Phillies Can’t Buy A Run

Posted by Amanda Orr, Wed, September 02, 2009 10:19 PM

What comes around goes around.  Last night, Cole Hamels pitched a complete game shutout against the San Francisco Giants.  Tonight, the Giants shutout the Phillies, 4-0.

You know your offense is going bad when the telecast finds a shot Jupiter before any runs are scored.  Perhaps that is where the Phillies offense went.  They’ve scored only 11 runs in the last six games.  They were shutout for the fifth time this season.  The last time they were shutout was on August 1, against tomorrow’s starter, Tim Lincecum.

J.A Happ didn’t necessarily pitch poorly, although he did give up four runs for the first time since July 24, when he allowed five runs against St. Louis.  He played Houdini for the first four innings, but ran into trouble in the fifth and sixth.

Andres Torres did what the Phillies did not do: drive in a runner in scoring position.  In the fifth inning, the Giants took a 1-0 lead with his RBI single up the middle.  Juan Uribe and Aaron Rowand hit back-to-back home runs in the sixth extending the lead to 4-0.

Happ’s line: 6 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO.

Brad Penny returned to the National League in grand fashion,  pitching eight scoreless innings.  He gave up five hits, walked one, and struck out two.  He was able to get the Phillies to ground out 13 times, including two double play balls.  Penny, who was cut by the Red Sox, has not lasted eight innings since 2007.

There’s no denying that the Phillies offense is in a major funk.  Luckily, the pitching has kept them close during the rough patch. It’s cliche, but you can’t win if you don’t score.

lousy lousy lousy game. what the hell happened to raul…. ladies and gentlemen, I officially kind of miss pat burrell.

  2. Phils Phan Says:

Well, the Marlins beat the Braves, so no lost ground.

Wes Helms had the game-winning HR, however. I feel dirty being happy.

  3. joedad Says:

    lol Phils Phan. Feel dirty

  4. vito Says:

something is def wrong with raul….he needs to sit for a few…..get ben francisco some abs…..ibanez just looks totally lost….hes pressing and just hacking at this point…

  5. joedad Says:

Magic number shrinks. It shrinks? Like a frightened turtle.

  6. joedad Says:

The highlight of the game was the shot of Jupiter and a couple of its moons. That was really cool.

  7. Jeff Says:

I was at the game tonight. sitting right on top of the bullpen. i watched penny warming up. he owns the phillies. raul is a waste. i dont think he is this bad but get him out of the lineup right now. the phillies have no bench at all. miguel is werthless. our bullpen is average. if we are not hitting we will not win. the whole lineup is horrible. the fans tonight were so ready and we score 0. the freak will kill us. we are so lucky to play in a bad division. we are not winning it all this year. to up and down. a 5 games series with the freak, cane, zitto, penny..over. sorry

  8. mikeB Says:

Great choice for the Jeltz Award, Amanda, which after this game should also include Victorino, Utley and Feliz. The pitcher cannot win if you do not score him any runs. Too bad that Dobbs is out injured because probably would have started tonight instead of Feliz against a righty. Ibanez should be sent to Clearwater for a week for hitting rehabilitation. When Burrell was playing for the Phils and was in a slump, at least he got a hit every now and then. Ibanez is ice cold at the plate.

  9. phils_ftw Says:

Sad thing for Happ, even if he only gave up 1 run he still would have lost thanks to the totally absent offense. Poor Happ can’t BUY his 11th win.

  10. mikeB Says:

I agree with Jeff. If the Phillies had to play the Giants a playoff 5-game series right now with the way the Phillies offense is going, I would have to say the Giants would win in four games with a sweep not out of the question. Let us all hope that Colorado or some other contender beats this team out for the Wild Card.

  11. vito Says:

Raul better get back on whatever he was taking the first half……manuel had burrells butt on the bench when he would struggle like this…..and i also am starting to think our boys think they can turn it off and on when they want….fla got close a couple of weeks ago and we went on a tear…..this is the first time this group of guys have been the front runners…..the only thing positive about it is that we seem to lock in when we need to….but its a dangerous way to live…..ask the mets how that worked out the last couple of years….

  12. j reed Says:

Joedad – thanks for the heads-up about Jupiter. I’m just about to drag my telescpoe out.

  13. Justin Says:

Doesn’t this seem more and more like a complete reversal of our problems? I feel like I was just writing about how the pitching was naked in the breeze out there, but we had a ton of run support to back them up. Nobody was talking about our lineup without using the word “formidable.” There was a time this year when a 1-0 lead in the 9th was nowhere close to legit.

But, Lidge didn’t pitch, so that’s like taunting the bull without opening the gate.

  14. j reed Says:

mike B. – definitely the Rox, esp. if its true that Aaron Cook’s gone for the season….

  15. Radi0 Says:

1 run scored in their last 19 innings. Yikes!

  16. karen Says:

It seems that each loss exposes more problems. Raul is in some major funk…whether it is just him returning to earth or an injury or both…he needs to sit out for a while or something. The bad thing is that our bench is dead….bruntlett, cairo, stairs? The other teams in the playoff hunt added something the last few weeks…the Phillies only did the lee/francisco trade which was awesome but Lee cant be truly effective without run support. Raul is just such a flop…..the bad thing is that he is hitting into a bunch of double plays which compounds the problems.

  18. Bruce Says:

In an earlier post today, I commented:

“If Brad Penny is on his game and he is highly motivated with his new team…I be concerned about tonight’s game. The Phils’ continued struggles with RISP does not help. Besides, the Giants are in badly need of a win to keep pace with the Rockies for the WC.”

Many thought Penny “sucks” and even Don M stated..”But no seriously, he’s terrible at pitching.. If we lose to him tonight, I’ll ban myself from this website for a week.” (chuckles)

Headline news: Penny dominated Phillies with 8 shutout innings.

Well, what do you know… Penny being “highly motivated” and as Giants manager, Bochy said “.. I just think this guy was on a mission tonight and it showed…”, displayed his all-star form of years past.
After the game , Penny said..”This is what you put a uniform on for, to get into the playoffs and play in the World Series.” He knows he has an opportunity to help the Giants get past the Rockies and other contenders to win the WC and enter the playoffs.

The Phillies continued to struggle with RISP going 0 for 5. Happ again was vulnerable to the long ball. He gave up two more HRs (one on soft breaking pitch that hung and the other a fast ball down the middle). Happ has now given up 7 runs including 4 HRs in the last 14 innings in 2 starts (0-2). Let’s hope that is not a trend.

The only good news is the Phillies didn’t lose any ground as Atlanta lost to Florida.

  19. jt Says:

they need to get raul out of the lineup for a series like give him the houston series off and give francisco some start and throw in stairs for a start to try and get him going or even call up michael taylor and see what he’s got.

  20. jt Says:

btw ryan howard batting average is officialy higher than rauls.

  21. mikeB Says:

If Happ continues to be vulnerable to the long ball and clutch hits, he might not be dependable to throw in the playoffs. Considering travel days, Phils might want to consider throwing just Lee, Blanton and Hamels in the first playoff series.

  22. george Says:

Well , let’s see…i guess this about sums it up:

1.) the phillies are in a serious run scoring slump and with The Freak pitching tonight, it will continue (no way Phils win tonight)
2.) Happ seems to be in a decline. How does he give up 4 runs in 6 innings….bad time to pick up a slump Unhappy Happ..
3.) Pedro is mediocre at best…..(it’ll be proven tonight) but the Phils can’t score runs , so if Pedro allows only 1-2 runs it won’t matter because Linsecum will virtually get a no-hitter……
4.) Hamels and Lidge will revert back to true form (Losers)
5.) Ibanez went from Triple A fodder to Single A. Terrible. Possibly contributed to going off Roids after the witch hunt after the small talk that those first half numbers were so “un Ibanez” – like”all star game.SEND HIM DOWN!!!
6.) Brave not that far off. Phils go into a mini slump and the braves on a mini roll and they are all caught up.

How do you not score against Penny? You don’t if your in a Runs – scoring slump….normally the highest scoring team in the National League (don’t forget – it’s the Phils!) would have scored against Penny.

What then, is the answer? you go with what you have, obviously…..and don’t use Lidge in save situations, use Chan Ho or Meyers when off DL; bench Ibanez; use Moyer in earlier appearances (5,6 innings).
    Have a nice day…..

  23. mikeB Says:

The fear is with Happ is the increasing number of innings he is pitching with each start heading into September would catch up with him and affect his effectiveness.

  24. justin Says:

shit happens. move on to tomorrow

  25. mikeB Says:

    Right, Preditor.

  26. bambam Says:

Few Things: Baseball is a marathon not a sprint, don’t worry about the offense. Raul should sit for a few days to clear his head but again he is going to be fine. Finally, the playoff rotation should be Hamels, Lee, Blanton, and Happ. I love Lee, but he has never pitched in the post season and Hamels has. Also, Hamels is coming around and when right he is the best we got. The reason Happ pitches game 4 is you don’t want him to press himself like billingsly did for the dodgers in the NLCS.

Check back in a month. If they still can’t score runs then, we can panic.

  29. Jeff Y. Says:

George, are the Muts still 18 games out of first place? Rumor has it that they cannot afford to sign any free agents next year. The Muts will resemble the Pirates for the foreseeable future.

  30. karen Says:

The thing that seems wrong here is so many people forget the struggles hamels has had this year. he has the third-lowest run support of any NL pitcher who has thrown at least 100 innings. The Phillies’ playoff success/lack of success will be determined by the offense. They did not score at all last night……..That first run Happ allowed was enough to seal the deal in the loss once again. Last week in Pittsburgh, the exact same problem. The loss against Arizona in late July…..no run support.

  31. bob Says:

“1.) the phillies are in a serious run scoring slump and with The Freak pitching tonight, it will continue (no way Phils win tonight)”

Well since Ill be at the game, thanks for making me feel better about it.

Damn 1 loss and some people are losing their minds, I didnt know the Phils were supposed to go undefeated this month.

  32. Keith E Says:

Don’t worry about a thing, we’ll be fine. Scoring runs is overrated!
This team will be just fine. Playing through a full baseball season is like setting a tile floor. You can’t pick out individual pieces and say “I don’t like it” before it’s finished. You need to look at the whole floor. Let’s enjoy the finished product. I know we’re going to love it.
    GO PHILS!!!

  33. Jeff Dowder Says:

The “knowledgeable” Philadelphia fans strike again. These posts are so funny after losses! It’s a six month season, people. Teams stop hitting sometimes. Teams lose sometimes. Teams get shutout sometimes. Deal with it. If we took a poll back in April, I think everyone would have been happy with a seven game lead heading into the last month of the season.

  34. 85 Says:

Everybody cool off for a minute. Remember how bad they looked for a two or three week stretch in June? Couldn’t pitch, couldn’t hit. Then Charlie lit the fuse and they took off. There’s no point in him doing that right now because the lead is comfortable. They’re going to maintain it, and riding the guys hard right now will only make it less effective when it’s time to do it for real.

Unfortunately, it seems like this team gets hot and cold together. Aside from the Big Man, who’s still hitting it hard, they seem to go into funks as a team. I agree with everyone who says Ibanez needs to sit out some more games. It’s pretty likely that he’s been nursing that groin for months, and with a lead like they’ve got now is the time to give him a few days off per week. It’s not going to get perfect, but any rest will help, and he can work himself out in the meantime so that when they need him the most he’s set to produce.

Last night was a bad game, but the Giants are also a good team. You’re going to drop a series now and then. Better it’s two of three to a good team while you’re sitting on a healthy lead. Step away from the ledge boys and girls…

  35. Morris Buttermaker Says:

Last night’s lost drops the Phillies to 14-6 over the past 20 games.

  36. teejvee Says:

The “good ” news is that it wasn’t like their bats all of a sudden got hot in the post season last year. With a couple rare exceptions, the offense was almost as anemic as it is now . Very similar to now in that any time they got RISP, they went into choke mode.-weak popups, groundouts, k’s…the stuff that doesn’t move runners and deosn’t score runners.

  37. therookie300 Says:

Reading these posts you would think the Phils dropped to third in the division. There is still a big lead out there for the Phils. People gotta relax. Pitching carried this team last year and I for one think that the pitching WILL do the same this year. And Lidge will hold down the fort.

  38. Mostone Says:

Some of you guys are the biggest Eeyores I have ever seen.

  39. schwalmy Says:

It seems to me the offensive part of this team goes dead as a product of there success they get hot just hitting for average and get homers as a result then get just as cold when they expect homes to be the offense!

  40. bob Says:

Only 14-6 in their last 20……LMAO! Boy do we suck!!! HAHA.

I’m throwing in the towel because we got shutout in September. I’ll meet everyone at the Walt Whitman at noon today. Or I’ll just go be a Nationals fan, a model of excellence in the MLB.

  41. The Original Chuck P Says:

Last night’s loss drops the Phils to 14-6 over the last 20 games…

    Winning Percentage: 70%

Get a grip… one game. Baseball is crazy… felt good heading into last night’s game but those are the games that you usually lose (the ones that you forget about… it was only a two series ago that we dropped two of three to the Poo-rates). Focus and concentration is so important… there is no margin for error. It’s a game of ups and downs… I don’t mind us being in a slump now as long as we’re hot in October.

  42. bob Says:

I want to hit Lincecum tonight. I’m selfish but I also think the bats are due to come alive. Baseball is full of ups and downs.

Tonight will mark the return of RAUUUUULLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  43. Maverick Says:

Nope. Tonight Phils get blanked again… score 1 run over 3 games…
fast fwd 1 month.. phils draw the Giants 1st round….and phils fans everywhere make a run on pharmacies for malox.

  44. Mike Says:

I think Raul is hurting from the groin pull.. ask any hockey player, that stuff just doesn’t go away, especially when you’re 37.

His groin is either causing him pain now and affecting his mechanics, or he was nursing his groin after he got back and picked u some bad habits.

I’m obviously no hitting instructor, but I did think I noticed some really basic problems. He has a good eye for balls and strikes still, but his swing looks like a drunken frat boy at a softball game. I’ve noticed he keeps pulling his head up rather than keeping it down with the eyes focused on the ball through the end of the swing. His shoulder keeps flying outward,.. similar to his head movement.

I’ve also noticed he’s doing a twitchy, stutter thing with his front foot as he’s awaiting the pitch.. maybe he’s always done that but I don’t recall it in April-May,.. too much weight on the back leg?

Again, I’m just a schmo watching the game with a beer in my hand.. but those are the things I’d be looking at.

  45. Manny Says:

Thank god I didn’t watch this cause I would’ve been pissssssssssed.

  46. beta sigma shag Says:

I almost got out of bed at 3 am to write on here after watching the game on DVR. Cause I felt like a lot of these posts. But now it is today, I know that baseball is a long season, and ups and downs are part of it. Penny was out to prove something last night and got the best of the phillies. Happ pitched ok but has lost some control, and for the first time showed some emotion on the mound after a strike was called a ball then gave up two homers, he will be ok. But I do think Raul needs a day off maybe 2
but I am not as pissed as I was earlier. I think they will hit the freak tonight and take 2 out of 3 from the Giants

  47. Chuck Says:

Manny, I started to watch it, then switched to the radio because another member of the family wanted to watch something else….by the 6th inning….I was watching SOMETHING ELSE as well.

But….seriously guys and gals…..WE WILL BE FINE…I’m not gonna say that the prospect of facing the Giants in a short playoff series isn’t going to be a challenge. But I think we can overcome all of this. This baseball, people. Everyone just needs to relax and get a grip.

Yeah, and I’m going tonight as well. Actually, I’m kind of looking forward to seeing The Freak in person. I just hope we can get to him early and salvage something with the Giants this season…because right now we are 2 – 4.

Don M, if you’re out there and reading any of this…..I guess we’ll see you sometime next week…after the self-mposed ban is over. I got it wrong, too. I predicted a 7 – 3 Phils victory. Who’d of thunk it!!

  48. Jeff Says:

Like I said earlier in the post what scares me is not scoring with runners at second and third. They dont get big hits. Now the whole team is slummping. the Giants offense is horrible. Happs command has been off for the past three games. Maybe teams are figuring him out. I dont have a good feeling about the playoffs. We are so lucky this division is horrible.

  49. bob Says:

In we wanna look to a potential playoff matchup with SF here is how I see it:

The Giants rotation as a whole might be slightly better than the Phils but its not like Blanton and Happ are sloutches.

The Phillies have 5X the offensive punch of the Giants. Some of this maybe taken with the Giants rotation but we have seen the Phillies able to shut down the Giants with their top 2 pitchers already.

This offensive slump is not going to last forever and they have actually hit Tim Lincecum pretty well outside of our last trip to San Francisco.

Both teams have very good bullpens. Pretty even.

Phils have the experience and ask Aaron Rowand from the 07 Phils, it means alot. Playoff baseball is totally different, how much experience does that team have, even Mr. Wonderful Lincecum.

I see the Phils taking it in 4 or 5, even if their offensive production is limited. We have a very scrappy team and a very experience team.

  50. The Dipsy Says:

The one thing I remember about the post season last year was that the Phils were taking more pitches per at bat AND were actually trying to move runners over, even from the top of the order. It was vey effective for them. P.S. Don’t be surprised if Bochy goes with a three man rotation.

    The Dipsy

  51. Geoff Says:

I think the Phililes will beat this team in a 5 or 7 games series. Once they get back to the postseason they WILL settle down and be more focused again. They had the SAME prodblems last year in early september, don’t you remember? They were coming off their late august slump but were still being inconsistent. Ryan Howard was already on his tear liek this year, but the team was still collectively playing poorly in too many games for our liking. Last year, at about 2 weeks from now, they REALLY finally started to get it together and tighten things up for the remainder of the season.

This team really is followiung the same pattern more or less as a whole as last year. Though I was really pissed about that last night because I can’t stand Penny.

  52. JeffS Says:

Stairs et al need bats to see if they still have anything. Raul, if his groin still hurts, needs more days off. Do we have a match? Anyone feel confident enough with the lead in the division?

  53. Chuck Says:

To make a further point about a potential series with the Giants, I am MORE scared of the Cardinals at this point than I am of the Giants. The Cards have pitching, Ryan Franklin is a stud, and their offense is MUCH better than the Giants’.

  54. Evan Says:

Ibanez is really struggling and the bench is terribly thin. I hope Charlie uses September wisely as a month to tweak things in preparation for the playoffs.

Overall I’m not too worried. Victorino, Ibanez, and Werth are kind of slumping. That won’t last forever.

  55. bob Says:

I am very comfortable with a 7.5 game lead.

And I think the Phillies can beat anyone, anywhere in any type of series. Of course I am worried about any matchup, it’s the playoffs. But this team has more than enough to get the job done once again.

I think we need to take a step back after a loss and recognize how special a team this really is. We sometimes tend to forget that with the slumps and ups and downs of the season.

Raul is slumping since coming off the DL, but would we be 7.5 up without that production? I doubt it. Blanton has been nothing short of an ace since June. JA Happ, unbelieveable. Lee, Hamels when in form?

Also the best offense in the NL and a top 2-3 in MLB.

This is special, something that we haven’t truly seen before. Enjoy the ride and maybe we’ll get another parade down Broad Street!

  56. Bruce Says:

I read this: Since July 26, the Phillies are batting .209 with runners in scoring position, and in their last nine games, they’re 12-for-80 (.150) in that situation. Overall this season, they’re batting .253 with runners in scoring position, 11th in the National League.

Fortunately, the team have been riding on the success of their starting pitching and the longball of “The Big Piece” (Howard).

However, as the concerned manager Manuel stated…“We have trouble manufacturing runs.” …“If the right guys don’t get on base and we don’t run, we have a tough time scoring. They know. They definitely know when they don’t knock somebody in from third. I played 20 years. I knew every time I didn’t get somebody in from third. And if they don’t know, please come and see me.” Take note of this Werth, Ibanez, etc.

As a matter of fact, the bench can share some of the blame the way Stairs has gone oh-fer in his ABs since July. The Phillies now are in a greater need of a productive bat off the bench than the Dodgers. ;-)

It would have been nice if the Phils could have picked up Thome given that they’re already paying part of his salary for this year from when they traded him a few years back. :-)

  57. j reed Says:

What the bench needs isn’t another slugger or free swinger but a small baller, utility guy like a david eckstein type…i was hoping we would have picked jamey carroll from the indians

  58. Joey Says:

I guess it doesnt really matter where the runner scored from as long as he scores, right? a run from first and home is worth the same as a run from 2nd and 3rd. I get frustrated too, but as long as they keep winning its not really worth complaining about.

  59. Marc H Says:

The Phillies offense is as overrated as their pitching and defense are underrated

  60. Boz Says:

Since the Cards are now tied up with the Dodgers for the best winning %, who do we root for as far as NLDS matchups are concerned? The Phils may not get home field if paired up with the Dodgers, but do we really want to face the Giants as the Wild Card. Best case scenario would be for the Phils to get the best overall winnnig % and draw the Rockies as the Wild Card and get home field advantage.

Long story short, the Phils need to start worrying about the Cards and Dodgers so that we get the best possible NLDS scenario. If nothing else, home field advantage should be a goal that the Phils strive for as 2009 NL East Champs is in the books.

  61. j reed Says:

joey – when 46% of your runs come from the long ball it only takes a couple of slumping batters to cost you a ball game. Think about the number of hits to the number of hrs in all of baseball…I can’t imagine that even substracting hits made with no on base will make a huge difference between hits to hrs. Futhermore as many hrs. are mistakes made by pitchers, it is reasonable to infer that 46% of our runs come at the expense of hitters not only taking advantage of pitcher’s mistakes but waiting for these occurences rather than adjusting to pitcher. I mean with a runner in scoring position you sometimes have to hit for contact, yet more often that not i see swings and belt buckles….that is, when I see a batter’s belt buckle after he swings, he’s not looking for contact but to drive the ball hard with extra momentum he gains by completely rotating of his hips. But what you gain in power you can lose in accuracy. That’s one of the reasons we as a team strike out alot. And striking out with runners on base is a cardinal sin in baseball unless your facing Bob Gibson. This crap would have Ashburn rolling over in his grave. What’s so frustrating is that small ball really requires heads-up play which means its learned. It’s much easier to go from power to contact hitting than the other way around. Why our guys don’t grasp this is puzzling. Think about how that much more deadly our offensive would be with a modicum of consistency. Granted all teams slump…look at the Red Sox in August, dreadful RISP numbers, but that was more anomally than anything else. Our batters are consistently inconsistent which can burn you in the post season. Hopefully it won’t this year. And it’s not complaining but voicing a legitimate, quantifiable concern. Besides is there something wrong with wanting to improve things that can be done just by playing better fundemental baseball?

  62. Don M Says:

I am around.. but Brad Penny on 26-days-rest looked freakin awesome last night!!!!

And because he beat us, and because I’m a man of my word.. I am banned for a week from Phillies Nation

  63. if Don M wasn't banned Says:

… Jamey Carroll has been starting for the Indians.. they didn’t want to move him to another team because he’s among their best players right now

  64. j reed Says:

if Don M wasn’t banned – thanks for the Jamey Carroll info…still wished we would have gotten someone like him before the trade deadline.

  65. john mays Says:

    Brad lidge sucks.

  66. Phil mays Says:

I really think you need to CLOSE Brad Lidge and PASTURE Charlie Manuel

  67. karen Says:

Say what you want about the offense….I certainly have…..but when you have a lead going into the 9th, you need to have someone who is able to close the game and give the win……mistakes happen and no closer is 100percent all the time, but when there is a closer with the history of and current performance of lidge, that person cannot be going into the game. I am sick of hearing about how we need to be gentle with lidge to not mess with his confidence, but what about the confidence of the phillies? or the fans who the team needs for support and money???
