Florida Marlins (86-74) at Philadelphia Phillies (92-68)

Anibal Sanchez, RHP (3-8, 4.10 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels, LHP (10-10, 4.25 ERA)

Time: 4:10 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather:  Cloudy, 69
TV:  FOX
Twitter: Phillies Nation

The regular season is quickly coming to a close.  The Phillies already clinched, but it will still be an intense series at The Bank.  In game 161, the Phillies continue to fight for home field advantage.  The Phillies dropped last night’s game to the Marlins, so this is a “must win” in order to win to keep their home field hopes alive.

Cole Hamels will make his last tuneup before the postseason.  Hamels would like to end his roller coaster season on a positive note.  Against the Marlins this season, Hamels is 0-1 with a 4.67 ERA in 17.1 innings.  Marlins hitters are batting .254 against him.  Chris Coghlan is 4-for-7 with two home runs against Hamels.

Hamels will be opposed by Anibal Sanchez.  In the second game of a double header, Sanchez tossed eight scoreless innings against the Phillies.  If Sanchez is on, he can be really good.  However, if he is off, he can be very wild.

Today’s lineup: All the regulars are in.  On a side note, the Phillies added some pitching depth, recalling Antonio Bastardo.

Rollins SS, Victorino CF, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Ibanez LF, Werth RF, Feliz 3B, Ruiz C, Hamels P.

Bud Light Golden WheatYour Gameday Beer – Bud Light Golden Wheat
I just picked up a six pack of this new offering from Budweiser out of sheer curiosity. It’s not often you see variations of a light beer. This one is intended for a mass audience so it’s not as strong a Wheat as Pyramid’s, Leinenkugels or even Blue Moon. I would say it’s like Bud Light with a little more flavor – the packaging says coriander and citrus peels but it’s hard to pinpoint them among all the bubbles. Today have dinner in front of the TV, a Phillies win and spaghetti and meatballs sounds like a plan. – By Brian

    ….the drunk games….

  2. Colorado Joe Says:

Charlie must be ticked they lost the last two games if he is playing all the regulars. If the Brewers hold on (5-4 in the 8th) then the Phillies clinch home field in the NLDS before the Phillies game starts. The only way Phillies get homefield in NLCS is if the Phillies win their last 2 and the Rockies beat the Dodgers in the next 2.

  3. j reed Says:

lets hope for some plate patience if tinkerbell sanchez is dealing

  4. joedad Says:

I think so too, Joe. He wants to win this game

  5. Harry Kalas Says:

  9. j reed Says:

when is the last time the starters didn’t give up a run in the first inning

  10. joedad Says:

Gold glove this year for Rollins and Victorino. Anyone else? Utley? Werth?

  11. Keith Says:

runs in the first inning again, gees.

  12. j reed Says:

get the toilet paper…cole’s crapping the bed again.

  13. j reed Says:

Rolins and Utley gold glove years

  14. Harry Kalas Says:

    3run 1st?

  15. Harry Kalas Says:

1..2..3… This is getting very hard to watch…. I’ll give them thru 5 to show some life, and then I’m done til Game 1 of the playoffs..

  16. Keith Says:

    Phillies clinch 2nd place!

  17. joedad Says:

Phils have homefield now. Time to rest up for a night of drinking

  18. Georgie Says:

Gotta love some good polka music….

  19. Harry Kalas Says:

I can’t anymore. This bleep is really bleeping me off. Our starters look like drunk trash. Chase is garbage. If Howard was playing like this he’d running for his life….. I’m done til the playoffs.

  20. j reed Says:

    and lederhosen

  21. j reed Says:

    howard your my hero

  22. winks tidley Says:

Cole Hamels is damaged goods. He must be hurting badly as he is simply mediocre at best.

  23. j reed Says:

    51 rbis in 49 games …un-frickin’-believable!

  24. Georgie Says:

The guy who goes to the Reading Phils games with us wears lederhosen when he plays in his German band, they look rather uncomfortable.

  25. j reed Says:

yeah it means leather pants in german.

  26. Manny Says:

WHY IS FOX SHOWING BRAVES – NATS??? AGHHHHH

  27. j reed Says:

    actually it’s “leather trousers”

  28. winks tidley Says:

we should try to field an all-Amish team. They may be able to beat the Phils of today.

  29. j reed Says:

yeah but leather trousers sounds a bit risque for the amish

  30. j reed Says:

where are you Manny….I’m watching the game on Fox and I’m in the philly area

  31. Harry Kalas Says:

“The appearance of the the Law must be upheld. Especially while it’s being broken!” -William M. Tweed

Charlie is trying to do the same. God bless’em. Those drunk bastards!

That was harsh. Chase isn’t garbage… Far from it. Why was he pulled?

  32. j reed Says:

cairo better make the play off roster

  33. teejvee Says:

Utley is mendoza for the past month.
    OUCH.

  34. j reed Says:

HK – cause the cards lost so we by default get home field advantage for the first round.

  35. joedad Says:

HK, have you seen him play lately? It is a rest day I think, nothing more. He could use tomorrow off too.

  36. j reed Says:

that’s what happens when you overtrain

  37. j reed Says:

i’d prefer to seeing the fraulines in the lederhosen

  38. Harry Kalas Says:

I was sure we’d tie it up there….. This 1 or 2 run thing is driving us all a little nuts….

  39. j reed Says:

bret watch it with uggla…he owns you

  40. Georgie Says:

hahaha, I thought she was going to throw it back!

  41. j reed Says:

CAIRO BABY….Do we nedd Brunt anymore?

  42. Georgie Says:

j reed, girls don’t wear lederhosen, unless they’re hirsute!

  43. Harry Kalas Says:

Fill thine horn with oil and gooooo……

  44. j reed Says:

myers look a bit better but his curve isn’t myers-like yet

  45. j reed Says:

I was thinking more like heidi klum in lederhosen

  46. j reed Says:

    jayson get something started

  47. Harry Kalas Says:

we suck……all we need to do is win two games….the dodgers could easily loose thier final two…our shaky bp would benefit heavily from home field advantage. Charlie said he wanted this game… One run thru 6 at home?? Pretty sad…..

  48. j reed Says:

that’s why we need to get Chone Figgins, a legit .300 contact guy…someone consistent. Too many streaky hitters in this line-up

  49. Georgie Says:

Plus, that is a REALLY cool name.

  50. j reed Says:

alright let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth

  51. Harry Kalas Says:

I hear ya jreed….I’m trying to stay positive, but we haven’t played a good game really since the 1st game of the Marlins DH…. The clincher was a lot of fun, but those Houston(and Brew-Crew) pitchers were all garbage…I thought after we clinched that we’d relax a little and start swinging the bat….. How about dem Twins?… They could tie the Tigers tonite.

  52. pmartinez Says:

hey, let’s swing at every first pitch with two men on

  53. j reed Says:

    Georgie-
yeah isn’t it? Plus he’s all hustle which he’d love in Philly, has played every position but catcher and first base, base stealer…what’s not to like

  54. j reed Says:

that’s “which we’d love in philly”

  55. Harry Kalas Says:

    WTF?? %&%$#%&*

  56. j reed Says:

Pmartinez – making my point for Figgins in the lead off. Neither Jimmy or Shane have the head or consistency for lead off spot

  57. winks tidley Says:

Chone Figgins should be our starting third baseman next year. We should trade Cole Hamels (he will always be brittle and we just might be able to get someone for him — perhaps Roy Halladay for Cole). We should trade Jason Werth, as he is getting older and will never be worth more than what he is now. We have two studs down in the minors, as well. We should NOT sign Brett Myers unless he will sign for around $4 million. We should look at possibly Ben Sheets, as well. We desperately need an overhaul of our bullpen. PREDICTION: We will win just one game in the post season. And yes, I do love the Phils, I am just being realistic. Say goodbye to Matt Stairs, Pedro Feliz and Eric Bruntlett.

  58. Harry Kalas Says:

1st pitch Rollins and ground ball choppers Victorino…. What’s better than that??

  59. j reed Says:

HK – sanchez isn’t a slouch but the others….zoils….here’s my theory about that. Scrub pitchers throw alot of balls because their not as good. We don’t have the plate disclipine to let these guys hang themselves. Consequently, we swing at pitchers pitches which are only that because the scrub was trying to throw a strikes but can’t. That is, they are not legit pitchers pitches but just failed attempt to throw a strike. Which makes it more painful now that i think about it

  60. Georgie Says:

winks, I’ve always thought Cole wouldn’t remain here too long, think he’s a Cali boy at heart, no offense meant.

  61. j reed Says:

    hk – zoils=zoiks

  62. Harry Kalas Says:

Trade Cole? We just signed him to a three year deal. He drives me crazy at times too, but not enough to trade him. Roy? Not gonna happen dude…. Our best chance passed(there still maybe a 1% chance we’d get’em during the off season) . Trade Werth?? The peace pipe speaks…. Ben Sheets? Maybe, but for how much. Garcia move still gives me nightmares… Pedro has 80 rbi dude with a couple of game winning slams)… I like Figgins, but of we don’t get him….Feliz stays period…I’m not predicting anything for the post season…. One win means we’d still have a chance to win 2 or 3 more to win a 5 or 7 game series….

  63. Harry Kalas Says:

    Lidge is warming up! Yayyyyy

  65. Harry Kalas Says:

    The Big Tease….

  66. DC Says:

Phils are showing us that they will get bounced from the first round in three. This is pathetic. They are going to have lost four in a row going into the playoffs. They just want time off.

  67. ed Says:

Forget the feliz talk pedro is one of the most productive 7 hole hitters in the nl as far as rbi’s and homers and he is one of the best defensive third baseman as well.

  68. DC Says:

Holy crap. Could this be a 1-2-3 inning for Lidge? Oh wait…its not a save situation

  69. joedad Says:

    interesting, a 1-2-3 inning.

  70. j reed Says:

Figgins is a free agent and Feliz’s contract is over theis year …no need to trade for him…buy him. Hamels is having an off year in what promises to be a very good career. If we bailed on him we’d be the laughing stock of the league. Ben Sheets has the same stuff as Myers.
Hamels has had some back problems but brittle?…are people concluding that because he had an increased work load he some how damaged his arm and can’t perform as well. The only damage he could have done is either nerve impingement or laxity of the ligaments. Both of which would probably at this point in the season landed him on the DL. Perhaps the league has adjusted him and he failed to adapt. How long can a starter in today’s game get away with a 92+ mph 4 seamer and a change-up esp. with the league gunning for you. He needs to develop his 3rd pitch.
Good news JP Ricardi got canned. He should have taken Rueben’s 2nd offer. Ha!

  71. joedad Says:

Chone Figgins would score 150 runs as the leadoff hitter on this team.

  72. Harry Kalas Says:

My apologies Mr. Lidge. Great job! Now it’s time for a walk-off.

  73. j reed Says:

now suddeenly the marlins are playing gold glove offense

  74. Harry Kalas Says:

    you lucky f*uck

  75. j reed Says:

    oops offense = defense

  76. ray Says:

Home field is not really a big deal. Even if the dodgers get it, we’ll probably be playing the cards in the second round and we will get home field. Of course we have to get by the rockies, but dc said we’re getting swept so I guess we should concentrate on the eagles fully now

  77. Harry Kalas Says:

    damn rollins!

  78. hotstove Says:

    shit no home field.

  79. j reed Says:

joedad – yes figgins….we can dream…or what do you think is it possible?

  80. ray Says:

if rockies win the next 2 and we win tomorrow yes home field, just unlikely

  81. j reed Says:

ray – my concern about home field is with the closer issue…at least we’d have more games with the last AB in case we blow the save

  82. ray Says:

That’s true but what i’m saying is that if the dodgers get home field then they will play the cards. It’s probable that the cards would be able to beat them, and we would retain home field if we beat the rockies. Like last year when the cubs had home field and the dodgers beat them giving us home field

  83. joedad Says:

no home field in the 2nd round. The Braves should have won the division. Hell, I would rather have a season like the Mets so that we get a better draft pick. They should trade Howard because he had an out today. Trade Werth because he is skinny and made an error earlier this year that he shouldn’t have made. Hamels was a one hit wonder for 5 postseason games last year. Trade him for Rios if you can get him. Amaro is terrible as a GM, they should hire Riccardi. It is time for rebuilding around that kid in AA and hope to compete again in 2013.

  84. Andrew Says:

Yes trade cole and his 10-11 record
especially if he pitches poorly in the playoffs.
Eaton or moyer can go 10-11 next year.
Sell while there is value. If he sucks post season. If he steps up like last year. Build a statue to him.

  85. ray Says:

joedad the sad part is, andrew is behind you on everything you said. dc also…lol

  86. joedad Says:

j reed, I think it is unlikely. Figgins will cost alot because he is a good player. Feliz is still a solid player and will be much less expoensive. Some players will get hefty raises next year making it unlikely that they will make a splash in the FA market.

BUT, they suprised us last year by spending some money and eating some big contracts.

    Yes, we can dream though.

  87. j reed Says:

Joedad – Ricardi in place of Rueben…it is in the works as we speak. Just give me afew days. And i hear there’s a magic beans sale tomorrow. Werth should fetch a few extra bags.

  88. joedad Says:

ray, I forgot to mention they should have Lee become a switch pitcher so that he can save his arms and pitch more innings.

  89. Andrew Says:

Your ace is 10-11 and sucked all year. Why isnt there talk of him not being in the playoff roster or rotation?
Obviously I am joking but he needs to put up now. Period.

  90. karen Says:

Not to sound whatever but I really think the Phillies need to win tomorrow. Forget rest or whatever, they need some momentum going into the postseason…..

  91. j reed Says:

there is actually a switch pitcher out there in the farm system of some team

  92. ray Says:

maybe they should cut off all their heads and cryogenically freeze them ala ted williams and we can just bring them back at a future date

  93. j reed Says:

    Andrew – cause he’s pretty.

  94. Harry Kalas Says:

yeah that pitcher will need Tom John Surgey in both arms…. It’s not just the loss Karen… It’s the lack of fundamentals that has us all very frustrated. J-Roll is not a lead-off hitter. I mean that 3-0 pitch was high and outside. Take the walk and extend the game… Steal, passed ball, wild pitch, catchers inf, balk ,hit batter, error all put him in scoring position for the game tying run even w/o a hit from Vic. If Charlie gave him the green light then he’s a bonehead too. Even if he did, take the bleeping walk Rollins…

  95. j reed Says:

    strike outs get you NADA

  96. j reed Says:

forgot philly’s favorite canucks are playing the NJ Brodeurs

  97. Harry Kalas Says:

I an’t too excited for the Flyers in game two of the season. They looked good last nite though….

  98. j reed Says:

    still it somethin’ to do

  99. j reed Says:

  100. keeg Says:

Yeah how is hamels 10-11…gotta be one of the worst records for a pitcher coming off winning the NLCS and world series mvp…to be under .500…terrible

  101. hotstove Says:

OK so the Phillies are gonna win the NL this year its a definate with Lidge inning today its appenrent he’s better now and is gonna be the closer in the post season

  102. joedad Says:

keeg, Since it is so rare for a player to win NLCS and WS MVP’s, there aren’t many out there. However, out of curiousity I checked Orel Hershieser was the last one. His record the following year was 15-15, not much better than 10-11, is it?

  103. joedad Says:

OK,off to a beef and beer to chug mass quantities for a few hours.

  104. Harry Kalas Says:

..scratch that… I using only get into playoff hockey, but this team is fun to watch!

  105. Harry Kalas Says:

    that’s usually

  106. j reed Says:

…but that VS commerial with Crosby at the end. makes me flat out sick

  107. Jeff Says:

Just pathetic. Could of had home field all the way through. I blame this on the old man. go away already you piece of trash. hate you. never liked you. bet you the phillies will be knocked out in the first round. then i come back here and laugh. LOL….

  108. billy Says:

princess hamels. he is a joke. just an average pitcher with a good playoffs last season. nancy boy.

  109. Karen Says:

Does anyone know the starting pitcher or anything about Sundays game? I sorta don’t feel like spending time and Money on a aaa level roster
