Posted by Amanda Orr, Sat, September 12, 2009 03:15 PM

New York Mets (62-79) at Philadelphia Phillies (80-59)

Mike Pelfrey (10-10, 4.83 ERA) vs. Jamie Moyer (12-9, 4.98 ERA)

Time: 4:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Cloudy, 68
TV:  FOX

With tomorrow’s double header and J.A Happ’s oblique injury, Jamie Moyer will make his 23rd start of the year.  On Monday, the crafty veteran filled in for Happ nicely, despite the short notice.  Since his bullpen demotion, Moyer is 2-0 with a 1.41 ERA.  However, Moyer is 1-1 with a 7.08 ERA in 20 innings against the Mets this season.  Mets hitters have batted .342 against the lefty.

Moyer will be opposed by Mike Pelfrey.  Pelfrey is 3-0 with a 3.70 ERA in four starts against the Phillies this season.  Ryan Howard is batting .400 with a home run in his career against Pelfrey.  Chase Utley has a .300 average and three homers off Pelfrey.

The Mets’ elimination number is four.  The Phillies can officially eliminate the Mets from the division this weekend.

Drake's Barrel Aged Olde AleYour Gameday Beer- Drake’s Barrel Aged Olde Ale
Like a fine wine and Jamie Moyer, certain beers get better with age. This offering from Drakes is no exception, though it needs only 3 or 4 years in a brandy barrel to reach full maturation. In this amber-colored beer hops take a backseat to the woody apple, cherry taste. It is bottled in 6 oz. ponies but that’s really all you need when the beer weighs in at 10.24% ABV. Have it along side a light snack of apple slices and gouda. – By Brian

  1. Ken Says:

How sweet would it be to officially eliminate the Mets this weekend and continue to add to the laundry list of suffering that the Fightens have done to Mets fans… Its fun being a thorn in these guys sides between the Mets choking it up, the injuries and the dysfunction of their organization! The triple play was icing on the cake last month but a 4 game sweep would be a cherry on top.

  2. gm-carson Says:

Jamie Moyer is 2nd in the NL in wins since 2007 with 42. Ted Lilly and Adam Wainwright have 43 each. That’s nearly unbelievable.

By the way, your beer of the day packs a nice punch.

  3. mike Says:

Did I just miss it or did TWIB completely blow off Philly and the Phillies?

  4. Ed R. Says:

So basically Moyer is only good when pitching long relief out of the pen because he blows as a starter.

  5. Mike D. Says:

Jamie’s got nothing today. Happ, please get well soon.

  6. Keith Says:

    Moyer gonna get bombed?

  7. Keith Says:

    take Moyer out now

  8. Jeff Says:

WHAT A WASTE OF A GAME. Just cut him

  9. Aaron Says:

Lol and so many people thought moyer should start… cant even get an out right now.

  10. Jeff Says:

4-0 with no outs. LOL. This is why you dont start you piece of crap.

  11. Terri Says:

    Pull him! Pull him now!!

  12. Ed R. Says:

I never ever want to see Moyer in a Phillies uniform again. 5 batters, 4 runs, 5 hits…see ya. Can’t afford to have guys like this on the team when trying to win a division.

  13. Phan in TN Says:

    give me a freakin break

  14. PGD Says:

and he wonders why he got pulled from the rotation

  15. jt Says:

Moyer still sucks as a starter get him out of there before it is outta reach to come back hopefully he retires after this season.

  16. teejvee Says:

    whoops. Game over already.
Pelfrey owns them when even when they re going good. He’ll dominate them today.
    See you tomorrow folks.

  17. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

great to see and hear the great Howie Rose calling the game.

  18. Jeff Says:

you cant have guys like kendrik and moyer pitching with the division up in the air. this game is over and we havent even come to bat. moyer is a waste of human air. old piece of crap.

  19. David M Says:

wtf. 4 runs already? come on Moyer. You can do better than that.

  20. Aaron Says:

that is the thing david, he cant lol

  21. PGD Says:

i cant believe moyer is getting paid over 6 million this year for throwing meatballs to everyone

  22. jt Says:

This is likely a loss and we still gotta face cy redding tommorrow so there’s another loss.

  23. NJ Says:

you can afford spot-starting guys like Moyer and Kendrick because the division isn’t up in the air, have you heard a single analyst talking about the divisions with any other opinion than the divisions wrapped up?

Better throw Moyer out there and get beaten than put one of the arms we actually need on short rest.

  24. NJ Says:

^Also the Phils suck in games Mike Pelfrey pitches, he doesn’t kill us but somehow we just stink against him.

  25. Jeff Says:

thats how you do it moyer. 1 2 3. this game is over. back down to 5 games……….f u c

  26. Keith Says:

how we back down to 5 games? Marlins haven’t won yet.

  27. Jeff Says:

they will keith. they will not lose again to the Nats. I am hopeful but they wont. we will lose with Kendrik but win the late game. 2-2 against a AAA team is a joke.

  28. JasonB Says:

Speaking of pieces of crap, I can’t stand listening to Tim McCarver. What a jackass. Yo Tim – Jayson Werth was an All-Star too.

  29. Phan in Tn Says:

since the fricken game is blacked out for me in TN, I am doing gameday audio only.

    no complaints here

  30. charlie Says:

Anyone would have been better than Moyer Bring up a minor league arm to throw a fill in game The Mutts feast on Moyer’s meatballs ERA of 7.48 against Mutts WE CAnnot depend on the NATs

  31. j reed Says:

NJ – pelfrey’s a sinkerballer and we typically play poorly against them. If a sinkierballer’s on that day, they not only have giood sink but can throw it for strikes, and the best approach is to hit for contact. That isn’t our strong suit.

  32. Keith Says:

    alright Feliz! :D

  33. NJ Says:

j reed- what I meant is more along the lines of if you look at Pelfrey’s starts against the Phils, in all but one of those games has the Phils starter not got bombed or had a pretty poor game. Your very right the Phils don’t really hit him being the definition of that really average guy we just struggle against but somehow him being on the mound sends our pitchers into the fetal position.

  34. j reed Says:

Well that’s 11 for feliz…thank’s for hanging that slider pelfrey

  35. Rick The Marlins Fan Says:

FELIZ…NOW GET MOYER OUT. WE ARE BACK IN.,

  36. Keith Says:

no u’re not fake Marlins fan that is prolly Jeff

  37. Ed R. Says:

Lets just chip away at the lead, hold them and win the game. Ok great.

  38. j reed Says:

NJ – I see. why that happens, I don’t know…maybe they psyche themselves out because they know they’ll get poor run support…also this year why they put moyer out there against the Mets i don’t know…they juggle the rotation so that he will face the marlins but not for teams that beat him up. I suppose you can only juggle so much. Granted the circumstances are different today with Happ shelved. But its better to have the big inning early as we just decreased the lead by 2 and have enough innings to win. I was wondering does the ball used in cricket have seams or is it smooth?

  39. Keith Says:

now we’re only down by 1, with a solid Utley HR

  40. j reed Says:

Wow Howard beats the shift….more of that please

  41. Jeff Says:

    10-6 Phillies win this one.

  42. Sam Says:

    well what ever works

    hell yea raul!

  43. Keith Says:

and now we’re winning with a Rauuuuuuuuuul blast. take that Jeff!

  44. j reed Says:

Pelfrey jinx on bats is gone!

  45. joedad Says:

Jeff says: “they will keith. they will not lose again to the Nats. I am hopeful but they wont. we will lose with Kendrik but win the late game. 2-2 against a AAA team is a joke.”

Jeff, it would save everyone, including yourself, to just say that you are an idiot and slobber on your keyboard.

  46. Phan in Tn Says:

    now dat’s what I’m talkin bout….

  47. JasonB Says:

Nice to see the bats alive today!

  48. Keith Says:

    red Jeff, not black Jeff

  49. NJ Says:

the ball in cricket has a thick seam down the middle and the same one is used for a certain amount of time during games.

Love it, Moyer can be terrible but he can stick in a game if the offense can get back in it… Go Phils!

  50. Ed R. Says:

I am sitting here with my dad who came to visit to watch the PSU game…he lives in Jersey and they don’t get the Big 10 Network, but I do. Anyway, we are sitting here watching the game and Ibanez came up and he asked, is he finally back to which I replied, ask me after he hits a home run here…and the rest is history.

  51. Ken Says:

    Now we’re talking ! 5-4 over the muts !!

    How SWEEP it is !

  52. j reed Says:

Well that Raul HR was a really good sign not just cause it was a HR but that was a pretty good pitch and he still nailed it.

  53. Tracey Says:

    Better late than never:
    RAUUUUUUUUL!

(sorry, had trouble loading the page up… and my man Moyer has already blown through the Mutts in the next inning!)

  54. Sam Says:

boy, if moyer keeps pitching like this a phillies fan might ALMOST forget about Happ…since that Francour single he’s really got the Mets chasing a lot of pitches outside for easy out. Also helps the mets are swinging at everything. 25 pitches in the f irst, 25 in the last 3

  55. j reed Says:

Ed R.- i wrote this earlier on Dipsy’s post about Lidge. You’ve been singing his praises off late and thought you might be interested in this. I wasn’t sure if you had read it.

I lifted this off a Keith Olbermann’s MLB Blog “Baseball Nerd”. And yes that’s Keith Olbermann of MSNBC. It is a very well written blog that covers all of baseball. In this piece he discussed Lidge’s struggles and offers some insights on other closer options available to Charlie. It someone who has recently put up some of the best numbers in the pen and has closed before. Olbermann writes,
” Then there is a name, never mentioned, a current Phillies reliever who not only has two partial seasons as a closer under his belt, but two seasons in which he had to assume the role when others faltered. He stepped in, in 2005, to convert 23 of 28 opportunities for an NL team, and a year later went to an AL team late in a season and prevailed in 10 of 12 tries. This year he has kept opponents to a .213 batting average, and after initially getting racked in his return from the DL last month, he has reeled off seven straight scoreless appearances, giving up exactly one hit and two walks in the span. The problem, of course, is that these cameos have been in low-pressure situations – he doesn’t even have a hold (though he managed 19 of them last year).”
That’s Tyler Walker he’s talking about. Also Chan Ho has had 5 save opportunuities and only converted 2. Granted it’s a small sample, just throwing it out there

  56. Tracey Says:

@Sam: I think that’s Moyer’s maturity showing. A lot of these younger guys get shaken up when they get knocked around early. Jamie gave up 4 runs in the first, but he settled down quickly and has shut them down ever since. And the bats are backing him up for a change.

  57. j reed Says:

    Ed R. – that’s “Chan Ho has had 5 carrer save opportunities….

  58. Tracey Says:

    Keep trying, J. hehehe.

  59. Jeff Says:

Im a bid IDIOT KEITH…BUT wont slober.

  60. joedad Says:

23 of 28 save opps isn’t that great of a rate but he is a better option than Lidge or Park. My preference is Madson, because he CAN be the most dominant, then Myers, then Walker, then Lidge again.

  61. joedad Says:

Now that wasn’t so tough, was it Jeff?

  62. j reed Says:

joedad – i think his point was that he went 23 of 28 and 10 of 12 when the those team’s closers faltered. That’s what’s so impressive…he was thrown into the fire. Earlier this year when Madson was thrown into the fire , the flames got bigger…Of late he’s has rectified the stituation. He also noted that Madson has only converted 50% of his career save opportunities. Recently, pitch for pitch, Walker has had the best looking stuff out of the pen.

  63. j reed Says:

    walk beltran

  64. Phan in Tn Says:

    Raul is the man

    sho nuff

  65. Jeff Says:

is it me or does moyer seem to struggle in the first inning?

  66. Tracey Says:

FYI: The TV is about 5 seconds behind the radio. Probably so they can putz around without missing anything. I heard that catch in the last inning while they were still showing the Phanatic dancing.

  67. Tracey Says:

Wow… the Mets knocked Moyer around in the first, but we’ve definitely returned the favor!

  68. joedad Says:

Pelfrey does not want to be out there anymore

  69. Tracey Says:

WOO HOO!! That Moyer sac paid off!

  70. j reed Says:

jeff – maybe. Mioyer’s a location guy and needs the corners. I think that first inning he has to figure out what the umps.’ tendencies are. Once he knows what they are, he has a better idea of what he can get away with for the rest of the game.

  71. Tracey Says:

(hmn… OK, not actually ncessary, I see)

  72. NJ Says:

This has been a VERY good game by the Phillies, as much as you love to see your starter throw great games to get bombed in the first and then come back on offense and lock it down on the mound is better.

  73. Tracey Says:

Interesting observation, J. I hadn’t thought of that. Many of us have said before that Moyer had a rough beginning of the season because he didn’t know the umps’ zones. Looks like he has adapted.

  74. j reed Says:

Joedad – i agree, Pelfrey wears his emotions on his sleeve. No poker face at all.

  75. Howie Rose fan Says:

Hey what do you phillie phans think about Howie Rose. He’s the Mets radio announcer. I don’t know what he’s doing on Fox. McCarver is terrible by the way.

  76. Ken Says:

Ok this one looks like its over. Im switching to College Football.

Lets get the sweep tomorrow in the day/night.

  77. Ken Says:

Boy the Mets are absolutely horrible. Is their manager on thin ice ?

Id love to put them out of their misery tomorrow and officially send them to their grave for 09.

Phlillies : back to back to back Division Champs baby !!

  78. Phan in Tn Says:

    its raining again

  79. Tracey Says:

I don’t know much about Howie Rose, but anybody would be better than the usual Fox announcers. I’ve got the Philly radio on to avoid them.

  80. Tracey Says:

HAHAHAHAHAHA! OK, the Mets know this one is over.

  81. j reed Says:

Tracey – I know this year there are no longer NL and AL umps. They are mixed and I am not sure if this is correct, but in in protest to the pitch f/x camera systems 20 plus umps. walked…If that is 20 new umps that alot of adjusting the pitchers have to do. Rodger Clemens was known to keep some of the most meticulous notes on umpires. I also believe that an unintended consequence of the pitch f/x camera system is these postage sized strike zone. Calling the corners is more nuanced and i think the umps are afraid that under the scruntiny of the electric eye that inconsistency that can result from this nuance will be recorded and held against them.

  82. mikeB Says:

It is great to see the Phillies put up these numbers of hits and runs after their recent struggles.

  83. j reed Says:

    tracey – that’s “If there’s 20 new umps then that’s alot….”

  84. j reed Says:

Okay we have a 4 run lead…myers should not be worked and these conditions are not ideal…why risk a fall and possible reinjury to the hip. It was dumb last night and still just as dumb today

  85. Terri Says:

this is making me so nervous.

  86. Tracey Says:

Er… we *had* a 4 run lead. Yikes.

  87. j reed Says:

How many back to back appearances has Myers had over the last few games

  88. Terri Says:

    ugh.

  89. Tracey Says:

Crap. Crap, crap, crap. Yeah, time to pull Myers. No offense, you’ve done good, but not tonight.

  90. j reed Says:

Why anyone throws Frenchy a first pitch strike is beyond me

  91. Mostone Says:

    Come on Chan Ho!

  92. Mostone Says:

    crap

  93. Terri Says:

Do we have the worst bullpen?

  94. Tracey Says:

    Uh oh…

  95. Tracey Says:

Man, Moyer pitched a solid game, don’t do this to him!

  96. Tracey Says:

    WHEW!!!!

    Now, a little insurance wouldn’t be a bad idea…

  97. Georgie Says:

Lol @ McCarver thinking Tyler Walker was Madson, they DO look so much alike!

  98. mikeB Says:

j reed; who are you referring to as Frenchy?

  99. Keith Says:

haha Chris Wheeler is the best.

  100. Tracey Says:

@Georgie: Is that the same announcer who thought that some guy in a Panama t-shirt was John Mayberry Sr.?

  101. Sam Says:

i feel like the other NL east opponents always hit around the phils starters, even when none of the teams (marlins exception) have much in the way of offense.. 8 runs is a lot, even if beltran and wright are back. theyve been out for a while after all

  102. Tracey Says:

(and when I say “announcer” I mean “doofus”)

  103. Keith Says:

anybody gonna get Chris Wheeler’s new book?

  104. j reed Says:

    mike B – jef francoeur

  105. j reed Says:

    that’s jeff fancoeur

  106. j reed Says:

    that’s jeff francoeur

  107. Tracey Says:

OK, Ryan, we could *really* use a grand slam right about now, if it’s not too much trouble. Or maybe a double, that would be nice…

  108. joedad Says:

I 100% agree, fancoeur is more of a swinging station than Rollins.

  109. j reed Says:

Sam – the mets have one of the best RISP # in the NL. Today they have been 5-6 with runners in scoring position.

  110. Pat Gallen Says:

Why do I have zero faith in Howard with the bases loaded.

  111. joedad Says:

Pat, he owns the all time record for grand slams so have some faith

  112. j reed Says:

    Sam-everything else though…not so good…expect for K-Rod

  113. Tracey Says:

Rats… so who’s that closing? The radio didn’t say.

  114. joedad Says:

…but Feliciano owns Howard like an rented Chevy

  115. Jeff Says:

I love you Ryan but you are just not clutch at times.

  116. Keith Says:

    Madson

  117. j reed Says:

    expect = except…

  118. DC Says:

@joedad I totally agree. You knew Howard was going to strikeout against Feliciano. He has owned him. It may be the only pitcher that Howard actually looks scared of.

  119. Paul Says:

Please slam the door shut, whoever Charlie runs out there…

  120. DC Says:

Boy it would be nice to have a 1-2-3 close for once.

  121. Paul Says:

    Come on Madson!

  122. j reed Says:

how many days in a row for Madson

  123. Tracey Says:

    WOW!!! Nice save!

  124. Pat Gallen Says:

I didnt say it cause I wanted him to strike out. He just looks shaky in those situations anymore.

  125. Georgie Says:

Tracy, that was the Fox crew, wasn’t it?

    CHASE!!!!!!

  126. DC Says:

Way to go Chase. Saving Howard’s ass I think Howard’s head is not clear from that last at bat. I am telling you. He is afraid of Pedro Feliciano.

  127. Tracey Says:

    @Georgie: I think so.

  128. Tracey Says:

Two up, two down, so why am I still nervous?

  129. joedad Says:

Chase Utley, you are the f man

  130. Tracey Says:

Tatis is 0-5 against Madson, they say.

  131. Tracey Says:

    WTF????

  132. DC Says:

Because Madson is known to give up homers. Remember Baltimore. Thats why were nervous. Big surprise…it won’t be 1-2-3 close. Can we just for once not give up a hit or walk in a save situation?

  133. Terri Says:

    WTF?!?

  134. Tracey Says:

    Lucky. Really, really lucky.

  135. Keith Says:

    Madson can’t close

  136. DC Says:

Well..sorry folks. I knew that was coming.

  137. Terri Says:

    I hate this team!

  138. Georgie Says:

    Oh, good lord!

  139. Tracey Says:

ARGH. And that one is really, really, NOT lucky.

  140. Jeff Says:

Can we get a fuucc closer

  141. j reed Says:

tyler walker …. to many days in arow for madson

  142. Paul Says:

AWFUL, you just can’t trust anyone in the 9th anymore!!!

  143. joedad Says:

    just wow

  144. DC Says:

The Phillies have a real problem with their bullpen this year. They helped carry us last year. Madson can’t save, Lidge can’t save. This team has no closer.

  145. Terri Says:

this team is in trouble. We don’t have a closer.

  146. Georgie Says:

When Walker stood up out there he had a look on his face like “give me the damn ball!”

  147. j reed Says:

seriously walk beltran … 2 outs, no one on and he’s a lefty

  148. David, the Mets fan from Queens Says:

Thank you for the hanging beach ball, Madson! What a thriller!

  149. Tracey Says:

    oh good grief.

  150. Jeff Says:

Next time Madson throw a 95 right down the plate. he does this everytime. in that game against the pirates. 4 run lead with two innings. disgrace

  151. DC Says:

THe Phillies absolutely cannot hit K-Rod. I hate the guy, but the Phillies will go 1-2-3. They suck against him.

  152. Dave Says:

Moyer pitched a good game after the first inning. 7 innings, 5 runs doesn’t impress me.

  153. Terri Says:

I am about done with this team. No way they are winning this division. So frustrating.

  154. Paul Says:

What a joke job, 5 runs given up by the pen.

  155. DC Says:

Game’s over. K-Rod eat us up all the time.

  156. j reed Says:

tyler walker’s closed before …look back through today’s posts you’ll see something I quoted from another blog about our closer stituation.

  157. Paul Says:

This team needs to have 3+ run leads going into the 9th if they are going to do anything in the playoffs.

  158. DC Says:

Its really strange that we are still in the first place given how our bullpen has sucked, and the offense slept before they got to this series.

  159. Keith Says:

    should’ve used Lidge . . .

  160. Tim L Says:

Whats that 6 blown out of a dozen attempts? He just does not have the mental attitude. Right now, we do not have a closer period.

  161. Paul Says:

Bottom of the order vs. K-Rod. Doesn’t look good…

  162. Thunder Lips Says:

2nd time this yr madson has given up a 2 run HR to lose the game with 2 outs in the 9th inning. He did it vs the Orioles this summer. When was the last 9th inning where a phils closer had a 1-2-3 inning? This is ridiculous

  163. joedad Says:

That is a funny Sears commercial

  164. Mostone Says:

What a freaking game! Can we score in the 9th!?

  165. Georgie Says:

J reed, was that the Olbermann thing? Interesting.

  166. Doug Says:

My mistake, it’s the Panthers that’ll be shitting on the Eagles.

  167. jt Says:

our bullpen fing sucks and game over because k-rod owns them.

  168. Dave Says:

Also, no more Madson closing please. Walker? He can’t be worse than what we have now, and it’s not like we lose a vital piece of our bullpen if he goes off the tracks.

  169. Tim L Says:

Now the bats are heating up, but the wheels are coming off the pitching…
The Marlins are licking their chops.

  170. DC Says:

Big surprise. K-Rod whiffs Ibanez. I can’t watch this. They suck against this guy. This game’s over.

  171. j reed Says:

Madson was rested so that’s not it…he just choked.

  172. Paul Says:

Grrr… glad football season starts to tomorrow. I don’t trust this team at all right now.

  173. Georgie Says:

    Is Werth high or something?

  174. DC Says:

K-Rod is throwing heat. Werth is scared. This sucks

  175. Andrew Says:

Cant watch the game. FOX screws people who have the package on saturdays

needless to say I guess Madson and Myers arent the answer

Guess chan ho is the last man standing

  176. Terri Says:

Chan Ho has been shaky lately. Out bullpen is shot.

  177. jt Says:

Madson shouldn’t be closing period I almost rather have lidge then him.

  178. Terri Says:

    *Our

  179. DC Says:

This team has problems. We don’t own September anymore

  180. Tracey Says:

@Terri: I thought you meant it as in “out, out, damned bullpen.”

  181. joedad Says:

j reed – Walker was 0 for 4 last year but worth a shot

  182. winks tiddley Says:

THEY STINK “*!!#!*” No pitching in the bullpen. Say goodbye now as the Phils will not last in the post-season. They stink

  183. DC Says:

Way to hang in there Pedro . It would be nice if you parked one now.

  184. j reed Says:

Dave – Walker coverted 23 of 28 for an NL team and 10 of 12 for an AL team. The was done in place of closers who failed. Why not. Madson has converted 50% of his career save opportuinities. You tell me. Beside he has had the best stuff coning out of the pen of late

  185. Dave Says:

Can we give the bullpen a collective Jeltz? I mean, Madson sucked, but so did Myers and Park didn’t pitch all that crisply. Plus, Lidge deserves a share because if he didn’t stink this year, then Madson never tries to save the damn game.

  186. Radi0 Says:

Pathetic. Face it, there is a legitimate chance that this team will not even make the playoffs. Our bullpen is in absolute shambles. We’ve just gone 3-7 against 3 terrible teams, and the Marlins are creeping up on us. I have ZERO confidence that the Phils will take care of the fish the last week of the season. None. No lead is big enough anymore, even against the bottom feeders of the Major Leagues. Did I mention the word pathetic? Unbelievable.

  187. Tracey Says:

(SIGH!!!!) I don’t believe it. That’s just awful. Just awful.

  188. Mostone Says:

I can’t remember the last time the bullpen gave up this many runs. When you score 9 you should win the game.

  189. DC Says:

    K-Rod is an ass.

  190. Paul Says:

That’s how you close a game. Hope the Phillies bullpen was paying attention.

    Pathetic…

  191. Tim L Says:

Pathetic. There’s 3 1/2 hours of my life I’ll never get back.

  192. j reed Says:

jeez people don’t all jump of the cliff at once.

  193. Georgie Says:

Poor madson looks like he’s gonna hurl!

  194. Jeff of Nova Says:

Charlie needs to stop playing the we will see how I feel who should close. cause Madson and Myers both blew this game so the options aren’t much better than Lidge.

Rolling the dice with this team in the Ninth is not fair and not working. They need to get it together. Need to look in all directions and name someone and go with him.

  195. DC Says:

This team could very well not make the playoffs

  196. Tim L Says:

I’m not jumping, I just want to know where the world champs went.

  197. JasonB Says:

    Well that was just disgraceful.

  198. jt Says:

I had a bad feeling about madson coming in because almost choked last night and has already pitched 2 straight days.

  199. j reed Says:

joedad – i believe he was also coming of an injury.

  200. Terri Says:

The Phillies look like the Mets in 07. We gave up 5 runs in the last two inning. We have some BIG problems. HUGE! This last months has been brutal.

  201. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

In the words of the late GREAT Bob Murphy “Mets win the damn thing by a score of 10-9″ always look forward to that outcome with us playing.

  202. Thunder Lips Says:

Will someone please tell me the last time they saw a 1-2-3 9th inning in a save situation from our bullpen? Please tell me b/c there is always a hit, a walk, etc.. Does anyone have the scouting report on Wright? You can’t throw him a cookie down the middle. The Phils will make the playoffs b/c the Fish have to be ridiculously good down the stretch and they won’t be, BUT this back end of the bullpen crap is sickening. Cholly doesn’t have much to choose from when all options can’t get anyone out. We’re taking one of two tomorrow in the doubleheader.

  203. jt Says:

It’s sad the offense show up and the pitching doesn’t and when the pitching does the offense doesn’t.

  204. mikeB Says:

Tatis has owned the Phillies since the Mets brought him up from the minors. He is the one that started everything in the ninth for the Mutts. Phils have no clue as to how to get him out when they need to. Played for the Cardinals for a number of years and then for another team or two before floundering in e minors for a few years. No excuse for giving up two home runs to Wright though. Madsen for the Jeltz?

  205. Mets fan Says:

Ha ha you can’t beat a team that has half the players on the DL how sad. ha ha

  206. joedad Says:

Thunder, Wright had hit only 8 home runs all year so he is not a power hitter. Thats what makes this one such a strange ending.

  207. Ken Says:

Damn, what an awful game. I tuned it off and came back during a commerical. Just a pitiful game. I dont know what Manuel was thinking allowing Madson to close. Madson is a set up man. He doesnt have the stuff to close. Im disgusted.

  208. JasonB Says:

Yeah, keep laughing Mets fan as you wallow close to the basement.

  209. Ed R. Says:

Thanks J-reed for that article clip about Walker. I have been signing his praises and Madson’s effort tonight only furthers my belief that Madson should not be the closer. He is more valuable in the 8th inning. He can not close. He has the stuff and he does not have the mental make up. I know I could never manage a baseball team, not a pro team anyway but I know pitchers, especially relievers as I spent many years around them. Walker has what it takes to be a closer. Would he be Rivera or K-Rod or Papelbon? No. But he would be better than the 09 Lidge and Madson of any year. I will put money on it.

  210. j reed Says:

    jt-
francona only pitches Papelbond two days in a row…such is the way for some fireballers. The speed they pitch at, coupled with the stress of the stituation can use too much of the body’s “fight or flight” neurotransmitters (adrenlaline) needed to fire those fast twitch muscle fibers in their pitching arm.

  211. Trout Boy Says:

It’s over. This team will not make the playoffs. Even if they squeak in, they are one and done. Can’t really do much when you don’t have anyone that can close out a game. Nope, not “jumping off a cliff”, just being realistic. They are playing lousy ball against a bunch of sub 500 teams…3-7 in last ten? Seriously? WTF? It’s the same silliness now every night with this club now. No relief pitching, horrible with RISP (nice K in the 8th there Howard), shoddy defense. Been like this for too much of the season for this to just be slump. Really a sorry state of affairs.

  212. joedad Says:

Georgie, good question (Is Werth high?). He looked lost today

  213. Grrrumpy Miner Says:

Shut up Mets fan……as a fellow Amazins fan,we have absolutely nothing to be proud of this season.I was hoping some diluted Mets fans would leave well enough alone and shut up.

  214. NM Says:

as much as it would be nice to see the mets tank for a top 5 or 6 draft pick next year, i cant help but smile when i see the team come back and rip apart the philly bullpen :)

if i were a philly fan i would be worried – your bullpen is terrible, and you know it is when you are talking about chan ho park MAYBE having a shot to close games…

  215. NM Says:

    grrrrrrump your a joke.

  216. GWFightinsFan Says:

Alright calm down everyone…yes it was a tough loss, yes they’re been struggling lately, and yes they have problems with their bullpen and their clutch hitting lately….but still, they’re in a much better position now then they were this time last year..and let’s face it, this is a team that can get hot and gets cold…so better to get the cold streak outta the way now, and then they can get hot just in time for the playoffs…its all a cycle

good i hope we do… would kill for a top 5 pick!

  218. Keith Says:

this site can sure get annoying when the Phillies lose. it’s kinda sad. oh well.

  219. j reed Says:

Ed R. – I would too..besides what’s it gonna hurt at this point. Other post season contenders are smelling blood in the water. It’s also not just his stats. Walker’s stuff has just looked the best of late. Also I think all those innings the pen was subjected to when the starting rotation hemorraged early this year is catching up. Really think the front office was lax in regards to the bull pen. If you have time check out dipsy’s post on lidge…I wrote something about lidge’s mechanics…as a ex-pitcher I was wondering what you thought.

  220. j reed Says:

Someone talked about Wright with only 8 HR this year…he spent the majority of the year with Beltran behind him…look at what Matt Holiday has done for the MACHINE…he’s that much more scary now

  221. Phan in Tn Says:

no Grumpy Miner bashing, folks. He’s a gentleman and a decent fellow.

on another note: I stepped out to cut my grass and my Phils were winning. whats up with that?

  222. Ed R. Says:

j-reed, I did read over your post and I would say that it is very on point. I would say I am impressed but I fear that would come of as somewhat demeaning. So instead I will summarily say that you are very right in that Lidge’s motion is completely jacked up. Is it because he is injured? Personally I think so. A guy does not have a season like he did last year, which was a fluke, but regardless, you don’t pitch that well and then change your motion unless there is a reason. Changing how you are going to pitch, say going from a power pitcher, think Pedro of the late 90’s to a finesse pitcher, think Pedro today, or you change your mechanics unconsciously, usually because you are trying to offset pain. In this case, Lidge’s mechanics are noticeably different.

You are right, he is leaning towards first base which is not only changing where he releases the ball as his arm slot is slightly lowered but it is also changing when he releases the ball. A slight alteration in an arm slight will yield a slight, change in delivery time. Now mind you we are talking hundredths of a second, but considering how fast it takes for his pitches to go from his hand to the plate, hundredths of a second matters in the grand scheme of things.

This change in delivery has forced pitches to either low in the zone thus wild pitches and balls, or hang in the zone because he tries too hard to get some lift on the ball in hopes of getting the proper drop. It makes sense being as that his main out pitcher is a slider, which for him drops low and in to lefties and low and away to righties. The problem is that his pitches can not find the happy medium. They either hit the dirt or they hit the outfield seats after someone turns on it and drives it out of the park.

At this point with Lidge, it was mechanical, it still is but more so, it is mental. The mechanics can be fixed, heck it could even be done this year but to really make the fix, properly it takes longer than 3-4 weeks. However what can not be changed, not in 3 weeks is his mentality. As most anyone paying attention has noticed, Lidge looks lost even before he steps on the mound. He is a fragile person. That doesn’t make him an ineffective closer it just means that his manager needs to recognize when he is struggling sooner. I can not speak for Lidge but I can tell you from personal experience. When I was brought in to nail a game down and was struggling I would rather my manager take me out and try and get someone else to do the job rather than blow the game.

I can remember times, though they were few and far between where I would sit in the dugout watching, hoping and praying that the guy the manager brought in to finish the game because I couldn’t would pick me up. In the end, it wasn’t about me, it was about the team and thats how I approached it. I think Lidge looks at it the same way, but I don’t think Charlie realizes that. I feel like Charlie is so afraid to hurt someones feelings and confidence that it overshadows what should be perfectly justifiable decisions by a manager. Would you rather get pulled and hope a guy cleans up your mess or would you rather blow it entirely for your team? It’s a team game, and although a closer may be the last line of defense, they are still part of a bigger picture.

I fully expect Lidge to be back next year as the closer, and with a vengeance but as for this year, its time for him to take a seat and let someone else who can be more effective jump on the train and help us in the playoffs because Lidge can not.

  223. JoeBlow Says:

Hey someone wanna tell the GREAT RAULLLLLLLLLLLL….its 3 outs …what was he thinking …juice must be getting in the way….thinking slows down at times….I’m feeling the same way most do….oh they’ll make the playoffs but thats it….a one and done….

  225. Keeg Says:

dude. i hate people saying “they just have to get this slumping out of the way, then they can get hot towards the end of the season!”

    NO.

they’ve been slumping since the middle-end of August. if its not the freaking lackluster starting pitching from Lee and Hamels, and now Blanton apparently, its the bats go completely dead. and then when both get on the same page (as in today, for the most part, after that first inning), the bullpen completely chokes and kills us.

this team can’t get on the same page, and hasn’t been able to in quite some time. thats not good. thats what i’m worried about.

  226. j reed Says:

Ed R. – thanks for your comment. I typically believe it is best to elimate what can be measured and quantified by the physical, and statisitical evidence before opting for psychology. I by no means underestimate its importance in sports, in fact, at higher levels of performance where the physical talent is on a more even playing field, it is what distinguishes the best from the rest. It is one of the intangibles that makes the Phillies who they are and is often underestimated by others esp. the odds makers and pre-season soothsayers. Its also something that Manuel has a real grasp of (not so much when a pitcher struggles). Because psychology is more interpretative it is harder to assess esp. from my tv set….There a little more speculation invovled. So, once I’ve eliminated everything else then the problem is most likely behavioral. Also I believe people are to quick to play pop psychologist (perhaps not in Lidge’s case) and it often used by bad analysts and bad coaches to hide behind lazy thinking and incompentence. This trickles down to the fans who start speculating about players personal lives. The end result, 610 WIP. With Lidge, I was wondering whether the he had an unsolved problem with technique which caused the bad performance and the bad performance in turn cause the mental distress. Regardless he needs to sit. I think the stress of the closer stituation can cause a sort of post tramatic stress when things go bad…the extra adrendaline etches the neural pathways deeper than usual and this in turn reinforces whatever neuromuscular pathways were there at the present. (bad muscle memory). So even if the mechanics were corrected anytime soon, those neural pathways are still strong and in the same save scenario would override the newly formed neural pathways created by corrected mechanics. I think of it as like having a virus that you eliminate from your files but not the registry of a PC. the best medicine is to avoid the original stressor until that pathway’ s signal is to weak to overtake the new one. Madson also…allowing him to get shell shocked once every 2 or 3 save opps. is asking for it and will ultimately affect him in his set-up roll. I also think lidge will benefit by the two-seamer he’s been working on. Another weapon in the arsenal will keep batters more off balance. I think a split finger FB would really work well with his slider but I’ve heard you need large, strong fingers to throw one. His hands look small. Plus that might put too much strain on the elbow. Thanks again. Let’s just hope Kendrick’s sinkerball is sinking and that new change-up works or it’s gonna be the ugly start tomorrow and a bull pen with alot of ice on those sholuders by the end of the double header.

  227. Repeat! Says:

1st off…at least you didn’t have a front row seat to the horror show as I did….The Bank went from a Rock concert to a scene from “Night of the living dead” in a blink of an eye…website auths…i’m starting to get real sick of your double standards w/some Phils…Ryan Howard made 2 late Es in the Nats serious..people went nuts..Chase fumbles the toss from rollins and then he drops the ball in the same game….and no one makes a sound…Blanton got rocked by the Nats for 8ers…but this site gave the Jeltz to Howard???Hmmmm.Chan Ho’s perf was much harder then Madson save in game 2 of that series. , But the site gave Madson the Ashburn…..Howard makes an untimely E this site goes nuts…Chase makes E same situation i.e. at Braves and the one against the Nats I just reff or Mets early..Silence…..Site monitor saying he has no faith in Howard.. A guy that patiently waited his turn due to the Thome deal..A player w/faults sure no ones perfect but if Howard’s Sept perf over the years aren’t clutch then I don’t what his…How about the three key bombs combined in WS games 3/4. That’s very jerk like and also unprofessional…I guess I see why the ” 700 level site gets way more respect than Phillies Nation. I like the posters on here, but some of the site keepers’ commt are blindly biased. Back to baseball. Charlie is well on his way to orch… the greatest collaspe since….2007….WTF is he doing with the pitching staff as a whole…Friday he left Cole in too long…And Jamie shoul not have been allowed to pitch into the 7th..But Charlie had no choice because he messed up so bad earlier….Charlie’s boneheaded mover w/pen and bench is going to have us watching the 09 playoffs w/o are beloved Phils…He is also going to get Brett reinjured b4 playoffs? We’ve been talking about T. Walker for several weeks now, but Chuck continues to allow his BP to be overused. Keep Myers in on Fri and with what would’ve beenn an xtra rest day, he would’ve blown the Mets hitters away in the 8th….Chan Ho is well overused…Sound familar…Yeah that’s right Charlie burned out Durbin before July in 08 and he hasn’t been the same since… As much as I want Brett to close;he’s not ready yet as far as his strength… is concerned. BUt him in as closer now, and I gurantee Myers blows his arm out. No way Brett should be pitching on cons days yet. Also wtf is up with bfran…Charlie just lets him rot for days and days on in…He should’ve pinch hit for Howard on thurs…and he should’ve pinch hit for Howard on Sat…We all know Howard can hit lefties cons…so by default Bfran would’ve been more favorable than Howard even agaisnt righties…Sat’s game was on Charlie….fri was almost as well..His stubborness or unwillingness to give T Walker a chance to close needs to be overuled by Amaro…NOW!! Brett had no business whatsoever being asked to pitch today…He’s been back, what a week and has been used more often than Walker has been used in several weeks. His refusable to do away w/3 lefties in a row is bleeping insane… In 07 Charlie was wrongly crti.. for his handling of the bp against the Rockies…That Phils BP was garbage and Charlie had very few options…Last year Charlie didn’t have to manage the BP very much as J.C. Mad-dog and Lidge did it own their own…If he lets go of Lidge and again give Walker a chance it may surprisingly stablize the back in of the Pen as it would be J.C/Eyre, Madson/a not over used Chan HO/Condrey then Walker. Chan Ho would be our version of the Wildcat as he can relf pitch in all of the 6th/7th/8th….and either Happ or Pedro would be the more solid long relief guy…We finally get several hits w/risp…and we still loose…Charlie thinks that once/if Phils make the post season that everything will magicaly fall into place like last year.. Our BP is plenty deep enough to complete for a “back-to-back” Champs w/o Lidge…Ruben pull Uncle Chuck into your office and get this BP straightened out.. Sorry for the novel and the probable 1,000 grammar mistakes..But I had to get this off my chest…I could give a rats *ss about the Eagles right now….The Philies are that ended the drought take that “golden standard” of empty trophy cases… Good Nite
