The Big Piece Takes Home NL Honors

Posted by Amanda Orr, Mon, August 31, 2009 05:02 PM

Ryan Howard is a large reason for the Phillies current success. He takes home National League honors, being named the NL Player of the Week.  “That’s why I call him the ‘Big Piece’,” Charlie Manuel said of Howard, who clobbered two home runs in a game against the Mets.

In August and September, Howard takes hitting to a new level.  His late season surge has begun.  This week, he batted .393 (11-for-28) with 12 runs batted in and five home runs. He had two multi-home run games.

Howard has 37 home runs and 111 RBI this season, tying Chuck Klein with four consecutive 30-100 seasons. This marks the fifth time Howard was credited with the award, with the latest being the week of June 1.

    The Big Piece!

  2. Brian W Says:

“The Big Piece”? Really? Uncle Charlie lingering in the showers a bit too long after game time?

  3. Keystone Says:

If Howard hits 3 more HR’s he will have the franchise record of four consecutive 40-100 seasons! Klein hit 31 and 38 HR’s his last two years of his 30-100 stretch.

  4. The Dipsy Says:

    PLEASE stop calling him that!!!!

  5. NJ Says:

Maybe Charlie has a little intimate a knowledge on Ryan Howards ‘performace’… When you think about it it is amusing that ‘the big piece’ is ‘player’ of the week.

  6. The Dipsy Says:

I will leave it to myself to think up a nickname for Ryan. I think, in light of his penchant for riding in Caddys, we should call him “Huggy Bear”.

  13. Brian of CO Says:

Is this two weeks in a row for the Phillies? Didnt Werth get it last week, or was that 2 weeks ago? Hopefully they can all get on the same page at the same time soon. That would be awesome. Either way, great numbers this week!

The dipsy, you don’t deserve to weigh in on anyone’s nickname when your own nickname is “the dipsy”
