Gameday: (59-48) At Phillies (60-45)

Posted by Amanda Orr, Thu, August 06, 2009 12:30 PM

Colorado Rockies (59-48) at Philadelphia Phillies (60-45)

Aaron Cook (10-3, 3.88 ERA) vs. Cliff Lee (8-9, 3.02 ERA)

Time: 1:05 at Citizens Bank Park
Weather:  Cloudy, 69
TV:Comcast Sportsnet, MLB Network
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Cliff Lee will be making his first start in front of the Phillies’ faithful.  He has already earned support from the fans with a complete game in his last start.  He has never faced any of the current Rockies hitters in his career, so the advantage is to him.

Lee will be opposed by the Rockies ace, Aaron Cook.  Cook is a groundball pitcher, which will benefit him at Citizens Bank Park.  He faced the Phillies in April and gave up three runs in six innings.  Ryan Howard has Cook in his book.  He is hitting .429 and has a home run against him.

Because it is a day game, and cooler, the ball probably will not fly out of the yard like it did last night.  The Phillies will need to manufacture runs in a different way, and build consistency with the offense.  A win today will win the series.

Isle of Arran Blonde Wheat
Your Gameday Beer- Isle of Arran Blonde Wheat
Nothing says summer like a Blonde Wheat. This one comes from a relatively new microbrewery on the Isle of Arran just off the coast of Scotland. It won the contest for best wheat beer in Britain the year after it opened. The wheat flavor is prominent in this beer, but there is also a tart fruitiness. Have it with some simply cooked grilled chicken. – By Brian

    From High Cheese Blog

General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said today that lefthander J.A. Happ will remain in the Phillies rotation for the rest of the season, and raised the possibility of a six-man rotation that would utlilize both Pedro Martinez and Jamie Moyer as starters.

“Happ’s not going out of anywhere,” Amaro said, providing the first definitive answer about the young lefty’s future after a week of speculation surrounding a possible return to the bullpen.

Amaro also said Martinez was impressive at Double-A Reading last night. And while no final decisions have been made, Amaro said he felt like Martinez was ready to get major league hitters out.

Ya know, as much as we all love Harry, there was one thing that I hoped went with him to the Great Beyond, where the legends go. This being the practice of saying so and so has so and so “in his book”. Harry started saying it about 5 years ago and I just couldn’t stand it. Its like he just pulled it out of thin air or something. And I thought he overused it to boot. And then Wheels starting using it once in a while. I hate that phrase. Does anyone else feel this way?

  3. The Dipsy Says:

A six man rotation? No freakin way! Moyer to the pen – immediately. Moyer must have passed thru waivers.

  4. psujoe Says:

If a payer clear waivers is it still confidential or do they make it public?

  5. psujoe Says:

    payer=player

  6. The Dipsy Says:

    Confidential….I think.

    The Dipsy

  7. christopher Says:

“I hate that phrase. Does anyone else feel this way?”

nope, you’re the only one, ever.

  8. christopher Says:

and no it’s not confidential when a player clears waivers.

  9. psujoe Says:

Dipsy, I thought so. mlbtraderumors.com has a featue that lists players that cleae waivers. Since it’s confidential it makes no sense. It’s always blank.

  10. Brian of CO Says:

Ace vs Ace. Which team will score runs.

  11. The Dipsy Says:

    Christopher…seriously? That doesn’t bother anyone?

    The Dipsy

  12. christopher Says:

nope, nobody. you are the one and only person in the entire world.

  13. The Dipsy Says:

I believe it is confidential. I think about it this way: Do you think Jaime would like it if waivers were asked and he passed thru and it got published or reported. Basically it would mean that nobody wanted you and now every one knows it.

  14. Keith Says:

    ut oh

  15. Terrence Says:

    darn

  16. psujoe Says:

Lee looked mortal, but Jimmy needs to keep that ball in the infield.

  17. Keith Says:

    Jimmmmmmmmmmmy

  18. Oliver Says:

    Cliff Lee: 1IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 1K, 0HR, 21 pitches + facing Aaron Cook (10-3, 3.88, groundball machine pitcher) = loss for Phillies

    Rockies now 60-48
Phillies now 60-46 only 5 up on Marlins who currently lead Nationals 6-0 bottom 2nd

Trust me folks!!! I am a Phillies fan!!! Don’t care if you say that since im saying these things that i am a mets fan. I AM A FREAKIN PHILLIES PHAN BUT THE TRUTH IS THE PHILLIES ARE GOING TO GET BOUNCED IN THE FIRST ROUND BY THE ROCKIES OR THE GIANTS IN THREE GAMES YOU HEARD IT RIGHT HERE
TIME TO CHEER FOR THE ROCKS AND GIANTS!! AND RED SOX

  19. Keith Says:

    wtf Oliver?

  20. Keith Says:

we’re now tied, stupid Oliver lol :D

  21. Ashley, Brian, Cory, Danielle, Eric, Frank, Greg, Henry, Ian, Jen, Kevin, Linda, Mike, Nick, Oscar, Paul, Quincy, Rachel, Susan, Tim, Ursula, Vince, Wesley, Xavier, Yelena, Zack Says:

    Oliver is an idiot

  22. Terrence Says:

71st rbi for chase and almost got his 24th dinger of the year

  23. Ashley, Brian, Cory, Danielle, Eric, Frank, Greg, Henry, Ian, Jen, Kevin, Linda, Mike, Nick, Oscar, Paul, Quincy, Rachel, Susan, Tim, Ursula, Vince, Wesley, Xavier, Yelena, Zack Says:

If you were a true Phillies fan you wouldn’t root for anybody else.

  24. Brian of CO Says:

Oliver isnt a true Phillies Phan, just let it go.

  25. Ed R. Says:

Wow that ump looked like he was trying upper cut someone.

  26. Ed R. Says:

Oh and Oliver, the Phils are 6 up. But whose counting?

  27. Ed R. Says:

Is Howard friggin retarded smacking the ball around like that? Suppose Utley wasn’t there backing him up? What a childish move.

  28. Keith Says:

    Bako gets a hit

  29. Brian of CO Says:

12 game hitting streak now for J-Roll I believe.

  30. j reed Says:

I always miss the first two innings on these thrusday game. ugh…Aaron Cook….sinkerballer. sinkers and phillies don’t play well together

  31. Keith Says:

    Marlins 6 Nationals 3

  32. j reed Says:

well i guess the Nats’ 4 game winning streak might be coming to an end

  33. Keith Says:

well the Nationals were losing 6-0

  34. j reed Says:

but then again the marlins bullpen is questionable….I worry more about the Braves…I saw some highlights of that Hanson kid…good off speed stuff, killer curve. That rotation seems custom built to our weakness. I don’t know how the braves scheledule matches up against ours, but ours isn’t a cakewalk by any stretch. Good thing we finish strong

  35. j reed Says:

With the Marlins I only worry about J.Johnson and Nolasco and their bull pen is full pitchers we can feast on, not so much with the braves bull pen anymore

  36. Terri Says:

We need to hit like we did last night. We suck with RISP!

  37. Sean Says:

Nice to hear Happ isn’t goin anywhere. Now everyone take the finger off the panic button. We got ourselves a good ol pitchers duel goin on. Go Phils!

  38. The Original Chuck P Says:

Thought that ball Fowler hit was going to end up in the seats…

Love me some Cliff Lee… this guy works fast and throws some filth.

Nats battling back. Still time for my prediction to come true (I said that the Nats would sweep the Marlins and would find themselves 7 GB and deflated before the upcoming series)

  39. j reed Says:

man Lee’s curve knuckles like crazy…i like it…well maybe the Nats will extend their streak….fish 8, nats 7, a real battle of the bull pens

  40. Ed R. Says:

I wonder how long Lee will last today. He is at 80 pitches through 5 innings. I would hope he can go at least 7.

  41. Keith Says:

    BAKOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  42. Terri Says:

    WOW Paul!

  43. Ed R. Says:

Well aint that some sh*t. Way to go BAKO!!!

  44. The Original Chuck P Says:

    BAKOOOOOOOOOO

  45. j reed Says:

    paul freakin bako…get you some

  46. Sean Says:

    WTF! BAKO?!?

  47. psujoe Says:

    Bako!

  48. Brian of CO Says:

Who was that who hit the Home and what did he di with the real Paul Bako?

  49. Repeat! Says:

Keith… The only thing childish about your post is your childish response. Stop bashing Howard for no reason. Bako delivers! 2-1 Philadelphia

  50. Keith Says:

Jimmmmmy, HR away from the cycle

  51. j reed Says:

    alright mr. rollins

  52. Manny Says:

    Paul Bako wohoooo!!!!

  53. Ed R. Says:

    Suicide squeeze anyone?

  54. Sean Says:

    Here we go!

  55. The Original Chuck P Says:

    Paul Back! Back! Back! Bak-O

Jimmy Rollins needs a HR for the cycle… he has homered in 3 straight games.

  56. Keith Says:

what r u talking about Repeat!?

  57. Keith Says:

    woo! 3-1 :D

  58. Repeat! Says:

Keith I’m very sorry. That post was mean for ED R. I apologize. 3-1. Ed your the retard.

  59. Brian of CO Says:

Ok, so we have the lead, its up to Lee to pitch the way he did last outing. Or pitch like Happ did yesterday!

  60. The Original Chuck P Says:

Vic does not look healthy at all… I would hate to see him have to go first to third. Chase needs to hit one out.

  61. Jeff Says:

8-7 Florida with the bases loaded for florida

  62. The Original Chuck P Says:

    Sooo close…

  63. Ed R. Says:

I am a retard why? Because I thought that Howard swatting the ball away after he mis played a ball was childish? I am not bashing Howard. Did you even see what he did? Truthfully, that was a tough play, and I had no problem with him not making it. It was what he did afterwards that was ridiculous.

Oh and by the way, name calling, very mature. But I am the retard. Interesting.

  64. Don M Says:

We should release Pual Bak ohhh, wait, nevermind… he calls a good game, and had a clutch hit in a tight spot

I want to see him catch Hamels just once.. and we’ll see what the difference may be

  65. David M Says:

wow we got things cooking today. Bako actually hit a homer.

  66. Ed R. Says:

I hope I don’t Jinx anyone but the Phils don’t have a K yet. I know Cook is not a strike out pitcher but even still.

  67. j reed Says:

Don M. – I ‘m all for giving props to the back-up catcher or any catcher for that matter but in Hamels case what can he call that ruiz can’t…4 seamer and a change-up. Hamels has everything but the arsenal. perhaps the shortened off-season and injury in spring training kept him from polishing his curveball which right now isn’t exactly fooling anyone.

    Wow Cook’s out…i like that

  68. Keith Says:

    Cook might be injured

  69. Ed R. Says:

JRoll is a homer away from the cyle…245 avg, highest of the season. As J-Roll goes, so go the Phillies.

  70. Sean Says:

    You Jinxed us you ditz!

  71. Ed R. Says:

    Opps…my bad. Sorry.

  72. Sean Says:

2 in a row! See what you did!

  73. Ed R. Says:

hahahaha, well at least we know the Phils don’t strike out against non strike out pitchers. Thats a plus.

  74. NJ Says:

J reed- Hamels has more than the 4 seamer and standard change-up as well as the under-developed curve, pretty sure he throws a sinking 2 seamer and he has the two types of change with the Madduxesque circle-change which is more deceiving but isn’t as tight as the regular change.

As you hinted its the off-season that’s thrown Hamels out of whack.

  75. Jeff Says:

18 Ks so far happ and lee. wow

  76. The Original Chuck P Says:

HAHA… he certainly learned from the last mistake.

  77. The Original Chuck P Says:

Love this umps third strike call…

  78. Manny Says:

Looks like it’ll be up to Madson and Lidge to close this out… finally!

  79. Keith Says:

    9 Ks for Cliff Lee

    11 for Pedro
    10 for Happ
    9 for Lee
can we see 12 from Blanton tomorrow? :D ;)

  80. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Ok guys, we got a game with the Rockies today. And that only means one thing- bad news for the Rockies!

  81. psujoe Says:

Do you bring Madson in the 8th?

  82. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Cliff Lee almost looked like Happ with that performance today.

  83. Manny Says:

Definitely, psujoe! This bullpen has had plenty of rest… time to shut em down with the Bridge to Lidge! Ah, 2008

  84. Bob Says:

    Cliff Lee’s 1st 2 outings:

    16 IP, 10 H, 1 R. 1 word to describe that: WOW

  85. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I would go with Madson and Lidge. Time to get the bullpen back in order.

  86. Bob Says:

LMAO @ Cliff Lee almost looked like Happ….

  87. Miles Says:

Is everyone ready for the cycle? Let’s go get it James. (I would also take a ball in the gap).

  88. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Ben Francisco is not a great player, be he does not get himself out. Bruntlett should take note of that.

  89. Mazinman Says:

Lee has definately lived up to the hype so far. Lets go Jimmy!

  90. Morris Buttermaker Says:

    Scratch that last comment.

  91. Terri Says:

    spoke too soon Morris.

  92. Miles Says:

Well at least Francisco one-upped Bruntlett and got on base….he just couldn’t stay on base very long.

  93. Manny Says:

hahah too much jinxing on here today…

  94. CZ Says:

ACTUALLY WOULDN’T IT BE MORE LIKELY TO BE 8?

  95. Miles Says:

So much this horrible Rockies bullpen….we can’t seem to do anything against them. I know they are pitching better of late but geez they are still 15th in the league in bullpen ERA.

  96. Brian of CO Says:

    Uh oh, Madson and Lidge.

  97. Keith Says:

CZ, is that referring to Blanton?

  98. Manny Says:

    C’MON MAD DOG!!!!!

  99. Miles Says:

It’s crazy how much difference a year makes. Last year down the stretch I chalked up a win for us as soon as we got to Madson and Lidge. This year I’m practically hunched over the toilet just waiting to be sick to my stomach.

  100. Manny Says:

    Throw the change-up!!

  101. Jeff Says:

    8-8 marlins and nats.

  102. NJ Says:

Francisco’s a pretty good player, he’d be in the starting outfield of a hell of a lot of teams around the league and is possibly the best all-around 4th outfielder in the game in Philly.

  103. CZ Says:

Yeah, sorry, I didn’t realize I had fallen so far behind! Considering the K #’s are decreasing in succession * would be the next total – and very feasible. Anyway, the moment has passed…

  104. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Marlins appear to be cooling off a bit. They are the most bi-polar team in the league.

  105. Miles Says:

Manny I think he has lost a ton of confidence in his change up ever since that Baltimore game. He hung two in a row and they killed them. I really think he’s afraid to throw it at a big spot.

  106. Miles Says:

Although that change up looked pretty damn good haha

  107. CZ Says:

    8 not * – wow I’m on fire today…

  108. Keith Says:

well 8 Ks would still be great, imagine if someone had a perfect game with 27 strikeouts!

  109. Miles Says:

@Morris…I think the Phils would give the Fish a run for their money for that title

  110. Miles Says:

    HEYOOOO!

  111. Keith Says:

    alright Madson!

  112. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Ok, sweet DP. Time for some insurance runs.

  113. psujoe Says:

Ok, Let’s get some more runs because I don’t trust Lidge.

    GO NATS GO!

  114. Manny Says:

Nicely done, Mad Dog! The Bridge to Lidge is doing just fine!

  115. MP Says:

Nats are now tied with the Marlins in the 8th

  116. Manny Says:

Cmon lets get one more run for Lidge!!

  117. Mazinman Says:

The Marlins are definately falling apart right now. To blow yet another lead against the Nats would be devestating. A great time to go against them in the weekend.

  118. Bob Says:

    BELIEVE IN LIDGE!!!

    Come on Brad, I believe!!

  119. Morris Buttermaker Says:

The Phillies have had a few bad stretches. But for a majority of the year, they have played fairly well. The Marlins started off like 11-1, and then went like 5-19 or something crazy like that. They are currently trying to fight off being swept by the Nationals.

  120. Manny Says:

    Wohoo Howard goes 0-4 again

  121. Brian of CO Says:

Lidge in the 9th? I hope hes on.

  122. Repeat! Says:

For some of you what Ryan Howard or Jimmy Rollins does will be never enough. Your hate surfaces no matter how much you try to hide it. Ryan gets an Rbi in 1st inn yesterday. “Wow, a hit w/risp.” If that was Chase Jason W or Raul. It’s good job. Way to go. Jimmy hits a 1 out 2r hr with a man on third. “Are u more surprised that he got a home run or that he got a runner in from third w/less than 2outs.” Wasn’t that the 3rd straight game he homered? “Ryan Howard is a goon.” The 1st time I critized Chase some of u went crazy. It wasn’t until I critized the entire lineup at the same time that the Chase worshiping racist Jroll/Howard bashers were ok with it. And yes you are a retard Ed. A racist retard. People like u and Jeff and others are cowards because you create “win-win” situations for yourselves. You bash JRoll and Howard. If they fail after that, the bashing continues. If they do well;it’s they got lucky or they can’t keep that up.If they substain it you praise them, but w/an eyerow raised. Stop it as you aren’t fooling anyone. The Phillies won the WS because of a great group of players from all other the planet. But when it’s people of color that fail; for some of you the hates comes out. Sad. Of course you’ll deny it. And you’ll use Howard’s stats today as confirmation for displaying your hate. Why? “Win-Win” Cowards.

  123. Miles Says:

YES that was saucy….against Phillie killer Spilborghs too

  124. Morris Buttermaker Says:

At this point in the season, and with the Phillies where they are in the league, they just need to try to take 2 out of 3 from each series. I expect the same against the Marlins. But a sweep would be sweet.

  125. CZ Says:

At least Lidge’s ERA is under 7…

  126. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Somebody has a bug up their butt.

  127. Keith Says:

    Phillies win! :D

  128. Mazinman Says:

    Yes! Way to go Lidge!

  129. Terri Says:

    Thank You Brad Lidge!

  130. Brett Says:

Race has nothing to do with it. Howard is an over-hyped, one dimensional player. He gives poor at bats and so far this season, he has failed to show why he should be worth 15-18 million. Rollins is playing hard and playing well right now, so I won’t criticize, but statistically, Howard has little right to be the superstar everyone treats him like.

  131. Manny Says:

YES!!! We win! Nice going Lidge!! 2 Ks, not too bad!!

  132. Sean Says:

Thats the lidge i like to see

  133. David M Says:

    good save Lidge

  134. Repeat! Says:

Brade Lidge! Two/three from Rockies. Now sweep the Fish, and separate the Contenders from the Dreamers.

  135. Anthony Says:

Did anyone notice Pedro come out of the dugout after the win?

  136. Sean Says:

Hey Brett, where we gonna find another 40+ homer guy? He may have some poor ABs but he can change any game with one swing.

  137. Mazinman Says:

Lee and Happ were incredible. They went up against the third best run scoring offense in the NL and limited them to just 1 run. That’s the pitching we need.

  138. psujoe Says:

Great job by the Pen. Man, the Nats are on their 7th pitcher. Fish are 4 pitchers in.

  139. Miles Says:

Listen repeat!….I don’t know why you see the need to make such a big deal about this when we are about to win, but you obviously like your opinion a lot. I think that you are being very selective with what you read on here. I bash Werth constantly on here. Constantly. He drives me nuts with his bad at bats. But no one calls me a racist for only picking on him and not on Howard or Jimmy.

People get pissed at Howard cause they don’t like the strikeouts and Jimmy had a HORRIBLE start. What do you expect. I’m sure some fans are racist but there is no need to go on ridiculous rants. So stop.

Oh, Phils win, by the way.

  140. Manny Says:

Great pitching today for the Phils today all around!

  141. Georgie Says:

Now that’s the kind of game I love, 2.5 hours, barely, great pitching all around, some nice O from the Phils, and Georgie has time for a nap before going to Reading, yippeeee!!!

    Later.

  142. Morris Buttermaker Says:

We should have traded for Cliff Lee sooner. he is the best pitcher the Phillies have had in long time. It feels strange to actually feel confident about the Phillies starting pitching. First time in a while I have felt this way.

  143. Mazinman Says:

Thank goodness that airfare to Philadelphia is cheap in September. I need to see Lee pitch!

  144. christopher Says:

hell of a game. how good do you have to feel about the lee trade at this point? great time to be a phils fan.

  145. Morris Buttermaker Says:

My problem with Howard is that he does not learn from his mistakes. Watching his at-bats is like watching Brian’s Song over and over again, and just thinking that eventually Brian is going to pull through. They are going to throw slider low and away, and Howard is going to swing. We all know that when he gets hot, he can carry the team. We have seen him doing it a few times. But somebody needs to work with him. When he first came into the majors he could hit .300. Now he can’t. He needs to work on it.

  146. Ed R. Says:

I have an idea, lets go on a rant, calling out someone they don’t even know. Proclaiming them to be a retard and a racist. I am curious as to what draws you to that conclusion? How do you know that I am a racist? I take it you assume I am white, and thus bash only J-Roll and Howard because they are black? How do you know I am white? You don’t. You assume it. So assuming I am white, and only bash blacks makes you what? An equal rights activist? Get over yourself please. I have commented about Moyer, Lidge, Werth and Hamels…last time I checked, all white. Race has nothing to do with this, though in your sad attempt to find something to argue with me about you pull race into it. Way to go. Thank you so much for showing us how evolved you are.

Oh and for the record, I am African American. My name is Edwin, but I go by Ed. Anything else you want to say there internet tough guy?

  147. Repeat! Says:

Brett…. Wrong. It’s not the ctr. of J-Roll, Ryan and this whole lineup drives us all crazy because they’re so inconsist. And the majority of Phillies Nation are fare and open minded. This is Philly not St. Louis. But it’s how you it. I went to the HK with my twin. As we walking passed HK’s Casket and up the 1st line to go take seat, some people whispered loud enough for us to hear “A Black guy and two of them, what are they doing here?” We couldn’t believe it. But we just ignored them. So don’t tell me this site doesn’t have some racist posters and some racists Phillies Fans.

  148. Repeat! Says:

    Ed. Denial? Classic…..

  149. NJ Says:

Howard’s just like a wrecking ball it’s not pretty and picks up a hell of a lot of dents along the way but it’ll cause damage. The thing he needs to work on above all is being more of a threat in the heart of the line-up so Utley and Ibanez see better pitches to hit.

  150. Ed R. Says:

This site does have racist posters, and the Phillies do have racist fans. Just like every other website and every other team. Sadly racism still exists everywhere. So does ignorance.

  151. Anthony Says:

Did anyone else see Pedro? Any word on who got sent down to make room for him?

  152. Ed R. Says:

    Exactly what am I denying?

Repeat, I hope you realize that you are making yourself look like an a$$hole to everyone on here.

  153. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I get on Jimmy Rollins’ case all of the time. But I know that off the field- ,from a second-hand experience, he is an incredible person. My problem with him is that he does not always play smart baseball.

People on here also know that I love to criticize Chase Utley. And I often makes jokes about how much everybody loves him. I refer to him as “Golden Boy” and have stated that “He farts excellence” and “His strikeouts can cure cancer” in reference to the undying love the man gets.

  154. Ed R. Says:

Pedro was in the dugout. They have not mentioned anyone getting sent down. I don’t think they will just yet. With Pedro having pitched last night he obviously is not ready to be used yet, so why make a move now, you know? I am sure they will send someone down over the weekend. My guess is Lopez.

  155. Mazinman Says:

    Go Nats!

  156. psujoe Says:

    10-8 Nats. Yeah baby!

  157. Ed R. Says:

Don’t worry Morris, he wasn’t saying you were a racist. Just me apparently. Still waiting to hear what he based that well thought out conclusion on.

  158. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Nats are up 2 in the bottom of the 8th with Zimmerman on third.

  159. Jeff Says:

I have been saying it forever. I love howard and its not race. stop with that. he was one tool player. he is very streaky and swings at everything. he needs to learn. i have no confidence when he is up. i feel a strikeout if coming.

  160. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I’m white. And my least favorite player of the past 5 years was Aaron Rowand. I still can’t stand him. That proves I am not a racist.

  161. Manny Says:

A great win, plus Amaro saying “Happ’s not going out of anywhere…”

Oh, what a great day :)

  162. Jeff Says:

man with this pitching and a little offense we will be very hard to beat. when you can send lee, hamels, blanton, and happ you are in good shape.

  163. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Zimmerman just scored on a balk. Can’t get any worse for the Marlins right now.

  164. Morris Buttermaker Says:

    12-8 Nats.

  165. Repeat! Says:

    Ed you are a meanie.

  166. Ed R. Says:

Morris. Just curious, why don’t you like Rowand? Is it because he is a “dirtball” player as Wheels so lovingly refers to him>

  167. Keith Says:

    alright Nationals!

  168. Mike N Says:

Madson/Lidge looking like last year! AWESOME!! and of course Lee is a badass.

  169. Ed R. Says:

    I must be.

  170. Don M Says:

I think the person that plays the least “Smart Baseball” on the team is Victorino ..

    Rollins, Werth take chances..

Utley is one of the most heads-up players I’ve ever seen .. I just think, that he thinks he’s too cool for school (kinda the same reason I don’t like Vic)

But I like ROllins and Howard because I think they’re just big kids

  171. CZ Says:

I’ll tell you what, I’m glad the Phils played the lion share of their games against the Nats before now, they are tearing the cover off the ball lately.

  172. Repeat! Says:

If you are black Ed it doesn’t change anything. I didn’t call you a white racists. I called you a racist. A black person can’t be a racists or an “Uncle Tom” just as anyone else. An activist? In a way I am Ed…. Last summer when that “white” (I call him little Shawn) kid got jumped in the train station by 12 kids mostly black as several people watched in horror; I didn’t just shake my head when I saw the story on the news. My being a Black Male had nothing to do with how I felt. I called all the local news stations. And I said something needs to be done. This was a hate crime. They told no it wasn’t. I said how so? I said if the kid was black Al and Jeese would be here. I said let me me come on the air an express how I feel becuase something has to be done. Only the local Fox29 gave me the time of day. But even they backed out at the last moment. So I called Fox News, CNN and MSBNC. Only CNN listed but they never returned my calls. So I wrote letters to the NAACP and Left phone messages.I also wrote letters to Jeese Jackson and Al Sharpton as well. Again, nothing. So I went down town to CN8 with a picket sign. The COPs let me stay there for about 5 hours and they said that I had to leave. I called New York’s NAACP chapter. They only directed to the “Angles” that we were vol in the subway. That’s it. I called them and I vol with them after work for a week. But nothing ever came out of it said. I also told a Daily News reporter what I was trying to do. I wrote an any letter in the paper. She said that I wish more people were as brave as you were. I also made cals and wrote letters to get the City to stop the “horse buggies” as those poor horses look sickly and absolutely miserable. So yes, I guess I can be called somewhat of an activist. I call them like I seem ED. I don’t care what your race is.

  173. Morris Buttermaker Says:

My problem with Rowand was that each day when he was getting ready to leave his house and come to the game. he made sure he brought his hat, glove, a pack of cigarettes and a short length of tube so that he could blow smoke up everybody’s ass.

  174. Ed R. Says:

I agree with you completely C.Z. I would not want to face them right now.

  175. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Rowand came up so small at the plate so many times. He was horrible in the playoff series against the Rockies. I used to refer to him as “Mr. Intense Strike Out.” He would strike out, and then stand there like a badass, as if the ump was just going to award him first base.

  176. Don M Says:

I could understand not being a huge Rowand fan… or thinking that people thought he was better than he was, that’s true

But thats not HIS fault… he plays with his heart on his sleeve..

  177. Mostone Says:

I dunno about Rowand – I can still seing him running face first into the wall…

But who cares, the Phils had two awesome wins just now against the Rockies!

  178. Ed R. Says:

Repeat you have to be kidding me. Absolutely kidding me if you think I am racist. Especially being as that I am one of the founding members of a local community action agency against racism here in my local town. Have participated in and chaired many local events for the area promoting equality.

I find it even more ridiculous that you derived that I am a racist simply because I said that Howard’s swatting the ball away after he was not able to make a play was “childish”.

Repeat you clearly think much more of yourself then pretty much everyone on this board does. All you have succeeded in doing is making false accusations against someone you have never met without any proof what so ever. Something that is so ridiculous they actually have laws against it. I am done with this discussion because it is going no where. Please continue to act like you know me or my motivation for what I say and do because in the end, I am not the one that looks like the bad guy here. You do.

  179. Don M Says:

hahaha… didn’t the entire lineup play horrible against the Rockies??

Blaming the #6 hitter probably isn’t the best place to go with your arguement…

  180. Don M Says:

Can everyone (or both of you) stop with all the racist stuff…

    Racism exists.. in every city…

lets not try to pick out what people said on here as something racist.. just let it go and talk baseball

  181. Ed R. Says:

Thanks Morris. I appreciate you answering my question. That is your opinion and I respect that. I can’t say I really have any thoughts on Rowand one way or the other. He did play balls out on every play though, for that I am greatful.

For the record though, no one came up big in the series vs the Rockies in 07. That’s why they got swept.

  182. Brett Says:

So it is unfair to criticize a player’s plate discipline if he is black? I wish I’d known sooner.

I just don’t get it. A lot of the players will find something they’re not good at, and they’ll work to correct it. Jayson Werth earlier this year was taking too many pitches so he started swinging at some early strikes, and he had that ridiculous streak before the All Star Game.

Jimmy Rollins’ timing was off, so he worked on it and started using the double-toe-tap, and now he’s a machine.

But Ryan Howard goes up to the plate 6 days a week and knows they’re going to throw him a slider low and away, and then he swings at it. If he doesn’t swing at it, he watches a fastball go down the middle, then argues with the ump about whether or not it was a strike.

Maybe it’s Milt Thompson’s fault, or is he beyond blame to because of the color of his skin.

I don’t need to prove to anyone I’m not a racist, and I don’t think it’s fair for anyone else here to have to either.

  183. Morris Buttermaker Says:

I was on vacation in France when he ran into the wall. So I missed all of the hype about it.

My nail in the coffin with him was a year and a half ago when he signed with the Giants and he said he wanted to play for a winner. The Giants were horrible when he signed with him. He reminds me of one of those people who thinks everybody likes him, and everybody acts like they like him. But then everybody makes fun of him and complains about him as soon as he leaves the room.

  184. Morris Buttermaker Says:

In game 2 against the Rockies in the 4th or 5th inning. Rowand was batting, and he struck out swinging on a wild pitch. And he just stood there at the plate. He would have easily made it to first on the play. I felt like I was the only person in the stadium who saw it. And Rowand was the veteran who had been there before, he was supposed to help the guys who had never been there.

My biggest problem with him was all of the stupid plays, like when he injured Utley.

  185. Ed R. Says:

He may have wanted to play for a winner but I am sure the cash they offered him didn’t hinder his decision either. I don’t remember anyone ever saying anything negative about him in regarding to what type of team mate he is so I really can’t say.

Don M. I appreciate your post, and I did end it on my part, but just for the record, don’t you think you would defend yourself if someone called you a racist when you aren’t? I don’t know about you, but I do find it to be offensive and uncalled for.

  186. Baseballbriefs.com Says:

Baseballbriefs.com tracking back Gameday: (59-48) At Phillies (60-45)…

Baseballbriefs.com tracking back Gameday: (59-48) At Phillies (60-45)…

  187. j reed Says:

wow i stepped out for a few minutes and missed the drama…..

  188. Ed R. Says:

I will agree with you there Morris, he did have a knack for standing at the plate after he struck out, as if he was waiting for the ump to change the call. But then again, a lot of guys do that.

All I know is that he gave 120% every play. Did he get burned some of the time? Sure, that is what happens when you take chances. But he also made some great plays too.

  189. Don M Says:

I know.. I defend myself on here all the time too…. but its just a blog, sometimes we all need to relax on here..

The thing with Rowand going to the Giants… I think they offered him like TWICE as much money as any other team.. because they wanted a veteran on their team and in their clubhouse. Right now their plan seems to be working.. they are playing good baseball, with a lockeroom with lots of young guys..

Rowand, you, me, or anyone else is going to say “THE RIGHT THING” .. over the honest thing in that situation. Did you expect him to say, “I don’t care how bad they are, they are offereing me $60 Million.. which will be enough to take care of my family, my in-laws, my children’s children’s children.. etc..

Can’t blame a guy for taking the money when he’s a Free Agent.. and im glad the Phillies let him walk and made the roster moves we did to follow

  190. Ed R. Says:

I agree with you completely Don. Rowand did what was best for him and his family. I don’t blame him for that.

  191. Brett Says:

Rowand always seemed to me like a good guy who played the game well. And for like, seven consecutive games, every time I went he’d hit a home run.

  192. Paul Says:

News out – Amaro says Happ is not going to the bullpen, he didn’t say who (if anyone) was either.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4381477

  193. Ed R. Says:

Here is a question, with the Marlins coming to town this weekend. Would you rather play a team that just came off sweeping someone, or a team that just got swept?

I was always more afraid of a team that was just swept thinking that they were due to snap out of it and never wanted it to be against the Phils. For the Marlins, this is pretty much near panic mode for them, if they don’t win this series they will have a serious hole to dig out of.

Just curious as to what everyones thoughts were.

  194. Brett Says:

I’d rather play a team that was just swept. There’s a definite psychological advantage there.

  195. The Dipsy Says:

Ed is a “racist”??? I had no idea. When Juan Samuel was critcized for swinging at everything in sight his reply was “You gotta hit to get off the island” (San Pedro DM). Lots of latin players were and are free swingers. Does that make my comment racist? Or a comment based on socio-economic factors?

    The Dipsy

  196. Don M Says:

Always, 100%, Definitely would rather play a team that just GOT SWEPT, rather than a team that just swept someone

confidence is a huge thing in this game… Happ has more confidence than a lot of pitchers with better stuff.. and so he performs better..

    night ya’ll

  197. The Original Chuck P Says:

This thread is ridiculous… leave it alone.

As to your question, Brett… I think that it depends… It depends on the underlying situaiton surrounding the sweep. Sometimes teams get swept and they know that they’re better than they’ve played; they know that they have got something to prove. You rarely see a team sweep back to back series… but sometimes those teams are 2 out of 3 machines (like the Phils/Dodgers) and it doesn’t matter.

And sometimes a sweep can be dowright demoralizing… which is what I see going on.

The Marlins have to fly to Philadelphia knowing the Phillies are playing well and that they just got swept… that’s going to be a long quiet flight unless they start arguing… in either case, the Marlins know that they just lost to the best AAA team in the major leagues and guys aren’t feeling good about themselves. They got handled by the Nats and now find themselves 7 games behind heading to Philadelphia for a tough weekend series. I can’t imagine that team being too optimistic at this point… we take 2 out of 3.

  198. Harold Says:

    I smell BEER SUMMIT!!!!!!

  199. christopher Says:

pedro was in the dugout in for at least one game before his start last night… it doesn’t mean anyone got sent down for him.

  200. Ed R. Says:

Good responses guys. You all think we will catch the Dodgers for best record in the NL? I am kind of hoping the Giants, Rockies and Dodgers beat the crap out of each other down the stretch with the Giants being left watching the playoffs from their couches. Nothing against them, they just scare me the most.

  201. Ed R. Says:

Did anyone else see the article, and I can’t remember where I saw it, but it said that the slider is the pitch that Howard is having the most SUCCESS hitting this year? I don’t recall if the article mentioned the location of the slider or not just that he was doing very well against it.

  202. CZ Says:

Ed, I saw that. It was Jeff Passan on Yahoo Sports. he was quoting Fangraphs statistics. Very interesting stuff.

  203. SOFTFOAMEARPLUGS.COM Says:

    Roy who??!!

  204. Repeat! Says:

Brett… Never called you anything; yet alone a racist . Anyone can ctr. any one regardless of color, race religion. I just gave u an account of what at the HK services. For some reason u seem to either ignore or miss that in my other post. Dipsy… A couple of weeks ago when JRoll was really hot; some posters were still bashing him. I said the same thing I’m saying now. Other posters agreed about the J-Roll bashing. That’s exactly the point I was trying to make with the”win-win” comments I made. Ed R….. You are truly sad. Do you at least ackn. that some of the posts about JRoll/Howard cross the line? I bet you don’t. And I bet u wouldn’t say anything as you’ll do anything to stay in the good graces of white bigots. Here’s some Uncle Tom Sample questions: Would you say President Andrew Jackson was right for ignoring the US Supreme Court’s ruling that would of allowed the seminoles and cherokee tribes among others to stay on their land? Jackson’s responsible for the “Trail of Tears.” That’s no different from Hilter. You’d say:All white people are good. No matter what;I’d say he wasn’t Hilter but he was a criminal. How about Bush’s nasty tactics in the 2000 republican primaries.”McCain fathering a illg. black child” robo calls. Or McCain waiting to just before he anounced his 2000 campaign to chaneg his “no vote” to make ML Holiday a holl in Arz. You’d Say:All white are people are good. Bush/K.Rove meant no harm. If the non racists on this board said Repeat! makes a good point: : You’d say? I’ll get back to you on that one. Your posts point to Uncle Tom. Say what u will but I have made educated points. All the racists on here can @iss my ass. Philly treated Jackie Robinson worst than any other team. Racism toward black/latino MLB players is passed on not inhert. And it has been passed down to some current Phillies Fans. You’l go nuts over this sure, but I don’t really care. The truth hurts bad. How does it fell??

  205. Mark B. Says:

Going to be interesting to see if Pedro can compete with the top 4 of the rotation. Amaro gets another A for keeping Happ in hte rotation.

  206. Ed R. Says:

Repeat, I never said that some of the posts on this site didn’t cross the line, some of them do. I have on occasion made comments that went a little overboard, but never once has any of them been racist. However I am not going to call out everyone that makes a racist comment. That is for them to live with. Not me. But again, my comment was not racist. All I said Howard acted childish. I didn’t say he acted thuggish, or black, or ghetto or anything ridiculous like that did I?

When did this board become about politics? Last time I checked it was Phillies Nation, and their primary goal to my understanding is to provide a forum for Phillies fans to discuss the team they love. Whether they are black, white, yellow, pink or green.

Once again, I will repeat myself, not sure why because you clearly do not listen. But stop pretending like you know me and what I would say, stop putting words in my mouth. Here is a list of my comments made today before you called me out…exactly which one of them had a racist overtone? If anyone else feels like commenting that one of them is racist then please do so. But as far as I see it, Repeat you are the only one to think so.

Oh and Oliver, the Phils are 6 up. But whose counting?

    Ed R. Says:
    August 6th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Is Howard friggin retarded smacking the ball around like that? Suppose Utley wasn’t there backing him up? What a childish move.

    Ed R. Says:
    August 6th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
I wonder how long Lee will last today. He is at 80 pitches through 5 innings. I would hope he can go at least 7.

    Ed R. Says:
    August 6th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Well aint that some sh*t. Way to go BAKO!!!

    Ed R. Says:
    August 6th, 2009 at 2:26 pm
    Suicide squeeze anyone?

The worst part about this is, I don’t even know why I am so offended by all this, or why I care that someone I don’t know is calling me a racist when I am not. I guess because I consider racist to be a dirty word and have never once been called a racist by anyone and then suddenly some guy comes on a Phillies Board and calls me out.

DOes anyone see what this guy is talking about? Or am I just completely missing it?

  207. Ed R. Says:

PS: that is officially my last post on the topic because I do not want to clog up this board anymore than I already have. I apologize to all those who have had to suffer through this.

    Go Phillies.

  208. j reed Says:

what article in fan graphs? It’s a little hard reading thru all the action

  209. ryan Says:

Ryan Howard is the best home run hitter in the game during the last 4 years. that is not debatable. he’s an unbelievable cleanup hitter who is only surpassed by Pujols and maybe like 2 other guys. the people criticizing him are ridiculous and have incredibly short memories.

  210. Kramer Says:

My theory is we remember every Ryan Howard at bat. Every one in the stadium and at home watching the game on TV stops what they’re doing to watch a Howard at-bat. When he delivers, we go “that’s our boy!”. But when he gets into a slump (as he has of late), they villify him. Even I go “aww, man. Come on!” when he stirkes out looking with RISP.

The thing is, the expectations of the fan are highest with Howard. As a consequence, we remember every at bat of his, and because of the baseball law of averages, we’re almost always going to end up dissapointed in some regard statistically when it comes to Howard at-bats. That doesn’t mean 27+ other teams in the league wouldn’t gladly have him in their line-up. He’s been so great, in such a short time span relatively speaking, and yet, the fans expect more.

  211. Repeat! Says:

Edr… The black apologist. The “sellout” nail in the coffin “Masa, Iz so sorry all this is happening.” Does this mean I can no longer be a house slave. “Iz sure hope not Masa.” Back to base to baseball: I was sure was cool when they showed a glimsp of a phillies fan siiting behind the plate. He was cheering for the Yanks like crazy in the 4th inning. He like me hope Boston misses the post season. After the blown Dobb’s walk-off; I don’t trust those umps in a World Series game in Philly/Fenway.

  212. Repeat! Says:

    I meant back to baseball

  213. Ed R. Says:

“Masa, Iz so sorry all this is happening.” Does this mean I can no longer be a house slave. “Iz sure hope not Masa.”

And that’s not racist? Repeat you are an absolute fraud. You want to talk about nails in the coffin. That statement alone single handedly ruined everything you said earlier today. You took that statement and basically attributed that type of talk to all black’s. You went so far as to even attribute blacks to slavery. Way to Repeat, you truly are beacon of advocacy for your race you scum bag.

  214. PhilliesDave Says:

I have to agree with Ed R. on this one. I read through all the posts and didn’t see one even remotely racist comment. Repeat! your personal witch hunt is not appreciated by anyone. It is unnecessary and unfair of you to wrongly accuse and judge someone who didn’t do anything wrong. You may feel like it is your job to stand up against perceived racism and I commend you for that, but be fair about it. Do it right, don’t attack someone who didn’t do anything wrong. Let it go. You turned nothing into a giant showing about racism. It isn’t fair to anyone who visits this site and wants to talk baseball and instead has to see you verbally attacking someone. This is Phillies Nation, where we come to talk about the Phillies. If you can’t do that, then go somewhere else.
