MLB Drops the Ball on Start Times

Posted by Pat Gallen, Fri, October 09, 2009 02:55 PM

Philadelphia Phillies fans cheer during introductions prior to the start of Game 1 of the National League division baseball series against the Colorado Rockies, on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2009, in Philadelphia. (AP Photo/Rob Carr)Just because it’s a 2:37 first pitch doesn’t mean you still cant have a good time.  Oh, maybe you’ll have to take off from work, miss a day’s pay, and spend $100, or more, on a ticket.  But you’ll still have fun.

Lest we forget that last year, when the Phillies faced the Milwaukee Brewers at Citizens Bank Park, the start time for the opening game was 3 p.m.  Game 2, as it turned out, began at a much more manageable six o’clock.  How is that possible?  How can the Phillies/Brewers series, pitting two teams who had rarely sniffed the postseason prior to 2008, be given a 6 p.m. time slot? Must have been a mistake.

Bring it back to the present, and here’s what we have: back-to-back games, with the last two National League Champions, starting before the kids get out of school.  Once was an insult to the reigning World Series Champions and their fans, who for 82 games packed Citizens Bank Park to 102.2 percent of capacity. Twice is more like a punch in the mouth for fans that sold out 73 games this year, including 42 straight at one point.

MLB considers nothing but money, and it’s never more evident than now.  Philadelphia has put itself on the map as one of the premier baseball towns in the U.S. and Denver, while proving to be a pigskin town, still ranked 11th in all of baseball in attendance.  Still, that wasn’t enough to allow both teams to play in the crisp, nighttime air in South Philly.  No, MLB saves that for Denver.

They would rather save the later starts for when the temperatures barely creep above the freezing point in the Rocky Mountains.  They, whomever they might be, have conjured up a sked that says “Phillies at Rockies, 9:37 p.m. est.  Be thankful for that, because on a Saturday night, you and the kids can stay up late and watch as the clock approaches, and likely passes, midnight.  MLB decided to abhor Philadelphians once again for Sunday’s night game out in Colorado.  Start time: 10 p.m. Eastern.

This is not a cry for Major League Baseball to change it’s policy on everything Yankees, Dodgers, or Red Sox. They will continue to play dumb and give the advantage to larger television markets.  And isn’t that what it’s all about?  Playing to the TV Markets?

It’s hard to argue that the Yankees should not be on at, or close to, prime time.  But let’s be equal here.  In a game that prides itself on revenue sharing – which is supposed to allow for equality amongst its franchises – has certainly dropped the ball.

How about one of the two games being set near prime time here in Philly so that countless people were not burdened with having to take off from work, or yank their kids from class (not that they would care), or sell their tickets because the other two options were not options at all?

For a city that is currently reeling from a budget crisis, Phillies fans have found a way to buy the tickets, merchandise, beer, soda, hot dogs, and parking that comes along with a night out at the park.  This town has shown its undying support for their team, and at the same time, for the entire game of baseball. Would it have been too much to ask for the same in return from a game that so many people value, and enjoy to the fullest on a daily basis? Have you seen big, empty seats behind home plate for any of the Phillies games this season? Not a chance; but at the new Yankee Stadium, it serves as a beautiful backdrop for TBS or FOX to show during one of their telecasts.

If there happens to be a Game 5, does 2 a.m work for you?

My new username is actually an anagram for my name. Free playoff tickets if you can contact me with just that information. Awwww ya.

  2. bob Says:

It’s a joke that this game is not at 6pm Sunday. 10pm in 15 degree temps is a flat our farce!!!!!

    GO PEDRO for game 3!!!

  3. ray Says:

The cap in football is what gives all teams a chance to be competitive. The nfl is a money printing machine. Does it have to do with the cap or that people just like football much more than baseball?
Of course if you’re a fan of baseball, the small market teams rarely compete although there are exceptions. There are a lot of putrid teams in the nfl but fans have more hope of their team coming out of it because of parity and it keeps everyone interested.
The fans of small market teams with up and coming players that are possible superstars know that those players won’t be around long and that must be frustrating as hell.
So not only do the big market teams have a competitive edge, they also have an advantage in getting their games played when they want them in the playoffs. Baseball needs to make as much money as they can so they oblige.
Baseball’s ending times in the world series are ridiculous also. Even though we were pissed, that rain delay made it possible to see an early ending when the phillies played the 3 inning deciding game.
Maybe some of that makes sense..lol

  4. P.J. Says:

Maybe you should look at where and when the other games are being played. They had to play 3 games on Wednesday and Thursday and two of the games are out on the west coast. I know it sucks that the games here are at 230, but do you think it is fair for LA fans to have to go to a game at 10AM? On Wednesday would it have been fair to make the winner of the Twins/Tigers game play at 230, less than 18 hours after playing the night before halfway across the country? Also the Rockies are on the west coast and on Sunday the series that were in the PST will be in either CST or EST. There are 4 games scheduled for Sunday and the Boston fans have to be there at 12 and the Rockies are the only team that can play that late and still have a decent time for the local fans. Everything is not a slap in the Phils face and while most of it is for tv and money reasons it is not MLB trying to screw Philly but rather they are playing the only logical times.

  5. ray Says:

PJ why couldn’t the phillies and yankees switched days for game 2? We could start at 6 today with the yankees starting at 2:30 yesterday and we get the off day today instead. Wouldn’t that have made it better for both the phillies and rockies fans?
Sounds like a money decision to me. Give me a break

  6. Pat Gallen Says:

Thanks PJ I actually did look at where they played.

And I Disagree, they could have started either LA Game at 3:30 EST, 12:30 LA time for one of the games. I’m only saying that one of the games could or should have been switched.

A 3:30, 6:30, 10pm schedule isnt that hard is it? You can call me an idiot if you think Im way off base here, but why should we get the short end…

  7. ray Says:

The yankees could also play sunday at 10 pm and the phillies could play monday at 5 pm if you want to talk about logical.
    No we’re talking about money.

  8. P.J. Says:

MLB sets its post season before the season even begins. (You could have looked these days the games would be played back in April, obviously not knowing which teams would be slotted, but that the two NL series start Wed and only one AL series starts Wed) There are two schedules for each league and MLB gives the team witht he best record in each league the option to choose the schedule they want to play. Since the Yankees had the best record in the AL they chose the schedule they wanted which happened to be Wed, off day Thur and then they play again Friday. So that rules out the possibility for the Yankees switching days like you said. That being said the Yankees, Phillies and Dodgers all played home games on Wed. It would be utterly unfair to the Twins to have them playing the 230 game just from a competitive standpoint. Also you can’t have the Dodgers game starting at 1030 AM local time. SO the Phils by default have to play at 230 on Wed. On Thursday the Yankees are off, so there are two west coast teams playing at home. Neither of them could play at 230 eastern b/c once again that would be 1030 AM local time in LA. So by default the Phils had to play when they did. It stinks but I don’t see how you can possibly argue that the Phils should have played another time. If there wasn’t a play in game the night before I agree that MLB could have given the Phils the 6PM game on Wed, but that didn’t happen.

  9. ray Says:

we get the off day yesterday i meant to say on that above my other post post..lol

  10. ray Says:

wow pj you are well versed on this postseason schedule thing. lol I stand corrected.

  11. dann1122 Says:

You will always be second fiddle to the NY teams no matter how much you win. That is the issue here. Philadelphia has an infactuation with NY and they can never win that battle so stop trying.

Just be thankful you are still playing. Yes it’s a money issue. Wouldn’t you take more money??

Philadelphia has to learn to handle that you will be second rate to NY and that it won’t bother you guys so much. NY is the best market and will be forever.

No one nationally care about the Rockies and Phillies anyway.

  12. Pat Gallen Says:

Believe me I could care less about being second or third or fourth fiddle. And even though the schedule was made in April, or whichever month it came out, there is always room for adjustment. Just ask Bud Selig about Game 5.

Does anyone nationally care much more about LA/STL? Stretch out the first round then like the NBA does to cater to TV even more. You dont see them playing in the afternoon.

  13. Gavin Says:

Like all of you, I follow this team not only every day for the 162 games, but 365 and I have done that for about 25 years now.

With this being the 3rd year in a row making the playoffs, this is the 3rd year in a row that I have gotten screwed. I am a teacher and a football coach, and I cant just take off from work to see the afternoon games…..I have to go coach. There is no call in sick…..or leave early to catch the game. I’m stuck on the field doing what I get paid to do.

I have gotten to see a total of 2 innings the last two days and I’m sick about it. All I wish for is to see them in the playoffs and I even when they get there I miss the game. MLB is a joke.

  14. Chuck Says:

    Yeah…this is horsecrap….BIGTIME!!!

  15. P.J. Says:

The postseason has already been stretched out. They did that starting last year. The World Series is going to run into November this year. There might already be snow in Denver this weekend. The only other time in history a WS game has been played in November was in 2001 after the 9/11 attacks shut baseball down for a weeka nd everything had to be pushed back. When MLB announced that the post season was going to be expanded with more off days over two years ago there was a huge uproar in that. Also expanded the post season with more off days cheapens the regular season even more. Baseball is a game where teams play at least 6 out of every 7 days and you use your team depth to get into the post season. Now you want teams to play every other day and give starters all this extra rest? That makes absolutely no sense. Both LCS series this year are going to be played over 10 days if it goes to seven games. Other than during the All-Star break can you find another time in the season when 7 games are played over a 10 day period. There are also already 2 off days in the LDS series. It would be ridiculous for teams to have off every other day, that is not baseball. Also if there weren’t two home teams on the west coast then this wouldn’t be as big an issue as it is this year. It happens, expanding the rounds to more off days is not the solution. The Phils had some tough luck this year with the schedule and it really wasn’t MLB sticking it to them or their fans.

  16. OZ Says:

MLB, and its ingenious King Selig, completely lack justice and reason.

When the people lead, the leaders will follow.

  17. P.J. Says:

Also there are a lot more people nationally who care about the LA/STL series than the Phl/Col series. LA is the 2nd biggest market in the US and the Cardinals are one of the most popular teams in all of baseball. The entire midwest region is mostly Cards fans and the numers for that series, the Sox series and the Yanks series will dwarf the Phils series if they were head to head. No one outside of Philly or Denver care about these two teams, but 4 of the other 6 teams in the playoffs have national followings. Where the games are played is the reason for the way the schedule is this year, but if it weren’t the Phils would still get the short end of the stick even as defending champs.

Boston is not in the top three of TV Markets.

    1) NY
    2) LA
    3)……..PHILLY

  20. P.J. Says:

I never said that Boston was in the top 3 tv markets but the Red Sox have a lot more fans throughout the country than the Phils do, and draw much higher ratings. BTW Philly is the #4 Market.

  21. The Original Chuck P Says:

I would have liked to see MLB step up and be creative… one point that was made to me is that the players have no room to complain since their salaries are largely determined by total revenue (revenue sharing)… fair enough… but as a city and as a fan base, I think that we have every right to be upset. I’m one of those people that had to sell my tickets because I couldn’t go. One stupid start time is understandable but two games is absurd. There are only two games on Saturday (no day games)… why the F don’t you have three games on Saturday?!? Further, someone would have to convince me that starting games at 2:37 is better than having two regional broadcasts at primetime… I just don’t see it. Baseball is one of those sports that many people don’t tune in for unless their team is on… baseball or The Office?? That’s a tough call for me but not for my wife… and she’s the boss.

MLB has a major problem on their hands… people in Denver aren’t happy about this either. No one wants to see their team have to play in 20 degree weather.

Bud Selig, you are a total douche.

  22. P.J. Says:

The Phillies and Rockies owners are not going to do anything to change it either. THey may publicly say how horrible it is but do you really think they are going to complain when there is record attendance? The time of the game is not affecting their receipts at the gate, so they have no motivation to enact a change. Also the Networks pay to broadcast the games, which all of the owners get a part of. There is no incentive by anyone in and around baseball to change anything. Until ballparks are half empty for playoff games b/cof bad start times owners won’t care. They have already collected their tv money and then the tv controlls who goes where b/c they have to pay their shareholders by having the most attractive matchups for advertisers to pay the most premiums. The only way this system fails is if the teams can’t sell tickets b/c that is new revenue for owners. This year though as I stated above has not even been controlled by tv, but rather by time zones.

  23. John M Says:

I don’t understand why they can’t play multiple games at the same time. One game on TBS and one game on TNT. Of the four other games played I’ve watched maybe 6 total innings. Besides a baseball freak. Who is sitting through 3 baseball games a day?

  24. Pat Gallen Says:

    According to Digital Sports Daily:

The Red Sox/Angels Game #1 delivered a 13.2 rating in the Boston market and a 8.0 rating in the Los Angeles market.

The Cardinals/Dodgers Game #2 delivered a 18.3 rating in the St. Louis market and a 6.5 rating in the Los Angeles market.

The Rockies/Phillies Game #2 delivered a 15.2 rating in the Philadelphia market and a 9.2 rating in the Denver market.

Phillies had the second best day out of any city in the playoffs yesterday.

  25. Philly Mac Says:

Fox did split telecast years ago. One game was on Fox and the other was on FX. That way Fox could maximize primetime advertising. To bad Bud “wet blanket” Selig wasn’t a fan of the split telecast.

  26. JP Says:

    PJ’s a douche

  27. jt Says:

all mlb cares about is yankees red sox the rest of the teams are like horse sh*t to them…it’s a joke sundays game doesn’t start until 10:00 I mean not everyone can stay up and watch that people gotta be up to go to work and school…btw seen pedro will start game 3 manuel just blew the series.

  28. Bobby in Boston Says:

It’s going to be great fun watching Pedro pitch this game, and he can definitely win the big game. Having watched him for many years in Boston, I believe he has proven to be much better at pitching in very hot weather than cold. And those sore muscles in his neck would be more comfortable in the heat, for sure. But our lineup and one of the greatest pitchers of all time? I like our chances.

I would have rather seen Blanton start this game, but I guess Charlie would rather use him as a reliever. We’ll see what Charlie does tonight with the pen. I’ll trust him. He is, after all manager of the defending champs. Keepin’ the Phaith . . .

  29. Madeline of Manyunk Says:

Some really good points above. Baseball cannot escape economic poletics. I have lived several places and unfortunately, in many places, being a Phillies fan did not account for much. You could always find Red Sox fans, Cub fans, Met fans and Yankee fans, but Phillies fans were like hens’ teeth. I LOVE THE PHILS AND AM GLAD THEY ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS. Fact is that not many people in Kansas City, Chicago, New York, Dallas, Miami, Atlanta, Detroit, Indianapolis, Cleveland, and other key places give a damn about my beloved Phils. And they are the ones who lose !!!!

  30. iSportacus » Blog Archive » MLB Disses Phillies Fans Says:

[...] The NFL, on the other hand, would have no problem with a small market team in their Super Bowl. The NFL is a far inferior league to MLB but they are extremely successful at selling storylines, so that a Super Bowl between Green Bay and Baltimore will get America just as fired up as a Super Bowl between New York and Chicago. Meanwhile, the MLB strategy is to just beat America over the head with Yankees and Red Sox and pray to God that one of the two of them make the Series. It is a pathetic, misguided, and embarrassingly amateur marketing strategy. RELATED: Phillies Nation comments on the stupidity of dissing a packed CBP for a half empty Yankee Stadium. [...]

  31. Madeline of Manyunk Says:

Furthermore, Bud Selig is not a human but a very high tech robot who is controlled by the money people of baseball. If there is the lack of a dollar, then don’t bother to holler. Bud likes the buck.

  32. George Says:

P.J: your start times are wrong. 2:37 in Philly is 11:37 in Los Angeles, not 10:37.

I can see the L.A-St. Louis matchup getting one primetime start, but there is absolutely no reason why they should be favored with two. And even an idiot knows you can’t expect balmy whether in Denver at 9:37 P.M. in the middle of October.

This schedule is a complete and total farce. Maybe it was set up in the spring, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t have been changed somewhat in September. The Phils have been screwed, their fans have been screwed, Colorado’s fans have been screwed, probably just for the money, but possibly for a more sinister reason. Giving the defending World Series Champions such horrible start times means they might be less likely to win again, thus supporting Crud Selig’s ideal of parity. Fewer afternoon fans means less of a homefield advantage.

No matter when or where this repulsive schedule was dreamed up, there is absolutely no reason in H— that one team should get ALL the better start times. May MLB’s planners all go to Denver and FREEZE TO DEATH.

  33. George Says:

Yes, P.J. owners will complain. If the Yankees games are on in primetime, and people are bored with the Yankees, are they going to watch? Fans of the Phils, or the Rockies, or the Dodgers might not. The Phils, being the defending champs, probably would have a greater audience than some of the other playoff teams, if the schedulers hadn’t put them on at such impossible times. How many fans can watch from work? How many children, old ladies, and old men can stay up maybe past midnight?

No, this schedule plain sucks, and no amount of blah, blah, blah P.J. excuses and P.J. questionable logic, and P.J. erroneous time zone arguments can ever change that.

If it’s any consolation, I think with all the complaining by players (i.E.-Cole Hamels), fans, and ownership, next year’s schedule will probably be a lot better. Maybe when the Phils are once again in it–and they will be–they’ll get a better shake.

  34. Harry Kalas Says:

Thanks for the history lesson PJ…. I mean that in a good way… Very informative. But if anyone thinks that Bud Sleazy/TBS/Fox/TV AD People would not have changed the times around if Tampa Bay and Baltimore made the playoffs instead of Boston and New York your very naive. So it’s Pedro and his mini-fro for Game 3…. This bleep has worn me out mentally already… I’m just going to hope our O comes through and I wish Pedro Martinez well. Or I’ll just pray for a foot of snow… Either way…Same difference…

  35. joedad Says:

Would I play for the New York Yankees or Mets?

“I’d retire first. It’s the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the 7 Train to the ballpark looking like you’re riding through Beirut next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It’s depressing… The biggest thing I don’t like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country? ”

  36. ray Says:

That would be that braves closer but I can’t forget his name joedad. I think dann the idiot has it the wrong way. We really don’t care about NY. Think about it, as an eagles fan they are 90 minutes up the road but the dallas cowboys are the team we hate most. The mets are the ones foaming at the mouths about us, because we are the champs and we forgot about them halfway through the season.
They have 2 teams up there from every sport also, they are bound to win sometimes. The mets and yankees have tons of money, but they each haven’t been in a world series since 2000. The law of averages say that if you have that much of an unfair advantage over most teams because of money and you have 2 teams in the same city you should be world beaters.
Didn’t tug tell you guys to shove it?

  37. I see dollars Says:

It is unfair and ridiculous to fans but thats what you get when NY is 8 times larger than Philly. Even if half of NY hated the Yankees and didn’t watch, it would still be a bigger market, and always will be because of its population, thus producing bigger tv ratings and more “viewings”

I hate it as much as the next person and it won’t change until Buddy Bud Senial Selig leaves.

As far as the season goes, Philly gets screwed playing Colorado in whats going to be the coldest game in history….29 degrees! Cmon’ was the game meant to be played then?! At least say, hey hmmm lets change the schedule and not freeze the players, get them potentially injuried from hitting balls with a frozen bat and for the fans, after all the game is about the fans…at least i think hahah

Wait till the Twins get their new outdoor stadium..what a joke! They arent going to be able to play the first 6 weeks and they certainly won’t be able to play in October and November, let alone late September up there! hahahaha then NY and AL can be suckered for winter ball…..oh wait, i’m sure they will rearrange the schedule so they don’t have to play at 10 pm CST cause it will be too cold for them.

    NL always gets screwed.

  38. ray Says:

Well the yankees have been in the world series but they got got beat by two teams that have the same payroll as two of their players so
    wutevaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Mets and Phils rivalry is over. It takes 2 to tango and the Mets are toast and Phils are the toast of the MLB

  40. Bud Sleazy Says:

And they got me on their side too.. That’s better than Nationwide baby!

  41. I see dollars Says:

TBS absolutely blows. I don’t know who the hell those announcers are but they are the F’in worst! Are they watching the same team i am?! Do they look over stats before the game?!

Some of the comments aren’t even factual….such as the one announcer said Cole might have an elbow problem and thats the reason why he didnt start game 1 when in fact anybody and any idiot “informative” announcer knows that it was so he could get his normal days rest…we all know in Philly how important that is.

Then the announcer made misguided, baltenly false, innaccurate statemets with statistics saying how jimmy rollins hits barely as a switch hitter and questioning why he was hitting left …duh what an idiot!

They didn’t even show any excitement, Hell i thought i was gonna fall asleep. I couldn’t even hear the crowd, they barely showed any excited fans, i barely saw a statistic on the screen and did they even talk baseball?!

Jesus, how the hell does TBS get the games?! I’d rather have Fox do it or even Comcast.

    TBS….Total Bull Sh^^

  42. ray Says:

I’m hearing a lot of talk about how the game could get cancelled and played on sunday. They were playing on sunday anyways but the weather may force these jackasses to make the colorado games day games and wouldn’t that be great if they were forced to play the day game sunday

  43. Harry Kalas Says:

$200 million dollar A-Rod gets an rbi against the Brett Favres and Yankee Stadium erupts…. lowered expections…. Yeah Spankey Yankee, That Billion Dollar O is so powerful….. 44. tom mccarthy Says:

Hey guys if you don’t like TBS’s coverage I’m availabe to come to your house and announce the games in person for a exorbitant fee

  45. chris wheeler Says:

Tom that is a real goofy idea. I mean really goofy, just when you think you’ve seen it all. ha ha ha. PS I’m available too and I’ll bring a signed copy of my book for an extra ten bucks

  46. SpankyYankee Says:

Gee Harry why so negative..the people who own the phills have more money then the Yanks do….they just don’t spent it….you must just be jealous that your team doesn’t AND NEVER will have 38 championships and 26 World Series….or is it a case of DEAD MAN TALKING….lol

  47. Phillygirl Says:

I hate these start times. I broke all rules at the school I teach at in Alexandria, VA by putting the game on during the last period of the day. Oh well.

Can anyone tell me a bar that Phillies’ fans will be at in the DC Metro on Saturday Night?

  48. Keith Says:

Spanky Yankee can’t be happy right now.

  49. Keith Says:

    nevermind lol

  50. Terri Says:

    I hate the yankess.

  51. spankyYankee Says:

Yes your team will NEVER have 38 championships and 26 world series….I have EVERYTHING to do with that. Yes I’m only a fan, but I help the yankees win so I can come in here and tell you how great my team is. I’ve seen all those world series and championships too because i’m almost 100 years old. So you have to root for the phillies who haven’t won as many championships as my yankees and it’s your fault they don’t have championships. I live my life through the yankees because girls are grossed out by me and I have nothing else to do with my life but talk crap in here because I would never do this to anyone’s face. My life may be shallow but I have 26 world series trophies in MY room

  52. Harry Kalas Says:

I’m respect the Yankees. It’s you that I don’t respect…. You come on here only when the Phillies lose or the Yankees are winning. Your team is locked in a 3-3 tie with the Twins??? Even if you win;so what!! The Twins couldn’t score 5 runs in 20inns. AJ was semi-garbage tonite;he got real lucky.. And you’re on here talking about the bleeping 20th Century Yankees.. No other team in MLB makes more revenue than the Yankees. And you still haven’t won a WS since 2000? And you ran Torre out of town… STUFU and come back when…. the Yankees win another WS….

  53. Keith Says:

    haha good parody

  54. Andrew Says:

The yankees suck a you can already see they are not going to make it to the series. Nathan Lane closing for the twins always does this in the playoffs. But wasnt the much talked about and delighted in subway series in 2000 the lowest rated series ever? Give me a break.

10 07 PM on a school night for the defending Champs is a disgrace. Also they are calling for snow saturday. Should be allowed absence for kids that day. MLB sucks.

  55. chris wheeler Says:

That was a real goofy parody. I’ll tell you you’ve think you’ve seen…..oh never mind I hate myself, this squirrel on my head, my pompous ass attitude, my troll like body. Even my books sucks so please everybody, do you yourself a favor and don’t read it

  56. George Says:

MLB now talking about game postponements in Colorado indicates even more that there IS flexibility in the schedule. It’s just that their original decision paid no mind to fairness or logic or even revenue. Fooling around with postponements will further confuse T.V. viewers. More will not be able to, or will not chose to watch. Fewer viewers=less advertising revenue=less T.V. revenue=worse broadcast contracts for MLB=less income for all the baseball owners.

Bud Smellig and his idiot cronies should–but probably won’t–learn a lesson here. They shouldn’t be bending over all the time for Fox/TBS. Those fools have no clue at all about baseball. In fact, those people know so little about what the public really wants, they have to cancel half the September shows in October.

I don’t particularly care if Crud Selig likes to take it where the sun doesn’t shine. But if MLB doesn’t watch itself, baseball will be about as popular as Hitler, because no fan is always going to put up with a video feed going in the wrong orifice at the wrong time. No fan wants a Bud Selig enema.

  57. Andrew Says:

Chris wheeler has books? If you bought one you should be pistol whipped.

  58. Jeff Says:

I hate to say it but I picked the Rockies in 4. Charlie has screwed this series up. All the sneaky with who is starting certain games. Down 4-0 in game two and putting two starters on the mound. Then announcing Pedro who has not been with us long to start a big game in 20 degree weather. Thats just great. Blanton has been our best pitcher. Happ the same. We are not starting either. Are you crazy. Should of been Lee, Hamels, Blanton, Happ. No pedro. Charlie is an idiot. Tired of him. He screwed this one. Now I see a ABOMB BY AROID. GREAT .

  59. Keith Says:

Chris Wheeler really isn’t that bad lol. He’s just goofy. ;)

  60. Harry Kalas Says:

I picked the Phillies in a surprising sweep or 4 games tops… And I’m standing by that until something else happens…. Have faith my friend, it costs nothing….

  61. Andrew Says:

Its actually going to be 25 degrees and snow at first pitch tomorrow.
Do the phillies play well win the snow?

    http://www.weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/USCO0105?begHour=8&begDay=283

  62. Keith Says:

can we just play now and win so everyone can stop whining?

  63. Harry Kalas Says:

None of else had any idea Chuck would go with Pedro in Game 3. The spilts on the Rockies show they’re way btter at home, unlike the Phils who are actually better O on the road. Coors is a doubles paradise… With J-Roll, Vic, RAUUL, Chase, Howard and Werth I have confidence that we can play shoot-out style baseball if needed….

  64. Keith Says:

oh wow Yankees f-ed that up

  65. Harry Kalas Says:

That’s us…..Nice DP by the Yankees O in the clutch…..

  66. Harry Kalas Says:

I like your line much better Keith… Nice!

  67. Keith Says:

thanks Harry, now let’s win you a World Series!

  68. Harry Kalas Says:

Oh, wow! That ball was wicked fair…

  69. Phillie Phanatic Says:

    Phuck yeah!

  70. Chris Wheeler Says:

    This game is just goofy.

  71. Keith Says:

Pedro is excited about starting tomorrow. Can he be so kind and pitch a perfect game and hit 4 homeruns? ;)

    http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091009&content_id=7410508&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi

  72. goofy Says:

Hey Wheels you better stop using my name or i’m going to sue you for copyright infringement

  73. Sarge Says:

    It’s cadillac time!!!

  74. Harry Kalas Says:

Let’s hope so Keith…. The Phillies have the heart of a Lion…. No matter what we all know that they’re going to fight to the very end. The Game 2 loss hurt, but they almost pulled it off. The key of course is to just get a few runs early and give Pedro a little more confidence.

  75. Chris Wheeler Says:

    I’m not scarrrrrrrrrrrred.

  76. Keith Says:

Now the Twins are f-ing their chances of taking the lead.

  77. Harry Kalas Says:

Can you believe it! Yup, the Twins are afraid of their own shadow….

  78. Terri Says:

wow, the twins blew that one. feels like i am watching a phillies game with the first pitch swinging.

  79. Harry Kalas Says:

    …that’s why I wrote the Twins couldn’t score 5 runs in 20 inns….

  80. Sarge Says:

That was more like oldsmobile time

  81. Terri Says:

the yankees make it seem so easy.

  82. Keith Says:

is it me or the Yankees fans aren’t going crazy?

  83. Harry Kalas Says:

The Twins can cry about the umps…. But bases loaded and no outs?? And not a single run… Who do they think they are? The Phillies?

  84. mark teixeira Says:

Yes this is the best play in the world to play! Well only if you win 100 plus games and the world series it is, the fans have turned on this team before that’s why they bought me and a few select players also known as the chosen ones.

  85. Harry Kalas Says:

A Phillies vs Yanks WS would be so much damn fun to watch… We would all have to wear depenables. Both fan bases…

  86. Harry Kalas Says:

The chosen one?? Against the Twins…. Don’t drink and blog….. It’s very rude(lol)

  87. robert deniro Says:

If you’re pissed about the yankees don’t sweat it, Goodfellas is on Bravo, I know it’s the cut up version but it’s still one of the best movies of all time. So turn it on if you don’t you will disrespect me a lil bit. A lil bit.

  88. paulie Says:

Don’t put too many onions in the sauce

  89. jimmy two times Says:

I’m going to get the papers, get the papers

  90. hotstove Says:

If the Phillies game is post poned then monday the phillies will be the late game again.

  91. Morris Buttermaker Says:

You know, if the Rockies and Phillies series is really so lame for ratings, why even put it on national TV? Let TBS show reruns of Everybody Loves Raymond all afternoon. And let the Phillies and Rockies play games that start at normal times. I would prefer the Phillies played at 7:30 and the game is broadcast on MyPHL and Denver’s local affiliate. I, a season ticket holder, had to sell my playoff ticket because I had work so that some dude in Kansas could watch the game.

After the Yankees game, my girlfriend said we would be hearing about the blown call on Mauer for a month. I corrected her, I told her, “No, if the call had gone against the Yankees, we would be hearing about it for a month. But since it happened to the Twins, that is the end of it.”

  92. Andrew Says:

Not pissed about the Yankees. In my dream scenario the phils beat them in the world series. Hamels not starting again this series means we have a legit chance.

  93. Phillin' 'er up! Says:

    Hey Guys, come on!
This is the postseason and you guys have barely been putting up posts like you did last year. We need to see something, anything after we come to this site all. Keep the posts coming!

  94. j reed Says:

Andrew – so Lee, Happ, Blanton and Pedro….the Yankees left handed batters would eat Pedro alive…

  95. j reed Says:

Well looks like the Yankees should start to worry with the HALOS looking like the Red Sox post season monkey might be thrown off their backs.

  96. ray Says:

The probable scenario, and I’m saying probable, is that if the phillies lose tomorrow, lee will start sunday. If they win sunday, there’s no doubt they will come back with hamels on tuesday. Apparently manuel wants to keep happ in the back end of the bullpen. Of course if the phils win tomorrow, you won’t see hamels at all until the next series, cause lee will take his start to 5th game if needed. A lot of different scenarios there, but I think if lee is needed sunday, manuel will go with cole, whether we like it or not

  97. karen Says:

The really bad thing in all of this is that JA Happ had a 4 hit shut out in august against the rockies. Somehow I doubt that any other team would take their best starter all year and shove him in the damn bullpen.

  98. Jeff Says:

Mark my WORDS. Pedro will get eaten alive against the Rockies. I realize he pitched great against the AAA Mets. Threw 130 pitches that night. You cant put him out in this situation. Wasnt happ and blanton the reason were here. go away charlie.

  99. John Snowden Says:

I remember Franzke saying during game two at I think it was the third inning “Cole Hamels has finished his warm up tosses and is ready to go but we’re just waiting for the TV broadcast to finish with the commercials.” Not to be totally cynical, but if TBS can go through MLB and say “don’t play yet cause we have two more commercials we want to squeeze in despite your rules.” what’s to stop them from saying “call more strikes to speed it up so we can get the sox on sooner.” or “blow a call for controversy thus improving ratings.”

As far as I’m concerned, post-season broadcasting is turning the playoffs into a circus. I know MLB is trying to make as much money as possible to compete with the NFL during the middle of their season BUT, I really can’t wait to see what happens when the TBS/FOX contract is up I think in 2012, and MLB’s plans with it’s network.

  100. jt Says:

i don’t think pedro going to pitch a good game…his 4 quality starts with the phils came against the mets twice, the giants, and the nats…the giants offense sucks and the mets and nats aren’t any good…the rockies crush right handed pitching and were at their stadium in freezing weather…i agree with the person on here that said why not give happ the start he pitched at northwestern where it’s cold so he’s prolly pitched in weather like that before and does manuel seem to forget who pitched a complete game shutout against the rockies?i hope cliff lee can pitch on 3 days rest.

  101. Andrew Says:

Why would there be any scenario where lee pitches on short rest?
You lose game 3 games 4 and 5 are both elimination. Why use him in game 4? You want to be eliminated? I will never understand logic.

  102. jt Says:

who will start game 4 because manuel it seems like wants happ in the pen and blanton in a big game facing elimination?

  103. mikeB Says:

I am a Phillies fan in Omaha, NE where it is 28 degrees here at 5:30 AM on Saturday morning with a wind chill of 19 degrees figuring in the NW wind. Just checked the weather further out west in Denver at this time and it is 20 degrees with snow. They are crazy if they play that game tonight.

  104. Philsgirl Says:

From everything I’ve been able to find, Happ was already saying he was fine yesterday, and really good point about him prob having cold weather pitching experience. From here, order should be Happ, Blanton, Lee on short rest if needed. Sorry, Pedro, but speaking as an old fart myself, ya wanna support your team best you can, wear lots of warm phils gear in the dugout and give lots of high fives and hand bumps as we come back in from crossin’ the plate. Poor Jamie can’t even do that anymore and, um, wasn’t he half your show for most of the year anyhow…

  105. Jeff Y. Says:

Pedro loves the cold. Utley needs to wake up. When JRoll, Vic, Utley, and Werth get on base, send them against that catcher. He as no arm.

  106. chitown phillyfan Says:

What I find even more ironic about these crappy start times is this is by far the best series so far. Every other series is at 2-0.

  107. i cant stand joe morgan Says:

remember last year…after game 5.1 it was not raining, but was very cold. dumb selig said that the conditions weren’t favorable for a game the night. betcha bottom dollar that the temps will be colder tonite than it was then. will the game get played? bet on it. its just the way this idiot works…
how this guy had the know-how to run a business, let alone an mlb team, let alone mlb, is beyond me.

  108. i cant stand joe morgan Says:

guess i was wrong, just reading game 3 tonite is cancelled. maybe there is some sense in this world after all…
now what am i gonna do tonite?

  109. Jrolljoel Says:

This the best series????? cause it’s tied what are you watching for ….so I guess if you we were up 2 zip what would it be then????? a BORE…give me a break some of you are so F’n stupid with the remarks on here..ya blame this guy today another tommorrow someone else the next time…complain about the start times aka Hamels ….when do you want to play? its called BASEBALL ya play it year long to get here …and I’m thankful we’re here …yeah the timing aint great mother nature is not co-operating either but CRAP the team is tuff more so then ya give it credit for…I’m not a Pedro fan at all never liked him and still think Happ was the way to go..but Charlie see it other wise so we got take that…there’s nothing we can do about the times and MLB and the umpires…but we can hope for a “snow” out nobody wants to play in the junk out CO….not even the Rookies …I think if it gets cancelled Happ will pitch sunday and then Blanton..I hope but have no control either way…and yes to those who saw a terrible call against the Twins last night….some how the line ump didn;t see where the ball landed Helen Kelller could have saw that one but …hey it wasn’t against us ….THIS TIME!!! lets just go with LETS GO PHILS..I’m new here and I’m done hope I didn’t offend anyone. BEER AND CHEER ITS OURS TO WIN AGAIN THIS ………

  110. Madeline of Manyunk Says:

Hey SPANKY YANKEE —- we all know WHAT you spank and maybe you should let up on it a little. Too much is not good. That’s why your eyesight may be so bad.

  111. Terri Says:

Game 3 is postponed!! (I am serious)

  112. Georgie Says:

Morris, you are absolutely correct, if that blown call had been against the Yankees, we would have heard about it for YEARS. How the hell did he blow that call, the ball was at least a foot fair? The Twins should have been jumping up and down and screaming at that ump, think he was paid off for that call? There are only two sports franchises that I can say with complete honesty I can’t stand, the Yankees and the N.E. Patriots. I would love to see the Phillies spank those Yanks, but you just know everyone, announcers, umps, media, will all be biased, and I swear, if the Phils would lose to them by way of a bad call like last night, I think I’d go totally and completely nuts.

If the Phils do end up playing the Spankmees, I will probably get banned from here, I will be wound up like a top, baby, and no doubt borrowing many of my dad’s curse words he’s made up over decades of watching the Phils.

  113. chitown phillyfan Says:

Jroll Joel, yes its the best series because it is the closest and arguably the most compelling cause who knows whats gonna happen. If you happened to watch baseball before this year (clearly u haven’t), most 2-0 LDS leads hold up, so those other series are all but over. Does that mean they will this year for sure? No, of course not. But in terms of the most compelling series with 2 evenly matched teams, this one takes the cake.

  114. Jrolljoel Says:

Wow chitown you’re right I just bought my first tv this year and know nothing about baseball..I guess I offended you by saying how much more happier I’d be and most all the others on here if we were up 2-0….I’m going to the book store today to read more about baseball and hopefully I’ll be able to understand how its more exciting to be tied with 2 games away from home to a team that is something like 50 and 31 at home and we have been struggling all year with the bullpen worries and starting pitchers and some guys who may be really tired or even hurt…but they just keep on trying. I hope we win in 5 so its more “compelling” and then the next series goes 7 games that would be super “compelling” and then then, then, wow this writing is even “compelling” I’m stuttering … I think the Worlds Series should go 7 games too and we win the 7 th game whewwwwww thank you so much for your in site…gotta get to the book stor now and then off to the tatoo shop for the Phillies logo and right under it the word “COMPELLING”……the Red Soxes came back from 0-3 and went on to win the W/S but you didn’t hear from me chitown…cause I know nothing….

  115. Harry Kalas Says:

And Bud Sleazy has done it again….. This time in favor of the good guys… Thanks dude….

-Charlie if you f*ck this up I swear to God I’m done with your Cowboy managing antics…

-Of course I don’t mean this whole heartedly, but you catch my drift..

-It better be either Blanton/Happ for Game 3 and Mr. Cliff f*cking Lee in Game 4… Pedro nice press conf and I respect your “no fear” mentality, but now is not the time to send you and your near 6.0 career era at Coors on the mound for this extremely crucial Game 3. The winner of Game 3 probably takes the series…

-The BP is not as bad as thought (pending a Lidge blown save)… After thinking about it Charlie used Happ earlier because he was trying to save Eyre for a .1 inn 9th in a save spot, and either Lidge or Madson for the last 2 outs.. But he should not have used them both… That was retarded…..

-The games on 3 straight days may cost BP wise, but it will hurt Col too… That’s the only draw back, that and maybe seeing U. Jimnz. again sooner rather than later. We may see Cole pitch Game 1 after all, this time in the NLCS….

-The Phils got a break.. They better cash in….

-I’m done wasting time responding to worthless trolls….

  116. chitown phillyfan Says:

Of course as a fan I’d rather the Phillies be up 2-0. My point in my original post was that its ironic for the MLB to have given this series poor start times when it is turning out to be the most exciting series. And I hope its not exciting for the rest of the way as I hope the Phils get blowout wins in games 3 and 4. But I would not be surprised in the least if it went 5.
