Gameday: Phillies (59-43) At Giants (57-47)
Posted by Amanda Orr, Sun, August 02, 2009 03:35 PM
Philadelphia Phillies (59-43) at San Francisco Giants (57-47)
Cole Hamels (7-5, 4.42 ERA) vs. Barry Zito (6-10, 4.54 ERA)
Time: 4:05 p.m at AT&T Park
Weather: Partly Cloudy, 66
TV: MYPHL 17/ TBS
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The Phillies will try to even the series in the four game finale. The Phillies will send Cole Hamels to the mound, who has shown that he is a second half pitcher.
In his past five starts, Hamels is 3-0 with a 2.45 earned run average. In addition, he has thrown at least seven innings in two consecutive outings. It is very key for Hamels to go deep into a game, something the Phillies starters have been doing a lot lately.
Hamels will be opposed by Barry Zito, who has had an up and down year. There is no doubt that Zito is not the same pitcher he was in 2002 when he won the American League Cy Young award with the Oakland Athletics. He never lived up to his expectations when he signed a seven year, $126 million contract with the Giants in 2006. Zito is 2-1 with a 3.50 ERA in his career against the Phillies.
The Phillies need to start hitting with runners in scoring position. On the road trip, the Phils are hitting .103 (6-for-56) with RISP.

This beer, popular in the Czech Republic, and is named in honor of the king of Flanders. He is unofficially known as the patron saint (or dare I say, King) of beers. The beer however is a little less dramatic. The well-balanced light pilsner pours a rich head with a full golden color. It’s good enough to drink all night, maybe with some Chinese food. – By Brian

Do I watch the horrible chris wheeler the worst broadcaster in sports. That includes all sports.
or
the wonderful krukow and kiper who are the best in the business on the SF feed?
I am a phillies fan. sucks that our announcer is this terrible.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:05 pm
nooooo, Bruntlett is playing
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Batty Zito the king of the skells
Probably a gem here.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Andrew, I live in Northern Cal, and I’ve never been a big fan of Krukow and Kuiper, but they have gotten much better now that Bonds is gone.
If Bruntlett doesn’t get a hit today, he should get cut.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:13 pm
I havent checked the line up card. Bruntlett in? Can only hope that Bako is in also.
attack of the killer Bs
Sf and arizona are my favorite announcer teams.
I dont like Vin scully solo. I do despise the mets idiots also.
Oh I am gonna get it now!
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Bruntlett should hit some homeruns today and have us like him
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:20 pm
That little technical difficulty on the commercial break was weird…
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:26 pm
I don’t always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Dos Equis
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Maybe Cole could throw a few more right down the middle of the plate…is he even trying?
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Well, i hope our offense came to play today.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Yeah, the pitching is off to an ugly start, and the bats haven’t done much yet. This don’t look pretty.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Trust me Barry Zito is gonna throw a gem today. Phils will lose. If Phillies face us in playoffs doesn’t matter if Phils have home field advantage, giants are gonna destroy. Their pitching is too dominant. As much as Phils hit HRs thats how many they strike out in a game. Rocks swept phils in 07 and lost in WS. Giants are gonna sweep phils in 09 and win WS. 1-2-3 inning for Zito in 3rd. Bruntlett, Ruiz and Hamels = Average of .167BA. Wow. stinkers
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:40 pm
OK, good damage control, now let’s do some damage of our own.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:41 pm
why do i get the feeling the Phils wont comeback from this 1-0 deficit
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:42 pm
WOW a SF troll?
please god let us play the giants in the playoffs.
At least bruntlett didnt strike out.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Zito is maybe the worst SP in the majors. So yes with how the phils are he will probably throw a gem. He still sucks though and in the playoffs I will be loving to face him.
Timmy different story. Hes great.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Martin way to pick averages from our worst player, our best hitting pitcher, and our catcher… Killer stat dude. Idiot
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Never mud wrestle with a pig. You both end up covered in filth, but the pig enjoys it.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Stranding ROwan on 3rd may just cost the Giants this game.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:53 pm

Boom! Rollins – tie game.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:54 pm
As JROLL goes, so go the Phils. A late start, but a spectacular one. Let’s see some more of that!
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:54 pm
improbably, barry zito gives up a run!!!!!!!!!!!! this is history, folks. hopefully martin will be our guide
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:56 pm
man when you hit a home run in this park you should get 1.5 runs. nice work mr rollins
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Howard’s at bats are not pretty.
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:58 pm
barry zito can kiss my booty. i’d be more scared of a nat’s pitcher….
August 2nd, 2009 at 4:58 pm
I might have missed it, is Raul just resting? It looks like the entire offense needs a rest – but I feel a W today.
Hopefully, Raul and Victorino will be back in town this week…
I miss em’
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Oh man who wouldn’t love to see Raul at bat right here
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:00 pm
WHEW! lucky one Chase!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Yes, just resting for Raul, but Victorino had a minor injury.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Isn’t Vic day to day?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:02 pm

August 2nd, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Wohooo!!! One more run!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:02 pm
OH BABY!!! PHILS TAKE THE LEAD!!!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Hahaha great defense by the Giants
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:03 pm
DAMN IT!!!!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Oops. But Phils are ahead.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Um…why was Werth trying to steal there?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:03 pm
WTF was that? Never make the first or third out at 3rd…why was Werth running?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:07 pm
nighty night, giants
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:09 pm
FYI: The Giants announcers on the radio are not certain that Werth was out there.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:13 pm
He looked safe but either way, if you are trying to steal 3rd with 2 outs then it better not be a question as to whether you were safe or not.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Ed r. – werth’s been reading the National’s play book in his off time
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:14 pm

August 2nd, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Wow, if even Bruntlett can hit like that, Giants are in trouble…
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Wow, and he ran FAST!!!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:17 pm
wow, i hate to be negative but it’s a rare day in my book that bruntlett does something right, but he’s doing alright today! and WELCOME BACK RUIZ!!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Yikes… who told Bruntlett to run? He got lucky.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Bruntlett is available in 100% of yahoo fantasy leagues. Get him while you can.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:18 pm
well hopefully this can turn it around for chooch
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:18 pm
Choochster!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:21 pm
what was martin saying about the deadly combo of bruntlett and ruiz
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Bruntlett’s avg. just skyrocketed to .133!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:24 pm
10 in a row for Cole!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:25 pm
Bruntlett is telling Bako that he’s better
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Jinxed!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:27 pm

August 2nd, 2009 at 5:27 pm
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Has anyone mentioned sending cole to the pen?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:28 pm
I hate this damn park
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Wow Velez was flying around those bases.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:28 pm
the power of the bloop
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:28 pm
He had two outs.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
are u kidding me right now
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
oh crap….
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
OMG!! WTF Howard!! Falling apart
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
i cant watch this sh*t
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:29 pm
JESUS HOWARD>>> TAKE A NAP
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:30 pm
sending cole to the pen isn’t necessary. he’s been fine. besides, if he went anywhere it would be down for a few weeks. and we all know that’s not happening.
btw, we all need to start praying, we’re down a run now… damnit howard…no good
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Well that was just a terrible play by Howard…is he kidding with that crap? He better knock one out of the park later to make up for that.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:30 pm
And the freaking Panda boy almost killed Hamels on the basepath
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:30 pm
This was suppose to be a 1 2 3 inning. All this happen with two outs!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Ryan was having a Keith Hernandez moment. Anytime you get Hamels and Howard wrapped up in the same defensive play you know its gonna end up poorly.
The Dipsy
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Jesus, I just came in from working outside and WTF? Think I’ll go right back out, dammit.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:32 pm
cole to the pen i thought was an obvious joke
but i do hear people talk about happ to the pen which to me is equally absurd.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:32 pm
thank god we’re done with that inning. i’m going to kung fu fight that f’n kung fu panda if he ever gets that close to cole again.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:33 pm
i cringed when i heard sanchez was in the game to day
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:33 pm
I hope he doesnt mistake him for a chicken wing or cole is in trouble
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Phils need some home cookin’ real bad. Let’s hope we can escape with a W. Sheez.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Hamels has been getting killed by the bloop hit all year. He really hasn’t been hit hard. If it wasn’t for that ridiculous ‘triples alley’ this game would be much different.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:34 pm
I dont know about Cole being fine. A lot of people, myself included blast Moyer for what he has done this year, or not done, and ERA wise, they are about even. Heck, Moyer has more wins than Cole. Honestly Cole has been a huge disappointment this year.
I am glad we traded for Lee, now we have one ace rather than none.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:34 pm
geez i sware that velez guy is the king of bloops
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:34 pm
can we have bloop hits now?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:35 pm
i have a feeling happ will go to the pen when pedro comes up then after pedro consistantly only gets thru 5 there will be a switch-a-roo and we’ll get our happ back
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:36 pm
Not sure how you can say Cole hasn’t been getting hit hard all year, he has given up 18 home runs. That’s hit pretty hard.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:36 pm
I keep comparing this team to a Balloon…and right now they are absolutely 100% deflated.
I can’t believe this crap sometimes…its a good thing they were so hot because right now they are really really cold.
I mean COME ON Cole, 2 outs with the PITCHER up and you do that?! I thought he would be pissed that hes not the ace anymore and go out and be a stud, instead this happens.
Ugh, well you can’t win um all….
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:37 pm
OK Ryan, time to make up for that error in the last inning. Hit one into the giant glove for me.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:37 pm
Howard is a HR away from the Howard
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 pm
(SIGH!!!)
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Howard looks HORRIBLE!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 pm
I REALLY JUST WANT TO SCREAM!!!!!!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:39 pm
1. there is a quality start for barry skell zito
2. howard is killing me. he needs to get hot like he normaly does in the second half
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:39 pm
all ryan does is K…what a surprise
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:40 pm
you have to give Ryan that-when he looks bad, he looks REALLLLLY bad.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:40 pm
Cholly should have rest Howard. He did it for Raul.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:40 pm
I bet 75% of those home runs have been solo shots. He’s a fly ball pitcher and has and always will give up home runs but all this dink and dunk crap has been his bugaboo this year.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Sad, Sad baseball at its best.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Cole is getting hit. This game might be over.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:43 pm
maybe charlie will sit ryan for a couple games like he did with jimmy…hopefully
what is going on with cole??
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:43 pm
cole stinks his ERa is higher than zitos now.
but lets take happ out of the rotation LOL our best pitcher all year
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Awful, get Hamels out.
I’ll be happy to see the Phillies leave SF, this has been a bad series except for Lee’s start.
And this is why I hope the Phils don’t face the Giants in the post season.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:44 pm
ok old man how much is enough?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Alright, Cole… bring your A game next time, please
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Hamels sucks today
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:45 pm
ok, that’s it for me, back outside, not even going to turn the radio on…
I’m looking forward to reading all your comments later, so remember to add some comic relief, just to mix it up a little.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Joe Blanton pitched better yesterday. Looked like a number two. Could have won the game if the offense did something. oh look, Cole gives up another run.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:45 pm
Rockies are gonna beat the Giants out
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:46 pm
I really do not want to have to face this team in the playoffs if we get there.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:46 pm
i am so pissed off. how can you go from being so good to being so bad. pathetic. and i have to listen to the giants announcers rubbing it in
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Bases loaded.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:47 pm
holy shit. make the bleeding stop charlie!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:47 pm
Too many innings for Cole, last year… and too many magazine covers
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Glad that Zito is coming out, Giants don’t have a great bullpen.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Imagine if we win another series Cole will be completely worthless
Dude if i see you on HBO on another red carpet and you are continuing to suck you will be on my no longer like list.
Concentrate on baseball.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:49 pm
giants commentators are dumb asses.
park has gotten us out of a lot of jams since he’s been in the ‘pen. LET’S GO PARK!!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:50 pm
I hate/love that they bring Harry’s sport coat w/them everywhere. i tear up each time they talk about him. rip……oh and harry, GET ON THESE BOYS FOR PLAYING LIKE THIS!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:50 pm
Well this is a wake up call for the Phillies. They aren’t as good as they think they are, and if they want to get back to what they are supposed to be theyre going to have to hit good pitching like they used to be able to.
Cole Hamels has been a complete failure this season. Who knows, there are dozens of potential reasons.
The Phillies better come from behind and win this game to earn a split.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
the staffs current rankings
1. lee
2. blanton
3. happ
4 .moyer
5. Mr. GQ photo shoot
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
This loss will be a hard pill to swallow. But lets not go off the deep in here. The Phillies are the defending Champs and at min will have a 5 game lead in the divisiongoing into next week. Things could be whole lot worse. Just asks the sports fans in Cleveland or Buffalo.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
The Phil as a whole look off. Monday could not come soon enough for them. They need a day off. Let’s go Chan Ho.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:55 pm
the phils are the best team in the national league
the best teams lose 60 games
We all know this phils team can go 2 weeks without scoring etc etc
i predict they will be fine. SF has the best record at home in baseball they are built for that huge stadium, They have good pitching
ok this is over 7-3
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:56 pm
L.A. says, “Are you kiddin’ me?” Amen to that.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:56 pm
How can the Phils be getting beat by this Valez guy?
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:57 pm
And it all started with a hit from the pitcher…
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:57 pm
the giants aren’t even good offensively…they shouldn’t have 7 runs…nice job cole
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:58 pm
I dont think we should over reaect either. But this had better be a wake up call to the team that you cant cruise around out there against good teams.
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:58 pm
There’s no crying in baseball? Say’s who!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:58 pm
Let’s not forget: we have come back from a 7-3 deficit before. LET’S GO PHILS!
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:59 pm
I remember the phillies dominating the dodgers last year. Who did the dodgers add orlando hudson?
the phils added Lee and Ibanez.
I guarentee we do not lose to LA in the playoffs. No shot.
These teams can beat the phils in a playoff series
the cardinals, red sox and yankees
the end
August 2nd, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Can’t believe how easily Cole gets rattled…. He gets 10 guys out in a row, then gives up a hit by the pitcher… but instead of brushing it off, he completely falls apart.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:00 pm
The Phils have been in a funk these past couple of games. It is frustrating. Offense has been HORRIBLE on this road trip.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:02 pm
I like your spirit Tracey. I’d join you, but I’m out of beer. Maybe I should go outside and pretend that I’m breaking into my own house so I can get a couple of free ones on the Whitehouse. Somebody call 911!
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:06 pm
Whee!
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:06 pm
let’s go Bruntlett!
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:06 pm
This is embarrasing. The Giants offense is horrible. I keep saying trade Howard. To late with that big money. All he does is strike out. Once in a while he hits a homer. He is not fun to watch. Cole always falls apart when something bothers him. Like that Zito hit. You need to get the pitcher out in that spot. 3-4 road trip. This is aweful. Moyer on the mound next. BOOOOOM
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:08 pm
no trading Howard, trade Jeff
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:08 pm
The Phils got a base runner. Somebody turn up the Superman music!
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Oh good grief. Feliz should have been able to tag and get to 2nd there.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Except for Cliff Lee’s win, a lost weekend for the Phils. If the Giants do not have the Phillies attention, they might after this series is over. Historically, the Phillies have never really played well in San Francisco. Hamels just does not seem to have that “fire” when he pitches. Looks like he goes out there thinking, “Oh well, just another start, another game, another day at the ballpark.”
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Are you crazy keith. His production goes down every year. My buddy is a Giants fan and he loves when Howard comes to the plate. He says YES PUT THE K ON THE BOARD.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:09 pm
blah
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:09 pm
argh
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:10 pm
Phillies will be fine with the Giants, they’ll take them down in Philly.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Ok Keith. There pitching will come back in and make Howard there Biatch again. Kane, The Freak…Do you realize the Phillies cant hit good pitching. Howard looks like he has no clue.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:12 pm
howard carried the team sept last year
he swings at crap so the pitchers throw him crap
its a slippery slope
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:14 pm
Hamels looks like he wants to be on Survivor 10 with his movie star wife.
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:16 pm
Jeffie
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Everyone needs to calm the f down!
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:18 pm
The Lovely Bones is a very good book
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Has anybody read it?
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:20 pm
No, I meant the theme song for “A Great American Hero.” Look at what just happened to me-eeeee. I can’t believe it myself. I get a two out and then the Phillies collaspe. And now I’m about to get just my 7th win of year! Believe or not, I’m not really this good. But the Phils hitters keep on appeasing meeee.” Barry Zito
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:20 pm
I am a panda bear
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:21 pm
I feed on pitching
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:21 pm
I will get you guys in the middle of the night
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:22 pm

August 2nd, 2009 at 6:22 pm
I will wake up to tell you that you won’t win
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:24 pm
I will f the panda up
August 2nd, 2009 at 6:25 pm

National’s Fan…. Only if Bud creates a “special” two team division with you and the Mets. And based on how he handled Game 5, he might be just stupid enough to make it happen.

The Phils never play well in San Fran. But this whole road trip the writing has been on the wall that the team needs a rest.

The Giants would trade places with us in a heart beat. Let’s see a World Series Title in 2008, and in 1st place again in 2009 in a semi-weak division. Or the Giants who are 0 for San Fran. Who are also in a hopeless chase of the Dodgers, in a dogfight with CO and like 5 others for a wild card spot and have the worst O in the NL. I’m torn? Congrats on the series win Giants fans, but you still have to come to Philly. We are gonna kick your @sses!

Eli….. Why are u afraid of the wind? Your D won that Game. And Plax was wide open. Although nice spin move. But u got lucky that Sam didn’t pick that pass off and take it to the house. The Yanks can’t beat Boston and the Mets are scared of their own *ucking farm staff. Nearly 2 billion spent on two 2 stadiums for 2 losers.
August 2nd, 2009 at 7:01 pm
I just owned Eli.

Maybe if the Phillies beat the Giants in Philly in September, they will help keep the Giants from making the playoffs. The key for the Giants will be how they play on the road from here on out and away from their home ballpark which is a big advantage for them and their pitching staff. They have one of the best records at home but one of the worst on the road, 21-31, and the worst road record of all the teams in the playoff hunt. Might have the best pitching of all of those teams but probably the weakest offense too. Will really have to rely on their pitching.

Brandi… I did play soccer in high school. Scored 1 freakin goal in 2yrs of playing mid-fielder/L-Wing. I know…. Pathetic….. But the mental scares remain. So be nice. Thanks for the invite, but no San Fran for me.

Go Phillies Go Phillies Go Go
August 2nd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Howard is definitely the choice for the Jeltz today with Hamels coming in a close second with his poor outing today and giving up a hit to the pitcher which got the ball rolling for the Giants. Power outage week for the Phillies this past week but will have to turn it around for the hard hitting Rockies and Marlins coming to CBP this week.
August 2nd, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Phillies can do it
