Myers to be added to roster?
Posted by Amanda Orr, Sun, October 25, 2009 01:02 PM
The Phillies have not made an official decision, but adding Brett Myers to the World Series roster is “a possibility we have to consider,” according to Ruben Amaro Jr. Adding Myers will depend on if the Phillies want to carry 12 pitchers instead of 11.
Myers walked two batters in 2/3 of an inning during the NLDS. He was left off the NLCS roster because he did not fully recover from a strained muscle in his throwing shoulder. Myers continues to make progress. “His stuff is sharper. His breaking ball’s better. He was pretty crisp with his location. He’s throwing better. And that’s a great sign,” Amaro said.
If the Phillies end up playing the Yankees in the World Series, the Phillies’ decision may become easier. He pitched eight inning, three-run baseball against the Yankees in May. Additionally, he helped beat CC Sabathia in the NLDS. As Amaro said, “well, we know he can draw a walk.”

If he’s healthy and effective then great, he’ll make a solid long/middle relief guy….
October 25th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
I think everyone knew, but Cliff Lee officialy announced as Game 1 starter for World Series – Wednesday, October 28th 7:57pm ET
October 25th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Dont add the wife beater please. He is finished. Just keep him off the post season roster and let him go eleswhere. He is a scrub at this time. Remember that great inning he had against the great Mets comeback. Gave up runs. Then we imploded. Myers go home and learn how to treat a lady, scrub.
October 25th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
He beat his wife, yes. That’s over…in the past. Let’s all move on. It’s the same as Vick. What he did was horrible as well….maybe worse…. but he deserves forgiveness and support.
If Myers is healthy and can help us win another WFC, then I say….Add him!!
October 25th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Myers — THE RETURN OF THE WIFE BEATER AND BOOZER. The guy is an ass and I hope he is OFF our team next year.
October 25th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Tiajuana: It’s pretty sad when the self-righteous comes on message boards, any message board and tries to pretend that he or she is holier than thou and has never committed a sin. It’s the WS. Go whine about your worthless self on a Dr. Phil message board. As we Phillies fans don’t have the time or the desire to help figure out “who you really are.”
October 25th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
I agree that Myers probably should be left off the roster. Seems like a bit of a gamble too much of a gamble for me. Is Condrey healthy? I will say Charlie is the reason he is “re-injured” Charlie over used him big time when he 1st got back. Sad, but this is no time to try make-up for your mistake Phils.
October 25th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Outside of his issues we need more RHP in the next series. The Yanks are the best hitting team against LHP this year. So, expect Lee, Hamels, and Happ to struggle if form holds. Lee did dominate them though the one time he faced him. I say they put Myers on the roster and leave off Bastardo.
October 25th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
I hope they put Myers on the roster. Bastardo has not been used enough in the first two rounds to justify being on the WS roster. Just a bit of fantasy here, but I wish that Jayson Werth practiced enough as a catcher to be the emergency catcher. Paul Bako is such a waste of a roster spot. I know that they ‘have’ to keep a backup catcher on the roster in case Chooch gets hurt, it just seems so remote a possibility… and if Werth had even practiced the tiniest bit as a catcher…. I know it would never be considered… It would be quite a storyline if Charlie gambled a bit…
October 25th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
If Myers is healthy then I’m all for it. I know Condrey is a reliever, but does anyone know if this guy is healthy? If Myers is not fully healthy, then I would perfer a healthy Kyle Kendrick and his sinker over a shaky Myers.
October 25th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Come on Joe, a backup catcher is always needed because catcher is the most specialized position on the field. You can’t hope that someone who played catcher 7+ years ago in the minors and is your everyday right fielder can just jump in there and catch a Brad Lidge slider or Ryan Madson fastball. My uneducated guess is that Myers would replace Cairo or Bastardo.
October 25th, 2009 at 7:48 pm
Yeah I don’t want to see Werth backing up Ruiz. This Game is huuuuge!
Let’s go Angels! I’m not afraid of CC certainly, but I’m not arrogant either. A game 7 pushes CC back to Game 3 in Philly as many other posters have already pointed put. I’ll take that in a heart beat.
October 25th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
oh boy, J. Saunders looks shook..
October 25th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Both Myers and Condrey are question marks health wise but Myers has pitched the yankees well esp with his curveball which is much more devasting than the curveballs of any of the Halo pitchers even Lackey who threw plenty of them in game 4. This assumes of course that he has his curveball back. Myers would replace Bastardo is my guess. I think Bastardo would get get destroyed by either the Halos or Yanks.
Man Morales what a wuss….he could have caught that foul ball
October 25th, 2009 at 9:46 pm
The Angels are also making Petite look way better than he’s pitching.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
I know, come on Angels.
October 25th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
the angels are pressing
October 25th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
If Myers is added, who is out?
October 25th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
i think bastardo
October 25th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
geez…I didn’t even know he was there. I thought it said they were upping pitchers from 11 to twelve. Wouldn’t that mean a bench player would go?
October 25th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Well if they drop Bastardo and Myers takes his place then that would still make 11 pitchers I suppose
October 25th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
I think they might drop Cairo becasue they wont need the bench player as much because of that silly DH rule.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:25 pm
Amazing that the worst greatest most stupendous automatic closer in the history of mankind who we are not worthy of breathing the same air nor drinking the same water nor living on the same Earth let alone the same universe because we are not worthy we are scum is only 6 of 10 save opportunities in series clinching games.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
well the Angels are pretty much done
October 25th, 2009 at 11:44 pm
Yeah I forgot about the DH thingy…..wow the Angels colossal crrapping of the bed…which bodes well for us…the Yankees aren’t playing great baseball, other teams are just playing so poorly.
October 25th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
Weaver at least do us a favor and plunk A-Rod…break his hand for us
October 26th, 2009 at 12:00 am
The 8th was the definition of crapping th bed. Bring on the Spankees, Kate Hudson and all the millions of bandwagon jumpers. Our Phils are gonna paddle a little behind. Ain’t gonna paddle it – gonna kick it, real hard.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:01 am
well Sarge jr. is the Halos only hope
October 26th, 2009 at 12:04 am
Well, we won’t buckle, break, bow down to nothing….the Angels should be ashamed of how they played with their tails between their legs
October 26th, 2009 at 12:04 am
Bring em on. Time to stomp on the heart of New York yet another time.
October 26th, 2009 at 12:09 am
Yeah, this team transformed itself during this post season and has become the team I knew it coluld become….Yankee Stompers
October 26th, 2009 at 12:15 am
And please odds makers, analysts, columnists pick the Yankees to win… we play harder as the UNDERDOGS
October 26th, 2009 at 12:47 am
nobody will pick us to win so underdogs for sure.
October 26th, 2009 at 10:02 am
What Myers did as a starter, and what the Yankees were as a team back then…. neither is the same right now
that Yankees team I believe had JUST gotten A-Rod back.. and Posada was on the DL for them
…
I’m more concerned with how Happ will be used in this series than if Myers make the roster or not
October 26th, 2009 at 11:32 am
I believe that Charlie will make the right decision regarding Myers. Every move he has made (roster-wise) during the playoffs has been right on target.
