would have loved to take a shot at him…but at this point Minaya would be lynched for it. Give Amaro credit for having some balls!

  80. Brian of CO Says:

thats my exact fear CZ, he has burned the Mets “countless times” and we as Phillies Phans laughed about it because they choked, and things like that, now we sign him and expect different? Why expect different?

  81. David Says:

Victorino making the all star team is yet another example of why fan voting should be eliminated. I am NOT sayin that Victorino is a bad player. To the contrary, I think he is a good player. However, because Manuel decided to bring Howard [undeservedly, sorry guys, you shouldn't bring 4 1b and he was the worst], Sandoval and Reynolds got left off the team and both deserved to be there arguably over Howard, but certainly over Victorino. Beltran shouldnt be on the team and Rollins almost made the team [which would have also been a joke]; all because of fan voting. Fan voting is a joke. Too many blogs advertise voting for “their guys” and fans from EVERY team go out and vote guys who have no business being there. I get why people do it, but it makes a mockery out of being an all star, and is damaging to a roster that should have the BEST at each position. Especially since the game “counts” and could be the difference between the Phils having home field advantage or not. Sorry Im not being a homer and hurraying Vic making the team. Just trying to call it like I see it.

  82. Gregger Says:

There’s 34 players on the all-star team, I dont see why people care if he took 4 first baseman. I think he can fill the rest of the line up from the other 30 players he has.

  83. Joe from NJ Says:

    SF kong-fu panda should win.
Final vote is not fair for west caost – special in tight race at final day – west coast vote until 1pm east coast vote until 4pm – of course east coast will get more vote in.
not many people vote at first day – west coast voters got 3 more USELESS hours at first day. Most people vote at final day when race is heat up – east Coast voters got more USEFUL hours. Nowonder east always win. You can check history in final vote.

  84. David Says:

@gregger: people care that he took 4 1b because he only took 2 3b. Im not saying that it is going to be such a problem logistically, but if you are taking 4 at one position they better be more deserving than anyone at all underchosen positions. that wasn’t the case this year. only 2 3b went and there were guys not chosen who deserved it more than howard. does anyone really think that howard would have been on the team if not for manuel? compare his numbers to sandoval. Howard has more HR and RBI. but he should. he plays at CBP and hits in the best lineup in the league. Sandoval has been an obvious all star and its too bad that he doesnt get to make it there bc he has better numbers than Howard in some respects, and better than Vic across the board.

  85. CZ Says:

David, I’ve been doing a lot of disagreeing today but I have to respond to your comments. Ryan Howard absolutely DOES deserve to be an All-Star. You can call it ‘unfair’ all you want but I personally believe that I a guy who has a spectacular second half of the previous season (2nd in MVP voting remember) should have that count in his favor when there are close comparisons between players. Also, and this has been done by every manager since I can remember, Manuel is going to take some liberties to get some of his guys from the WFC team in the game. Remember Torre taking like 8 Yankees back in the late 90’s? Its the right that you earn…and the truth is that he ONLY took Howard. You could make the case that Feliz, Werth or Victorino could have been selected with out a huge argument. Yeah, ‘this game counts’, which is bull, but its still an exhibition.I’d love to see every ‘deserving’ player make it but you have to draw the line somewhere and when it comes down to it the to the victors go the spoils.

  86. Jaggers Says:

@Joe From NJ – A *substantial* amount of Victorino’s votes came from Hawaii, which would suffer even more from your nonexistent West coast bias than California – 4pm EST is 10am Hawaii. Nevertheless, your objection makes no sense, as the West Coast doesn’t have fewer hours, it has the same amount of time. If anything, having the contest end at roughly the end of the work day means the West Coast had a slightly higher proportion of off-work hours to vote, meaning if there is a bias it’s in favor of the West Coast!
