Gameday: Phillies (70-50) At Mets (57-66)

Posted by Amanda Orr, Sun, August 23, 2009 12:15 PM

Philadelphia Phillies (70-50) at New York Mets (57-66)

Pedro Martinez (1-0, 4.50 ERA) vs. Oliver Perez (3-3, 6.06 ERA)

Time:1:10 p.m at Citi Field
Weather: Mostly Cloudy, 78
TV: MY PHL17
Twitter: Phillies Nation

Pedro Martinez will be making his first start against his former team.  Martinez spent four season in New York, winning 32 games and posting a 3.88 ERA.  Pedro’s last outing was cut short due to a rain delay.

Pedro will be opposed by Oliver Perez.  Perez is 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA in 13 starts against the Phillies.  Sometimes Oliver Perez will dominate.  Other times he will get lit up.  Perez faced the Phillies earlier this year and lasted 1/3 of an inning.  He gave up four runs on five hits and six walks.

Chase Utley will not be in today’s lineup, recieving a day off against the left-hander.  Lefties are hitting .205 against Perez this season.  Eric Bruntlett will start at second base.

Philadelphia Original LagerYour Gameday Beer – Philadelphia Original Lager
Brewed by Red Bell Brewery out of the Brewerytown neighborhood of Philadelphia, this beer is a classic microbrew lager. It’s a bit heavier than Yuengling, with more of a roasted malt flavor and some sweet coffee and caramel hints. Its supreme drinkability coupled with a pour that looks like iced tea means you can sneakily house several of these bad boys. Sundays are pasta days so have your favorite strand with some marinara sauce and a few Philly Lagers. – By Brian

Greg Dobbs is on the 15 Day, Miguel Cairo has been called up to replace him. He should be starting at 2nd! Sorry, I am part of ABB (Anybody But Bruntlett).

  2. nick Says:

hey- anybody know where I can go online to watch today’s game???

  3. Jeff@Chuckien'Petes Says:

Speaking of bad liars….remeber this on for Cole Hamels
In August 2006, Phillies pitcher Cole Hamels tried using a pair of pliers to open a plastic bag filled with new kitchen utensils. When that tactic failed, Hamels opted for a Swiss Army knife, and his ham-handedness resulted in an inch-long gash on his left index finger.

Hamels tried to seal the wound with super glue, but lost the feel for his changeup and was shelled for nine runs in an 11-2 loss to the Cubs. Several days later, Hamels shared his story with the team’s beat reporters.

“That’s the lesson my parents have been teaching me: Don’t ever cut with a knife up,” Hamels said. “Everybody knows that. You learn that in Boy Scouts.” ….so how bad can it be for Meyers…he changed his poor story only 3 times….should have crazy glue his mouth shut….Philly players “crazy glue” don’t leave home with out it!

  4. PGD Says:

nothing makes me happier than seeing eric bruntlett in the phillies lineup

  5. joedad Says:

Nick, MLB.com would be the only place. Not sure if they have blackouts however.

  6. Ed R. Says:

Is something wrong with Utley? Why in God’s name would you sit him when he is in the middle of an 8-17 hot streak? You can say its because Perez is a Lefty but his home run last night was vs a lefty. Especially when you are playing E.B. Fun fact, you add E.B and Ruiz averages together and its 260…AWESOME!!

  7. Ed R. Says:

    I lied…it’s 360, not 260…

  8. Tracey Says:

@Joedad: yes, MLB.com’s feed of the game is blacked out in the Philly and NYC areas. You can see it out of town, though.

  9. Tracey Says:

This guy has 25 pitches already, without a single out! He’ll be finished in 1 inning at this rate!

  10. Stuart Says:

Anyone know what radio station the game is on? I am heading out of Ocean City to head back home and want to listen as much as i can.

  11. Ed R. Says:

WAY TO GO WERTH!!!! Nothing like ending a 13 pitch at bat with a bomb. He must golf in the off season.

  12. Tracey Says:

    WOO HOO!! WERTH HR!!!

  13. Phan in TN Says:

    bwaaaaaaaa hahaha

    *snort*

almost hit one of the two Mets fans there.

  14. Ed R. Says:

    1210 maybe?

  15. Tracey Says:

    Yes, radio is 1210.

  16. Ed R. Says:

I love how they keep talking about Perez and his bad contract and pretend like we didn’t sign Adam Eaton to a disgusting contract not long ago and released him after 2 years.

  17. Tracey Says:

41 pitches. No wonder they have somebody warming up

  18. Tracey Says:

@Ed: they’ve obviously blocked out the memory.

  19. Tracey Says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  20. joedad Says:

    Fugetaboutit

  21. Ed R. Says:

    CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCCCCCCCCCCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Unbelievable!!

  22. Tracey Says:

I was just about to make a joke: “remind me what happened last time we had runners at 1st and 2nd?” And sure enough, he did it!

  23. DJ Says:

    CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOCH!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Paul Says:

    YES!!! Nice cushion for Pedro!!!

  25. Phan in TN Says:

    karma

    need I say more?

  26. Tracey Says:

Wow… is that some kind of record, a starting pitcher gets pulled after .2 innings without being injured?

  27. Paul Says:

    Is Perez hurt or something?

  28. joedad Says:

Reminds me of tom Glavine in the last game of 2007. How could we forget?

  29. Tracey Says:

Admittedly, he had like 75 pitches.

  30. Keeg Says:

Being taken out in the first inning after giving up 6 ER and going 3-0 to the pitcher…absolutely priceless.

For everything else, there’s kicking the Mets’ A$$

  31. Havoc Says:

Unbelievable Perez gone after 2/3 of an inning! This is fantastic! I love that the mets are stuck with his contract. Oh yeah Paul he’s not hurt he just sucks! lol

  32. Keeg Says:

Tracey, the 22-1 Reds game, Cueto was taken out after a third of an inning, he gave up 6 too i think, or maybe more…10? But i’m not sure if it turned out he was injured…

  33. Terri Says:

WTH!! I hope we can keep this lead!!

  34. Keeg Says:

Why…didn’t Chollie argue that? That seems to be…really really iffy.

  35. Ed R. Says:

Explain to me why that play wasn’t dead the second Victorino put his arms in the air to signify that the ball was stuck under the wall? Ibanez was right to pick it up after the umpires decided to pretend like nothing even happened. F*cking idiots.

  36. Phan in TN Says:

    no problem

we can beat the Mets and their umps

    cheaters never prosper

  37. GWFightinsFan Says:

WTF?? Why did the umps not call that dead??

  38. Ed R. Says:

Seriously why didn’t Charlie get up to argue? I don’t get that at all.

  39. Ed R. Says:

Well I am about done with Pedro.

  40. Keeg Says:

Wow. Pedro is doing almost as bad as Ollie did.

  41. Terri Says:

goodness the Mets are rallying back.

  42. Phan in TN Says:

as long as we get them swinging at stupid shit, we’ll be okay

  43. CZ Says:

This has to be pretty emotional for Pedro. The Mets announcers are saying the first time he went back to Boston as a Met he gave up 8 runs…

  44. Miles Says:

I’m gonna save my judgement on Pedro until his entire outing is finished but what he is doing right now is rule number 1 on the list of things not to do after getting a big lead. He let them right back in this game. First pitch fastball to Franceour? I guess he and Chooch decided to ignore the scouting report there.

  45. Havoc Says:

I remain on the fence with Pedro. We’ll see how he does, Moyer should be ready today if we need him.

  46. Tracey Says:

Pedro’s last start (with the rain) was rough in the 1st, but solid for the next 2 innings (until the rain delay). Looks like the same today.

  47. CZ Says:

Bruntlett 2 for 2 !!!!!!!!!!! He should play the lottery!

  48. Tracey Says:

OH BABY!!! PEDRO HITS WITH AN RBI!

  49. DJ Says:

I think if pedro can go 6 with only giving up 2 runs then thats a great outing. His Era is deceptive because he gave up that 1 run last outing but only pitched 3 innings because of the rain.

  50. Tracey Says:

    Argh.

  51. Manny Says:

    Moyer’s knocking on Pedro’s door.

  52. Tracey Says:

Interesting note: Marlins and Braves are tied for second place now, 6.5 games out, and they’re playing each other, so no matter what happens today, we can’t have more than a 6.5 game lead. (we can drop to 5.5 if we lose, though)

  53. DJ Says:

Ok I’m starting to get suspect with him. He is throwing meatballs by gamecast over the middle of the plate. Pagan has been killing the Phillies pitching this series but a Home run? idk

  54. Manny Says:

    Warm up Moyer!!

  55. Terri Says:

Pedro’s done. They are hitting him around.

  56. Tracey Says:

DJ: That wasn’t a HR. That was a GRD, but the umpire didn’t call it that way.

  57. Tracey Says:

Oops… sorry, other one was an HR.

  58. DJ Says:

I can’t see the game, Does he look emotional out there? Or is he trying to hard?

  59. Tracey Says:

(didn’t realize that was Pagan again; these announcers have been making such a big deal about that inside the park HR)

  60. Tracey Says:

@DJ: He doesn’t look particularly emotional to me. Not happy, of course, but under control.

  61. winks tiddley Says:

Pedro Martinez stinks. He is done. Rodrigo Lopez is much better and so is Jamie. Send him packing.

  62. Miles Says:

That better be it for Pedro….I’ve seen enough today

  63. DJ Says:

Well I guess he better get it under control then.

  64. Tracey Says:

@winks: I don’t think Martinez is *that* bad, but I keep thinking, “we demoted Moyer for *this*???”

  65. Miles Says:

Btw Tracey the umps called it correctly. The ground rules at Shiti state that a ball under the padding is still a live ball. Someone obviously didn’t inform Shane of that.

  66. Craig Says:

How’s about a Pedro / Moyer tag team?

    Woot!

  67. Tracey Says:

@Miles: that’s an unusual rule. Most parks where the ball can get under the padding, that’s a GRD, and the thing was obviously stuck (I watched the replay).

  68. DJ Says:

WTF the beard is 3 for 3!!!

  69. Miles Says:

Oh my God…..The Beard has awoken from his slumber. Is it even possible for a guy who has been on a roster all year to raise his average this much in one game? It has to be a record….

  70. Miles Says:

Tracey I agree the only reason I know differently is because TMac said so when they came back from the break the next inning

  71. Phils Phan Says:

Bruntlett should retire after this game.

  72. Tracey Says:

@Miles: well, maybe the rule will change after this (it is a new park, and ground rules are often in flux). I just hope it doesn’t make a difference in the outcome.

  73. mg52 Says:

The offense needs to get kicking again. It’s fun to see them as they were in the first and third innings. They should kick back, have fun and take swings. Right now, they seem to be taking a few too many hittable pitches and swinging at slightly tougher ones.
On the other hand, Pedro did a good job to settle down after a somewhat rough beginning. The fastball’s had some velocity. Bruntlett – for once – has shown what swinging at hittable pitches early in the count can do.

  74. Andrew Says:

The Mets still treat Pedro like he was good. Hope the 30 wins in 4 years were worth it. Thanks for the 6th starter who goes 5 and gives up 4 earned. Maybe he will be on the playff roster. I doubt it though.

  75. Fort Lauderdale Says:

Got the long ball is a plenty against Pedro today, I am not super impressed with this outing. At least the announcers aren’t saying “if we were at Citi-Finianicial”

  76. Andrew Says:

Howard is fantasy poison. Maybe I can get him in round 4 next year.

  77. Tracey Says:

    ugh

  78. Terri Says:

score on 2 outs. Now a 3 run lead.

  79. Fort Lauderdale Says:

Pedro day is done why is he finishing the inning?

  80. Fort Lauderdale Says:

oops lol take that back durbin is in. I can see how i mistook him for a long curly haired latino

  81. Tracey Says:

OK, we need to score a lot of runs so this isn’t a save situation.

  82. Fort Lauderdale Says:

We dont need lidge blowing this game, that would kill this great week.

  83. Tracey Says:

    Oh… so lucky…

  84. Andrew Says:

Have the phillies broadcast today. Chris Wheeler will kill any good week.

  85. j reed Says:

when matt stairs manufactures a run against you its time to call Dr. Kevorkian

  86. Ed R. Says:

I am sorry but I don’t understand using Madson in this situation. He was used last night, and now that you used him today, in a non save/set up situation, you pretty much can’t use him tomorrow. Why not throw Walker out there and let him get some work. Hell even use Moyer. Anyone but Madson. It just makes no sense.

  87. Tracey Says:

(sigh) well, it’s a save situation now.

  88. Terri Says:

ugh, now it is back to three.

  89. mg52 Says:

The one things the Mets do that the Phils might want to try more is run aggressively and often. It doesn’t matter much for the Mets based on where they are in the standings. More stolen bases and more tagging up – those would help the Phils during the last month and, if they get there, during the playoffs. As we have just seen, that kind of baserunning frequently leads to runs. It’s more threatening than heavy use of the longball early on that sometimes fizzles out as the game goes on.
That pitch from Madson that Sheffield whiffed at, though – that was pretty cool.

  90. DJ Says:

You know I think the Mets as a team are just hitting good right now. Pedro goes out and they score 2 more runsThey hit Happ good lastnite but just couldn’t score and we know hoe they hit Hamels. They might be in a zone!

  91. Fort Lauderdale Says:

Did anyone just se the commercial for the new Ford Tauras YANKEES ADDITION!!??? It has pinstripes and a YANK logos all over it. WTF??!!? I am watching the METS feed… WTF has ford come 2?

  92. Andrew Says:

Watching the mets feed? Me too
    Wheeler is that bad.

  93. Tracey Says:

    uh oh…

  94. Andrew Says:

Here we go with the arsonist

  95. j reed Says:

DJ – I heard the mets have one of the best RISP averages in the NL league.

Crap now i have to perform the Santeria chicken scarifice to appease the baseball gods

  96. Terri Says:

    please not this again….

  97. Sean Says:

    WTF?!?

  98. Andrew Says:

Its bad enough you are 0 for 5
but block the ball with your body

    now bruntlett in the show

stay tuned if the phils lose

my account will be deleted here

  99. Terri Says:

you got to be kidding me.

  100. The Little Guy Says:

    Come on Phils

  101. Paul Says:

This has been such a sloppy game, wouldn’t be surprised if the Phils blow it.

    Come on Lidge!

  102. Terri Says:

I never seen anything like this. We are falling a part!!

  103. Andrew Says:

I put the mets feed off
Am watching the phils its better luck
    so i think

  104. Tracey Says:

    WHOA!!!

  105. Terri Says:

    HOLY SHIT!!!!!

  106. CZ Says:

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

  107. Manny Says:

    TRIPLE PLAY BY BRUNTLETT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WAY TO MAKE UP FOR YOUR ERRORS BEARD

  108. Andrew Says:

I will only watch the philles feed from now on.
    damn wheeler

  109. boxage Says:

    BRUNT

  110. joedad Says:

    Hilarious

  111. Manny Says:

    AWESOMENESS!!!!!!!!!! heheheheheheh

  112. Tracey Says:

Well, I know who’s getting the Ashburn today!

  113. Ed R. Says:

    Holy SH*T!!!!

Way to go E.B you bum!!!

  114. joedad Says:

    Hilarious…gotta love baseball

  115. Havoc Says:

    HOLY BEARD!!!!

  116. Terri Says:

I am listening to the radio. The reaction is great!!

  117. j reed Says:

Even an athesist would have to admit there’s a god because someone up there is smiling on eric bruntlett

  118. Ed R. Says:

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha….wicked burn!!!

  119. Paul Says:

That is the way to make up for the error!

    PHEW!!!

  120. Tracey Says:

Three hits and an unassisted triple play for Bruntlett today. Whee!

  121. winks tiddley Says:

Why do I feel butterflies in my gut with Lidge pitching? I hope he doesn’t BLOW another one. My heart can’t take it.

  122. Sean Says:

HOLY $HIT! WAY TO REDEEM YOURSELF BRUNTLETT! ASHBURN AWARD!!!

  123. Tracey Says:

Anybody hear the Mets feed reaction to that play?

  124. Terri Says:

I am still shock. Was not expecting that!!

  125. GWFightinsFan Says:

Triple play or not, Manuel and Amaro need to tell Bruntlett to pack his shit, and get the hell out

  126. Keeg Says:

That came out of complete NOWHERE! Wow. First time I’ve ever seen one of those. Absolutely incredible. And I was just using every cuss word in the book to describe the Beard…

  127. j reed Says:

    Terri -
you said “I never seen anything like this. We are falling a part!!” Well that can’t be true…three years of Mets baseball… so I guess you have seen it.

  128. Ed R. Says:

“Just when I thought you could be any dumber you go and do something like this…and TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!”

  129. DJ Says:

WOW!!! Do you realize how hard it is to turn a unassisted triple play? I guess we have seen just about everything in this game!

  130. Jason Bintliff Says:

wow. All I can say is wow. That was the last thing I thought would happen. Morandini last Phil to do it?

  131. MP Says:

Yeah Bruntlett totally deserves the Asburn today! That was crazy the only thing better than his unassisted triple play was Jeff FrancourKs sulking face when the game was over.

  132. PGD Says:

thanks for running on the pitch mets

  133. CZ Says:

They are talking on SNY about how this could be the first triple play to ever end a game.

  134. Tony Says:

Irony is when you get robbed of a triple only to rob the robber with a triple play.

  135. Tracey Says:

An MLB first: game-ending unassisted DP

  136. Tracey Says:

    Oops… I meant triple-play

  137. Gi George Says:

my heart hurts that was amazing
first time a game has ever ended on an unassisted triple play

i might actually have to go out and buy a bruntlett jersey

  138. Tracey Says:

Yes, Phillies post-game confirms: first ever game-ending unassisted triple play

  139. Thunder Lips Says:

The beard saved the game! Go Beard!

  140. Manny Says:

Well that should boost the Beard’s confidence for the rest of the season! whoohoo

  141. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

i heard it here on The Fan and recorded the Mets broadcast on the XM and Howie Rose summed it up like this “If thats not the epitome of how this season has gone for the Mets, than I don’t know what is”.My GOD honestly how much more crap do the Mets need thrown on them before it ends.i mean this is bad,but great play for Bruntlett but MY GOD,when is enough ENOUGH?

  142. DJ Says:

Hey we are only 2 1/2 back of the Dodgers for best record in the NL! When need to take tomorrow’s game and sweep the Pirates! Is Lee pitching tomorrow?

  143. Geoff Says:

If Bruntlett did not make that they he might have bee DFA after the game. He just literally made a job-saving play. That was a bizaare 9th inning. They need to win these kinds of strange games.

  144. Tracey Says:

Wow… I was sure Lidge was going to blow this one… that was an amazing end

  145. Manny Says:

Dropping to fifth place in the NL East should do it.

  146. Keeg Says:

Ed r. i was just thinking of that quote. Perfect for the circumstances. Hahahaha.

  147. Tracey Says:

    @DJ: Yes, Lee tomorrow.

  148. Jason Says:

Bruntlett saved his spot on the bench

  149. Tracey Says:

I figured when this series began that Happ and Lee would win, Hamels and Martinez were a toss-up.

  150. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

At this pace Manny, the Mets in last wouldn’t shock me in the least and youse guys would be reveling at that like a pig in slop if that were to happen.DAMN!

  151. Brian of CO Says:

Ok so I missed the game, I see we won, which is a good thing, even if the Mets scored 7 runs. What did Bruntlett do, to actually get the Ashburn? I never thought I would see the day. Also who pitched in inning 7 8 and 9?

  152. Brian of CO Says:

Let me take a stab at the Bruntlett thing. Did he get the Ashburn becuase of his “unassisted triple play”? I saw that on MLB.com, but doesnt give the rest just yet. Did Lidge give up any runs? Why did Cholly get ejected?

  153. Repeat! Says:

UN-BEARD-LIDGE-ABLE! Only the Mutts, only the mutts…..

  154. Andrew Says:

I think Lidge may be ok.

  155. Brian of CO Says:

He look good today? From what I can see, it looked like like an error by Howard, and error by Beard, then Beard saved the game. Cant tell how Lidge looked though.

  156. Repeat! Says:

Lidge was better, but we can’t judge him until his next save agianst a better opp with only a one run lead on the road. The E’s obviously were bad. Real Bad. Luckily for us Jerry Manuel is completely clueless. You don’t attempt a double steal in that spot. Otherwise, the Phils loose. Jerry said in his post game that he thought Perez threw well today. What???

  157. Brian of CO Says:

Well maybe he meant Perex threw well compared to how Wang from the Yankees has pitched as a starter. LOL.

  158. Repeat! Says:

Maybe. I used to like Jerry… But he’s a complete jerk. He was very classles when he question Ryan Church’s manhood when Wright was hit in the headsaid something like Wright will be back soon because Wright’s not Church. Didn’t the Mets completely screw up the Church conc. situation.

  159. Brian of CO Says:

Jerry actually said that? Your right, that is completely classless.

  160. Ed R. Says:

    7th – Durbin
    8th Madson
    9th – Lidge

All three gave up a run, Lidge’s was unearned.

Bruntlett’s Unassisted triple play was the second in history to end the game.

  161. teejvee Says:

    Big picture.

Going inyo this years playoffs v last year.

    1. Offense. Now that Ibanez has fallen off a cliff, it’s about the same as last year.
MAybe a little better cuz Utley’s healthy.

    2. SP-on paper , much better this year but it would be hard for anybody to match what Hamels did last year.

    3. Pen- not even close, last year way better.

4, Bench- They have no bench right now, so this is no contest.

    comments?

  162. Terri Says:

Eric Bruntlett will play again tomorrow, giving Jimmy Rollins a rest, Charlie Manuel said

  163. Brian of CO Says:

Well I dont really like talking about the playoffs regardless of having a 6.5 game lead on the Braves, and 7.5 on the Fish, but I agree with the Pen this year hasnt been up to par, and the Bench is no where to be found. Ibanez is in a slump. How do you know that he wont rise to the pressure and light em up like he did before his injury? Everyone has gone through these slumps. J-Roll did as well. Granted we make the playoffs (chances are good, but the season isnt over yet) it will depend on if the Offense decides to show up. If they play like they did the first game, and honestly the second, only scoring 4 runs yesterday on the Mets, then we should be scared of almost anyone. If they show up like it looks like they did today, granted I didnt get a chance to watch the game, chances are good to make it to at least the NLCS.

  164. Andrew Says:

    New nickname.
    The Amish Assassin

  165. Repeat! Says:

Don’t push it Chuck… We won the game, but why didn’t Charlie start Ben Fran in left today. That was a little on the special-ed side.

  166. Repeat! Says:

The bench isn’t that bad. Ben Fran, Dobbs(when healthy), Stairs(I know the slump hurts my case). The Phils are only missing a reliable rh utility infielder. Maybe today will get the cave man going.

  167. Brian of CO Says:

Ben Fran doubled the output of the bench. Stairs is in a slump because he isnt used anywhere near enough IMO.
