Why Manuel Selected Howard
Posted by Amanda Orr, Tue, July 07, 2009 08:00 AM
Every year around this time, there is always a debate of who was “snubbed” from the All Star game or complaints about the voting system. There may be other players who deserve it more than Ryan Howard (Pablo Sandoval, etc.) however, Charlie Manuel picked Howard as a reserve for the All Star team and his reasons are understandable.
First off, Howard is Phillie. Manuel’s players are the reason he is coaching the All Star Game in the first place.
Second, Howard is from St. Louis. His numbers at Busch Stadium are incredible. In 17 games, Howard is batting .381 (24-for-63) with 7 HR and 29 RBI. His on-base percentage is .536, his slugging percentage is .746 and his OPS is 1.282.
The National League has four first baseman (Albert Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez, Prince Fielder and Howard), so chances are Howard will not get to play. However, Howard could pinch hit and Manuel feels that Howard is a reliable bat off the bench. He has proven he can hit in his hometown and hit in a pinch. If this is any indication, Manuel isn’t going to make everyone happy. He is going for the win.
Third, there was a section on the All Star ballots to vote for possible Home Run Derby contestants. Howard finished second in the balloting, and he will indeed participate in the home run derby, which he won in 2006.
Whether it is the Home Run Derby, or a pinch hit at-bat, this is Howard’s chance to shine in front of his hometown, and make the most out of the situation.

I’m not sure why there has been so much fuss about Howard going to the All Star game. Correct me if I’m wrong, but he did finish SECOND in the fan voting, did he not? If you finish second then why wouldn’t you go???
July 7th, 2009 at 9:17 am
Yeah Kevin, Rollins finished second too. Howard is not that good this year. He could be good if he learned to draw a walk. His OBP is god awful. I understand Manuel wants to take his own guys so he should have taken Victorino or Werth probably the latter.
July 7th, 2009 at 9:28 am
I cant believe the Blue Jays have actually made Roy Halladay available. The Phillies had better be calling them right now. Obviously you cant trade Drabek or Taylor, but almost everyone else is available. Drabek is a surefire frontline starter, and you just dont trade guys like that.
Maybe Jayson Werth, Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald, & Jason Knapp. Thats what it would take, and I may be on the light side.
July 7th, 2009 at 9:38 am
Charlie Manuel can pick whoever he wants for the All-Star game, that’s the right that he won when he won the World Series. If the Giants have a problem with Sandoval not making the team, then they should try winning the World Series. That’s the system in place, and to the victors go the spoils, right? Besides, enough players are going to opt out with injuries (real or otherwise) that most of the deserving players who got snubbed will probably make it in anyway.
July 7th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Howard should get 2 PAs in his hometown. The fat vegetarian and Gonzalez should pinch-hit for someone besides Pujols and Howard.
July 7th, 2009 at 9:46 am
@ Steve:
agreed… just one of the perks of being the WFC’s…
and oh man, howard has TERRIBLE numbers this year! 20 HRs and 60 RBIs… those are certainly not all-star numbers (laying on the sarcasm thick). this guy is a perrenial 40+ HR / 110+ RBI producer and that’s no longer good enough to earn an allstar spot? man i thought the roid era was coming to an end…
July 7th, 2009 at 9:51 am
You’re right Steve. Plus, anyone remembers that RYAN HOWARD did not go to the All-Star game last year despite the tiny, little fact that HE WAS LEADING THE MLB IN HRs and RBIs!?
And what about Pat Burrell not going last year because Milwaukee went crazy over Corey Hart? Double-snub.
This year, with Ibanez probably getting limited playing time, and Beltran out with his injury, we’ll need outfielders. Vote 4 Shane.

Howard is clearly a better choice than Werth, in my opinion.
As Charlie pointed out on last night’s pregame, he’d like to be able to turn to a guy like Howard or Prince Fielder as a pinch-hitter late in the game.
And as far as pinch-hitting goes, there’s no comparison between Howard and Werth. Howard is simply clutch — 11 for 28 as a pinch-hitter (.393) with 5 HRs and 12 RBI. Werth has three pinch-hit HRs and 9 RBI, but overall he’s 11 for 47 (.234)
You can’t convince me Werth ought to go over Howard just because his OBP is 40 points higher and his average is slightly better – especially when his power numbers aren’t as good.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:12 am
He’s finished in the top 5 in MVP voting in each of the last three seasons. He’s led or been runner up in home runs and RBI’s in the NL the last three seasons. He’s on pace for 40+ home runs and 120+ RBI’s. His fielding has improved this season. He’s the most imposing offensive weapon on the defending World Series champion. It’s ridiculous that there’d even be an issue with his presence on the All-Star team.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:12 am
RBI’s are one of the worst stats to judge a players ability on. It’s line up and team dependent. Howard bats 4th in a stacked Phillies line-up…Albert Pujols bats 3rd in a $hitty Cardinals line-up…
July 7th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Win the World Series and you get to pick your team…simply put….Charlie doesn’t want some Giant’s Rookie over the beast that is Ryan Howard…oh well…they are the rules…live with it!!!
July 7th, 2009 at 10:24 am
Stacked Phillies line-up?!?!?!?
Our lead-off hitter is batting .222 – after spending the better part of a week on a terror.
Skip Schumaker is hitting .300 for St. Louis.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:30 am
Even though the All-Star team is determined solely on stats prior to July, Howard’s numbers from previous falls need to looked at as well. The guy is always a second half player. Not to mention he is a former ROY, MVP, Home Run Derby champ, and the leading slugger on the WFCs. Correct me if I’m wrong, but hasn’t he only been on this team once? The guy is about to become the fastest ever to 200 home runs. There are so many reasons for him to be on the team that I can’t even count them.
July 7th, 2009 at 10:56 am
Sorry, I just don’t think that a guy batting .250 deserves to be in the All Star Game.
July 7th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Hey Pablo Sandoval…sometimes you get the elevator and sometimes ya get the shaft!!! Beat it!!!
July 7th, 2009 at 11:16 am
A closer look at Pujols and Howard shows they bat with a similarly set table. The three hitters ahead of Howard (Rollins, Victorino and Utley) appear to have a combined OBP of .355. The two hitting ahead of Pujols (Schumaker and Rasmus) combine for a .344 OBP.
So don’t believe for second the idea that Howard rides others’ coattails while Pujols wears the coat. That doesn’t seem to bear out.
That said, Pujols is probably the best player in baseball, and likely will go down as one of the best ever. He’s a much better hitter than Howard … you’d never get away with putting the shift on Pujols. And his name is fun to say. But Howard definitely deserved the second-highest vote total at 1B, and he deserves to be part of the squad.

July 7th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
This jerk Mets fan should not be allowed here. To come in here and fill this board up like that. JERK. First off Reyes and Delgado are wastes. Delgado is a steroid freak thats off the juice. He is finished and Reyes is only good when he actually gets on base. Jerk we won the world series with the same rotation minus Myers. You jerk.
July 7th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
here is my new song I wrote. They want us to quit they say mets give up the fight still to Philly I say good night forever good night! I hear the cannons ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I see the mets born mets free forever more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! does anybody see what I see?
July 7th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
Delgado is not on steroids so ha ha ha phillies ERA 4.67. and if Reyes is a waste why does yahoo have him as the 4 best fantasy player? Delgado has close to 500 home runs anyway know what you are talking about
July 7th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
That can’t be a real Mets fan, it has to be someone messing around, not even the dumbest Mets fan is that deluded
July 7th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
I don’t get it… Howard is a stud. He’s an RBI machine… he has been one of the most productive hitters in baseball history over his first four and a half seasons and this city acts like he’s easily replaceable because his batting average is only .255. Give me a break… batting average doesn’t score runs. If the objective of the cleanup hitter is to drive in runs, then Howard is doing it, and doing it, and doing it well. Without a leadoff hitter, he’s 4th in the NL in RBI’s… No one is arguing with the fact that Pujols is having a better season but Howard DEFINITELY deserves the nod.
July 7th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
This is your time to Shine Howard!
July 7th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Really TBT? You think the writers know what they’re talking about when it comes to voting for an MVP? Dustin Pedroia won last year…so undeserved. Furthermore, Howard is not the most imposing offensive weapon on our team. Wouldn’t it be logical that the best hitter on the team is the most opposing offensive threat? The best hitter on the team is Chase Utley…
July 7th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
A close friend of mine is a Mets fan… he’s on suicide watch. He’s ready to storm Minaya’s palace with flaming pitchforks… that is not a real Mets fan.
July 7th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
you check yahoo fantasy lists for your baseball information?
July 7th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
21 Runs last night baby. I cant wait for Joe Torre and The Dodgers sweep the Mets. The phillies will run away with this.
July 7th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
By the way… Howard is a second half player. Post all-star, his batting average and slugging percentages are 50 points and 100 points higher than they are pre all-star break (respectively). He could easily end up with 55 HR and 150 RBI.
July 7th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
wrong wrong wrong the Mets are the best. better than you ha ha ha ha.we just have to stay close until our boys come back then we will win ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha since I am so good at writing music I will call my self the angel of music. I am the angel of music come to your angel of music. lets go mets lets go mets ha ha ha ha ha ha ha I’m right your wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made a new song for Jose Reyes because he plays a violin I made this song. He plays the violin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 7th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
I forgot one part I hear his violin and I get that felling within.
July 7th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
What as asshole.
July 7th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
I really don’t hope you think any of this is actually going to upset us, Mr. Met. You can try your best to annoy us, but you will succeed about as much as the Mets did at CBP this past weekend. Also, get yourself checked out. Good grief.
July 7th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
It hurts!!!!!
July 7th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
My vains hurt on my behind.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Howard’s BA doesn’t bother me one bit…his OBP makes me angry though. Howard could be an OB machine but he refuses to take a walk. When you have Werth, Stairs, or Ibanez batting behind you on any given night draw a walk…any of those 3 are a threat to hit an extra base hit and get him to 3rd or home.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
I am not even worried about the mutts. they have no pitching. santana is becoming another nobody. hes not scary. we took care of that boy. they have a AAA team. i love when wright comes up with the bases loaded. DOUBLE PLAY. Delgado is aweful. Reyes is a punk. Oh no church, evans. scary. i think this guy wrting all this is really really into robby alamar….LOL BOY
July 7th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
Jeff…are you for real, Santana is a nobody? hahahaha he’s been the most dominant pitcher this decade and is still a top 5 pitcher in the entire league. He is a 2nd half pitcher and a cy young threat every year.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Interesting post on Philly.com High Cheese……what it would take to get Hallady. Well done article and comparison of what it took to get Sabathia. I think its doable although the Phillies dont have alot of major league ready talent to give up, and I dont agree with giving up a guy already a major contributer to the big league club (ie. Victorino or Werth).
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/How_much_is_too_much_for_Halladay.html
My 2 cents:
I would love a move to get Hallady. I think it would be ok to get rid of a few big time blue chippers to do it. My offer to the Jays would be:
Marson/Carrasco/Kendrick/D. Brown/Possibly a mid teir minor leaguer
July 7th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
I’d give up that package but I’d put Taylor in there over D. Brown. Brown is projected to be as good offensively as Taylor, but he’ll be faster, with a better arm, and playing CF instead of corner outfield.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
I would not give up the farm for halliday. he is 32 years old. drabek is our future. happ is our future. they need to bring in a pitcher that wont cost us big time talent. they should bring up carrasco. him happ, blanton, moyer, and hamels. i like that.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Tough call on Brown/Taylor. I’d give one of them up, I just don’t know which one. But my package would be Brown/Taylor, plus Carrasco, Marson/Donald and another prospect. I’d stay away from Major league players, and Toronto’s OF is pretty intact, which means they probably wouldn’t have too much interest in Werth or Victorino anyways.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
Jeff, Halladay is the 2nd best pitcher of this decade and a sinker baller with no significant injury history other than the groin(once) and a come backer fastball. His arms are fine. Sinkerballers have longevity on their side. He’s a future HoFer and giving up a kings ransom for him would be worth it.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Yeah Jeff, gotta disagree with you. Carrasco Drabek, and Happ may be the future, but by the time they have hit their prime, JRolls, Utley, and Howard will be past theirs. This team has a 2-4 year window right now, and it’s important that they attack while they can.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Halladay would be great, if we can do it without losing anybody from our current roster plus Drabek and Taylor I’d do it.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
I’d give up anyone in the minors not named Drabek…
July 7th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
The best thing that happened this season… the Phillies getting beaten twice in one week, including a near no-hitter, by Ricky Romero.
Let me explain…
Ricky Romero’s emergence as a ML-ready pitcher (he’s been re-donkulous in his last 7 starts) has the BJ’s feeling like they can live without Halladay… which is crazy… but the door has been opened and we have an opportunity to make a big splash. We’ll see your Santana and raise you Halladay!
Gavin… if that would get it done, I would be all about it but if the BoSox are throwing Buchholz out there, we’re probably going to have to give them Happ and I’m ok with that if it allows us to keep Carrasco/Drabek.
Marson has great value and Toronto needs a catcher… a deal headlined by Marson, Happ, D. Brown and Knapp OR Kendrick OR player to be named would be comparable to anything out there, I would think.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
I like option #5 in the article. Brown, Carrasco, Marson and Kendrick. Flip Taylor for Brown(keep the one we think has a better future). It’s rare you get three stud every day players like Utley, Rollins and Howard. Tossin Ibanez. Now is the time. Hamels, Halladay, Blanton, Happ and Moyer is a darn good staff! Heck, we may even be able to resign Halladay if he’s still healthy.
July 7th, 2009 at 2:59 pm
I’m more than happy to give up Carrasco to get Halladay. I don’t wanna part with Drabek and would prefer to not part with Brown and Taylor.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
I like that last package. Taylor is WAY more valuable than Brown becuase hes closer to the majors. Brown is still a ways off.
Carrasco, Brown, Marson, Kendrick/Carpenter (whoever of that C-ish level the jays want).
Under no circumstances do you trade Drabek or Taylor. Power like that only comes along every so often and when you have it you DONT trade it. Those are really the only two untouchables concerning Halladay.
The Blue Jays are not going to get the Phililes’ top prospects – the Phillies have said as much repeatedly.
The Red Sox are NOT going to get Roy Halladay. Thats preposterous. The Yankees also have no chance to get Roy Halladay. The Yankees have no prospects and Bostons biggest need is a bat like Victor Martinez.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Also, I don’t think that the Jays are dumb enough to trade the best pitcher in the AL to the AL especially an AL East team. The Sox and Yankees would have to pay twice as much as the Phillies to get him.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
Ok, we all agree, option 45 it is. Get Rubin on the phone, LOL.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
Anyone besides Drabek or Taylor seems fine.
Honestly, if they could pull this off, a 1-2 of Halladay, Hamels/Hamels, Halladay….in a 5 or 7 game series, with their offense…
Hello parade down broad street.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
I’d only do it we can sign him to a new contract extension. Drabek needs to be off the table as well. I also agree that the Jays have a fair amount of outfield depth, which is good…..giving up Werth or Victorino at this stage wouldn’t be wise for us. They are both integral pieces of the puzzle for us as far as a repeat championship is concerned. It’s not like you can insert Mayberry into an everyday role at this level right now and expect him to even come close to what either Werth or Vic can do.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
You guys can disagree all you want. thats why you dont run the team. I would not mortgage my future for a 32 year old pitcher. i dont care how good he is. drabek will be that good.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
I don’t think anybody is suggesting mortgaging the future, Jeff….
We all have said no Drabek and Taylor….
and I (and a few others) have said no to Werth or Victorino, who are both either in their prime or just entering it. They are both the immediate future…..like the next 2 or 3 years.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Jeff, i dont know what your talking about, but NO ONE on this site said anything about trading Drabek for anyone.
Also, do you really think since Halladay is 32 that it would scare the Phillies away from trying to obtain him? Jeff do you know how old Jamie Moyer is? We’ll he’s 46.
Halladay has been THE best RH pitcher in the league for the last 5 years, he has no injury history, the man throws complete games almost everytime he’s out there, hes a ground ball pitcher and gets a lot of Ks.
I don’t know about you, but the likes of Mayberry, Marson, Donald, Carrasco, Kendrick, Carpenter, Knapp, Brown..The Jays can have who they wan’t and ill take Halladay and start him in game 1 of the World Series.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
GEOFF Knapp is a stud prospect, he has 109 strikeouts in 79 innings, and is at low a at 18 very young.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
Little Guy….I’d trade ALL the guys you mentioned for Halladay alone……no questions asked.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
5 for 1…
1. Carrasco OR Happ
2. Marson
3. Brown OR Taylor
4. If Happ… Savery OR Flande… If Carrasco… Knapp OR Kendrick
5. Player to be named OR draft pick
The player to be named is intriguing… so many possibilities!
July 7th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
No Taylor….and…..if possible…….no Happ. Happ’s been our most consistent starter and has a lot of potential to be a very solid #2 or #3 for many years.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Chuck i feel you, i don’t know how anyone can conceivably say that it wouldn’t be a good move for them to obtain him, keep the ML roster in-tact and Drabek and Taylor, anyone else…take your pick JP.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
LOL. You guys are to much. why dont we throw in coste as well. they are not going to talk kendrick, mayberry and the players you listed. why would they want our trash. marson, what did he ever do in the minors. kendrick is aweful. just cut him lose. if they are going to trade the best pitcher they will want top tier talent. like drabek.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Its very possible the Phillies could pull this deal off w/o trading Happ/Taylor/Drabek/Werth/ or Victorino. I Think everyone else should be on the table. I’m usually on the side of not trading the farm, but you have to give up something to get something. If we were trading these guys for Marquis/Wang/Bedard/ I would not be for it, but Halladay is about as big a lock as you could trade for. They could possibly extend his contract…..they have to be in win now mode. If you keep Drabek/Happ/Taylor and most likely Donald etc. you still have a good nucleus. Go for it.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Ill drive Donald to Toronto if he’s involved in a trade for Halladay.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
I dont think anyone is suggesting we trade Kendrick/Mayberry/Majewski for Halladay. Maybe RAJ calls Richhardi and says. We’ll give you 4 guys for Halladay. Here’s a list of untouchables. (Most of the ML Roster and Drabek and Taylor). Everyone else in the system is on the table. When the Jays ask for a 5th guy you throw them a Single A guy or a mid tier prospect.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Jeff, The Jays do need a Catcher and the Phils have a plethera of C talent in the minors, so that is a legitimate fit.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
3 guys I’d absolutely HATE to see go in a trade deal, even for Halladay: Happ (you can’t fill a hole by creating another one!… plus he’s incredible value right now and in the future), Taylor (future Vladimir Guerrero?, Ryan Howard-esque numbers), and Drabek (probably our top pitcher).
I’d hate to see Knapp go, too because I’ve heard that he’s solid.
Hopefully, team officials still consider Carrasco our No.1 prospect and he and someone else (Dominic Brown?) could headline a package for Halladay.
I’d say that Carrasco, Brown, Marson/Donald, and Kendrick would be a decent trade deal for Halladay for both sides. The guy is a stud but we’d only have him for 1.5 years… that’s not enough of a reason to kill the farm. In essence, something similar to what Chuck P posted @ 3:52 (without Taylor or Happ).
July 7th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Marson is a good catching prospect…
Taylor/Brown are our top hitting prospects…
Happ/Carrasco are our top ML-ready pitching prospects…
We can’t do better than that and we should’t have to.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Let me add that Brown and Carrasco are, at least on paper, OUR CURRENT TOP 2 PROSPECTS. I doubt that the offer I mention above wouldn’t be taken seriously.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
I don’t see the Jays giving up Halladay for just prospects, no matter how good they may look on paper. Kendrick has not shown that he’s a major league pitcher, neither has Carrasco. They are going to want Happ, and/or someone already on the major league roster, I can’t imagine they’d do it for what you guys are saying. Maybe I’m wrong, but we ARE talking Halladay here.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Oh, oh…baseball fantasy trade chat going on here. I’ll be brief and cut out by expressing my agreement with Amanda’s points of view on Howard and his..”chance to shine in front of his hometown, and make the most out of the situation.”
July 7th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
Fellas, let me just say that 5 years ago…these conversations started with names like Utley, Howard and Hamels, so let’s not get too crazy with these names…We need a starter, no doubt, but wiping the farm out is crazy…on espn radio 950 they are talking about Happ, Taylor and Drabek for him?? That is ridiculous…Only one of them should be included, with Bastardo/Savery, Donald/Marson, and send them Carrasco. It should be Happ, Carrasco, Bastardo and Donald. I would be fine with that.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
Very true Richie. Normally I’d say no, but this is Halladay. Only 2 minor league untouchables.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
I dont want to give up happ, drabek or marson. Drabek will be a stud. Maybe next year. Happ has been such a joy to watch. You get rid of happ you still have a big hole. They need a second tier pitcher that wont cost them the farm. We could get one. With this offense we dont need halliday.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Richie…you’re going in the right direction. I like your style. I’d offer this:
Bastardo/Savery, Carrasco, Savery, Marson, and Donald.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
oops didn’t mean to put Savery twice.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Richie good point…however… we are in a position to WIN another World Series. Halladay makes us a serious contender to repeat.
Now our farm may be good and keep us competative in the future but there’s no gauruntee. Like any sport you only have a small window where everything falls into place and you are a serious contender.
Keeping Marson/Donald Corrasco/Bastardo/Drabek may gauruntee that the phillies win 80-90 games for years to come but… when your talking about adding another Trophy to the case… its not them.. not now…
No prospect should be untouchable….if there is every a time to justify trading the farm its now… and we are talking about Halladay here.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Wow… Happ, Taylor and Drabek might be too much (Happ/Carrasco or Drabek, not both). I think that we’re going to have to send them Taylor OR Brown… we have to remember that Halladay is a stud and it’s very likely that many of these guys won’t pan out. Is 1.5 years of Halladay worth four or five “could be the next…” prospects??
July 7th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Who else besides the Phillies do you think have a legit shot at Halladay? I hate to break it to the Noreaster’s up there, but the Yanks and Sox have no chance b/c the Jays arent trading Halladay to their biggest rivals. You think the Mets would trade us Santana?
My guess is the Angels, Cubs, and Dodgers.

The Brewers, Angels, and Dodgers have a legit shot at him. The Cubs don’t really have the minor league talent. The Mets have no shot at Halladay so you can let out a sigh of relief. The Braves might be able to let go of Hanson to get him but that would just make them retarded.

I would give up whatever they wanted minus anyone on the ML roster today! Almost all AL itchers that go to the NL kill it, ie Sabathia, Clemens and Randy Johnson. We would be the Favorites across the board especially with the lineup we have

OF- great depth but we can’t keep all of these guys: Vic, Werth, Brown, Taylor, Mayberry… there are only 3 spots in the OF. One of them has to go… would love to move (in order) Mayberry, Brown, Taylor, Werth… Vic/Taylor untouchable.
Ruiz is going to be here a long time (sign him LT… get it done)… Sorry, Lou… Marson/D’Arnaud
Infield: we don’t have much. Donald is bait but probably not worth much (where are those guys that said he was untouchable last year?)… move Donald or whoever else they might like
Our value is in our pitching prospects (in this order)… Carpenter, Worley, Savery, Kendrick, Bastardo (if not a starter, could be a very good closer…), Knapp, Flande, Drabek, Carrasco, Happ.
What about throwing in Myers’ exprining contract?

I see your point, Georgie… but getting CC Sabathia last year required just 1 top prospect (though a VERY prized one) and 3 other prospects. Of course, that was for half a year. So, thinking along those lines, 2 top prospects (and 2 or 3 others) “should” get Halladay and his 1.5 year contract.
Let’s not forget that the other team will be notably reducing payroll, while we’ll be adding over 20 million. So that needs to be taken into account as well.

The Cubs may not be willing to take on Halladays $$ b/c of the limbo of their sale. Could the Rangers be a player???

Its easy to grin when a man’s ship comes in. I can’t but help smile to see that miles has piles. that he was looking at for a while. It makes so happy to know that the mets will come from behind and you all be crying even the Hawaiian that you say is flying. I worked hard on that song tell me if you like it I think it is catchy.

Cubs dont have the prospects..we might be one of the only teams that has the payroll space AND the prospects…mayeb the only one..

well today is the 7th so 24 days of waiting and speculating! And u never know we could also do a 3 team deal!

All song writing aside we all know that the Mets are clearly the best team in the division when healthy.

I understand that our window is closing within the next two to three years, but a good system for any team should be to win a world series or two with every generation of young players(Howard, Hamels, Utley) mixed with players left over from the last generation(Burrell, Rollins, Myers). With this in mind, we have a good if not great opportunity to make this happen. With Drabek, Taylor, Brown and Knapp mixed with leftovers Utley, Hamels, Howard, and Rollins. This is how dynasties are constructed. Look at the mid-90’s yanks(Jeter, Posada, Rivera, Pettitte mixed with Tino, O’neill…etc.) We just won a WS with this team and added a great quality bat in Ibanez…yes we lost Myers, but just replace him with 2nd Tier starter….PLEASE DON’T SPEND THE FARM!!
It’s the first time in years that we have this type of talent down there…possibly the first time in our 130 year history!!!

Plus Toronto owes us for 1993 and the Joe Carter moment!

I don’t care how old they are Mets, all I know is that they have this shiny thing on their finger, I’m not sure what it is, but Wright, Reyes, and Krod don’t….sorry Mets Scum…..age is a number nothing quite adds up to the World Champions of Baseball…especially not scum from Queens.

True, the Jays need to shed payroll so it comes down to who gives up the best prospects, IMO. I doubt this would force the Indians to blink on Lee, but it can’t hurt. I think they wait until next year though because their division ismuch more winnable next year.
