Gameday: Diamondbacks (54-65) At Phillies (66-49)
Posted by Amanda Orr, Tue, August 18, 2009 06:22 PM
UPDATE: John Finger reports (via Twitter) that the game will re-start at 9:00 PM. Jamie Moyer is warming up.
Arizona Diamondbacks (54-65) at Philadelphia Phillies (66-49)
Jon Garland (6-10, 4.28 ERA) vs. Pedro Martinez (1-0, 5.40 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Fair, 87
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
After a six game road trip, the Phillies return home for a quick stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Phillies took two out of three against the D-backs at the end of July. It isn’t as hot as it is Arizona, but with the warm weather, the ball will be flying out of Citizens Bank Park.
Pedro Martinez will make his home debut in his second start of the season. He pitched well against the Cubs, allowing three runs in five innings. Garland was backed by horrible defense when he faced the Phillies earlier this year. He gave up six runs (three earned) in six innings.
As it gets closer to September, Ryan Howard is starting to heat up. He has four home runs in the last four games. He is batting .381 will 11 RBI over the last seven days. Howard has Garland in his book, homering off him in July. The Diamondbacks have a big bopper as well. Mark Reynolds has homered in three straight games. He is batting .285 with 38 homers and a .981 OPS on the season. With the humidity, expect a power (or strike out) display, especially from these two sluggers.
Your Gameday Beer – Mama’s Little Yella Pils
Brewed by the Oskar Blues Brewery out in Colorado, Mama’s Pils was one of the exciting new drinks featured down at DC Beer Week. It is a Czech-style pilsener comes only midly recommended after a summer of trying lots of these kind of beers. This is mostly because it starts off a little too hoppy; however, the taste definitely grows on you finish the glass. I would also try to drink it cold, it is a summer brew after all. This also means it goes well with BBQ anything. – By Brian

Guess who’s back????????????????
August 18th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
I guess there just had to be atleast one favre sighting here
August 18th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Good stuff Pedro….at least it’s not Jamie, right Geoff?
August 18th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Wow, off to a great start. I hope Chan Ho has his stuff tonight cuz he’s gonna be called on by the 4th.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Good play….if that would have sailed into center I might have had to take about a 10 minute break from the game…haha
August 18th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
Finally throwing some fastballs….looks like about 90 on our gun. Beautiful change at 79 gets Mar(K) “with a capital K” Reynolds.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
I love Pedro but his stamina is going to be the problem. I hope he does a good job. Moyer is not the answer.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Nice to see Jimmy has continued his way back to normalcy.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:20 pm
WOO HOO!!! When JRoll gets a lead-off hit, that’s always a good sign!
August 18th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
In 4 career starts at Citizens Bank Park as a member of the Red Sox and Mets, Pedro Martinez is 1-1 having allowed 20 hits, 16 runs, 16 earned runs, 4 homeruns, 8 walks and striking out 25 in those 4 starts. He has gone 1IP, 7IP, 5IP and 5.1IP in each of those starts. Can’t find the ERA at CBP. Does anyone know? And oh for the two starts he got no decisions in, his teams lost both of them
August 18th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
Love that Hawaii 5-0 theme~
August 18th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Ooo… Ryan Howard, really hot with HRs, has bases loaded…
August 18th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Howard swings at ball 1
August 18th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
crap
August 18th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
must score moment
August 18th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
ooof.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
crap again
August 18th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
From the preview: “With the humidity, expect a power (or strike out) display, especially from these two sluggers.”
Well both Reynolds and Howard have started out striking out
August 18th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
God Howard just put the ball in the air!!!! If we don’t score at least 2 in this inning, someone needs to start throwing things
August 18th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
ugh
August 18th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
crap a third time
August 18th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Oh, that’s just awful.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
are you kidding me
August 18th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
howard swings at that first pitch over his head with bases loaded no outs. and we dont score a run.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Welllll…..I mean we did make him throw a lot of pitches…..ummm…yeah that’s good right?
August 18th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
That was simply a joke.
The Dipsy
August 18th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
I am at work and not watching the game. Bases loaded and they fail again with 0 OUTS
August 18th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Grrrr… what a wasted opportunity.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Howard had a brutal at bat but Werth deserves equal blame. A foul out = a strikeout.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Werth and Ibanez have been pathetic lately. Absolutely pathetic.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
That was the worst display of hitting with Runners in scoring position!!!
Come Werth and Howard need to realize that one run is better than nothing.
I also think its time to move Ibanez in the lineup maybe to 7th He has been a ground out machine, maybe sit him one day and get his crap together.
I think we are in for a frustrating night
August 18th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
Thank goodness, a quick inning.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:40 pm
braves lead 3-0 at mets bottom 2nd
August 18th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Jeff of Nova….they have been sitting Raul once a week already so I mean how often can you sit him to get it together?
And cmon everybody you act like you had never seen us do that before….we do it all the time. Knowing us we will just hit four solo home runs and win.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
bases loaded and they do nothing what a joke
August 18th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
I wonder if Pedro remembers how to bunt
August 18th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
True about Ibanez, but it is not working, maybe its all evening out cause he started so hot that he needs to come back to his 270 BA. If that is the case bat him 8th
August 18th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
Nice level swings from Jimmy tonight. Hopefully more of that to come….
August 18th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
Stump the fans answer = Luis Gonzalez…..easiest question ever, cmon guys.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Yeah Jimmy and Vic have been doing their job, unfortunately the middle needs to come around and be patient.
Howard swung at bad pitches and Werth and Ibanez had 3 pitches between them, very sad
August 18th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Through 2 innings, very frustrating. Can’t bring one run in with bases loaded and no outs for 4-5-6 hitters who have combined to hit 81HRS and 239RBI. Then can’t bunt over runner to second and instead strike out swinging on 3 foul bunts
August 18th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
The weather certainly looks promising…..
August 18th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
Ugh… I hate this epileptic commercial…
August 18th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Jamie better be prepared to throw in this one because we gotta shut Pedro down if it downpours.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
Ugh. Rain delay.
August 18th, 2009 at 7:56 pm
there goes Pedro nice outing so far, Guess we will see Moyer if the rain is out for awhile
August 18th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Speak of the devil
August 18th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Darn, pedro even had a good pitch count threw 3IP with 38 pitches. Not in Philly, anyone know how bad its raining right now and for how long will it continue
August 18th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
I am not watching or in Philly watching it on Gameday, what is the weather looking like? Is it a quick shower or something staying for awhile
August 18th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
I guess its a little disappointing that we won’t be able to see how Pedro would have finished his outing but quite honestly I would rather the rain come down during his start than during Lee, Blanton, or Happ’s. So I’m not too upset.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
Same question, how bad is the rain?
August 18th, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Moyer comes in and we give up 25 runs. GO MOYER YOU OLD GEEZER.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
It looked like a monster storm because the sky was pitch black and there was lightning, wind, you name it. It was also pouring. But knowing how the weather is this time of year, it could just as easily pass over in 20 minutes.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Oh Jeff, already angry and the man hasn’t thrown a pitch. He only threw 6 scoreless innings against these guys his last time out against them so don’t jump off a bridge yet.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
Great rain delay. So i can tune over to NFL network to see thier 25 hour a day coverage of Brent farve. I hope he can lead the league in interceptions again this year.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
Here in KoP, we’ve got severe thunderstorm alerts, but I don’t know how long it’s going to last.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:09 pm
Hmn… I’m looking at the radar maps online. There is a big area of rain, but it’s narrow and looks like it’s moving due east. Still, looks like it might take a while.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
Well one positive is that Moyer usually pitches 5 maybe 6 innings well we don’t need lidge tonight then LOL
August 18th, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Ohh Tracey, KoP, my old stomping grounds!!
August 18th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
I just got home and turned on MLB.TV and since it’s in a delay, can anyone give me a quick run down of what has happened? I’m not in Philly so I have to watch online, and during rain delays, they just show a black screen that says the game is in a delay, so I’m not seeing anything right now. Any help? P-p-p-p-please???
August 18th, 2009 at 8:42 pm
@Matt: Dbacks started with a lead-off HR, but that was the only run. JRoll got a hit, then Victorino, then Utley walked, loading the bases for Howard… who struck out. Werth popped out, Ibanez grounded out. Martinez did much quicker work for us in the 2nd and 3rd, but the Phils didn’t score anything in the 2nd and the rain delay started in the middle of the 3rd.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
@Tracey-Thanks a lot, I was trying to piece it together from the comments but wasn’t having much luck.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
The rain seems to be easing here in KoP, so it may not be much longer.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
(looking at radar map) Looks like the worst of it has left the ballpark area. If they don’t start playing now, they’re not going to get the game in tonight.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
This rain delay sucks big time… especially since Pedro just had a 6-pitch 2nd inning, and a 10-pitch 3rd inning….
August 18th, 2009 at 8:58 pm
Well the Mets now have an 8-4 lead over the Braves…Game should be starting in a few minutes.
August 18th, 2009 at 8:59 pm
WOO HOO! Apparently they heard me — game has resumed!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
OH BABY!!! TIE GAME!!!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:07 pm
good old bad fielding by the d-backs
August 18th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
Atta Boy Werth!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
FELIZ!!!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:10 pm
great hit pedro, but what a little league throw
August 18th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
Of course Utley was on first so still no knocks with RISP. Same old Phils, haha.
That left-fielder is an absolute dumba$$ btw.
PETE HAPPY DELIVERS! Someone didn’t give Garland/Hinch the memo that Raul has been struggling…..
August 18th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
BATS COME ALIVE!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:11 pm
i suppose moyer will come in for pedro
August 18th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
Ah CMON, he was safe wasn’t he?
August 18th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
But Feliz gets greedy and ends the inning…. who was that in the dugout giving Feliz the “WTF” look?
August 18th, 2009 at 9:13 pm
Still the right move to send Pete Happy there because The Turd was on deck. Obviously nothing positive was going to happen there.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:14 pm
with 2 outs and the way the d-backs field and bruntlett on deck why not go for it
August 18th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Can i get a replay on that play at the plate or not?
August 18th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
well its nice to have moyer here
August 18th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
the rain delay sucked…pedro was pitching so well!! he was dealing in the 2nd, 3rd inning.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
@Miles: Good point, Bruntlett wasn’t going to get him home.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
I still hope we get a infielder utility man like maybe Nomar or Jamie Carroll
August 18th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
@NoVa: don’t encourage the haters.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Good things…..Charlie can’t get too greedy with Jamie, though. If he gets us through another inning I would go right to Chan Ho. Can I get a second on that?
August 18th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
6 pitches
August 18th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
Hey, if he keeps pitching these 6-pitch innings, he can stay in as long as he wants!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
And a single! Woo hoo!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
And Moyer goes to 3rd! He’s playing like he’s got something to prove. Too bad our big bats couldn’t do anything with it.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Dangit I really wanted to get Jamie in there….that would have been a legendary run right there. Now he’s just tired for no reason…..haha.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
hehe go moyer
August 18th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
garland really has to appreciate defense independent pitching statistics…and he’s a ground ball pitcher. I guess it doesn’t help when the he commits an error on a routine ground ball hit by the opposing pitcher
August 18th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Oh good grief, that is the stupidest stat I’ve ever heard.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Was it an error j reed? I missed it….I thought someone said it was a single.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:32 pm
What? they gave Moyer a hit….no offense to moyer but Garland should had fielded that…
August 18th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
it was an error
August 18th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
Wooo go Moyer… keep playing like that and take your job back if you want.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
It was initially ruled an error, but changed to a hit. Meanwhile: Moyer has only 20 pitches.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Aw…. that looked so good…
August 18th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Moyer is dealing
August 18th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
WERTH!!!!!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
way to be patient there Howard
August 18th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Werth has dealt
August 18th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
WOO HOO!!!! JAYSON WERTH!!!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
miles: I thought it was “fieldable” and esp considering Garland is a sinkerballer and usually induces groundballs I’d think he should be a good fielder but I haven’t checked his fielding stats. Well he didn’t get a groundball that time…way to go Mr. Werth
August 18th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
I’ve got a song running through my head: “Raindrops keep falling on my mike…”
August 18th, 2009 at 9:44 pm
Why is it that Garland could come back out and Pedro couldn’t? The rain delay was not that long.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
Jamie Moyer retiring 9 straight.. woahza
August 18th, 2009 at 9:48 pm
Everyone who frequents this site knows that I am a Moyer enthusiast so I just want to take a second to bask in my 3 scoreless innings of glory right now. And to tell Jeff to eat his words.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
Hats off to Jaime! He earned the W!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:49 pm
Got to hand it to Moyer, he’s dealing in the pen.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
RUIZ!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOCH
August 18th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCH
August 18th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Ruiz? Really? Damn, put Bruntlett out there, he might get something…
…maybe not.
But hell yeah Ruiz, our bats are heating up!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
And Jamie…2 for 2? Whatretheodds?
August 18th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Wow going to the bullpen got Moyer amped up big time. Hopefully we can sustain this lead and Lidge won’t have to pitch.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
Shoot I thought Charlie would pull him hopefully I don’t have to reverse my earlier gloating.
Or maybe he was just using him to pinch hit! Boom goes the dynamite!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
now that was a base hit….Good work Mr. Moyer and Mr. Ruiz
August 18th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
hahaha, Jamie’s on fire!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Six man rotation?
I can live with it. Pedro throws a few hard ones, Jamie comes in for a few and changes the speed up a bit.
Tonight’s probably a fluke, though.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Tonight is not a fluke, but Arizona is the type of team that Jamie can do well against…a team with little to no patience at the plate. Much like the Marlins.
You can’t go with a 6 man rotation because then our good pitchers, Lee, Happ and Blanton will pitch less often.
August 18th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Alright, we can’t strand the pitcher on 3rd again…that’s be 3 times to many
August 18th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
I love this phucking team!
August 18th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Diamondbacks are a young, agressive team. Moyer thives against those teams.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
the dbacks are the Nats of the West
August 18th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Diamondbacks are a young, agressive team. Moyer thrives against those teams.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Howard is up 2x with bases loaded tonight and less than 2 outs and 2 strike outs. HIT THE FLIPPING BALL IN THE AIR!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Just when I thought Rhyno was getting hot….
August 18th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
Actually I think that’s the 4th time since the game Blanton pitched against the Giants that we’ve stranded out pitcher at third.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
Its amazing they walk Utley to get to Howard. He strikes out. He is great with nobody on. Jason the same thing. WOW.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
Gramps!!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
>You can’t go with a 6 man rotation because then our good pitchers, Lee, Happ and Blanton will pitch less often.
Well, I guess I meant PEdro and Jamie just splitting the duty with Pedro doing most of the work, I guess.
I didn’t mean starting a sixth guy. Point of clarification
August 18th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
Weth/Howard 13 men left on base
Ridiculous not going to win any championship with that crap
August 18th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
Just when you think howard may be ready to break out.
If he has discipline he can be the best player of all time.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
Jaime for ASHBURN!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Lets win the game before we start talking Ashburn awards
August 18th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Looks like Jamie Moyer wants back in the rotation bad.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Charlie is gonna leave Jaime in. And Jaime will nail it shut!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Go Moyer! Go Moyer! Looking good!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
@Jeff of Nova……actually you CAN win a championship like that, even though I wouldn’t recommend it. We won WS game 1 going 0-13 with RISP and I think we ended up winning that series hitting something like 7-50 with RISP. So it can be done. And unfortunately this team strikes out a lot but also hits solo shots that often make up for the lack of a sac fly or RBI groundout or whatever.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Aw, rats. I was sure that would be his 5th HR in 5 games~
August 18th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Howard! looked like a homer at first.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Guess he’ll have to hit 2 tomorrow
August 18th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Man everybody is back on the Moyer bandwagon already….I missed Geoff’s commentary tonight because I’m sure he would have found a way to turn what Jamie did tonight into a negative thing.
Well tonight’s game proved that this sure is a bizarre sport. I mean, its not everyday you have a bullpen guy throw the 4th through the 9th. I bet Jamie hasn’t pitched in the ninth inning for years.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Moyer knows he doesn’t want to put too many guys on or they will bring in Lidge. That would be painful.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
well if you don’t have a dependable closer you probably can’t get away with such bad RISP numbers in the post season
August 18th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
This is so beautiful….let’s nail it down in the win column.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
Two things from tonight’s game:
1) Moyer should close for us. He couldn’t be worse than Lidge.
2) Howard sucks. What “slugger” can’t hit a high fastball? None. He has popped up every single one. Yes it is a very high popup, but still a popup. You can’t even argue that because the last one was on the warning track that it was well hit. They’re playing at home. The right field wall is like 3 feet away from home plate. How disappointing to see Howard suck this bad after having a good last game.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
YES!!! OLD GUYS RULE!!!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Congrats Moyer!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
And now my friends….we have a little competition for that 5th spot. Nothing makes you pitch well like a little pressure, eh? Pedro, meet Jamie Moyer’s middle finger. Let’s see if you can respond and match his performance your next time out. That would be a beautiful thing.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
Nice job Moyer!!!
August 18th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
HIGH HOPES~~~
August 18th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
well technically he’s a reliever and for 25 years he’s thrown 5 plus innings alot more than 1 or 2 innings
August 18th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Hmmmm sorry Alex, Howard doesn’t suck. He sucked tonight. Big difference. He just won us two games against our main threat in the division right now so let’s not start pissing and moaning after a nice win.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
@j reed. Great point about the back end of the bullpen. You definitely need one or the other. I guess that means its time to start getting those guys in from third.
August 18th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Well, add the Diamondbacks to the list (along with the Marlins) of the teams that can call Moyer “Daddie.”
August 18th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
@miles – yeah If its not psychological and I’m not certain it is, then were in trouble as I don’t believe there is anyone in the organization who can fix Lidge’s mechanics because who ever is in charge of this has had more than enough time to do so…Hopefully things will work out but I feel like we’ll have to slug our way to another title at least this year anyway . Maybe Myers is the answer…I don’t know
August 18th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Dave – has moyer ever pitched against the pirates….now Sanchez and Wilson are gone I wonder how he’d match up with them as the Pirates are another smal market team that smoked too much of the prospect pipe.
August 18th, 2009 at 11:04 pm

so great to see moyer come in and contribute like that after all the uncertainty around him and his role with the team of late. there are a lot of games in not that many days down the stretch… they’re going to need every arm they’ve got.

the frustrating inconsistency of Howard continues. HE just got absolutey overmatched by two less than mediocre pitchers with the bases loaded. Let’s face it, he’s made little or no progress in 2 years. His pitch recognition is horrible.

i’m glad the game didn’t get postponed….we already have enough make-ups that were gonna have 3 double headers in a 47 game span… that’s why we really need an viable utility guy so our starters can get rest for possible post season play

teejvee -I wonder how much pitch recognition can be taught ….its perception speed and speed in general is difficult to develop though I am not certain if it is as difficult to develop as something like arm speed, bat speed or sprinting speed all of which invovles increasing the of fast twitch muscle fibers in muscles that would be used…Even still he could learn how to guess better by knowing a pitcher’s tendencies….However the analytical approach is not something I see often from the Phillies.
